Belle: Ghosts & Goblins
Tumblr media
Belle:  Ghosts ੬ Goblins Zenescope Entertainment 2020 Written by Dave Franchini Illustrated by Igor Vitorino Coloured by Adriano Augusto Lettered by Kurt Hathaway    Legendary beast hunter, Anabelle “Belle” DiMarco, has always stuck to the shadows to protect the world from its unknown nightmares. But when those terrors start gruesomely murdering residents of a Philadelphia neighborhood, the police are left at a loss. Belle will need to take this string of murders into her own hands, and what creatures she finds behind it are unlike anything she has ever encountered!    Folks I am going to say this loud and clear, this is what a superhero comic book should look like!  We have a heroine who fights the evils in the world, which are oftentimes from the Mythological world we have realised exists with our own.  Zenescope has grown into a house that puts out books which are true to their roots and now feature some of the most amazing storytelling creators around.  This is the kind of book I wanna read, Belle actually beats out Batgirl and Batwoman for me and Robyn Hood is so much better than Green Arrow, so if you think I’m mistaken or full of it, you obviously haven’t read these series.  Read them and then tell me I'm way off base, I dare you.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is beautifully presented and constantly moves the story forward.  Nothing in this feels forced or unnatural and you get what Belle feels and easily empathise with her. The character development that we see here is pretty spectacular!  From the standpoint that with each outing we see more and more of her personality emerge and that feeling of isolation that made her build up such walls are beginning to come down.  I think Mel is good for her and we need to find more of those she can trust to help her really open up.  Still the way we see her is something we can relate to and empathise with so the reader can easily connect with her.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see just how well everything here works together to create the story’s ebb & flow.    The interiors here are impeccable!  The linework is phenomenal and how the varying weights and techniques are utilised to highlight all this detail work is stunning.  I mean that Banshee on page two forget about it.  Plus with the utilisation of the backgrounds we see and feel how the characters are either closed in in a space or with the wide open air and all of it just enhances the moments.  It also brings us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented and impressive eye for storytelling.  The colour work is amazing to see.  The way we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is gorgeous.  That there are more techniques involved in laying down the colour so from the blocking to the gradation what we see being done is exceptional work.     Since her debut Belle has consistently risen through the ranks of characters whom I wild.  blindly follow.  She is a strong female lead who relies upon her smarts, her friends and her training to do what needs done.  There are not many who could sustain this reputation for long and I like and appreciate that she doesn’t rely upon her feminine wiles to defeat an enemy.  With some great layering of the subplots and personal feelings this is one of today’s best and brightest characters that you’ll find in comics.

Belle Oath of Thorns #2
Tumblr media
Belle Oath of Thorns #2 Zenescope Entertainment 2019 Written by Dave Franchini Illustrated by Derlis Santacruz Coloured by Juan Manuel Rodriguez Lettered by Kurt Hathaway     PART 2 OF 6     After her life was recently turned upside down, things have finally started to settle for Anabelle “Belle” DiMarco. Now, working with the organization known as C.H.I.P., she has more allies than she has ever had in her war against the beasts who threaten mankind. But with her new allies comes a new mission, and the price she will be asked to pay may not be worth the cost.     Oh I am really into this series and while Belle may not be in love with the Beast she is quickly becoming one of my favourite new characters. She got an attitude for days and personally I love that and since this is all new for her she's not also so ready to trust these folks fully. Which is a good thing because what we see, and the sweet words of placation doesn't always add up to anything at all. This weariness on her part is something that I hope we see more of as this arc continues.     Dave is doing this amazing job telling this story and how he manages to utilise the story & plot development and the character development in such sync with one another. The way that we learn information and see twists and turns along the way as the pacing picks all this up and moves it all forward creates this beautiful ebb & flow. The opening is kind of crazy but I like it because it encompasses everything I have said so far and more. It draw you in, intrigues you and makes you wonder what the heck is going on and makes you want to read on.     There are some stellar moments when we see the characterisation taking a turn we may or may not appreciate and I think those are the moments when Dave nails it and ensures that the reader will come back time and again. Why?, simple because he simultaneously engages the readers' mind so that they are completely invested.     The linework that we are seeing here is exceptional work. The attention to detail that we see through the varying weights of the linework is top notch stuff. The faces and facial expressions that we see throughout really add an extra layer of characterisation that words alone cannot do. Now I want to see more backgrounds pure and simple I know Derlis can do that so the blank spaces really need to end because I like the attention to detail, I like the way they expand the moments and bring a really nice size and scope to the book. The colour work is really rather beautifully done as well. I like the way that light sources are utilised to create shading in the hues and tones of the colours as well as shadows.     Belle is a standout book that fits perfectly into the Zenescope Universe. Granted I don't want to see the normal women find their way into her life but Red would be a welcome exception, more so if her team were somehow involved as well and since inter-agency rivalries are always interesting here's hoping that at some point we'll get to see that. Otherwise this whole Monster Hunter gig is good reading and while I don't trust C.H.I.P. for now and until the big shake up comes I am just going to grab me a bucket of popcorn and watch what happens next!      With the way the storytelling is going with the story & plot development and the characterisation wrapped up in these gorgeous interiors let the world know that this book is the big leagues people so are at the game and if not you'd best get your ticket now!

