So I have over a thousand followers now (holy shit) and a decent number of people who follow me have at least a passing interest in the stuff I post about swords and HEMA, so I figured I'd do you all a favor and quickly point out which HEMA YouTubers are good vs which ones are worth staying away from:
Good:
Matt Easton
Martin Fabian
Robinswords
Schildwache Potsdam
Björn Rüther
Dave Rawlings (London Longsword Academy)
Akademia Szermierzy
Stoccata
HEMA Fight Breakdowns (He did a video on one of my clubmates!)
Bad:
Shadiversity (Friends with chuds like Sargon of Akkad and not a credible source of information in the slightest)
Blood and Iron Martial Arts (Toxic club culture at best, Nazis at worst)
Jill Bearup (TERF)
ARMA, including ARMA Korea (High control group/grift with bad safety culture)

I’ve become involved in the conversation revolving around this .GIF today (as you may have noticed,) and I saw some people talking about how it’s clear that this is a staged thing. For those interested in watching the entire video, I’ll link it here, but if you want to see the plays from Il Fior di Battaglia in a more combative scenario, the above video is a good place.
Tumblr media
I did want to add that both of these video are by Akademia Szermierzy, who, if I’m not mistaken, are a HEMA group in Poland. Their videos on the contents from Fiore really are the most well produced, well executed videos I’ve been able to find (though they don’t really explain the maneuvers or mechanics at all.)
Many of the clips are obviously training or going over the move, not real sparring, but many of them can also be picked out as these maneuvers being successfully pulled off in actual sparring scenarios, so take a look and enjoy.
The original post should be available here, as well as the addition with the slowed down .GIF here.

Akademia Szermierzy, a Polish HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) academy in Warsaw, produced this short film presenting a dramatization of one of Fiore dei Liberi’s five duels against rival fencing masters.
More information on this film can be found in this interview with the International Armizare Society.

recommendations for which kind of medieval weapon I should buy to help me get over my toxic ex?
While the context confuses me, if you wanted a strange yet detailed description of medieval weapons for an esoteric purpose, you've come to the right place. (Disclaimer: I am not a professional. While I am a martial artist, I wouldn’t describe myself as anything more than an amateur and a nerd who likes medieval weapons and the dynamics of combat).
Firstly, the bow: These come as long-, shor-, or cross- style. All three have very different uses. The longbow has tremendous range, perfect for keeping away unwanted attention, but requires a tremendous draw strength and can be unwieldy to maneouvre with. The shortbow is weaker, but more maneouverable, easier to draw and faster firing, and you still have the advantage of range. The crossbow is the best and worst of both worlds, it is small and maneouverable, but slow to load and draw, though it packs a punch. With a bow, my recommendation is a shortbow and a diligence to aim. The concentration required to master such a weapon forces the mind to still and calm while granting you the martial power to dispatch any threat before it gets close enough to hurt you. Second, the sword: The sword is quite the art and comes in a very wide variety of forms from around the world. From lightweight and nimble katana to large and imposing zweihander, the sword has known much use throughout history and many forms of combat have been developed. I personally use a bastard sword, also known as a hand-and-a-half. This weapon can be weilded with one or both hands and carries a moderate amount of stopping power. The art of weilding it relies on learning to consider your sword as a versatile weapon and an extension of your body, but most of all: remember that in any sword duel, the rest of the body is no less a weapon. A versatile swordsman knows when to forgo the blade and simply kick their opponent. It might seem "dishonourable" in a duel, but in true combat, to use one's entire body means the difference between victory and defeat. The longsword functions in much the same way, though it accounts for a heavier use of the two-handed grip. Larger swords in the greatsword/zweihander category are build not ony for power, but for range. With a greatsword your might and stopping power is matched only by the range at which you can strike. Another strength of the greatsword is the ability to swing it in a continuous arc, much like a spear, to block incoming attacks. The shortsword is a nimble thing, used for close quarters combat with one hand. I highly recommend pairing this with a shield, another shortsword, or a dagger. Otherwise your defensive capabilities will drop sharply.
Third, the polearm: Whether it is spear or halberd, the polearm grants the wielder a range advantage. In the case of the spear, the combination with a shield creates a truly devastating combination in skilled hands, capable of outmaneouvering most other weapons. The spear is a weapon best used to keep the opponent at a distance, waiting for the correct opening to strike decisively. The halberd is a slashing weapon, though most have the option to stab as well, and are just as useful to attempt to disarm a swordsman (in both interpretations of that word).
Fourthly, the bludgeon: Mace, morningstar, hammer, club and suchlike, these weaponsI confess, I know little about. I am an archer and a swordsman, my expertise does not extend to such instruments. Though, from my general knowledge, they are very close quarters and require strength to weild. There is strategy in the art of maneouvering, however, I would recommend consulting annother source who has more experience with these weapons.
In conclusion, my personal recommendation in either the bow, for it's focus and almost meditative qualities, or the sword, for its stopping power as well as its focus. Both are effective weapons, and I admit the sword does look more badass. In you want to learn, there are many channels on YouTube dedicated to swordsmanship (I follow Akademia Szermierzy) and archery (I follow Armin Himer). Personally I recommend the historical "Intuitive Archery" rather than modern competitive archery, which is slower and, in my experience, entirely unsuited for active combat. You might also want to check out your local HEMA and archery clubs if you continue to be interested in historical weaponry. Additionally, as a necessary disclaimer, as a martial artist I cannot recommend enough the sense of purpose and fulfilment that one gets when training and fighting. However, one must always take care that during any spar, any duel, any practice, that your intent is clear. Getting out excess aggression is good, and doing so through focused exercise is also good, but fueling your power on vengeance, spite and anger will only lead to a quick, uncontrolled burn. You must fuel yourself on determination and drive, then your self-improvement and skill will be yours and yours alone to keep, even when the object of your rage fades into obsolescence.
