Did you see this picture yet? The first thing I realized was Michael's hand on David's back and their lovely smiles.

Hello! Yes, I did certainly see this group picture that was posted this morning, after every other picture had been posted. This is from Georgia's Insta, so for those who haven't seen the original post, here is a screenshot, along with a close-up of Michael and David, so we can see a little better:

It seems that Georgia's hashtag has been causing some confusion due to her use of an idiomatic expression, so for non-native speakers, the word "tits" has multiple meanings--colloquially, it's another word for breasts, but in British slang, a "tit" also refers to someone who is a fool or an idiot. So Georgia is saying here that she has tits, Anna has tits, and Michael and David are a pair of "tits" (idiots), which gives us the number three.

I did notice and enjoy that there is a "beading" theme to this picture, between David's suit and Anna's dress. I actually very much like her dress and how flattering it is, and it's something I would wear myself, although probably in a different color than white. I also love the way David's jacket sparkles, and there is something about him wearing it while standing next to Michael (who looks one box of bleach away from Aziraphale) that makes it have even more of a "the angel and the Starmaker" vibe to it. Because it's them. You know?

That was a large part of the impression I had of this picture, as it were. Of there being two distinct couples here, but perhaps not the couples you'd assume. It actually reminds me a lot of the picture that the four of them took in Lapland last year, which also looked like two gay couples rather than two straight ones. They all seem to look very comfortable in this arrangement as well, in a way that I felt was somewhat absent from a few of the pictures that were posted yesterday.

To your point, though, I did notice Michael's hand on David, and the warmth that radiated out just from that single touch. His hand is also noticeably low on David's waist, which echoes how we've seen Michael with his arm around David in the past, and is a lovely complement to David's hand being near Michael's neck. Michael's hair is also a bit disheveled compared to the red carpet photos, and I love the idea of it being messed up from a snogging session he and David were having in a coat closet before the girls pulled them out for a pic. Actually possible? Maybe, maybe not. But it's still a delicious thought.

Another thing I noticed is that there is something to the way Michael and David draw the eye in this picture. Georgia and AL are posing/smiling in the same exact way they do in every group picture...although unlike the others, this one wasn't a selfie, and so I wonder if that could be why they seem to be giving off a sense of discomfort to the camera. With Michael and David, the feeling is more one of hesitation. The warmth and crackliness and connection is still there, of course, but it's also almost as if they're holding back, somehow. Which doesn't seem very much like them, at least from what we've all see over the years.

It is a nice picture overall, though, which makes it unfortunate that Georgia's caption sort of takes away from the moment a bit. And given that she's been in the habit of adding these types of cutting comments/tags to a lot of her recent posts, it feels less like "British humor" and more like knowingly taking a dig at Michael and David. She could have just as easily posted the group pic without the hashtag, so at least for me, that's what makes her using it feel so deliberate.

So those are my thoughts on the Oliviers group picture. I am glad that we actually did get one of Michael and David, and to know that they did have the chance to interact at the event. Yesterday, on the way to the orthodontist, Royal mentioned they always forget how old I am, and they always forget how old their aunt and uncle are. To them, when they picture someone in their 20s, they picture aunt&uncle, even though aunt&uncle are actually in their 30s. But when Royal pictures someone in their 30s, they picture me. And they said it's been proven that people used to look older a few generations ago.

I said, I thought there might be a few reasons for that. There have been huge cultural shifts in things like smoking habits, daily drinking habits, and suncare habits, all of which can age you heavily and prematurely. Royal also mentioned stress, and wondered if social improvements have reduced overall stress for more people.

At the Ortho, we were seen by the same woman who had removed my old metal bracket+cement+soldered wire retainer, and she said, "That was wild, we had never seen anything like that before. And you had it for a while, right?" I said, "Yeah, almost 30 years." And her face froze and her eyes went huge in shock. I said, "That's just how they used to do it in ye olde barbarian days." And she said, "No, I just can't believe you're even old enough to have had anything for 30 years."

