AUSTIN, Tex. — For much of the last three months, the most popular Joseph R. Biden Jr. website has been a slick little piece of disinformation that is designed to look like the former vice president’s official campaign page, yet is most definitely not pro-Biden.

From top to bottom, the website, JoeBiden.info, breezily mocks the candidate in terms that would warm the heart of any Bernie Sanders supporter: There are GIFs of Mr. Biden touching women and girls, and blurbs about his less-than-liberal policy positions, including his opposition to court-ordered busing in the 1970s and his support for the Iraq war. Pull quotes highlight some of his more famous verbal gaffes, like his description of his future boss, Barack Obama, as “articulate and bright and clean.” The introductory text declares, “Uncle Joe is back and ready to take a hands-on approach to America’s problems!”

All the site says about its creator is buried in the fine print at the bottom of the page. The site, it says, is a political parody built and paid for “BY AN American citizen FOR American citizens,” and not the work of any campaign or political action committee.

There is indeed an American behind the website — that much is unambiguously true. But he is very much a political player, and a Republican one at that. His name is Patrick Mauldin, and he makes videos and other digital content for President Trump’s re-election campaign. Together with his brother Ryan, Mr. Mauldin also runs Vici Media Group, a Republican political consulting firm in Austin whose website opens with the line “We Kick” followed by the image of a donkey — the Democratic Party symbol often known by another, three-letter, name.

The Biden website was intended to help Democrats “face facts,” Mr. Mauldin said in an interview. He kept his name off it because “people tend to dismiss things that they don’t like, especially if it comes from the opposite side,” he said.

Yet in anonymously trying to exploit the fissures within the Democratic ranks — fissures that ran through this past week’s debates — Mr. Mauldin’s website hews far closer to the disinformation spread by Russian trolls in 2016 than typical political messaging. With nothing to indicate its creator’s motives or employer, the website offers a preview of what election experts and national security officials say Americans can expect to be bombarded with for the next year and a half: anonymous and hard-to-trace digital messaging spread by sophisticated political operatives whose aim is to sow discord through deceit. Trolling, that is, as a political strategy.

Mr. Mauldin, who has not been previously identified as the creator of the website, said he had built and paid for it on his own, and not for the Trump campaign. But the campaign knows about the websites, raising the prospect that the president’s re-election effort condoned what is, in essence, a disinformation operation run by one of its own.

Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s communications director, did not directly address that issue, though he said it was “great that talented supporters of President Trump use their time to help his re-election.”

“We appreciate their efforts in their own time with parodies like this that help the cause,” he added.

Inside the campaign, Mr. Mauldin, 30, is seen as a rising star, prized for his mischievous sense of humor and digital know-how, according to two people familiar with the operation. He also appears to be very much on point in his choice of targets: Mr. Biden is the Democrat polling strongest against Mr. Trump and has been repeatedly singled out on Twitter by the president.

Mr. Biden’s campaign knew about the fake website for months, but had not been aware of who was behind it, said T.J. Ducklo, a campaign spokesman. “Imagine our surprise that a site full of obvious disinformation,” he said, “is the handiwork of an operative tied to the Trump campaign.”

Mr. Ducklo sought to place the website firmly in the context of Mr. Trump’s own social media habits — such as tweeting doctored videos — and what he said was the president’s lack of interest in measures to ensure the integrity of American elections.

In addition to Mr. Biden, Mr. Mauldin has anonymously set up faux campaign websites for at least three other Democratic front-runners. “Millionaire Bernie” seeks to tar Mr. Sanders as a greedy socialist; “Elizabeth Warren for Chief” mocks her claim of Native American ancestry; and “Kamala Harris for Arresting the People” highlights her work as a prosecutor who, the site says, “put parents in jail for children skipping school — and laughed about it.”

None, though, has proved as successful as the Biden website. Mr. Mauldin boasted in the interview that he had fooled people into thinking his Biden website was the real campaign page. Some offered to donate money, he said, and others wanted to volunteer.

Mr. Mauldin insisted there was nothing duplicitous about it. “I don’t make any claims on the site to lean one way or the other,” he said, adding, “Facts are not partisan.”

It is buyer beware, and not just for unwitting Democrats. In 2017, a group of Democrats took a page out of the Russian playbook and posed as conservatives to try to divide Republicans in Alabama’s special Senate election, a race narrowly won by a Democrat. And as the 2020 campaign gets underway, election experts say they see signs that Americans from both sides of the political divide are getting ready to do the same. National security officials are also warning that Russia will again try to disrupt the election by spreading disinformation.

Meddling by foreigners is illegal. But trolling or disinformation spread by American citizens is protected by the First Amendment, and if Mr. Mauldin’s work is any guide, Americans may well do a far better job deceiving one another than any Russian troll could hope for.

A Viral Hit

Unlike much of the Russian disinformation, which often has been crude and off-key — remember the Facebook ad promoting Mr. Sanders as a gay-rights superhero? — the faux Biden site has been a viral hit. Mr. Mauldin even started selling mock Biden 2020 T-shirts through the website to capitalize on its success.

