imperatour year zero masterpost
so here's a comprehensive overview of the cuntiest live performance in the ghost repertoire.
this isn't actually my favorite ghost song. or my most played ghost song. or the ghost song i consider the best. or even my favorite ghost song to see live. but it is, as mentioned above, the cuntiest.
in total, year zero was performed 128 times across imperatour (2022-2023). based on my count, wikipedia incorrectly lists 129 total imperatour shows. of those 128 performances, only 126 are theoretically available for viewing (the two kia forum shows being unavailable for viewing at the time of this post). of those 126, i've been unable to find footage for four (in part one of this post, anyway).
for performances with multiple recordings, i picked either the highest quality recording or, in exceptional cases, a lower quality recording that captured a moment i considered to be essential viewing. in the cases of multiple equally good recordings, i picked those that centered copia over those that centered ghouls.
commentary on the performances is usually reserved for notes about what makes the footage unique. this can mean quality, angles, or any deviations from copia's "standard" year zero choreography. by standard choreography, i mean the following timed moves and gestures:
stands still for the first round of demon chants, starts walking to center stage when the second round starts, moving hand to the beat. slowly walks to front of stage for first verse, holds hand up and counts up to five for "count down together," then holds up devil horns. conducts crowd for chorus, turns back when lights go out and third round of demon chants starts. walks among guitar ghouls. steps quickly (swooshes) toward house left on second verse, sweeps hand across on "presence of the wraith." returns to center stage and steps forward on chorus. pauses for guitar solo, gradually heads toward black guitar ghoul, makes various hand gestures. steps quickly (swooshes) toward center for the bridge. at center stage while walking forward, slides hand down microphone for "victim to fall for temptations." preening motion for "a daughter," either hand on hip or flex arm for "a son." pretends finger is dick for "ancient serpent deceiver," moves finger in circular motion and points up for "above the stars of god." remains center/front for chorus while conducting audience. holds final "zero" with head back, black guitar ghoul jumps in front. releases note, looks annoyed, swooshes off to house left around the drum set. end.
below the cut is part one of the recordings i selected, plus links. this post was the first time i found out tumblr has a link limit, so it goes up to around the middle of the us leg of re-imperatour. the remaining performances will be in a reblog.
if you have any year zero footage for the following, please let me know:
nampa 2022, west valley city 2022, rennes 2023, esch-sur-alzette 2023.
reno: the official start of imperatour! back when year zero was preceded by the first minute or so of helvetesfönster. notable for its novelty as the first performance with the cornette fit, and for missing two "bits" that are staples of imperatour year zero: there's no "ancient serpent deceiver" dick joke and the black guitar ghoul doesn't jump in front of copia for the end solo.
seattle: this performance includes the "ancient serpent deceiver" gag, but still no black guitar ghoul jump.
nampa: missing footage
portland: one of the more intensely flailing ancient serpent deceiver moments.
west valley city: missing footage
denver: notable for having a fairly unique footage angle that allows for a couple of clear full-body shots that aren't skewed upward.
lincoln: the footage is very solid here. black guitar ghoul does jump in front of copia now, but the bit where copia pretends to be annoyed about this isn't yet in effect.
minneapolis: notable for copia starting to be a bit more diva-ish/irritated during the first guitar solo.
columbus: very good footage, questionable audio with one guy going very hard constantly.
hershey: excellent footage. outstanding for those who want to overanalyze cunty gestures.
newark: just partial footage here, unfortunately, but this does kick off the bit where copia looks annoyed at black guitar ghoul for jumping up for the final solo.
worcester: outstanding little spin at the beginning. anyone interested in multi-angle closeups of the cornette itself should watch this.
camden: the first of two camden imperatour performances. this one is probably one of the most well-known "good recordings" of imperatour's year zero, and with good reason. a must watch!
pittsburgh: shaky footage.
toledo: far away, but fairly crisp footage that makes copia look a bit like a penguin in a skirt.
grand rapids: excellent angles whenever copia moves to the left side of the stage.
rosemont: abysmal audio quality, but incredibly good hand movement footage.
cincinnati: a solid recording with some very swooshy moves.
milwaukee: well-shot, good full-body views.
