Men share harrowing stories of abuse at hands of partners at historic conference in Belfast
Psychological and emotional forms of abuse tend to cause a more negative impact and greater feelings of fear than physical aggression.
That has been the finding of many studies, and it was a key theme at Northern Ireland’s first conference focusing on male victims of domestic abuse.
Dr Elizabeth Bates, a psychology lecturer at the University of Cumbria, told guests that female perpetrators used coercive control and gaslighting more often than outright violence, though it should be noted that many men have also been physically and sexually abused by female and male partners.
While most of the guests at the summit were women — possibly because they make up three-quarters of Northern Ireland’s community and voluntary workforce — male victims were also in attendance.
One man who did not wish to be named described how his former partner, who he was with for a decade, took control of his finances, sleep, food and, essentially, his entire life.
“I didn’t know what to do or where to go. I was on the edge of going over the edge,” he told this newspaper.
“I didn’t know there was this support for men suffering domestic abuse.
“To be honest, I didn’t even know if I was in an abusive situation because a lot of people think it’s [just] about physical abuse.
“Call me naive, but I had accepted a lot of things as being normal, and they weren’t.”
He began working 10 to 12-hour shifts, sometimes seven days a week, because he feared going home.
“My job became my safe place. I was getting to the point where I was just going and sleeping in the car because she would come and wake me up, start arguments and tell me I would be getting no sleep that night,” he said.
“That drained me. It was hard. The person I had loved and wanted to spend the rest of my life with was treating me this way, and I just didn’t understand it.”
When the man eventually sought help in 2018, he found support was not as readily available as he had expected.
He went to his GP but found they were not a lot of help.
After that, he contacted Women’s Aid, which referred him to the Men’s Advisory Project NI (MAP), the agency that organised yesterday’s conference.
Through MAP, he was referred for free counselling sessions that he attended for 11 months.
“It was like a weight off my shoulders, just being able to talk to somebody who listened and wasn’t judgemental,” he said.
Coercive control is when a person behaves in a way which makes you feel dependent, isolated or scared.
‘Gaslighting’ is a term used to describe when someone manipulates another person, using psychological methods to make them question their sanity or powers of reasoning.
Dr Bates said many male victims of domestic abuse she interviewed had experiences with these kinds of techniques, particularly around their relationship with their children.
“She was unable to control me physically so instead controlled me using our son and my access to him,” one man said.
Legal systems and social norms can also be manipulated to this end.
One father said: “She [his former partner] regularly disobeys court orders over contact and her and her partner make regular threats to my safety in front of the children.
“The police do nothing and the court orders are not enforced by social services.”
The PSNI received 118 reports of coercive or controlling behaviour In 2021/22.
It became illegal following the passing of the Domestic Abuse Act (NI), which came into force in February 2022.
That same year, 1,297 men reported to police that they had been victims of harassment.
In many cases, a victim’s personal characteristics, such as their age, sexuality or mental capacity, will be targeted by abusive partners.
One elderly man said: “She [his former partner] convinced me I had Alzheimer’s and tried to force me to sign a legal paper to declare me incompetent.”
‘Outing’ — where a perpetrator threatens to reveal a victim’s sexuality to others, or suggests they will disclose their HIV status —is a common form of abuse in same-sex relationships.
MAP reported that 49% of gay and bisexual men have experienced at least one incident of domestic abuse since the age of 16.
Some 70% of the men the charity supports are heterosexual and have faced abuse from an intimate partner.
You can contact the Domestic and Sexual Abuse helpline (0808 802 1414), the PSNI or the Housing Executive for 24-hour support

Okay cool cool…you’ve been whinging about cross-community support being a cornerstone of the peace process (when you opposed the GFA), while trying to completely dismantle the NI Protocol (which Republicans overwhelming support), which was agreed to by the Westminster UK government (which you love being under).
Lmao…I mean, this has to be embarrassing.
Oh right? Collapsing the Executive. Worked out fantastically the three times you did it in the last decade. Sure didn’t Westminster (who you love being under the authority of) pass legislation you didn’t like every…single…time, until you cried to restore it?
Oh no wait…this is more embarrassing.
I mean, forcing a general election by collapsing the Executive when you’re behind among the UNIONIST parties, as well as Sinn Féin is absolutely the way to go.
