Happy birthday! If you could have any one authentic antique (weapon, armor, art, vehicle, anything, any era) for your birthday present, what would it be?
First thought would be the A.489 Swiss sabre from the Wallace Collection.
And then sense steps in, because - like all my other swords - this one is a bit limited. I'd get to own it, and polish it, and dust it, but since I don't do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) that's about the lot.
I might be able to take it to various places such as conventions, and bask in second-hand admiration - or I might end up having it seized by the police for (insert reason here).
So a much more practical birthday present would be a vintage Conway Stewart fountain pen, the one my Dad used to use. He wrote with that pen every workday for knocking on 40 years, and its (gold, flexible) nib became so attuned to his own handwriting quirks that he wouldn't let anyone else use it.
If you sometimes wonder why fountain-pen users are rather possessive about their oldest or most favourite pens, this is why.
@dduane is getting a bit that way about her Mont Blanc 146, which I bought her on a day when (1) she saw it, (2) she liked it and (3) I could afford it without hesitation all happened on the same afternoon.
I'm definitely that way about my Parker 51. I was given it on my first day of Big School in 1968, and since then it's written or signed essays, dissertations, examinations, the Official Secrets Act (twice - don't ask, it's a Secret), novel drafts, love letters and a marriage certificate.
I don't loan it to anyone.
The pen IS mightier than the sword. For one thing, it can go places a sword can't and for another, while a sword can kill a body only once, a pen can kill a reputation every time the disparaging comment it writes goes into print.
See Richard III of England for how well that works.

Suibian vs. Baxia
Suibian propaganda:
Suibian means Whatever, which is literally iconic. Vote for Suibian to make up for all the time it spent left behind in Wei Wuxian's edgy era, give it some compensation for dealing with all that (submitted anonymously)
Baxia propaganda:
I want to have some big, well thought out propaganda piece for Baxia but first of all, the existing propaganda is already excellent. second of all, the only thing in my head is BIG SWORD SEXY which honestly? what more do you need? Baxia is a gorgeous saber in every adaptation! i love her very much, please vote for our evil vanquishing queen who will Not be stopped. (submitted by @valiantbarnes)
Baxia is a huge sword made for cleaving and destroying evil. And if evil isn’t in the immediate vicinity she will find it. She’s angry and out for revenge and comes from a long line of swords that had to be entombed in order to stop them from killing everyone. Baxia has really awesome designs in all versions! (submitted by @absolmon)
Baxia: a sabre of routine! She will cut through literal iron but will sulk for ages if she doesn't get polished every alternate evening. She also treats Hensheng with contempt mixed with pity, much like an older cat to a baby kitten. (submitted by @lilapplesheadcannons)

english translation:
lyrics being sung (ukrainian): “Hey I had me once a horse / Oh that horse was so rambunctious / Had me a sabre and a rifle / And a girl enchantress too…”
the reply (polish): “have you gone mad? what kind of girl am I?”
I don’t actually speak polish, so PLEASE do correct me if the translation is wrong!!! I tried my best with good old online translators, but again, not a native speaker, can’t be sure!!! I just really wanted to include the whole bilingual aspect of the film, because I love it a lot!))

A Role to Play Build 0.04 - Text-message Roleplay and Murder
Howdy, folks! McSkinny here. It's been a minute, but here's a new build for A Role to Play. This build contains quite a bit more story-content than the average Echo-sized update. Additionally, we also got quite a few new pieces of art and music that hopefully make things a bit more polished. It's kind of amazing how much the bar has raised in recent years concerning how professional indie-VN's look.
This time, the gang gets into the full swing of their tabletop gaming, and the pressure is on to really get into character here. Getting used to roleplaying is always a little awkward at first. Some people treat it like writing personal fiction, while others see it more as taking on a different personality and becoming one with the character. For this update, I got in touch with my old D&D dungeon master and Corruption of Champions contributing writer, Donto, and he helped co-write those sections of the script. Sabre of Glory Hounds fame pitched-in quite a bit with editing, and Dendroid from the Echo discord was insanely helpful with some of the Ren'py scripting on the back-end. So, special thanks to all of them! Download Link: https://echoproject.itch.io/a-role-to-play
...
Also, there's a bara lizard in this one. Check it out!

