Pasta Primavera
Hey everyone! I guess the first post for the baptism of this blog should be something simple and tasty. I decided to post a recipe I use quite often in my home: Pasta Primavera.
Difficulty: easy
Time for preparation: 45 min - 1 hour
Number of plates: 4-5
Price: 5 - 7.50 euros
Ingredients:
500 g of pasta (preferably Penne, around 1 euro)
250 g of Mozzarella cheese (2.50 euros)
250 - 300 g of Cherry tomatoes (1.50 euros)
200 g of chopped proscuitto (1-2 euros)
2-3 chens of garlic ( a few cents)
3 cubes of butter (50 cents)
rucola (optional)
origano (optional)
olive oil
salt
pepper
So, as you assumed, we are making pasta today. This particular pasta may be one of my favourites because of the mix of flavours and textures. The cherry tomatoes bring out the juicy and sweet, the mozzarella brings out the texture and the proscuitto is the bold and salty tone of the mix. The flavour is certainly not for someone who doesn’t like bold food with a lot of flavour and a strong aroma. This is also a cheap meal, considering prices at reastaurants, so it’s a great way to make an unordinary meal for a little amount of money. It’s perfect for an every-now-and-then breakage of the food monotony of a student life. Anywhoo, let’s get into it!
The first step is to prepare a pot with water for the pasta. I usually put olive oil and salt as I put the water on the stove. Since the cooking of the pasta is the longest step, I reccomend doing it first.
As you have prepared your water, you need to chop up your ingredients! By ingredients, I mean the mozzarella cheese, the cherry tomatoes, the proscuitto and the garlic. I like to chop up my cheese and proscuitto into little squares. The easiest and most efficient way to chop up the tomatoes is to chop them up into quarters, since they’ll be more easy to distribute later on. (you’ll see why!) As of the garlic, I prefer to squash it with a garlic squasher (I don’t know the name??) It’s the kitchen utencil used for squashing garlic LOL.
Tumblr media
pro tip: squash your chens of garlic so they release more of their juices. Also, it’s easier to do than to chop them up into little squares.
Tumblr media
Take the largest pan you have. Put in some butter and wait for it to melt.
Add the garlic and the chopped proscuitto. (also, I forgot to mention that I buy prechopped proscuitto, it’s from a company named Pavić.) DO NOT fry them for a long time, 2-3 minutes is enough, otherwise, the garlic and the proscuitto will lose its best flavour.
Wait for the pasta to cook.
Add the pasta to the pan, mix it with the proscuitto.
Add your chopped cherry tomatoes. Mix up the mixture, add some olive oil and pepper.
Lastly, add your mozzarella, mix it in. Turn down the stove heat and put on a lid over the stove, so that the mozzarella lightly melts. It shouldn’t melt too much because the proscuitto will mix into large chunks of mozzarella.
If you want some additional flavour, add some rucola or origano. Turn down the stove heat and put a lid over the pan so that the mozzarella lightly melts. It shouldn’t melt too much because the prosciutto will mix into large chunks of mozzarella.
What can I say, bon appetit! Honestly, this is one of my favourite simple and fast recipes and I make it quite often for my family. I just love the mix of flavours. My mom taught me this recipe and many of my friends have asked for it, so I hope other people can enjoy it too, via this blog.
I hope you enjoyed this first post.
XO,
Mia

Vegetables, I can't say how much I love to cook them and eat them as much as I can. I've tried so many kinds of potatoes, leaves, roots, stems; you name it. Veggies are and always will be part of my diet no matter what. One thing that fascinates me about food, in general, is that there will always be something new to try. So when it comes to veggies, there are uncountable unknown ones out there, so there is always room for discoveries, therefore new recipes. I didn't have to walk miles and miles to find a brand new vegetable waiting for me to pick it up and start the fantastic journey of tasting something new. Or better them that, creating a dish with an ingredient I have never tried before. God knows how much I appreciate the feeling of not knowing what to expect from an ingredient.
This new vegetable I’m taking about is the Long Squash.