Sure what else would you expect from Sectarian, Coloniser, Young Earth Creationists who are still waiting for Boris to come to the rescue despite him repeatedly stabbing them in the back?

Michael Deane Chats To Dave Cordner: Our Belfast Part Three
Northern Ireland is home to a lot of people, some who have achieved absolutely amazing things and we are a city that supports each other, we take pride in the success of our own, as we navigate to rebuild a city once riddled with terror and hardship.
This series is about interviewing the people of Belfast, uncovering the gems, the culture and discovering the essence of our city, gems of the past, gone but not forgotten and to really celebrate just how far we have come together
I talked to Michael Deane, Michelin Star Chef and owner of some of Belfast’s most iconic restaurants and brasseries. I begin with the question to him as I will do everyone in the ‘Our Belfast’ series:
If you had one day left in Belfast: What would you do?
Michael started off saying that “we are food and drink people” and never a truer statement has been said of our people, we are in total foodie saturation and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Michael Deane of course is one of Belfast’s ultimate foodies, he loves to wine and dine with friends and family at eateries across the city, staying true to his support local mantra, as well as welcoming guests to his many restaurants – he is iconic to the trade.
“I think food and drink makes Belfast go round” he said and it does, it keeps us going, it has us out and about, enjoying the sites, the people and the atmosphere and that is the advice he has for anyone that is coming to Belfast, enjoy it, soak in the energy, the vibrancy, the culture and the craic. – ’just enjoy the vibe of the city’
Deanes used to have a “Dine around Deanes” experience that you could book, something Michael said “I do miss” and reflected fondly upon. Even though you can no longer avail of that, he suggests that you head out and ‘have a bite here, there and everywhere’, with a wealth of eateries and bars that spread across the city you are spoilt for choice (check out the best bars in Belfast).
A celebrity in Belfast, a pioneer in the food and drink industry, Michael mentions some of his favourite spots in the city and recommends others in the industry that are passionate about Belfast as well.
He mentions Bengal Brasserie and Ox among his favourites, as well as his love for Asian cuisine in the city. Michael thinks that the ‘Ethnic restaurants aren’t supported enough in the media’ and urges more media publication on ethnic cuisine and promoting them as the proud Northern Irish restaurateurs that they are, so he goes there and supports them, supports local – now more than ever – “I like to support local” he finished with.
What do you remember from back in the day?
‘When we first came to Belfast, we lived in Dunmurry…we moved to the Donaghadee/Groomsport area, outside of Belfast and we tended to stay away as the troubles were in full flight. He reflected on when he first opened and remembered “glass coming through the windows” and having to undergo refurbishment – a far cry from the city we know now.
He stated “I think it made us stronger and tougher as a city”, putting it out in black and white ‘we will never forget it, but I am proud having watched us grow out of that state’.
“The city was dead, the barriers were up” and now we proudly welcome over 5 million tourists every year to Belfast, bringing £1 billion into the economy in 2019 (Tourism NI Statistics, 2019)
We have a long way to go as a  city and Michael thinks that the food and drink industry is going to be the igniting factor in pushing the city to its full potential, and is of the thinking that there needs to be more hospitality establishments in and around the city hall to really have a central hub to the city and pull together the fragments that still exist as we continue to build to a better Belfast.
What excites you about the future?
A positive outlook from Michael as he reflected on the pandemic, the reassessing of his business, as many had to in the city and how the people of Belfast handled the pandemic restrictions.
A man with a great outlook after a tough year, understanding that the people in Belfast have already been through so much having grown up here, he said:
“They are strong people, and I think the people here will always keep it a vibrant city, an exciting city”
We really are a resilient city, something I am finding is shared by those passionate about Belfast in this series.
Why do you think you had such great success?
Attributing his success to a good Northern Irish attitude of “kick back, get our head up and prove that we can do the best”
Michael reflected on his time abroad starting out his career and how we as people had to prove ourselves, recalling feeling “treated like a thick Paddy”, proving himself and getting to where he is today.
Proudly summing up with his view that ‘we are great achievers’ and just unbelievable what he has achieved alongside his wife and son.
“I want to leave some sort of legacy that Michael Deane did well in Belfast and he provided a service, not just to the top end”, – a legacy he will most certainly leave for others to continue.
