Ah yay, you’re finding out stuff! I’m sure I did a post like this before but I can’t find it so I’m going to do a new one. It’s long so I’ve put it below a cut

King Carl XVI Gustaf-

Position: The King! 

Born: 30th April 1946 to Princess Sibylla and Prince Gustaf Adolf. 

Royal story: His father died when he was 4 and he became heir to the throne. He became King in 1973 at the age of 27. 

Interests: scouting, the environment, sports and industry. 

Fun fact: he became an internet meme for his choice of weird hats

Queen Silvia

Position: Queen consort 

Born: 23rd December 1943 in Heidelberg, Germany to a German father- Walther Sommerlath- and Brazilian mother, Alice de Toledo Sommerlath

Royal story: Met Carl Gustaf at the Munich Olympics where she was working as a hostess in 1972. They married in 1976. 

Interests: dementia care, children’s rights, and the arts. 

Fun fact: In addition to Swedish, she can speak 5 other languages: German, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Crown Princess Victoria

Position: First in line to the throne. 

Born : 14th July 1977 to King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. 

Royal story: She was initially superseded by her younger brother but Sweden changed the law in 1980 and at 2 years old she became the Crown Princess. 

Interests: The environment, children’s health, disability

Fun fact: She was one of the first royals to support the LGBTQI+ community when she attend GayGalan, an awards ceremony, in 2013. Her attendance was a complete surprise. When she went to award Gay of the Year where she received a two minute standing ovation 

Prince Daniel

Position: Husband of the first in line to the throne 

Born : 15th September 19 July 1973 to Olle and Ewa Westling

Royal Story: Daniel ran a chain of gyms, Balance, which became popular with the rich and famous in Stockholm. The gym and Daniel were recommended to Victoria by her little sister. She started visiting Daniel as her personal trainer and eventually in 2001/2 it blossomed into a romance. They were engaged in 2009 and married in 2010. 

Interests: Entrepreneurship, technology, health research, and sports 

Fun fact: Daniel’s father Olle donated a kidney to him in 2009. 

Princess Estelle

Position: Second in line to the throne

Born: 23rd February 2012 to Prince Daniel and Crown Princess Victoria

Royal Story: Princess Estelle is also Duchess of Östergötland, a position she was given by the King after she was born. She visited her Duchy for the first time in 2014 and has regularly attended royal engagements with her parents and other members of her family 

Fun fact: When her mother was pregnant, she said that Estelle would rather have a hamster than a little brother or sister!

Born: 6th December 1984 to Erik and Marie Hellqvist 

Royal story: Sofia was a model and reality TV star. She briefly lived in New York City where she worked as a yoga instructor. She met Carl Philip through a mutual friend in 2010. They became engaged in 2014 and married in 2015.

Interests: Bullying, health, and children’s rights

Fun fact: Sofia established her own charity in 2010, Project Playground. The charity supports children in South Africa, particularly through the provision of youth clubs and recreational activities.

She has not lived in Sweden full time since but returns for a small number of engagements each year

Born: 27th June 1974 in London to American Paul O’Neill and Austrian Eva Maria O'Neill (an ex of Prince Charles)

Royal story: While working in New York in the financial industry he became romantically involved with Madeleine, with whom he shared mutual friends. They began dating in NYC in 2010/2011. They got engaged in 2013 and married in 2014. Chris chose not to take a title so that he could continue with his business interests. They moved to London in 2015 and Florida in 2018. 

Interests: n/a- Chris does not perform charitable activities for the Swedish royal family 

Fun fact: There is an unconfirmed story that when Chris first fell for Madeleine he quietly donated $100,000 to her mum’s charity the World Childhood Foundation. He didn’t want Madde to know but of course she found out!

How is Professor Xavier a Free Man?

