Author’s note: This is just another stereotypical story plot but you can still give it a read if you like :)

“I will do it.” All heads turned towards him and surprise was written over their faces.
One of them so called “cool” boys dared to speak carefully picking his words: “Are you sure you want to waste your time on this Tae?”, he coughed uneasy, “I mean Jungkook can just do it. Y/N is not really your type of girl.”
“Are you doubting my skills?”
“No, that is not-” Jimin wanted to clarify but Taehyung interrupted him:
“Good. Anyway you want to score off Seokjin with this right?”
They all nodded in synch.
“Then I am all in.”
You were busy cleaning the counter for the fifth time since there was really nothing to do today when you heard the bell that hung over the door rang.
“Welcome to smiles coffee, where the coffee will make everyone’s day brighter”, you said with your cringy cute voice which you instantly regreted. What is he doing here?!  That slogan had never bothered you before but in this very moment you felt so ashamed.
He eyed you with a raised eyebrow but than the corner of his lips curled upwards.
“Is that so? Well then you have to give me one cup of this magical coffee.”
You gulped away the embarassment: “Immediately.” You were more than happy that you could turn away to make the coffee. Normally no one you knew had ever come to this coffee shop which had been a miracle itself. But out of all the people that could have come here you at least expected it to be Kim Taehyung.
“Here you go. That makes 3,50″, you kept your voice monotone although you knew you will get scold for that by your boss. In his opinion the people were more likely to come back if you talk like a small girl to them.
Taehyung handed you a bill. “You can keep the change.”
You looked at the bill and your eyes widen. “Wow that is really generous. Thank you”, you smiled gratefully. You never got a higher tip than a couple of cents so this was really a lot.
“You know that goes without saying for a good friend like you.” He set up an arrogant look. Immediately you were remembered who was standing in front of you so your smile faded. You bit back a comment about your wonder that he called you “friends”. Because you were far from that. He was going to the same school and you even had a couple of classes together. But that was literally everything connecting the two of you.
“Yeah goodbye.” you took some cups and brought them to the kitchen as an excuse to get away. When you came back he sat on a stool next to the counter. His eyes were fixed on you with a awaiting look. You tried to ignore him and continue to look occupied. Out of all the days that were normally packed with work he had to come on the one day where there was hardly something to do.“You are still here? Do you need anything else?”, you asked a little annoyed after you could not bear his staring anymore.
“Rude”, he stated while acting shocked, “But actually yes. I heard you do not have a partner for the photo project yet and since it is the same with me I wanted to offer myself.”
“Wait what are you talking about?! Irene and I will be partners!”
“Really? Well maybe then I was mistaken when Jimin told me he will ask her tomorrow to do it with him.”
“What kind of bullshit?! Irene would never abandon me for that arrogant scumbag!”, you snapped. You were fuming. How dare him to tell such lies about my best friend?! It was no secret to you that Irene had a crush on Jimin ever since middle school. Still she would not betray me like this and also Jimin would never ask her to be her partner anyway.
You could not stand that boy. Neither him nor the rest of his clique. All spoiled boys coming from wealthy families so they acted like they do not need to think about their future. All of them were troublemakers and Taehyung was one of them.
“Hey, hey calm down. Is that how you speak about people?”, Taehyung remarked in a lecturing tone.
“If they deserve it, yes.” You were blowing up your nostrils out of anger.
Taehyung suddenly started laughing. “You are cute.”
You were taken aback by that comment. That was not exactly what you expected to hear when you just insulted his best friend.
“I would love to get to know you better.”
“As I said: I HAVE A PARTNER.”, you empazised every word.
“If you say so”, he shrugged and in a swift move he got up and snatched his coffee off the table, “I wil see you tomorrow then.”
He left the store and you were starring after him. What an idiot.
Taehyung tapped his foot impatiently on the ground. “Come on pick up, you bastard”, he mumbled.
“Hey, what is up?”, Jimin greeted finally.
“I just tried to call you five times in the past hour. Have your hands fall off from jacking off all the time?!”, Taehyung sassed.
“Rather the opposite. I was occupied. Sonja came over and we…you know… had a little fun.”