Don't smoke, wear sunscreen, kids. Maybe get a little fat in your middle age.

okay so I read Brave New World yesterday and I am going to be talking out of my ass for a minute because I got some stuff I want to say but also I am not willing to articulate it in a way that makes more sense so without further ado here is my bullshit analysis about Lenina Crowne thank you

The book takes place in a society that believes “everyone belongs to everyone else” ie there isn’t really anything like monogamy and having multiple partners is a societal expectation. Not only is it expected, but it is indoctrinated into the citizens during their youth so it’s not just an expectation, but something they feel practically compelled to do. One of the themes in the novel is about challenging the societal conditioning- actively vying for freedom and choice over psychological manipulation and an assigned fate. 

Okay, you might be saying... what’s that have to do with Lenina? 

Lenina, in the book, is described as a healthy and beautiful young woman. She is popular with the men at her job and she likes society how it is. Every inch of her appears to be the model citizen. 

But she has one flaw... 

When we meet Lenina, she has been going out exclusively with the same man for nearly four months. The man, Henry Foster, has been seen not participating in this exclusivity in the same way as Lenina as he is a healthy standard society male. Lenina doesn’t mind that he’s doing this, but she has to be coerced by a friend of hers to see other people aside from Henry. The person she ends up going out with aside from Henry is Bernard, who everyone deems undesirable because he is short and negative. 

After her disastrous time with Bernard, there is a new man she is interested in. And once again, we see her falling into a monogamous mindset. John isn’t from the society, and thus was not indoctrinated in the same way as everyone else and doesn’t understand their world. Still, Lenina finds him attractive and tells her friend that she can’t stand being with anyone other than John to the point that it’s painful. Even taking drugs is pointless, because when they wear off she’s still only interested in John. 

John likes her, too, but has a very negative attitude towards sex most likely stemming from his mother and how her many lovers impacted their lives when he was a kid. Lenina is sexually active, though, and offers herself to him only to be attacked by him. John’s attitude towards sex continues to be an issue as towards the end of the book, Lenina once again offers herself because despite everything she still likes him, and this time instead of just his hand against her it’s a whip. Her overall fate is unknown. 

I’m sure it’s obvious where I’m going with this, but I will explain anyway. 

Lenina plays the part of the average, healthy society citizen well. However, she desires just a single partner on multiple occasions. In fact, at the end of the book she is with Henry again. Throughout the book, Bernard tries to impress and shock her with his own radical thinking, and though it disturbs her greatly she doesn’t get him in trouble or anything when she so easily could. 

Lenina herself is just the kind of individual that the society in the book should be afraid of. With her monogamous streak in her interest in both Henry and John, as well as the same romantic singular feelings she herself inspired in Bernard, a woman like her would be considered dangerous. Yes, Lenina enjoys sex and she enjoys the sports she is conditioned to enjoy, but she is also at heart a romantic which is the exact kind of thing they don’t want in their society. On top of that... Lenina is one of the 30% of women left naturally fertile. It is entirely possible, though highly unlikely, that she could become pregnant and give birth to a future generation of dissidents and thus be the very key to bringing the society down. 

I’m probably overthinking it, though, because honestly they never bring up Lenina’s own oddness outside of the inciting incident where she accepts Bernard’s offer of a date to avoid getting in trouble for only showing interest in Henry. All in all, I think Lenina was an interesting character who I wish had more focus in the book.

Anime North 2022

I mainly got there at 5:30 and stood in line until 9pm just to get my badge…

I can only put 10 images but this was like a very accurate representation of the line up. There was two mega lines as shown in this representation.

Yes, I was upset and felt like I got all in cosplay just to stand in a line. Checked the buy/sell thing that was on Friday then left since standing for over 3 hours I was super exhausted.

Anime North 2022, Day Two.