Have you ever heard of that? Well, I had not.
I was unpretentiously looking for some okra at a local Market near my house when my eyes went straight to this sort of zucchini? Different chayote? I definitely didn't know what vegetable it was. I just thought that it could be related to the pumpkin/squash family, but only because of its name.
I wasn't wrong; long squashes are part of the Curcubitaceae family or gourd family, which includes cucumbers, gourds, melons, squashes and pumpkins (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2017). Also known as Opo squash, it belongs to a subgroup of species called Calabash. These squashes have been planted and consumed for ages, coming primarily from Africa. Over the years, human migration was responsible for the dissemination of this veggie. It is called by many names, that vary depending on where it was cultivated. In China, where it is widely used, the name used is Opo. In the Philipines, Upo, in Korea, Bak and in Japan Yugao. Like any other calabash squashes, the Opo grows during long warm seasons and they need some any kind of support (trellis), so they have enough space to grow vertically, off the ground, preferably with air circulation so they can grow long and straight ( Opo Squash, (n.d.). Retrieved May 26, 2020, from https://specialtyproduce.com/produce/Opo_Squash_396.php) The names and region related are not a coincidence; these squashes are more commonly used in Asian countries. They are normally cooked, and used in curries, stews and soups.
Since I had never tasted it and cooked it, I decided to play safe. Since I love curries and squashes, why not make a curry, or even better, make a green curry, my favourite. I chose to roast the squash first, so its flavours could be enhanced with a smokiness touch. Let’s jump to the recipe of my version of Thai Long Squash green curry, where the squash is the star.
Thai Roasted  Long Squash Green Curry
                                                         Serves 2
                                                    Roasted Squash
Ingredients:
1 medium Long Squash ( aproxm. 500g)
2 tbsp Olive oil
1 tsp Smoked Paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
1. Pre-heat the oven to 400F (200 degrees C) for about 10- 15 min
2. Wash the long squash, cut it lenghtwise and remove the seeds.
3. Cut it in medium dice
4. Toss the dices into a bowl with the olive oil and season them with the Paprika, salt and pepper.
5.Cover a baking tray with parchment paper and set the squash dices all over
6. Season it with the smoked Paprika, salt and pepper
7. Bake it for about 25 min or until it’s cooked and ligthly coloured.
                                                    The  Curry
Serves 2
Ingredients
 1 Roasted Long Squash
1 Tsp canola or avocado oil
4 tbsp green curry paste
1 small onion cut julienne
1 clove of garlic
 1 tsp grated ginger
 1 tsp grated gallangal
1 tsp lemongrass cut brunoise
 1 tbsp palm sugar
1 small red bell pepper cut julienne
1 tsp fish sauce
Half a can of lychees
1 can coconut oil
2 Kaffir leaves
Method
1. Place the oil into the pan together with the green curry paste and let it cook for about 2 min in medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and sweat them.
2. Add the ginger, galangal, lemongrass and palm sugar. Let them release the fragrances and cook for about 5 minutes.
3. Add the red bell pepper, fish sauce and the lychees. Blend them well.
4. Add the can of cocunut, together with the kaffir leaves.
5. Let them curry cook for about 20 min in medium temp.
6. Serve with steamed jasmine rice
                                                        The results
How interesting is to think of a recipe using as the main element an ingredient you’ve never tasted before.
I thought of curry, because, as I said before, it was a safe choice. If this squash had a strong taste, it could blend with the other strong flavours in the curry, but if it had a mild taste, it could also work well  and add texture to this veggie dish.
Tumblr media
Silva S. (photographer).2020 Downtown, ON.
Just looking at it, I had the impression its taste would be similar to Zucchini. When I started to peel it, I could feel a subtle sap coming from the peel itself - similar to chayote, but much less intense.
I wouldn’t say that an aroma comes from it, but at the moment the knife cut its flesh, I could notice some sort of freshness in the air.
In terms of taste, I wanted to compare the taste of it raw and after being cooked, in that case, roasted. I was suprised because it has a very, very mild taste, but at the same time, that is some sort of astringency in its mouthfeel that makes this squash very different than the other I had tasted.
I wouldn’t say it has a remarkable taste of anything, but this characteristic can be very positive if we think about versatility.
If you like Zucchini, you’ll love long squash, and it can work as a substitute.

Its taste after being roasted is surprisingly good, slightly sweet and, obviously adorably smoked.

As for the curry, I would say it was a great choice. It worked very well as a meat substitute. It’s texture enriched the curry’s body and the smokiness coming from the roast added complexity and a touch of bitterness, just in the right amount.
Well, there’s a fun about the tasting. By the time I finished the curry, my husband and I were so hungry and so curious that we started eating at the moment it got ready. The thing is, I forgot to take a picture of the plated dish. Oh my God! When I realised that, I had already finished my plate and my husband was eating for the second time.

Sorry, not the best picture!
Tumblr media
What can I say? It was a huge success. So I invite you to make it and taste it for yourself - and take a picture ;)
I will definitely use long squash in other recipes, I’m sure there are many other great dishes on the way.

