and i have talked a bit about skam france s5 when i was watching it live but im more than happy to talk about it again & put all of my thoughts into one post JFJSJD.

let me just put a disclaimer here for abuse, both personal & what was shown in the season. also adding a read more because this got LONG, i am so sorry. i talk a lot </3 (ignore the spelling errors, i literally woke up and saw this anon and jumped out of bed to answer dflkgjkdlg)

also! i talk about deafness as a disability in this but that’s my own personal experience & what was written into the season. we know arthur sees it as a disability because he was raised in a hearing society as a hearing person. not all D/deaf people believe this!! this isn’t universal.

first things first, i just wanted to let people know these feelings come from a very personal place. i lost my hearing similarly to arthur — i was beaten as a young child and as the years have gone on and i’ve grown, my hearing has gotten worse. i was hard of hearing with mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears and now i call myself deaf because i have severe hearing loss in my left ear & i am completely deaf in my right ear. (don’t worry about being apologetic or anything! i’m very open about how i lost my hearing because although it’s sad & traumatic, it’s talking about how trauma and disabilities are often more intertwined than people realize. you don’t ever see a disabled person thriving in their natural environment. you see traumatized disabled people learning how to survive.)

i don’t have problems with how arthur lost his hearing. i think it’s a very important story to tell & it’s one that does occur — even if people don’t recognize it. it added to the fear and isolation he felt during his season because he was suddenly extremely disconnected from his peers and the people he called his best friends.

i also absolutely ADORE noee and camille. having a Deaf* woman who was as sassy and blunt and straight-forward as she was is a good thing. people often talk about how D/deaf individuals can come across as rude or unattentive or too blunt and it can be true but when people often talk about it, they do it in a rude/offensive manner! noee did it in a manner that wasn’t stereotypical and felt real. she also had the distain towards hearing people because they continually traumatized & belittled her and they showed that in a way that you knew was justified. she had been hurt by these people and she knew what arthur was experiencing, hence why she was so warm around him. having a Deaf love interest who wasn’t a hearing-people pleaser or someone who needed approval from hearing people was so good because it helped add layers of her own identity that the audience may not even realize exists.

camille as well. having a hard of hearing gay (queer? i can’t remember what he labelled himself as) person on screen without fetishism or trauma porn was refreshing. that doesn’t happen and seeing it was?? amazing. he was able to have fun, be himself, etc. also him acting as a connector between noee and arthur is a reality as well. he exists inbetween both of their worlds and while it’s clear that he is comfortable and okay with it, it’s a reality that often stems into feelings of anger and hurt. (as shown in arthur!) it’s good to see a hard of hearing person who doesn’t feel ostracized from the Deaf community & or the hearing community. he’s just vibing!

the isolation that arthur felt. the lonelines, the pain, the fear—all of it is a reality of the situation he was in. even with his friends attempting to support him in the ways they knew how, he still felt alone. having noee and camille there was such a good!! good thing!!! to have. the way noee criticized his friends, the way ARTHUR eventually yelled at them (especially lucas, like wtf was up his ass), the growth of arthur from clinging onto his fantasy world and accepting himself. i geniunely enjoyed these aspects.

NOW ONTO MY CRITICISMS.

my biggest one is the abuse clip. it was absolutely unnecessary for them to include the audio (and the shadowing) of arthur’s violent abuse. i understand they needed to potray his dad’s behaviours but there were many other ways to go about it that doesn’t re-traumatize people. i rarely rarely get triggered by things due to desensitization & repression and this made me extremely nauseous and it caused me to spiral into memories of my own abuse. yes, i understand the story of arthur’s dad being the villain and contributing to the trauma. no, it did not need to be done in this way.

also the way it was brushed aside & arthur forgave him after the car accident. i know it’s contributing to the cycle of abuse and it will continue after the seasons have passed but i think it should have had more fear, confusion or anger. we could see that arthur hated his father, just by how he constantly attempted to fight back and argue. i understand that it was him acting from a place of survival and trying to mediate to make things calmer but this is his perspective—we could have felt the underlying emotions or seen a brief moment where arthur let his anger take over when he was alone. the abuse was written solely for hearing people. it was trauma porn. it was used as a way to make people feel sorry for arthur and to weaken him. it wasn’t written as integrated into the plot as it should have been and was brought up only to deter the plot away from his cheating. it was one of the things that made it clear the plot was more written for hearing people than for deaf people.

