Finale for 2005! Again, the style shift was "toony/anime bad, pro = realism only" which was a trend at the time, however thats not true! Any style at ANY time is okay! Back then, I was pressured into thinking that I was only "worth it" if I tried for hyper realism AND did everything from memory, 0% references. ALSO NOT TRUE! Use photo/anatomy references no matter HOW GOOD or bad you are. Pro animators still use references, pro comic artists use references, STOP TELLING PEOPLE THAT REFERENCES ARE BAD. Stop telling yourself that too. All you're doing by beating yourself up over pulling up photos to study anatomy etc is creating low quality work and youre honestly wasting your efforts + not learning anything. You wont "magically figure it out". The human brain NEEDS a visual guide to understand how an object is constructed.

Also stop telling yourself that if you study anatomy that you HAVE to draw realism. No! Doing studies doesnt mean you "cant have a cartoon style". You're using those to learn "how to assemble" a skeleton, muscles, how an animal/human moves, and from there you can run wild with stylized lineart and caracatures/exaggerations. You want an example of this?? LOOK UP ALL THE ANIMATIONS JAMES BAXTER HAS MADE! Look at the wide variety of styles he has drawn! (Spirit, several Disney characters, Steven Universe *to name a few*) Anatomy and lines of motion/joints is NOT equal to style. SU still moves like a real human despite being that "CalArts" style! Also look up animators like Aaron Blaise and look at the variety of things he has worked on or Don Bluth (who makes very toony exaggerated animals!). Side note: A lot of these big animators have free tutorials they post to their social medias/websites and also very affordable/cheap online "classes" that you can take. Its super cool that they take time to teach new generations how to create things 🧡

Lastly- a reminder to NEVER use other people's drawings as your "anatomy" references. Every person draws things differently and even the "best"/most seasoned artist out there can still make mistakes. Everyone, including myself, will have something that they struggle with whether thats poses, perspective, lines of action, or just whatever. Anatomy comes from the physical real world. STYLE comes from the made up world. By using someone's art as your hard copy "anatomy reference", you will only repeat what flaws they have made. There are tooooons of stock photos on the internet these days. Use DeviantArt, use Shutterstock, there are just so many places to find stock photos of any kind! I even dump a lot of random photos on my DA for stock use. I upload higher quality stock photos to a site/app called Foap, but that doesnt mean that my lower resolution photos on DA arent good for drawing references! They just wouldnt be the best for photomanipulation or graphic design use. I really dont upload them with the intent of being useful for photo projects- I really post them because they're valuable drawing references. Head over to my linktree to find my links for those!

"But what about drawing tutorials?" Tutorials are a guide to show you the technique for how to build something. They are designed to help you keep proportions and learn how to use basic shapes to break up photos. These are good resources to have on hand and to research when you need to learn how to put something together. Again, there are different kinds of resources that are all parts of how an illustration is made. Each type is useful for its specific topic. Stop thinking theyre all the same and stop telling yourself that "everything" resource is for "anatomy only". Hunt down the appropriate resources for whatever it is you need to do!

"What about tracing? Does that help?"

Not really, no. Why? Because you arent doing the work. Its that simple. Tracing the lines of someone's finished art doesnt teach you how to draw something from the ground up. You didnt "make" anything- you just traced it. Guess what else can trace stuff and make an outline? A computer! There is no effort, no skill, no learning of any kind involved. Re-drawing (physically drawing from scratch) on the other hand DOES teach you how to physically create that thing. Just be sure to NOT post your redraw studies or claim them as your own art. While yes, you did draw that copy, it is still just that- a copy, a replica, a duplicate of the original. Only post things that you DID NOT copy from someone else UNLESS its one of those "Draw this in your style" challenges where the whole purpose is for you to copy what the artist drew. DTIYS contests are always announced as such and you will always see the person announcing who is hosting that challenge. The only other time you want to upload a "copy" is redraws of your old art and or screenshot redraws.

Remember, if you want to take drawing commissions, NEVER copy another artist just to undersell them. What does this mean? If someone comes to you and says "can you draw this for me in so and so's style because you're cheaper than them" or says "can you copy this person's drawing but make it my character instead"- THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS NO! Tell them that if they want art by that artist, they need to buy from that artist. If they want to buy from YOU, then they will get YOUR style etc. Its not fair to copycat someone just because youre cheaper. Yes, it might make you popular, but your following/fan base/popularity isnt created off of your own hard work. Instead, you gained a following at the expense of somebody else and people are only there for your copies. "But copying people pays the bills"- yeah well I've got news for you... SO DOES MAKING YOUR OWN ART. Dont be "that person". Think of it like copying someone elses homework- you may have passed the class, sure, but you didnt learn anything and if someone asks you about it later, you wont know any of the answers because you never actually did any of the work yourself! "But its hard"- no duh. Life is hard. Work is hard. Learning is hard. Welcome to the real world where nothing is easy. Anybody remember that Magic Broom short on Fantasia? Mickey didnt want to do the chores, so he used magic to get the brooms to do the chores for him. The moral of that story was real life doesnt come with shortcuts and in the end, you will need to do that work anyway.