CHRISTMAS SAMOSAS
HELLO GOOD MORNING GOOD AFTERNOON GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE 2018 EDITION OF SAMOSA BLOG. LAST YEAR IT WAS OUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO BE MORE PUNCTUAL WITH THE BLOG AND IF WE ARE HONEST WITH YOU WE DONT REALLY THINK WE KEPT THAT RESOLUTION. 2017 WAS A VERY BUSY YEAR FOR US INDEED WE STARTED A NEW INSTAGRAM AND ALSO BOUGHT A PLANT CALLED CHEMIST SO THESE THINGS TAKE UP TIME YOU SEE.
ANYWAY NOW ITS THE NEW YEAR IT IS THE NEW US BUT WHAT BETTER WAY TO START 01-01-2018 THAN LOOKING AT SOME OF THE SAMOSAS WE ATE OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS
SECRET SANTA SAMOSAS
INDIA HAD SECRET SANTA AT WORK AND MUCH TO HER AMAZEMENT SHE GOT THE MOST WONDERFUL GIFT FROM HER GOOD FRIEND AMY SHOUTOUT AMY.
AMY PRINTED OUT THE ‘PERFECT SAMOSA RECIPE’ FROM THE GUARDIAN, WEIGHED OUT ALL OF THE INDIVIDUAL INGREDIENTS FOR IT AND PUT IT ALL IN LITTLE CUTE BAGS WITH THE DATE ON IT FOR INDIA TO MAKE THE SAMOSAS IN. ISNT THIS THE BEST GIFT EVER INDIA JUST BURSTED WITH SAMOSA LOVE AND GRATITUDE.
ANYWAY A DAY LATER INDIA MADE THE SAMOSAS AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME SHE HAS EVER FOLLOWED A RECIPE FROM START TO FINISH WHICH WAS A MONUMENTOUS ACHIEVEMENT IN ITSELF.
THE PROCESS WAS VERY GOOD AND HERE’S THE PHOTOS OF HOW IT WENT
I FIRST MADE THIS MASALA MIX WHICH HAD CINNAMON AND CLOVE AND OTHER SPICES LIKE CHRISTMAS
Tumblr media
AND THEN THE PEAS AND CARROT MIX WITH ONION AND GINGER THAT WAS NICE TOO GOOD SMELLS
Tumblr media
THEN THE MASH I MADE IT MASHY CAUSE I PREFER THAT OVER CHUNKS OF POTATO YOU PROBABLY KNOW THAT ANYWAY FROM THE BLOG
Tumblr media
WACKED IT ALTOGETHER AND THERE WE HAVE IT THE SAMOSA CONTENTS
Tumblr media
THEN IT WAS TIME TO WRAP IT IN THE PASTRY BY THE WAY THIS WAS THE FRIST TIME I HAD EVER MADE PASTRY AS WELL SO I WAS A BIT NERVOUS
ONE THING I AM REALLY BAD AT THOUGH WAS MAKING THEM THE ACTUAL SHAPE OF SAMOSAS SO THEY WERE MORE LIKE TRIANGULAR LUMPS
Tumblr media
NOW IT WAS TIME FOR FRYING AND HERE IS THE END RESULT A LOVELY GOLDEN CRISPY TRIANGLE WITH CUTE SEEDS SHOUTOUT AMY
Tumblr media
I ATE THEM IN FRONT OF CHEWY AND HE LOOKED REALY HAPPY TO SEE ME EATING MY FAVOURITE THING AS YOU CAN SEE HE IS JUST VERY GLAD
Tumblr media
NOW IT WOULD BE UNFAIR FOR ME TO REVIEW MY OWN SAMOSAS SO PARTNER IN CRIME CO-RUNNER OF THE BLOG THE ONE AND ONLY LANA LCL32 LEE WILL BE WRITING THE REVIEW TAKE IT AWAY LANA
HERE WE GO IM TAKING IT AWAY AS I HAD ALREADY LEFT FOR CHRISTMAS INDIA FROZE SOME OF HER FRESH HOMEMADE SAMOSAS SO THAT I COULD TRY THEM AND GIVE A 100% UNBIASED REVIEW SO TODAY WE PUT THE FROZEN SAMOSAS INTO THE OVEN AND BAKED THEM FOR 10-12 MINUTES AT 200 DEGREES CELCIUS. WE NEEDED SOMETHING TO LIFT OUR SPIRITS FROM THE AFTERMATH OF NEW YEARS CELEBRATIONS AND WHAT AN UPLIFTING TREAT THEY WERE.
THE PASTRY WAS NOT TOO THIN BUT ALSO NOT TOO THICK AND BOTH CRISPY YET SOFT AT THE SAME TIME ID SAY THEY WERE COOKED TO PERFECTION. THE SEEDS ALSO ADDED AN EXTRA DIMENSION THE FILLING HAD A REALLY GOOD AMOUNT OF PEAS IN WHICH WAS GREAT BECAUSE THE REFRESHING LITTLE BIRST THAT PEAS BRING TO A SAMOSA IS SECOND TO NONE. THEY WERE NICE AND MASHY WHICH WAS V IMPORTANT AS INDIA ALREADY MENTIONED WE LIKE THE SAMOSAS WHERE THE POTATO IS MASHED BECAUSE IT ADDS THAT NICE MASHY CREAMY TEXTURE. NOW ONTO THE SPICES WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT THE SPICES. THE SAMOSAS CERTAINLY HAD A KICK TO THEM WHICH IS WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN A SAMOSA SO TOP POINTS FOR SPICE LEVEL. THEY ALSO HAD A GOOD HINT OF CINNAMON WHICH BROUGHT THAT CHRISTMAS FEEL THAT WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE V FESTIVE. THATS ABOUT ALL I REMEMBER ABOUT THE SPICES BUT I THINK IVE COVERED EVERYTHING.
OVERALL THESE SAMOSAS LIVED UP TO THEIR NAME AS THE PERFECT SAMOSA ACCORDING TO THE GUARDIAN I WOULD GIVE THEM A SOLID NON BIASED SCORE OF 11/10 PERFECTION ACHIEVED WELL DONE INDIA YOU DID SAMOSA BLOG PROUD.
CARDAMON DAY AFTER BOXING DAY SAMOSA
RIGHT IT WAS THE DAY AFTER THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS AKA THE DAY AFTER BOXING DAY AKA THE DAY AFTER THE DAY AFTER THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS EVE AKA BOXING DAY BOXING DAY
AS TRUE SAMOSA BLOG FANS WILL KNOW INDIA AND LANA ARE BOTH FROM YORKSHIRE, SOUTH AND WEST RESPECTIVELY. IT IS NORTHERN TRADITION THAT WHEN INDIA AND LANA FREQUENT THE NORTH FOR CHRISTMAS THEY HAVE A CURRY. BECAUSE YOU KNOW WEST YORKSHIRE IS THE BEST FOR CURRY.
CARDAMON IS IN BINGLEY AND IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME GOING AND WE WERE THINKING CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE’VE BEEN HERE LANA HAS LIVED THERE FOR 18 YEARS AND NEVER STEPPED FOOT IN THE PLACE BUT IT HAS ONLY BEEN OPEN A FEW YEARS SO THAT MIGHT BE WHY
ANYWAY WE WERE WITH THE LEE’S EATING POPADOMS AND HAVING A REALLY GOOD TIME THINKING ABOUT FOOD AND CURRY AND BEER. WE ORDERED THE SAMOSAS TO SHARE AND THEY ARIVED PROMPTLY AND HERE’S WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE
Tumblr media
WELL FIRST IMPRESSIONS TELL YOU THAT YES THERE IS A GOOD AMOUNT OF SAUCE ISNT THERE AND ALSO A NICE SALAD. THEY DONT LOOK TOO OILY AND ARE OF GOOD SIZE.
THE PASTRY WAS NICE AND CRISP WHICH LANA LIKED. INDIA AND LANA WERE QUITE TORN ON THE INSIDES HOWEVER. INDIA THOUGHT THAT IT WAS QUITE BLAND AND LACKING IN SEASONING. LANA THOUGHT THEY WERE NICE BUT ALSO AGREED ABOUT THE SEASONING. THEY HAD A DECENT AMOUNT OF FILLING AND WERE QUITE HEARTY WHICH ON A COLD EVENING LIKE THAT EVENING IT WAS NEEDED. HOWEVER IT STILL LACKED TASTE WHICH WAS SURPRISING AS THE CURRY WAS SO BANGING THAT WE ARE STILL DREAMING OF IT TODAY IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST CURRIES WE HAVE EVER HAD ON THIS PLANET SO GO TO CARDAMON BINGLEY FOR THE CURRY AND THE BHAJIS BUT MAYBE NOT THE SAMOSAS.
WE FORGOT TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THE SAMOSAS NEAR THE TINSEL SO HERE’S THE PLATE WITH THE SAMOSAS NOT ON IT ANYMORE CAUSE WE ATE THEM NEAR THE TINSEL
Tumblr media