 I'm going to preface this by saying this isn't about anything that come out about Charles Xavier starting with Whedon's "Danger" arc and the years since.  This is about something that happened when I started getting into comics.  Given my age, I don't think I'll surprise anyone by saying the DCAU and the Marvel cartoons of the ‘90s served as a Gateway Series to the comics for me.  However, let's also keep in mind that during the '90s Marvel cartoons, a lot of the comics themselves hit a low point -- and Onslaught, for many served, as one of them.  For those of you who are in the dark, in the comics, Professor Charles Xavier has, in addition to being a colossal asshole, a bad history of developing a split personality with Onslaught being one of these.  After the infamous moment Magneto ripped the adamantium off Wolverine's skeleton, almost killing him, Charles mindwiped his old friend -- but in the process, started a series of events that led to another split personality running amok and on a very public stage, ending with the seeming deaths of the Fantastic Four and a good chunk of the Avengers (leading to the infamous Heroes Reborn fiasco).  Afterwards, Charles turned himself over to the government to pay for his crimes.  Over a year in real time, the events of Operation: Zero Tolerance happened and after he and Gyrich shut it down, Senator Kelly decides, after getting a letter from Charles's ex-wife Gabrielle Haller, to release Charles from the base Bastion operated out of.  Granted, he was missing, having been broken out of by the Brotherhood, but I must ask "How was Gabrielle successful?"  Like it or not, Charles was responsible for the event of Onslaught; chances are even without the Avengers and Fantastic Four, he has an, at best, double-digit body count to his name.  Around this time, Heroes Reborn: The Return and Heroes Return happened, meaning the Avengers and FF were no longer in Franklin Richards's pocket dimension and the world knew they were still alive -- for the most part.  And?  Onslaught still caused the death of people who aren't going to come back.  He still stole Sentinels and destroyed a good chunk of New York City.  It just seems like all the government actually cared about was the deaths of the Avengers and Fantastic Four, went "All is forgiven, Charles" after they came back, and didn't really give a shit about the other people hurt or killed.  And there's a reason I said for the "most part" regarding the return of the heroes Onslaught was presumed to have killed.  And that's without getting into the fact that a year in real time is only a few months at most in comic book time.  See, Avengers Annual 2001 revealed why... certain changes made before Onslaught were undone when the heroes returned and that's because Franklin Richard, who was a reality warper, didn't know about the events of The Crossing, hence why after they came back, the classic adult Tony Stark was resurrected and Wasp wasn't a mutated bug creature with Tony's return being in part, explained as having merged with the teenaged alternate universe version who replaced him after he died in The Crossing.  Yes, Teen Tony was hated and rightfully so -- but he was still a human being and it could be argued Teen Tony truly did die because of Charles, because while he went in, it was a resurrected adult Tony who came out.  Even if a mentally ill person did terrible things and regrets them, while they still need help, we just don't overlook their crimes -- and even putting aside the retcons, between Onslaught's actions and the time passed, Charles Xavier should logically still be in prison.

Who is Legion

FX is airing a new show called Legion based off of the character Legion from X-Men. The show exists in the XMCU which means he lives in the revamped timeline where Cyclops is alive and none of those first horrible movies existed but it’s not necessarily going to have any connections to the X-Men yet. The character Legion is also going to be an original take on the character but he is so great that I’m going to give you the canonical history of his life so far. It’ll be interesting to see what the keep the same; they definitely kept his mental illnesses. 

Legion’s real name is David Charles Haller, a Jewish man from Haifa Israel who canonically can’t grow his hair into anything but a gigantic mohawk, and he is an omega level mutant which means he has practically God–like powers.

His father is Charles Xavier, Proffessor X himself, but his mother, Gabrielle Haller, kept that a secret for a very long time. Gabrielle met Charles at a hospital where he was using his psychic abilities to alleviate trauma of the Holocaust survivors. They had a short fling in which David was conceived but Gabrielle, suspicious of his psychic abilities, kept David a secret and David’s godfather, Daniel Shomron, stepped in to help raise him.

When Gabrielle entered the Israeli Diplomatic Service she and her family were attacked by a Palestinian terrorist cell. Gabrielle and David survived, but Daniel used his body to shield David from the bullets and was killed. The trauma activated David’s mutant genes early (he was 10 years old and they don’t usually manifest until puberty) and as his psychic abilities turned on he killed all of the terrorists. David went comatose and absorbed the psyche of one of the terrorists who took control of his body, still comatose, and fought the growing alter egos forming in David’s Mindscape due to his DID

Gabrielle turned to the renowned geneticist Moira MacTaggert, coincidentally another one of Charles Xavier’s ex girlfriends, who insisted Charles come to treat him personally. Charles found that David had very similar mutant abilities to his own, only much stronger, then found out he was his father.

By joining the war in David’s Mindscape Charles was able to wake David back up and most of the alter egos were destroyed but they continued to develop unchecked.

Legion/David gained and lost control of himself many times, hurting many people even murdering Destiny, Mystique’s wife, when she tried to intervene with him and he saw through her precognitive abilities how devastating his future would become.

David decided he would realize his father’s dream of mutants and humans coexisting and to do that he traveled back in time to his own conception to kill Magneto who Charles was also with at the time.

Time travel shenanigans ensue and Bishop ends it by showing David what future he is actually creating. David was ashamed and in the reconstructed timeline he was thought to be dead, his mother even questioned his conception.