“We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner – we aren’t brain surgeons” he said – well, maybe not Michael, but you certainly have pioneered the food and drink industry in Northern Ireland.
I think that I can speak for the city as a whole, certainly those that enjoy the food and drink experiences you provide, for your welcoming approach and for setting down the building blocks for the next generation to continue your legacy and strive to make Belfast bigger and better.

EVERTON have a store just along from Liverpool’s in the centre of Liverpool. Last week I was in both these stores and the impression you get in comparing them is that Liverpool are a much bigger club. Everton looked small and second rate in comparison.
Brendan Rodgers took Liverpool to within a Steven Gerrard slip of winning the Premier League. He was desperately unlucky but Liverpool’s misfortune turned out to be Celtic’s huge gain.
Like Glasgow, Liverpool is a city with one of their clubs currently without a manager. That club is Everton.
In contrast to what I saw with my own eyes, the Daily Record reckon that Everton are a club with “potential, stature and history’, and that the chance to manager them would be too good for Brendan Rodgers to refuse.
Tonight Brendan Rodgers might be asked about this. He is at Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo and will appear in front of a sold out audience to talk about his life and promote his new book which will be on sale from tomorrow at the Celtic stores and also on www.cqnbookstore.com
It will be a night to remember for Celtic fans attending ‘An Evening with Brendan Rodgers’ at Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo tonight in celebration of the launch of the manager’s official autobiography, ‘Brendan Rodgers: The Road to Paradise’.
This sold-out event will be hosted by broadcaster and fellow NI Hospice Ambassador, Eamonn Holmes, with Brendan Rodgers taking centre stage to tell his remarkable life story.
And Brendan will do it all over again at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall on Wednesday, November 1, where tickets are still available (see below).
This hardly looks like a manager sitting thinking that the vacant Everton job would be just too good to turn down.
That however is tall story the Daily Record is flying today.
As if Celtic is short on potential.
Or stature.
Or history.
Their journalist Ian Castles has claimed that Brendan Rodgers is one of Everton’s top three candidates to replace Ronald Koeman, the latest manager sacked from Goodison Park.
“I know that Everton are very interested in Brendan Rodgers. When they sacked Ronald Koeman, they didn’t actually have a primary candidate singled out,” Castles said on the Daily Record podcast.
“I think Brendan is certainly in the top three. Obviously there’s some personal history with Brendan having managed Liverpool but I don’t think Brendan would see that as a problem. After all, Liverpool sacked him.
“I think timing is against him. He doesn’t want to walk out on Celtic at this moment in his tenure and I think seeing out this season would be his preference. But opportunities don’t come along often at a club which has the potential, stature and history of Everton.”
Yesterday Sevco Rangers sacked Pedro Caixinha, so like Everton they are looking for a new manager. The Record realises that their 5 year old favourites will never match Celtic, so long as Brendan Rodgers is in charge.
Brendan Rodgers, the manager who signed a new long term contract last season, and is absolutely loving his job at his club, Celtic.
Hurt, desperation and envy, not an easy listen that Podcast.
*TICKETS are available on general sale now for ‘An Evening with Brendan Rodgers’ at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall on Wednesday, November 1, in celebration of the launch of his official autobiography, ‘Brendan Rodgers: The Road to Paradise’.
Priced from just £15, this intimate event – hosted by broadcaster and NI Hospice Ambassador Eamonn Holmes – gives fans the opportunity to hear directly from the Celtic manager as he takes centre stage to talk about his journey from a small village on the north-east coast of Ireland, to becoming the treble-winning manager of Celtic Football Club.
Tickets are available to buy now:

DERRY YouTube sensation, Adam Beales, sprung the surprise of a lifetime on his parents this week as he presented them with a new house on Friday, before uploading the big reveal to his YouTube channel yesterday (Saturday).
More than a year in the planning Adam, known as Adam B online, managed to keep it a secret from his mum and dad Edelle and Paul.
However, the whole scheme nearly collapsed with the Covid-19 lockdown. Adam had signed the final papers on the house the day before lockdown was announced but couldn’t press ahead with his surprise.
This week he was finally ready for the big reveal: “Just this week, with the property market opening back up again across the UK, I enquired with the local council and government to see if what I was planning to do, was allowed at this stage. Thankfully, it was.”