honestly i find this to be a difficult question. im old enough to remember when internet wasnt a thing. so when it became a thing, there were basically always webcomics. and it was just kind of like...a normal thing to be read on the internet just as much as anything else. i never saw it as a lesser medium as some ppl have experienced. it was just always there along with the internet so it always felt natural to me to read them if they seemed interesting. that being said, if i had to pick the first webcomic that ever made me stick around for a long time, it was Bleedman's Powerpuff Girls D fancomic. Besides the fact it was super popular at the time, i just thought it was really different. like the art popped a lot more than other comics at the time (that i knew of at least), the story was way less comedy more actually serious material, and just in general i enjoyed the story telling. https://www.snafu-comics.com/swmseries/powerpuffgirls/

I started reading webcomics back in the early 2000’s so I was consuming everything that was available, but I think the first one that actually made me think “I want my art to be like that” was The Meek https://www.meekcomic.com/ Up until that point I read mostly video game comics and they were funny but not inspiring me to make a comic. The Meek was gorgeous and interesting in a way that I hadn’t seen before.

Acid Reflux (http://acidreflux.ficwad.com/) was the first webcomic I really got into back in 2000. The humor was a great blend of anime and light fantasy, which is definitely my happy place. The forum/IRC communities were big for the time too (and of course there was no social media back then outside of what people hosted themselves). When I started my own comic, one of my goals was to have a community like that.

The first webcomic I got into was Looking for Group https://www.lfg.co/. I'm a huge sucker for medieval settings, so my influences revolve around core fantasy, like Legend of Zelda and Lord of the Rings, but I also LOVE for my fantasy to not be taken as seriously with a good sense of humor, like LFG, Discworld, Dungeons and Dragons, and even The Adventure Zone. Seeing them create a graphic novel was sort of a catalyst for me deciding to make my own. I hope I do well for myself to contribute to the unique fantasy/comedy genre!(edited)

The first webcomic I ever read was Michelle Phan’s Helios Femina, Just cause I was a fan of her makeup tutorials. I started reading it but stopped and then when I started making my own webcomics last year I got into it again, but the story turned out to be not my thing, but freaking gorgeous art. Then I got into Planet Ace, Shiori, and webtoons like UnOrdinary and Spaceboy, and The Villain. Hey, this is a little bit personal but considering you are the only she/they person I have vague acquaintance of.

Ok do she/they pronouns mean that you are comfortable with people using both for you and you don't fully identify as female?

Because it's been on my mind a lot recently, I never feel fully feminine but I never feel masculine and when one of my friends came out as nb it just woke something up in me that I cant describe other than a feeling of my mind accepting it before I could fully process it that I like people using they as well as she and i dont know what I'm even doing at this point.

I always loved when people called me they and idk why I didn't realise until recently, plus I dont look or act particularly femine but I also do and it's weird.

You're not bothering me at all :) I started using 'they' around this time last year mostly because I was curious about how it would make me feel and after trying it out for a while I realised that I like it a lot! I still also use 'she' and it doesn't feel wrong, but it's like you said - I also don't always feel entirely feminine.

It's nice, having the option to choose a prounoun that doesn't come with a feminine view of a person but also isn't masculine (because that's something I'm not). German lacks that which sucks when I have a day where it makes me feel a little.. hmm not really sad, but I'm not euphoric about being referred to as she sometimes but there's nothing else I can or want to use in German. (Okay sorry, now I'm the one rambling.)