Okay, it’s April and I am writing a blog post about March. I mean it is the usual thing for me to write every month. As for today I feel a bit meh-and-uh, but lets start shall we!
🌸🌸🌸
March 3,
So I spend my Friday going out with my mom, my brother and also my boyfriend. As we went to Gadong Properties Food Court, well it’s been a while. The last time I went here was with my boyfriend, and as for my mom hmm probably years. I tried Laksa Sarawak, expectation; spicy, reality; not, but it was okay.
March 5,
I tried to do “Flatlays” because I have been admiring and following instagram accounts of flatlays related. It’s so nice and simple, yet hard to find the right angle, also lighting most importantly lighting! The background as well. I am a purple kind of girl or probably a bit of pink – okay a lot of pink sheesh. But what I need is a white background and tadaa! I really like it a lot! Tell me what do you think about the pictures!

March 6,
It was cold rainy Monday, which is a good start! I am wearing my favourite sweater today! Not until I reach my class at the IBM knowing that there’s no air conditioner ON. And it was hot hot hot. My class starts at 7:30 AM, waited until 7:45 AM or something. Just got an announcement that our class cancelled. Ah I walk as fast as I could to go back to my car, going home, in my room, standing RIGHT in front of my air conditioner. #Life Took a nap before my next class which is at 4:30 PM. (DO YOU SEE THE GAP?) Had our presentation, it went well – kind of.
March 8,
A gloomy Wednesday, and it’s raining. Not good. Just because my E-business class is so damn cold, adding up with a rainy day? HP – 1000 FREEZING! but hey we got a guest lecture, which I thought that he or she would be a Bruneian lecturer, but actually he’s from Korea. To be honest I am excited to be taught by international lecturer, I mean besides than Bruneian lecturer. Don’t get me wrong, my lecturers are fine, my point is that THATS A FIRST! But I hardly understand what he is trying to say. He did apologised for it in front of the whole class due to his different accent-ish. Overall it was fun.
Bonus point:
Another month for both of us. As for this month we went to Cherry Cafe. My current favourite would be Laksa Sarawak. Not too spicy but I was expecting it to be SUPER spicy (again, me and spicy food). As for him, Buttermilk Chicken of course. Also, to celebrate we bought games! Corpse Party! The anime is ah-mayy-zinng! I’m a gore kind of girl – how meh? Hmm I should probably write about Top 5 all time favourite gore anime or something. Hmm probably.
March 15,
We’re going on a trip! Well it’s not that far away. E-Business Class trip to iCenter. I have always been wanting to know what it is about, I know it’s business related. I NeeD MORE! I am amazed with the talk, the short tour and get to know local entrepreneurs, kind of get the idea of the programs as well. Looking forward to be here again. And I met both co-owners of BruVera! which I was going to have a mini talk session soon. Do visit their website as well! Support local you guys! Click here!
March 18,
GUYS! Guess what! 100 + 100 = 200 followers! Thank you so much! I shall crei in Japanese language! My cat, too excited to receive the notification!
  March 26,
Attending my cousin’s wedding! I’m not so sure with the family structure here – totally lost. I get to meet my grandparents, and grandparents’ siblings and other relatives that I do not know their names but they do know me.  Of course the “when you’re getting married?“, “are you next?” and all those questions. No offence of anything, I find it funny because it’s been a while.
Photo of the day? YES Thanks to my sister for taking the photo. I had fun attending this event, and I do enjoy all of the traditional performance which I forgot to take pictures of it. Nevertheless (Ohh fancy word fancy!), I am happy to see a smile on my mother’s face, to have a good time or talk with my grandmother, as well as her sisters. I took photos of her and grandma, which of course I’m not going to post it here. The event was at UBD, so basically I’m going to school the whole week. hahaha #sobs at the end, why do I have to wear heels again. God that hurts. I used to be into heels, have lots of them, but as for now, sneakers please.
March 29,
My mom decided to go out, with my boyfriend. WAIT, why does that sounds so wrong. hahaha, basically with me and also my siblings as well. We went for Steamboat and Grill, which I forgot the restaurant name thing. But we ate a lot! Like a lot! Thank you ma!
March 30,
Potato Habit! New branch open up near to my University! also my village. So my boyfriend and I bought BBQ flavor and it taste like Maggie’s curry or something, taste familiar. Oh, this is my first time trying Potato Habit. The first branch is somewhere around Times Square.
I want to introduce Garfield! He’s my boyfriend’s cat, which I am going to take care now. So, in total I have thirteen kids! I have lots of black and gray cats, lets add Garfield in. Have to say, it is not easy to introduce Garfield with my other kids, which means Garfield have to stay in my room. You can guess what color Garfield is. And of course I will write a post about him soon enough!
March 31,
We’re going on a trip! 2.0 Well for this one its ‘quite’ far away, kind of. To Kunyit7lodge!! Kem went to UBD for a talk, Entrepreneurship Lecture, one of my class. I was surprised to know that “There’s a homestay at Kampong Ayer?” I – Want – To – Go – There! THEN! My boyfriend have an interview session with Kem today! Have to be honest, I enjoy all the history about the place, about Brunei Darussalam and more, totally love her place! I can’t stop staring outside, I mean LOOK AT THE VIEW!
Here is Kem’s Instagram. Please do check her Page out, also if you are interested to visit simply yes click that Follow button! It would be great for you to get to know about Kampong Ayer with her.

