Dragon Age development insights and highlights from Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development

Dragon Age: Origins
The continent of Thedas was at one point going to be named Pelledia, a name initially floated by James Ohlen
“Qunari” was a temporary name that ended up unintentionally sticking, much like “Thedas”
Mary Kirby wrote the Landsmeet. To this day, nobody understands how it works, except possibly her. If she’s “really really drunk” she can explain how it works. There’s as many words in it as Sten’s entire conversations put together
Concept art for Thedosian art - as in in-world art - draws heavily on Renaissance-era portraiture, the Art Nouveau movement, religious styles and media like stained glass, and favorite pieces from the golden age of illustrations in the early 20th century
Andrastianism in-world (art-wise) is depicted in wildly different methods depending on who in-world made the art in question. “One religion, 3 different lenses”. There’s the Chantry take, the Orlesian take and the Fereldan take; each with its own different interpretations, different mediums and different stories
The stained glass images were drawn by Nick Thornborrow for DAI, to decorate religious spaces in that game “and beyond”

The book also had other insights into and anecdotes from the development of DAO, but I’ve transcribed them recently as they’re essentially the stories DG has recently been relating on the awesome Summerfall Studios DAO playthrough Twitch streams. (On those streams he provides dev commentary while Liam Esler plays through DA. The ones with DG are currently once every two weeks. Check them out! Here’s a calendar where you can check when the next one is) Instead of repeating myself I’ll just provide the link to the first transcript. From there you can navigate to the subsequent parts. Note these streams are ongoing. At this point I will also point you to a related post which is cliff notes of the Dragon Age chapter in Jason Schreier’s book Blood Sweat and Pixels.
Dragon Age II
DAO had the longest development period in BioWare history. In contrast DA2 had the shortest
Initially DA2 was going to be an expansion to DAO. A few months in EA said “Yeah, expansions like these don’t sell very well, so let’s make it a sequel.” So it suddenly became DA2 and they had to make it even bigger, although they still only had 1.5 years of time in which to do this
Production of DA2 officially lasted only 9 months, and at the time the team was still supporting live content for DAO! They finished development that January after the design team crunched all the way through the holiday period that year. Then it went to cert 9 times
The limited time they had is why the story takes place mostly in and around 1 city, and over 7 years (so it was temporal, rather than over physical distance, because a more expansive world would have taken more irl time to make)
They had no time to review even the main plot. Mike Laidlaw pitched the idea of 3 stories taking place at different points in the PC’s life, tied together by Varric’s recollections of events. DG rolled with this and made 1 presentation on the idea. This presentation was then approved and off they went
As they were writing DG realized that there was going to be no oversight and that everything was going to be a ‘first draft’. “Because nobody had time.” He sat down with the writers and said “Look, here’s the conditions we’re working under. A lot of what we’re putting out is gonna be raw. We’re not going to get the editing we need. We’re not going to get the kind of iteration we need. So I’m going to trust you all to do your best work.”
Looking back, DG has mixed feelings on DA2. “A lot of corners were cut. The public perception was that it was smaller than DAO. That’s a sin on its own.”
Despite this he thinks DA2 has some of the best writing in the series, especially character-wise. The DA2 chars are his favorite
The pace with which production progressed may in some ways have helped. “When we do a lot of revision, we often file away [as in buff off] some of the good writing as well. Somehow DA2′s whirlwind process resulted in some really good writing”
The pace meant chars landed on the writers in various stages of completion. For example Isabela was fairly defined due to appearing in DAO. In contrast Varric at the start was just that single piece of widely-shown concept art
Varric was conceived as a storyteller not a fighter. His skills are talking and bullshitting. Hence the question became, so what does this guy do in combat? The direction was to make him as different as possible to Oghren, so not a warrior. He couldn’t be a dual-wielding rogue in order to differentiate him from Bela. But you can’t really picture this guy with a bow. “For a dwarf, it would probably be a crossbow. We didn’t have crossbows, or we only had crossbows for the darkspawn. And they were part of the models. We didn’t have a separate crossbow that was equip-able by the chars. They had to like, crop one off a darkspawn and remodel it. And that became Bianca” (quote: Mary Kirby)
“Dwarven mages are exceedingly rare.” [???]
If DAO was a classic fantasy painting, DA2 was a screenshot from a Kurosawa film or a northern Renaissance painting. (Here Matt Rhodes was commenting on art style)
John Epler: “In any one of our games, there’s a 95% chance that if you turn the camera away from what it’s looking at, you’ll see all kinds of janky stuff. The moment we know the camera is no longer facing someone, we no longer care what happens to them. We will teleport people around. We will jump people around. We will literally have someone walk off screen and then we will shift them 1000 meters down, because we’re fixing some bug.” John also talked about this camera stuff in a recent charity Twitch stream for Gamers For Groceries. There’s a writeup of that stream here
Designing Kirkwall pushed concept artists to the limits of visual storytelling, because it has a long history that they wanted to be present. It was once the hub of Tevinter’s slave empire, so it needed to look brutal and harsh, but it also then needed to feel reclaimed, evolved, and with elements of contemporary Free Marches culture
The initial plan was for DA titles to be distinguished by subtitles not numbers, so that each experience could stand on its own rather than feel like a sequel or continuation. (My note: New PCs in each entry make sense then when you consider this and other factoids we know like how DA is the story of the world not of any one PC). Later, DA2′s name was made DA2 in a bid to more clearly connect the game to its predecessor. For DAI they returned to the original naming convention. (My note: so I’d reckon they’d be continuing the subtitle naming convention for DA4)
DA2 was initially code-named “Nug Storm”, strictly internally
The Cancelled DA2 Expansion - Exalted March
This was a precursor to DAI
It was meant to bridge the gap between DA2 and DAI
It focused on the fallout from Kirkwall’s explosion, with Cory serving as the villain
Meredith’s red lyrium statue was basically going to infest Kirkwall and it would end up [with what would end up] the red templars taking over Kirkwall and essentially being Cory’s army
To stop him Hawke would have recruited various factions, including Bela’s Felicisima Armada and the Qunari at Estwatch, forcing Hawke to split loyalties and risk relationships in the process
It was meant to bring DA2′s story to an end and end in Varric’s death. DG was very happy with this because all of DA2 is Varric’s tale. The expansion was supposed to start at the moment Cassandra’s interrogation of him ended in the present. “And we finished off the story with Varric having this heroic death.” It tied things up and would have broken many fan hearts, something BioWare writers notoriously enjoy. But between a transition to the new Frostbite engine and the scope of DAI, the decision was made to cancel EM, work any hard-to-lose concepts into DAI, and in the process save Varric’s life. DG has talked about the Varric dying thing before
Concept art for EM explored new areas previously not depicted in the DA universe, with costumes that reflected next steps for familiar chars. Varric was going to war, what would he have worn? With Anders, if he survived DA2, the plan was to present a redeemed Warden
A char that vaguely resembled Sera in DAI was first concepted for EM. This fact was mentioned near this concept art (see the female elf) and this concept art of Bethany with the blond bob
The writers sketched out plans to end it with Hawke having the option to marry their LI. This included alternate ceremonies for party members like Bethany and Sebastian if the player opted not to wed. There was even a wedding dress made for Hawke. This asset made it into DAI (Sera and Cullen’s weddings in Trespasser). The dress can also be seen in DAI during an ambient NPC wedding after completing a chain of war table missions
