Sucre/Sugar:
Just look at her! She’s a secret boss fight. Possibly a trans girl. Has an ungodly amount of health; the most in the entire game. Was chained up in a basement for years by someone who is ambiguous left as either her brother or lover. Before she starts beating you up she calls you a “little ducky”. One of the only two female characters in the game. This game was super influential to tons of other games (including Undertale) and it turned 15 this year let’s show Sucre some respect.

After Will orphans Abigail, she is committed to a sterile corner of New York state called the Ichabod Centre. There she meets Artemis, a precocious eleven year old arsonist prodigy recently suspended from her boarding school in Amsterdam. Grand Guignol adaptations
Several Grand Guignol plays were abbreviated adaptations of popular movies and books- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Eyes Without a Face, No Orchids for Miss Blandish.  Having now read summaries of over 100 Guignol plays, I have compiled a list of modern horror films I think could be adapted as such, with descriptions of how I think it would go.  
Why am I doing this?  No reason.  Maybe it’s to see if I can boil down horror plots to the Guignol’s “Bad thing is threatened, then it either happens or doesn’t” structure.  Maybe it’s because I overthink things.  Who knows.
Spoilers for various horror films behind the cut.
Hard Candy: A play in two acts.
In act one, a grown man, Jeff, takes a young girl, Hayley, into his house.  She expresses fear at first, due to the recent murder of another young girl, but he is charming and quickly assuages her fear.  He acts seductive, telling her how mature she is for her age, and suggests they drink together.  She mixes the drinks, saying it is safer for her to do so, and when he drinks he falls unconscious.
In act two, he awakens bound to a table.  Hayley reveals that she drugged him, and believes him to have murdered the other young girl.  Jeff tries to convince her of his innocence, but searching his house she finds child pornography and proclaims that he must be prevented from ever hurting another girl.  Taking a knife, she appears to castrate him.  He admits to having loved another young girl once, though he still denies any violence, and Hayley finds the former victim’s phone number and calls her.  Jeff escapes from his bonds, finds that he has not in fact been castrated but simply bound in a painful fashion.  He threatens to kill Hayley, but she tells him that his former “love” is on the way over, and she will run out screaming rape and have him arrested.  On the other hand, if he kills himself, she will leave and let him seem to have an innocent and tragic death.  He confesses that he watched the murdered girl being killed while another man did the act, and Hayley says that is exactly what the other man said before she made him kill himself.  Jeff commits suicide, and Hayley forges a suicide note stating his acts for the woman he loved to find.
American Psycho: A play in three acts.
In act one, Patrick Bateman, a businessman, is at a party with other colleagues.  He expresses violent hatred of them, but they are too drunk and self-centered to notice.  They exchange business cards, and everyone praises those of another man, Paul, while Patrick seethes with jealousy.  Besides the business cards, Paul reveals he was given the business account Patrick wanted.  As the party winds down, Patrick invites Paul to get a drink elsewhere.  Paul believes Patrick to be another businessman, Marcus, and agrees to go.
Act two has the men at a bar, where Patrick drugs Paul’s drink.  Paul continues to think Patrick is Marcus, and thus insults “that douchebag Patrick Bateman” to his face.  Patrick tells Paul that he is insane and has killed people before, but Paul does not register what he says.  With his victim only half-awake from the drug and the drinks, Patrick takes him home.
In act three, Paul is sitting on Patrick’s armchair, around which has been spread paper magazines.  Patrick puts on a cheerful voice as he brags about having drugged his guest, and Paul does not understand.  Patrick turns on the record player, and rhapsodizes about his favorite singer as he dons a clear raincoat.  In one last moment of calm, he opens up to Paul about his despair that the world does not need or notice him, and the constant impulses he has towards violence, but Paul laughs him off.  Patrick brutally murder Paul as the happy music plays.
Reservoir Dogs: A play in one act.
A gang of thieves and a policeman they have taken hostage arrive in a warehouse.  One of the thieves, with the code name Orange, collapses on the floor, having been shot during a fight.  The policeman is tied up and left to be guarded by a thief with the code name Blonde, despite Blonde acting odd and volatile.  When his compatriots (expect for the dying Orange) are gone, Blonde reveals himself as a sadist and tortures the hostage, culminating in cutting his ear off.  Just before he can finally kill the policeman, Orange manages to reach a gun and shoot him, revealing himself as a fellow policeman.
Psycho: A play in one act.
A pretty young woman named Marion arrives at an out of the way hotel run by a handsome but shy man named Norman.  They have dinner together, and he reveals that he is under the thumb of his cruel and controlling mother.  When Marion retires to her room, she can hear Norman arguing with what sounds like a woman, about allowing such “tramps” into their establishment.  She goes to take a shower, and the old mother comes in and stabs her.  The mother turns to the audience, revealing herself to actually be the sadly crazed Norman.
The Wicker Man: A play in three acts.
In act one, a policeman arrives at a small island in response to a letter saying a young girl disappeared.  The people of the island are pagan and practice public sex, which shocks the prudish Christian policeman.  No one will admit that a girl is missing, and all seem preoccupied with their upcoming summer festival.
In act two, the policeman goes to the local library and reads about the religion.  It seems the people of the island burn a wicker statue as a sacrifice to ensure the coming harvest.  He comes to believe that, as the crops failed the previous year, they have imprisoned the local girl and intend to sacrifice her.  When he returns to his room at the local inn, the innkeeper’s daughter attempts to seduce him, but he resists.
In act three, he disguises himself and follows the festival down to the seaside.  There he finds a bound girl and attempts to rescue her.  She calls out, and the citizens of the island seize upon him.  It turns out the girl was never in danger, and the whole thing was an attempt to lure and capture him.  Their leader explains that “the right kind of adult” is a more powerful sacrifice than a child, and the virgin policeman proved himself worthy of the ‘honor’ by resisting the previous night’s seduction.  He is burned alive in the wicker man as the islanders sing.
The Shining: A play in two acts.
In act one, a family- father Jack, mother Wendy, son Danny- arrive at an isolated hotel in the mountains, to watch over it through the winter.  Danny has bad premonitions about the place, and a worker at the hotel warns him that it is haunted.  Other hotel employees reveal that the previous caretaker killed his own family with an axe, but Jack accepts the job anyway.
In act two, Jack is shown to have become increasingly erratic during the winter.  He is abrasive and violent when his wife tries to talk to him and his son pleads to leave.  He can be heard having conversations with someone who is not there, presumably a ghost.  Danny contacts the worker who warned him, and the man comes back to rescue him, but Jack kills him with an axe.  Either driven mad by the mountain isolation or possessed by the previous caretaker, Jack chases Wendy and Danny with the axe.  They escape with the car, and he freezes to death in the mountain snow.
A Clockwork Orange: A play in one act.
Alex, a young delinquent, is the subject of an experimental treatment to cure the youth of their criminal tendencies.  He is tortured while people enact scenes of sex and violence, so he will forever associate those things with pain.  The bourgeois doctors congratulate themselves on their success when Alex cannot manage to raise a hand against them without being sick.  He pleads that he will now be vulnerable and unable to fight back against other criminals, but the doctors throw him out in this state nonetheless.
Byzantium: A play in one act.
(Modified significantly because the Guignol didn’t really do outright supernatural horror.)
An innocent young girl is paid for and taken from her orphanage by an older man.  He reveals that her mother, whom the girl thought had died, is actually alive and has been sending money for her upkeep.  The man, a criminal, had previously forced the girl’s mother into a brothel, but she proceeded to use her charm and cleverness to rise higher in the gang than he himself, and he is now on the outs with them.  The man says he will now punish the daughter for the mother’s transgressions, and attempts to rape her.  Suddenly, from the shadows, a woman leaps out with a knife and stabs him repeatedly.  She reveals herself to be the girl’s mother, and takes her daughter away from the orphanage that did not protect her, so she may instead be raised as a criminal and heir to the gang.

