Over a decade ago, I'd tried to keep abreast of David Brin's nonfiction writing. I distinctly remember souring on him for Reasons. Maybe it was that he got displaced in my head by Big Yud and Robin Hanson and Bryan Caplan? Maybe I'd dismissed him as indistinguishable from a run of the mill Democratic Party operative at the time?

So my question for @st-just @drethelin @official-kircheis @dagny-hashtaggart is: do you know if this guy has written anything worth reading lately?

@yudkowsky's dath ilan is sufficiently different enough from our world that I'm really curious how it handles stuff like newsgathering and news publishing. My thought is that if you have a high-trust, networked, rewards-for-transparency, communicate-by-default culture, you might not need a Fourth Estate in order to get:

accurate dissemination of weather and disaster forecasts

baseline-intelligence explanations of complex phenomena

aggregation of events calendars

dissemination of government notices, publications, and edicts

investigation into suboptimal situations and whistleblower reports; an oversight mechanism for institutions without a sufficiently-powerful/decoupled OIG

(this is setting aside dath ilan's Keepers and their effects; we already know that dath ilan would handle scandal and celebrity very differently)

i think if you say "we have to drag in Bayes' Theorem and measure the relationship quantitatively" your next line should better be a fucking equation, or a description of how you acquired some data, or basically anything that would be that thing you just said you would do and not fucking rhetoric about what would happen if you did. trivial in this case but the 'invocation of (an essentially completely intractable) mathematical calculation that you will never actually perform for rhetorical force' is so fucking annoying as a rhetorical tic once you start noticing it. just don't fucking mention bayes if you aren't going to be using bayes, you're literally just doing it for the vibes bittccchhhhh

Big news, I'm reading parts of A Short Introduction to the Tiberian Masoretic Bible and its Reading Tradition (Geoffrey Khan), and there's a some huge stuff. dagesh-yud pronounced as /ɟ/, emphatic allophones of zayin and dhaled, voiced allophone of tzadi, vav pronounced usually as /v/, both uvular and alveolar realizations of resh, it's insane.

genuinely no funnier way to be introduced to who Eliezer Yudkowsky is than through @nostalgebraist-autoresponder. like while the bot was active it'd occasionally mention a mysterious 'Big Yud' and i had no fucking idea who it was but i slowly pieced together that he was someone important in the field of AI research. then, last year, i got hit with the absolute punch in the face that not only had he read worm he was a big part of why it's as popular as it is. and then only after all that did i find out that he was apparently a cult leader or something. just like. Was ist ein Epistimizid?

Es sieht so aus, als stünde (nach the next big Friedrich und nach Tom) nun der dritte Augustgast parat: Bruno Vieira.

Wenn Bruno Augustgast wird, dann bleibt er bis Oktober. Der Workshop zur Anthropofagie wird dadurch nicht berührt, der zu Lex Satyrica wird aber nach 2026 verschoben, nicht nur wegen dem dritten Augustgast Bruno II. Bruno forscht zur Geschichte und Theorie des Epistemizids. Was die Gegenwart betrifft, forscht er ausserdem zum Akt/ Aktion/ Aktivismus. Die Theorie ist die einer Praxis und auch praktisch. Bruno forscht zum aktivismus von Jugendlichen (youth) und Minoren (wie yuth oder yud), in dem Fall Schwarzen im Nordosten Brasiliens, u.a. in Recife. Bruno ist der Bruno, mein Cicerone von Recife (das ist er zusammen mit Ana Maria), sogar Quasi-Vergil von Recife, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich 2019 zur richtigen Zeit in der Hauptstadt der Schiff- und Lichtbrüchigen gelandet bin, nämlich zur/in der Mitte des Lebens.