st. louis: quite a bit of distance for this footage. good audio quality.
independence: great for side angles, good r-rolls on "archangelo."
sugar land: includes helvetesfönster. varying recording start times make it hard to tell which others have it. excellent view of the full stage set from center.
dallas: notably shelved under YouTube Kids. good hand gesture visibility in some shots.
el paso: the absolute best finger wiggle/hand flick on "count down together now and say the words that you learned." a must watch!
phoenix: bit blurred/shaky.
anaheim, anaheim alt: first recording is the full song, second is noticeably better quality but incomplete, so both have been included here.
manchester: time for imperatour proper! opens with helvetesfönster. good top-down angle on this recording makes for some great unique shots. a must watch!
london: the limp hand on "daughter to fall" is essential viewing.
glasgow: fairly far from the stage view, no zoom ins.
birmingham: another YouTube Kids edition! what's up with that? notable for a mic cut-out or possible lyric fumble at "penance is to burn."
rotterdam: good sound quality, some nice close ups.
paris: very half-assed hand on hip for "a son."
cologne: starts with helvetesfönster (at this point in my viewing i've realized it's a constant through all of pre-imperatour and imperatour, but not re-imperatour). crisp video that really captures the richness of the stage lighting.
frankfurt: partial footage here.
prague: the mic tosses here feel particularly punchy, and "overlord of flies" hits great. a must watch!
tampere: on "comforting in their faith" there's a nice little arm-cross while swooshing over to house left.
stockholm: incredibly crisp video, great lighting with full-body shots. a must watch!
oslo: opens with helvetesfönster. view is pretty far from the stage, but the full view of all the lighting rigs is actually great.
malmö: interesting audio drag on "words that you learn." not sure if it's an issue with the video or an actual thing he did with his voice.
brussels: pretty distant footage, but crisp enough that it's good for seeing the bigger swooshy movements.
milan: damn near the gold standard for high-quality close-up footage. excellent hand gestures. a must watch!
badalona: great hand gesture visibility, good video quality.
madrid: give it up once again for a recording with helvetesfönster in it! the turn-around after the first chorus hits with a little more drama than usual here.
vienna: some good shots of the irritated-during-guitar-solo moments here!
zurich: incredibly bright lighting makes copia look like a white spot for a good chunk of this one. great diva swish at the end.
hanover: recordings from house left tend to be the best due to the heavy focus on that side of the stage for choreography, and this one is no exception. a couple of solid leg-out-of-the-skirt moments here as well.
munich: a partial recording with "light malfunction" in the video title, so i went in expecting a light malfunction and did not see one.
budapest: head-on view of the stage. questionable audio quality, but a direct and rare enough angle to be the pick for this performance.
clisson: a performance i wish there was more and better footage of. lots of wind here, and it's doing all manner of marilyn monroe things to that skirt. great for seeing the number/size of fabric panels in there. the wind does some hazardous-looking things to that pyro setup.
san diego: back in the us, now for imperatour-proper instead of pre-imperatour. a great recording with straight-on angles and solid audio quality.
tucson: good angle here, bit low-res, but the overall effect is very nice. there's a good hand-flick-and-swoosh on "overlord of flies." it's also got one of the best "victim to fall for temptation, daughter to fall for a son" moves. must watch!
austin: the angles on this video are phenomenal, with "countdown together now" having a particularly excellent shot.
corpus christi: excellent side angles of the silhouette here.
huntsville: great quality and zooms, feels like some extra cunty flair in here, though maybe that's just me.
duluth: the vocals are interesting here. maybe the recording is slightly better sound-wise.
asheville: pretty good side view.
tampa: good combination of zooms and distance. wonderful view for the second-verse swoosh.
danville: audio is a bit off, but some great shots. excellent hand gestures during the first guitar solo.
trenton: great view, surprisingly low views for it being as all-around good as it is. excellent shots of the swooshes. must watch!
elmont: bit shaky but i like the crowd environment here, and there's some great shots. notable for it being the first time i've ever heard a year zero lyric flub. "welcome y—angelooooo." was so ridiculously consistent show-to-show up to this point that i wouldn't have blamed anyone for thinking it was a lipsync.