(again, it’s not the actual story i’m criticizing. it’s how they integrated it.)

the second was noee using her voice to essentially beg arthur to love her. using her voice was a moment of vulnerability and fear that they could have either: a. used in a different manner or b. not included at ALL. i am an oral deaf person—i was raised in a hearing environment & i went to speech thrapy for many, many years. i use my voice a lot. however, whenever i am without my hearing aid and i am tired, i don’t often use my voice because i am insecure about my deaf accent.

noee doesn’t use her voice at all. she has talked about how using only sign language gives her power and stregethnes her identity in a way that the hearing world would never be able to. it was a pivotal moment of her own identity and growth and they threw it out the window to tell arthur she loved him. he rejected her so she used her voice, something that reminds her of her trauma and pain, to beg him to love her back.

another is how alexia said that she wasn’t wired to love disabled people. i love alexia as well, except for this alone was enough to hurt my opinion of her. it’s a reality of abled people—they often act like loving a disabled person is more work and view disabled people as less than to avoid seeing them as potential lovers/friends/etc. my main problem is the fact it wasn’t ever properly addressed and they used it as a plot device after she had been nothing but loving and supportive to arthur during the beginning of his journey. she was so, so loving and caring and they could have used to as a way to talk about how relationships and perspective changes rather having her just be straight up ableist.

when arthur first got his hearing aids, he got smaller ones that were less visible to avoid having other people see. this is a big example of internalized ableism and is a very important point but they never touched on it again. i think it would have been more personal and monumental of his growth to have him go back & change the hearing aids he uses to better aid him in his day-to-day rather than aid his desire to be hearing-passing. i just wanted to see continuation of this.

the love triangle. ABSOLUTELY USELESS. i love both alexia and noee as love interests. they are well-developed women who both had vulnerable moments in the season where they talked about their insecurities and were vulnerable and still had arthur reject/use them both. this is more of a fandom criticism but the love triangle was used solely to demonize noee while they continued to put arthur on a pedestal. the season could have gone either/or with them as love interests or not at all. the season was meant to focus on his journey as a now disabled person and the love triangle took up a large portion of that.

(don’t think i’ve forgotten about people calling others fatphobic/biphobic for preferring noee as a love interest)

this isn’t entirely a criticism but a good point to note. i don’t think skam france had a plan in regards to season five when they casted arthur but he should have been played by a hard of hearing person and there should have been foreshadowing in the earlier seasons for this. i think arthur’s actor did a fantastic job with the content he was given but it would have been a bit more personal if played by a truly deaf/hoh person. noee’s actress talked about this! she said how good of an opportunity it was for season five to occur because it’s extremely rare for deaf people to get opportunities and casting designed for them. having a main actress talk about this and still having the main actor being abled is a bit? bad taste. i just think it’s a product of lack of planning, is all.

backstory

01 - - - it’s the title of your life; not good enough. it’s a title that split your nails and bruised your fingertips as you attempt to get rid of it —— change it into something, something more hopeful. it’s their eyes that weigh you down from a young age, those skeptical eyes paired with their disappointed sighs that dance around your head and no matter how much you try to shake them away, tear them away, not good enough turns into you’ll never be good enough. The lavish lifestyle you lead is a bandaid over a wound torn way too wide, but you make do believing that maybe, it’ll scar over one day.

and so they pamper you with things to keep you quiet, two people who brought you into this world but are nothing more than strangers who reside, sometimes, at the same residence. Your mother is the maid who helps you get ready for school, your father is the chef who always prepares you snacks late into the night because —— he feels bad for you. That handsome man in the pressed suit who shares your name? a stranger who pretends to be more in front of his high class “ f r i e n d s. ” that beautiful woman whom you look so similar to? a stranger who wears you like an accessory when it benefits her.

a family only when it is convenient. it’s a concept you get use to —— it’s either adapt or suffer ( you suffer, you’re a needy child who seeks attention and is denied affection ). but you understand the concept. you find comfort in music and dance; two things you’re good at ( your parents aren’t impressed, they’d prefer it if you spent your time studying and not on “ useless hobbies ” ). but it’s something you won’t give up —— can’t give up, so you pursue it and in doing so you’re introduced to potential happiness.