Update Log:
- New story content
- New music
- New art by Sam Beck, Toby, KupoKlein, x0mbi3s, Burnt, and Hiccupby.
- Typo fixes and grammar edits

Yesterday I finally took some photos of Caspar and the raven. I decided to show Caspar as a fighter. He's skilled with daggers and sabre. He's a wanderer so he has to protect himself from villains and dangerous creatures. He also has a mysterious guardian - a raven watching him from afar. That raven has metallic shiny feathers and ruby eyes. Caspar doesn't know why the bird follows him but somehow he feels the raven's not evil.
I have to say it's very tricky to find decent props at a good price. Since I couldn't find 1/4 scale daggers, I had to use some metal charms. The miniature replica of Polish sabre from 1921 looks much better, though it's too heavy for the doll to wield it. The raven's also too small for my boy. I suppose the perspective can do the trick in the photos. I customised the bird a little. I used copper antique paste on its feathers and painted the eyes ruby red. Well, it's actually more magenta but since natural rubies do have such hue, I guess it's OK. Nevertheless, I like how it all turned out.

just so you know you are the reason I watched almost 1 hour of a polish musical despite the fact that I don't speak a word of polish because I liked the songs and the actors looked like they were having fun. didn't even have subtitles :(
Anyways to be fair this isn't the first time something like that happened I'm just weird sometimes.
I enjoyed it, btw, in case that didn't come through in all of this. (haven't got a clue about the plot tho)
SFDGFJFK I admire the dedication bless you !! I think I’ll try to translate it, I’m very slow at making subs though so I don’t know how long it will take 🙈
About the plot, it’s a rather fictionalized story of Mieszko I, who became the first king of Poland. But for now a summary:
Mieszko’s father announces that he retires and Mieszko shall now rule over the tribe of Polans, and orders him to conquer. So Mieszko does, he conquers the nearby slavic tribes, each time marrying someone from them. Then Hodon enters the stage and introduces himself: he’s the markgraf of the Saxon Eastern March, a devout Christian, and although he used to be friends with Mieszko, campaigning together, Mieszko „took something close to [Hodon’s] heart” (a piece of land neighboring his) and therefore must die.
The ending of Hodon’s song introduces another conflict: Mieszko, a pagan, falls deeply in love with Dobrawa, the Christian princess of Czechia. Mieszko tries to convince Dobrawa’s father to allow their marriage but to no vial. (That’s why there’s this dance between Dobrawa and Jesus - to show that Jesus is in the way lol).
Then Pope has a song about teaching the pagans with sword and fire and sends Hodon - his bulwark of Christianity - against Mieszko. Then Hodon challenges Mieszko to a rap battle and wins (Mieszko’s lines are objectively better tho 😞)
Later Dobrawa and Mieszko have a romantic picnic but she asks him to convert and it ends up in an argument because he will never. Anyways, the time skips to Mieszko’s christening. (Hodon has a fun scene where he tries to sneak in but Dobrawa doesn’t let him and when Mieszko comes in they have this exchange „Excuse me” „I won’t”)
The Pope is delighted how big the Christian lands have become and how there’s a new bulwark of Christianity. Hodon still wants to fight Mieszko and the Pope doesn’t understand why, now that Mieszko is a Christian. No matter, Hodon’s army goes to attack Mieszko’s (in his song, Mieszko tells Hodon that he’s attacking the bulwark).
In the meantime Mieszko’s father dies, and Mieszko informs us that the final battle will take place in Cedynia. Hodon sends him a letter asking him to settle this with a duel (using sabres) and Mieszko agrees. Dobrawa is worried but he remains unmoved.
The time for the duel comes, and Mieszko asks Hodon to explain himself, now that the earth will be soaked in one of their’s blood, which Hodon does: “You took everything I wanted” “All of this is because of a piece of land?” “Not that, you Pope’s shameless pet. Don’t be daft, it’s about the bulwark. It’s that the markgrafs won’t be counted among the saints. It’ll be your fault if all that history remembers is that you defeated me in Cedynia”
Mieszko dies in this musical but it’s completely not accurate lol the battle (which indeed Hodon’s army lost) took place 20 years before either of them died.
Sorry for this wall of text 🙈
Also for these who haven’t seen the context, it’s this:
youtube
#long post#sorry!!!#also I’m not sure if I’m correctly translating it to bulwark#it’s suppsoed to be the last defensive wall