providence: further from stage, but steady camera and great sound quality.
bangor: a solid quality recording. some very good close-ups and a few where it looks like copia's intentionally looking at the camera. an incredible "get a load of this guy" gesture at white guitar ghoul before the second verse.
quebec city: fairly far from stage view, good audio. notable for including what looks like a dick joke for "fall for a son," creating an oversaturation of dick jokes right after each other.
laval: house left view. on "moving without eyes" there's an excellent little foot-kick-back move that would be incredibly hard to see if not for this angle. i've got a new thing to look for in other recordings now.
toronto: outstanding full-body views of the robes. slightly shaky cam.
saginaw: notable for having some of the most blatant copia-irritation when the black guitar ghoul jumps in front for the solo. these are the reactions that seem to be more of a staple for re-imperatour shows, so it's nice to see the gradual progression of him playing it up a little more each time.
youngstown: maybe it's because i've watched so many of these, but this one feels like the average year zero recording. perfectly standard choreography, acceptable video and audio quality. it's the mean of all year zeros.
peoria: nice, punchy mic toss in the first verse. in general, the hand gestures for this one feel extra dainty and flowy. a must watch!
green bay: here we are at the final imperatour show! it's a solid recording.
rouen: welcome year zero? more like welcome year 2023! it's re-imperatour time, baby. this one's fine. far from the stage, but good audio. the choreography hasn't changed a lick even with seven months off. of course, we've got the new backdrop and some of the lighting choices are different, with the introduction of some green light being the most notable.
lyon: famous (to me) for being the absolute closest-to-the-stage recording i've ever seen. the angle is a bit low, but if you're looking for head-on, center-stage footage, this is a must watch!
toulouse: bit far from stage and a little shaky. decent audio. good for seeing the full light setup.
rennes: missing footage
lille: the lighting is unusual here. i think there's a filter on the recording. great annoyed-during-first-solo moments.
strasbourg: there's no shortage of strasbourg recordings. most of them hover at around the same quality level. i picked this one because the crowd noise is great.
milan: because the milan show is my personal favorite from re-imperatour, i've linked the full show (timestamped to year zero, of course). the hand on hip for "a daughter" here is fantastic.
nice: lyric fumble! "since dawn of man is equal to the fate of lice." solid recording.
arganda del rey: recording is horizontal and vertical at the same time. worth watching for completionist purposes, but not particularly easy to watch.
nantes: the light starts off weirdly blue here. might be a recording issue though. pretty close to the stage.
amsterdam: far from stage, but with a few good zooms.
berlin: angle is a little questionable, but it's decent with good audio quality.
gdańsk: bit far from the stage, decent quality.
sölvesborg: despite the sweden rock performance giving us one of the most iconic year zero photos (with the robes looking all windswept), there aren't really any high-quality recordings at a good angle. this one at least captures how windy it was.
leicestershire: another festival show, this one in better quality.
esch-sur-alzette: missing footage
bochum: the most-viewed year zero recording thus far! and for pretty good reason. it's crisp, the sound quality is good, and it's close to the stage.
antwerp: one of the most brightly lit festival year zero recordings. pretty far from the stage, but worth watching just for the close-up shot on the big screens of copia just standing there at the beginning. there's a guy crowdsurfing, too.
hamburg: decent quality, but less focus on copia during the guitar solo than i personally prefer.
neu-ulm: hey, i was here. at the show, i thought he sounded a little more nasal than usual, but figured i was imagining it and the in-person audio was just hitting different. but no, he does sound more nasal here than in the 80-some other performances i've just watched.
spálené poříčí: partial footage. it's good quality, but very short.
oslo: my personal favorite of the festival recordings. excellent flourishes during the second verse. a must watch!
athens: not the best quality recording, but it exists, and that's what counts. has some great silhouette shots. unfortunately, it cuts off a bit early.
viveiro: most notable for copia doing "count down together now" with his left hand instead of his right. at this point, i'm so used to seeing him do it with his right hand that this feels completely alien to me.
seinäjoki: partial footage at a distance.
helsinki: the final european show! and it's a very solid recording to close things off with. some might consider this the best festival recording. it's definitely up there.