“Hold up since when are you two back together?”
“We are not”, Taehyung could hear Jimin grinning.
Taehyung’s lips formed a proud smile. “Not bad…Having the hottest girl from school as a fuckbuddy. I assumed you wanted to live in celibate after your latest break up”, he joked.
“Oh you know she cannot survive long without me.”
“Hands-down. But all the fun aside now. You have to do something for me!”
“And that would be what?”
“You know tomorrow you have to sigh in your partner for that photo project. Ask Irene to be your partner!”, Taehyung said in a ordering tone.
“Irene? Who is that?”, Jimin questioned.
“I think she has chemistry with you. A red head. She is always hanging out with Y/N.”
“Ahh I think I got a face. But yet again why should I do that?”
“She happens to have a terrible crush on you and also I need Y/N to be my partner. You know that project is a big thing and she will be forced to spend a lot of time with me. If that is not enough to make her fall for me.”
Jimin groaned: “That is the burden I have to carry for having such charming looks. What can I do?”
“Stop being so narcissistic and do it.”
“Alright but only for the mission! I hope that fucker gets smashed like a bug. Do your best!”
“Stealing his girl will only be the start. He will suffer for what he had done to me. An eye for an eye..”, Taehyung mumbled more to himself than to Jimin.
“To you? Did he also dissed you in that stupid newspaper of his?”
Shit! Taehyung bit down on his lip. “Yeah kinda… I mean if he insults you all than he also insults me.”
“Ah right. That motherfucker”, Jimin growled deeply, “Since you are doing it, I am sure it will be a success.”
What a safe! Taehyung breathed out. I nearly spilled the tea.
“Of course! I really have to go now. Bye.”
“See you tomorrow”, Jimin said goodbye and hung up.
The words of Taehyung did not let go of you and as you entered the school today you could not wait to talk to Irene to get rid of that bad feeling he had left. Unfortunately you had to wait with that till the afternoon because she had a doctor’s appointment in the morning. So you tried to focus all your attention on Macbeth. When the saving bell rang you jumped up and hurried out to your locker.
As you came closer you could see from afar Irene standing on her locker which is next to yours. You wanted to call her out but then you saw she was talking to someone. Jimin was leaning casually against your locker with a strand of her hair rolled around his fingers. Irene’s head was nearly as red as her hair and she was just nodding eagerly. When you reached her side you picked up Jimin bid his goodbye and left.
“What was that?”, you questioned instantly. You looked after him with a suspicious look.
Irene winced and turned around. “OH MY GOD Y/N! I just wanted to go to you. I can’t believe what just happened! Can you pinch me so I know this is not a dream?!” She asked and held her arm towards you.
“First tell me what happened!”, you demanded.
“You know Jimin. He just came up to me and.. oh my god I can’t say it out loud. Pinch me first.” She could not calm down.
You stopped her from jumping around. “Spill it!”
“He asked me if I want to be his partner for the photo project!”, she started squeaking again.
“And you said what?”
“What kind of stupid question is that, Y/N?!” She raised an eyebrow. “Of course I said “yes”!”
You were somehow paralyzed from shock and let go of her. It stayed silent for a little.
“But I thought you and I would be partners. Like we planned it”, you whispered clearly upset.
“But Y/N Park fucking Jimin asked me if I want to be his partner! How could I say “no” to him?!”, she whined.
“Just like this: I will make that project with my best friend together and not with you, you nasty asshole!”
“Are you serious, Y/N?!”, she clicked her tongue, which meant she was mad, “I know you do not like Jimin but still I hoped that my BEST FRIEND would be more supportive when I finally get the chance to be together with him and not act like a selfish kid because she did not get what she wanted for ONCE!”
“You are just blind, Irene. I am here to protect you! Yes, for some kind of strange reason he asked you to be his partner. But this probably only means he wants to play with you. Additionally I am sure you have to do the whole work alone since behind his good looks is really nothing hidden but pure stupidity. Why do you think he fails every class? He is just moving up because his parents are donating a shit tone of money to this go forsaken school! And if you really think he would seriously consider being with you than you are just as stupid as he is!”, you talked yourself into rage.