Hello everyone. I haven’t been here for a hot minute due to so many reasons – from the pandemic to anxiety, focusing on Youtube and Instagram, a death in the family, and so many other reasons that will bore you. But hey – I’m back and in a way, I think I should have gone back sooner as writing has always helped me cope with so many things. Especially when I’m writing about something that puts a smile on my face. Case in point, I have a pretty big one on right now as I type about the dining experience I recently had in Bricole.
This restaurant which has been around for over three years now – an eternity in Berlin terms – was able to survive the city’s highly competitive gastronomy scene due to its innovative fine dining menus that offer quite the foodie experience without breaking the bank.
Tucked away in Prenzlauer Berg, Bricole is nestled in a leafy, family-friendly area of the city. Small shops thrive in this area, still on a roll in resisting rampant gentrification. “You don’t need a fancy address to attract those who are really interested with good food,” Bricole’s Fabian Fischer shared over dinner.  “We started with a very relaxed atmosphere where people can laugh. If you don’t have this too formal attitude then people won’t be that intimidated.”
With over 200 different types of wine and menus that range between four to six courses, Bricole can seem pretty intimidating on paper but definitely warm and cosy once you step into the restaurant. Friendly faces paired with the patience to explain what goes into each dish, Bricole’s team is a group of 5 that has gotten closer during the pandemic. A challenge they were able and still surviving from.
Now that the city has allowed people to dine in restaurants again, Bricole has opened up 22 seats plus two more at their bar. Keeping the appropriate distance is – of course – observed. But don’t worry – the dining experience can actually make you forget that the world is really going crazy, even just for a little while.
Quite an unforgettable menu at Bricole
To start off the meal, you get amazingly-soft bread that comes with caramel butter. I have a thing for butter as it just makes absolutely anything better. If only we can smother the world’s problems with butter then utopia is at hand. But alas, we have to make do with having it for food and I guess we can’t really complain there. Good news is that Bricole also sells their smooth and rather fluffy caramel butter. Just make sure to take it out of your fridge at least 10 minutes before consuming it.
The Kohlrabi (German turnip) Dumplings are a summer treat. A light and refreshing start to open up your palate. The salmon profiteroles that come after come with salmon tartare and a dash of cumin. An interesting pairing with textures that will only leave you excited for the first course.
In all my years of writing about lifestyle topics, food among them, it has rarely happened that a dish served as the first course will make such an unforgettable impression. After all, they are usually the front act or a minor band in the music festival that is your dinner. That was not the case for Bricole’s Flamed Salmon.
You get a taste of cooked, slightly smoky salmon through the outer layer of the thick-cut with the juiciness of having it raw. Swimming in a shallow pool of yoghurt dashi and creme, it adds a light tartness to each bite. I was immediately obsessed.
I love myself a great vegetarian or vegan option and Bricole’s chanterelle concoction is pretty up there on my list. You’d think there’s actual bacon inside with the way it was flavoured. The potato creme and leek sauce provide a creaminess on top of the fresh chanterelles that offer a bit of a bite.
The main highlight for me has to be the fish dish. “What? Not the meat?” you say. Why yes, believe it because it’s true. The dish is also my friends Gil and Ute’s favourite. I forgot to ask Xenia who was also with us but I’m pretty sure she enjoyed this one too.
The turbot is prepared with almond creme, coconut, merguez, and beans. It was absolutely divine and was paired with a Krebs 2015 Viogniere. A match made in heaven.
Me loving the turbot doesn’t mean I wasn’t able to appreciate the onglet, though! The rosey-perfection was tenderly served with an intense combination of parsley, chimichurri, and cherries.
For dessert, we were lucky to try the refreshing pavlova with raspberry, citrus, and macadamia. This was followed by a plate of chocolates in varying textures – my favourite was definitely the pralines in the middle with the creamiest cores. Don’t have a sweet tooth? No worries. You pair the desserts with a Sauternes from Chateau Liot and believe me when I say I’d take it over water or coffee on any day.
What you need to know
As I mentioned earlier, Bricole offers menus that go beyond what you pay them for. Four courses will set you back EUR 49, 5 courses are at EUR 59, and you can get 6 courses for EUR 69. Adding 31, 38, and 45 Euros will allow you to pair your dishes with wine. I suggest you splurge a little and go for it as the pairings do elevate each dish.
Also, it’s worth noting that Bricole is the first restaurant I encountered in Berlin that doesn’t charge you for water – both still and sparkling. This leaves you more room for wine, in my opinion.
Since the pandemic is still around, distancing and safety are of utmost importance. Happy to report that the 22 + 2 seats offer ample space in between diners. Since there are not a lot of seats and the restaurant doesn’t do double seating, it’s best to make a reservation.
I know I will as I plan to come back. 😉

**I was a guest at Restaurant Bricole but that does not – in any way – affect my review and opinions expressed in this article.