concord: kicking off the last us leg of the tour! woohoo! it's a good recording. there are plenty for this show.
auburn: quite a bit of distance from the stage, but the audio is nice.
airway heights: far from stage, and this stage looks...smaller? there's something going on with the shape of it. good audio though. the percussion for the bridge sounds excellent. i honestly wish it was this audible in every recording.
west valley city: sounds like he starts off with "crestfallen" and catches himself. recording is a bit shaky. a little too ghoul-focused for my taste.
denver: incredible quality recording paired with some of the cuntiest little moves i've ever seen. a must watch!
st. louis: there's some sort of lyric fumble around "parasites" but it's hard to tell what's going on there. some monitor footage in this recording.
milwaukee: the cape is looking particularly flowy here, but maybe that's just me.
clarkston: another YouTube Kids edition! it's been a while. this one gets a bit shaky, but it's not bad or anything.

City of Luxembourg: it's Old Quarters and Fortifications
Tumblr media
Today, let's embark on a virtual journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luxembourg City, where the intertwining threads of ancient fortifications and quaint old quarters weave a narrative of resilience and architectural splendor.
Nestled in the heart of Europe, Luxembourg City stands as a testament to the country's rich history and strategic importance. Its UNESCO World Heritage status, bestowed in 1994, recognizes the outstanding universal value of its fortifications and historic quarters.
Begin your exploration at the Bock Promontory, crowned with the Bock and Petrusse Casemates – an extensive network of underground tunnels and chambers that once served as military defenses. Wander through this subterranean marvel and imagine the city's wartime history.
Stroll through the enchanting Old Quarters, where cobbled streets, charming squares, and historic buildings create an atmosphere that transports you back in time. Admire the fusion of medieval and Renaissance architecture that characterizes this part of the city.
Marvel at the Grand Ducal Palace, a striking Renaissance-style building that serves as the official residence of the Grand Duke. The palace stands as a symbol of Luxembourg's continuity as a sovereign state.
Explore Fort Thüngen, an integral part of the city's fortifications. This star-shaped fortress, surrounded by lush greenery, showcases military engineering from different periods and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Tumblr media
Take in the scenic beauty of the Alzette River Valley, where the city's fortifications are harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape. The green spaces and winding river add a touch of serenity to the historical tapestry.
Descend to the Grund district, nestled along the river, with its picturesque houses, lively cafes, and the iconic Saint John's Church. The blend of historic charm and contemporary vibrancy makes it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
Luxembourg City's UNESCO World Heritage designation recognizes its role in shaping European history and its well-preserved architectural and urban ensemble. It serves as a living testament to the city's ability to adapt and evolve while retaining its cultural and historical identity.
In conclusion, Luxembourg City, with its old quarters and fortifications, invites us to wander through centuries of history and marvel at the resilience of a city that has stood the test of time. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it encourages us to appreciate the delicate dance between past and present. When you're ready to explore a city where medieval charm meets modern vitality, Luxembourg City promises to inspire and captivate. 🏰🌍🌟

Lucilinburhuc School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - School Houses
Does anyone recall the Wizarding School I created for Luxembourg, since I will always be bitter about us having to go to Beauxbatons? I thought it was about time I updated this. School houses, finally!
With a bit of info on the Houses themselves and the story behind their names.
So far I posted a bit of info about the school itself and the uniform designs.
I think next up migh be...the story of the school. Who founded it, when, why, why is it located in Beaufort and not in the capital...the whole shebang.
The rest is under a Read More, because this is an awful lot of text. XD
T H E   B A C K G R O U N D
Melusina is a kind of nymph or Undine that can be found in French, German, and Luxembourgish lore. In France, she´s more often depicted having a snake-like lower body half, while in German lore she often appears nameless. Some speculate she´s a cousin of the famous Lorelei.
Count Siegfried the 1st, also called Sigefroi, was a real-life count who founded Luxembourg in 963 - he built his castle near the river Alzette, and the city of what is now known as Luxembourg city formed itself around it. The Alzette is the river in which the Melusina is said to live.
Luxembourg city features a statue of the Melusina, on the banks of the river she lives in, next to the ruins of Siegfried´s castle. She´s tall enough that you can sit next to her and have a chat.