Years later David was discovered trapped in a concrete box and once he escaped he was transported forward in time where Bishop resided. It was a dystopian future and David was immediately captured and put into slavery. He got out of it somehow, these sort of things happen quite a bit to him. The X-Men finally took him in and Karma and Magik began working with him to get better but he still had major reality twisting hiccups while he was trying to be good but his ever increasing alter egos keep taking over. Meanwhile his relationship with his father continued to be estranged; Charles seemed to think he was too dangerous unless he wanted to utilize his powers or alternate personalities. Magick  is the only one that seems to consistently try to help him but sometimes with ulterior motives

Now for the really good part. X-Men Legacy: Legion written by Simon Spurrier.

Up until this point Legion was very inconsistently written because he had been a very minor character but in Spurrier’s Legion series the loose ends of the story are tightened and we actually see David as David. Before he only momentarily surfaced to find that he had caused a disaster and everyone was debating on whether or not he should be put down.

Charles had sent David to a secluded place for rehabilitation and never came back, as is his pattern with David. After the event of Avengers vs X-Men where Charles dies David finally had to face the fact that his father was never going to come for him, he was never going to publicly acknowledge him, and he never planned to let David return to the real world.

When he felt his father pass away David’s power surged and he wiped out the community he was living in, before his Guru died he told David to wait for the X-Men to come to relocate him again but David left, deciding he finally needed to change the pattern of his life, get a grip on himself, and find a way to see his father’s dream of coexistence come true. He does this by making himself somewhat of an invisible mercenary, trying to save mutants the X-Men hadn’t gotten.

David turns his Mindscape into a prison to keep all of the alter egos contained which worked relatively well, all things considered

Blindfold, a mutant nearly as powerful and ostracized as he is, seems to have an instinctual connection to him.

Blindfold is Ruth Aldine, and she takes after her legendary grandmother Destiny. The Destiny that David accidentally murdered years before. Ruth has a very traumatic history; she was powerful she was born with her mutant abilities already developing and she was born blind, specifically she was born with no eyes at all. When Ruth’s father left her brother Luca blamed her because she was a mutant and tried to kill her but accidentally killed their mother instead. Luca joins a radical anti-mutant group and ends up fracturing her mind which gives her schizophrenia and a very prominent speech impediment

She takes refuge in the X-Men mansion/school but the way she speaks, looks, and is unable to restrain herself from reading everyone’s minds makes her a social outcast

The X-Men eventually track David down with the help of Ruth’s powers

 And David isn’t having it

The X-Men try to keep Ruth from him but through their mysterious connection Ruth easily enters David’s Mindscape where she is partially able to speak normally, depending on her mood

She is able to get through to him until one of his altars breaks out and attacks her, knocking her out.

David lets the X-Men take the mutant children he had found and secretly follows them back to watch over Ruth who is now comatose. He enters her subconscious and sees her whole life, specifically her bullies

He brings her back to consciousness and they meet briefly as he escapes

She keeps track of him by following him in her astral body, not understanding quite how powerful he is and that he always knows where she is

 He tracks down the radical group her brother had joined and sets out to destroy them and her brother. She “reveals” herself to him telling him to knock it the fuck off.

She makes him promise not to hurt them so he sort of complies by messing with their minds so they will no longer be a threat. David continues on his mission to save mutants and impress Ruth and she continues to be his conscious while they secretly meet on the astral plane

 As this is all going on David is trying to deal with what looks like his father’s consciousness personified in his Mindscape jail. The entity does claim to be Charles Xavier and it continually terrorizes all of the alter egos and mocks David, among other things…

 The golden pervert, David and Ruth’s inherent connection, and because it’s X-Men everything is leading to a future dystopia where David loses control again but this time destroys everything. Ruth will have to kill him because she’s the only one strong enough and deeply embedded in him to destroy all of the alternate personalities along with David

 but David insists that he can change fate. He’s powerful enough and with Ruth as his one that gives him “purpose” he’s pretty sure he can pull it off

 But he’s going to do it by changing the will of people that will influence the dystopian future. Ruth argues that it’s immoral, especially to punish people for things they haven’t done yet. It was against Charles Xavier’s dream to force people into anything (although he often did it, unbeknownst to them) but David isn’t empathetic, in fact he already took out Aarkus before asking her permission. Ruth was mad but soon thereafter she sought him out again by using Cerebra