From mid-March, when Mr. Mauldin first began promoting the website on Reddit, through the end of May, it had more than 390,000 unique visitors, according to data compiled by SimilarWeb, a firm that analyzes web traffic. Mr. Biden’s official campaign website had about 310,000.

Of the people who found the websites through search engines, 83 percent landed on Mr. Mauldin’s page, according to SimilarWeb. None of it was paid traffic.

The website’s success was not accidental. Mr. Mauldin put it up well before Mr. Biden’s official website and aggressively pushed it out on Reddit, getting clicks and links and exposure. It had a big boost in May when a handful of media outlets — The Daily Callerand CNET, among others — wrote stories about the fake page beating Mr. Biden’s and linked to it. Links from established media websites are weighted heavily by search engines. The New York Times is not linking to Mr. Mauldin’s websites to avoid further boosting them in search rankings.

In recent weeks, as search companies became aware that Mr. Mauldin’s website was fake, it has fallen below the real Biden page. But it remains among the top results, and it already appears to have fooled people.

“I know a lot of Biden supporters were furious when they saw that website,” said David Goldstein, the chief executive of Tovo Labs, a Democratic digital consulting firm in New York. “They suspected other Dem candidates were behind it.”

Then there were the less politically astute. In late April, Mr. Mauldin anonymously took to Reddit to boast that people were confusing his website for the real one. He posted in r/The_Donald, a popular spot for right-wing trolls to trade tips and show off, using the handle NPC_12345.

“How many Democrats can we red pill with my fake Joe Biden site?” Mr. Mauldin wrote in one post.

Another post included messages from duped Democrats. One person wanted Mr. Biden to speak at her son’s school. Another suggested the former vice president look to an old soul group, the Fifth Dimension, for his campaign song.

There were even messages asking Mr. Biden not to criticize other Democrats, Mr. Mauldin said in the interview. “They want it to be all ‘Kumbaya’ with the Democrats.”

He was not having it. “It’s important for everyone to realize aspects of their own side or candidate that maybe they don’t know about or don’t want to look at,” he said.

By “their own side,” Mr. Mauldin meant Democrats. He is not trolling any Republicans.

Trolling, Strategically

For decades, conventional wisdom in politics held that trying to undermine your opponent’s base would only motivate that group to vote against you. But in 2016, Russian disinformation and the Trump team’s own targeting of disenchanted Democrats led many campaign veterans on the left and the right to conclude that sowing dissent inside an opponent’s ranks could work. It worked especially well if the criticism appeared to come from their own side.

With websites like the faux Biden page, “essentially you’re trying to sow chaos and you’re trying to basically do voter suppression,” said Mr. Goldstein, the Democratic consultant.

“You want their supporters to get sad, to get angry, to get turned off from their chosen candidate,” he continued. “The way voters tend to work: They don’t turn off from a candidate and pick up someone else; they turn off from a candidate and turn off politics.”

Mr. Goldstein’s firm, Tovo, tried to prove as much during Alabama’s special Senate election in 2017. With targeted ads, Tovo led conservative Republicans to a website featuring articles by conservatives who opposed the far-right candidate, Roy Moore. Moderate Republicans were directed to a site that suggested they write in a different candidate. The effort relied only on genuine content from conservatives, and it was entirely separate from the Democrats who used Facebook to pose as conservatives.

Tovo later published its findings. It claimed to have driven down moderate Republican turnout by 2.5 percent, and conservative Republican turnout by 4.4 percent.

Unlike Tovo, Mr. Mauldin makes no claims of trying to prove any concepts, and he had no intention of outing himself. When approached by The Times, he argued that he should not be identified because he had not sought the spotlight, and because he feared threats and harassment. He preferred “to work behind the scenes,” he wrote in an email.

Mr. Mauldin registered the Biden site privately so that his name and contact details would not appear in any public searches. But The Times was able to confirm Mr. Mauldin’s identity because the Biden page shared the same Google analytics tags with a number of other active and defunct websites, including the ones he has made for the three other Democratic candidates. Some of those sites that shared the Google tags were registered under Mr. Mauldin’s name.

Sipping a Crown Royal and Coke at a bar in downtown Austin, Mr. Mauldin bore little resemblance to the boasting troll he played on Reddit. He is slight, and has boyish features. He wore his shirt neatly tucked into jeans, and paused to consider questions before answering. When he did not want to answer, he quietly said, “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember” — even when asked about things it was hard to imagine he had forgotten, like what he told the Trump campaign about his websites.

Mr. Mauldin grew up in eastern Texas, and described his political views as “closest to libertarian.” He studied marketing at Texas A&M, and taught himself digital design skills, building on a childhood love of drawing.

He and his brother founded Vici after helping a family friend win a state representative race. Their big break came in June 2016, when the Trump campaign’s digital operation, short of manpower and scrambling, hired Vici.

Mr. Mauldin quickly impressed. His specialty was making the kind of viral videos that riffed on pop culture and were relentlessly pumped out on social media by the Trump campaign. One came after Hillary Clinton dropped a reference to the augmented-reality game Pokémon Go into a speech, urging voters to “Pokemon Go to the polls.” Mr. Mauldin responded with a video that featured Mrs. Clinton as a Pokemon creature players had to catch, providing the kind of tit for tat needed to feed a day of news stories.