My brother came with me, he was lucky to have bought a Saturday pass online before they stopped selling Saturday tickets.

We got there at 10 am, they did fix the line issue as my brother only stood in line for an hour to get his badge. But yesterday there was at least a cool breeze, Saturday was much more humid outside.

I checked out some of the vendors, had a couple people say, “omg are you Aoba that’s so cool”, someone took a picture with me.

Then went to the North Building for the Cosplay Panels.

This con was soooooooo badly organized, I walked around the building I don’t know how many times trying to guess where the entrance was. Absolutely no signage saying “enter on west side” anywhere. When I finally got there, there were signs saying, “use end doors” … and no “enter here”. Lots of people would continue to walk only to figure out there were no more doors. It was so confusing…

At least inside in the “ballroom” they had water stations, cause my face was so red from that heat walking around trying to figure out where to go. I had a fan and water, and it took me about 2 hours to cool my red face down. A “safety” volunteer was worried about me… ehehe.

The three cosplay panels I went to starting at 12:30 were all by the same panelist Lenore, who works for worbla and is a professional photographer. Her panels were amazing, very informative and she was quite funny xD (She’s elementalinsight on Instagram and Elemental Photography and Design on Facebook.)

The third panel, the Embellishment and Detailing in Cosplay panel, she had two other guests, they also did a very good job with their panel.

Overall, due to the horrible Friday lineup and lack of organization or signage, this being my first ever anime north and first time ever cosplaying… I had a very bad experience.

There was nothing really in the vendors hall I wanted, all I spent was $15 bucks on an overpriced fan so I wouldn’t die of heat stroke.

In the line on Friday lots of people WERE NOT wearing masks when not social distancing. I wore it because I am overweight and DO NOT want to get covid with you. With that surgical mask on my nose kept running. My brother said when he had to wear them he had that problem too. So my eyes and nose kill. Also pulled a muscle in my leg as those skinny jeans give you like no range of motion in your legs, I got no idea how Seii-chan did it... Oh wait, he does this for a living. lol

I had to pass out at 8pm since my eyes were killing me so badly I couldn’t stare at a screen and my eyes kept watering. I even cleaned the makeup off with cotton swabs and mineral oil but I still work up with super puffy eyes this morning.

Not going back today, as I said there’s not really anything I want in the vendors hall. It’s cool if you are into a more “recent” fandom, which I’m not… so I found absolutely no Dramatical Murder stuff, as I guessed I wouldn’t. They had lots of cool weapons for cosplay and Japanese food, candy, drinks etc. But if I really wanted any pokey, hi-chews, etc, I’d go to my local grocery store who sells it for cheaper then you.

So yeah, today is rest day and hope my puffy eyes go down, otherwise I’ll need to go to the drugstore and get some eye cream. ☹

Dani Update: 10.7.23 1:30pm EST

I am happy to report that Dani is still recovering (of course) but doing so much better. She is now off the Antibiotic IV's and working hard (walking everyday) and trying to get better at being able to hold anything down. And she is. She had a couple of Spoonfuls of pudding last and did not vomit so forward progress everyday.

Her parents got her one of this seasons Disney Halloween Sweatshirts and she is in love with it and can't wait to be out of the hospital so she can wear it. And also in this pic you can see her new Squishmellow friends that Julie & Hannah and Jen & Mary got her, because a girl needs her monsters after all.

She apologizes to everyone who has tried to text her whom she has not got back to yet. She's still taking it easy from looking at her phone as it still makes her dizzy and nauseas etc. But I have a good feeling that this will pass.

She's till sore from her incisions but she told me and her mom that they are itching her. This is a good sign, as that means that they are healing.

They are waiting to see how she does with being off the antibiotics but if she responds well then they can get the PICC Line out.

I am very pleased overall with the positive progress she's making. It sure was nice seeing her this morning. I was having a bad day myself yesterday with my own medical stuff (I have bad days about once a month, and will have that forever, but that's ok. I like being here to be able to report on Dani) so I wasn't able to go and see her yesterday. Yes we talked on the phone and all but always better seeing her in person.