Belle: Oath of Thorns #1 Zenescope Entertainment 2019 Written by Dave Franchini Illustrated by Igor Vitorino & Derlis Santacruz Coloured by Juan Manuel Rodriguez Lettered by Kurt Hathaway     PART 1 OF 6     After her life was recently turned upside down, things have finally started to settle for Anabelle “Belle” DiMarco. Now, working with the organisation known as C.H.I.P., she has more allies than she has ever had in her war against the beasts who threaten mankind. But with her new allies comes a new mission, and the price she will be asked to pay may not be worth the cost.     I like what Dave is doing with this franchise thus far. The first arc leads into the second and yet if you haven’t read the first one, then you really should, it’s not a problem you can still follow along with what’s happening here. So that it’s new reader friendly is great and it’s a wonderful way to keep being able to entice new readers while still being able to simply catch those of us who have read it. Then there’s the way that he is able to merge this high tech hunting operation with mythical creatures that shouldn’t exist, though we know they do because of that Monster Island series.     I love the way this is structured. The way that we open with action and end with a cliffhanger moment all has this way of coming across beautifully. Though side note to proofreader/editor page 10 last panel read what she says did should be done. With the story & plot development we have a few questions and raised eyebrows that intrigue the reader, who then takes the possibilities off the page and into their own mind looking for possible scenarios and that my friends is the sign of a good writer. To lead the reader off the page naturally so they think of what ifs means that you’ve gotten the reader to become invested in the book and the story.     With the story we get some great pacing and insertion of flashbacks which further the character development, characterisation and help bring us closer to understanding Belle better. This is the kind of stuff that Zenescope has been doing lately and it’s intelligent, interesting and well thought out & executed storytelling that moves away from cheesecake for it’s own sake. This is more in line with proper comic super-heroines and what they do and it’s absolutely delightful to see.      The linework here is utterly marvellous and the attention to detail that is brought out in how the varying weights are being utilised is phenomenal. I mean the chamber, the creatures, the pattern in the floor or the overall way that backgrounds come to life as much as faces and facial expressions do. This is some first class solid work going on here and it takes this to a new level of serious artwork. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong and talented eye for storytelling. I like the colour work here and how we see light sources being utilised to create shading and shadows. Colour blocking is very prevalent in how the separation of colour is done but there are moments that I feel as if there is some colour gradation going on as well. The way it’s all utilised to bring out the most impact is executed extremely well.      There are so many questions, so many clues and all of them seem to point in a direction that is going to bode well for Belle. If she can tear her focus away from her brother and his curse as well as her Uncle Louis long enough to spot them. Then there’s Mel and her involvement in all this and is she working with the organisation or is she more on the side back-up for Belle doesn’t really want to feel responsible for. All in all it’s like that secret military style organisation that no one is supposed to know exists and that always, always means trouble. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

Belle: Kill Zone
Tumblr media
Belle: Kill Zone Zenescope Entertainment 2021 Written by Dave Franchini Illustrated by Alvaro Feliu, Luca Colandrea, Eman Casallos    & Igor Vitorino Inked by Thiago Gomes Coloured by Juan Manuel Rodriguez Lettered by Taylor Esposito    Ares is the god of war, a leader of armies and the bringer of death wherever he goes. Anabelle “Belle” DiMarco is a human, a hunter of beasts and a defender of those who cannot defend themselves. War is coming and you won’t want to miss this blood-soaked issue where the battle is brought to Belle’s doorstep. Will she be able to defend all she holds dear or will she fall like the countless others?    Alright I’m going to start with a mini rant first to get it off my chest, 32 pages is nothing to brag about and it certainly doesn’t warrant this price point, 48 pages sure I can see and totally respect that page count for this price point but honestly I feel like i’m getting a bit ripped off otherwise.  Now the good news is that the story is fantastic and it helps to usher back into prominence a much beloved and missed character in Ares.  But is this the Ares we knew or something else entirely?  This is Belle’s first encounter with the God of War and it certainly lives up to the hype because it really is a strong and entertaining issue.    