Day 1: Nairobi / Samburu Game Reserve

Drive north to Samburu on the south bank of the Uaso Nyiro River, downriver from Archer’s Post to arrive at the Lodge for lunch and afternoon game drive. North of the Equator some of the animals and vegetation are a little different from those commonly found south. Elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah and the usual buck and antelopes are common to both north and south of the equator. However unfamiliar animals are the Gravy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich. There is also the long neck gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and hunting dog. Crocodiles in the river can be seen from the lodge/tented camp. The vegetation is usually dry grass with a few swampy patches. There is some forest cover along the Uaso Nyiro River and an abundance of doum palms. All meals, Lunch, Dinner and Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 2: Samburu game reserve

After breakfast, another day in this harshly beautiful terrain where wildlife abounds especially nears the river which is their only source of drinking water. The Uaso Nyiro River flows gently through the dry landscape sustaining life in this harsh land. Shaba National Reserve is where the famous conservationist George Adamson did his research on lions. In the Afternoon you will set out on another game drive and return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Samburu / Lake Nakuru

After breakfast the tour leaves for Nyahururu (Thompsons Falls) at an altitude of 7,738 feet. The falls are named after the Scots explorer Joseph Thompson who was the first European to discover the falls in 1884. Then comes the descent into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National park for lunch at one of the hotels. An afternoon drive in the park to enjoy the sight of pelicans bathing in the fresh water streams which terminate in Lake Nakuru. Since there is no existing drainage, Lake Nakuru is alkaline, the perfect place for flamingos to feed on the blue-green algae. The greater flamingo attains a height of about 4.26 feet its plumage is almost white with a pale pink, black tipped beak. It is the lesser flamingo that has the more exotic color. This Park has a great variety of bird life which includes the Egyptian goose and a variety of ducks that come from Europe to winter, its truly a bird watchers paradise. The park is also a sanctuary for the white rhino and other wild game. Return to the Lodge for Dinner and Overnight.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru / Masai mara

After breakfast, drive to Masai mara game reserve to arrive in time for lunch at the lodge. Masai mara is “Kenya’s finest game reserve. Pass through the lower scenic mau escarpment road into the Rift Valley to the 1792 square, a distance of 275-320kms via Narok town climbing the Hemingway's wall “The Serengeti plains"this park actually forms the northern part of the Serengeti national park in Tanzania. Masai Mara National Reserve to arrive in time for lunch. The afternoon is spent on a game drive in search of the black manned lions which the park is famous, Lion making a kill can be witnessed in the late afternoon or a leopard in a tree enjoying the meal he has dragged up to avoid disturbance and detection. This reserve has hilly savanna, rolling grasslands, gallery forest on the Mara River and its tributaries. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Masai mara game reserve

After breakfast, full day of game viewing. Exploration this part of the Northern Serengeti Ecosystem where the great wildebeest migration takes place at the beginning of August. Months before the actual migration the herds ‘assemble’ in Serengeti in readiness for the crossing into Masai Mara. The plain is literally covered with these animals. Grunts and other animal sounds are heard, and territorial fights are commonplace. Africa has a long history of capturing the imagination of travelers, a continent of dramatic contrasts that gives you an unforgettable and remarkable experience whether it’s in an amazement of watching thousands of wild beasts struggling across a rushing river that is littered with crocodiles waiting for their prey, makes the world’s premier wildlife spectacle. Day 6: Masai mara / Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, drive to Lake Naivasha, along the floor of the Rift valley, now with more familiar memories of the landscape; arrive for lunch at the lodge, afternoon proceed on your adventure to various attractive features and places in Lake Naivasha. Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree. These forests abound with bird life, and Naivasha is known as a world class birding. The waters of the lake draw a great range of game to these shores. Giraffes wander among the acacia, Buffalo wallow in the swamps and Colobus monkeys call from the treetops while the Lakes large hippo population sleeps the day out in the shallows. The region surrounding the Lake is well worth exploring. Day 7: Lake Naivasha / Amboseli