Oh in the realm of small favors her roommate from yesterday was discharged and we were all glad about that. She was elderly and blasted her TV with nonstop Fox News propaganda day and night. So Dani said it was so nice having the whole room to herself and not having to listen to that nonsense another night.

Of course they all have headphones for their TV's but you ever notice that these type of folks always seem to have some need to share their screed with everyone else, whether they are interested in it or not. I guess it's some of their base programming, to try to infect as many others as they can with that claptrap. So I was feeling bad for Dani, and was going to say something to the lady today (one of the reasons I went early today with her mom) and put an end to all of that. I was pretty amped up and was all ready for that conversation… I mean my wife just had major surgery and is trying to rest so she can heal… But they discharged the lady last night. I am sure that they (the nurses and hospital staff were on the same page as Dani in not wanting to listen to anymore of that stuff.

Settle down everybody I wasn't going to have a Detroit converstion with an elder-lady just a polite but firm one.

Anyhow. She's doing real good. And I'm pretty sure that she's topped the hill and is now on the downhill side of it.

Album of The Week: ‘La Pioggia Di Marzo’ by Mina

Stand out song: ‘La Pioggia Di Marzo’. 

For about three years now I have been buying clothes and other goods from the Accrington based supplier Trickett. The thing is, I say Accrington based but really, thats not where the brand is based at all. Sure, geographically it might be and whilst some of the items are inspired by the local area,the majority of the wears and the spiritual home of the brand is Naples, Italy. My love for Trickett opened my eyes to the city in Southern Italy and a deep adoration was formed for the city’s football team, once home of that certain Argentinian man, perennial underdogs or rather underdonkeys who this season defied all odds and won Serie A. But I digress, I’m not talking about Napoli’s stunning league title win, we could be hear all day otherwise, but instead I am talking about how a little bit of Italian culture goes a long way. And thats just it, whilst I did go to Italy when I was younger, about fifteen years ago infact, I still feel this bit of a connection tot he country because of Trickett. As a result, sometimes I do like to put on background Italian music as I daydream about being there and yesterday was exactly one of those times except when I put on this particular Italian morning playlist, the first song that I heard made me stop in my tracks and then smile from ear to ear. 

We’ve been to Italy, now let us go to Norway. Since seeing 2021′s ‘The Worst Person in The World’ it has often occupied a spot in my headspace. This has been the case for a few different reasons. Ofcourse, the film itself, but perhaps more than that is its vision of Oslo which I then replicated to an extent on my own visit to the Norwegian capital, yes I did go to that book store and pretend I was in the film, but even more than the locale and visions of Oslo, it is the soundtrack that has stayed with me the most. ‘The Worst Person in The World’ has an expertly curated soundtrack with the real highlight for me being the ending track that accompanies the ending shots of the film perfectly. When I heard ‘Waters of March’ by Art Garfunkel waft from my television it wormed its way into my heart immediately and it became one of my key songs if not the song of 2022 for me. More than that though, it became one of my key songs for all time. One of those songs that I listen to all the time, that I turn to when I need to listen to something that centres me and one that I know I’ll listen to in years to come to remind me of this time in my life as I do ‘Pet Sounds’ and ‘Saturday Night, Inside Out’ by the Beach Boys and the Avalanches respectively. ‘Waters of March’ is a song that everytime I hear its opening I smile, I instantly get that hygge feeling that I am forever yearning for and yesterday morning, I got that feeling but from a slight variation of a theme. 

