Almost, Maine by John Cariani!
This is a sweet, delightful, lovely little play!
I love the writing style of this bad boy. It feels really human to me (or perhaps it is just similar to how I talk in the real world). It is a play where I felt I could hear and see the characters as I was reading it. I believe it appealed to my more romantic sensibilities quite well.
It has a ton of wonderful two-person scenes! This is because it is near entirely compromised of two-person scenes (which are tied together by theme and tone as opposed to plot. Think Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses). I am especially fond of both versions of They Fell. I am also a fan of the names in the script itself changing only when characters learned one another's names.
Overall, I think this guy is a delightful, whimsical little love letter to human connection. You should read it if you can!

i currently have writers block for the trevrasha secret agent fic so i’m gonna explain the hs theatre au
(yapping under the cut!)
ok so the au is mostly spommy but there’s background trevrasha and damangela and established shourtney
basically courtney convinces spencer to try out for their senior play, and he ends up getting cast, which he didn’t expect.
So the play is almost, maine which is a set of scenes that take place in the same town at the same time. there’s also magical realism in it that usually involves literal metaphors (ex. a character carries her actual broken heart in a bag, someone’s “other shoe” literally drops from the sky, two characters uncontrollably “fall” for each other over and over, etc.)
the version of the play that i did (and that the fic is based off of is) the fourth revised edition (idk if that really means anything but i’m putting here anyway).
All of the scenes have something to do with love (falling into it or out of it) and there’s one gay scene and there’s a male version and a female version of it. i played deena (the female equivalent of Spencer’s part) but in my au they do the male version. The scene basically entails two best friends hanging out and talking about their bad dates and Chad (Tommy’s character) falling in love with randy (Spencer’s character) and randy being scared and confused and worried about how it will affect their friendship before realizing that he’s in love with him, too.
Which, you guessed it, will parallel Tommy and Spencer’s feelings in real life!
anyway here’s the cast list (the cast members (including spencer, tommy, and kimmy) are seniors, and the crew members are juniors, except for erin, mallory, and peter, who are sophomores)

Almost, Maine: where East meets glory
Almost, Maine premiered in New College’s Black Box Theater (BBT) Feb. 1 and ran until Feb. 4, 2024, bringing in the new school year with lots of glorified love, pain and even sweet release. Written by John Cariani, Almost, Maine was performed by a handful of New College students. The show was directed by Professor of English and Theater, Dance & Performance Studies Nova Myhill in collaboration…

There’s more tragedy to Her Heart than we think you know
Glory being forced to leave what she’s known by this delusion that Maine is this safe haven only to get there and meet East in the least expected way possible. Her heart is broken, she doesn’t think there’s any way to fix it, she’s travelling solely to say goodbye to the person that did this too her in the first place.
I don’t know I just don’t think it’s as sappy and romantic as it’s usually read. Glory is a tragic character, she just starts her happy ending.