The destruction of a Chantry was explored in concept art as it might have happened in EM. This idea ended up carrying over to the beginning of DAI. (My note: Lol, the idea that DA2 could have had 2 Chantries being destroyed in it 😆)
World of Thedas
Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby started with “a disgusting little dish called fluffy mackerel pudding”. In the middle of DAO’s busy dev period one of them (they can’t remember who) found a recipe online for this, scanned in from a 70s cookbook. “I don’t understand why it was fluffy. Why would you want fluffy mackerel pudding?” MK says. “We loved it so much we included it in a DAO codex.”
This led them to create more food for Thedas, full recipes included, like a Fereldan turnip and barley stew from MK and SC’s Starkhaven fish and egg pie. The fish pie became Sebastian’s favorite. “To me it made sense for it to be fish pie because a lot of the Free Marches are on the coast”, SC says, “It was something that was popular in medieval times, so I thought, let’s make a fish pie! I looked at medieval recipes and I concocted a fish pie which I fed to my partner, and he was like ‘This is not terrible’”
For WoT the whole studio was asked to contribute family recipes which might have a place in Thedas. SC adapted these to fit in one Thedosian culture or another, including a beloved banana bread that localization producer Melanie Fleming would regularly bake to keep the DA team motivated. “Melanie’s banana bread got us through Inquisition”
DAI
It says part of DAI takes place in or near the border with Nevarra [???]
This game was aimed to be bigger than DA2 and even DAO in every conceivable way
The first hour had to do a lot of heavy lifting, tying together the events of DAO and DA2 while introducing a new PC, new followers etc in the aftermath of the big attack. DG rewrote it 7 times then Lukas Kristjanson did 2 more passes
DG: “Our problem is always that our endings are so important, but we leave them to last, when we have no time. I kept pushing on DAI: ‘Can we work on the ending now? Can we work on the ending now? Can we do it early on?’ Because I knew exactly what it was going to be. But despite the fact that it kept getting scheduled, whenever the schedule started falling behind, it kept getting pushed back... so, of course, it got left til last again.”
“The reveal of the story’s real antagonist, Solas, a follower until the end, when he betrayed the player”. “Solas’ story remains a main thread in Inquisition’s long-awaited follow-up” [these aren’t DG quotes, just bits of general text]
Over the course of development they had 8 full-time writers and 4 editors working on it. Other writers joined later to help wrangle what ended up being close to 1 million words of dialogue and unspoken text. While many teams moved to a more open concept style of work for DAI, the writers remained tucked away in their own room, a choice DG says was necessary, given how much they talked. All the talking had a purpose ofc as if someone hit a bump or wall in their writing they would open the problem up to the room
As writing on a project like DAI progresses, the writers grow punchier and weirder things make it into the game. This is especially the case towards the end of a project (they get tired, burned out)
Banter and codexes require less ‘buy-in’ (DG has talked about this concept a few times on the Twitch streams) from other designers. DG liked to leave banter for last as a reward because it was fun. Banter begins as lists of topics for 2 followers to discuss. These may progress over time or be one off exchanges. One banter script can balloon to well over 10k words. “The banter was always huge because we were always like, laughing, and really at that point, our fields of fucks were rather barren, so we would just do whatever”
The bog unicorn happened pretty much by accident. It was designed by Matt Rhodes and was one of his fav things to design. They needed horse variations and he had already designed an undead variant which was a bog mummy [bog body]. irl these are preserved in a much different way to traditional mummies. When someone dies in a bog their skin turns black and raisin-like. The examples we know of tend to have bright red hair for whatever reason. It’s a very striking look and MR wanted to do a horse version of this as he thought it’d be neat. 5 mins before the review meeting for it he had a big ‘Aha!’ moment, quickly looked up a rusty old Viking sword, and photoshopped it through its skull like that was how it died. “And I was like, ‘I just made a unicorn. Alright, in it goes!’” It got approved. “So we built the thing. It fit. It told a little story”
With the irl Inquisition longsword, one of the objects they tested its cleaving ability on was a plush version of Leliana’s nug Schmooples
The concept art team explored a wide variety of visuals for the Inquisitor’s signature mark. It needed to look powerful and raw but couldn’t look like a horrific wound. In some cases, as cool as the idea looked on paper, they just weren’t technically feasible, especially as they had to be able to fit on any number of different bodies
Bug report: “Endlessly spawning mounts! At one point during development, Inquisitors could summon a new horse every time they whistled, allowing them to amass a near infinite number of eager steeds that faithfully followed them across Thedas. “You could go charging across levels and they’d all gallop behind you,” Jen Cheverie says, “It was beautiful.” Trotting into town became an epic horse siege as a tidal wave of mounts enveloped the streets. Jen called it her Army of Ponies”
The giants came from DA Week, an internal period when devs can pursue different individual creative projects that in some way benefit DA. They also had a board game from one of these that they were going to put in but they didn’t have time. It’s referenced though. It was dwarven chess
Josie’s outfit is made of gold silk and patterned velvet, with leather at her waist. She carries “an ornate ledger” and she has “an ornamented collar sitting around her neck, finished by a brilliant red ruby, like a drop of Antivan wine in a sunbeam”
Iron Bull’s armor is leather. His loose pantaloons and leather boots give him agility to charge
On DAI in particular, concept artists took special care to make sure costumes would be realistic, at least in a practical ‘this obeys the laws of physics and textiles’ sense. “While on Inquisition, we thought about cosplay from a concept art perspective. Given how incredible a lot of [cosplays] are, I now am not worried about them. In fact in some cases in the future I want to throw them curveballs like, ‘All right, you clever bastards. Let’s see if you can do this!’”
2 geese that nested on the office building and had chicks were named Ganders and Arishonk (it wasn’t known who was the mom or the dad). Other possible names were Carver Honke, Bethany Honke, Urdnot Pecks, Quackwall, Cassandra Pentagoose, the Iron Bill, Shepbird, Garroose, Admiral Quackett, Scout Honking, HChick-47 and Darth Malgoose
Bug report: “The surprising adventures of Ser Noodles!” DAI was the first time the series had a mount feature, meaning this had a lot of bugs. A lot of the teams’ favorite bugs were to do with the mounts. There was a period of time where the Inquisitor’s horse seemed to lose all bone and muscle in its legs. They had a week or so where all quadruped legs were broken. It was a bit noticeable in things like nugs and other small beasties but the horse was insanely obvious. “The first time we summoned the horse [for this] and started running around, the entire QA exploration room just exploded with laughter.” Its legs flapped around like cooked fettucine, leading testers to lovingly nickname it Ser Noodles. At galloping speeds the legs almost looked like helicopter blades, especially when footage was set to classic pieces such as Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries
For DAI the artists were asked questions like “What would Morrigan wear to a formal ball? Can Cassandra pull off a jaunty hat?”
On DAI storyboarding became the norm. John Epler: “Cinematic design for the longest time was the Wild West. It was ‘here’s a bunch of content, now do it however you want’, which resulted in some successes and some failures.” Storyboarding gave designers a consistent visual blueprint based on ideas from designers, writers and concept artists
Quote from a storyboard by Nick Thornborrow (the Inquisitor going into the party at the end of basegame sequence): “Until Corypheus revealed himself they could not see the single hand behind the chaos. A magister and a darkspawn combined. The ultimate evil. So evil. Eviler than puppy-killers and egg farts combined.”
A general note on concept art:
In the early stages of any project, before the concept artists are aware of any writing, they like to just draw what they think cool story moments could be. It’s not unusual for the team to then be inspired by these and fold them into the game as the project progresses