dressed elegantly. this will never leave my head. the implications of this.
because geralt and his company, they saddled up, left beauclair, travelled through mountains and frozen blizzards and downpours and muddy sod for two to three months. you need to pack outfits for that. you need to plan your gear.
what was the rest of the company wearing? what did they pack for this long journey? they packed practically, dressed warmly for the frozen journey of january, february, march. geralt wore a wolf-skin cloak, a scarf, a shawl… milva wore a fox-fur kalpak, angoulême wore a hat with a pompom and a sheepskin coat. cahir’s dress isn’t mentioned, but he must have been dressed similarly, because he rubs his hands briskly together and were he not dressed warmly he otherwise would have frozen to death. regis’ dress isn’t mentioned, but it is mentioned that he’s immune to the freezing temperature. so, i mean, it doesn’t matter what he’s wearing in this scene, maybe a regular outfit.
but at stygga. dressed elegantly.
so you’re telling me that. regis packed his things in preparation for their flight from beauclair, went to his quarters after geralt explained to him the satisfactory reasons they were leaving, and went,
“alright, time to prepare for this long and dangerous journey that will conclude in a great clash between our forces and the kidnappers of ciri. the end of our quest. the final journey. and a dangerous road awaits us, with snow still blocking the passes, frost and white all around. a grand fight and conflict awaits us. what gear should i prepare, what should i wear for this expedition, what kinds of clothing should i pack.”
and then he went:
“you know, i want to look fucking good ✨ when we get there 💅🏻🦇”
imagine the final preparation before they approach castle stygga. geralt sees the castle hewn out of the cliffside, effortlessly noticing every detail from far away, seeing like an eagle with his mutated eyes. and like an eagle, compelled to swoop down and snatch vilgefortz like a fish. ordering the company forward, declaring they’ve made it. this is the moment they have all been waiting for. everyone has been waiting such a long time for this. they prepared everything.
they wait until midnight. angoulême eagerly unsheathes and whets her long sabre, swings her axe around with predatory glee. cahir fits the plate armor and winged officer’s helmet he scavenged from a small nilfgaardian dispatch that they ran into extorting caravista for tax. milva tightens the same worn, polished leather bracer that she’s always had on her left arm, and mutters as she fixes her spiralled arrow fletchings over boiling water. geralt, with nothing left to do, paces and breathes, wondering where the hell regis has gone.
just then, regis walks out from behind an outcropping of rock, eyes glinting with cat-like light, in his “elegant” outfit, absolutely slaying that shit, and all his friends look at him absently like. “what the hell are you wearing. where the fuck did you get that. you packed that? you planned your outfit for the final battle, you planned this outfit in advance three months ago?” to which he counters, “well, three months isn’t very long at all,” and they’re like, “this is the preparation you made? we thought you left to do some secret vampire rituals or whatever. or to reckon with yourself for the severe violence we’re about to inflict.” and he’s like “no, i just wanted to make sure i was dressed nicely for the occasion”
#witcher 3 keira metz’s ‘if i’m to die i should look smashing for the occassion’ should really go to book regis i think that’s canon for him#also my headcanon would be that he looses his hair and takes his glasses off#kind of like in a movie where a nerd girl has a glow up and walks down the staircase at the end with her glasses off and hair down#and the boy she’s dating is at the bottom of the stairs like ‘wow… i didn’t know …’#except the boy in this situation is geralt#however it’s less of a cute thing of ‘haha where’d the cute nerdy girl go’ and more of like. um. where is the kind barber surgeon i know#because if you exist quietly and sense the night around you and pay close attention to the moonlight#there are some kind of powerful unknown dark energies brewing and swirling around their group now like fog#he laughs and smiles and he does not purse his lips. and his hair is becoming tangled in the wind#and geralt’s like. who the fuck did i bring to stygga castle. lmao#angouleme: yesss slay uncle | regis: [nods head solemnly] we certainly are | angouleme: noooo like SLAYYYY 🔥🔥🔥#bruh your drip is straight fire 🔥💯#the witcher books#txt#emiel regis#regis#book: lady of the lake#headcanons