In a testimonial on Vici’s website, Brad Parscale, Mr. Trump’s 2016 digital director and now his campaign manager, called Mr. Mauldin “an indispensable part of our digital operation” in the president’s first campaign.

People with ties to the re-election campaign, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because of nondisclosure agreements, said that Mr. Mauldin was brought back on retainer for the 2020 race.

Mr. Mauldin would not discuss specifics of his role with the campaign, citing his own nondisclosure agreement. He was only slightly more talkative about his websites.

Pressed on whether he thought they were deceptive, Mr. Mauldin complained that people put too much emphasis on identity “instead of examining the facts themselves.” He brushed off a question about whether GIFs of Mr. Biden touching women, devoid of any context, represented facts.

The point, Mr. Mauldin said, was to help Democrats see their candidates for who they were — warts and all — and not try to pretend that they all agreed and were in lock step on every issue.

As he sees it now, “there’s a party line and you either toe it or you’re a traitor,” he said, adding that this applied to both Democrats and Republicans.

But weren’t his sites encouraging Democrats to look for traitors?

Mr. Mauldin insisted he was only trying to deliver hard truths. “I mean, they could do it themselves,” he said with a laugh. “But they’re not. That’s the problem.”

Faith, Hope & Charity

At Vatican City, I overheard two American tourists with distinctly southern dialects discussing the beggars asking tourists for change.

“You’d think they would do something about it,” the man said to the woman, who nodded in agreement while admiring her recently purchased crucifix.

Visitors waiting for their designated museum times can sit in the square or stroll through any one of a dozen souvenir shops that sell religious artifacts for exorbitant amounts of money. Things that generally sell on Kijiji or Amazon for next to nothing are priced three or four times higher in the square. And these tourists beside me had opted to give their money to thieves in suites rather than beggars in rags. Interesting. I have to assume they were religious; hence, why the crucifix? True, it could have been a gift for someone else, but even so, it seemed so biblical, me sitting at the Vatican beside two reasonably well-dressed people who were loudly condemning the poor.

I’m not against people with a belief. I’ve known some incredibly kind Christians and some indecent ones too. I’ve dated Jews, Greek Orthodox, Coptics, atheists, and agnostics. Sometimes I meet people who tell me they’re spiritual, and I take that to mean that they believe in a higher power but not an organized religion. The thing about organized religion is how desperate they are to recruit you. I’ve made the mistake a few times of accompanying a friend or boyfriend to their church or temple of choice only to be cross-examined at “friendship hour” afterwards.

I’m always so tempted to say, “I didn’t like the service at all. I thought the little speech in the middle was boring as hell. In the theatre, you’d never be able to get away with so little effort.” In fact, during a few of those boring lectures, I’ve actually wondered what it would be like to review them. Can a person be a homily critic?

Last Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopalian, Reverend Porter spoke on the story of the Good Samaritan in what can only be described as a futile effort to instill any empathy whatsoever. His monotone delivery showed no sign of excitement or interest in the very subject of which he spoke, and his overuse of gesticulation could be better served as choirmaster. I highly recommend any churchgoer avoid this Liturgical season until Easter, when things will hopefully become a bit livelier.

I’ve often made the mistake of expecting more from those who claim to believe. After all, the general consensus (and I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here) is that someone who follows the word of God is most likely going to practice kindness, love, compassion, forgiveness, and understanding.  It’s like a person who boasts of being a great chef and then serves you store-bought pasta with a lumpy Béchamel. “I don’t wish to offend,” you might say, “But do you really expect me to swallow this crap?” If Catholic school taught me anything, it was how rarely one saw the word of God put into practice. Not that everyone was mean, but the “Do unto others…” doctrine wasn’t generously applied. Sadly, more often than not, I’ve often been disappointed by those who claim to be followers of Christ. I think, if Jesus were around today, He’d be disappointed too. Sometimes I imagine Christ with a Twitter account and millions of followers towards whom He’d constantly have to correct in a never-ending stream of tweets like:

“I cannot be held responsible for everything the prophets said,” or “I didn’t even know Leviticus.”

People who have no religious beliefs whatsoever can also be surprisingly horrible. I’m always slightly taken aback when they denounce religion taking the stance that this makes them somehow better than everyone else. I’m easily tricked into thinking they are, then let down when they behave just as badly. These are the people who fight for climate control while driving an SUV. They’re firmly against bullying, then bully you when you disagree with them. I kind of subscribe to the whole: Let he without sin cast the first stone. As advice goes, it’s pretty good.

My belief system runs somewhere between Spiritual Deism with a side of Christianity and a strong desire to be Jewish.  My Jewish boyfriend for seven years reminded me of what it meant to be part of a family, something I always wanted.  I looked forward to Friday Shabbat dinners where we’d gather over brisket and discuss important issues like the colour of the car Bernie was going to buy.

“It’s red.” He’d nonchalantly say while savouring the dinner.

“Red?” his Mother would announce. Fork down, dinner halted. “You’re not a red car sort of guy.”

“What does that mean?” Bernie would ask, oblivious to where this was going.

