Hey loved the thenamesh lifeguard au! Would you write some cute fluff stuff like for example thena putting sunscreen on Gil’s back?
Thena looked down as she felt Kingo pat the side of the tower chair. "You are not supposed to climb this thing. We tell people not to all day."
He gave her a grin and a shrug, "just thought you'd wanna know that your break is in five--if you wanted to go early I'll cover for you."
Thena raised a brow at him, "and why would you do that?"
Kingo tipped his sunglasses down, "because I'm a good friend, Thena."
No dice.
Kingo chuckled, pushing them up again and climbing even higher, all but pushing Thena out of his way, "because your boyfriend keeps looking over here to see if you're done yet."
"He's not-"
"He is," Kingo rolled his eyes. It wasn't as if it was any secret at all. "Now, go!"
Thena huffed, on her way over to Gil while looking around her at the rest of the beach goers. It was easier than looking right at Gil on her way over to him.
"Hey."
"Hey," she smiled marginally, ending up beside him under the shade of his umbrella.
"How was your morning?" he asked genially, folding up his legs out of the sun as she curled up next to him.
"Uneventful, I suppose," she answered while staring out at the water. "I mostly had to watch the early morning kids and make sure they weren't being hooligans."
Gil chuckled at her word choice, pulling out a bottle of water for the both of them.
"Thanks," Thena murmured, accepting it and definitely not thinking about the very simple brush of their fingers as she did. "What have you been up to?"
"Mm," Gil hummed between sips. "Haven't been here long. But I did get in a quick dip before it got too crowded."
Oh, she had seen. It was impossible to miss a wall of muscle, after all. And in the binoculars, soaking wet...
"I just have to reapply my sunscreen."
Thena blinked, suddenly feeling as if she was being caught up in something. She looked over at him.
"I got most of me already," he promised, as if anticipating her concern. "It's, uh, just my back, really."
Thena could see why he might have trouble reaching it, with those arms, those shoulders, even just the muscles in his back...
"I don't suppose you'd, um," Gil trailed off, blushing cutely as he struggled to suggest the cliche.
Thena smiled at his shyness, "did you wait for me to go on break in hopes that I could help you?"
"Well," he semi-admitted, shifting on his towel. "If you didn't want to, I just wouldn't go swimming again. Or I'd put on a shirt, I guess."
And they couldn't have that.
Thena rolled her eyes, taking the squeeze tube from him, "turn."
Gil acquiesced, not making a big deal out of it, because he was sweet like that. In fact, he was the one with the tips of his ears gone red.
Thena inhaled, rubbing the cream in her palms and staring down the broad expanse of his back. She was hesitant, reaching out slowly before pressing her palms to his back.
The longer she took, the more flustered she felt. Thena blushed as she moved her hands over every bend and curve of his muscles, both strong and wiry but also with a pleasant layer of softness over them. She was a lifeguard, it wasn't like she was a stranger to the average human body.
But Gil was far from average, and she was starting to wonder if he was human.
Gil shivered as she reached the center of his back, along his spine. She withdrew her hand, letting out a soft sound of surprise (some might call it a squeak, which she would deny). "Sorry."
Thena didn't trust herself to get out proper words, instead just resuming her work of making sure Gilgamesh didn't get a sunburn. She moved her hand over his spine, from the base of his neck down, down...down as far as she could dare.
Gil blushed from the neck up as she swiped her palms around the plump over his hip bones. "D-Done?"
"Hm," Thena replied, handing the tube of sunscreen back to him.
"Th-Thanks," he smiled sheepishly at his...at Thena. He wasn't entirely sure what they were or where exactly they stood. But so long as it was beside her, he didn't have any complaints.
"Don't mention it," Thena muttered, fidgeting with the sleeves of her track jacket she threw on over her uniform suit.
Gil cleared his throat. "What, uh, what're you doing after your shift?"
"Today?" she asked, and he nodded. "Well, I'm off by 1 today. Kingo and Ikaris have the afternoon shift."
"So," Gil smiled, "you could, maybe, have lunch with me?--if you want?"
Thena smiled at the very sweet man beside her. She was so used to being hit on by absolute pigs, but Gilgamesh was so completely different from all the meatheads she had to deal with on a daily basis. "That'd be nice."
"Okay!" he brightened, and Thena looked away again. "I'll, uh, I'll just be here, I guess."
"I'll come find you," Thena murmured, standing up to go back to the lifeguard tower.
"Oh, hey," Gil shot to his feet. He pressed the tube of sunscreen into her palm.
Thena tilted her head at him; she had plenty at the guard station.
"You look like you're getting a little too much sun already," he shrugged with a gentle smile. He tapped his own cheek, "just a little."
Thena turned around, eager to escape as she felt her cheeks become even more flushed (which Gil had taken as signs of sunburn). "Thanks--see you later!"

