From the gothic romanization of 𐌲𐌿𐌽𐌳, from Proto-Germanic *gundą, a variant of *gundaz, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰendʰ- (“sore, ulcer, abscess, boil”). Cognate with Ancient Greek κανθύλη (kanthúlē, “swelling”).