By now a small group of people had gathered around you to watch the spectacle. Some were yelling something like “Bitch fight!” over and over.
But you just ignored them since your eyes were focussed on Irene. Her eyes were starting to fill themself with tears.“I-I-I”, she was already sobbing, ”I can’t believe you would insult me like this. This friendship is over.”
“Fine. Great. I am sick of playing the protecter for you all the time and all I get is a ungrateful brat!”
“Well then you are welcome! You are now officially left out of duty!”
“Awesome! But don’t you think you can come crawling back to me when he has thrown you away like I predict you that he will!”
“I won’t! I will be very happy with Jimin and withou you. I don’t need you in my life!”
You gulped hardly. You felt like someone was choking you. “Me neither. Good day!” You turned around and pushed yourself through the crow to get away when someone stopped you.
“Y/N”, It was Taehyung, “What happened?”
“Let go of me, Taehyung!”, you had a hard time holding back your tears. Just not start crying here in fron of all those people, Y/N!
“No, come with me!” Before you could protest further, he took your hand and lead you through the hall. You turned a couple of corners and than he opened a door and pulled you into the room.
When you saw the red light you noticed you were in the darkroom. A second after he had let go of your hand and closed the door you had sunken down the wall, buried your face in your knees and started crying heavily. The tears felt like fire on your skin and your breath hitched multiple times.
Only when you felt a hand rubbing over your back in soothing circles, you were able to calm down a little. You looked up with your red and buffed up eyes. Taehyung was crouching in front of you and his hand naturally brushed your hair out of your face. Your lower lip started trembling again and more tears escaped the corner of your eyes once again. He gently wiped over your cheek with his thumb.
“It’s okay. Let it all out.”
Without thinking about it further you slung your arms around his body. All you knew was that you wanted to be hold right now. He lost his balance and fell back so you were now basically straddling him. His arms wrapped around you as well and started drawing the same motion on your back again.
“Let’s do it”, you whispered against his chest to embarrassed to say it out loud let alone look at him.
“What?”
You breathed out before speaking again: “Let’s be partners!”
“Alright”, he agreed with a satisfied smile on his face.
Wow done :D I am willing to continue this if you like me too :) Just tell me so ♥

Game 29: Lords of Karma – Victory!
Having spent most of my last post on mapping and exploring, I decided it was time to dig into this game and start solving some quests. The most obvious goal was to earn enough karma to enter Heaven, but there were a number of other quests in the game as well. Laying out my goals was helped by the discovery of a book on a mountain top, which purports to hold the wisdom of someone called Maharathi. Continuously reading the book gives a number of hints:
CHAPTER I. Putting the Torch to Cobwebs
CHAPTER II. I Give a Beggar a Silver Dollar
CHAPTER III. A Cooling Egg
CHAPTER IV. Secrets Found in a Crystal Ball
CHAPTER V. An Idol Destroyed.
This was a pretty good set of quests to go on. In addition, I had been asked to rescue a princess from a knave and return her to the palace.  Tackling all of these took me the better part of an afternoon, which was time I could have better spent watching hard Japanese wrestlers batter the hell out of each other (it’s G1 Climax season once again!). Still, I’ve had worse weekends, and played worse games.
Rescuing the princess turned out to be not difficult at all. Her and the knave are always found somewhere in the Oak Forest to the west of the city of Golconda. The last time I tried to fight him he killed me, but this time I battered him to death with a lit torch. Combat is very swingy in this game; you can kill a Troll with your bare hands, then lose a fight to a bat when armed with a sword. It’s very much just a case of luck, though it seems that the knave is one of the game’s weaker enemies.
The princess then started following me, demanding to be returned to the palace. I returned her to her father, who rewarded me with a diamond before taking his daughter on a vacation. From that point on I was able to enter the palace without fear of being thrown in the dungeons, although there’s not really much reason to do so.
Reuniting the royal family.