T H E   L E G E N D
This legend has been adapted depending on regional lore, but here is the Luxembourgish one.
Count Sigefroi used to live in Körich, and one day he took a ride on his horse and got lost. He found himself on the place on which the city of Luxembourg stands nowadays, on the ruins of an ancient castellum. He looked over the lush green valley, when he suddenly heard the most beautiful voice sing a song. He listened closely and let his eyes follow the music; he then spotted a young maiden sitting amongst the ruins next to the river Alzette. It was Melusina. Upon seeing the knight, she pulled her green veil over her head and disappeared with the last sunrays. Sigefroi grew tired and fell asleep under a tree. The next morning, he followed the river and found his way back home - but he could never foret the maiden. He often returned to the valley, and soon Melusina began to like his company. They fell in love, and he asked her hand in marriage. She agreed, but she had two conditions: firstly, she asked not to be moved away from her living place, and secondly, she made him promise to leave her alone on Saturdays and never to ask or look what she was doing on that day. He promised, but he didn´t have enough money to build a new home for Melusina and himself, even after trading some of his own possessions with other Lords and wealthy members of the clergy. So he made a deal with the Devil, who promised to help in exchange for Sigefroi´s soul in thirty years´ time. Over night, a beautiful castle rose above the Alzette valley, and Sigefroi and Melusina could move in. They lived happily and had seven children. Now years after their wedding, Melusina was still holding up the tradition of locking herself in her room on Saturdays. Sigefroi had grown curious with the years passing, and so one Saturday he decided it was finally time to discover what his wife was hiding from him. He went to her room and was greeted by the sound of large quantities of water gurgling and splashing. He peaked through the keyhole and saw Melusina, sitting in the tub, combing her haur with a golden comb or brush, a fish tail instead of her legs. He screamed in surprise and disgust, and Melusina disappeared, forever taken from him, and her soul damned to never find peace. It is said that the castle´s wet nurse sometimes spotted a ghost-like female figure entering the childrens bedroom to comfort the youngest one when it was crying.
There are multiple other stories telling about how to free Melusina´s soul, but no one succeeded so far. It is said that she appears every seven years as a mortal woman on the very same spot she disappeared. She can also be heard lamenting on this spot whenever the city is in danger. She turned into the city´s mythological keeper.

Sorting
Students are sorted via a suede bag containing either red or blue glass stones. The red ones are for House Sigefroi, the blue ones are for House Melusina.
The student to be sorted holds their hand within the bag, without touching the stones. One of them will then slide between their fingers, as if attracted by a magnet.
Sorting does not only take personality traits into consideration, but also how the student views magic and is willing to use it.
Note: Students may feature traits belonging to the opposite House. Sorting takes into consideration those that are more dominant. We applaud and welcome the diversity present in both Houses, and wish that they work with and alongside each other, not against.
House Sigefroi
Bravery || Ambition || Recklessness || Loyalty  || Curiosity || Determination
Sigefroi students appear as outgoing, sometimes a bit daring and reckless, but most of the time in good spirit. They prefer to try out new things before premeditationg too long; "learning by doing" is their stance. As such, they often jump into new adventures without first considering the consequences. They generally prefer to work with their hands. Their curiosity often gets the best of them. It does prevent them from overthinking too much, and they often prefer to trust their gut feeling rather than their reason.
With friends, they are very loyal. A Sigefroi is always there when you need help.
Classes like Care of Magical Creatures, Spells, Flying Lessons, and Quidditch training are perfect for Sigefrois.
Note: Of course, Sigefrois can display Melusina traits as well. Witty Sigefrois can be found quite often.
House Melusina
Creativity || Resourcefulness || Cunning || Witty || Patience || Friendliness
Melusina students appear more calm than Sigefroi students but are always friendly upon first meeting them. They prefer to think everything through and do research before trying out new things. It prevents them from getting badly surprised, but also lets them miss out on spontaneous opportunities. Physical labour often doesn´t seem to be their forte; reading and research is where they excel the most. They like to use their intellect to get out of difficult situations; their cunning trait comes into play at such times, though they generally make sure not too cause too much harm.