“You’re a blue car or a gold car-- not red. You’re brother here; he’s a red car driver. Mr. Flashy. Mr. Look-at-Me. But you…you’re definitely not red.”

“I can be flashy!”

“Never!”

“Sure, I can.”

“Not going to happen.”

“There are plenty of times when I’ve been flashy.”

“Name one?”

“Aunt Zelda’s birthday party?”

“Aunt Zelda’s birthday party? What are you talking about?”

“I did that impersonation of Lenny Bruce.”

“Oy vey. Shut up and eat your brisket. And tomorrow, change the colour of your car.”

My first husband’s father, Ezzat, was completely the opposite. A proud Egyptian, he’d grill me over dinner with questions like, “Do I or do I not ALWAYS ask you about your father?” to which I’d cautiously reply, “Well…I wouldn’t say always.” The next thing I knew, I was being called a liar, and he’d refuse to cross the threshold of my home. Once, while I was still suffering from dry sockets after having my wisdom teeth removed, he blended lamb, lentils and carrots together in what can only be described as vomit. It was a lovely gesture, but he was deeply offended when I couldn’t drink/eat it. I offended him a lot. Looking back on old journals, it strikes me now that no fiancé in the history of the world was more disliked. At night I’d pray, “Dear God, what have I done to make everyone hate me?” And all I heard back was, “Who’s everyone?”

Christian or not, it isn’t easy being a good person. When people run a stop sign, then give me the finger when I honk, I’m apoplectic, ruminating all day on what an asshole they are. If someone cheats me or slights me or makes me the subject of a lie, I brood and stew, giving away too much power to those who wish to hurt me. I aspire to be most like my father, who was always kind and courteous. Walking down the street in his later years, he would say hello to everyone and mean it. He was genuinely interested in people. I was grateful that he didn’t seem to notice women blanch when he called them “dear” or, after exchanging pleasantries, would leave someone with a “God bless you.” As his dementia grew worse, he appeared to become more and more beatific. Whether playing monopoly or eating a sandwich, he relished every moment accepting his fate with grace. As I sat beside his hospital bed and watched him pass from this world to the next, I believed he was embraced by something.

I think about my friends who have been oppressed yet still find the ability to forgive, celebrating at Baptist churches with a kind of joy I rarely see anywhere. I have learned a lot from my Black friends, and colleagues about what it means to be, if not Christian, then Christian like. I’m humbled by the love I’ve received when I probably didn’t deserve it.  

Hollywood would have you believe that Christians are either assholes or saints, and regardless of which category you fall into, you’ll suffer in the end. The assholes are hoisted on their own petard, and the saints are martyred.  I have a famous writer friend in L.A. who once said to me, “It was easier to come out as gay than Christian in Los Angeles.”

When I was seven, I saw the movie Song of Bernadette based on the true story of a young girl visited by the Virgin Mary. As a result of her miraculous visitations, Bernadette is rewarded with tuberculosis of the bone, suffers terrible pain and eventually dies—all while being persecuted by a nun who is jealous of her visions. At seven, I put two and two together. If that’s what happens to you when you’re humble and devout, then count me out. The last thing I wanted was for God or Mary or Angels to appear before me. And it wasn’t just Bernadette. Saint Afra, Saint Aggripina, Saint Basilissa, Saint Cecilia, Saint Dymphna, Saint Eurosia, Saint Susanna, Saint Juthwara, Saint Noyala, and Saint Winifred were all decapitated for their faith. To make matters worse, Faith was my middle name. What was my Mother thinking when she saddled me with a Christian moniker?  From what I could tell, since the basis of sainthood appeared to be suffering under horrible circumstances, I was eager to abandon the idea of being good altogether.  As long as I had a little larceny in me, I could stave off being burned at the stake or decapitated.  When misbehaving, my Mother would ask, “Why are you so bad?” And I would answer, “So I don’t become a saint.” I could see no situation in which becoming pious was worth it.

Back in the Vatican museum, I stood beneath the Sistine Chapel ceiling with hordes of other tourists feeling a bit like I was in purgatory waiting for judgment. Guards constantly chastised us to be quiet as we craned our necks to catch a glimpse of God. “There’s so much nudity,” I heard someone say, “God doesn’t look like that.” I was tempted to say, “It’s not a photograph. It’s an interpretation.” But I wisely kept my mouth shut. As I stared at the Delphic Sibyl, I remembered the legend: …born between man and goddess, daughter of sea monsters and an immortal nymph; she became a wandering voice that brought to the ears of men tidings of the future wrapped in dark riddles. It sounds like Sibyl might be pretty busy these days. Finally herded outside, most of the people around me had already put Michelangelo’s frescos out of mind. It was just one more thing to cross off their bucket list. Instead, their attention was now on the line-up at the Vatican pizzeria where for 10 Euros you could have a slice with cheese. 2 more Euros, and you could have water add an extra Euro and you could have it blessed.

