The second-generation Mercedes‑AMG GT Coupé is the new top model offered by Mercedes‑AMG. It combines highly dynamic driving characteristics with increased suitability for everyday use.
At market launch, the new AMG GT Coupé will be launched with two performance levels of the AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine. The engines are assembled entirely by hand at the company’s site in Affalterbach according to the „One Man, One Engine“ principle.

When this Mustang rolled out of Dearborn in 1988, people were rocking out to the latest singles from George Michael, INXS, and Rick Astley. The Sega Genesis was laying the groundwork for the next generation of gaming (and the Bit Wars that quickly followed). Folks toiling away in the corporate cogs of business were unwrapping the very first versions of Microsoft Office. Stephen Hawking’s bestselling A Brief History of Time was expanding minds one page at a time. Television sets were still dialed into NBC and ABC for The Crosby Show and Roseanne, respectively. Gas cost an average of $0.90/gal. A typical worker pulled an annual salary of $19,238. A car like this would cost $12,745.
In 1988, the Mustang GT made all of 225 HP, 300 lb-ft of torque, and could reach 60 in 6.1 seconds.

The Fox Body may have been a reserved, simple, and - dare I say - normal car relative to its other Mustang counterparts, but it’s one that has stood the test of time like no other.
After spending 3 years with this one, it’s easy to see why; it’s a charismatic little gem. A real charmer on the road, with manners and character far forgotten by today’s inflated sports coupes, big numbers muscle cars, and tech-centric arrangements.
While a modern sports car it is not, the Fox Body represented a clear departure from the build-it-bigger and “no replacement for displacement” mindset that had fueled American car production for so long; it was a relatively compact, lightweight, nimble, and tossable design.
Steps were taken to refine the drive with a well-tuned MacPhearson strut front suspension, and Ford’s innovative QuadraShock system that damped movements in multiple directions to mitigate wheel hop, bounce, roll, and ungainly weight transfer.
It was a collected car that could be thrown into a corner and be expected to pull its way out with minimal effort. Oversteer was far more controlled. Ride height was lowered, engines breathed better and fueled more efficiently, and there was little fuss all around.
But the real kicker is that it did all of this in a decidedly analog way - there were still no electronic limiters, governors, traction or stability programs, drive-by-wire, or intrusions of any sorts. It was very much a WYSIWYG type of deal, and it was all the better for it.
For the folks that have driven them, and for the people that have driven with me, they’re often unexpectedly delighted with just how much fun they can have with so little numbers and creature comforts! And indeed, even with far more “special” cars in my corral, including Jags, Maseratis, AMGs, MGs, MINIs, and more, this Mustang still stands out as one of the most entertaining drivers, period.

Can any vehicle, real or imaginary, compete with the Batmobile? As far as Batman is concerned there’s only one answer—the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6.
No, the futuristic concept car wasn’t the winner of a recent poll of the Caped Crusader’s most auto-obsessed fans. Instead, it’s the vehicle his alter ego, billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, will drive in the upcoming Flash movie.
Wayne’s love of the sleek speed machine was revealed in some candid photos from the set of Warner Bros. and DC’s latest superhero movie that were posted to Twitter by YouTuber Grace Randolph over the weekend. The pictures show Michael Keaton, returning to the role for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns, dressed in a snazzy suit just feet away from his even more stylish ride. If you’re wondering why Keaton is appearing in the film after nearly three decades away from the role, it’s because the movie will feature inter-dimensional travel as a key plot point (Ben Affleck will also appear as Batman/Wayne).