02 - - - the butterflies in your stomach are present and it almost gets the better of you. but you stay for your audition, your voice shakes but you recover, and somehow you make it to the end. it doesn’t surprise you when your parents are not accepting of your choice to become a trainee, but for once you couldn't care less what they think. you move into the dorms and begin your new life.

there is an image you want to craft for yourself. someone cool and dependable, unlike your real self. not soft and needy and lonely, but confident, strong and talented. you lose kim chanyeol and find chan, a person you want to be, but someone you are not. but you’re not entirely sure you like your real self, so you continue to hide behind a tougher exterior,

you experience heartbreak for the first time, she rips the beating thing out of your chest and stomps on it ( you’re being dramatic, you understand why, but it doesn’t change the fact that it hurt you ). you’re ready to give up your career for her, but she’s not as stupid as you are and so she gives you up. you should be thankful, she saved your career, but all you feel is bitterness.

EVR10 becomes your main focus, your only focus. there’s a void in in you again and so you try to fill it with the group, with practice, with long nights dancing and throwing water bottles because damn, once again you’re thinking you’re not good enough. you helped pave the way, but part of you fears ever10 will become a distant memory in the wake of CATHEXIS.

personality

there is something almost sinful about chanyeol on stage. his actions are purposeful, his gaze lingers on the faces of his fans and his bottom lip is prisoner between his teeth. the way he moves his body is alluring, and his stage presence is deadly. he feeds off the energy of the crowd, lives for it, he loves being on stage —— performing —— and it shows. to put it simply, he is a huge flirt on stage, in fan meets, during vlives. —— he is raising his eyebrows, smirking, running his fingers through his hair, biting his lips and licking them.

there are certain elements of chan that he tries to incorporate off the stage. he wants to be that confident and bold, but he often comes off more as playful off stage. he’s approachable and warm; a soft heart that he tries to hide behind something cool and impressive. he’s rather insecure, his group members catch him training late into the night and might assume he’s just a hard worker, but most of the time he’s still practicing because he’s frustrated with himself, thinks he’s lacking, letting every down.

he is a ball of sass; he likes poking fun of others, but he tends to mean well the majority of the time. he’s that person looking for his partner-in-crime, he’s that person breaking certain rules because he wants to have a good time. he’s that person laughing so hard and so loud, hoping he’ll drown out the screeching of his own insecurities and self-doubt. he’s thoughtful and protective, but he can also hold grudges and be extremely bitter and salty toward people he’s not on good terms with.

in a nutshell

- rich boy with parents who were workaholics with high expectations, didn't really do a good job with the whole parenting thing and he's pretty bitter because he'd have preferred their time to presents. also bitter that they made him feel like he could never be good enough for them.

- became an idol without their approval. he got his bitterness from them and so at first, they cut off contact with him. after evr10 reached success, of course they changed their tune. too little, too late he's still incredibly bitter toward them.

- as a trainee he was constantly in trouble for hooking up with other trainees and people in general outside of the industry. but, like, he's always been like this so it was hard for him to change. and then after he debuted he met haena and fell in love way too quickly, but she gave him attention and he was hooked?

- aur found out about their relationship and gave them an ultimatum: break up or get the boot. he was 100% ready to leave, but haena broke up with him because she's smart and knows love doesn't equal money or stability and they're young af. chanyeol is just bitter now, but, like, she saved his career so he should be thankful. all of these flavors and he chooses to be salty, can relate.

- biggest flirt? he's here. also super dumb so watch out, he might catch feelings for anyone who gives him the time of day. and yet at the same time after haena, he's reluctant to even entertain the thought of being in a relationship.

- soft af, for real. he tries to hide it, but sometimes he just can't??? fans say he's got hella duality, but he'd prefer if they just see his sexy side and stop gushing over those videos of him completely losing it and being the softest bun.

- holds grudges forever. but, like, usually not over petty things.

- pretty shameless, ngl. claims he's not, but this boy is a liar.

- feelings get hurt very easily and he gets very mean when someone hurts him.

- works very hard, but he's super insecure so he's always trying to go the extra mile.