Summary: After Frankie makes everyone believe he was killed during a mission, hours later you're still shaken from the reveal that it had been a ruse. You can't stand the idea that he might have never known how you felt about him, so later that evening, you go and check on him.

You sit in your hut at your team's temporary camp in the jungle, fidgeting. You don't know why you’re so torn- there’s nothing weird about checking on a teammate after a stressful mission, and you and your boys had done it for each other countless times before. This time is different, though. This time had shaken you more than any other incident, after you thought Frankie had- No. You exhale.
Just thinking of him emerging after the mission that day, appearing when you thought he was lost, causes another swell of emotion to rise in you, hot tears filling your eyes. You clap your hands over your mouth, force yourself to take deep, steadying breaths. Frankie had looked so surprised at everyone's reaction to his reappearance: stunned, relieved tears and a five-person hug that had pulled everyone to the ground in a tangle, with himself at the center. You don't know what he had expected. His impromptu plan hadn't been ideal, sure, but it had made their mission a success, and he was alive.
You smile a little at the memory. The quiet relief on Frankie's face, how soft and vulnerable he looked surrounded by affection, dust and sweat in his hair. Your smile fades at the remembrance of what had happened next. After everyone had untangled and straightened up, Santiago held out Frankie's hat to him, retrieved from where it had fallen during their dogpile. Frankie had secured it on his head, smiling cautiously at his friend. Then Santiago had punched him in the face.
“Don't you ever do that again!” Santi's voice had cracked. In the split second before he turned and strode away, you caught a glimpse of his eyes, turbulent and red-rimmed with emotion. Frankie, holding his jaw, had stared after him in shock. The Miller boys offered reassurance: “He'll be okay, Catfish. You guys are close. He was just upset.”
“We all were,” you added, stepping closer. Frankie's attention had focused on you for the first time since his return. Apprehension in his eyes, guilt and worry clearly visible on his face. You didn't let yourself think about what those dark eyes did to you as you flung yourself at him, hugging him fiercely. It was only partly to hide your face that you buried it in his neck. Santiago’s outburst echoed your own anger at Frankie’s deception, at him making you believe he was dead- but now was not the time to deal with it.
You had made no effort to stop the tears as you breathed in Frankie's scent, muddled with sweat and gunmetal. His arms wrapped around you carefully, one hand cradling the back of your head. Holding each other the way you were, his voice seemed to rumble through you, low and warm. “Hey, Mos. Thought you were gonna punch me too there for a sec.”
Memories flooded through you at the sensation- all the other times the two of you had been this close. Dancing to sultry music in some club, both of you too tired to pretend to mind lying pressed together in a cramped tent-
You exhaled, shoving the memories aside. Now was also not the time for that particular train of thought or its familiar destination.
Pulling back, you gave him a watery smile. “Nah, I think Pope did enough damage.”
You kissed him lightly on the cheek Santiago had just punched. Frankie's eyes were wide when you looked up at him, but you ignored the fluttering in your chest and turned your soft look into a glare. “But you'll get what's coming to you after that stunt.” His bulletproof vest was hard under your finger as you jabbed it into his chest.
You hardly held up the glare for a minute before it cracked, and Frankie chuckled in relief. “Whatever you say, Mosquito. Let's just get out of here.”
Skirting the edge of your team's small camp, you pause to scan for anyone else moving around in the dark. Briefly you find yourself distracted by the brightness of the full moon above, the beauty of the starry sky this far from any major towns. The remote location of this mission was why you were all still in camp tonight, instead of blowing off steam at some local watering hole. Usually some booze was brought along anyway, so you could unwind around the campfire, but you suppose things are a bit tense for that after today. Secretly, you're glad. You don't want to have to compete with everyone else for Frankie's attention tonight.
Now, you blink rapidly to clear the tears from your eyes. Taking a final deep breath, you stand. You had done enough crying since then; it was time for a different kind of release.
Mosquito. Sneaking around in the night like this, you're reminded of your nickname's origins. After a particularly successful mission, Santiago had been raving over your skills of infiltration. “...hitting 'em before they even knew they were there! Bam!” Crowing with laughter, their victory relaxing him as much as the booze.
“Like a mosquito,” Frankie had murmured, just barely peeking out from under the brim of his cap. The bugs had been particularly bad in that region, but the look in Frankie's eyes was anything but. Gleaming with admiration in the dim bar light, a knowing amusement quirking his mouth into a smile-  because Santiago's jaw had dropped. “Mosquito! Yes! ‘Fish, you're a genius!” Before Frankie could stop him, his friend had stolen his hat, ruffled his hair, and planted a kiss on his head with a smack.
You laughed as Frankie snatched his cap back. Santiago lifted his beer and spoke ceremoniously. “From this moment on, you will be known as: Mosquito.”
“Here, here,” Benny and Will had enthused, holding up their own bottles.
You shook your head, but there was no arguing with it. You clinked the neck of your beer with Pope's. “Mosquito it is.” The conversation drifted then, but you had looked at Frankie meaningfully. You lifted your bottle almost imperceptibly in acknowledgment. You're still not sure if the blush on his cheeks was from your appreciation, or Santi's smooch.
A buzzing near your ear reminds you that there are also bugs in your current environment, and that you've been standing here long enough. Certain there is no one around to see, you slip around the side of Frankie's hut to where a camo-patterned blanket hangs as a door. You knock lightly on the wood beside it. “Catfish? It's me,” you call softly. “Can I come in?”
There's a rustle and the sound of a throat clearing. “Yeah.”
You push aside the blanket just enough to step beyond it. It falls back into place behind you with a swish, and you blink as your eyes adjust. Contrary to the cool moonlight falling outside, the hut is lit only by a lantern sitting on the nightstand. In the dim, warm orangish glow, the figure perched on the edge of the bed is a study of shadows. You catch your breath as Frankie lifts his head.
Frankie “Catfish” Morales epitomizes the phrase “it's always the quiet ones”. But what he doesn't say out loud, you can always read in his eyes. Endlessly expressive, occasionally accompanied by an eyebrow raised to varying heights, they never fail to draw you in.
“Hey, ‘Squito. Come to take your shot?”
Your brow furrows. That wasn't what you expected. The guys only called you ‘squito' or ‘skeeter’ when they wanted to needle you. Buying time, you cast your eyes around the small space. A few square feet at the foot of the bed where Frankie had dumped some gear; the single bed that Frankie sits on, three feet in front of you; and the nightstand at the head of the bed, a surprisingly homey feature. On it sits the lantern, Frankie's dog tags, and- ah- a tall bottle filled with golden liquid.
“Only if that's tequila I see,” you reply.
Frankie looks caught off-guard for a beat. Then a huff of laughter escapes him. “Make yourself at home.”
So saying, he pushes himself backwards on the bed, loosely crossing his legs in front him and resting his head against the wall. His eyes drift shut.
You snatch the bottle up with one hand and use the other to maneuver onto the bed next to him, mirroring his position. Consciously, you make sure your knees touch. Despite your earlier anger and whatever Frankie seemed to be thinking now, you want him to know you're here for him. His leg hair prickles against your skin, pleasant and familiar and warm.
"How many have you had?"
"Just two."
“Easy catch-up, then.” You remove the shot glass resting upside down on top of the bottle, fill it up, and knock it back. You can't help but shudder as it goes down, warmth settling in your belly.
You turn your head to find Frankie's eyes open and fixed on you. You swallow reflexively at how close your faces suddenly are, how depthless his eyes look in the lamplight.
“How's the tequila?”
You blink, barely registering his words.
He nods down to the bottle resting on your knee. “It's a new kind.” His low, raspy voice, normally comforting, now feels like it's sliding along your bones, setting them alight and turning them to liquid all at once.
You blink several more times and resist the urge to clear your throat. You glance down at the bottle. The label looks vaguely familiar, but not as much as it would if it were a brand he or Santi normally bought. And you would know; you've drank with them both countless times, enough to know their preferences.
“It's good,” you say. You offer it back to him.
He takes it, moving at a leisurely pace as he unscrews the cap. You watch the deftness of his hands, your gaze traveling up his arms- perhaps not as defined as Santiago's or Benny's, but just as capable of holding you tight. The lantern's glow gleams on his brown skin, the line of his throat as he tips his head back.
Your gaze catches on the strands of hair that drift along his brow. Usually they're tucked beneath his cap, even after-hours- an easy target for teasing amongst the guys. But tonight they're free, and you wonder at how soft they look. If Frankie would let you touch them, the tiny curls at his temple.
One eyebrow raises into your line of sight, interrupting your train of thought, and you realize he's caught you staring. Flushing, you wordlessly take the bottle back from him and sling another shot, before setting it down on the bed next to you.
After a beat of hesitation, you lean your head on his shoulder. “What's wrong, Catfish?”
You can feel him struggling to decide what to say. “Benny and Will caught me by the campfire. Scolded me for pulling such an idiotic stunt. You know the drill.”
“But then they slapped you on the back for it working out so well, right?” That's how their “scoldings” usually went.
“Yeah. Just not until after a solid helping of guilt. And I still haven't spoken to Santiago.”
You sigh. How could he not understand? You reach out and take his right hand in your left, entwining your fingers and pulling them toward you. Both of you happen to be wearing old, standard-issue PT shorts as pajamas; short enough for Frankie's hand to be resting on bare skin where you hold it against your leg.

GX Finalized-Subs!52 (Revisited): Gotta Replace Your Cards... Right?
So I just re-finalized my episode 52 subs because CamsterdamSPguy on YouTube tipped me off to missing this error in my last pass-through.  After Ryou’s Treasure from a Different Dimension makes them draw, Judai originally draws Fusion Undone/De-Fusion with Miracle Fusion, but 1) he used it a turn before, and 2) on his next turn, in a move that exhausts his hand, it’s Fusion Recovery that he uses. 
The shots from the Japanese version above are from my fix of the error, where I made a Fusion Recovery proxy and applied it in AfterEffects, masking back the original card’s black border around it to blend it in and Judai’s thumb above it.  The dub, meanwhile, misses this and dubifies De-Fusion, but... they do so a bit too awkwardly that I’m surprised it hasn’t been touched up at all with how this episode’s been re-released now multiple times lol (TV airing, original DVD release, Cinedigm DVD, now Crunchyroll upload, by my count [and probably missing some]).
So, the four shots from the Japanese version here are over four movement frames, meaning that they’re held for about 2-3 frames each.  In the dub, so much happens in these 2-3 in-between frames that I had to screenshot it.  From the top:
First, notice how the dubified De-Fusion card drifts away, showing the original card underneath it near the bottom.
Then, there’s the mask on Judai’s thumb now drifting away instead, revealing the Japanese card next to it while his thumb’s a bit erased.
Next is a slower repeat of #2.
Finally, it’s the last frame that’s held for the rest of the scene, though the outline on his thumb throughout loses detail.
From editing these so often now, I can tell it’s an issue with keyframing--when you’re editing Masks like on Judai’s thumb, you want to use keyframes to hold it in position for as long as things stay in that position--often means using a keyframe at the beginning of that position’s video frame and the frame just before the position changes.  What a program like AfterEffects will try to do is move everything within the span of those keyframes from that initial position to the new keyframed position; the idea is that by keyframing the beginning and just before movement, it “moves” to the same position it’s in.  So, if that frame pre-movement isn’t keyframed and you go on to edit the position after the position changes, then... you get the Judai thumb mask drifting, lol. 
Same applies to the position keyframing applied to the card itself and why it drifts initially there. (And keyframes can also be used to make effects like brightness fade or brighten as needed.)
Just happened to turn on the dub to see if they fixed this or not, and when I noticed a little bugging-out on Judai’s hand, I figured there was a goof. 😅 I’m sure part of it could be attributed to not being given enough time to work on the edit, but... it’s been re-released multiple times, lol.
(Also, seems they wouldn’t get the direct layers to edit the cards in until about maybe ZeXal or definitely ARC-V [haven’t seen much of the ZeXal dub, but at least in ARC-V the cards do seem edited much smoother, with the outlines and things the originals had--though actually, maybe even by late 5D’s since the cards in BBT are generally edited much nicer than most of 5D’s proper], so credit where it’s due for having to make do until then, ‘cause even the handful of these I do every few episodes can be a challenge to make happen sometimes, lol)