What a car Gotham’s most famous resident has chosen for himself. First unveiled as a coupé at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2016 (and again as a cabriolet the next year), the car stretches nearly 20 feet from bumper to bumper and features a head-turning Art Deco-inspired body and a spaceship-like interior. Under the hood is a fully electric drivetrain capable of generating 750 horses and launching the car from zero to 60 in under four seconds. One interesting thing about Wayne’s Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is that it appears to be finished in a glossy black or midnight blue coupé. The vehicle has previously only been shown off as a red coupé or a blue convertible.
Of course, the appearance of the Vision 6 in the movie isn’t all that surprising. Warner Brothers and Mercedes have a long-running placement deal, according to The Drive. Two of the automakers cars—the E-Class Cabriolet and AMG Vision GT—were featured in the studio’s last superhero extravaganza, 2017’s Justice League. Still, product placement or not, the Vision 6 does seem like the sort of car an unimaginably wealthy thrillseeker like Wayne would use as an everyday driver.

Pop culture obsessives may remember another Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 cameo from the last year: Drake drove the dazzling car in the video for his 2020 single “Laugh Now, Cry Later.” But unlike his comic book counterpart, the rapper managed to get his hands on two examples of the concept—the coupé and the cabriolet.

First Look: The Austro Daimler Bergmeister ADR 630 Shooting Grand
Established in 1899, Austro Daimler was a historically significant Austro-Hungarian automaker, who, at one stage in 1910, held the honor of making the world’s fastest car – the 85mph Prinz Heinrich. Outbreak of the First World War saw the company focus on contribution to the wartime effort and so it wasn’t until the 1930s that Austro Daimler reverted to the production of automobiles with some outstanding and innovative luxury vehicles leaving its production-line. One such vehicle and the last to come out of the factory in 1931 was the 6-cylinder ‘Bergmeister’ or ‘Mountain Master’ so-called because of its numerous successes in mountain races. Fast forward nearly 90 years as we present its spiritual heir, the new ADR 630 Shooting Grand.
With its long, sweeping bonnet, short rear overhang and gullwing doors, the new car’s styling is both innovative and striking. Thanks to an intelligent lightweight design, aluminum space frame and sophisticated, ground-breaking technology, Austro Daimler were able to achieve a curb weight of 1650kg which is impressive when considering the size of the car; 4,544mm long, 2,087mm wide and with a wheelbase of 2,636.95mm.
At its heart is the SERIPA Performance Hybrid powertrain which was specially developed for the new Bergmeister. Combining the Mercedes-AMG GT 3-Liter in-line 6 with three high-performance electric motors, it is a superbly efficient unit which generates a staggering 1,198 bhp and 1,180 lb. ft; enough to propel it from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 200 mph. The bulk of the power is derived from the electric motors, each producing 271 bhp and providing charge is a 55-kilowatt lithium-ion battery. The battery sits in the area normally reserved for the GT's trunk hence a shooting break body was designed to provide the necessary storage space. Based on the principle of a plug-in hybrid, the battery for the 600 kW electric drive of the new Bergmeister can be loaded with up to 150 kW charging power, meaning that under purely electric propulsion, it has a range of up to 250km and a total range (according to WLTP cycle) of up to 1,000km.

In the GT55 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption 14.1 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions 319 g/km), the V8 unit develops an output of 350kW (476hp) and a maximum torque of 700Nm. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes 3.9 seconds, and the top speed is 295km/h.