- lowkey worried about cathexis gaining more popularity. glad they're doing well, but he doesn't want evr10 to be forgotten. 

plots

01. his best friend? please? partner in crime, always going out for drinks and doing dumb things and narrowly keeping from getting caught by aur staff?

02. on the opposite, an enemy? these two can't stand each other? throwing shade at each other and lowkey in interviews too, but no one knows who each other are referring to except them? but then acting chummy when being recorded together because aur ain't having any of their shit?

03. something romantic? chan doesn't do romance but change his mind, break his heart again because i love angst. something unrequited on either side? one of them finds out and it's super awkward now? more than friends, but less than lovers? fans ship these two together and it's hilarious but maybe they're onto something these two are oblivious to or ignoring?

04. sibling-like bond? chan can be an absolute mess so someone who can keep him in line would be great?

05. anythiiiiiiiiiing.

ok where to even start with this mess? He is occasionally unsupportive of his friends, AS ARE ALL TEENAGERS. Might I remind you, he is also the guy who gave up his life so his friend had a chance to defeat Voldemort. Negging Hermione? Listen if you’re only going to bring up things from the first 3 books you can’t make an argument. Can I remind you of all the times he stuck up for her (Against snape, draco, etc.), the time he offered himself up for torture so hermione didn’t have to, learns from her, the fact that he’s her emotional support, and the fact that she smells ron when she smells amortentia. Enough about Hermione. Let’s get to Ron and Harry. First of all, just because he’s a guy???? I’m sorry but it’s canon he is Harry’s best friend and it has absolutely nothing to do with gender. Please don’t bring that argument in when it’s irrelevant. Hermione doesn’t provide all the emotional support. No matter how hard you twist the books, there are more scenes of Ron being the emotional support than Hermione. Now to the beliefs part. Hermione does stick up for her beliefs. Ron is not Hermione!!!! Ron is admittedly a bigot at the beginning of the books. He is judgemental towards other people and believes to be better than House Elves. But he grows. The whole reason him and Hermione kiss is because of the fact that he wants to save the House Elves. He learns from his mistakes and becomes a better person because of it and that’s the tea. Everytime I see someone arguing on why Ron is a bad character, they bring up the few times he left Harry and Hermione. This is wrong, there’s no denying that. He didn’t handle his feelings well. But he isn’t perfect. Also the argument that people love to use, the 7th book leaving, is practically invalid. He was wearing the horcrux for far too long, and it is canon that the horcrux messes with people’s minds and emotions.If we don’t blame Ginny for the Chamber of Secrets, we don’t blame Ron for leaving. Simple as that.  

People want to hate Ron for a few mistakes while ignoring problems with Hermione and Harry’s characters. Also wow he comes from a good family. A family that he was never able to shine in. He was always forgotten because of Percy and the twins and Bill. He is a kid growing up, never getting enough attention, and then being outshone by his best friend. That is hard on a tween and it makes sense that he would act out. To his viewpoint, his family loves Harry and focuses on him more. He is obviously wrong about that, but no wonder he is jealous of Harry. From his perspective, Harry gets the attention from Ron’s family and the public. This is obviously an incorrect perspective, but do y’all really wanna argue and say you’ve never seen only the good side of people’s lives. Also families don’t always equal emotions? 

Overall, op seems to be arguing that Ron is selfish and doesn’t deserve Hermione. Let me make a quick list of some of the times he was unselfish that y’all love to look over (this is all the books, i don’t fuck with the movies). 

- Puts himself between Harry and Hermione and danger (POA)

-Willingly put his life on the line so Harry could continue in his quest (PS)

- Consistently defends Hermione and Harry from rude people (all books)

-Took Harry away from an abusive situation and presented him with a loving family (COS)

-Grew as a human and didn’t make the same mistakes he made as a kid

-When he came back, he helped destroy the horcrux and helped Harry continue on his quest (which is an underappreciated parallel) (7th book)

-Insisted Harry come see the World Cup (A one in a life time chance) because Harry is Ron’s best friend

-As a twelve year old, he faced his biggest fear to help his friend (COS)

-Ron not making fun Harry for not knowing wizard things

The last argument I would like to make is that Ginny and Hermione aren’t perfect either. You can attack Ron all you want but if you do, please take a look at your beloved Hermione. Hermione is an incredible character but she is human. She has faults and makes mistakes, but is never attacked like Ron is. 