I am enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information are presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does wonders in fleshing out the personalities we see.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more intrigued we become.      I have to say that I am liking how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story begin to emerge and grow.  I am also liking the way that these layers open up new avenues to be explored, such as Ares himself or those warriors from Oz.  This not only engages the reader nicely but it also adds some great depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is impeccably handled.    Now I wish we’d see the artwork that opens the book all the way throughout the book.  At the very least something that had a similar style to it.  The work in the opening is dynamic, interesting and full of beautiful linework and that pinup page of The Cyclops, and his hammer oh yeah that is bloody amazing.  I do wish we’d see backgrounds utilised a lot more; they are great for expanding and enhancing the moments.   How we see the composition within the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show some very good solid eyes for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a sensational eye for how colour works.  Also massive shout out to Thiago for his inking here and making the linework standout as much as it does.     I’m a huge Belle fan and we really need to see some genuine limited series featuring her so that we can delve into what’s going on in her life and the possible betrayal of her Mel, if that’s still a thing, not to mention a chance to proactive instead of reactive like she’s been now that she knows there’s a bigger picture she needs to look at.  Some really strong, solid writing and great characterisation wrapped in these interiors really makes me want to see oh so much more.

Belle in Headless Horseman
Tumblr media
Belle in Headless Horseman Zenescope Entertainment 2021 Written by Dave Franchini Illustrated by Julius Abrera Coloured by Juan Manuel Rodriguez Lettered by Taylor Esposito of Ghost Glyph Studios    From stories that span centuries, the Headless Horseman has roamed woods and battlefields seeking the lives of those who have strayed from the fight taking that, which he no longer has, their heads. As some legends are made, others are born, and Anabelle “Belle” DiMarco happens to be so lucky. Descended from a bloodline of hunters of beasts and otherworldly creatures, she is destined to take on those that creep from the shadows, reaching into our world waiting for a hero to battle them back. So what happens when a beast hunter meets a horseman? Find out here when legends collide!    As much as I enjoy seeing these one-shots, we really need to see some limited series already.  This one and done just don’t allow for the room for the story, characterisation and world building to really take place, instead we get snippets that do nothing more than wet the appetite without doing a whole heck of a lot.  Also 32 pages is nothing why advertise that, sure 48 to 72 pages would be much better and allow for more story and background information to be shown.      With all this having been said I do like the way Dave is telling this story.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well.  The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter help to bring their personalities to the forefront.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story and the cast of characters the more I am left wanting.      How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge and grow are well thought out and executed.  The trio of witches whom we’ve seen before, though even I have a hard time recalling the exact story, keep us guessing when we’ll see them again.  The depth, dimension and complexity these avenues add to the story is fantastic.  The way that we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is extremely well achieved.    The interiors here are really rather lovely.  The linework that we see is fantastic and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create the level & quality of the detail work we see within the pages is astonishing.  That we see backgrounds being utilised throughout makes me a happy camper as they really enhance and expand the moments.  They also work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a spectacular eye for how colour works and how to maximise their effects.     I do like the concept behind this story and how we see it come to life.  The legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman is one that’s been around longer than I have and to see Belle getting to face such a supernatural creature is actually pretty darn thrilling.  There are a finite amount of new monsters to be faced so by seeing some other fables, fairy tales or even myths & legends being explored in these pages makes complete sense.  Though I am waiting for Peyton, The Black Knight, to become something of an Oracle for Belle as well and seeing how the characters expand and become more interconnected.  In the meantime so long as Dave has stories to tell I'll be here.
