fuck i just typed out a whole thing about the Berserk game

ANYWAY to whoever was asking me if it was worth it, you’re too far back in my activity to @ you directly i apologize. but i am answering as a Berserk fan and an (albeit new) Warriors fan who has only just completed the Golden Age Arc in the game which was about 20 missions long

pros: good visual design, one of the best musou games i’ve seen graphically and it works really well with Miura’s designs. also physically very cool, chopping through enemies feels a lot more visceral weighty in the game unlike in other Warriors titles where enemies are Japanese paper doors and you are a combine harvester. also, although it is juvenile, the excess blood and guts just makes it MORE FUN. it reminds me of Ninja Gaiden where you jump into a crowd of enemies one second and in the next emerge covered in guts as the last man standing, and speaking of Guts

cons: this game locks you into Guts about 80% of the time. now this could just be due to it being the first half of the game. making Casca, Griffith, Judeau, and Zodd the only other playable characters besides Guts when you AREN’T locked into Guts or are playing free mode makes sense in a i guess i don’t want to play as Corkus or Rickert kinda way(although not being able to play as Pippin seems like a missed opportunity). but this also calls into question that if the second half of the game does introduce Serpico and Shierke as playable characters maybe even Fernese and i mean shit yeah i’d play as Puck if they let me, that’s still not great variety. and Warriors games, which are already criticized for their variety, survive by their playable roster and the different playstyles therein. Miura’s script also does not end up untainted as many of the key scenes are replaced with standard battles that really just don’t make sense in context. i mean considering one of the most character changing moments for Guts in the series was a night of a 100 man battle that he won, it seems less impactful when he just killed 2000 with the flick of his wrist in the fight leading up to it. many of the cutscene are just footage of the films, which is fair enough, but of the in-engine cutscenes, while they start out fine, later on when the much more dramatic and intense scenes take place they just come across as silly. and so far the out of the boss fights i’ve encounters, plenty were bog standard while fighting Zodd was kinda rad, fighting Wyald was a pain in the ass because his attacks knocked you back 100 feet while not actually doing any damage so neither of you could kill each other for fucking years, and the fight with Femto (which in the series is a powerful moment showing Guts is powerlessness against these forces of darkness and not really a fight at all) you just grind out your super move 3 times to use it on him while you’re annoyingly reduced movement and attack speed debuff to Guts while you have to hunt down and strike a pedestal that’s causing it, that’s constantly teleporting from one place to another, like playing whack-a-mole while being tied to a bed. 

NOW as i said before i’m only halfway through this debacle so who knows, maybe Shierke’s gameplay or the Berserker armor will liven things up in a great way, i wouldn’t know because you still have to trudge through the Golden Age arc to unlock any of that even in free play, but i plan on getting there regardless. if any of that makes it out for the better i’ll let you know, if there are more playable characters than i thought i will let you know. but until then i can’t really recommend this game. even if you are a HUGE Berserk fan i still don’t know if it’d be worth your $60, maybe wait until it’s cheaper, maybe rent it and check it out yourself. if you’re a Musou fan i can guarantee you’ve played better Musou games in your life, so only go for this one if you’ve always wanted to see what they’re like but on the mediocre end of them and full of GORE.