It was time to get to the clues in the book, and I started with the beggar. The silver dollar is usually found somewhere in the Oak Forest to the east of Golconda (the locations of items and creatures is randomised, although they usually pop up in the same general area). The beggar is easy to find as well, as he’s always on the road either north or south of the city. I gave him the dollar and he rewarded me with a lamp that never runs out. This game involves a fair bit of stumbling around in the dark, so it comes in handy.
The next easiest clue to solve was the one about torching cobwebs. I’d found some cobwebs in the Cyprus Swamp, so I went there armed with a lit torch and tried to burn them. None of the commands I tried worked, so I explored a bit and was soon attacked by a giant spider. The spider kept firing webs at me, but with my torch I was able to burn them away and thus avoid being killed. Eventually I struck a killing blow, although it was a long, laborious process of typing KILL over and over again. Searching the swamp afterwards I found a sword, which soon became my primary weapon.
I had no idea about the egg, but after an hour of fruitless exploring, monster killing, and treasure-finding, I decided to try talking to everyone I met. Most of them just attack, but I was quite pleased to note that every creature I tried to talk to had some sort of response.  Success came when I talked to the giant who lives in the Redwood Forest to the south-west. He told me that humans aren’t welcome in his forest, but I could win his trust by bringing him a sapling.
I’d found a sapling in the swamp during an earlier game, so I wandered around (and killed a crocodile) until I found it again. The sapling is heavy, so I had to drop everything from my inventory to even move. Then I couldn’t get back out of the swamp the way I came, because the sapling was too big to fit through a crack in a wall. I was forced to find another path east and north of Golconda, but I was eventually able to circle around and take the sapling to the giant.
I hope those are some REALLY big leaves.
He rewarded me with an egg. I suspect there’s a way to hatch it, but I never did figure it out. The “cooling egg” in the clue had me trying to light it on fire, which I couldn’t get to work. So I’m not convinced that I solved everything here, but finding the egg is good enough for me to consider the third clue dealt with.
The other two clues took quite a bit longer to deal with, because they both involve exploring underground. There are a number of underground areas in the game: the sewers beneath Golconda, the tunnels under the mountains, more tunnels accessed through holes in the swamp. The most extensive of these seems to be the caves under the southern Promontory. It’s hard to tell, because there are secret doors all over these areas. Sometimes they appear when you LOOK, and other times they don’t, so fully exploring these places is a matter of luck and patience. I’m still not sure I got everything.
There are monsters underground, and all of them can kill you: the worm and the vampire bat are the weakest. There’s an axe-wielding goblin, a mace-wielding troll, and a shimmering wizard who will happily roast you with a fireball from his staff when he sees you. The idol mentioned in the clues is also underground, in the caves below the Promontory, past a maze of stalactites and stalagmites. The troll always guards the areas leading up to it, and he can be tough to kill even when you’re well-armed.
The idol is dedicated to Baal, and when you examine it you’re asked to make an offering. I knew it would be a bad idea, but I had to try it at least once.
Whoever the god of this world is, he punishes you worse for this than for murder.
Yes, I got blasted for idolatry and took a massive karma hit. Needless to say, I restarted.
With idol located I needed a way to destroy it. I had earlier found a bomb lying in the Aspen Forest to the north-west, and I figured this was the way to do it. Sure enough, I took the bomb to the idol, lit a match, lit the fuse, and moved away. The bomb exploded, reducing the idol to rubble, and I got a big karma boost. (What I didn’t get was a screen shot, because my torch had run out while I was waiting for the bomb to go off.)
My final goal was obtaining the crystal ball, which I knew was being held by a friendly wizard who roams about the wilderness. When you talk to him, he asks you to bring him the staff of the shimmering wizard. Which I then tried to do. Many, many, many times. That guy is tough.  In the end I resorted to praying at the temple, which sometimes results in you grabbing a torch and wandering into the underground tunnels, and is probably the quickest way of finding the wizard. So I just kept on praying, fighting him when I found him, and returning to pray after he killed me. It probably took me thirty tries to beat him (with a lot of fruitless underground journeys when praying sent me to the wrong area).  When I took his staff to the good wizard, he rewarded me with the crystal ball, which I discovered could be used to see secret doors. I considered using it to map out the whole game accurately, but even I have my limits (I would have totally done it if this was an RPG though).