Never deceive or leave behind a Melusina. They may forgive at some point, but they never forget.
Classes like Divination, Ancient Runes, Transfiguration, Potions, and Herbology are perfect for Melusina.
Note: Of course, Melusinas can display Sigefroi traits as well. Curious Melusinas can be found quite often.

Folklore in Luxembourg
My tutor pointed out that I should delve deeper into the historical aspect of my project, more specifically in folklore stories. Before she mentioned this I had already thought about this possibility, however I knew that the country’s myths and legends were actually very few. The most famous one which I have planned to definitely include in my MA project is the story of Melusina.
Tumblr media
Melusina is a mermaid of the Alzette river and today we can find the famous purple statue sitting underneath a willow tree next to the river. The legend says that Count Sigefroid, who founded Luxembourg’s capital, discovered a beautiful woman during one of his hunting expeditions. He fell in love with her immediately and married her, with 2 conditions, that she would never leave the Alzette valley and that every Saturday she would be left alone. After many years the Count kept his promise but he grew suspicious of what she would do alone on Saturdays, and when he spied on her he found out she was a mermaid. Upon been discovered Melusina ran away and disappeared into the stones of the walls of the city.
It is said that she will show herself every 7 years hoping someone will free her.
There is a rock stamp created in 1997 said to had been done by an artist who saw the mermaid, and a few years ago Luxembourg built a modern purple statue to commemorate her story.
I have discovered a folklore stories book by Nicolas Gredt's Sagenschatz des Luxemburger Landes published in 1883, unfortunately the book is only available in German and I have yet to find a translation. From reviews I can tell it contains stories about witches, elves, dragons and witches which would be wonderful subjects for future children projects.
One known children’s book author has actually written a book based on a Luxembourg tale about trolls in the forests of Mullerthal. The author moved here in 2011 and the story inspired him to create a book about language difficulties (between humans and trolls) as a way to help his own children adapt to the big move from Seattle.
In conclusion myths and historical tales are a subject that will be included in my MA project. I am not sure to what extent as my primary focus is daily modern life, but especially the Melusina story which has been kept alive in the culture will be featured in my project.

Moselle- a week wheeling in wine country
Tumblr media
The only place open in Enrich was a wine bar, with stiff black suited waiters, chandeliers and white table clothes that look as white as snow. My mum and I hover near the door, aware of our scruffy fluro coats and trainers, our sweaty, sunburnt faces and unwashed smell. We don't fit in here, but there is no choice, this is the only place to eat in town.
One waiter moves towards us, smiling uncertainly. We are seated, our oil stained coats hung on special pegs among smart summer tailored jackets, and a wine menu thicker than my arm is presented to us. The cheapest wine in 30 euros a glass. We look at each other, restraining giggles, and when the waiter approaches us, we feel like the biggest frauds ever ordering two beers and a plate of chips.
Who bikes down the Moselle, through the most splendid wine region in the world and orders... beer? You can see it cross the mind of our neighbours at the restaurant. But who can argue with your body craving a cold beer after a day of cycling in the hot sun.
My mum and I decided to cycle the Moselle on a whim; we were interested in the Rhine or the Danude; something flattish and easy to navigate for two people who hadn't toured much. Then, idly researching one evening, I saw a picture of the steep, vine covered hillsides and two cyclists grinning at each other over a glass of wine. That was it! Perfect.
Tumblr media
There was (quaintly) a book in the library on the route, but very little online, so planning was quite difficult. We decided  fly into Bonn, pick up some hire bikes, cycle down the Rhine until it snakes off into the Moselle River just outside of Koblenz, and then take the Moselle as it meanders all the way to Luxembourg City. The first issue was hiring bikes; it was almost impossible to find anywhere to hire them from without also hiring a package holiday. We wanted to do it ourselves; we didn't want someone taking out stuff and booking the hostels for us. In the end I contacted a bike shop in Neuwied and they agreed to rent us out some bikes for the trip.