After breakfast, check out and drive to Amboseli national park; the journey continuous south, passing through the Athi Plains where formerly the Burchell's zebra, the Masai giraffe and smaller herbivores roamed about freely. With human encroachment the wildlife is confined to game parks. There is an advantage to this because one has to drive inside a park to be rewarded with the sight of many different species of animals. Amboseli National Park is reached late in the afternoon, for lunch; embark on an afternoon game viewing in the park at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft). In the late afternoon one is likely to see a lion or cheetah make a kill. Ideal photography opportunities with Mount Kilimanjaro highest mountain in Africa providing a beautiful back drop. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Amboseli / Nairobi

Early morning game drive can be taken in Amboseli when Mt. Kilimanjaro appears from its mantle of clouds. Proceed to the area of Lake Amboseli, which is a wide salt pan, consisting of permanent swamps. This area has much game, large and small, high concentration of Elephant, rhino, buffalo, Burchell's zebra, eland, Masai giraffe and small species of the antelope family the common water buck, klipspringer, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi, and the diminutive duiker among others. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli national park is home to wild animals, which include the African elephant, buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffes, zebra, and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenya birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting. Drive to Nairobi arriving at the airport in the late afternoon.

Summary: An accident during a mission sends you back in time to the second world war. There you enlist the help of Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes to find the object that can send her back.

Im unsure if I will be continuing the OC fic currently, I may just transfer it completely to my reader Fic. Prologue

Storm clouds hung heavy in the sky as you sat in the back of a jeep bound for the current SSR base in Italy. Almost two years of searching and there was barely any information on the bell to go off of. It was beyond frustrating. At this rate, you were starting to wonder if you would ever get back to your time. Granted, all of the documents you brought back were dated 1943 or later, chances were development on the bell had only just begun. And if that were the case, hopefully, it wasn't going to take them seventy years to finish.

Your general lack of ability to change anything also proved to be frustrating as hell. Only Peggy knew of your true origins. They had both decided against going around saying you were from the future, god only knew that would just get them both locked up. However, as a result, that meant you were far less likely to be believed any time you tried to keep an event from happening if you lacked any evidence. you never thought you would sympathize with Cassandra.

“I was beginning to wonder when you'd show up.” A familiar voice teased as the jeep came to a halt. You smiled as you saw Peggy waiting to inspect the arriving convoy. Peggy had managed to make the last two years far more bearable, becoming quick friends with you.

“You know me,” You said, jumping out of the back of the jeep. “I like to keep everyone guessing.”

Peggy smiled as you approached. “Perhaps a little too much.” She accused. “How was Paris?”

You shrugged and canted your head, “Beautiful city, great food, interesting history.” You crossed your arms. “Too bad I wanted to shoot the majority of my company.”

“I trust you were able to resist the temptation?” Said Peggy eyeing you in amusement.

“Figured I would let the boys have the nazi killing fun for now.” You sniffed indignantly. “Kind of regret it now. At least then I would have something to account for coming back.”

“No luck on the bell?”

“No luck on anything.” You corrected, “A whole lot of Nazis but no hydra. It seems the intel we had was either old or false.”

Peggy nodded at one of the soldiers carrying a crate from a truck. “You think they’ve caught on to us?”

You chewed your cheek. “I'm not sure. I can't say they knew I was coming, or I’d be dead. Or at least so I would assume. I don't see any reason why they would keep me alive knowing I'm a spy. But at the same time, there wasn't a single member of hydra there. I've never seen that before, usually there's at least one.

Peggy narrowed her eyes. “If we aren't being fed false information then somethings happening.”

“And whatever it is, I think the ones outside of hydra are just about as in the dark as we are. Hydra’s making a play, a big one.”

“A faction split?” Peggy offered.

“It's possible. But if it's that, they've got to be pretty confident that they can win.” You scratched the back of your neck, entirely unsure of what to make about any of it.

Peggy nodded, “If what the surviving 107th are saying is true, it seems they've got just that.” Seemingly content with the convoy, Peggy started towards the SSR command tent. “Your history books say anything about this?”

You followed close behind. “About the 107th? Not much. They get captured, Captain America comes in and saves the day singlehandedly. Dunno how much stock I put into to all that personally. Lotta things about the Cap and hydra got covered up after the war by shield. Especially in the history books.”

Peggy frowned, walking into the tent. “I can believe it. I've seen Rogers in action, unfortunately, the army seems content parading him around America singing about war bonds.