Say “appear” one more time…
Last of all, it was time to earn enough karma to make my way into heaven. If I’m being honest though, I accomplished this one way before destroying the idol and obtaining the crystal ball. The number of points required to ascend to heaven is randomised with every game; in some games I’ve ascended with only 24 points, and in others it’s taken me over 300. So as you can see, the game can vary greatly in difficulty.
There are three ways to earn karma: solving quests, donating treasure, and killing monsters. The first of these I’ve covered pretty comprehensively above.  Donating treasure simply involves taking any treasure you’ve found to the temple and using the DONATE or GIVE command. A sign tells you that “contributions will be gratefully accepted”, so it’s not all that obscure, but it did take me a few tries to hit on the right command. Despite this game’s premise supposedly being to do good deeds, it still ultimately boils down to finding treasures and returning them to a single location. We haven’t escaped the influence of Colossal Cave Adventure just yet.
Killing monsters is a little more interesting, because doing so can earn you karma as well as lose it. I think it has something to do with the weapon you’re using.  When you examine a weapon it tells you where it was made. Some are forged in Valhalla, some in Hades, and some are made by “Knave Armaments, Inc.”  I’m pretty sure that you get points when using weapons from Valhalla, and lose them when using weapons from Hades. I found a ring from Hades that shot lightning bolts, and while it was powerful I lost karma every time I used it.  As for the Knave Armaments weapons, I’m not sure, but I think you lose karma from those as well. I just tried to test it and got killed by a vampire bat, so it’ll have to remain a mystery.  Oh, and of course killing friendly characters always loses you karma.
So I amassed a couple hundred karma, went to the temple, prayed, and got the following victory screen.
After this it dumped me to the OS prompt, so I guess heaven is using a TRS-80 you guys.
So that’s Lords of Karma done, dusted, and off the books. After a couple of games that I feel like I didn’t properly beat, it’s a relief to notch up another win. All that’s left is a quick Final Rating and I can move on to something else.
FINAL RATING
Story & Setting: The set-up for Lords of Karma promised more than the usual late-70s adventure fare, but in the end it wasn’t much more than another treasure hunt. It perhaps deserves some props for being one of the first game adventure games that has a number of sub-quests, and multiple paths to victory. It’s possible to win without donating any treasure at all, by completing the quests instead. The setting doesn’t have a lot of personality, and I’m tempted to dock it for mixing mythologies with Hades and Valhalla. Rating: 2 out of 7.
Characters & Monsters: The characters are simple quest-givers, but they do all respond when spoken to, and have a minimal amount of personality. The selection of monsters is decent, although combat is too random to differentiate them all that much. It’s a slight cut above the other adventure games available on home computers at the time in this regard, though. Rating: 2 out of 7.
Aesthetics: As with so many of its kind, it’s a text adventure with very sparse descriptions. Rating: 1 out of 7.
Mechanics: The parser is very simple (I doubt it knows more than about a dozen commands), but it gets the job done. Once you know how to GET, DROP, GIVE, TALK, PRAY, LIGHT and KILL you’re pretty much good to go, and the games does what it’s supposed to do. Combat is very random though, and there are no tactics that can mitigate this swinginess. Rating: 3 out of 7.
Challenge: In terms of puzzle solving this game has very little in the way of difficulty, and gives a decent amount of hints as to what you need to do. Earning karma is also not that hard, especially once you know how to avoid losing it. The game even resurrects you when you die, with no loss of karma at all. The most challenging thing is combat, but even that’s a minor setback in terms of the goal of ascending to heaven. It’s probably about the right amount of challenge for the size of the game, if not a little too easy. The randomisation gives it some small replay value, though. Rating: 4 out of 7.
Innovation & Influence: It doesn’t seem as though this game had much of an impact, but it does feature some minor innovations. It might be the first adventure game to explicitly have “doing good” as a goal, and it might also be the first to feature elements of Eastern philosophy and religion (albeit in a minor way). Rating: 3 out of 7.