As my time to visit St. Peter’s Basilica drew near, I lined up like a good little pilgrim to enter the “Holy Door” and passed into the atrium. I didn’t feel the presence of God there, just tourists who couldn’t resist a good selfie in front of the Pieta. Michelangelo’s sculpture masterpiece conveys the sorrow of the Virgin Mary, her right hand clutching her dead son while her left-hand falls limp at her side, resigned. I was contemplating the gesture when the woman beside me asked her friend,

“What do you suppose it means?”.

“Maybe she dropped her cellphone,” her companion quipped, and they laughed. It echoed shrilly through the chamber like hyenas. I sometimes feel the same way about women as I do about Christians. I expect them to be better and disappointed when they aren’t. I’m sure they feel the same way about me.

Roseanne Conner Has Been Permanently Foreclosed!

It’s been barely one week since actress/comedienne Roseanne Barr ended decades’ worth of comedic goodwill from her “Domestic Goddess” alter ego...all with one fatal tweet.  

And, almost four years after Bill Cosby saw his comedy empire fall – once the floodgates had burst open regarding his past history as a sexual predator – a sad parallel can be drawn.  I would refer people back to my November 2014 op-ed piece entitled “Dr. Huxtable Has Left the Building...”

To be clear:  there are pointed differences between the respective downfalls of both Barr and Cosby.  The latter had managed to keep his sex crimes hush/hush for several decades before his depravity caught up with him...a harbinger of karmic justice for sexual abuse survivors, more than three years before the #MeToo movement arose.

Barr, by contrast, had a history of crude and unflattering public behavior...but nothing, in and of itself, that would ever turn her into a universal pariah.  Her pattern of racist statements didn’t begin until the Obama presidency (coinciding with her own forays into political campaigns...including her 2012 long-shot presidential bid on the Peace & Freedom Party ticket).

What finally did her in: following the successful revival of her classic sitcom (for a de facto tenth season) this past spring, Barr pressed her luck one too many times.  In a May 29 racist slur made by Barr on Twitter, she compared former Obama White House public engagement liaison Valerie Jarrett to an ape:

Within a day, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey officially pulled the plug on the revival’s much-anticipated fall return (which would have been its eleventh season, technically).  Fittingly, Dungey is the first black woman to head a major broadcast network.

Amid a bizarre flurry of alternately apologizing for – and then doubling down on – her hate speech over the next few days, Barr lashed out at a variety of addition public figures, including Chelsea Clinton, George Soros, and a handful of her former costars.  Barr was promptly dropped by her talent agency, ICM Partners.

Predictably, Fox News and legions of Barr’s conservative followers (due to the actress’s – and her character’s – full-throated support of Donald Trump) took to the airwaves, excoriating ABC (and the so-called “liberal media”) for censoring Barr and trampling on her First Amendment rights.  What they fail to acknowledge is that the First Amendment doesn’t allow for anybody to say anything they want, whenever they want, with absolutely no repercussions.

First, let’s dispose of the faux-outrage from the Far Right by establishing why Barr’s tweet was unequivocally racist.  As The Washington Post’s Arica L. Coleman chronicles, European colonists who enslaved Africans openly viewed and maligned people of color as “lustful” creatures by likening them to the primates that inhabited continental Africa.  This has been used as a basis for dehumanizing the worth and personhood of black people in the United States for centuries.

So for Barr to compare Jarrett to a simian – that digs straight to the heart of the systemic, cultural, and social forms of racism that have plagued black Americans for generations.  It’s much different than, say, liberal citizens who’ve joked that George W. Bush looked like a monkey – due to how there has never been any albino species of primate ever linked to a historical institution of oppression.  The only “white ape” from America’s history is the mythical legend of one found within the Tarzan franchise.

That being said, ABC should have realized it was taking a risk when it first signed Roseanne Barr for her sitcom’s revival last year.  The May 29 tweet against Jarrett was nothing new for the fallen star; Barr had a recorded history of making such racist statements in recent years.  

Furthermore, it should have been a warning sign when taking into account how Barr had endorsed Bernie Sanders (a self-described “Democratic socialist”) during the 2016 primaries – but then turned right around and endorsed Donald Trump (a demented fairweather conservative and avowed corporatist).  In terms of ideology and decorum, Sanders and Trump are oceans apart.  The fact that Barr jumped from Sanders to Trump should have been a red flag that she was still unstable (notwithstanding her own volatile public image throughout the 1990s).

This reminds me of the whole Duck Dynasty flap from late-2013.  Remember? – A&E infamously fired the reality show’s patriarch, Phil Robertson, after he’d made anti-gay statements in a GQ interview that year.  When Duck Dynasty fans (and the entire Robertson family itself) threatened to pull out and retaliate, A&E backpedaled and reinstated him.

I addressed this in my January 2014 op-ed entitled “What the Duck, America...?!?!”  Phil Robertson had delivered his anti-LGBT speech in a manner that was devoid of slurs, so it was easier for him (and his supporters) to throw a tantrum and get him his job back.  Roseanne Barr, by contrast, explicitly chose a racial slur that was so blatant and overt that there was no coming back from it.  If Robertson had openly used a term like “cocksuckers” or “faggots” during his interview, I suspect his termination would have stuck – he would have become the pariah back in 2014 that Barr has become this summer.

Nor does ABC itself have clean hands.  While ABC/Disney CEO Bob Iger has condemned Barr after justifying her very public firing by saying:

There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.