Now, back to Italy and that Italian morning playlist that I was listening to yesterday morning. When I hit play on the playlist the first song that made its way into my headphones sounded slightly familiar and then extremely familiar before it dawned on me what it was. When I looked at the title, I knew what it was, I didn’t need to be able to read Italian to recognise ‘La Pioggia Di Marzo’. That gentle guitar strumming that opens the track that has become a staple in my life was quickly accompanied by the Italian singer Mina’s upbeat vocals, and I fell for the ‘Waters of March’ all over again. One of my favourite things is in music is to hear different interpretations of the same song and to hear the original versions of songs compared to a track that sampled it. I like hearing these variations on a theme because I like seeing the same track from a slightly different point of view and ‘La Pioggia Di Marzo’ delivers that completely here. It is still the ‘Waters of March’, it contains all of the elements that always draw me to the track but here, it feels oh so Italian, not only in its singer’s vocals but in the overall atmosphere of the track. The ‘Waters of March’ makes me think of autumn and winter and so it stands to reason that this version must make me think of the spring and summer as listening to it makes you feel like you are being bathed in the Italian sun. It is a wonderful, no, mervagliso version of one of my favourite songs that I will now be listening to all summer song. 

‘Waters of March’, ‘The Worst Person in The World’, Trickett, Napoli, ‘La Pioggia Di Marzo.’ Everything is connected and there truly is beauty in that.

Stressed: some upcoming life changes that im excited about but also mildly stressed over.

I tend to be a naturally positive person. My family and friends often comment on this. I just dont want to look back on my life and see nothing but days that i ensured were miserable because i couldnt/wouldnt change my attitude. Im more fixated on happiness than i am fixating on the bad.

TRANSPARENCY. Holy shoot. I used to think people were just private and that was admirable. No. being open and HoNeSt is the most beautiful, attractive, loving thing.

I still have the Big Four™ on my plate but tomorrow I hopefully can cross one out even though it’s uncertain whether I will pass my Differential Geometry I & II exam. I haven’t even been this unprepared for my Analysis II & III exam with the same prof. Then he just managed to ask all the right questions. I hope he pulls off something like that tomorrow, too.

The problem is, it’s not going to get better with the following exam next Monday. I have learned even less for these subjects. I haven’t yet looked into the one from last semester and hope its foundations are good (Geometric Group Theory). Also, I did not work through the one from this semester (Coding theory and Cryptography). My plan for that is to do the absolute minimum for Coding and learn GGT really good. Never thought I would have to rely on being good in this subject because I struggled a lot with this subject.

I just have to pass. Even though I have to admit really disliking being really bad, if someone offered me to choose between fail and pass with 4,0 I would definitely pick the 4,0 (a friend of mine was offered the choice between 3,7 and fail, so it has happened...). I fear with the Diffgeo prof one can only fail or get above 2,0 and as I don’t see myself there, well.

Last night, I sent my supervisor the current state of my thesis. When we met last time, she told me to send an update after a week because then she is on holidays for two weeks. I missed that (because of the Bafög issues -.-) and had to do quite much for it and did not want to intrude upon her holidays so I sent it yesterday, but I got an automatic reply saying she’s out of office until the end of August! Now I dearly hope this to be a typing error because, you know, I need some advice on my thesis and she is one of the examinators next Monday. I hope I did not misunderstand her somehow (I am probably overly scared because I have had problems with shit because I did not listen carefully or misunderstand people like that too often.)

Next week, there will be two last ballet classes from the beginners’ intensive. I should probably get her a little something as thank you but I don’t know what people like? It was really cool. I just did not like that when I asked for a mat for some stuff we did lying on our back she told me in front of everyone else I am malnourished and should “stop with whatever [I] am doing”. When we met, I was just out of a shitty relationship where I had practised a looot of emotional eating. Now I am just back to my overall normal. (Even though I guess I have to admit while my weight is probably okay, the thoughts are not (yes yes okay, if the shoe fits, wear it.).) While I appreciate she is looking out for us, she should not have done so in front of the whole class. (Also it had rather the opposite effect, damn.)

Why Elriel is most definitely a Sleeping Beauty Retelling!