Fun: I only had three sessions on this game, perhaps five hours in total, but I found myself enjoying it while it lasted. There’s just enough to see and do in the game to make it worth exploring for a short while, although the combat can be very frustrating. Rating: 2 out of 7.
No bonus point for Lords of Karma; I doubt I’ll revisit it.  The above scores add up to 17, which doubled gives a Final Rating of 34. That puts it equal 14th overall, and 8th on the chart for adventure games. That’s right in the middle, equal with Pirate Adventure, and among the highest-rated adventure games for home computers.
NEXT: It looks like I have tracked down a copy of Quest after all, so I’ll be looking at that if I can get it to work. If not, it’s either Swords & Sorcery (a minor PLATO RPG) or Daniel Lawrence’s DND (which I doubt I’ll be able to get running but you never know). The end of 1978 is finally in sight!

10,000 Plus People Are Getting Arrested at The Canadian Border
We Are Change
I decided to take a day trip up to Montreal to see first hand what an illegal border crossing between Canada and the United States is like. Over 10,000 people have illegally turned themselves in seeking asylum in Canada, and they end up finding themselves in very extraordinary situations. To get a grasp of what is happening here, I interviewed “Beacom of Light,” Taylor who has joined me on this little road trip. We stuck to the facts as it is bizarre what’s happening here and there are many circumstances to explain.
youtube
First of all many Haitians, who lived in the United States under new immigration protection laws that were set up by Barack Obama after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, have been allowed to live in the United States. Donald Trump has signaled that he will be ending those special immigration programs and we have seen a heavy influx at this illegal border-crossing.
Thousands of displaced people seeking refuge in Canada, especially after Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau sent out multiple messages saying that he welcomes anyone and everyone who needs help, and now we have a predicament that has unfolded here.
After interviewing the police here on site as well as several refugees, I asked Taylor what he gathered from everything that he has witnessed here. He discussed many of the important factors that people need to know to understand the situation as it unfolds.
The police officer whose job is to discuss public relations with media was saying that 2,000 people came here last month illegally. It’s a tough situation you know. You have Trudeau almost as an incentive, tweeting out that people are welcome here and a lot of other Haitians and others in America are sending out tweets and WhatsApp messages, saying that people should come here and seek refuge,” stated Taylor.
Justin Trudeau sent the only Haitian Parliament member of Canada down to Miami to counter a lot of fake news surrounding this story. There has been a lot of misinformation being propagated throughout the media, whether it’s through WhatsApp or on Facebook. Someone has even done Facebook ads and radio advertisements. The asylum seekers are being led to believe that “Canada is now open,” that “Canada is now allowing refugee and asylum seekers entry into their country,” and what we learned after talking to the police and after investigating this case is that’s not true.
“Our job is very, very easy job, we know what’s going on there, we know what’s going on at the border. People think they can cross anywhere between any two ports of entry, but when this happens, we know about this because we have electronic detection, we have cameras, we talk to our colleagues from the USA, so we talk to the United States Border Patrol people.”
“We have good collaboration, so when somebody is coming toward our border, they call us. They talk to us about what’s going on so we can intercept them but again, which is very particular at Roxham Road. They all come to one point so we know we can catch them there, but we still do surveillance of the border. There was a trend after Christmas in the spring when there were more people coming from the USA to this crossing. There were some big numbers in July with 2996 arrests at Roxham Road within that month. We have some numbers for the first two weeks of August which show 2700 intercepted, and that’s quite a big number. We don’t speak late of what’s going on. Anything can change in the world, could be bad weather, can be a catastrophe, can be politics, we don’t know. We observe every day what’s going on, but we don’t speculate about what is coming.”
Many of these people are hearing the fake news, conflicting reports, and the false optimism from the Prime Minister. The reality of this situation is that these people are getting arrested and having their cell phones confiscated and searched. They’re immediately apprehended and processed here at this border-crossing, which they’re choosing to do because of a supposed loophole in the law. If they illegally cross they have a better chance of getting asylum. Most of this is according to the fake news, and we’re learning that two-thirds of Haitian asylum seekers get refused refugee status and get sent back to Haiti.