 But he had already made a deal with the golden pervert in his brain that in exchange for checking on the future again the pervert could have controlled his body for one minute. (Each of David’s altars personify one of his thousands of powers.) David sees the apocalyptic future he creates and runs off to an ideological facility that “cure” mutants by giving them medication that will give them brain damage, blocking their ability to use their powers. Ruth goes to her peers and the X-Men asking for help to get David out of this but it takes a lot of convincing

 David he realizes that although the patients seem to be well their minds are really shattered but another apparition of his father appears, reminding him of his failures and making him feel guilty for denying his heritage but David blocks amount and decides to go through with the cure anyway

 The operator of the facility reveals himself to be the Red Skull and the one that caused him to see his father because he had implanted Charles Xavier’s brain into himself, hoping the shame of giving up would make David want to fight but David still doesn’t want to

 He is given the medication and they air his conversion live on TV

 Ruth appears with X-Men she had convinced to come help her save him which is what the Red Skull had apparently been aiming for and the X-Men are live on TV appearing suddenly in what appears to be a peaceful facility to stop a man who admits to being a monster from “rehabilitation” but David had planned on him planning this and uses that moment to bring in a young mutant he had saved earlier. The boy’s ability was that everyone immediately loves him and believes anything he said, practically giving him the ability to change reality. Through live TV he convinced everyone watching that the mutants weren’t their enemy. He tries to evoke empathy but that doesn’t work as well

 Of course a battle with Red Skull ensues which is when the golden pervert who looks like Charles Xavier comes to take his one minute with complete control of David’s body. He wants Xavier’s brain for himself.

Ruth fights to get the minute to run out so David can take control of his body again and then we have this really funny moment

Obviously this isn't the end. Not only because it's comic books, but because this is a cliffhanger. The ending is kind of amazing so I want to encourage you guys to go read it.

but David insists that he can change fate. He's powerful enough and with Ruth as his one that gives him "purpose" he's pretty sure he can pull it off

But he's going to do it by changing the will of people that will influence the dystopian future. Ruth argues that it's immoral, especially to punish people for things they haven't done yet. It was against Charles Xavier's dream to force people into anything (although he often did it, unbeknownst to them) but David isn't empathetic, in fact he already took out Aarkus before asking her permission. Ruth was mad but soon thereafter she sought him out again by using Cerebra

But he had already made a deal with the golden pervert in his brain that in exchange for checking on the future again the pervert could have controlled his body for one minute. (Each of David's altars personify one of his thousands of powers.) David sees the apocalyptic future he creates and runs off to an ideological facility that "cure" mutants by giving them medication that will give them brain damage, blocking their ability to use their powers. Ruth goes to her peers and the X-Men asking for help to get David out of this but it takes a lot of convincing

David he realizes that although the patients seem to be well their minds are really shattered but another apparition of his father appears, reminding him of his failures and making him feel guilty for denying his heritage but David blocks amount and decides to go through with the cure anyway

The operator of the facility reveals himself to be the Red Skull and the one that caused him to see his father because he had implanted Charles Xavier's brain into himself, hoping the shame of giving up would make David want to fight but David still doesn't want to

He is given the medication and they air his conversion live on TV

Ruth appears with X-Men she had convinced to come help her save him which is what the Red Skull had apparently been aiming for and the X-Men are live on TV appearing suddenly in what appears to be a peaceful facility to stop a man who admits to being a monster from "rehabilitation" but David had planned on him planning this and uses that moment to bring in a young mutant he had saved earlier. The boy's ability was that everyone immediately loves him and believes anything he said, practically giving him the ability to change reality. Through live TV he convinced everyone watching that the mutants weren't their enemy. He tries to evoke empathy but that doesn't work as well

Of course a battle with Red Skull ensues which is when the golden pervert who looks like Charles Xavier comes to take his one minute with complete control of David's body. He wants Xavier's brain for himself.

Ruth fights to get the minute to run out so David can take control of his body again and then we have this really funny moment

