Review of logitech G335 headset
I don't usually do these kinds of posts, but I want to review my new headset. My quest for decent headphones has been a long and arduous one. I used to get those cheap-o headphones from Walmart that are technically for children—I have a pretty small head and welcomed the volume cap at whatever decibels, plus the colors were fun. I want to say these were under $35 (maybe even under $25), and just as you would expect from off-brand headphones, the sound quality was mediocre and they lasted maybe a year if I was lucky.
My latest ones died maybe September/October, and I decided enough was enough, I needed to upgrade to better headphones. Here were my requirements:
wired with 3.5mm audiojack (if I have to worry about charging my headphones, I'm not gonna use them)
comfortable even when wearing glasses (self-explanatory)
decent sound (those cheap-o Walmart ones gave me the best quality of all my speakers so this wouldn't be here, so easily done)
cute colors if possible
in the price range of ~$60 (and under $100 if I need to go higher)
I got myself the Recon 70 headset from Turtle Beach (apparently Roccat rebranded?), they came in cute colors, were $40, had a decent return policy, etc. Wonderful! Ordered them November in lavender. Second time I try using them, the sound is all garbled, like only the background music could be heard? It was awful, and due to holiday madness, I just let them sit until January, when I had my sister confirm that my hearing wasn't to blame. Returned those suckers.
And I had given up! I was at the mercy of some shitty earbuds, and just used external speakers whenever possible. It was only my sister needing to go to MicroCenter and then convincing me to check out the huge array of headsets displayed there, that I bothered revisiting my need for (halfway decent) headphones. And I actually had a positive experience!
I ended up spending $90 on the logitech G335 headset in black—not super happy about the "boring" color, but the band that goes across the head was a bold purple/blue, and that splash of color was enough to appease me. To start, the packaging was really nice! It was all cardboard or paper materials, no plastic packaging in sight, which was a pleasant surprise. (I would commend logitech for this, but their controller (which I've been very happy with for a while now) came in the most unfriendly to open package, entirely plastic, so it's either new or something they reserve for the "G" series.) Also, I usually don't care, but the headset was actually fun to unbox! There were tabs to push and pull—very easy to do but very engaging, like a simple puzzle.
Ok, let's talk about the actual headset. They are very comfortable. The ear cushions lack any of that pleather nonsense that my sensitive, autistic ass cannot stand the texture of. Very soft. Noticeably more uncomfortable when worn with glasses, but not to the point where it's distracting. A sensory win.
The build quality seems pretty solid overall, not high end by any means but blowing my cheap-o Walmart headphones out of the water. The branding isn't obtrusive, and the headband is both comfortable and cute. I would have liked a braided cable for the aux, but ah well. The rubber is fine. I'll probably reinforce the ends with some embroidery thread or something to help prevent fraying (plus I can match the thread color with the band for a little more pizazz).
The G335 headset also comes with an audio splitter! This is really cool, because while most devices combine input/output, my desktop PC does not, and I would need a splitter to even just listen to music on it. It's nice that this is included in the $90 price tag. Speaking of, it was a bit more expensive than what I was hoping for, but it might be worth it for the quality, so I'm not about to spill any tears over it.
I have only been using them for 2 days, so it still remains to be seen if they hold up. However, in those 2 days, I am pretty satisfied with the audio quality. There's a volume wheel on the back of the left ear piece, which does NOT modify the system volume of your device, but rather just changes the output volume of the actual headphones (I think). This means it should work fine no matter what you're plugged in to (I think). It also has a microphone that unmutes when you pull it down, but I cannot speak to the quality of the mic, since I haven't used it yet.
All in all, I am very happy with my logitech G335 headset. It also comes in white/blue, and mint (which I would have opted for if the MicroCenter had any in stock). It's comfortable, decent build quality, and the sound is decent. Finally, I have headphones that actually work!
