A Much Needed Proposal

A/N: This takes place in the future, sadly Alex lost James to violence against his hospital while he was working with Doctors Without Borders again. But that is the last of the angst, I swear! xoxo

Tara Lewis strolled into the martini bar with her Glock and credentials secured in her simple yet elegant bag. She didn’t need a weapon to feel safe, but she was anticipating a case tonight. All the worry and analysis of the workday melted away when Alex Blake caught her eye from across the room. The brunette’s dark eyes sparked across the room, all the chatter and distraction an after thought as Tara finally exhaled.

Alex stood, quickly kissing Tara on each cheek, sneaking a hand hold in for good measure. She had to stretch to meet Tara’s face, especially because she was stunning in two in heels tonight as well. Alex never considered herself short, but when your girlfriend is pure Amazon, it was a given to feel that way.

“Long day?” Alex twisted her lips, knowingly.

“Long month!” Tara exclaimed, waving to the server for a drink, “I can see why you left when you did, two years of this, as your main focus, would make for a quick burn out.”

“There was so much more going on, but after the whole mess with Curtis, then after Reid nearly died, twice. I knew I had to make my own happiness, even after all the years fighting to get back in the Bureau’s good graces.”

“Yeah, well, with all the politics we’ve put up with over the past year, screw their good graces.”

“Tara,” Alex’s tone changed. “Tell me this is just stress talking, because you are a phenomenal profiler.”

The waitress returned with their drinks, as they placed an appetizer order, the tone grew more relaxed. They made small talk, debating on what to get for Rossi’s retirement gift. They both knew he wouldn’t want and couldn’t need anything, but still they liked the puzzle of it. Eventually they decided to propose an award of service to an exemplary agent be named after him, that way he wasn’t actually getting anything and therefore couldn’t complain about it. Too badly at least.

They picked at their orders, sampling from each dish in a languorous fashion, just enjoying the ambiance and the compelling company. After pacing herself all night, Tara turned off her phone. It was nearly eleven o’clock, if Garcia called now all she would be getting was drunken Lewis sass anyhow. Alex smirked, switching to water herself as the tell tale signs of flirty Tara were popping up at increasing intervals.

She was telling a story, her arms spinning out with each explanation. Alex nodded her on, and Tara’s face glowed, her laugh warming the entire restaurant. With the punch line quality conclusion, Alex hit the table in amusement, sending Tara into fits of laughter and snooty glances from the few remaining patrons.

“Hey, here’s an idea, marry me.” Alex said after Tara calmed down with a half a glass of water.

“I’m sorry, what?” Tara’s jaw jutted forward in alarm.

“Will. You. Marry. Me?” Alex enunciated as only a linguistics professor could.

Tara set down her glass and watched her girlfriend watch her. “You’re serious?”

Alex reached over and took Tara’s large hands in hers. “Serious about us.”

“Um, wow, Alex, babe. What can I say?”

“What do you want to say?”

“Uh, I feel like I should be asking Reid’s permission?” Tara joked, the tears sparkling in her eyes. “Yes! Of course.” She leaned forward and took Alex’s face in her hands. The kiss was long and made up of many small and drawn out kisses. But it was their moment and not even the closing manager was going to interupt it tonight.