Your eyebrows shot up. “Excuse me, what?”

“Peggy gestured to the poster hanging from a support beam of the tent. “Captain America,” it read, “on tour: Allied bases across Europe and North Africa.” You bit your lip to keep from laughing, this was not how you ever imagined meeting Captain America.

“They, they really have him singing?” You said, fighting to keep a straight face.

“Dancing at the very least,” said Peggy, not sounding the slightest bit amused. “Bloody waste if you ask me. He’ll be arriving and preforming here tomorrow.”

You shook your head, still staring at the poster. “I wouldn't miss it for the world.”

The captain's performance was, frankly, every bit as hilarious as you expected. The rest of the crowd, however, didn't seem to agree. Instead, they demanded the dancing girls come back on stage. You grimaced as the famous Steve Rogers walked off stage, noticeably embarrassed. The Captain America you knew was a hero, a legend even. But this was before all of his exploits before he saved the world more times than you could count. He barely seemed to be the same man.

You held back for a time, figuring he would want space after such a humiliation. But, as the rain that had been threatening for two days now began to pour, you went searching for him. Surely there was something that pushed him out of the theater and into heroism because he was far better at the latter. Whose brilliant idea even was it to have him dancing around in the first place?

You found him with Peggy, taking refuge from the rain under a wooden awning behind the stage. Peggy's face was stern as you neared, “And these are your only options? Lab rat or dancing monkey?”

“War hero seems like a fun third option.” You cut in, earning a raised eyebrow from Peggy. “Or, you know, literally anything else.”

He looked at you with apprehension and confusion as Peggy took a patient breath. “What Agent L/N means, is you were meant for more than this.”

You extended a hand to him. “Sorry, my humor isn't for everyone. Y/N L/N.”

He nodded, shaking your hand. “Steve Rogers.” He sighed as his attention was pulled to an arriving red cross truck. “These men look like they've gone through hell.”

You crossed your arms, “They've gone through war.”

“These men more than most. They're what's left of the 107th.” Peggy agreed and you winced. What these men had seen seemed to make hell seem heavenly.

Steves' eyes went wide. “The 107th?” He was up and running to the command tent before Peggy could even respond. You and Peggy shared a glance before chasing after him through the rain.

Col. Phillips sat signing what were presumably condolence letters at his desk in the back fo the tent as steve rushed up to him. Phillips looked up just barely before returning to the letters. “If it isn't the star-spangled man with a plan. What do I own the pleasure.”

“I need the casualty list from Azzano,” Steve said with unexplained urgency.

Phillips looked up from his papers with a glare. “You don't get to give me orders.”

“I just need one name,” Steve continued, “Sergeant James Barnes of the 107th.” The name tugged the back of your memory, you had heard it somewhere before, in a museum maybe? That was right, you recalled the handsome picture of a soldier engraved in stone in the howling commando exhibit at the Smithsonian. He had been the one that died. Steve lost his best friend. You gave him a pitiful look as he argued with Phillips, you had always thought that Barnes became a commando before dying.

“But I don't expect you to understand that because you're a chorus girl.” Phillips's harsh words pulled you out of your thoughts.

“I think I understand just fine,” Steve responded coolly.

“Then understand it somewhere else, if I read the posters right you have somewhere to be in 30 minutes.” Phillips moved passed him to look over maps with another officer, making his stance on the conversation clear.

“Yes sir,” Steve said, studying the large map board in front of him, “I do.” He turned on his heels and rushed out of the tent, leaving you and Peggy in his wake.

“I’ll go after him,” Peggy whispered to you. “We need maps and supplies, whatever you can think of, then meet us in the hangar as soon as you can.”

You nodded letting Peggy follow after Steve. You stood there for a moment, pretending to study the map board before quickly and casually taking a smaller map off Col. Phillips desk and slipping it into your coat. With a nod to the nearest officer, you walked out of the tent and into the rain.

Already thoroughly drenched from your previous two treks thought the rain, you didn't bother trying to shield yourself from the downpour as you made your way to the nearest storehouse. Knowing Peggy, they were probably going to get court-martialed with whatever she had planned, so might as well go the whole hog and steal any supplies Steve might need.