Taylor explained some of the other attributing factors that he believes people should know about this situation. We had an interesting conversation with just two asylum seekers that the Canadian government is having a hard time dealing with. The Canadian government here has set up this 24-hour Center where they are processing and arresting people then busing them into stadiums. Taylor and I were at the stadium and talked to two people who lived in New York, since they were about five years old, and now they’re here in this kind of unprecedented legal limbo.
Taylor explained that conversation you had with those individuals, “Yes, so they were the children of Haitian migrants refugees that had come here, but they didn’t come here after the events in Haiti with the earthquake. They came here quite a bit before that, or at least to the U.S., and I’d spoken to them, and I’d gotten their story, and I sympathize fully.”
Taylor continued, “I had asked them mostly what their status was in the United States. They were there under temporary status, and I guess they weren’t citizens. They didn’t even have residency. I wondered since they were there for 17 years why they did not try to get residency and citizenship. They told me their parents didn’t and they didn’t try. One of them was an adult and decided to come here after hearing that Donald Trump was going to revoke the ruling that allowed Haitian migrants to stay even though they had arrived here long before that.”
It is interesting that this split second decision that many people are making. It can be attributed to the fake news and optimism given by Justin Trudeau. One individual that we talked just left his job and didn’t give notice and didn’t collect his last paycheck. Some people stopped going to school and are now living in a stadium where they’re being issued arm bands with an identification number, eating the same food every day, living on cots. Mostly they are living in the concession area of this old Olympic Stadium under conditions that of course, they’re not very happy with.
While living in these circumstances, they are going to have to go through this legal limbo, having hearings which some people say may take up to a year and a half. The people we talked to at this crossing are going to have their hearings in a couple of weeks, but there is also a lot of pressure on the state here.
There are also many reports of harassment, even at the checkpoint Taylor and I visited. Many local Canadian citizens are saying that they’re overwhelmed, that they can’t facilitate this in-pouring of refugee seekers. There are concerns that Canada cannot afford to house and feed so many displaced people. I asked Taylor what he is seeing on the kind of opposite spectrum of this human plight.
“Some some people have spoken with here are very welcoming some are not. I’ve heard mixed feelings. I think this is more of a formality, a lot of these people have been incentivized to come here. They know they’re going to get arrested, we know that they know that they’re going to get arrested. The police know that as well, but they’re they’re not necessarily arrested.” Taylor informed me, “They’re not being handcuffed, they’re detained and processed quickly, they seem to be looking through their bags just making sure obviously, just to make sure they’re not bringing weapons or other things.”
“We did hear reports that I don’t know how many but some of them had brought child pornography or something over the border and that’s obviously terrifying and concerning. I don’t know if that has been blown out of proportion or not, but it seems like a mixed bag. Ultimately it seems like Trudeau is now kind of going back on the incentive he gave people to come here in the first place.”
We are also learning that a lot of people here are volunteering and helping people here get processed. Shuttle services are escorting these people to the stadium that they’re all staying in. Even the local municipality here paved a road that used to be between the United States and Canada. This “road” was once a ditch that has been paved so people could safely walk through.
With this influx of over 10,000 refugee seekers, the outcome of this dilemma is still unclear. The Canadian government has sent a clear signal that this has to end. The current remedy is only a temporary one, and it is not going to work in the long term. Justin Trudeau does need to decide something with this mass exodus of people trying to escape the tougher immigration policies that the United States has established.
Taylor gave us his final thoughts on this matter stating, “I would just say that it seems like a lot of the reports initially that everyone was Haitian is is as false. Many of the people I’ve spoken with say that it’s a mixed bag of people coming here, although still predominantly Haitian. It is appropriate for them to come to Quebec as they’re French-speaking.”
“We see people from all walks of life, a couple we spoke with alluded to a lot of the migrants coming from North Africa and even the Middle East. I would say that there’s a lot more to it than the media it seems to make out.”
I appreciate Taylor’s efforts in helping me with the coverage of this crisis. I also want to thank everyone for supporting the real independent media and allowing me to be here on the ground. If it weren’t for your donations, participation, sharing liking and commenting, I would not be here. I love you guys, thank you so much.