I Get a Sugar Rush Whenever I'm With You - Chapter 7.2
Good evening fellow Drukkari stans, or whatever time it is for you! I come bearing the next mini-chapter! If you need to catch up, you can find all previous installments on my Table of Contents here. If you're all caught up, then buckle up! After their second possible date/secret baking session, Druig and Makkari are heading into the seventh week of the competition. What will this week have in store? Find out now, in the next installment of Drukkari in the Great British Bake Off!
Tumblr media
Druig couldn’t tell if he was on cloud nine or six feet under. He’d been in even more of a daze after his last clandestine meeting with Makkari than the one before, and he still couldn’t say for sure if they were just good friends or something more. He hadn’t wanted to get his hopes up, but he found himself replaying that moment just before the ice cream machine went off over and over in his head. A part of him was nearly certain that she’d started leaning closer to him, and they were already quite close at that point. Another part was questioning if he was the one leaning in. And a third part was whispering that he’d imagined the whole thing. Druig hoped with his entire being that it wasn’t the latter.
He did his best to pull himself together as he joined the others in front of the hotel the morning of the seventh week. Makkari was already there, making conversation with Gilgamesh and Sprite, who’d both picked up enough signs to hold a simple conversation. As she saw him approaching, Makkari broke into a soft grin, and he nearly had to stop to catch his breath. It did not go unnoticed by their companions. Gil merely raised an eyebrow, but Sprite rolled her eyes as she muttered, “Get a room, you two.”
“We’ve already got two,” he replied, a smirk creeping its way onto his face as Sprite scoffed.
What’d she say? Makkari asked.
“Something snarky,” was all the explanation he gave. He pointedly ignored the looks coming from both Sprite and Gil, and if Makkari noticed, she ignored them as well.
It wasn’t long before Phastos and Sersi arrived, then it was time to board the shuttle. Druig ushered her in first, signing, After you, milady.
Thank you, kind sir, she responded without missing a beat. As the first two on, they got to sit in the back, giving them a break from the others’ staring. Not that that stopped Gil, who Druig was certain had glanced back at them more than once during the short car ride. Makkari was too busy filling him in on more important matters to take notice.
Dane didn’t say exactly when, but he said he’d ask Sersi out before today. Does she seem any different than usual?
Hard to say, they put us on the shuttle as soon as she got here. Guess we’ll have to wait until lunch to know for sure… unless you can ask her before then.
Right on cue, Druig spotted that mischievous glint in Makkari’s eyes, just as he’d known he would.
Challenge accepted! she declared.
As Druig had witnessed over the past few weeks, Makkari worked quickly in just about everything. Now, that included asking Sersi about Dane. As soon as they got off the shuttle, she made her way over to the other baker and seemed to be making casual conversation as they walked. Being behind them, Druig couldn’t see what they were saying, but he suddenly noticed Sersi’s face starting to turn a bit red as she tried to hold back a smile. And just like that, Makkari gave the other woman a thumbs up and skipped back to Druig. He raised an eyebrow in question, though he already knew the answer. She nodded her head once and bumped his shoulder with her own. He couldn’t help but grin as he returned the gesture.
The rest of the group had begun looking back and forth between them and Sersi. Darcy and Kingo, who were already walking out to meet them, had picked up on it right away. While Darcy opted not to comment on it, explaining the day’s proceedings as usual, Kingo made a beeline for Makkari.
“What’s up with Sersi?” he demanded in a stage whisper.
Wouldn’t you like to know, Makkari replied with a wry smile.
“Seriously? Holding out on me now?” Kingo said, completely devoid of emotion. He began to turn to Druig.
“Don’t look at me,” Druig insisted before Kingo could get a word out.
“C’mon! If this is pertaining to the Sersi case, I need to be brought in. I am the Mrs. Hudson of this group.”
“And Mrs. Hudson doesn’t usually participate in cases.”
“Pleeeease? It’s bad enough I don’t get to go to dinners anymore when I started the whole thing. Lunch just isn’t the same. I’m so behind on all the group gossip now!”
At that, Makkari and Druig turned to each other. Her eyebrows furrowed in a questioning look. He answered with a pointed look at Kingo before raising his eyebrows at her. She tilted her head slightly, her expression softening a bit, but her gaze remained firm. Druig felt his resolve slipping away as a small smile settled on his lips. She returned the smile before turning back to Kingo to say, Fine, I’ll tell you at lunch.
Druig thought Kingo would be elated. Instead, he was now looking back and forth at the two of them, his expression somewhere between utter surprise and abject disgust. Finally, he said, “I don’t even know what I just watched. Is this new? Because I hate it.”
Druig couldn’t help but scoff, while Makkari’s jaw had dropped. Recovering from the initial shock, she retorted, You’re just jealous!
“Jealous of what? That you can communicate telepathically with Druig now? Who’d even want to do that? Mind reading is a curse! All the movies say so!”