You grabbed a gunny sack as soon as you entered the storeroom and started filling: A compass, multiple rations of food, a blanket, flashlight, rope, matches. Anything and everything that you could think of that he might need should he get lost. ‘Cause God knows, the way he was charging off, he damn well didn't consider any of this.

“Hey!” A guard called to you. “You aren't authorized to take any of this!”

You slung the sack over your shoulder as the guard approached. “Youll find that I am, private.” You bluffed. “Under official SSR orders. Unless that is, you want to waste Col Phillips time clearing it with him first?” The guard blanched at the mention of Phillips's name.

“No, Ma’am!” He said quickly, stepping out of your way. You gave a sharp nod before escaping the warehouse. you started toward the Hangar before pausing and looking at the stage. A devilish smile came over you as you changed your course.

The backstage was empty when you entered, likely all the actors and dancers were still on break, leaving the costumes unguarded. Because, really, who on earth would want to steal them, besides you. You hummed the tune to ‘star-spangled man’ as you picked up a helmet with a large white ‘A’. One thing was for sure, steve was going to save the 107th in (extremely questionable) style.

Peggy, Steve, and Stark were waiting at the hangar when you arrived, helmet in hand, a grin plastered across your face. “You know, for a star-spangled man with a plan, I'm wondering if you've ever had a plan in your life.” You teased, handing him the helmet and sack of supplies.

Steve gave you a look as he fiddled with the helmet, “In all fairness ma’am, you haven't known me long.”

“First impressions mean a lot, Rogers.” You shrugged, moving onto Peggy. “Though I’m not sure if this plan is much better than no plan,” You said in a low voice only Peggy could hear.

“We don't have many other options at the current moment.” Peggy defended as Steve and Stark boarded the plane. “Unless you somehow convinced Col. Phillips to give us an army.”

“I'm not a miracle worker.” You sighed.

“You said he was able to do this single-handed, we just need to have faith.” Peggy took a deep breath, even she didn't seem completely convinced.

You nodded, “Time to prove the history books right. I’ll stay grounded to try to keep the colonel distracted. Go.” You gave a mock salute as the plane took off, leaving you behind.

Keeping Phillips occupied until the plane returned proved to be quite easy. He was already extremely busy, and with some strategic playing dumb and careful excuses as to why you were doing Peggy's work, he was none the wiser until the plane landed the next morning. Then the shit hit the fan.

Steve didn't come back. Two weeks after the flight to Austria and there was absolutely no sign of him either. Phillips was furious, you did everything in your power to avoid him, though you knew it wouldn't be long before consequences came. There was a good possibility that your chance to get home was lost if Steve didn't show up.

You sat on the ground against a tree, picking at your fingers. At this point, you didn't even care about getting home. Instead, you couldn't shake the guilt of getting an avenger killed before the avengers were even a thing. The guilt of it alone made it difficult for you to even sleep at night. you would have gone into Austria yourself to find him, if Phillips hadn't expressly forbidden it, and kept an armed guard on you 24/7 as a baby sitter.

“You look like a child that's been sent to the headmaster,” Peggy said looking down at you.

You nodded, “Feel like it too.”

“Do you regret helping him?” Peggy asked, voice tight.

You sighed and looked up at her, “I regret not helping him more.” You admitted, “I teased him about not having a plan, and then didn't even try to give him one. I could have followed that dumbass into Austria myself.” The young soldier acting as your baby sitter shifted uncomfortably. “Stop acting like you've never heard a woman fucking swear Simmons.”

“Y-yes ma’am” He stammered and you rolled your eyes.

“We did everything we could for him,” Peggy reassured, ignoring Simmons. “He would have walked to Austria if we didn't help him.”

You laughed weakly, “I’ve done stupider things.” You paused for a beat, biting your lip, “Peggy, I, I’m sorry about this all. I could tell how much you liked him.”

Peggy swallowed, “Yes, well. I'm glad he wasn't stuck as a dancing monkey.” She cleared her throat, “I'm going to speak with Col. Phillips if you would like to join me.”

You scoffed, “No, I'd rather him find me if he wants to chew me out.” Peggy nodded and left you sitting under your tree. No doubt Phillips would be in a bad mood. He was finally calling off the searches today, officially labeling Steve Rogers as KIA. God, if only you had just gone with him as back up, at least then either he would be alive or you’d be too dead to care.

