man okay so I used to play mechquest and dragonfable back in like, 2008 when I was a kid with very little patience to follow a storyline. coming back as an adult and finishing mechquest has absolutely slapped me silly with how deep and serious the story is in between all the absurdist humour. I have. so many emotions over the whole storyline, and especially so many thoughts about the unique form of tragedy that is The Reset.

You save the world but it's not the world anymore. You and your friends survive but you don't know each other anymore- have nothing left of the lives you fought to keep. You 'save' everything but it's still all gone. Everything you knew and loved, gone, and you don't even know what you've lost. You can't even keep the memory of what you had- and that's almost kinder compared to being one of the 3ish people who DO remember... and have to live around everyone else who doesn't, knowing their closest friends look at them and see a stranger, and that they may as well be because they aren't that person they remember being.

And to top it all off, that terrible sacrifice doesn't even end it. you're still left fighting impossible and devastating wars over and over. It's the tragedy of doomed time loops with extra layers of devastating all over the place. The GEARS University students being forced to become soldiers because they're all that's left to protect their homeworld. The horrors of the Shadowscythe virus taking over friends and loved ones you may be forced to put down to save yourself. The town of Falconreach burning over and over because no matter how hard they fight, it's never enough. The people like Sha'rae who sacrifice themselves to try and prevent tyrrany from seizing power, only for it to be utterly useless.

Anyway the brainrot is severe and especially dangerous since I'm coming into exam season and all my hyperfixated brain wants to do is chew on glass about these games.

The Dragon Reborn: chapters 32-36

There are 56 chapters. At my approximate rate of one chapter per business day, I can expect to finish this around October 21st, two months after I started it. (It'll probably take longer, unless I magically gain some free time soon.) I have, admittedly, been reading other books in the middle of this one, something I don't normally do but is helping me! Now, uh, where were we --

Escape from Tar Valon 2: Electric Boogaloo

Mat and Thom are on a boat! The boat captain hates everyone who isn't Tairen, basically, and especially hates the Aes Sedai. He keeps bringing up "High Lord Samon" -- which is news to Thom, who knows the names and faces of all the rulers in Randland.

There's another assassination attempt on Mat but he and Thom fight the brigands off.

Mat stumbled down the ladder, stepped over the two bodies in the passage, and slammed the door of the captain's cabin behind him. He made it halfway to the bed before the shaking hit him, and then all he could do was sink down on his knees. Light, what game am I playing in? I have to know the game if I'm going to win. Light, what game?

"What game" indeed.

Rand is having his mental breakdown in the woods.

Perrin is doing his best not to sleep. Do not follow his or Rand's example. Sleep deprivation ain't a good look. I really like how important dreams are. I also really like that we have (currently) 3 separate connections to the Dreaming: Rand's whatever, Egwene's Dreamwalker shenanigans, and Perrin's wolfbrother stuff.

Anyway, they encounter a small town where there's an Aielman in a cage and a young woman who stares at Perrin.

"Ah." Furlan [the innkeeper] washed his hands in one direction, then rubbed them in the other. "Ah. Forgive me, Master Andra, but Lady Alys is a fierce-sounding woman."

"Only with those who displease her," Lan said blandly. "Her bite is far worse than her bark."

[Perrin] did not think anyone needed to look after Nynaeve; around Nynaeve, to his mind, other people needed someone to look after them.

I believe it.

There's some dude telling stories in the tavern about defeating 20 Aiel, which was obviously a big fat lie lol. Perrin decides to free the Aielman and together they kill a bunch of Whitecloaks.

[Perrin] hated the gaping wounds the axe made, hated the way it chopped through mail to rend flesh beneath, split helmet and skull with almost equal ease. He hated it all. But he did not want to die.

Sweetie, maybe you need to switch to a quarterstaff. Axe ain't your only option here.

Nonetheless, this is something that's missing in a lot of newer fantasy books. There's so little regret for taking a life. Death is shrugged off, "oh, I had to kill them to save myself". It feels more natural to be struggling with this than to simply accept it.

They have to leave town in a hurry thanks to Perrin's choices here. On a boat* again, and someone pulls a Mat and leaps from the dock to the deck to follow them.

It's the girl who was staring at Perrin, she's Hunting the Horn of Valere, and she's going to start calling herself Faile.

That night Perrin finally sleeps. And he dreams of Hopper, our beloved wolf, who takes him to see a meeting between Selene and Ba'alzamon.

Hey, is Ba'alzamon the dark one? Because I thought he was, but right now I'm kinda thinking he's actually Ishamael, due to his excessive lace collar and cuffs.

Happy Birthday one of my favourite Scottish folk singer’s Dick Gaughan.

Born Richard Peter Gaughan in 1948 in Glasgow he first picked up the guitar at the age of seven, and issued his debut solo LP, No More Forever, in 1972,Gaughan then signed on with the folk-rock group the Boys of the Lough, releasing a 1973 self-titled LP before returning to his solo career with 1976’s Kist o Gold.

In the late ‘70s and early '80s, he worked as a critic and columnist with Folk Review magazine, and also acted as a member of the 7:84 Theatre Company; after a three-year absence from the studio, Gaughan also returned to regular musical duty with the release of 1981’s Handful of Earth. A Different Kind of Love Song followed in 1983, and in 1985 he released Live in Edinburgh; True and Bold appeared a year later. After 1988’s Call It Freedom,

Gaughan again retreated from view; much of his time was devoted to his increasing interest in computer technology, and he later earned notice for his skills as a programmer and web designer. Finally, he formed a new band, the short-lived Clan Alba, who disbanded after releasing their 1995 self-titled debut.

Dick has released many songs through the years and many have been recorded by others including, Billy Bragg, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Roy Bailey and Capercaillie. Spotify just released my 2022 Unwrapped, where they basically let you know who you have been listening to the most this year by giving you a top 5. I'm not at all surprised by my number 1. lol It is Aly & AJ. I just love those girls so much! They're so ridiculously talented! Number 2 went to beabadoobee. She is very underrated IMO! Number 3 went to Echosmith. I'm a BIG fan of Echosmith! I just went to see them about a month ago and I have been listening to them a lot lately. Coming in at number 4 is Tate McRae. I was storing them as layers in .mdp files, but it turns out they add up quick and 200+ layers make things run slow... so I decided to make a sideblog to save them all on instead.