The 20-year-old YouTube star has amassed more than 2.7 million subscribers to his channel but is conscious that this purchase shouldn’t be seen as an extravagance in these times.
“I don’t want people to get the wrong ideas that this house was just bought on a whim by some obnoxious vlogger during times like these,” Adam explained.
“This has been in the pipeline for quite some time now and it just so happens that the surprise takes place during these crazy times.
“However, I do hope people can see that it was quite a long, up and down journey to eventually hand over the keys to my parents.”
Earlier this month Adam gave away more than £1,000 to people in need who contacted him on his Twitter feed.
“I love getting involved with good causes and I’m fortunate to be in a position where I can help others. I’ve some charity work in the planning at the minute and I’m just itching to get telling people about these fantastic causes that make such a massive difference in people’s lives.”
Adam’s parents had been considering a move for some time after floating the idea in 2018.
“They then started looking at houses and viewing houses in January of 2019,” he explained, adding: “However, with COVID-19, they haven’t really been on looking for new houses which sort of made me a bit nervous because by the stage the pandemic hit – the house was already bought and I was thinking, ‘what if they’ve changed their mind?’.”
Deciding on the exact house wasn’t an issue said Adam: “They viewed a lot of houses, really, quite a lot. But this was the one that stood out to them.”
For a number of years Adam has been garnering more and more YouTube subscribers, as well as more than 500,000 followers on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok with his witty pranks and sketches
He is thankful to his parents for helping him pursue his dream.
“They understood the passion that I had for YouTube and kept motivating me to strive for more, Adam explained. “I guess what really meant so much to me, is that they believed in me.
“It would have been easy for them to encourage me to stop YouTube and pursue university in fear that YouTube may not work out. However, they believed in me and my decision and welcomed it with open arms. I am so, so thankful. And I’m incredibly grateful that I can help them.”
And, what a help.
“The house I bought for them was actually a brand, new show home in a new development, Adam said. “It has all the mod-cons and everything is in pristine condition.”
“It’s still a 4-bedroom house so they’re not downsizing or upsizing from their last home.
“It was the only house that made my mum and dad’s jaw drop. I knew the second I saw their faces when they were viewing the house that this was the one.
Now that they know, one member of the family is already excited about settling in.
“I think the biggest feature that my little brother will love is the internet speed,” he said. “This new home has 100x faster broadband than the house my parents were living in so no doubt, there will be no more freezes or lagging when Callum is playing Fortnite.”
It wasn’t easy for Adam to keep the surprise under wraps.
“This has been the hardest secret to keep in my entire life,” he said “I’m so close to my family so I tell them everything that’s going on. This was the only time where I had to keep something so big to myself.
“Usually, my mum and dad know when I’m hiding something, but they had no clue that a house was in the process of being bought behind their backs. I’m so glad the news is out because it is so nerve-racking trying to hold in such a big surprise for so long.”
With the Covid-19 pandemic Adam is keen to express his thanks to all who are working in these daunting times, and that he is undertaking this purchase within the current rules.
“The true heroes out there are the people working in the NHS and the frontlines, helping to save lives, keep the country running, and the least we all can do was to stay home,” he said.
“The stay at home message was, and still is, loud and clear so I just had to wait until I got further news from the local council and government for when it was safe to do so. “
Now Adam and his family are set to organise move in.
“With local authorities’ advice, and adhering to the social distancing rules,” he explained. “We are going to rent a van ourselves so no one is helping us and therefore mitigating the risk of spreading the virus.
“However, I think my mum and dad will still be in shock so I have no clue when or what they’re going to move into the new house.”
Adam is leaving the exact date down to his parents, as he said: “It’s their house now so it is up to them. – I think they might need some time for it all to sink in”.
The YouTube star also wanted to express his thanks to everyone who takes the time to follow him online.
“I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has watched my videos, supported me throughout the years and believed in the hustle,” Adam said. “I hope to continue making good quality family entertainment and I can’t wait to share more news in the coming months.”
On his Facebook page Adam describes what he does that attracts so many subscribers: “a not so funny person trying to be funny”.
“You can catch me doing pranks, challenges, vlogs, Q&A’s, life hacks, gaming, eating food and so much more!”