We’ve all been there, right? You start buying gifts in August, you think you’re all set around the end of November… And then suddenly, it’s almost Christmas and you realise you forgot something. Or even worse: someone. And you don’t really have enough time to go out and look for a big, perfect gift but you do want to give something that is personalised enough that it is clear you really put some effort into it. Now, that’s exactly what I use this last minute gift guide for!
The (semi-) useful & cute
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Basically, if you can give me something that’s both cute ànd useful? Chances are I will love you forever. Or at least I will give you a very tight hug. Either’s possible, at this point 🙂
1. Cute, festive pyjamas: You could even DIY these if you wanted to! There’s so many cute pyjamas that are nice and festive. The best thing? Buying someone PJ’s is a lot safer than buying them, for example, jeans or shirts. And of course: why not add a fun print yourself? (Boohoo)
2. Homemade candles: fun fact, when I was about 12, I once made mini-candles in shells. All we had to do, was melt other candles into shells we had collected on the beach earlier that day. These are slightly more sophisticated than those were, but I mainly just wanted to point out that making your own candles? Or presenting them in such a way that they become a lot more special? Not actually that hard. And it looks special enough, that whomever you’re gifting this to, will be in awe that you went through all that trouble for them! (Floating candles – Tea cup candles)
3. Done up china: everyone needs a mug or a little dish to hold stuff, right? And again: its actually quite easy to turn these into so much more than what they originally were. And, also… Once you’ve got the process down? Just think of all the cute, practical gifts you could create! (Glitter mugs – Ring dish)
4. Adventure journal: if your giftee has a hobby – whether it be reading, traveling, having a huge bucket list, … This is the perfect gift to get them. You bling up an old notebook and turn it into something just for them. And of course, luckily there’s pinterest for eternal inspiration on how to make the ultimate bucket list-book, a reading-log or an adventure journal! (Mod Podge)
5. DIY Soap pump: or, really, anything out of mason jars. Basically, they’re awesome, versatile, and lend themselves to being turned into just about anything. You know, if you’ve just got the patience – and the online how-to 🙂 (Creative Green Living)
The eatable
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Okay, so this category was sort of doubly inspired. On the one hand, there’s a pretty old Brooklyn and Bailey-video that mentioned in my first ever DIY-gifts post, on the other hand, there’s a more recent video by Blair Blogs where she explains how she sets up gift packages. Both of them made me realise (remember?) that these are actually perfect if you’re in a pinch for a Christmas present. My favourite way to do this? I combine a gift card of some sort with a food package. Also known as: how to make it look as if you put way more thought into a gift(card) than you actually did…
1. Tea Mug: as in a mug (which you could personalise, see above!) which is filled with all types of tea and tea-accessories! (Finding Zest)
2. Hot Cocoa basket: because who doesn’t love some hot cocoa around this time of year, right? (Tomkat)
3. Cookie in a Jar: the classic of all food gifts, especially the last couple of years. And the best thing: I usually have all of the things necessary for such a gift? Right in my cabinets! (Very Best Baking)
4. DIY Cocktail Kit: sure, you need to make sure whoever will be receiving this doesn’t get the wrong idea (i.e. you think of alcohol when you think of them). That being said, if you’ve got something of a cocktail aficionado in your gift-giving circle? This could be really fun, and is of course completely adaptable to whatever cocktail(s) they like best! (Distillerista)
5. The pre-packaged: if you’ve got a friend with a bit sweet-tooth or a known love of salty snacks, you can always go even easier: you just give them the ultimate care-package of whatever their favourite snacks are. You just find yourself a nice-looking basket, some tissue paper to have some height-differences and to make it look nicer and, voila, you have yourself a gift!
Oh, and for some tips on how to make these a bit better-looking as you gift them? Again, let me just point you straight towards Blair Lamb, who is pretty darn good at packaging, apparently!
The caring
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Or, more precisely: the packages to help other people care for themselves 🙂
1. Homemade scrubs: few things feel better than your skin just after you’ve scrubbed it. At least – that’s my opinion. And, as a scrub is quite a treatment for your skin, it’s always better to go natural. So why not make it yourself, and gift it to others? (Lemon Scrub – Peppermint Scrub)
2. DIY Sheet Mask: whether you’re giftee is acne prone or needs some extra moisture for their skin, you can quite easy make a mask or specifically a sheet mask yourself. And if you’re already making them, why not create some extra – or just put together a set so they can do it themselves? With instructions, of course! (Hello Glow)
3. Spa basket: why keep it at a homemade scrub, really, if you could go full out and give someone an entire homemade spa basket? From the scrubs to the lotions, there are few things you can’t make at home – especially if you have some essential oils lying around! (Popsugar)
What are some of your favourite last minute gifts that you either have received or have given? Be sure to let me know below, as I’m always good for some extra inspiration! And of course, while you’re here why not go check out the rest of this year’s blogmas, as well as all my other Christmas content?

5 Movie Problems That Kids Today Will Never Understand
Like everything else, movies senility. Special aftermaths inspect worse, favourite slang and fad are left behind, and government and social framework displacement. But sometimes, the terribly central dilemma of a movie becomes so outdated that the cinema itself is no longer relatable to modern-day gatherings. Now are five examples of accurately that, delivered to you in convenient roster model — a format that they are able to never, ever become out-of-date or strange.