A Small Update
Mostly just checking in! Not ready to give an elaborate update on CH5 yet, but I can give you a sort of sneak peak, as well as some other things I’d like to update you guys on!
Concerning the current version of the game:
Spent time fixing bugs, such as variables for character names not working properly and listing them as “Unnamed” instead, or character trait options being assigned the wrong amount of points.
Fine-tuning: caught a few stray spelling/grammar errors, added future codex entries in advance, added future graphics in advance.
Clicking multiple codex entries in a row should no longer require you to back out through all of them; the main menu passages now will each send you back into the story upon clicking the [[Return]] button.
Concerning Chapter Five thus far:
I’ve outlined structure of the chapter, as well as the rest of the chapters in ACT I. A few small details and decisions made in the previous four chapters might have an impact depending on whose route you’re following, but there’s nothing major planned... for Chapter Five at least!
Finished the starting scenes for each LI; it ended up branching quite a bit longer than I initially planned, but I doubt anyone will be complaining about that haha.
Added and planned several platonic relationship stats. Yay, friendship!
But now the major thing I really wanted to get to with this update!
I’ve commissioned @artbygaia for Rozerîn’s drawing and am super excited about the progress made for it so far, which would’ve been good news on its own. However, as soon as the commission is done, I’d also like to announce that I’ll be releasing the game on Itch.io! Future chapters will be released there as well; I’m thankfully retiring the Google Drive/Dropbox file hosting haha.
Originally I really wanted to get at least Chapter Five finished before even considering doing so since I’ve never released a game before and it made me a little nervous, but as the current method of hosting the game files is awkward or entirely non-functional for some of you, it pushed my schedule forward by quite a bit. I already have the game page designed and ready to go, so it shouldn’t take much longer.
As a final note, I’d like to welcome all the new followers and players to the blog! I’ve seen quite a surge after I posted the promo, which makes me very excited. A few months ago I hardly would’ve imagined there to be so much interest for the game. I’m very glad to have you all along for the ride!
So, that was about all I had to announce for now. I’ll update you with the official chapter progress for Chapter Five once I’m at least halfway through, so... in about two weeks, hopefully, if my university workload doesn’t kick my ass.

resources that i use for my userboxes and other things that are free (with links lol) and applicable examples:

Userbox Maker: Since we’re talking about userboxes, this one is indeed a no-brainer. The interface is easy and simple: You type the message, you change the colors, and then voila. The site doesn’t have images to add to the userbox ID square, thats up to you to put something there later.
What does it offer me?/Pros:
well, it offers you a way to make really easy userboxes with a color scheme (some are premade, others you can choose the colors) and resizeable text.
Cons:
The whole ‘Use this code in the English Wikipedia’ to get the box is LOST on me completely. im savvy but im not that savvy! What i normally do is enlarge and cut it, make the background transparent, then make the edit from there for what I need. Is that illegal? Who knows.
The colors of the premade color schemes are very dull and kinda washed out/ muted. You can change the color scheme of you box manually in the hex boxes, but even then they’re not as bright as you would hope. But hey, its free, what can you do? Here’s the color hex site that I use: X and here’s a pixel art maker bc I know the kids love that: P

LunaPic: Allows you to make transparents, flags, and other little photo edits like crop and filters. Con is that you have to have the thing you want to edit saved on your computer already, thus if you wanna do a quick edit of something in your clipboard you have to save it first aka, a hassle if you’re trying to meme
What does it offer me?/Pros:
See all those tabs right there? each one has a bunch of effects and things that go with them, so you’re bound to find something useful on the site no matter what you’re looking for, complete with sliders for easy adjustments.  There’s color tinting, watermarking, transparency, pixelations, and the list goes on. You can also draw but its no PTS if you catch my drift.
There’s a editing history at the bottom of the page for you to see what you’ve done to your image. The site automatically carries your image over to the next tool you click on (if the tool is applicable to it, such as Draw from Color Tint). This is also a con if you accidentally edit your picture to something else entirely, but the history allows you to jump back an edit.
No flash needed for a lot of them!
Cons:
 The site it massive in your browser, and because of the automatic drop down when you hover, you end up getting this overlap over the category and may end up clicking what you didn’t mean to. Easy fix is zooming out to about 80% to combat the overlaps. Because of this, if you’re going to use your phone, do it in landscape mode. wont be the best experience but it gets shit done. 
site has ads but not pervasive ones. if you really dont like them, use an adblock.
For flag editing, the colors are a little rough, and require pretty damn good memory of what the right colors you want are called if you want a richer or more specific look. there is a color wheel though, which i believe is new.

Bloggif: another photo editing site, but its hella retro  kinda. I believe the site is originally french so hey. lets you make old internet type gifs and icons, complete with glitter effects,fx effects, and even little smileys to add to your stuff.
What does it offer me/Pros:
Truth be told: not very much! There are only 20 editing tools on the site to use at your leisure, a significant downgrade from LunaPic’s 200+, but what it lacks in editing it makes up for the lovely retro feel it has. There is gif support, including deconstructing gifs if that’s your flavor, and the infamous glitter tools kids love these days! 
some of the tools actually have lots of options with them, for example, the ‘Animated smiley’ tool, which offers 16 smiley shapes, numerous little add ons, and the ability to upload your own image to edit into this ‘smiley’. There are options at the bottom for the blink speed (Rapide, Moyen, Lent, Aucun which in layman translation is Fast, Slow, Slower, Stopped). 
can support small images and larger images, but i wouldn’t recommend trying to over power the site. Here’s an example of the smiley tool in effect:

It’s fast! And really easy. You can do it from your phone as well!There are photo collages, animated text with effects on the letters and a few other things. 
Flash not needed for all of them!
Cons:
‘Swiss army knife of photo editing’ is a bit of a stretch since there are so few tools.
For smilies, there is no free placement of the little effects. They pick a spot and stay there. To layer, you have to reupload the smiley and  drop another effect. 
Just not a lot to offer, tbh...but retro! and cute!

Blingee: ye olde blingee.com, lets you make blingees for that really early 2000s feel. TRES IMPORTANTE: to make blingees you need to set up an account (its free). You also need to use firefox (if DDG works im not sure i havent used it with that browser) and update your flash to actually make them after setting up an account. IDKY but it does not work with chrome whether you fixed your flash or not. the site gives you options to share your blingees as well, and you can also see shit from like ...2006 sksk
What does it offer me?
The ability to make blingees. What more can you want? If you’ve been online and a little tech savvy for a lot of your childhood, you may even have a blingee account still. the site is still active hasn’t updated its look for a WHILE, but it’s a pleasing site to look at.
Variety is of the essence here, as there are more than just blingees to create. There are internet postcards and stamps as well, with lots of little effects to add like sparkles and glitter and backgrounds of your problematic kins.

Cons:
G-D FORBID YOU LOSE YOUR PASSWORD!! I believe there is a bug right now that won’t let you sign up, even though the FAQ claims that you don’t need an account to make blingees (you very much do!!). I have emailed about the process of logging in after you reset your password and if there is a wait period until you can log in again, and I’m still waiting for a response. I also told them about the signing up part. I’ll update later...
You need flash. Flash is leaving soon :(
Pretty damn confusing to use actually. So much so you wonder if it’s worth the trouble...

Glitterfly: it’s glitter. its a lot of glitter. Theres 50 cent glitter images on this site. It’s legit.
What does it offer me?/Pros:
Glitter. And lots of things to put glitter on. And i mean A LOT!
Allows you to upload a picture to throw glitter on.

Make glitter words, change their color, and roll that sucker in some sparkles!

— axel was born and raised in brooklyn, new york, and he was claimed at thirteen, on his thirteenth birthday, by hypnos. — the day he was claimed, axel ceased contact with his human mother and his step-dad, and he attended a camp for half-bloods that wasn’t far from home. he spent his adolescence there year round for safety from monsters at home and abroad, then moved on to eonia.  — ( parental abuse tw, drowning tw begin ) i don’t want to be too graphic here so i’m going to plainly say that axel’s mother was a very, very bad person, and the man she married was absent at his best, physically abusive at worst. axel’s powers (  hypnokinesis, namely )  were potent and difficult to control at a young age, and as a deeply religious catholic woman, this scared his mother and influenced most of the animosity in their relationship. she was convinced that the defensive visions he created and his ability to put her to sleep ( an attempt to help her, on his end; insomnia plagued her and later, it would him, too ) were of demonic origin, and tried to drown him more than once; cleansing, she claimed. the worst instance was the day he was claimed, actually — new years day, 2012; his life was saved by hypnos, and that was the last he saw of her.   ( parental abuse tw, drowning tw end. )  —  that said, he’s a little ( very ) hydrophobic. poseidon kids do NOT fucking interact ( i’m kidding. kind of. he Will avoid a little though ) —  anyway! moving on. all of this aside, axel did his best to put his past behind him, and he was actually super stoked to learn that his powers came from somewhere good and that there was places out there for kids like him; to learn he wasn’t any kind of monster. ( still working on believing that, though.. marcelines monster.mp3 right here )  — he’s less stoked when he starts having trouble falling asleep, and really, it feels like a more cruel twist than any other fate has thrown at him ( his upbringing was chock full of mean twists, so that’s saying something ); and really, it’s more like insomnia just full on kicks in, but he can put other people to sleep. great, right? whatever, though — combat classes are kickass and he’s surrounded by babes that think he’s hilarious so things could be totally, way worse.  — ( bullying tw (brief) ) for the most part, axel was pretty well liked among his peers. he was bullied as a young kid (pre-claim), but he bit back and he bit back hard, and sure, some of that followed him into his teen years but he’s more confident by then; less fun to poke at, and absolutely unhinged when provoked, so people learn better of it. the only real lasting effect was one instant that hit him a little too deep in the inferiority, when he was seventeen — he fell in love with a girl, told her that, and found himself at the end of a very mean spirited prank. he shook it off like he did anything else, or at least — he told himself he did, even if the hurt hit him somewhere a little too deep rooted ( ie. being god’s most unlovable son would naturally land him here, right? ) love’s kinda stupid anyways, so what the hell, right?  (bullying tw end.)
— ( alcoholism tw, drug use tw begin ) this is already obscenely long so i’m just going to keep it to the point here and say he began drinking when he was sneaking booze in to camp at fifteen, and it just never stopped there. he’s also a massive stoner, which is all well, harmless and good for the most part; he’s always grinning, half-lidded, and has a room full of smoke at any given time. it’s the pills that do him in, and he did them at first just so he could get some shut eye, and... well. after that, because he’s dependent on them. but he keeps this part under wraps for the most part; it doesn’t have to be anyone’s problem but his, and it’s not a problem until it is one. partying’s fun, so is coke; so is taking a few too many xan’s, mdma.   ( alcoholism tw, drug use tw end )