In Conclusion, Ron Weasley is a character with faults. He can be annoying and selfish. But that doesn’t take away from his bravery, his kindness, his character development, and his overall awesomeness. Stop calling “Ron” useless, Harry and Hermione wouldn’t have survived the first movie without him. This has been a PSA

Preview: Sam can go DIAF with Abigail, Interrupting Dariela is the worst and the writers need to stop using her to squee-block me, Mitch/Jamie is my everything and I need Jackson to come back into the fold with them, and how the hell did I come up with so many words for an episode that was mostly plot advancement and only had like five standout scenes.

Mitch/Jamie 1. Looks like at least part of my headcanon last week about Mitch letting Jamie out can't be jossed! I'm so glad we got this scene in a sneak peek, because I replayed Jackson's indignation and Mitch's cheerfully dismissive response to it about 80 times. 2. Would it be irresponsible of me to assume that they spent last night together? Because part of me is still wondering if they've even touched in the wake of everything, but I would really like to believe they drowned their sorrows in each other. I don’t know how to reconcile the easy banter of the next number or the fact that they don’t touch in this episode. 3. I love the glee Mitch takes in pestering Jamie about her apparent fear of babies, all geared up to tease her mercilessly -- this must be the most fun he's had in days -- and how fast the truth wipes the smug smirk off his face. It's beautiful and terrible and I hope it socked him right in the gut to see the extent of the damage his words did. If he didn't introduce the thought into her head, he sure cemented whatever doubts she already had. 3.5. And kudos to Kristen Connolly for being able to sell those lines with a straight face, because on paper it looks hella dramatic to be like "I'm so awful that I will physically curse a baby if I touch it" 4. I am little embarrassed that my headcanon gets shot down when Mitch not only doesn't take back the darkness line, he doubles down to include himself in it -- but I also really, really like him admitting he would have killed Abigail himself?  "I've been thinking" is a fic prompt and I would love a little character study of Mitch coming to this realization, but either way, I’m intrigued by Dark!Mitch. I want the antidote in hand, I need to be able to believe they will eventually run away and find the light at the end of tunnel, but right now I could be very into a Dark & Twisty OTP of Pain and Feelings. 5. "She kept me away from everything and everyone I ever cared about. Everyone I love." Said with bold and unflinching eye contact and I am 6% frustrated that this is about the third time he's confessed his feelings and Jamie is still batting a hundred on insufficient reactions to them, but 94% overjoyed that the L word is out there to more than just some thugs in a bar. Sometimes there are more exciting ways to hear it than the standard 3-word way. (not that I would turn that down) 6. Now I just need to know who is responsible for Interrupting Dariela arriving on TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS instead of extending either "darkness" convo scene literally ten or twelve more seconds for some kind of proper resolution before a scene change. Tell me he wasn’t about to reach for her hand in the first one. (Also. It takes a magnifying glass and freeze framing, but I'm pretty sure in the split second before they get interrupted the second time, it looks like their hands were or about to be in contact and are drawing apart as the shot goes wide?) A Series Of Live Viewing Reactions To Clem's Baby Daddy 1. Awwww @ Sam hoping (in vain) that Mitch will accept him as a real member of the family. 2. WHAT THE SHIT, SAM. I TRIED TO BE NICE TO YOU. 3. All right, abort that whole plan from last week about letting him be HOH, Sam can fuck off and die and I hope Mitch takes such full ownership of the baby* that he takes to introducing him to people as "my kid, once removed." I'm not Jackson and I don't care who was raised by a madwoman. If Abe's voice + everyone's love for Clementine didn't convince you you're on the wrong team, you are beyond help and I’ll put you down.

