One show ends this week, but there are several more on the way, including a surprising adaptation. Of the six shows airing now, five are streaming weekly on Gaga and the other is available via fansub.

Takara's Treasure

I. LOVE. THEM. Their little bird watching date was precious and I loved every moment of it, including Taishin's adorable outfit and over preparedness, Takara's secret smiles, and the patient search for the wallet. I was so relieved that Taishin named his fears about them not being suited upfront instead of letting it grow into a huge anxiety in his own head, and I was also happy Takara was eager to speak with him about his impending relocation. That said, NOOOOOOOO I don't want a forced separation and time skip, show. Please I am begging.

Cosmetic Playlover

This was my favorite week for this show by far, because they actually let us see the relationship at its center! I enjoyed finally spending some time with these two as a couple, though I still find the timing and sequencing of these plots confusing as hell. Last week Sahashi gave Mamiya keys to his place and it was implied they'd been dating for quite awhile and were already serious, but this week we learn Mamiya has never spent the night and they are only just having sex for the first time. It was a real record scratch for me; I can't get my bearings in this relationship trajectory with all the gaps in the story. But hey, at least they finally let them make out a little! For a show that sold itself as toxic sexy, there has been very little toxicity or sex, tbh.

I Hear the Sunspot

*rubs temples* This show is really testing my patience. I got excited last week when Kohei and Taichi finally had a real conversation and it seemed like we were moving forward, but this week we're back to treading water. This story did not need 12 episodes; this pacing, while faithful to the manga as I understand it, does not work well for weekly live action. It's been weeks since we've learned anything new about these characters or advanced the central relationship, and the show continues to stumble with its confused depiction of Maya. I just want this show to pull together and finish strong, because I think a lot of this will be much more tolerable on a binge watch. For now I will just gaze at Kohei's beautiful smiling face and hope for a full recovery.

Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko

I said last week that the show had gotten so muddled I didn't think they'd be able to end well, and even with those very low expectations this finale still managed to get underneath them. The last several episodes made a mess of the characters, the conflict, and the themes of the show, and to add insult to injury, they capped it all off with angle kisses, a time skip, and a bizarre sex negative ending that had our "boob monster" adult lesbian refusing to have sex with her girlfriend for over a year so she could "cherish" her before randomly kissing her at the office as if that was the important resolution we'd been waiting for. A truly horrid ending that ruined everything this show did so well in its early episodes. I don't understand!! Big sigh and fingers crossed for a decent sexy gl sometime in the near future.

Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding

I've just been beaming and staring into space for the last several minutes after finishing this episode. No matter what else happens in the shows, I love knowing I am always going to end my week in jql on a good note while this gem is airing. This week marked a transition point for Ishida and Mitsuya, as Ishida had a great conversation with Noguchi, found a new passion and put in for a job transfer, and had his final meeting and meal with Mitsuya as writer and editor. Which they immediately followed with a date and mutual acknowledgment of the feelings between them! And what a fantastic date it was, with every moment so invigorating and wonderfully adult. Mitsuya's quiet confidence and amusement at Ishida's nerves, Ishida's clarity on how he wants Mitsuya to see him, the mutual compliments and gestures and smiles and eye contact, ahhhhhhhhh. I also loved that Ishida got to be the one to show Mitsuya something new at the end, to get him to run with joy for the first time in ages and introduce him to a new food. i think it's interesting how my ed has changed as i've gotten older. when i was 14, the goal was essentially to starve myself to death. i loved thinspo of people who were clearly very sick; we used to call it bonespo, and i honestly doubt many of the girls in those photos are still alive. i would fast until i couldn't anymore and then binge so intensely that i caused real damage to my stomach. i nearly flunked out of high school and barely graduated, then did nothing except work part time at burger king for a year. i was a zombie with no ambition except to achieve a body that was actively dying.

i got covid in june of 2020 and had to take several rounds of steroids. i gained over 100 pounds, totally out of my control, and it caused a death-spiral in my mind that brought me to the brink. i brought myself to the hospital and spent a month inpatient, changing up my meds until i found something that worked for me. i was lucky to have a psychiatrist who believed that i had an ed despite the fact that i wasn't underweight.