HDBHFDSJ. anyways he’s a good brother even if he is absolutely so reckless and terrifying in regards to himself but his siblings. his siblings he will do anything for. ALSO!!! FOUND FAMILY!!!! it would be kinda nice if he bonded with someone a little older maybe, could be outside of the hypnos house even, someone he’s kind of a bratty-little-brother type with.... or bratty older brother that takes your things and makes you laugh, y’know. 
PERSONALITY.  just tacking this part of the app on at the end too to highlight parts that i think are important for understanding who he is, and just so it’s all in one place!
toothy grins, half-lidded eyes, and keepin’ them laughing is what it’s all about, baby. axel walks with more confidence in his posture than he’s earned ( or claimed, for that matter ), and it’s the backbone of what gets him by. he’s a glowing example of the fake it ‘til you make it mentality, and he knows what he wants, usually how to get it, and doesn’t mind letting you know that. there’s an ever present mischievous glint in his eyes that says more about what to expect from him than he does, and that’s still not much? he likes to have fun, and there isn’t a whole lot of regard for righteousness or responsibility on his end, but hey! it’s usually only ever at his own expense, so what’s the damage? he’s an absolute clown and he knows it.
axel loves people. he does — you might not guess that with how elusive he is, but it’s true. there’s nothing he likes more than a good conversation with someone interesting, or maybe not even then; if there’s a sparkle in you, he’ll see it. ( might even draw it, not that you’d ever know. ) he’s warm, loyal, compassionate, relaxed, and understanding; and none of that is at the cost of being passive, or lacking passion. 
as long as the vibes are right, he’s happy to just be; though, he’s known to have a fuse for certain provocations, and will jump readily at chance to fight in someone else’s honor. also, it’s not unlike him to spar for the sake of sparring; but that’s all in good fun, no worries.
there’s no way to sugarcoat it — axel has an inferiority complex. where that stems from is something he’s more self-aware of than he’s willing to admit, but he doesn’t have the patience or the will to dissect it; much less do anything about it, and he’s as bull-headed as they come — especially regarding anything related to the psyche. how much this impacts his demeanor and relationships with others varies on the situation, but one constant is that he’s going to retreat before things get bad; even if ‘things are getting bad’ exists only as his own paranoia-born hypothetical.
things can’t go bad if you don’t let them, and he’s content to keep it that way; even if it means being stuck in the stasis of missed opportunities. it’s when he’s retreating into himself that he can get irritable, anxious, jumpy; secretive, defensive, even. he’s personable until he isn’t, essentially.

[i figured i can answer this while drawing todays daily and an interaction, so- sure, okay! im probably gonna ramble a bit cos i LOVE talkin about my ocs so im puttin it under a cut, but if youd like to see one of them, please feel free to send an ask and i can post a ref image for them!!! while im always anxious to show off my ocs, when im sure people wont, like, judge me, im always excited to show them off :>]
okok so i have aboutt,,,, 4 hollow knight ocs? five if you include one thats in development-
in order of creation we have,, ram, ilea, bea, and thalia. the fifth is obviously most recent but doesnt have a name yet hjdbhjdb
ram was my first oc!! theyre a vessel with, well,kinda ram-like horns? but more like. square ish? idk its kinda hard to explain without outright showing you. theyre older than ghost, around the same age as broken vessel. quickly abandoned as a failure because they had very clearly loved the pale king and white lady as parents, so they were tossed back down, however managed to survive as they had grabbed onto a ledge halfway down the fall into the abyss. of course, they hit something before they saved themselves, so theyre cracked a bit on their horns and head, but it doesnt bother them.
basically they escape into kingdoms edge, and at that point is desperately trying to survive because they want to grow up and prove to the pale king that they are worthy to live. it. doesnt happen? lol they died :’> but because of where they died, infection got to them, and is basically forcing them to stay alive. they highkey wanna die at this point but hey at least its not noticable, if only for the orange eyes which can be fixed via bandana.
they wear a custom charm that i made up tbh. originally it was gonna be thorns of agony but then i was like “hey wait they wouldnt know where that is” so i just made one up. it formed inside of them kinda? like in their head and they noticed because jkdbcjdbhj rattlerattle. it formed from their feelings of love and betrayal and when worn grants them something similar to adrenaline, which makes them “immune” to pain for a short time when in battle, and kinda like fury of the fallen, grants them a shit ton of strength when low on health. however, its usually only a 20% chance of the first bit happening.
i love ram so much but i made their cracks so over-the-top that i cant fuckin draw them properly dhcbdhjvbdfjh i never make things easy on myself.
ilea is next! youve already seen them. theyre basically my sona!! i had a lot of fun figuring out what to do with them (a friend said im like a grasshopper so i went with that dhjbdhjbdh) and so much fun desiging them (cant remember WHAT grasshopper i based them off of) they dont really have much backstory aside from the fact they pulled a quirrel and remember jack shit lmao. they fight with a bent and sharpened paperclip.
next is bea. bea is a. um. a hummingbird. they are a hummingbird that lives in a hidden area in greenpath and grows a protien-rich fruit that is a substitue for bugs. because they dont want to eat bugs. HOWEVER, if an infected bug comes around them, because the infection cant effect them, they just monch on the infected bugs. theyre teeny but to the bugs is HUGE. like. radi size or bigger. they have a pink ribbon around their neck, as they used to be a pet but escaped and never bothered taking it off.
lastly is thalia! thalia is a butterfly (based off of the zeltus) that had been raised in a society of moths, after having been invited from a young age to join them. seer had raised her. thalia, since learing of the radicance/light, has become extremely attached, creating small sculptures of figures that are radiance-like, paintings that show the light or radi, or just  scenery. sometimes has carvings. she has a room hidden in the city of tears, and also has four arms lol. if ghost finds her and beats her in battle, she deems them worthy of the light, and after sitting on a bench (not the one inside of her room, which ill describe later) and coming back, a small painting of ghost can be seen on the windowsil.
her room is large, with a very big window in the background. ghosts painting can be seen on the windowsil in the corner, leaning against the window. there are sculptures in the foreground reminiscent of the radiance, there are beautiful paintings on the walls and on easils that are scenery of places shes visited (greenpath, dirtmouth, resting grounds, and a few other places) along with things that are basically light symbolism. a few easils have cloth draped over them, and she stays at the far right of the room, painting what looks like the radiance. again. she usually gives up her best paintings and sculptues as offerings, in an attempt to reach the radiance. there is a bench right in front of and in the middle of the windowsil. it has paintbottles and a fabric draped over it. if ghost rests on it, their cloak gets stained a random color at the bottom until they chill in a bath or die. 
game-speaking, if the dream no more ending is reached, and ghost/the player comes back to her room, thalia is sitting against the wall near the bench and has her legs pulled up to her chest. two of her arms are wrapped around her legs while a third is over her knees, hiding her face, and the other is weakly resting a hand on her head. if spoken to, she looks up and talks about how she feels an absance of presence now, as if something has happened and someone was gone. if spoken to again, she notes how her offerings no longer disappear like they used to, and after a pause, she asks ghost if something happened to the radiance before breaking down and being unable to be spoken to. leaving, resting on a bench, and coming back shows thalia standing and looking around her room, and cant be spoken to, however if dreamnailed she doesnt notice ghost, instead thinking of how much she took the light for granted, and how she wishes she could speak to it and apologize. what shed apologize for, she doesnt know, but she just wants to.
my final oc is in development, but theyre based around a giant centipede (cant remember the name but theyre venomous i think? orange with some blue.) but not much of them has been thought of yet.

i’m bad at coming up with questions so i’m not going to do the 10 questions. but i am going to answer the questions that were listed. also this is an open tag, so anyone who wants to do it can do it.