That mission has evolved over time, though, and M models have leaned more into comfort, tech features, and style in recent years: M4 is one of the most compelling sport-luxury cars on the planet. No exaggeration. It has sublime handling, a stellar engine and a civilized disposition. When the M4 arrived in 2014, it promised much, but didn't quite deliver. However, subsequent revisions, including the creation of the limited-run M4 GTS and the sharper M4 CS, have seen the M4 finally deliver the performance and handling that it originally promised. The BMW M4 is effectively an M3 Coupe by another name. It's a fast, engaging and hugely desirable sports car, and it even offers a dose of practicality for those who occasionally need to carry luggage or rear-seat passengers.For ma ny purists, the M4's turbocharged engine can't match the last car's naturally aspirated V8 for drama and character. Yet, look past the artificial soundtrack and you'll discover a truly great set-up. It delivers the sort of pace that will have supercar owners looking nervously in their rear-view mirror, yet is far more efficient than the unit it replaces. Power comes from a 425-hp twin-turbo inline-six, with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and rear-wheel drive. The Competition package increases power output to 444 ponies but it adds nearly $5000 to the bottom line. Our M4 Competition test car with the seven-speed automatic zipped from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, the same time it took its main rival, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S coupe. The ride is firm but the driver is paid back for the abuse with genuine agility on twisty roads. At the track, the M4 can be dropped into the Sport+ mode where it will devour corners and blast down straightaways with the best of them. The M4 shares its interior with the decidedly less racy and far less expensive 4-series two-doors and the 3-series four-door sedan. That means good build quality but a relatively uninspired design that looks particularly dour in all black. Luckily, BMW offers three two-tone interior options—Sonoma Beige, Silverstone, and Sakhir Orange—to spice things up a bit. The rear seat is less spacious than the sedan but can still fit two adults in a pinch; the trunk space is generous for a coupe and fits four carry-on suitcases. The M4's sport seats are supportive and comfortable, and the driving position is perfect for spirited motoring. All M4 models come with BMW's iDrive infotainment system, a Harman/Kardon audio system, and several driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection; automatic high-beam headlamps, a head-up display, a 360-degree exterior camera system, and a self-parking feature are also available as part of the optional Executive package. The standard car gets glossy, carbon-fibre detailing inside, with a widescreen 8.8-inch display for the iDrive system. There’s a head-up display on offer, too, with two configurable ‘M’ driving modes, while the seats give excellent support for faster driving thanks to inflatable side bolsters. Our only real criticism is that with some parts carried over from cheaper BMW saloons, the M4 doesn’t feel quite as special as some cars in this class. That said, the Competition Pack versions are given a lift courtesy of even more heavily bolstered front seats and seat belts that get the M Sports stripe woven into the webbing. The rest of the cabin is pure 4 Series, which does means a thoughtfully laid-out dash, high-grade materials and excellent build quality. Plus, the low-slung driving position is perfect. The standard equipment count extends to sat-nav, a DAB radio, climate control and heated seats. As with other 4 Series Convertible variants, the drop-top M4 gets a three piece folding metal hardtop. 2020 BMW M5 Competition First Drive Review | It's a mad mad mad mad sedan

  MONTICELLO, New York –– The M5 Competition needs a better name. The “Hammer” has been done. C’mon, Dodge has its colorful Hellcats and Demons. Yes, BMW is a sober German luxury brand, but appending “Competition” to the name and decklid of the standard M5 is too subtle for a midsize sedan that can nip a 647-hp Ford GT supercar to 60 mph (BMW says it’ll do the deed in 3.1 seconds, but Car and Driver timed a regular M5 at 2.8 seconds, so it’s almost assured that it’ll beat the GT’s 3 second time. – Ed.), and its claimed 10.9-second quarter-mile is just 0.1 seconds behind the Ford, or the 797-hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye. That’s madness, or in German, Der Wahnsinn. (Hey, maybe that’s the name!) The M5 Competition’s 617 horsepower (17 more than the M5) and 553 pound-feet of torque is equally Wahnsinn, as I discover during laps at my local stomping grounds, the Monticello Motor Club in New York’s Catskills. To the untrained eye, this M5 might be any other 5 Series, that longtime upholder of the luxury sedan status quo. Trained eyes will spot that Competition badging – optional on front fenders, in case you’d prefer to stay stealthy – with higher-volume air intakes and gloss black applied to the kidney grille, mirror caps, fender gills, rear Gurney lip and apron diffuser. There are also 20-inch lightweight forged alloys and four black-tipped exhaust outlets. After multiple stairsteps in power and price from your basic 530i – from $54,395 and a 248-hp turbo four, to $110,995 and a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 – the M5 Competition helps advance the (somewhat pointless) arms race in sport sedans, provoking both the 603-hp Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, and the 605-hp Audi RS7 Performance.