...yet, Iger himself has an abominable personal record of cherrypicking his perception of “acceptable” hateful sentiments toward minority groups.  With cognitively-dissonant tactlessness, Iger outwardly pays lip service to people of color and women...but, on the other hand, he is totally willing to throw LGBT people and non-Christians under the bus, as I’d profiled in my op-ed from this past March entitled “Political Indirectness.”

And on top of that:  ABC is *still* trying to milk revenue out of Roseanne itself by reportedly exploring the possibility of creating a Darlene spinoff starring Sara Gilbert, who played the Conners’ rebellious middle child.  They are obviously thinking they can channel the success of The Hogan Family after Valerie Harper exited her self-titled sitcom back in the 1980s.  

Roseanne, however, just won’t work that way.  Harper had only done Valerie for a season-and-a-half before she was pink-slipped due to demanding a pay raise.  Roseanne now has a full decade worth of content and history behind it.  Also, Sara Gilbert is still needed as a sane and reasonable voice to balance out the toxic neofeminism (from some of her fellow cohosts) on her current CBS daytime gabfest, The Talk (even though The Talk and Roseanne do have their respective studios on the same backlot).

I understand the desire to keep the 200+ cast/crew members employed in the wake of Barr’s racist meltdown.  But ABC could still make a concerted effort to find all of them new jobs on other ABC Studios (or ancillary) productions.  I seriously doubt that any casting director or showrunner will hold it against any of Barr’s castmates or the below-the-line crew via some stigma of “guilt-by-association.”   If anything, other series would have nothing but sympathy for any Roseanne refugees who want to get back to work.

The final piece of irony in all of this is exactly how far Barr herself has fallen.  In her sitcom’s original inception, she portrayed Roseanne Conner, a blue-collar suburban Illinois worker and mother whose dysfunctional lower middle-class family was unlike any clan ever portrayed before on an American primetime comedy.  Her TV husband, John Goodman’s lovable-but-equally-assertive Dan, balanced her out with fantastic chemistry.

As Roseanne and Dan grappled with living from paycheck to paycheck – hopping from one crummy and thankless job to the next – they had their hands full raising their three children: oldest daughter, Becky (Lecy Goranson), a brainy overachiever with a sharp tongue; middle daughter, Darlene (Gilbert), a bratty tomboy with even more classic retorts than Becky; and youngest son, D.J. (Michael Fishman), a rambunctious mischief-maker who was clearly Mama Conner’s favorite.

Americans dealt with the recession of the early-1990s, and, likewise, the Conners’ own fortunes ebbed-and-flowed.  Dan – originally a drywell contractor – went into business for himself as a bike shop owner...but his establishment folded after two years.  Roseanne, meanwhile, floated from factory worker to beauty salon sweeper to restaurant server to finally opening her own successful restaurant in 1992 (shortly after Dan’s bike shop went belly up).  Since, when the show returned for Season 10 this past spring, Roseanne Conner was now a disabled Uber driver, it can only be assumed that The Lunch Box (her and Jackie’s loose meat sandwich diner) must have gone belly up at some point (probably during The Great Recession).

Always present during the show’s original run was the terrific Laurie Metcalf as Roseanne’s hapless pushover of a younger sister, Jackie.  Becky and Darlene began dating (and, eventually, each married) a set of brothers: bad boy Mark (the late Glenn Quinn) and introverted David (Johnny Galecki, who has now skyrocketed to success as Leonard on The Big Bang Theory).  D.J.’s character was also fleshed out, as the years went on.

The Conners were always crass, outspoken, and constantly fighting an uphill battle of remaining just above the poverty line.  So many Americans related to them because a lot of our own struggles were their struggles.  Offscreen, Barr battled for creative control with a turntable of showrunners – but ultimately, she secured the top decision-making power and vaulted her sitcom to #1 in the Nielsens.

When I talk about “the irony” of Barr’s present-day fall, I’m referring to its fluctuating content.  Seasons 4 and 5 were the strongest of Roseanne, in my humble opinion – and the ratings reflected that popular sentiment (in fact, many of the fans even prefer the sitcom’s earliest three seasons; I actually view Seasons 1 through 3 as having many significant weak spots, in hindsight).  But then, around Season 6 (coinciding with Barr’s highly-publicized divorce from actor Tom Arnold), Roseanne’s quality began to take a nosedive.

The Roseanne Conner character had always made strong statements against the patriarchy while opposing male domination in her daily life.  But she had always done it in an endearing, authentic way.  By 1993, her lead character suddenly shifted from being lovably-sarcastic and sympathetically-cantankerous to just being outright mean.  Her misandry (i.e. contempt for males) became pronounced and gratuitous in virtually every episode.  Dan’s character became wildly uneven – oscillating between charismatic assertiveness, psychotic temperamental escapades, and the meekness of a stereotypically-“whipped” husband.

There was no longer any consistency to Roseanne and Dan’s marital interactions.  Every episode eventually became written to essentially boost Barr’s ego...rather than organically developing the characters or advancing their storylines.  