You threw your head back in frustration as hoots and hollers came from the front of the camp. Soldiers began running to the gates, curious, you joined them. You gasped when you saw what the soldiers were congregating for.

A hundred some odd men came marching through the gates, Steve Rogers, Captain America, leading the way. Cheers rippled through the crowd as the group walked through the camp, stopping in front of Col. Phillips. You slipped between the men in efforts to get a better view.

“Hey!” The man next to steve yelled, making you freeze, surprised, as you saw the familiar handsome face of a man you had only seen in museum exhibits. “Let's hear it for Captain America!” The crowd roared, men throwing their caps in the air, whistling, yelling, clapping. You found yourself clapping too as Barnes’s eyes locked onto yours for a brief moment. He smiled faintly as he caught sight of you, a sparkle of something in his steel-blue eyes as you shifted your attention to finding Col. Phillips.

You moved through the crowd in search of him, only to find him missing from it. you soon found him exactly where you expected him to be, the SSR command tent. you wore a sly smirk that would have read ‘I told you so” Had he bothered to look up at you. Instead, he focused on packing away his desk. “Don't think for a moment that just because Captain Rogers came back that you're off my shit list Agent L/N.”

You frowned, “He saved at least a hundred and fifty men. I played a part in that.”

“And that’s exactly why I'm not court martialing you for theft of government property.” He said as he tucked away a folder into a box. “Tell Agent Carter to pack her things, we’re returning to London for debriefing first thing tomorrow.”

You scowled, “Yes sir.”

Joe’s Weather Blog: The subtleties of forecasting heat (FRI-6/29)

Good afternoon…and happy TGIF. This has been another hot week (mostly in KC) and next week, while not to the extreme I don’t think…will still be hot and above average. As a matter of fact the only day that looks to be close to seasonable is Sunday. That will be dependent on the extent of clouds though. There are other subtleties about next week that I want to write about as well.

Forecast:

Tonight: No real changes…lows in the 75-80° range

Saturday: About the same with highs 95-100°.

Saturday night: Tracking storms across NW MO and NE KS sagging southwards. How long they hold together when they approach KC late at night into Sunday early AM will determine how much rain we get. For now amounts may range from nothing to about 1″. Areas farther north should do better though.

Sunday: We should see quick AM drying then variable clouds. More sunshine and we’re closer to 90°…more clouds and we’re about 5° cooler or so.

Discussion:

Another roasty…toasty day out there…the temperatures are in the mid 90s for many and some are closing in on 100°. The title of today’s blog refers back to this tweet I sent out this morning…

Could today be the day of the 1st 100° @KCIAirport since 2013? Maybe. Our dew points are a few degrees lower this morning than yesterday …there is a bit more of a breeze. No clouds…BUT the air mass is a few degrees cooler above us too #subleties #stayhydrated JL

Meteorologists wrangle over the subtleties of forecasting temperatures. Some days more than others. Today was one of those days (at least for me). There are subtle differences today compared to yesterday. Here is a look at the last 36 hours of temperatures…I’ve highlighted the items to write about.

The data is for KCI…the “official” KC weather station of record

Look to the far right…see the 99? that’s yesterday’s high.

Look at the bottom number highlighted in blue…that is the 2PM temperature at KCI…now look to the top highlight…that is the 2PM temperature as I start this blog. We’re one degree hotter at 2PM today compared to yesterday.

Now look a the dew points yesterday (75°)…now at 2PM today…69°…that is actually a pretty significant drop (7°) and as a result the heat index today is not as “hot” as yesterday. At 2PM it “feels like” 102° while yesterday with the higher dew points and the “less one degree” temperature the heat index was 107°. So there is a 5° change just basically because of the lower dew points.

Notice as well the increase in the winds today…yesterday SW at 9…today SSW/S gusting to 25-30°. That signifies more stirred up air and what we refer to as “mixing” and that means temperature could be hotter today…it also allows the air to dry out a pinch…hence the lower dew points.

So I was all ready to jump on the 100° bandwagon for the noon show…then I checked the temperature of the air just above the surface this morning…and it was running more than a few degrees “cooler” than yesterday…that gave me pause for pulling the trigger.