The last time I drove the standard M5, I was staging an Escape from New York when a wheel was mangled by an evil pothole on Manhattan’s West Side Highway. Day trip, spoiled. This time, I was determined to make it to Monticello in one piece, because this baby is even stiffer: Springs and hydraulic dampers are 10 percent firmer than the regular M5’s, the rear anti-roll bar is stiffened, and it’s 0.28 inches lower. For better wheel guidance at the rear, the toe link’s rubber mounts are exchanged for ball joints. BMW says the tauter core can be felt even in the car’s Comfort mode, and the morning’s jouncy run on the ancient, hand-cut Belgian blocks of my Brooklyn street seems to confirm it. The M5 makes its entrance through Monticello’s artistically wrought metal gates, flashing an equally classy paint called Donington Grey Metallic. I sign the clipboard sheet proffered by the guard, peering through the BMW’s generous windshield at the rain-dampened 4.1-mile circuit. I’ve enjoyed the adjustable embrace of the BMW’s sport seats, clad in handsome saddle-colored “Aragon” Merino hides. Here, evidence of the M division’s handiwork is subtle, including red-and-blue striped M seatbelts. Round digital gauges flash concentric rings of animation as you approach the 7,000 RPM redline. This more driver-centric M5 sports digital gauges that are an homage to classic, analog BMW dials, which I prefer to the wraparound displays of the “Live Cockpit Professional” that makes its 5 Series debut on the 2020 M5 35 Years Edition. I ease into the paddock and clubhouse garage, where track-suited club members are futzing with roll-caged, race-prepped exotics. One or two seem to cast side-eye at the BMW and its pilot, perhaps wondering why anyone would take this 4,370-pound, all-wheel-drive barge onto the track. Some will soon pay for their insolence, when the BMW applies its unfair horsepower advantage to leave peashooter Porsches in its 617-hp wake. Like the M5, the Competition’s other secret weapon is an M-tuned AWD system and active rear differential, which together banish old-school wheelspin, seemingly no matter how hard you try to break things loose.

The track is still drying when I’m first waved out of the pits, with scary-looking lagoons lurking in places. For all its fierceness and technology, the BMW feels a bit squishy and vague at first, especially in the wet. But AWD is the new secret sauce of any new M5. For max performance in any situation, just set-and-forget the 4WD Sport mode, which sends more torque rearward and applies a freer algorithm to stability systems. After years of testing M cars, I’ve made peace with their somewhat fussy controls that here include individual settings for the steering, suspension, exhaust and eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission. Twiddling has become easier since BMW added two ruby-colored steering wheel switches – labeled M1 and M2 – to store a pair of your preferred combinations of settings. For the suspension, I select the Sport mode that BMW perfected for Nürburgring’s pockmarked Nordschleife circuit. The company recommends Sport Plus for creamier, Grand Prix-style surfaces. Compared to the M5, the Competition also gets a firmer link to the aluminum-and-carbon structure through engine mounts with increased spring rates, which BMW says creates faster engine response and sharper corner turn-in. Um, if you say so. Increased camber for the front axle does help this big barge absorb lateral forces through its Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires. That’s a good thing in tight sections like the esses that zig uphill just after MMC’s longest straight. As for that mildly kinked, mile-long gauntlet – which I’ve long used as a no-excuses benchmark for accelerative might – the M5’s bombastic power rockets it to around 159 mph, only about 11 or 12 mph less than my apogee in supercars like the McLaren 675LT or Ferrari 488. So yeah, it’s fast. Peak torque is served anywhere between 1,800 and 5,800 rpm, a 200-rpm wider band than the M5. The BMW’s gold-caliper, carbon ceramic brakes, an $8,500 option, help keep fade at bay, even at these Autobahn speeds – though they do begin to smell (but not smoke) after seven or eight consecutive laps.