The Moselle is a beautiful river. It meanders through steep hillsides and deep valleys, that at times rise up into a dramatic ravine. It's sides are covered in vineyards so steep you need ropes to pick the fruit. Each twist of the river presents a town more picturesque than the next; traditional dark beamed houses, with flower boxes overflowing, cobbles and fountains, and tiny churches. Every stop is waffles and cream and exquisite coffee, and of course, there was wine.
Tumblr media
It was not only an amazing cycle ride, but also a relaxing holiday. We'd both been busy at work, so it was a great way to get away from everything.  The route, following a river, was flat and easy to navigate, helped with fantastic signposts everywhere provided by the german government. With relatively few big roads or cities, it felt easy to slip into a relaxed, slow pace of life that immediately felt like being on holiday.
We flew into Bonn, and stayed in the fantastic hostel BaseCamp Bonn, where you get your own personalised van to sleep in. We had a hippy van with it's own flower garden, and my mum regailed me with stories about her 60's youth which were probably too detailed. They also had a converted train carriage to sleep in, if you so wished.
Tumblr media
The next morning, we set off down the Rhine on the Rhine Cycle Path. This is totally off-road, and follows the giant meandering curves of the river south. I recommend the Dragon Hills as a superb place to stop off at on this stretch; it's a steep climb (or a train ride up if you're feeling lazy) up to incredible views over the Rhine valley. We locked our bikes at the bottom and walked up, powering past the train with contempt. The views over the Rhine valley were well worth the climb, and the apple strudel and coffee at the top was a brilliant incentive too.
Tumblr media
From here, we stayed the night in Koblenz, admiring the huge statue of Emperor William l that overlooks the town, which today stands as a celebration of German reunification. While you’re there, don’t miss the oldest timber framed house in Germany, the Abteihof in Kobern-Gondorf, which dates from 1320.
Koblemz is also where the Moselle river starts. We rose early, and joined other commuters onto the the Moselle Cycle Path towards Luxembourg City.
The route along the Moselle was almost entirely off road. We spent the first day whooping as we plunged down steep valleys, under the spectacular Moseltalbrücke suspension bridge, and goggled at the vertical train tracks that dangled down the sides of the ravine, used for workers to pick the grape vines, which cling at near impossible angles to the slopes. Maybe the sheer insanity of having vineyards on the cliff-like sides of the ravine give the wine of the region a little extra je ne sais quoi.
Tumblr media
There were some fantastic things to see on the way. I recommend stopping at Cochem, which is like a fairytale town- set around the river, it is a mix of cobbled streets and traditional old houses, overlooked by the stunning Cochem Castle, which sits high on hill overlooking the town. The castle is a classic disney style one, with turrets and towers that turn into a magnificent silhouette against the setting sun. We took a cable car up the opposite peak to watch the sunset over the town.
Tumblr media
Then there is Trier, Germany's oldest town, with Roman baths to visit and over flowing with historical sites and buildings, The Imperial Thermal Baths (Kaiserthermen) are the highlight but other attractions include the medieval Hauptmarkt square, St. Gangolf's Church, the Red House, the Porta Nigra, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthew and the fortified residential towers. We stayed in the youth hostel there and were greeted with a amazing breakfast spread; a continental breakfast of your dreams with at least 6 different types of cheese, fresh bread, fruit salad, meats, eggs, pastries, fresh orange juice and wonderful coffee. For a hungry cyclist, this was a highlight on the trip.
Tumblr media
Along the route, there are some gorgous old towns to visit, such as Enrich or Bernkastel. which is famous for its medieval timber framed houses and the market square is a perfect spot for lunch. Every town is fantastic for the local delicacy of apple pie and cream. There are castles galore too- you can see Klotten, Bischofstein and Thurant in the first bit between Koblenz and Cochem, while further down, you can visit the ruined castle of Metternichs.
There is also many vineyards to visit. I am not a natural wine drinker, but I recommend visiting- if not stopping for a sample glass at some of these.  The wine yards of Trittenheim and Neumagen-Dhron are some of the oldest wine-growing places. Around Cochem, there are the steepest wineyards in the world.  Zell is a wonderful wine growing village too.
Tumblr media
You finally end up at the small town of Schengen on the tri-country border with Germany and Luxembourg, well known as the place where the treaty providing open borders throughout Europe was signed. This feels super historic and perfect; one side of the bridge is France and Germany, one side Luxembourg- it just goes to show unimportant borders really are. We took the obvious- one foot in germany/one foot in france picture, and then set off for the final stretch.