Salem Horror Fest examines American fear with a month-long celebration of terror and social justice partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum
  SALEM, Ma. – Salem Horror Fest, in partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum and CinemaSalem, today announced four weeks of screenings, parties, concerts, panels and exhibits that explore societal themes of fear and anxiety in horror at the Halloween capital of the world; Salem, MassachusettsAmidst the notorious backdrop of the 1692 Witch Trials, the festival will feature a city-wide program set to kick off at the Peabody Essex Museum on Thursday, September 21 as part of the PEM/PM evening party series in conjunction with their upcoming exhibit “It’s Alive” Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection.
“We live in fear. Fear of failure, commitment, each other and beyond. It’s one of the few things that unites us all. Salem knows this more than most,” said festival director Kevin Lynch. “The cinema is a graveyard of cultural reflections trapped in time like a celluloid ouija board. If we are to overcome fear, we must first understand it.”
Following the Opening Night Party on Thursday, September 21, Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) will accept the first-ever Salem Horror Award on behalf of Duane Jones for his cultural contribution to the genre as one of the first positive representations of a person of color on the big screen in George A. Romero’s 1968 Night of the Living Dead.
A concert performance by queer, negro-gothic soprano M Lamar will be held at Ames Hall on Friday, September 22 featuring a program The New York Times called an “otherworldly, goth-tinged projection into the distant future of our violent, racially and sexually charged present offering a space of melancholic, alluring, ultimately stirring reflection.”
Four films will be screened in the PEM’s Morse Auditorium with panel discussions exploring subtextual themes of cultural fear found in Night of the Living Dead, Matinee, Gods & Monsters, and The Haunting.

Following the Haunted Happenings Parade on Thursday, October 5, CinemaSalem will host Wicked Shorts, a free evening of short films in consideration for the first annual Orlok Award, named in honor of Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery’s 10th anniversary.
The second half of the festival will screen seven double features at CinemaSalem that feature social themes such as racism, misogyny, gay panic, media manipulation, and xenophobia in films like Get Out, People Under the Stairs, Tragedy Girls, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, American Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Mist, They Live, Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Cruising, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, Videodrome, Let the Right One In, and Fright Night.