Chris Duplessis, the former pro rally champion and all-purpose nutjob who’s MMC’s track director, has coincidentally been driving an M5 as a safety car. I let Duplessis take one of his usual half-sideways excursions around the circuit, and he concurs: The Competition perhaps feels a skosh tauter than the basic M5, and turns with more alertness, but it would take a back-to-back drive to tease out tangible differences. Aside from this Competition’s stony ride on poor pavement, and the Sturm und Drang as it boomed over freeway expansion strips, my only everyday gripe was a climate system that was stingy about dialing up the fan speed, even when I set the A/C to extremely low temperatures. Some drivers have groused that the standard M5 sounds too demure, and the Competition does amp up the soundtrack through its twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust. Hit the console’s exhaust switch, and the BMW speaks softly without dropping its big stick. Press it again, and this M5 sounds like a pissed-off bear that’s been woken from hibernation, including belching exhaust backfires. This M5 still doesn’t match the psychotic bellow of the Mercedes-AMG E 63, but it’s plenty aggressive for all but the most attention-seeking owner. So is the BMW fun on track? Yes, in a mildly silly, tiger-shark-out-of-water fashion. But it’s twice as fun on the street, where the M5 Competition underscores its Autobahn-style ferocity and magisterial handling. Mopar fans may howl, but in most street situations, the M5 Competition will easily smoke even a Dodge Challenger Hellcat from a stoplight – minus the smoke. Where even skilled drivers can struggle to launch the rear-driven Hellcat without the tires lighting up like Cheech and Chong, the BMW sends every molecule of rubber and scrap of torque to the pavement.

So, what’s it gonna cost? At $110,995, the Competition is an extra $7,300 over the base M5. Options, including the pricey carbon-ceramic stoppers, boosted my test car’s freight to a heady $132,095. Departing Monticello, I briefly switch into the car’s notorious, tire-abusing 2WD mode, the one that seems designed to stem the kvetching of BMW fans over the brand’s Good Old Days. For a minute or three, it is fun to drive the BMW like it’s a Dodge, only with exponentially more agility and control, exiting corners with smoke flaring from those poor Pirellis. The only dumb part is that you have to switch off stability control entirely to send all 617 horses to the back – with only modestly wide 285/35 R20 tires – which will at least make one appreciate the stability control's safety net even more. But catapulted along Cold Spring Road near the track, a ribbony dream that twists through tall stands of pine and spruce, the M5 Competition is just an embarrassment of riches: Drive it harder, then harder still. VISION EQXX – record-breaking electric research vehicle on pilgrimage to Goodwood Fresh from its second 1,000 km+ road trip on a single battery charge, the most efficient Mercedes ever built visits Goodwood to pay homage to its motorsports roots by taking a run up the famous hill. Before making the pilgrimage to the Festival of Speed, the all-electric VISION EQXX had travelled 1,202 kilometres from Stuttgart to the home of British motor racing in Silverstone and onwards to Brixworth, the HQ of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains. Throughout the road trip, the VISION EQXX took advantage of its innovative thermal management system to achieve an average consumption of 8.3 kWh/100 km in the face of heavy traffic and summer temperatures. Waiting in Silverstone to greet it were the Formula 1 and Formula E experts who helped develop its advanced, highly efficient drivetrain as well as special guest driver Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman, who races for the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team, drove surely his most efficient laps ever in a road car on the track at Silverstone before the VISION EQXX set off on the final leg to Brixworth. Developed from scratch to road-going vehicle in less than two years, the VISION EQXX achieved a world first in April when it drove 1,008 kilometres from Sindelfingen to Cassis on the French Riviera with energy consumption of 8.7 kWh/100 km and a remaining range on arrival around 140 kilometres. While efficiency features such as the slippery drag coefficient of 0.17, low-rolling-resistance tyres and solar panels on the roof may not be put to the test on the VISION EQXX’s short drive up the hill at Goodwood, these and many other of its efficiency innovations have already proven their worth twice over long distances on public roads. Mercedes-Benz Classic at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022 Mercedes-Benz Classic makes it possible to experience the company’s unique brand and product history dating back to the invention of the automobile in 1886.