Christmas Vacation Is About A Middle-Class Homeowner Pee-pee That He’s Not Getting A Huge Christmas Bonus To Comprise A Pool
The holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation remains a staple of the December basic cable movie pirouette. Its most famous scene is a holiday-pressured Clark Griswold lastly blowing a gasket in front of his family after he opens his highly apprehended Christmas bonus, only to find it’s a subscription to the Jelly of the Month club.
div >
That’s not one insignificant vistum from a simpler period; the whole planned is organized around that instant. Clark is counting on this bonus so he can mask the pay for the purposes of an in-ground fund, which he’s previously purchased in advance to stun their own families. To anyone under the age of 50 read this, suspect a sidekick of yours complaining about this today. How much tendernes could you muster?
Warner Bros. Studios “Sorry about your reserve. I guess you’ll have to just use the community pond, which I too can’t afford.”

Meet The Spider That Subsists By Literally Looking Like Crap
Clark is not drowning in homeowner or student loan obligation, or the costs of referring two kids to college. He’s drowning in a pay of his compel, trying to prematurely compute a pond onto the beautiful live he previously owns. He has a house in suburban Chicago, his wife doesn’t manipulate, and he probably has health insurance and a 401 k. All those sweetened “employment” perks sound like some lost fantasy metropoli of Atlantis to Millennials enrolling the labour force today. And we’re supposed to share his madnes at not getting a good Christmas bonus? It might have been a relatable problem to a lot of parties back in the day, but be said that scene to your median “middle-class” laborer now, and prepare for some reeled seeings, accompanied by the most careful and exhaustive jerk-off flow you have ever seen.

One Hour Photo Is About A Creepy Guy Who … Gazes At All Your Illustrates
One Hour Photo performs Robin Williams as Sy, health professionals photo developer at a local supermarket … and we’ve previously confused our younger readers in several different ways. Sy befriends a family of regular customers, but his carefree professional behaviour revolves baleful when we view him at home, exhaustively browsing every picture their own families has in the past created him.
Fox Searchlight Pictures “Developed? Like, he added some filters? “
This scene still stops across as unsettling today, but digitize any of his actions, and we’d wager person predicting such articles is doing the exact same concept in another tab. You know, moving through every pole on their crush’s Instagram account. Still potentially frightening behavior, but nobody’s gonna make a movie about it.
div >
Today, this photo-obsessive mommy would definitely have an Instagram, and that accounting would almost definitely be public, and random beings would constantly be scrolling through photographs of her kids’ boasting incidents and their family vacations all the time. She’d want the maximum number of people to insure them; that’s the whole level of affixing photos publicly. Really, for modern publics, the only occasion tip-off them off that Sy is a creep is that haircut.
Fox Searchlight Pictures He is clearly the love child of King Joffrey and Flo from Progressive.

In Airheads , A Band Breaks Into A Radio Station To Get Exposure
In the ‘9 0s Comedy Central rerun staple Airheads , an amateur boulder strip referred the Lone Rangers attempts to “make it big” by taking a local radio station hostage and forced into to represent their demo strip. The plan is that an operator will hear the single, indicate them, and notebook them for Lollapalooza, or whatever the 1994 equivalent of Coachella was.
20 th Century Fox And the idea of guys storming into a workplace with guns could be used in a comedy movie and not horror.

Imagine a strap nowadays recollecting the only impediment for entry into the music business is coming their chant played one time on a neighbourhood radio terminal. Hell, depending on how media-savvy the objective is, you might have to explain the whole idea of radio stations to a modern teenager. “It’s like a podcast mixed with Spotify, but ever on. Also there are ads. Ads? Well you consider, firms used to make money on circumstances called adverti-“
There’s likewise the fact that the band owns TWO physical copies of their lyric: a reel-to-reel( which catches barrage) and a cassette tape that they lose and urgently need to track down. Nowadays, anyone would have a digital folder easily accessible on their phone, or a flash drive, or the damn cloud. 40 times of this film would today get abbreviated into a 15 -second scene in which Steve Buscemi re-downloads an email attachment.
20 Century Fox “What studio did you register this in? ” “The laptop in my apartment.”

In Sixteen Candles , Nobody Remembers A Girl’s Birthday
Sixteen Candles heralds from a stage in human history when a person could make it through their part daytime without going 75 Facebook birthday remembrances from acquaintances, family members, and forgotten senior high school relationships with babies you’ve received more occasions than a sunset.
That’s the driving force behind John Hughes’ directorial introduction, wherein Molly Ringwald’s character, Sam, bemoans the fact that everybody in her life forgot her special day. Her Sweet Sixteen happens to fall one day before her sister’s bridal, so everybody in her life is too distracted to convulse an “HBD” her channel. They don’t have Facebook, Google Calendars, extremely basic knowledge of their own flesh and blood, or the ability to read a teenager’s glaring facial cues.
Universal Pictures Props to John Hughes for making a movie with an F-bomb and nudity, yet still drawing a PG rating.
div >
Nowadays, Sam would be instantly cataclysm with “Happy Birthday” messages, beginning at 12:01 a.m. and continuing for three days after her birthday, at which point she would move through them, “like” best available ones, feel bad for not “liking” all of them, then agree and deplete the rest of her daytime politely “liking” the full 200. The 2018 edition of Sixteen Candles would concern Sam checking her email and wondering, “Why am I coming a birthday wish from ‘your friends at O’Hare Long-Term Parking? ‘”

The Ring Is About A Video That Kills You … Unless You Share It
In The Ring , beings succumb seven days after watching a cursed videotape. That is, unless they make a print of the videotape and register it to someone else. But this was in 2002, before the rise of the omnipresent, omnipotent YouTube.
Today, the cursed videotape would get rent immediately — possibly before it even officially came out — and then emulated hundreds of days, inspiring reaction videos, lampoons, and dozens of memes that would be beaten into the anchor within a week.
Dreamworks Pictures ” The Ring , but each time Superintendent Chalmers adds the letter ‘B, ‘ it kills you twice as fast.”
No one would ever succumb from the Ring curse. Well , not for at least a few months, regardless, after which our fleeting scrutiny distances would all change to a clip of a bird that looks like it’s doing the Dougie or something.
Also , no one actually owns a functional VHS player anymore. Unless it was uploaded to YouTube, the strip would claim the well-being of, like, two library technicians and 73 hipsters watching it ironically.
Dreamworks Pictures As if a VHS tape could have subsisted that long without going gobbled in a VCR or videotapeed over with a baseball game.