It was a spectacular cycle ride in to Luxembourg city. Luxembourg City is full of surprises. As you cycle into the centre, you pass some dizzying views of the Alzette River gorge – flanked by spiky-spired houses and battle-worn 17th-century ramparts.
Luxembourg City first served as a fortress – although it was unable to defend itself against foreign powers for hundreds of years. It was controlled by various Spanish, French, Austrian and Prussian armies from the 15th century, with that imposing river gorge serving as a natural barricade. And now those tumultuous territorial clashes are over, modern-day Luxembourg City actually celebrates its battle wounds – the most spectacular of which is the Alzette gorge’s honeycomb of old military tunnels, hewn over centuries by pick axe and gunpower. They once sheltered hundreds of soldiers, who would poke their cannons through shadowy openings to fire on marauding forces in the valley below. Today, you can poke your head through those same nooks to gaze over one of Europe’s most picturesque, peaceful – and underrated – capitals.
Luxembourg revels in its multicultural roots: everything from its architecture to the local dress sense is a happy mish-mash of French, German and Dutch influence. The menu might be in Luxembourgish, but your waitress might take your order in French. Dinner could be a hearty Flemish stew or a crispy flammkuchen with lardons and onions, just like in Germany.
Tumblr media
My mum and I put out feet up in the spectacular Luxembourg, ready for a train back to Bonn and a flight home, we finally felt ready to have a glass of wine from the region. We asked the waiter to recommend us.

The village of the Pfaffenthal valley, taken from the hill of Fort Niedergrünewald. The Pfaffenthal Lift can be seen in the middle background, which provides mobility for pedestrian and cyclist from the village to the city centre uphill. - Pfaffenthal (Luxembourgish: Pafendall) is a quarter in central Luxembourg City. The village’s named after the German words Pfaffen, meaning monk, and Tal, meaning valley, as the area was once administered by the Benedictine Abbey in Altmunster. - During the Middle Ages, this valley was popular for craftsmen and artisans, who used the Alzette River to aid in their work. The site is a strategically important gateway to Luxembourg City, and was thus repeatedly fortified by successive rulers from about the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries. - (18/09/18) (at Luxembourg, Luxembourg) https://www.instagram.com/christmeister/p/Bu3forbhaOk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p4m6t3a4bmu2

In order to prove that the fairy tale is real, God created Luxembourg
Magical country with multilingual
The Luxembourgers are probably the kind of people who are most envious by language lovers. Due to the living environment, people here have mastered multiple languages since childhood. The whole city of Luxembourg is a collection of western European national culture of the museum. Gothic architecture originated in Germany, Rococo architecture from the Netherlands, and post-Baroque architecture from France and Austria. Different cultures mingle, ferment and coexist harmoniously forming this magical country like a fairy tale world.

Meet the fairy tale in the forest
Luxembourg is a small country, but 70% of its land area is covered by forests. It is a veritable “land of forests”. There are so many ancient castles, also called " the country of thousands of castles." Although the Europe has many famous castles. In Luxembourg, you will find out that in order to prove that the fairy tale is real, God created here.
Strolling through the Constitution Square
The Constitution Square is the largest square in Luxembourg. It is covered with green grasses and flowers, and there are exquisite and beautiful statues scattered among them. Standing at the highest point of the square, you can see the world-famous Alzette Valley, which divides Luxembourg into two cities. Across the gorge are the two largest bridges in the country, the Adolf bridge and the Charlotte bridge, connect the scenery on both sides of the gorge. Looking out from the bridge, the endless depth of green, wrapped in gray-red wooden houses and castles, rolling hills, show the world in the fairy tale as it is.
Visit the beautiful town of Fianden
The town of Fianden is located in the eastern of Luxembourg, close to the German border, where the famous French writer Hugo was exiled. The famous Fianden castle in the town is known as "the most beautiful castle in Luxembourg". Nowadays, the interior of the castle still retains its original layout, it is like a museum presenting the history of the castle in different periods in a quiet time.
