Hi, Anon! My friend, ΩKaiser, helped give as much information as possible. Hopefully Kodansha Comics will continue doing monthly volume releases so that the English version will be up to date. Which volume 3 will be out digitally June 9th. About Shimazu Akihiro:

As far as we know, there’s hints that he’s obsessed with honoring the Shimazu clan. This is based on how he acts like a Spartan with his underlings, and what he told Musashi in either Chapter 63 or 64 about needing to collect heroic feats for his house.

Spanish translations haven’t reached this point yet, but supposedly Naoe is fully aware of the situation with the Shimazu clan. He wishes to support Akihiro on his quest to earn said honor. Which explains why Akihiro acts respectful and polite towards Naoe in contrast to his rude, hard-ass attitude. 

Besides him and his underlings, there was a Shimazu leader who wasn’t exactly a paragon of courage. The leader was willing to bring family feuds with the rest of the alliance. According to Katsumi, Akihiro is most likely a bastard child of the current leader on a desperate quest to prove his worth. His crew could be other ostracized misfits within the clan. It’s possible their backstory was told after the singing oni chapter (chapter 81), so there could be further developments.

      Cour 2 synopsis:

After obtaining the only weapons that can slay oni, Kitetsu Blades, they have taken the first big step towards their dream. In Harima, Musashi's group will encounter the massive band of Uesugui Bushi, and their leader Uesugi Tatsuomi.