But yeah for me using she/they pronouns started out as wanting to try it because I saw other people using them and.. do you know the feeling when you're watching a football game and you're watching from the sideline but kinda wish you were out there too? That's how seeing other people using she and they. i dont really have the highest hopes for making the goal i had for school odds are i fail a class, do poorly in another or two, and maybe get by decently in one of them i really regret doing online courses since it always goes back to “oh i missed that because it wasn’t posted,” “oh the professors don’t use the news alert system when new stuff is added with a concise explanation of what I need to do in that post blurb that’s 3500 words of bs,” “oh i didnt realize this awkward and uncomfortable ‘post your personal assignments here that are about yourself so a bunch of strangers can also read and criticize it’ was required,” “the syllabus is written out of order, it’s messy and has a bunch of color code usage that’s never explained and makes reading it harder and, oh, they want me to print it out too bad i dont have a fucking printer and looking at it makes me want to throw up since it’s literally just everything put up on a page and i just start panicking because its so much stuff and it immediately overwhelms me” i also fuckin hate the professors who’ll say like “if you’re here just to get a degree you’re in the wrong place” b/c it’s like college costs a lot of fuckin money and you can bet your ass the only reason im here is to get a degree so i can eventually have a job that lets me be financially stable. trying to say “oh it’s just for funtime education” is bullshit when it costs what it does and isn’t even accessible to everyone from the get-go. i could learn the exact same shit for free from a fucking library and the internet, and talk to people i know if i have questions about material. but that doesn’t give me the piece of paper i need. idk i wish there was more of a “oh i can go do this and be fine financially” rather than needing to spend years in a university because i really hate it. i *wish* i hadn’t fucked up before and been as suicidal and couldve got through it *before* its used as a “yea we can’t have you here cuz you dropped out in the past” *even when* it’s an associated school with the one i *did* drop out of and they told me they *would* re-accept me when i was healthier. no im not a great student. i get overwhelmed really easily, i stress out over everything too much, i break down if i miss one assignment. i dont do well on the shit i actually try really hard at. i dont participate in class because it’s a terrifying experience to be called a fucking “idiot” again by a professor (ty philosopher dickhead at uwgb im gonna fucking punch you if i ever see you) i *forget* about assignments a *lot* and *yes* that’s a *my* problem thing but it’s something so extremely difficult to work around without having someone telling me about it, or just having a visible schedule written down about what’s due on a front page that always pops up. which i mean yeah it’s extra work i guess for the professor to just copy paste some info that’d really help me out, and no i dont have this issue as much in a traditional school b/c i actually *go* to the classes to sit in and be reminded through that. and yea im probly gonna fail out unless the other university sighs and says “well she did try and it was online” and ngl i probably would be *fine* in a regular classroom oriented thing *now* it’s more organized and there’s a schedule i can keep to and get into and when i get *into* a schedule i stick to it 100% b/c i the most fucking difficult things for me to do, especially publicly. i *regret* online schooling. i didnt realize how much i dont work with it until i thought about it this year. i get overwhelmed. i get stressed. i get depressed. i get suicidal. i get hopeless. i feel useless. i didnt realize i *need* to actually *go* to a class because it helps with the isolation i put myself in. because i straight up actually understand shit when someone is actually explaining it to me and not just handing me a textbook and saying “read it that’s it that’s the entire class, but oh, write an informed paper structured off what you read and if you dont understand the material well go fuck yourself i guess.” and in actually *going* there to a physical room it becomes easier to do things like homework and assignments *because i can walk over to the library*. what *really* shit on my previous school ability was like i was overwhelmed (we *just* moved to a *completely* different state and environment, i *just* had a series of panic attacks in italy b/c i thought i could handle it on my own) and the first school didn’t have a/c and it was fucking 101 outside every day and i dont do well in heat, and by that, i mean i hyperventilate, i get dizzy, i get lightheaded, i get emotional and frightened and stressed and cant sleep. the professor who asked if we read the chapter (I DID) and then pointed at me to explain what i read (I DIDNT FUCKING UNDERSTAND IT), and when i finished he just laughed and told me to sit down and pretty much called me an idiot in front of everyone and i started crying. (i also got a 0 so i failed the reading since he didnt believe i read it). at *that* school there were no therapy or counseling or offers like that. the art building made me cry and feel unsafe (i couldnt control it), having to walk *all* the way back to my dorm building at 12AM b/c that’s when my one class ended was *terrifying* then in a different school it was just i had a class that made me physically uncomfortable to be in. i *hated* being in the freshman course for feminism so much. not b/c i hate the material, but i felt so “other” and uncomfortable b/c im a trans woman being asked about my male perspective on shit and i just. i remember leaving because i just felt upset and depressed and i couldn’t get over the really bad dysphoria i kept having in that class (the professor there was the reason i went to counseling on campus, she’s the one who referred me to it in the first place). on top of that, the dorm i was told id be getting was a fucking lie. i was supposed to have one or 0 roommates. i got 5 roommates. beds didn’t fit me b/c of my height (i slept with the back of my feet on an iron bar). the food was straight fucking garbage. one of my roommates just randomly touched me all the time. hugged me, put arms around my neck, *kissed my cheek*. another was always drunk and loud. another talked about making bombs incessantly. one of them seemed actually concerned about me and he came in once or twice when i was face down on my bed just not moving b/c of therapy sessions and talked to me once or twice to make sure i was still alive. friday mornings in winter id be up at 5AM, trying to get ready without waking any of the 5 other people, then walk outside with no access to breakfast/coffee/anything (b/c too early) to get to a class across and off the campus i had to walk to (and when snow was present my feet were numb b/c of all the water that got into my shoes). and then there was the legit getting 4 hours of sleep if that a week. eating basically nothing. extremely suicidal and getting to the point where i was having days where i legitimately could not discern what was real and wasn’t. and then i left ‘cuz my other option was to be hospitalized. from there its just been attempts at online schools. which i already tiraded about above. i mean fuck id be happy if i *could* just go work in retail and make a decent wage and not have to work every waking hour of my life to make it work. like. i *wish* i was lucky enough to be one of those “i had no degree but x really liked my resume” stories i always read about. i *wish* writing and publishing a book was considered and *was* a viable career option without needing to get really fucking lucky. im passionate about writing fiction, but in order to do that professionally, i need a 4 year degree from an institution. i can technically publish something, but if no one ever hears about it or cares, then it doesn’t become a job to have and it does little else. and then there’s also just a lot of irl shit i keep worrying about and dwelling on and nearly making some really fucked up or stupid decisions in the interim. and idk i just i wish i was one of those ppl who felt like they had a future and aren’t likely to die before age 25. or one of those people who just *does* something and it works out and they get to exist.