So in the end I’m agonizing over whether or not today will be 98°…99° or 100°. The subtleties of forecasting intense heat in KC.

I stuck with the 99° forecast. Let’s see where we stop. I’ll be irritated IF we hit 100°. 1) because I didn’t pull the trigger and 2) because it hasn’t happened since 9/2013!

Moving onwards…

Next week will be interesting. I sent this tweet out yesterday afternoon in light of the dust I was observing moving through the Atlantic Ocean. This is pretty common as dust streams off the continent of Africa and follows the winds aloft.

Notice the murky “brownish” shading…that is African dust…most prevalent near the coast of Africa…it disburses as it travels eastwards. I brought this up because, despite all the heat and humidity today, we actually have some decent blue skies out there…I wonder though IF next week that may change a bit.

Some of that dust is already in the western Gulf Of Mexico and will be streaming up towards us over the weekend…then perhaps get shoved back south…then come back north. We have models that can forecast the extent of this type of “aerosol”.

This model forecast is for next Tuesday at 7PM…the greenish areas are the thicker “haze/dust” but notice there is some “thinnish” dust moving through our area. The reason why I bring this up is I’ll be curious IF the skies aren’t quite as vibrant blue next week as they are today. IF not, assuming there is no cloud cover…it might be because we have some African dust moving through the Plains!

Onwards to the rain situation.

I’ve written about this since before the models were really indicating anything…and that would be the storm/fading rains heading our way during the middle of the weekend.

Nothing has really changed with regards to this…we still have decent+ chances of rain BUT the issue is how much we get before things sort of peter out in the cooling atmosphere. The front now is across the northern Plains…

Ahead of the front 90s/100s are prevalent. That front will slowly move towards us over the weekend. Storms will ignite tomorrow towards the NW of KC…and some may be severe too!

The issue for the Metro is that the storms will be on a declining trend (I think) when they move towards us…probably near or after 9PM-12AM. IF they can organize better and IF then can create some sort of cold pool and IF they can then surge more southwards…we might have something more to talk about…but that is a lot of IFs.

It’s not out of the question for this to happen.

Again the issue is the later this occurs the less instability will be left for the storms to feed off of. The atmosphere will be pretty swollen with moisture though…so IF we can get some slow movers there may be some locally heavy rains…

A lot of caveats for sure…but DON’T be surprised IF parts of the region are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch later Saturday.

At the very edge of the hole, there was a little digital notepad. They have a white base the size of an old smartphone with a  6-inch transparent screen. Surprisingly, it was still completely functional. The hole must have acted as some sort of time capsule. After scrolling through a few trivial logs about a man's describing certain events in short detail, I come across the last entry. It's much longer than the other logs.

The good news was that they had reduced its size to about a third of the size of Washington D.C.

Trust me, that’s the good news. When we first spotted it two months back it was the size of fucking Sri Lanka; twenty-seven times bigger than the one that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

The Bad news was it was still on its way. They gave us 16 days, 9 hours, and 37 minutes. 

That was the amount of time humanity had before it hit Alice Springs at 80 kilometers per second, with a diameter of 23 kilometers, creating an impact 3 times the size of Chicxulub.

Australia would be completely gone; there was no hope for it. An entire continent would be nothing more than a massive crater surround by a desolate wasteland.

The UN had gathered all of their resources, had joined all the countries together, in order to stop the asteroid. We sent 3 different spaceships filled with nukes to the asteroid in an attempt to destroy it. The Impact, the Horizon, and the Quasar, they were all only minor successes, each one only breaking off a piece of it. Each one cost the lives of everyone on board, yet it was practically worth nothing.  Despite our technology advancing to the point where we thought our anti-asteroid defenses were more than enough to stop any rock hurtling towards earth, we were proven wrong. 

2039 will be the year we were shown how powerless the entire human race is to the outside forces.