The Fidel Castro Fair

The Fidel Castro Fair / Iván García Iván García , 21 February 2017 — The wood charcoal embers are slowly browning half a dozen kebabs with vegetables, pineapples and pieces of pork, while, on a shelf, the flies are hovering around the steamed corn cobs. From very early in the morning, Jesús, a chubby mulatto with calloused hands, gets on with cooking chicken, pork fillets and sautéed rice, to sell later in his small mobile shop positioned in a large car park, at the main entrance to the International Book Fair in Havana. A line of kiosks with aluminium tubes and coloured canvas tops offer local favourites, like bread with suckling pig, ham and cheese sandwiches, jellies, mineral water and canned drinks. "My kiosk specialises in dishes from San Miguel de Padrón. But the truth is that in this particular fair, sales are sluggish. Mainly because the organisers prohibited the sale of alcohol. You can forget about books and all that intellectual shit, you have to give Cubans beer and reguetón if you want them to feel happy – the rest is secondary", says Jesús. Thursday February 16th started off rainy in Havana. Idelfonso, a self-employed clown, looks up at the overcast sky and mutters, "if it starts raining again, they'll have to take the circus and its tent away, because no-one will bring their kids in bad weather. This fair has been pretty bad for us. No-one has any money, and those who do prefer to spend it on books and food", he says, in his bear get-up. In different parts of the car park, private businesses rent out inflatable toys for fifteen pesos for the kids to bounce about for thirty minutes, and five pesos for a quick ride on a horse. "Many families don't come to buy books. They would rather their kids enjoyed themselves playing with the equipment. There are hardly any amusement parks in the capital", says Rita, who deals with charging for the horses. Families and groups of friends lay towels out on the grass and picnic on a hill from where you get a unique view of the city across the bay. Gerard, a young man with tattooed forearms, feels uncomfortable. He tells his wife to go off with the kid to play with the inflatable toys while he complains about the lack of any beer. "These people are really party poopers. Whose idea was it to stop selling lager and nips of rum? I can't imagine it was because of Fidel Castro's death, as the bloke has been pushing up daisies for over two months now", moans Gerard, knocking back a lemonade as a temporary solution to the matter. Dora and Germán come from El Cotorro, in south west Havana, with two enormous bags to buy "fifteen or twenty boxes of drink. We have a cafe and we buy stuff here for ten pesos and then we sell them there for twenty. If we have time, we buy a few books for our grandchildren". The Book Fair always was a good excuse for thousands of Habaneros to amuse themselves. Kids skipping classes looking over displays of foreign books, inveterate bookworms, pseudo intellectuals who take the opportunity to come over as writers, the peripheral catwalk of hustlers and pickpockets selling tourists fake Cohíba cigars made in shacks in deepest Havana. But this time the organisers decided to put a stop to "sideshows which have nothing to do with reading", says Idalia, a Editora Abril bookseller, who adds: "The fair has been turned into a mess. Like a strip club. Hustlers who came to pull foreigners and people with money who have never read a book and were downing beers 'til closing time. The number of people coming here has definitely fallen, as nearly two million people came here two years ago. Now the numbers have fallen to less than half" says Idalia, who, in exchange for offering her opinions for Martí Noticias, asks me to buy some books. "The thing is, we get commission on our sales. And we aren't selling much", she emphasises. From the books on display, I choose the biography of Raúl Castro written by Nikolai Leonov, an ex high-up in the KGB and personal friend of the Carribean autocrat. The book, which looks good, costs 30 pesos, equivalent to three times the daily minimum wage in Cuba. According to the official press, it is the best selling book of the year. Idalia thinks differently. "You can put any rubbish you like on paper. They give the book, just like they did with Fidel's, as gifts to lots of people who attend events, and then they record them as sales. And, being prioritised by the printers, they have gigantic print-runs, and are on sale in all the bookshops in the country. But, I haven't seen too much enthusiasm among Cuban readers for Raúl's biography. Foreign lefties certainly do buy books dedicated to Fidel", she tells me. Although the present Book Fair is dedicated to Canada and the tedious state official Armando Hart Dávalos, the dead Fidel Castro is the prime actor. There is no lack of sets of Fidel Castro's speeches on the local publishers' stands, a revised edition of History will Absolve Me and cartoon books eulogising the dictator from Birán. "God help us! Fidel everywhere", says a lady walking through the Mexican pavilion looking for a diary she has promised her granddaughter. The foreign publishers are the busiest, in spite of the high foreign currency prices. They also sell pirate Leo Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar teeshirts, as well as a collection of Barcelona and Real Madrid posters. A Mexican bookseller tells us that "We take advantage of the fact that Cubans like football, and so we push this merchandise". At midday St Charles Fort looks just like an informal flea market. A few serious readers sit down, leaning against the ancient cannons which protect the fort, in order to read George Orwell's 1984 or a Gabriel García Márquez novel. The less serious fill up nylon bags with books on spritual advice or magazines about fashion and cooking. Then they form a little queue at the exit from La Cabaña, to get the bus going to the centre of Havana. Few visitors know the dark history of the fort, an ancient prison and location of hundreds of firing squads for Castro opponents. The thing is that in Cuba the disinformation, fear of knowing the truth, and amnesia help people live apathetic and apolitical lives.