Check out Adam’s videos on his YouTube channel Adam B.

It’s a new year! Time for something new… I wrote a lot of blogs in the past few years about everything happening behind the scenes, but not once have I introduced the band to you. It’s about time!
Starting off with Kevin Carlisle, the man behind the beat! Over the past few years I got to know Kevin a bit during the tours in The Netherlands. Kevin is funny, he’s always up for silliness, he loves being photographed (not really) and – I’m not sure how he does that – he can sleep anywhere at any time.
No better way to get to know the band better than sending them all some silly questions. Here’s what Kevin said:
Tell me a little about yourself I’m quirky, love making music and also making people laugh!!
Coffee or Tea?  (An important subject for Robb Murphy and the band, they are fueled by caffeine!) Defo coffee not into tea at all.
3 songs on your playlist right now? Psy – daddy:  https://youtu.be/FrG4TEcSuRg On the Nature of Daylight – Max Richter:  https://youtu.be/rVN1B-tUpgs Bang Bang – Green Day :  https://youtu.be/mg5Bp_Gzs0s
How did you meet Robb and where? First met Robb back in The Minority days. His band organised a gig in the Pavilion Bar, we were one of the support bands. Also it was our first gig in Belfast as the John Shelly and the Creatures (later Master & Dog). Was a great wee night.
Describe one perfect day… LOL, being off work!!! Actually sleeping in…. I always wake up at 7am, stupid biological clock. I would make a batch of Kevy pancakes; 2 eggs a whack of self raising flour, and a dollop of whole milk, mix, cook then top with maple syrup. Boom! Also this perfect day would consist of chilling out watching TV with the missus. Playing drums/guitar and computer games. This one is tough! Lol moving on.
Cats or Dogs? I don’t mind either. But have more of a preference to cats.
Do you dance? Awkwardly and badly.
I say it’s time for some choreography practice Kevin!!
If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be? Usually I would say my bed! I mean who doesn’t love their own bed. I’d happily be on the road playing gigs right now … that’s the dream.
Favourite place in Northern Ireland? NI is such a nice wee place. But I advise everyone to go to Sugar Rays in Dundonald. Get the ultimate combo…. so much meat!!!!
Who would you be nervous to meet? I wouldn’t say I would be nervous to meet anyone. I usually go head first into first contact with people.
True or False… the drummer is in charge! Now this doesn’t have to be asked. See the GIF for why!! Lol.
Silliest thing you’ve done on the latest NL tour? Drinking then dancing to YouTube videos. I blame the alcohol. You should talk about it with the other lads in the band.
What’s your most valued possession? My drum kit yup. It’s a bit awesome.
Future plans? Can’t think that far ahead!!!
If a penguin wearing a sombrero walked into your room right now, what would you do and why? Video it, put it on the internet and watch the millions roll in!! Lol.
Name one thing about music that drives you crazy? Counting songs in. I hate it!!!
Can you share some of your thoughts on the music scene in NI? One tough nut to crack! The scene is small with loads of really talented folk! If only people went out to more gigs the world would be a better place.
How many instruments do you play? Drums, some percussion. I used to play the clarinet and alto sax. I like to tinker on piano when I can find one, guitar/ bass.
Favourite t-shirt? Any of my Adventure Time t-shirts.
Top 3 places you’d love to play live Ulster Hall Belfast Mandela Hall Belfast SSE Arena Belfast.
What surprises you the most? Ermmm that after 30 years I still stay up too late hahaha.
Favourite thing about the Netherlands? I probably should say stroopwafels, but it’s how nice everyone is. They truly do appreciate the music. :)
Favourite song from high school? Ah jaysus this is like saying what’s your favourite food.
The offspring – Kids Aren’t Alright. https://youtu.be/VrZ4sMRYimw
What inspires you? I take inspiration from friends, family and other musicians. Keep an open mind listen to all types of music, you never know when you’ll find that next song or tune that stays with you forever. Thanks for this Kevin!
I hope this gives you a bit of insight into the man behind the beat! You can follow Kevin on Twitter  Stop by and say hello!
Introducing Kevin Carlisle…the man behind the beat! It’s a new year! Time for something new… I wrote a lot of blogs in the past few years about everything happening behind the scenes, but not once have I introduced the band to you.