*I don't think I can fully convey to you the amount I love Mike Baxter's relationship with Boyd on Last Man Standing, mostly because I'm not sure how many people know this show exists. 4. ...ABIGAIL R U SERIOUS. (Guys, I'm sorry if I previously claimed to be off the sympathy-for-the-devil train; those were lies but I am sure as hell off it now with her baby-snatching reveal and subsequent taunting. That's not even emotional torture porn, that is just cruelty for its own sake.) 5. Welp, I think you know what this means, Mitch and Jackson bonding over shooting straight from raising a baby to parenting a 20-year-old Y/Y?? 6. But seriously, I am so upset at not even considering this theory before today. He's the right age! He's a conveniently random orphan! This show is all, "People love twists!" I kept assuming the father of the Miracle Baby had to be someone super significant! The biggest kicker of all is that I've assumed from the get-go that Jackson's late wife was black (which I hope is not somehow racist to assume?), and Sam is right there looking plausibly biracial as heck, and somehow not once did those two threads of thought ever cross. Come On Guys, Be Bros When I made this tongue-in-cheek request last year re: Mitch and Jackson, I could not in my wildest dreams have imagined them to one day share a grandchild, so while I honestly don't care how Jackson's being-a-daddy issues will play out, I care VERY MUCH what it means that he and Mitch are now on the same family tree, starting with how he now has an ironclad excuse to bond with Clementine and never be out of her life again. (I guess he can bond with his actual kid too. if he must.)

But that short chat on the upper level, just listening to them talk about their respective families is like catnip to my ears. I don't know how I'm supposed to read Mitch's expression after Jackson walks off in his "you worry about your family, let me worry about mine" huff, so I've elected to interpret it as "You're my family too, dumbass." (hush and let me have my dream) (Also I would kind of like to know why Jackson is still as willing to talk rationally with Mitch as he is given that Mitch is on Team Jamie, or as Jackson prefers to call it, She Devil Incarnate. I mean, it boils down to Jackson being a sexist jerk, but I still want to have All The Thinky Thoughts about how Mitch functions as a go between.) Beta Ship 2.0 MY SHIP RADAR IS BACK ON AND FULLY FUNCTIONING. I don't want to scare it away by being too excited about it. Just know that my heart burst into bloom when they got their reunion hug*, crescendoed for the kiss, and by the time they were fawning over the baby together it was pretty well at a tea kettle pitch. *Abe and Dariela take over as the center of the frame immediately, but am I looking at it or listening to them at all? No. I'm trying to shove them out of the way and peering at the edge of the screen where my new faves are nearly out of the frame, persistently tracking Jackson's hands on Tessa as they examine her cut and cup the back of her head and asdlkasjdfasd time to go dig up the 3x01 Time Capsule O' Sweetness. Various and Sundry -I enjoyed the writers finally acknowledging how awfully prone to hacking / general failure this plane is. -This was going to be its own category, but it's late, so suffice to say that Mitch + Not Being A Mess Of Emotions About His Dead Father was very nicely dovetailed with concern for Clem and a cute debate about baby names, and I'm just happy they addressed it all, if still annoyed that the impact of Max's death on Jamie was not. -Jackson takes up Mitch's vacated seat next to Clementine when the plane starts falling and has his hand bracing the baby's head and yes hello I am dying. -Clem is so excited to offer her baby to Jamie for holding, even eager to reassure her "you won't hurt him," and yes hello I am dying again. -"I know I'm right. -I told you before I had 18 heart attacks watching this episode live, so I don't think it's unreasonable to mention dying again re: the part where Jamie has the baby foisted upon her before she can protest, and Baby immediately stops crying*... Wait, no, this is the opposite of dying. This moment is Life.

-*nice insufficient reaction to noticing her finally holding the baby, Mitch. Who is directing this episode, because they are Bad at it. -I literally could not be more neutral about Logan's face or potential longevity. I am a 0 on the PH scale of feelings. -Everything about Jackson's final face off with Abigail and her stupid endless villain gloating was the wooorst. -I am a little concerned that reaching the barrier is supposed to qualify as our traditional episode 12 "get off now if you want this series to have a happy ending" exit, both because it's not that satisfying and because there is way too much left unresolved. I can only hope this means that we'll get it near the end of the real finale, with only a tiny twist at the end to set up a hypothetical season 4 that can be easily pinched off and forgotten if need be. Up Next: I'm not sure if I can watch the finale live. I have to have all my work done 6 hours earlier than usual, and then I'm taking off to go dog-sit all day, and if I watch it live I am gonna be useless from the time it starts airing until I drop from emotional exhaustion around 3 AM. If I can get enough work done by 9 PM, I probably will, but I also kind of want to savor it in case this is the last new one I ever get.