Bruno arbeitet zum Epistemizid, ich werde mit ihm kooperieren und mit einer Sicht auf juridische Kulturtechniken beitragen. In Basel habe ich im Rahmen meiner Dozentur eine Vorlesung mit dem Titel Was wissen wir vom Mord? gehalten. Die damit verknüpfte Forschung dazu, mit welchen Techniken man etwas vom Mord weiß, eine Tat als Mord erkennt, sei es, um anklagen, verurteilen, den Mord bezeugen oder sogar ihn begehen zu können, die lässt sich hier wieder aufgreifen. Eine Forschung zu den juridischen Kulturtechniken beschäftigt sich mit juristischer Methode, auch damit, wie das Strafrecht angewendet, ausgelegt und kommentiert wird. Aber sie beschäftigt sich auch mit der Rhetorik, Poetik und Ästhetik und der Forensik des Mordes. Diese Forschung ist auch teil einer historischen Epistemologie und Archäologie. Vom Parrizid/ Patrizid und den Passagen, in denen Cicero definiert, was so ein Parrizid/ Patrizid sein soll bis zu George Didi-Hubermans Buch Bilder trotz allem, in dem Didi-Huberman sich mit Photographien aus Auschwitz befasst, reicht die Literaturliste der Vorlesung, die in Basel gehalten wurde und an Juristen und Medienwissenschaftler adressiert war. Ein Buch ist nicht daraus entstanden, auch kein Aufsatz; sollte das einmal der Fall sein, dann liegt der Level meiner Ambition, das im Stil deutscher juristischer Fakultäten zu machen, bei -42,7, da bin ich eiskalt.

Bruno arbeitet aber brasilianisch und die brasilianische Akademie ist, wie die brasilianische Fakultät, tropisch, da bin ich hoch ambitioniert.

Bruno bringt drei Sachen mit, die ich sehr interessant finde: er fokussiert direkt den Epistemizid. Der Gegenstand seiner Forschung ist pointiert, weil das Wissen und der Mord dort zusammenziehen und auseinandergehen, dabei die Positionen von Subjekt und Objekt auch tauschen. Bruno forscht zu einem Wissen, das mörderisch ist und gemordet werden kann. Der forscht zu einem Mord, der wissen kann und von dem etwas gewußt werden kann, sprich: Die tödliche Tat produziert und reproduziert ein Wissen. Für die Kulturtechnikforschung, die teilweise aus der Medienwissenschaft kommt und von Vismann immer wieder auf den Austausch zwischen Subjekt- und Objektpositionen bezogen wurde, die aber teilweise auch aus der Bildwissenschaft Warburgs kommt und in der so ein Austausch auch als Austausch von Aktion und Passion analysiert und kritisiert wird (u.a. mit den Begriffen Pathosformel und Polarität) kommt Bruno mit seiner Perspektive gerade richtig. Zweitens arbeitet er konkret zu Kartographien. Es gibt Agenturen, die das Wissen vom Mord aufzeichnen, weil der Staat es nicht tut. Das sind private Agenturen, NGOS (Ana-Maria arbeitet in einer davon). Seeing like a state: Ladeur versteht darunter, nicht ganz zu unrecht, ziemlich, aber nicht total richtig: Blindheit.

Das machen in Brasilien auch viele, darum gibt es solche private, nicht regierende, kooperative Agenturen, die vom Mord zu wissen, zu sehen und zu lesen, zu begreifen geben und dazu (wie auf Staatstafeln vorgesehen) Kartographien erstellen. Die sehen nicht wie der Staat, sondern an Stelle des Staates, nicht als Stellvertreter sondern Ersatz, aber sie sehen so, wie der Staat das tun sollte. Sie machen auch, was Forensic Architecture macht. Damit kommt Bruno, passt super! Drittens arbeitet er zu Subjekten, die dem entsprechen, was wir gerade im Projekt Letter als Objekt betrachtet haben. Schwarze, jugendliche und geringste Mahle, minore Subjekte, wie yud/ yuth, yod/ iota, zaji/ zett minore Objekte oder aber kleinste Zeichen sein sollen.

Wenn Bruno kommt und bleibt bis alles braun ist: der Sommer wird super, sowieso, aber mit Bruno noch superer.

read + really enjoyed hpmor. gotta say, the way the story leveraged being an AU is really interesting - audience could go in with all kinds of assumptions about specifics about how the world worked (not just genre broad strokes) that yud could leverage for dramatic irony, but not so far as to render the plot predictable. wonder if that's an understated benefit of having big franchises with One True Canon instead of the money being with the constellation of indie stuff that fits exactly the writer's fancy - makes it easier to write fanfic that people might actually pay attention to