It’s ironic, when you think about it, seeing how one of Roseanne’s most critically-acclaimed episodes aired in Season 7 and dealt with D.J. being afraid to kiss Geena, his black female classmate, in a school play.  Upon returning after two decades off the air, in the Season 10 revival it’s revealed that D.J. actually went on to marry Geena herself...and they have a daughter named Mary (presumably named after Nana Mary, played by the late Shelley Winters) together.  And Roseanne Conner absolutely adores her youngest new granddaughter.  Just more bittersweet poetic irony...

Still, ABC remained mum – and reaped the advertising revenue from Roseanne Conner’s new persona of toxic misandry.  It was a #1 show, after all.  Even when it gradually began bleeding viewers over the course of Seasons 6 through 9, it still delivered solid ratings.  This was likely a consequence of nostalgia, viewer loyalty, and women in the viewing audience who’d latched onto a lead female character who (usually) didn’t take crap from anybody.  Hell, when Goranson left the show during its fifth season, Roseanne got away with recasting the role of Becky (introducing audiences to Sarah Chalke, later of Scrubs fame).  When Barr got pregnant in real-life, the birth of the Conners’ fourth child – their son, Jerry – was written into the series.

But for all of those years, ABC never complained...because male-bashing has been fairly “fashionable” within mainstream culture for the past few decades.  It took Barr making a reprehensible and indefensible racial slur for her to finally be put in her place.

Another reason why I’m skeptical of a Darlene spinoff: the Season 10 finale (apparently, the de facto series finale), which aired on May 22 (less than two weeks ago!), actually wrapped up the show quite nicely.  The Conners’ basement flooded, and it looked as though they were about to lose everything.  Then, a state of emergency was declared – empowering the Conners through an allocation of FEMA dollars that not only allowed them to repair their house but also provided enough money for Roseanne Conner to have her badly-needed knee surgery.  The final scene is of the extended Conner family ready to pig out on Roseanne’s favorite foods the night before her surgery takes place.

This would be a fitting spot to end the series for good.  It was certainly superior to the much-maligned “Lottery Season” (Season 9) that ended the show’s original run, which was revealed to be part of a fictitious short novel that Roseanne Conner had written.

When the Roseanne revival (Season 10) was first announced back in April of last year, I had my own extensive wish-list for it.  By and large, I think they did an excellent job (particularly memorable was the scene where “Grammy Rose” proceeded to “waterboard” mouthy granddaughter Harris – portrayed by newcomer Emma Kenney – in the kitchen sink).  I was looking forward to Season 11.  It’s beyond disgusting how Barr couldn’t learn how to hold her tongue and enjoy a generation of newfound success.

Still, while I find the ABC cancellation to be justified, I do think it’s an overreaction for networks such as CMT, The Paramount Network, TV Land, and Hulu to yank Roseanne’s syndicated reruns.  I thought the exact same thing when all syndicated episodes of The Cosby Show were unceremoniously pulled back in 2014 and 2015.  If the syndication revenue falls due to viewer backlash, *THEN* rescinding the syndicated runs makes sense.  But let us enjoy all the happy memories we have of Roseanne.  And let the cast enjoy the money from any residuals if there is indeed an audience left for the old episodes.  And yes, I still have the exact same sentiments about The Cosby Show.

To be clear, there have been much different circumstances and contexts surrounding the deletion of both Roseanne and The Cosby Show from the airwaves.  But the former “Domestic Goddess” deserves nothing but scorn for torpedoing her own career after a downslide that has been a protracted slow burn.

And, much like Bill Cosby, Roseanne Barr has no one but herself to blame for it.

"Elisha Christian on 'Columbus' and 'Everything Sucks!'": The Spirit Award-nominated cinematographer chats with me about his acclaimed work on Kogonada's 2017 film and this year's acclaimed Netflix series.

“[Indie Outlook:] How did you and Kogonada develop the extraordinary shot of Jin (John Cho) and Eleanor (Parker Posey), framing them in a mirror in a way that gives us a sense of their history. We feel as if we are peering into a reflection of their past.’ [Christian:] ‘That scene took place in the same inn where Jin was staying. There were only four or five guest rooms in the whole inn, and we had our pick of which room we wanted to shoot in. That location is so visually interesting — you could shoot a whole movie there. When we saw the mirrors, we knew where we wanted to place the camera, though my AC couldn’t even stand next to it to pull focus. She had to sit underneath the camera while reaching up above her head to pull focus because the space was so slim. We even had to pull everything off the sides of the camera in order to fit in that tiny area without catching it in a reflection. We saw that if John walks out and stops at a certain point after Eleanor basically kicks him out, he could turn back to her and we’d be able to frame them both in an interesting way. It was definitely a dance. I remember that we were running behind that night. It took a while to set up the shot and get it ready, and we probably shot about 7 or 8 takes of it. We had two other shots planned in the scene, but when we got the take that Kogonada wanted, he said, ‘We don’t need the other shots.’ That’s a ballsy decision, considering the length of the scene. It’s decisions like these that made the movie better.’”

"Peak superhero? Not even close: How one movie genre became the guiding myth of neoliberalism": Brilliant commentary from Salon's Keith A. Spencer.