1) We always talk about favorites. What’s your least favorite book?
hmmm. one book i’ve always hated is the scarlett letter. we read it in school and it was awful.
2) Do you have a favorite place to write? What’s it like there?
i didn’t really have a favorite place to write until recently. a few months ago i finally got a desk and i’ve been in love with it ever since. 
very, very cluttered. there’s all kinds of stuff piled on it. on one side i’ve got soda cans, plastic bottles, my phone; the other side is junk food, my glasses case, a couple of necklaces. i have an old sugar plum fairie barbie on the top shelf that i tried to sell, that nobody wanted even though i had it for like $5 (i might post a picture of it later bc it’s super pretty).
3) Do you have any artistic endeavors other than writing? If not, what else would you most like to learn to do?
back before the writing bug really bit me, i used to draw all the time. now i barely ever draw unless i get really inspired. 
hmmm, i don’t know. maybe sign up for duolingo and learn other languages?? other than that i don’t know.
4) What’s your favorite holiday? Why? Have you ever written a story involving that holiday?
halloween is my favorite, followed closely by christmas just bc i love the tacky decorations and the music and the movies and pretty much everything about it. 
looool i have tried to write fics involving these holidays, but they never come out how i want them to and i’ve kind of given up on it. 
5) How do you fight writer’s block?
silly answer: drink so much caffeine i ascend to the astral plane to get advice from the writing gods.
actual answer: there’s not really an easy way to answer this. sometimes i see writing posts that are like, “you have to write every day!!” and i’m thinking y’know that’s not always possible. whether i’m out of inspiration/ideas, or i’m in a depression spiral, or i’m tired from work, or maybe i’m just not feeling that particular project. it’s not a sin to need a break from your wips, bc even though it’s happy work it’s still work. and there’s no shame in needing to take a breather to get yourself sorted out. 
on days when i’m ready to write, i do different things to get myself pumped up for my wips. i’ll make playlists, make aesthetic boards, sometimes i torture my mutuals with rambles about my ocs or tag them with little excerpts from the project. i really like making an aesthetic tag so i can go and look at all the pretty stuff that makes me think of the wip, so i can remind myself why i want to write it in the first place.
6) At what point in a WIP do you decide to send it to your first beta readers/reviewers?
probably not until i’m at least done with a second draft. the first draft needs to have all those plot holes filled, all those loose threads woven back together, characters need developing. showing a beta reader my first draft would be like taking a person to a room filled with beginning sketches of people where they’re still just shapes instead of having any defining features. 
7) What’s your greatest inspiration?
i don’t think i have one lol.
8) A lot of writers have certain things they like to describe - food, clothes, fights, party scenes. What’s your favorite thing to describe?
emotional scenes where characters talk about their problems and they hug and maybe even cry. i’m a terrible person.
9) What’s your approximate ratio of reading to writing? How do you find time for both? Do you do both on the same day, or split it up?
you’re going to judge me for this, but i haven’t been reading actual books lol. the last few months i’ve just been reading fanfic oneshots with like the occasional multichapter fic thrown in. my attention span has been terrible.
10) What books would you recommend to someone to get them into reading?
i think it depends on the person. what i might find compelling, someone else might find super boring.

1. What is your favorite book in a genre that you don’t tend to write? If you do fantasy/sci-fi, what’s your favorite romance? If you write literary, what’s your favorite paranormal YA?
i don’t really like writing stuff that doesn’t have some kind of paranormal element. so i guess i’d say my writing enemy that i like reading is real world drama. 
my favorite books that are like idk period pieces i guess?? are Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice. 
as for stuff that’s based in more recent times, there’s a ya series i really like called tiny pretty things that’s about a group of ballerinas competing against each other for spots for prima ballerina?? and there’s a lot of drama and backstabbing. it’s kind of a dark series. 
2. What book would you love to see turned into a movie or tv show? Any particular reasons why?
i can’t think of anything right now. maybe green angel by alice hoffman?
3. Have you ever written a character with a certain real-life person in mind. Was it someone you know in real life or someone famous?
some of my ocs were originally based off acquaintances, but as i kept writing them the characters changed so much that they became pretty much unrecognizable. 
4. If your latest WIP had a color scheme, what would it be?
paper heart would be red, orange, pink, and purple. the colors of a sunset with the threat of darkness falling over everything. 
5. What do you eat or drink while writing (if anything)?
s’mores poptarts if i’m too lazy to get up and fix myself something. chips. different sodas: cherry coke, sunkist, grape fanta. 
6. What do you do to restore your inspiration when you’re not writing?
watch movies/tv shows. listen to podcasts or music. look at cool pictures. 
7. Coffee, Tea, Booze, or ALL THREE?
coffee and booze. i’m not a big fan of tea.

uhhhh, does studio ghibli count? their artwork is so appealing to look at.

i’m trying to think of what paper heart would be, but i’m drawing a blank. this needs to be its own game where someone else guesses what movies your wip is the lovechild of.

cheering on and also being cheered on during the writing process. getting to read all these wonderful stories written by wonderful people. knowing other people are suffering just as much as i am lol.

i am terrible at collaborating with other people lol. 
4. Do you prefer reading/writing standalones or series? 
i love reading series, but i’m not good at writing them lol. yet somehow i always end up writing series.

canon: for the next three days verse it’s between leana/yvonne and jason/bella for otp status. my ot5 is carter/matteo/violet/tiffany/nina.

i wish i could answer this question with the dedication it deserves. i feel like their blogs would have a lot of memes and shitposts with some aesthetic stuff thrown in. 
7. If you could write an adaptation of any story, which would it be?   
while i have zero desire to write an adaptation for a story, i’ve always liked the idea of a movie version of Green Angel by Alice Hoffman. mostly bc it’s surreal, a little weird, post apocalyptic, and it would just look really cool.
8. What common writing tips never work for you? And/or what uncommon advice do you swear by? 
anything that’s like, “if you don’t write everyday, you’re not a real writer!!” like chill dude. just bc i’m not cranking out 1,000 words a day like some lean, mean, writing machine doesn’t mean i’m not dedicated to what i’m doing. 
9. Do you research before, during, or after writing sessions? 
it depends. sometimes i get to a point in a fic where i’m like, “uh oh” and i go into a research spiral trying to find this one specific thing. thinking ah yes, this is the specific thing i need at this very moment that i probably could do without.
10. Have you had a writing epiphany that totally revamped your WIP?
if only. there were a few game changers in the next three days series that changed things for the better:
- the way carter and matteo first met lmao. 
- violet’s existence. 
- sage rescuing and then leaving violet and carter. 
- carter and nina’s bromance. 
- alec and carter, and also joe and matteo being siblings.
- tiffany seeing ghosts.