Chronicle of Roses Devlog 1: Design Notes Ronya
Li's Portrait of Ronya
Hiya ! This is the first devlog of Chronicle of Roses ! I’m Scarlett, the narrative and game’s designer and today I will showcase the game’s protagonist, Ronya. Showing the influences that helped me mould her character and the concepts for her design as well. This is still early in development and subject to change, those changes will be clear as the project continues.
This game is set in the holy city of Lorne, based in a highly theocratic society headed by a holy prophet worshipped as a protector & harbinger of safety. The citizens heavily disdain witchcraft and magic, anything that goes against their holy scripture. In a cruel twist of fate, Ronya was born with the markings and blood of a witch. Ronya was orphaned as a young child and was taken in personally by the holy prophet Ursula. Ronya was raised to be a soldier, climbing the ranks to the top despite her persecution. Eventually, she became a ‘Raven’, a member of the prophet’s most trusted inner circle of soldiers. Carrying out espionage, scouting, and assassinations under Ursula’s direct orders.
Throughout the game, we follow Ronya as she searches for her lost wife in the newly corrupted Lorne, having to fight old neighbours and comrades whose minds have been lost. Battling against the strings of fate, old prophecies, and horrors beyond human comprehension.
Li's Early Concept Art
Ronya’s inspiration is from a plethora of stories and mythology. Still, a few of the main ones are Ronja the robber's daughter, a Swedish kids' tale about two kids from rival robbers gangs becoming friends, leading to the two gangs making peace eventually. My early idea for Ronya was more feral and outgoing, much like the Ronja of Astrid Lindgren, but we developed her to be more restrained and no-nonsense.
Norse mythology was a heavy surplus of inspiration for Chronicle of Roses, especially for Ronya. We were inspired by Huginn and Muninn, Odin's ravens, and the valkyries of Valhalla. This is where the raven, winged and death motifs came from.
Signalis, Silent Hill, Bloodborne and Dead Space, were heavy inspirations for the game’s plot and characters. Elster as well as Kratos from God of War (2018) were the characters that inspired me to make Ronya more no-nonsense and hard-set on saving the person she loves most. The existential and personal horror of those games were heavy inspirations for COR; Ronya is looking for her wife, time and space are warped and fragmented, and the story is incredibly personal and character-driven. Where the horror is directly linked with a character's mental health, and tackles heavy themes of motherhood, codependency, and hate.
Scarlett's Moodboard
Ronya’s armour and equipment, as well as the rest of the game, are heavily based on the mid-1600s. A time of religious turmoil and witch hunts. Ronya’s main weapon is similar to a Polish sabre, which saw its popularity rise through Europe during the Thirty Years War, & she has access to bombs and early flintlocks, as stealth is not particularly a worry anymore. Her armour is based on the early 1500s to mid-1600s armour that was used throughout Europe.
My intention with her design was to try and showcase a quiet specialist, struggling with her born identity, the use of the black armour and cloak was to symbolise her relation with death. Her hair used to be black in our early designs, but as we started figuring out the different covens and Ronya’s link to fire and magic, we changed to make her hair long and red, almost like a mane, to showcase that separation between her societal identity and her actual identity. To really hit it home with the split of her personhood, we gave her a burn across her face, splitting her face in two, she has loads of other burn scars but they can’t be seen under the armour.
Scarlett's sketches.
Ronya’s story is one of self-actualisation and self-acceptance, her story is a very personal one to me as it is a heavy allegory of queerness and transness, and I’m literally the gayest queer to ever exist and I’m about to start my hormones this coming week ! Ronya’s themes of codependency and having to find purpose and meaning for herself also add to the list of things I grapple with. I use my art to shed light on those struggles to hopefully make someone who relates to this connect with it, see that they’re not alone, and potentially to find my work helpful in their journey of growth.
For next time ! We will showcase Ronya’s and Li’s favourite character, Lilith, the second most important character in the plot of Chronicle of Roses (Ronya being third~).
(Don't mind this being a few minutes late of schedule <3)

I'd like to propose a fictional situation, and I hope you'll weigh in if interested. Let's say a portal opens in modern times, and a single champion of any age, wearing appropriate garb and armor, and a period-accurate weapon, steps out. Assuming no firearms are present, what, in your professional opinion, would be among the most dangerous armor/weapon pairings to exit that portal and face our fictional protagonist(s)?
If we're looking for more specific situations like terrain, let's assume this happens three times: once in the forest with wide clearings but dense underbrush, once in a room with tight corners and obstacles, and once in a mine with good lighting and long but narrow corridors.
First off, I'm not a professional...!
(1) A forest with wide clearings and dense brush: a lightly armoured man-at-arms (mail or brigandine on body, maybe a plackart on the lower abdomen and plates on limbs or at least arms, also some sort of helmet, non-enclosed for good peripheral vision) carrying a late medieval longsword or possibly Swiss sabre, and full Talhoffer / Lichtenauer / dei Liberi training in how to use it.
(2) A room with tight corners and obstacles: either the aforesaid lightly armoured man-at-arms, carrying a short Messer and once again with full training in how to use it OR an unarmoured man with a smallsword and full training in how to use it for combat, not just fencing - so, basic training by Angelo and lethality polish by McBane.
(3) A mine with good lighting and long but narrow corridors: peripheral vision and "nimble" mobility are much less of an issue, so full plate armour with unnecessary equestrian bits left off, carrying a pollaxe (poleaxe) and with full training in its use from "Le Jeu de la Hache" (Axe-play) and possibly an arming sword and dagger at the belt for backup.
That's today's answer, tomorrow's or next week's might differ in some or all respects, and I'm going to be interested to see what others suggest. ;->
HTH!