now that i'm officially in my late 20s, and i have the lifesaving clarity of adulthood and the proper cocktail, i know i want to live. i still want to be thin, but my ugw is a bmi of 18, not 15. i eat every day - i don't have a choice if i want to be a functional adult and not an empty shell dependent on my parents. eds are closely linked to ocd, and i have been diagnosed with both. neither disorder ever really leaves you, but you have to learn to live around it or it'll consume you from the inside out.

the progress from "my plan is to whittle myself down to nothing and then die young and skinny" to "my plan is to use an aggressive but safe calorie deficit to shape a body i can both love AND survive in" may not seem like healing, but everyone here knows how much that shift means. do i still deal with obsessive thoughts? do i compulsively look at thinspo? do i sometimes take several steps backwards and have a bad few weeks? sure. but i'm not dying anymore. i'm alive. i have goals. i have hope.

if you're currently in the state that 14-year-old me lived in, if you're young and sad and overwhelmed, and if you feel like the only way to find happiness is to construct a a body that looks as unhealthy as you feel, please know i get you. 14 years ago, at the height of tumblr's ana community, i was you. it hurts. it sucks. it feels like the right thing to do in the moment. but i'm begging you to do one thing for me: i want you to make it to adulthood by any means necessary. i know you're not gonna stop, because you're young, and being young sucks. you don't have any freedom or control over your daily life. i won't tell you to give up your restriction and magically start eating healthy. but i will beg you to just... make it. get through it alive.

live long enough to actually ENJOY the body you're suffering so horribly for.

Loved CotN (binged the whole series in 2 days), and had one question that's bugged me since: you mention that Jasper's *only* fears relate to Alice, and that's why Skye can't fully crack him until his fears become reality and he kills her. But what if he had never met Alice? Did he have no fears before her, or he did it's just that they were insignificant in the face of meeting Alice? What would've happened with Skye - would he have been easier or more difficult to crack? (sorry if sent 2x

IMO even canon Jasper has a very... unique experience with all emotion but especially fear. for a vampire he hasn't lived too long; 160 years sounds like a long time, but there are vampires in the Twilight universe who are literal millennia old. when you 'grow up' (for lack of a better term) as part of the southern wars and that's your introduction into vampirism, you're sort of exposed to a lot of the brutal shit that gets glossed over in 95% of the Twilight saga. you aren't going to find yourself scared of too much when you're arguably one of the scariest things around.

even Edward, remarking at one point in Midnight Sun when they're rushing to the ballet studio says “As a man of peace, Jasper struggled. But as a man of war, he was more that I'd ever imagined.” because despite the circumstances—and I'm assuming, despite the potent fucking fear Edward was experiencing—Jasper was making it so that entire stolen car full of vampires was utterly fucking focused on their mission. (and if the focus was somewhat-inspired by a certain someone's excitement willingness to finally get to murder another vampire after so long, that's for Edward and Jasper to know, and for us to only just guess about 👀)

but of course your question is about CotN Jasper, so I'll try to stay on topic here. in order to understand that part I think I have to explain more about Skye and her ability. I go into it pretty decently in Walk in the Dark, but there are still some things I both left vague and haven't fully had the opportunity to go into more depth about. she has the passive part of her ability, where she can walk into a room and low-key clock everyone's fear in the vicinity without even really trying too hard. it's not like unlike Jasper's ability in a way and it has some similarities to Edward's too. she can't turn it off, but she can focus it.

get ready for some Skye lore bestie 😛

in Call of the Night we're introduced to Skye's ability because Alice can't see Jasper when he's "under". I've never fully explained what that means in detail I don't think (but if I have, and if that contradicts anything I'm about to say, forget about that: this is the Real Lore) but when a person is "under" her ability it means that she has full reign of a portion of their subconscious. whichever part that is in charge of fear; I don't know what part that is since I don't know jack shit about the actual mechanics of the brain, sorry about that. (edit: I googled it, and it's the amygdala apparently. fun!)