The U.S tried to calm us down the best it could. They knew our main concern was, first of all, the effects of the impact itself. We were told that the chance of survival was notably low but plausible. However, there would still be devastation. Almost all countries that neighbored the Continent were fucked. Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Zealand would face 9.8 Earthquakes, followed by Mega Tsunamis. The moment the asteroid reached the ground the entire surface of Australia would be vaporized instantly, and that was only the beginning of our problems. Astronomers were fairly sure that the meteor would sent dust clouds in a giant cone-shaped direction moving southwest across the globe.  The dust clouds are predicted to cover the earth for 9 years; it would be the end of all life on this planet.

The U.S had a plan. Since the dust would take the longest to reach North America and the country would receive the least impact; we came up with a plan to take massive boats, capable of holding half of a billion passengers, and send them all across the globe in order to haul people to the U.S to their bunkers.

There was one problem. We had realized there weren't nearly enough boats to carry everyone else in the world, thus the UN called together all the world leaders and gave them a simple order: rather than determining who would get access to these boats via a random lottery, we would decide by country. All the leaders would have to unanimously decide as one group which countries were saved and which ones were doomed

Even as I heard it I thought it was absolutely ludicrous. It was the most morbid way possible the apocalypse could play out. As a reporter, I had no say in it, but every part of me wanted to counter that idea. We were assured that this was the most secure and humane way to acquire people, saying that it would allow only the best of people of people to be allowed into the new world. I thought that statement itself was unbelievable. Nevertheless, we continued.

The debate lasted seventeen grueling hours, and it was quite the bloodbath. All I heard was shouting and the occasional fistfight, and it was grating to no end. In the end, most major countries like China, India, Russia, and most of Europe and the Middle Eastern, along with several countries in northern Africa

Right there in particular was the problem. Most of Africa was completely left out, and I knew that something like this would occur; considering most leaders debated which countries to bring based on the state of each country. 

I decided I wasn’t going to take it. I had plans to record testimonies of various villages and presenting them to the UN in hopes they could change their mind and let more people onto these boats.

Instead, I got kidnapped.

A couple villages off the coast of Botswana had heard from some fleeing tourists of the news.  I told them that none of my family were around anymore and anyone I knew had probably already headed to the bunker, leaving me behind, thus there was no one to demand ransom. I also told them there was no point and that in 5 days it would all be worthless.

"But it won't be soon, and we didn't kidnap you for that purpose." The only one could speak English told me. A bit intrigued, I asked them why did they then capture me.

"We want you to do a favor for us. Almost everyone else in the village has headed north to the boats, but we know they won't get there in time. Me and two dozen other men, women, and children all came up with a different plan. A group of men recently fled and we realized they left giant drills they were using to mind rocks here. Our plan is to drill, drill down as far as possible, go many miles below the surface. We will create our own bunker, and when the blast is gone, we will return to the surface."

The plan was insane, but they told me they were some of the smartest people in the country, and they knew, as they had told me, that they couldn't make it to northern Africa in time to reach the boats. Instead, they had learned how to create a small bunker capable of holding a few people and were planning on implementing it on a much larger scale.

"How long will you plan on staying in this make-shift bunker?" I asked them.

"We don't know. At the very least we will stay in there for about 4 weeks."

"And what do you require me for?"

"Two things, first, you had brought some food for the village. We will bring it to the bunker and ration that food for as long as possible."

Now the man's voice began to falter. He became infinitely more grave. “The second reason we need you is more important. You have a little pad you write things on. You will be here and you will bear witness. They abandoned us without care; they left us to die. Now we will show them that we will continue to survive when they didn’t want us to, and you can tell the whole world about it. If you live, you will be a legend.”

Fuck it, don’t have better things to do.

So now I sit approximately 4.5 miles below the surface. The men have built a small elevator that takes us down the 300 square feet bunker of solid rock. We plan on using a large rock as a sort of manhole cover and to stay inside as long as we can. The impact is approximately 2 days away. We are storing as much food and water as we can into the hole. The day before I was able to head to the nearest city and took as much food and equipment as possible (an easy feat considering almost the entire town was abandoned, excluding a few people who were staying until the end out of hopelessness.) I have no idea whether or not this plan will work. More importantly, I have no Idea what this world will be like after the blast. Will there be hope? Will we fall back into despair? Will this earth ever return to its prosperous state, or will we forever be in ruins, with the ground covered with or failures and our corpses?

I would pray, but now I see that the true gods are those outside the atmosphere.

And they have come to reap.
