Once again, I'm rereading Neal Stephenson's Anathem
Sooo: a small selection of illustrations
The first reading: AAH, WHERE AM I, WHO AM I, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO UNDERSTAND IT AT ALL???
second reading: Oh, now it seems to have become clearer, hmm, even beautiful and smart thoughts, quite deep
third reading: WHAT THE HELL ARE PARALLEL UNIVERSES MOVING IN TIME? FOR? WHOM????
fourth reading: haha monks scientists are cool😚😘🥰
don't pay attention to the signature, it's old😓

I like erasmas anathem bc he is just some guy and a little bit fail but also legitimately smart but also has an inferiority complex and seems to think that the sexiest thing a girl can be is mind-bendingly smart (he’s right about this)

you seem to have fundamentally misunderstood me, Fraa Erasmas.  Go read all 5,640 posts in their original Old Orth

listening to anathem audiobook means it's taken me until googling it now to realize the religion is bazian, not bayesian

Note
the only good book neal stephenson ever wrote was anathem
I can't find a good summary of it that doesn't make it sound like some long pseudo-philosophical treatise full of neologisms so I can't say I'm convinced yet. You'll have to sell me on it.

Also it really needs a cover that isn't a shitty photobash

Me, crushed under the weight of a jillion projects: I should write a His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman crossover with Anathem by Neal Stephenson fic because both have such delightful takes on science and the idea of infinite worlds and ways that some people can go between them
I won't get around to it but HDM fans if you want to read a really good book with similar themes check out Anathem. Anathem fans if you wanna read some charming books with mad science and weird devices check out His Dark Materials

@kingfucko replied to your post “Title: Anathem Author: Neal Stephenson Rating: 5/5 stars Here I was thinking about starting another Stephenson reading, but...”
Anathem is about math
It is not about math, but in the story math is actually a pretty important thing that is a necessary component of the protagonist's worldview. (Not quite the same as it would be in real life, since he has powers that make "just do more math" a more plausible course of action than is probably true.)

Tired: learning the history of philosophy the usual way through books about philosophy on Earth
Wired: exclusively learning the history of philosophy via Neal Stephenson’s Anathem and only knowing the names and words for philosophical and epistemological concepts from Arbre.
Or, I did the latter and now when I reads about general philosophical concepts I have to translate from a fictional lexicon into the one we actually use lmao