Skye's ability is a fully mental/psychic one. (which is why at the end of CotN, Bella is able to give Jasper a few vital hours of precious clarity immediately post-battle.) where Edward is able to hear people's thoughts like spoken words, Skye is able to see people's fears; it's not unlike how Alice can see people's futures. they play out for Skye like a fast-paced vision that goes through her mind in an instant where she can look across a room and think "oh wow that guy really is convinced his wife is going to cheat on him with her coworker huh?" or "plane crashes? really? how original". the only catch is that when she's focusing in on these people directly it doesn't go unnoticed. Alice remarks upon the strange but faint tingling sensation that occurs in chapter 10 of Walk in the Dark when Skye tries to quite literally scare her off by reciting to Alice what her selfish fears are.

but remember: this is the relatively harmless part of her ability. (harmless to others, at least.) Skye can also force you to fully live these fears that occupy space in your brain. whatever you're afraid of, whatever would scare you, whatever is something that would cause panic or anxiety, Skye can make your brain experience these the same way that she can 'see' those very fears play out when she's detecting them. it causes the victim to lose full control over themselves and they remain trapped in an endless loop of what are essentially nightmares.

Skye is a relatively new vampire. she's only been around for a few years. the ability of hers is something that she only barely knows how to control. we even see in a vision of Alice's where Maria is frustrated by Skye's inability to control Jasper the way she needs her to, and Skye remarks "That’s not how this works, you know that’s not how this works!" because Skye is using her ability the only way she knows how to, by cycling the victim through their nightmares as much as she can to create a sort of helpless comatose state. it puts them in a state that makes manipulation easy because they become so wrapped in this alternate-reality where they're so entrapped by these horrors that telling dream from reality becomes as hard as telling up from down. (I explore this slightly in a very spoiler-heavy CotN AU in which the final battle doesn't go well.)

and as the use of the active ability increases, and as the target becomes more accustomed to what they're experiencing, it makes things more and more... interesting for sure. (with enough exposure, Jasper was able to become the killing machine that he was by the climax of the story) I won't get too into this part of the lore, because it becomes a little spoilery for Friends with the Fire and I want to keep you guys still wondering a liiiiittle bit over the next couple of years 🤠

now, is losing Alice his only fear? not exactly. if we look back up at the point I made above, Jasper has been through some rough experiences. and by rough I mean that canonically by the Saga's standards Jasper was "undeniably a nightmare, a monster of the grisliest kind." in that scene in Twilight he even goes on to tell Bella that no matter where he was, whether it was with Maria or just living as a nomad, fear was a constant companion of his. he felt it from every person he fed on. in both the actual Twilight saga and the CotN one, Jasper has had to face fear in a way that others don't have to. because of this, he's able to be more objective about his own emotion.

does that mean he doesn't care about his fellow Protectors? no, not at all. but he isn't afraid of losing them since he knows how capable they are, as fighters and just as vampires maneuvering through their strange lifestyle. some of them have even faced Jasper in battle on opposite sides fighting in a way; Jasper isn't scared of them getting hurt or dying. it doesn't mean he doesn't want them in harms way or that he doesn't care, but he knows that being anxious over their safety is a little silly. (Esme is a notable exception to this, and we'll look more into that, again, in FwtF.)

but Alice is a curveball. she has existed in a constant state of fight or flight and has "chosen flight" her entire life in an attempt to avoid, what she considers, her inevitable demise. as Jasper gets to know Alice, and as Jasper learns that Alice's visions are real, and uncanny, and scarily accurate, Jasper starts to get uneasy. and when Jasper begins to develop feelings for her, that uneasiness transforms into horror at the idea of hurting her.

the reason that Skye was so set on using the "him killing Alice" thing to crack Jasper is because it's so goddamn prevalent in his mind, that it's quite literally the only thing she can find that she knows will provide Maria with any form of potential permanent results. and even then, Skye is just doing her best. this gift is new, her control is heavily practiced and trained, but it's only been a couple of years and she's doing everything she can to make it through to sunrise each day.

fear, as an emotion, is something that our brains have developed to protect us from danger. throughout the entirety of CotN, fear is Alice's biggest companion since it's her largest hurdle, but fear is also very prevalent in Jasper's life, too, since he's had to face all of his in order to continue living the life he does. I think they're interesting foils in CotN because of this little detail. Alice meets Jasper and has to face her fears for the first time in her life. Jasper meets Alice and quickly develops a real, concrete fear for the first time in decades.