Since this was brought up a few days ago I cannot get the idea out my head that Sarah is basing Elriel’s story on Sleeping Beauty, and now we know she hid crumbs in her other books, alongside a quick browse of her pinterest boards it seems more and more likely! Especially since she loves her retellings.

A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora. Yes, they named her after the dawn for she filled their lives with sunshine. 

Listen well, all of you. The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. She'll walk in springtime wherever she goes!

There are so many parallels between Elain and Aurora, they are both beloved by all, kind creatures who thrive in springtime. Aurora is named for after the dawn because she filled their lives with sunshine, A) tell me this isn’t Elain and B) the meaning of her name;

Elaine as a girl's name is of Greek origin meaning "sun ray or shining light".

Yet another parallel is Aurora believing they still treat her as a child, who does that remind you of?

Oh, dear. Why do they still treat me like a child? 

Even if love is full of thorns, I’d still embrace it. I know that in between those thorns there is a rose worth all the pain.

Could this be any more spot on? We have spoken extensively about Elains, not only willingness to get her hands dirty but the pleasure she derives from creating something beautiful from her labour. If this isn’t a metaphor for Azriel and their future situation I don’t know what is... 

This is very important, it keeps getting brought back up in text to show us Elain is going to fight through the bad to get to what she wants. Her hands might bruise and bloody in the process but she will to do it to enjoy the fruits of her labour.

Which leads me to why even further than a Sleeping Beauty retelling I think it will be Elain saving Azriel and breaking a curse/spell. Let us look to SJM’s pinterest board shall we!

These are just a few of the SB reminiscent pins she has saved, one of the more recent ones in the bottom right. Notice it is the girl saving the man, tell me you do not get immediate Elriel vibes from that, the roses, the colours.

There also seems to be a lot of cursed/chained art too, I definitely think something is going to happen to Azriel that Elain has to save him from, my best guess would be Koschei. 

Elain’s story thus far has heavily emphasised on choice, as we have seen through her interactions with Lucien and their bond overall, hence why I think it will be her making the choice to save him rather than him coming for her.

He has already saved her, it is time for her to shine. It would also grant her the opportunity to explore her own agency, and not what is expected of her.

 A ray of hope there still may be in this, the gift I give to thee. Not in death, but just in sleep, the fateful prophecy you’ll keep, and from this slumber you shall wake, when true love’s kiss, the spell shall break.

I think that it is interesting considering she is a seer, that Sleeping Beauty has so many references to visions, fate and so on, after the Azriel POV where we are shown he clearly believes it is fate that three sisters would all fall for three bothers.

Almost like it is... Fate. 

This will be the ultimate moment where Elain gets to decide her future and potentially follow her own fate. Not to mention we know the Cauldron loves Elain and gifted her with her abilities, could this be another tie-in, gifting her the ability to wake/heal Azriel? 

But see the gracious whim of fate - why, 'tis the self-same peasant maid, who won the heart of our noble prince but yesterday. She is indeed, most wondrous fair, gold of sunshine in her hair, Lips that shame the red rose, in ageless sleep, she finds repose. The years roll by, but a hundred years to a steadfast heart, are but a day. And now, the gates of a dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way. Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall! To wake his love, with love's first kiss, and prove that true love conquers all! 

Love’s first kiss? Could this be why she didn’t allow them to kiss in the hallway... Anything is possible but the parallels are certainly interesting at this point you can’t deny! 

Also here are a few more little crumbs she could have been planting through the series, the colours we most see Elain in are pinks and blues and the most run along joke through the movie is her dress being changed from one colour to the other... Nothing major but certainly interesting.

These were by no means the only references to her wearing those colours I am just trying to be brief. 

Not to mention Roses really took a bigger role in ACOSF in regards to associating them with Elain, while she certainly had past references to them before but adding in her fathers gifts and Azriels gift both being roses. Hmmmmmmm.

All I know is that you need to back off. Let's get it cleared up right now- I am not your thing." Cassian cocked his head, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "No?"