“Obversely, this is precisely how politics functions in neoliberalism: Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were presented as branded superheroes, who believed they knew what was best for us, and sought to install their elite wonks to enact their benevolent (to them) policies. There’s a relatively two-dimensional view of the world at work: there are good and bad people; they are generally born that way and seldom change. The state in neoliberalism and superhero movies is almost entirely devoted to oppression and surveillance. If the state overreaches, heroes must fix its excesses; if it fails to protect its citizenry, heroes must make up for its shortcomings. In either case, its social welfare function is invisible: because people are innately good or evil, there are no social workers or teachers or other welfare-state employees whose duties might prevent villainy (or supervillainy) through social work. Superheroes are, by definition, more powerful and more important than the state. More importantly, the superheroes’ work may save lives, but it never inherently changes the relationships of production: If the people are poor, they’re likely to stay poor. They don’t participate in redistributive politics except to attack the sort of universally detested social relationships about which there is broad consensus — for instance, slavery. Superheroes can’t and won’t save the middle class; many of them are rich anyway and stand to benefit from the kinds of inherent economic injustices that, say, Bernie Sanders or Jeremy Corbyn fight against.”

“No one is sure what the moral rules are. The Ministry of Culture won’t write them down. At least the Hays Code in classic Hollywood had 11 clear don’ts. Specific rules can be subverted. But Turkey’s veto power is capricious and vague. Filmmakers, especially documentary filmmakers telling unflattering stories about modern Turkey, could spend years on a movie that can’t be shown. Unpredictability pressures artists to play it safe. Some hire lawyers to help them guess whether their work might be rejected, and if so, hunt for foreign producers willing to take a controlling stake as international films don’t require a certificate yet. But as Saudi Arabia opens its first movie theater in 30 years with a screening of ‘Black Panther’—imagine women who finally got the right to drive this year beholding the Dora Milaje—Turkish people are alarmed that their government, which just disrupted the last major dissenting newspaper chain, threatened people over their footage of Taksim Square, intermittently shut off YouTube and Twitter, and is poised to ban teaching evolution in schools, is making it hard to share their stories with the outside world. Over a bottle of wine, a director sighed as she pointed toward the west, ‘News comes one way.’ The impact was everywhere. ‘I can say that there are less political movies than before,’ said current festival director Kerem Ayan on a group boat trip circling the Bosporus River. ‘But cinema is very creative. Everybody finds a different way to express what they want.’”

“I had never done anything that graphic or that sexual before ‘The Cooler.’ I’d taken my clothes off, but that’s different. And it was my adorable wife who finally said, ‘When you talk about it, it sounds like you’re planning to fail. If you don’t want to do these sex scenes, you should call the director and tell him you don’t want to do them. If you do want to do them, you better start thinking about how to make them great.’ It was a fabulous wake-up call. I married well. So I started to look at the sex scenes like any other scene—as an acting exercise. What’s different at the end of the scene than at the beginning? What happened? What’s the objective? What transpired? Where’s the moment where something changed the plot even though we’re just rolling around in bed? And to Wayne’s credit, I said, ‘I can’t understand the scene. I’m having trouble here. What happens here?’ And we talked about one or two scenes and he said, “You know what, you’re right. I can’t find it either.” And he cut them. He cut the scenes. Which is sort of the essence of art, I think: If you can cut it and still tell your story, then you have to cut it. I was shy but Maria didn’t care. She said, ‘I’m an old hippie. This is nothing.’”

"50 Years Ago, a White Woman Touching a Black Man on TV Caused a National Commotion": Petula Clark and Harry Belafonte chat with Vanity Fair's Donald Liebenson about the moment that erupted into an inadvertent scandal.

“For his part, Belafonte thought there had just been a technical glitch. He did not think the touch was problematic: ‘Quite the contrary,’ he says. ‘I was quite pleased. That song, if I remember, was the last thing we shot. There was an enormous sense of release that we had pulled this off without a hitch. It was one guy—Doyle Lott—who said we had to re-shoot what we had just done. We were nonplussed as to what was the problem.’ NBC, alerted to the controversy, called Binder to say the network would back him (‘That was a great phone call to get,’ he says). With that, Binder and Wolff rushed to the studio basement to confront the editor and order him to keep the take where Clark touched Belafonte’s arm—and to erase the others so they could not be used in the broadcast. Somehow—Binder doesn’t recall what did it—word of the controversy got out early, resulting in breathless pre-broadcast news coverage. ‘Incident at TV Taping Irks Belafonte,’ said a March 7 headline in ‘The New York Times.’ The article quoted a statement from White: ‘If there was any incident . . . it resulted solely from the reaction of a single individual and by no means reflects the Plymouth Division’s attitude or policy on such matters.’ Lott’s Detroit office also issued a statement: ‘I was tired. I over-reacted to the staging, not to any feeling of discrimination.’ Binder remembers hearing that Belafonte was about to tell America to boycott Plymouth on ‘The Tonight Show’; he called the singer to tell him it wasn’t the car company’s fault, and reminded Belafonte of his conversation with White. On March 10, the ‘Times’ reported that Lott had been ‘relieved of his responsibilities.’”