people of the realm: some roomates
Though originally i only had the demon who used magic to form a bunch of arms and etc.,  when thinking about his living situation, a roommate naturally occurred as well, since I guess it seemed natural, the typical trope of 'every stressed out uptight hermit must by law have another character they're forced to interact with that is the complete opposite of them' lol .
 Kaiel is a lazy goth elf art school student (mostly focused on painting) that owns like 500 hats and likes to play her really loud music while she paints, or just does anything in general (ALWAYS music.. one of those people who is like.. never NOT listening to music, she's always got a radio out or headphones in or something). She leaves junk food wrappers and craft supplies and clothes everywhere, and despite being pretty active and energetic, mostly likes to sit around the house and play games, or invite friends over,,, mostly to still just play games with them. The only thing that rivals her music collection is her games, game devices, game merch, etc. She has a bunch of small pets like mice and snakes and, most frighteningly for her roommate, lots of spiders and other bugs. Kaiel is pretty social but still stays at home a lot, she just prefers to invite people over rather than go out places.
 She’s just naturally a pretty loud and excitable person, and can be a bit sloppy and careless and more relaxed about everything (like messes around the house and deadlines and stuff don't really get to her, if she spills something she'll leave it and decide she can clean it up later, etc. Which she does ACTUALLY do, like, she gets her school projects turned in on time, pays rent, does her part of the house chores, etc. It's just she... often waits until the very last minute and is never urgent about getting things done, she's just.. very mellow and chill about things all the time) , which is fine for most situations, but with Virin being the exact opposite they can,, clash a lot.   
She doesn’t have any ill feelings towards him though, aside from sometimes being a bit jealous since he’s vaguely famous in certain music scenes and she thinks being famous would be cool, since people could bring her free food, and she always wonders why he doesn’t take advantage of fans and ask them to make free food for him (she's regularly like "HEY, you have fans right??? You think any of them would bring us free snacks? Some dinner? Do you have any of their phone numbers you could call on like, right now? Wouldn't that be so cool? I'm sure you could get in touch with someone!! Pleaseeee?!!?!!") . Sometimes she likes to mess with him, because she sees him as so emotionally unstable, she'll like, do something small like nail a shoe to the outside of his door , or re-arrange his food in the fridge to watch him freak out just because she's so baffled by the fact that he could be affected my something which she perceives as so trivial, but this has backfired in the past since like.. she does have.. basic empathy,.. and when it goes from 'oh hee heee he's annoyed for 2 minutes or so' to like, 'he seems to be having a legitimate breakdown over this and has been crying for 15 minutes' she starts to feel extremely guilty about her 'pranks'.  
Virin is a demon/jhevona who has the rare ability  to use magic to form functioning external arms (which if you’re not naturally inclined would be hard to do given how much energy it would take usually and would drain your magic pretty quickly), which he mostly utilizes by using them to play ridiculously elaborate songs that are only possible for someone with way more than two hands (so he’ll regularly write music where 8 pianos are supposed to be played by him at once and etc., or will simultaneously play 19 entirely different instruments all on his own, etc.), though he also uses it just for everyday stuff since the arms are kind of second nature to him now (like he doesn’t really have to consciously consider much, if he dropped something and wanted to catch it, an arm may just appear on it’s own to do so, etc.).  He spends most of his time sitting in his room with the door locked or off going to classes, just wants to be left alone to practice and write music.. He doesn't seem to actually have any friends, hobbies, or life, outside of classwork and his own musical projects and performances, though he has been known to try gardening every once in a while (he buys plants and tends to them for maybe a week, before he eventually gets so stressed out with other responsibilities he forgets to water them and they all die.. wait a few months and repeat lol). 
 Due to a combination of health issues, nightmares, and the severe burden of his workload (and his perfectionism in relation to it), he is pretty much always extremely sleep deprived which makes him easily annoyed and emotional (he’s that way even when not sleep deprived lol, but, it severely Amplifies it.. to the point where he stress cries over just dropping a notebook on the floor,, or will  run outside in the middle of the night because for the past 45 minutes his mind has been literally unable to do anything else but  fixate on this small dripping noise seemingly coming from outside his window so now he’s going to go angrily climb up the side of the building and fix whatever is making the noise before he burns down the apartment in an exasperated sleepless fit of noise rage, etc.). 
He regularly goes multiple days, sometimes even a full week without sleep, and is often just walking around like, disoriented and hallucinating and severely emotionally stressed, running into things or dropping stuff due to the reduction in motor skills (and just general cognitive processes) from sleep deprivation, feels like he's always about to pass out, etc. Though he's looked into a few different potions and enchantments to help with the effects of getting little sleep, most of them have had side effects he doesn't like, or haven't worked for some other reason, so for now he's still just stumbling around in the worst mental state possible most of the time (though he does luckily get a break every once in a while between school work and etc. and can actually rest, it's still usually only for a few days or less).  
He's naturally almost impossibly shy and reserved and soft spoken, though it’s not very obvious since most of the time when people actually see him outside of his room he’s stressed and only half awake (thus making him seem more confrontational or uncaring).  His only life goals are to gain recognition for his musical talent, and also to one day be in a position where he can sleep for three weeks straight and have no responsibilities to attend to. He also maybe wants to be a teacher but is the worst public speaker imaginable and would have no idea how to communicate with students. Since he's such a ridiculously extreme over-achiever, he'll probably come up with a hundred more goals for himself over the course of his life, but for now he can only handle so much in his already overburdened workload.   
They both get along generally, though they don’t know much about each other and hardly talk (aside from every once in a while when she does something like begs him to play rhythm games with her (because "you’re a professional musician so you’d be good at them right?!") and he reluctantly does for maybe 20 minutes before something about the game’s design or a random element of the environment (maybe a box of cookies spilled on the floor) makes him upset and he runs off back into his room stress crying (which she doesn’t understand how ridiculously little he sleeps or etc. so her perception of him is just that he’s like, legitimately so deeply affected by like.. cookies existing or something, she’s always just obliviously baffled about his moods like “wow, who would have thought someone hates lamps so much that they’d get upset over them! weird lol! :O “ ), they’re at least very civil and have enough common ground that it’s not impossible to share an apartment and they’re both responsible enough to pay their rent on time and etc. usually, despite constant disagreements over noise level and house chores (and bug friends).
 Though it'd probably help if they spent a little more time with each other, so that eventually he could see that she's much more than an irresponsible loud reckless but well intentioned fool that contributes to his sleep issues (especially since she has actual artistic talents, that could be something he'd have an admiration for if he ever actually saw them), and she could see the state he's actually in 24/7 and realize that he's not some insanely hyper-sensitive weird boy that sobs over seeing potato chips, it's just that he probably hasn't slept once in about a week and is usually in a pretty fragile state.

Process and wip images for A House That Holds Long Limbs (Part 2)

As a story progresses, I tend to become more comfortable with jumping ahead and around in my so-called process. This is mainly because the idea of getting deeper into the action is exciting and I want to get to drawing the pages as quickly as possible. The downside is that it usually results in a lot of “oops” and rework on what was supposed to be a final page.
Here you’ll see that script/pagination/thumbnailing and final pages are all starting to drift even more than in Part 1.

Earlier versions were even more point form and incoherent with typos. But, it only needs to capture enough that I can recognize key actions, points of dialogue, the mood, things to draw in the panels, etc. A few specific items to point out:
“[new part 2]”: The script originally had no exposition on rokurokubi - it went straight to Hokushin telling Raizen he was leaving. It occurred to me later, after I’d started thumbnailing, that inserting a few pages of storytelling narrative right here would help to further solidify the kaidan (traditional Japanese ghost story) effect and mood. More importantly, it creates a baseline reference for what the reader will know about rokurokubi for the purposes of this story. I was lucky that Part 1 and Part 2 were cut neatly enough that this wouldn’t be jarring.
I’m still not entirely happy with the text for this section, mainly the “features of note” about rokurokubi. Not just the fact that it’s oversimplification and slight adaptation of actual Japanese folklore - which can’t be avoided unless I want to write a historical essay here. I’m mainly not super keen on how each of the three items has been phrased. It’d be nice to make the three points more parallel in terms of length, but I couldn’t seem to edit, increase the number of points (by splitting them up), or reorder it effectively without negatively impacting other aspects of pacing and information reveal. More points would draw out the pages longer than I wanted, and some points were clearly sub to other points. The final here is the “good enough” version. JUST GET IT DONE ALREADY SO THAT IT CAN GO OUT INTO THE WORLD.
Sooo many word choice changes. The biggest one, done at the last second, was “They are almost always female” to “They are rarely male”. Other phrasings I debated - “They are very rarely male”, “They are almost never male”, etc. Lemme tell ya, it’s easy to get lost in the weeds… Anyways, the main reason for this was because after I drew it and ran the text through my head, the originally-intended juxtaposition of Hokushin on this page with the word “female” felt too subtle. I felt it would create a brief moment of cognitive dissonance that didn’t serve the flow of the story, so I changed it to create emphasis on the same gender instead with the rationale that it will flow more smoothly and allow the reader to focus their attention on the fact “males are very rare” more than the mental hiccup of processing the juxtaposition. DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE?? It made sense in my head.
Anyhow, I’m sure there are people who will disagree with many of the decisions I’ve made, but at least you can see what I was trying to do.

The first two rows on the left hand page are actually the same set of pages - you can see little arrows pointing down or to the right whenever I’m dissatisfied with a thumbnail and attempt to redraw it.

I really like how Hokushin turned out in the last panel here; I like the pencils more than the final inked version. It’s also another example of changing text up to the last second. In case it’s hard to make out, it says (along with what happened to them in the final):
First thought bubble: Ugh, whatever… (moved to the next page, seemed to work better as the end exclamation for this sequence of thoughts before he turns his attention to something else)
Over Hokushin’s head: Aaaargh (moved into the thought bubble)
Second thought bubble: He’s not my responsibility anyways! (no change)
First arrow:  *already feeling bad* (no change)
Second arrow:  *too responsible* (dropped, since a previous panel already said “too responsible”. Too redundant)
Next to Hokushin: All he did was tie me up in a tree (no change)

The above panel “And at night...” was a thrilling and scary thing for me lmao.  I don’t usually tackle large patches/fills of black, since many of my comics are scribbly in style (pencils, hatching) or colour. I’m too lazy for screentones, traditional or digital. It’ll be interesting as parts of the story coming up will involve poorly lit/dim/dark spaces. I’ve been reviewing how other artists handle it, particularly those with styles driven by pure-ink or minimalist type approaches. Two immediate examples from Yu Yu Hakusho that I’ve been going back to are the dark room fights during Genkai’s successor trials (I’ve taken a similar approach here), and the haunted bedroom case in volume 19. Hardcore cross-hatching seems like a likely route, but that freaks me out when I have to do it over faces. I’d like to minimize or avoid screentoning out of principle, but I still want to create a clear mood, so we’ll see how it goes...

This was my view while inking this page - holding the book in one hand while inking Hokushin with the other. Using the more freehand, sketchy inking style for this comic was so helpful in terms of reducing my inking anxiety and allowing me to work faster.
It’s always great when you can find a reference for period armor (because I find armor very difficult) that is so close to the pose you’re already drawing. There are some small differences - for example, Hokushin’s head is turned more to the right; his left arm is turned and raised more as he’s pulling the sword upwards. But it’s close enough.
Also, spotlight on a few of the books I’ve referenced over the course of working on North Bound in general and this part specifically.