Maria tasking Skye with "cracking" Jasper—the one person on the goddamn planet who knows how to maneuver around feeling a constant aura of horror and fear—for me feels like a university professor giving an advanced biochemistry exam to an average fifteen year old. there's no way in fucking hell she's going to pass that test. but Skye is a determined little devil and she's more clever than she gives herself credit for and she was going to do everything in and out of her power to figure something out. too bad for Maria that since Skye has to also go through Jasper's nightmares along with him as he does, she formed an attachment to him. but this attachment, no matter how fucked and wild, is the only thing that keeps Alice alive in the end.

TLDR;

if Skye had been tasked with trying to "crack" a Jasper who hadn't met Alice and fallen in love? she would have reported back to Maria that first day that it was a pointless endeavor and something that would take far, far longer than they had time for. (their next step likely would've been tracking down Peter/Charlotte as a backup and then killing all of the Protectors one by one. again, a nearly impossible feat is what it would have been. and even if it had been possible, it would've taken them years, assuming that the Volturi or another country wouldn't step in to help before then)

Jasper isn't fearless, but there isn't a fear he has that he hasn't faced head-on because of who he is and where he came from.

oh. my god. i have been waiting for an excuse to talk about this for ages. thank you anon.

so like. i go back and forth on if they were "dating" in middle school but more recently i've been analyzing their relationship as more of a repressed angsty thing that eventually develops into a real connection once they get older and calm down and date women and get some clarity. they don't come back to their spark until college.

i think tess and caitlyn start hooking up the summer after caitlyn's freshman year at wesleyan/tess's sophomore year at nyu, but they don't tell anyone and nobody asks until the following christmas where they're drinking on tess's mom's couch in la and it's jason of all people who goes "so what's going on with you two???" they start officially dating not long after that.

they go back and forth and do the long distance thing for a while, and it's genuinely happy. tess loves spending time on a real campus and caitlyn loves running away to a big city whenever she gets the urge. they get each other. they get what the other person is about and why they do the things they do and why they love. it's easy for a long long while.

tess stays in new york the year after she graduates and does the trust fund baby thing of recording demos and going to parties uptown and walking in the wind on the high line alone with herself, but around other people. she loves it. she loves new york. she loves her friends. she loves the way this city feels like her own.

caitlyn graduates, and being the fiercely loyal person she is she honors the promise she made to mitchie and moves out to la to help produce the album she had put off to go to college. tess goes with her.

it's good for a while because of course it is. they live in a one bedroom in silverlake and tess has an entire life built there already, her friends from camp and her friends from high school and her immediate family and the car she left behind when she went to college and her favorite brunch spot and hiking trails and and and-

she hates it. she hates being home. she hates being in the place where she was alone and angry and scared. she hates being somewhere that she can't make her own. she hates the way it feels to drive in the pocket of beverly hills she grew up in and feeling like she's never going to be able to move past the way she felt when she was that person. she's never going to be able to live in the same city as her mother and not crave her validation. she's never going to be able to stand over the edge of runyon and not feel this sad sort of claustrophobia looking at the buildings below.

she loves caitlyn. she does, she really does. she loves the way it feels to laugh with her or sit on the couch and binge watch trashy tv or sit in one of their friend's studios messing around with a track they have no intention of ever releasing. but if there's anything she's learned in the last 6 years, she cannot keep loving someone more than she loves herself. new york is not for caitlyn. it's too fast and too foreign and it's not a place to settle down, it's a place to live excitedly. she loves la. she loves the sprawling city and the way it feels to drive down fairfax late at night with her windows open. she loves being with her best friends. she loves tess. she does, she really does. but not enough to follow her.

they stay friends, but they drift like anyone else. your friend group does not stay intact after high school forever, it just doesn't. sure, mitchie's stuck with half their friends purely based on the fact she's about to marry into their family and caitlyn thinks if anything, she's grateful she gets to stick with her best friend. tess doesn't find superstardom in new york. but she does find peace. and really, that's so much better.