Plan With Me: June 2018

It’s hard to believe June is here already!
And June marks the anniversary that I truly realised that I was hooked on the Bullet Journal system.
For June I am simple planning techniques to setup for the month ahead. This setup is extremely functional rather than aesthetic. This is because, this month is quite busy for me and I really want to focus on my blog and looking after myself. So my initial setup was designed to help me do that. The only pen I used for this setup was the Teal shade of my favourite papermate ink joy gel pens.
Related: Take a look at this page dedicated to all my favourite bullet journal supplies!
Simple Planning
I’m trying simple planning this month. Usually, I’m always trying to think of a million things at once. Which makes simple planning impossible. But this month I’m attempting to chill out a bit more and just focus on a couple of things!
As you’ll see further down this post, I have not included a habit tracker this month. The first month since starting my Bujo that I haven’t had one!
I decided not to include a habit tracker this month because I want to focus on looking after myself a bit better and sometimes habit tracking can stress me out quite a bit. I tend to really beat myself up if I’m not hitting a habit everyday. So I decided I’d give it a miss this month and start again in July.
I also completely forgot to do a cover page! Great plan with me post this is turning out to be! I’m clearly very scatter brained this month!
Monthly Spread
My first spread for June is my monthly overview, I trialed this layout last month and I really enjoyed it. I like to be able to see the whole month in calendar form; rather than a vertical list down the page. I kept the boxes relatively small because I wanted lots of room around the calendar to add a bunch of lists and notes.
‘Monthly tasks’ is a section I’ve recently been using. In this space I list the tasks that I like to complete, at the very least, once or twice a month. This saves me from having to fit these tasks into weekly and daily spreads all the time and I can just do them at some point when I have time. I recommend giving this idea a go because I find it so helpful and it’s easy to keep track of.
Gratitude & Social Tracker
Next up is my gratitude page. I love this page and have been using it since I started bullet journalling. Each month I write a title of some sort in the middle of the page so I have lots of room around it to add the things I’m grateful for. This month the title is ‘All The Things’.
Then, throughout the month, when I’m particularly grateful for something, I jot it down around the title. Sometimes with a little doodle. The things I write are not always the ‘obvious’ things I’m grateful for; sometimes it’s random little things that have made me smile.
Sometimes it's random little things that have made me smile. Click To Tweet
Cuddles with my cat, ice-cream and sunshine are some of the little things that have made the list in previous months haha.
I really like this page idea because it’s such a good reminder that there is always something to be grateful for. Its nice looking back over all my gratitude logs and having a collection of good memories; that might well of been forgotten if they weren’t on these lists.
On the other side of this spread I added a social media tracker. I’ve never really paid much attention to my social stats but I thought it would be nice to be able to see any progress I make over the next few months.
Especially now my blog is up and running, it’s important for me to know if people are enjoying the content I’m creating. I’ve never used a social media tracker before so it’ll be interesting to see how I get on with it and whether I find it helpful. Doesn’t really fit in with the simple planning thing I’m trying this month haha. But I figured, while I’m keeping the rest of this set up simple, I might as well try something new.
Times To Post & Social Media Schedule
The next spread I created for June is also social media based.
On the left I’ve made a page to keep track of which times are best to post to social media. With some space at the bottom of the page to jot down anything else I learn about social media.
On the right is a social schedule. I intend to fill this out with what content I post to which social media and on what day of the week. I’d like to be more structured and keep to a schedule once I start really pushing my blog out. For example, on one day every week I want to post an inspirational quote or two, on another day I want to share what I’ve been working on lately. Whether that’s an art project, working in my Bujo, stuff I’ve done for this blog, etc. I’m all about being organised so this is a great way for me to keep on target.
Next up is a page I’ve titled ‘media kit notes’. Because, to speak the obvious, I want to take notes on media kits haha. I want to create my own media kit soon, when I’ve actually got some stats to share! Haha. I wanted to scribble ideas on how I want it to look and which stats I want to include.
I will, at some point soon, be offering media kit design services too so keep an eye out for that!
Things To Do For GDPR!
The last spread before getting to the weeklys is a page I made to write down everything I needed to do in preparation for the new GDPR law.
For those of you who don’t know, GDPR is a new law that came into affect May 25th 2018. Its main purpose is to ensure the protection of personal data and to make the collection of personal data transparent and with consent. As a blogger this new law means I needed to update my privacy policy and a whole bunch of other things as well; to make sure this site complies with the new law.
There was a lot of things to do and check up on and my brain just got so frazzled with all the information. I need to make a list (obviously lol) so I could check off what I’d done and what I still needed to do. I don’t have a picture of this page as it contains some of my own personal data.
Weekly Spread
That’s all the pages I’ve included at the begin of this month. The next page is the first weekly of the month. I kept it super simple this month. I literally just drew out 7 boxes, one for every day of the week. Dated each box and added the days of the week. That’s pretty much it.
Like I said at the begin of this post, this month needed to be more functional than decorative. I may add some more decorations as the month goes on; but for now this setup is exactly what I need it to be.
Do you ever just need a month of minimalist planning? Click To Tweet
Do you ever try simple planning?
Do overly decorated planner spreads inspire you or just overwhelm you?
I love to decorate my planner but this month I gave it a miss!