Clockwise from top left:
日本服飾史 女性編 and 男性編 (History of clothing/costume in Japan female and male editions). This marvelous set of books highlights Japanese fashion throughout history. I’ve actually been referencing these photos for a long time before I ever picked up these books - you can see them at the Costume Museum’s website here, alongside helpful line drawings and translations of some of the details. But the books allow me to see a lot more detail.
Hokusai manga vol 1 (this book is published as part of a set of 3). Sketches by Hokusai. This one focuses on “The life and manners of the day” and includes drawings of youkai, including rokurokubi, as well. You can check out the drawings online at places like The Pulverer Collection Online Catalogue.
Action references!! Real Action Pose Collection 02 (focuses on sword fights) and my favourite Samurai & Ninja Action Scene Collection. Not used as much in Long Limbs, but was helpful in some of the other chapters. The time frame is really much later than what I need for ideal clothing references, but it’s helpful for things like movement.
Kekkaishi volume 32. SPOILER a key flashback takes place about 500 years ago, which is actually a few centuries off give or take from but at least it’s closer than the Edo period. I’ve been looking at it for houses, some clothing.
Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix - Civil War parts 1 and 2. I reference this so much while working on North Bound in general. It has scenes with peasants and commoners and some appropriate street and interior environments, not just stuff focused on the aristocracy or warrior classes. Just have to remember that they flipped all the artwork in the English version lol
Bunch of Yu Yu Hakusho manga and anime references from the end of the series, mostly for Raizen, the kudakusushi and just to check against things he or Hokushin said. The actual clothing and environments are not helpful at all lol
Last minute edits
After I posted, I discovered a few mistakes (of course). I used to freak out a lot and drop everything to fix it. Now I just sigh and laugh (and still freak out a little bit, depending on the mistake) and then decide what’s important enough to fix and what is like, “Oh well, whatever, move on with my life”.
I feel that seeing other artists share their frustrations and mistakes helps a lot of people feel better about it when they realize IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME TO EVERYONE (including professionals. There are errors like this in professionally published series, like Yu Yu Hakusho, too). YOU’RE NOT ALONE. 
So, these ones bugged me enough that I quickly redrew them on the computer.

Live Blogging: Death Note (The Movie)
DEATH NOTE, NETFLIX ORIGINAL FILM (Somehow… I don’t know how, but apparently it is an original even though it existed prior to the creation but you know, NETFLIX and shit…)
 Blogger’s Note: I’ve watched Death Note the anime and I’ve read about half of the manga, so I’m decently familiar with how this story is supposed to pan out, okay, and I’m just going to live blog my feelings about this thing that exists. You don’t have to agree or disagree with my ramblings. That being said, I never trust a nearly perfect rating – which this film has – so let’s just move on forward.
YOU ARE HEREBY WARNED OF SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE DEATH NOTE MOVIE, THE DEATH NOTE ANIME, AND THE DEATH NOTE MANGA.
 PRE-WATCH: I’ve seen a few different trailers. I’m excited to see L being played by a person of color since it gives us this anti-hero/heroic character that is generally viewed with positivity. That’s particularly awesome. I’m also impressed that they were able to keep Ryuk looking so much like he does in the manga and anime.

 Oh, they fixed his name. It’s about as close as it’s going to get in an American accent.
 That’s not what happened with the Death Note passing happened. Ryuk did it as a joke. There’s a different shinigami who actually had this happen – but you know – Netflix is taking a page of the book Disney read before destroying the canon!verse of Star Wars…. So…

 Honestly, this would make a really popular fanfiction. Probably hundreds of reviews and hundreds of thousands of views – and I would’ve been happier with it being a fanfiction.

 Hate feelings, mostly, but if this wasn’t an anime/manga – this would be pretty dope. I have to give Netflix some credit there. I honestly think that for as much fucking this up as they’ve done – that there are things that are working.
 The hyper-Americanization of it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth – but it’s not TERRIBLE. It is very fucked up and terrible and rotten and I want it to be RIGHT. But… since it cannot be right… AT LEAST IT IS GOOD.

  And that open ended ending makes me feel like I need some alcohol.
 So I’m going to rate this like…
 3.5/5. It’s better than average and has it’s spectacular moments, but the numerous plot holes were inexcusable at times. I could have handled the Americanization and the AU sense – IF, and only IF – the characters had been more accurate to their original incarnations. If those characterizations had been more accurate, I think I would have been a little bit less upset about the other changes.
 Honestly, if you can set yourself aside from the wild differences, it’s worth the watch.

A Disclosed Past - The Duel Profiler VS the Black Rose Witch
Everybody who’s still following or curious about this project listen!
Phew, managed to get this guy all nice and done! In case this is the first you’re hearing about my mini-project here:
So, the official Spanish YGO channel on YouTube flubbed a few uploads of the 5D’s dub such that they ended up uploading a few episodes of the English dub instead of the Latin American dub (21-29)–but with none of 4Kids’s background music! Which meant that I could swoop in and re-insert the original Japanese soundtrack (which I did by matching each track to how it was looped in the episode), but I wanted to do more by also tweaking the dub itself so that not only was it matching the original footage, but the dialogue was more in line with the original dialogue timing-wise (since I couldn’t salvage much of what they changed).  Hence, the “dubbed uncut” gimmick here.

So, this was another interesting one to work with--I think overall this episode’s dub definitely benefits from having the Japanese music at *all*, but getting the dialogue a bit more in line with the Japanese script was the more "fun” task here.  A few parts were essentially done by just throwing in the Japanese version’s dialogue-less audio to eliminate some of the extra fluff, and others were more about rearranging or recycling certain lines (some from 23 or 24 when I needed something for Aki) to eliminate some more fluff or make my matching the JP script flow better.  I also fixed an error that bugged me from Tanner about the Black Rose being down to her last few “ATK” points; I ran a line of his from episode 7 through PhonicMind.com to remove the music and splice in “Life” there (I actually did that with much of the second half of that ep so I’ll probably try to do the JP OST thing there too~) For the bits that I felt were just too far edited by 4Kids that I couldn’t do much with them, I thought I’d slip in subs for the Japanese version of the scenes so you get the original context in there; that’ll just be for this hardsub, as you’ll have softsubs to work with when I post this for download over on NAC.  You can see it in action in this preview here.  Also going ahead and translating the “Today’s Best Card” and title cards along with the OP/EN going forward, lol.
Like 21, 22′s dueling dialogue was handled about as well as you’d expect at this point in the dub (though I clarified Koda’s line about Akiza losing “half [Black Rose Dragon’s] ATK [in damage] when he uses Mind Monster), but I did modify things on Akiza’s end where I could to tone down her dramatic flair and have her give the same kind of coolly energy Aki does, using some of her Duel Links lines to that end (like her “Battle!” line), recycling some lines (”Hope you don’t mind but ladies first!”->”The first move is mine! [from 23] I draw!” and also some lines from 23 to lead into her backstory flashback), or shortening some of her other lines.  I also stitched together a line to lead into recreating her Synchro chant for Black Rose [may sound a bit off, but I really didn’t like her fluff there]; I essentially did that bit from the ground-up like I did that undubbed footage in 26, redoing the SFX, queuing her Duel Links chant properly, and throwing in her “Black Binding Bloom!!” over BRD’s zero-ATK effect (see preview link above).  Came out really well, if I say so myself. :P
Unfortunately, I couldn’t edit out too much of Koda’s dialogue since he’s not in Duel Links yet and this is his only appearance, though I did tweak his thoughts about his defenses against BRD a bit by recycling an earlier line you likely forgot about by that point, maybe.  And I also recreated how I handled the beginning of 23 when I first started this project, switching to his Japanese scream for a sec or two as he’s hit by Rose Curse’s damage to edit out Akiza’s horrible dialogue at the end (and the same tweaks to Tanner’s and Yusei’s dialogue).
Music-wise, recreating the OST was fun; this episode uses some of my faves like Mind Games, Showdown, and Izayoi Battle so it’s fun to work with those.  Dragon (playing over the BRD scene) seems to never play at its Sound Duel album speed in these episodes, though... The whole song’s sped up by 1s in this episode (in 26, it was a sec or two faster), so that was kind of a pain to sync up to the Japanese version, but the end result is neat.  Maybe I’ll do a side video or two with the dub’s actual dialogue and just the OST to see what folks think of it.  Also added back a ton of SFX because for some reason they’re really low/hard to hear in this musicless audio 4K uploaded, and I did tweak a few lines a bit so I could take out some of the pointless SFX 4Kids added.
Overall, happy with how this came out, but if anyone has any input (like “UGH I HATE THE JP DIALOGUE SUBS”), feel free to share! With this done now, I’ll work my way back onto GX and get stuff ready to knock the Seven Stars arc off my finalizing list; thinking I’ll aim to get 47-49 done together, or at least prep stuff for all three and then get them done, but I’d like to get 48 and 49 out simultaneously again like I did the Amnael duel.  I’ll be revisiting my handling of 5D’s 23 for this project to update it for how I decided to do these as of 25, and also for the Duel Links audio and wanting to throw in the Synchro chants again in 24.  Stay tuned!