“Well, telepathy usually comes with mind control, which might come in handy,” Druig remarked.
Yeah, I could mind control Kingo into being a less judgmental friend, Makkari added, narrowing her eyes at the man in question.
“Hey, real friends tell each other when they’re being weird and kind of creepy!” Kingo defended.
“Shouldn’t real friends accept each other without judgment?” Druig asked. Kingo opened his mouth to respond but found he had no comeback.
If you keep judging us, I won’t tell you anything about the new developments in the Sersi case, Makkari said, standing tall even though she was a good deal shorter than Kingo. He merely sighed and rolled his eyes, immediately folding under her unwavering gaze.
“Fine, I won’t comment on it anymore,” he relented. “At least not verbally. I can’t be held accountable for the faces I make if I see that again.”
“Isn’t controlling your face sort of a big part of acting?” Druig quipped, prompting Makkari to burst into laughter. Kingo’s jaw was practically on the floor. As he gathered himself to respond, Makkari grabbed Druig’s hand and pulled him toward the tent, where the rest of the group had already moved, leaving Kingo trailing after them as he tried to whisper-shout his response.
-
Aka, the one where everyone is looking at Drukkari like: 👀👀👀 Anyway, hope you enjoyed that chapter!

can we have submissive Thena and Dominant Gil? (Ten things I hate about you AU) 🫶🏼
Her head was tilted to the side as she laughed at what he said. Her stance was relaxed, leaning against the doorway. Her hand floated in the air, swirling around the last of her fruity low-percentage cooler. He was continuing his story, soaking up her laughter, gesticulating and posing. He flexed his arms in his tight purple t-shirt.
Gil didn't know who the fuck this guy was, but he was way too close to his Thena.
His girl--his woman! And she had even agreed to it! She wasn't calling herself his girlfriend, sure, but they were hanging out together more, she let him pick her up from practise and drive her home. He was allowed to hold her hand sometimes and she'd even kiss him in public if no one was blatantly watching them.
Gil thought that counted as being an official couple! It was pretty big to him, at least. And yet here she was, chatting up some guy he'd never seen before. He was tall, handsome, obviously worked out. Maybe he was older--maybe he was some college jock. If that was the case, Gil was going to march right over there and call him a creep for coming to a high school party.
Thena laughed again, and the guy laughed too, even putting his hand on her shoulder.
That was more than enough. Gil tossed down his empty solo cup. All he'd had in it was soda anyway. He had to drive his princess home, after all. Someone bumped into him in the crowded kitchen but he shoved the younger student out of his way.
"Gil," she smiled at him like everything was peachy. She extended her hand, just about ready to pat her new friend on the chest, "this is-"
"C'mere," Gil rumbled, grabbing her hand before she could feel up the beefcake in front of her. He swept her sharply around the corner and into the bathroom. "Look at me."
"What?" she gave him a look for his manhandling of her. Her eyes were clear though, so she wasn't drunk. "I was trying to-"
He pulled her to him, searing their lips together. She moaned into him, her hands already under his hoodie and squeezing the material of his t-shirt. His tongue demanded entrance, and she granted it.
"Gil," she whimpered as he wrapped his arm around her waist. She fit against him so perfectly, it never ceased to amaze him. She tugged at his shirt, guiding him away from the door.
He put his hand against the wall beside the mirror. Fuck, this was a tiny room! The sink was behind them, him keeping the porcelain edge from digging into her back.
"What are you doing?" she whispered, although she was the one still kissing him.
"What am I doing?" he growled, sliding his hand up her back. "I'm watching some beefcake chat up my girlfriend."
"Oh," she made a cute but also infuriating little sound. "Your girlfriend, am I?"
Little minx--his little shrew, rather. He pressed closer. He was getting a little too worked up over all this, and he didn't give a fuck. "Didn't you say you were mine?"
He felt her shiver in his arms. Their hips kept bumping together from the sheer lack of space. His jeans were getting tight, and she just had on some pretty white skirt and a cardigan she liked.
He had never believed cardigans could be the sexiest article of clothing in the world before this enchantress, and yet here he was dying to get a peek of her bra clasp in the back of it.
"Did I?"
He kept himself close, his breathing was heavy and loud. But it wasn't the only heavy breathing in their little chamber. "Tell me now."
Thena liked getting him a little worked up. She bit into her lower lip, grinning like they were playing a game. Such a wicked woman he'd chosen to fall in love with. "Why should I?"
He breathed out so roughly it made a sound. She pressed closer to him, letting him feel her boobs against his chest and rubbing her thigh against his crotch. He grunted.
"What will you do?"
He reached beside him, fumbling for the door's lock. It clicked, and he held Thena's eyes as he reached down for his belt. "Whose bed were we in last night?"
"Yours," she whispered, her eyes going from their bright green to a dark forest colour. She bit her lip again as she watched him pull himself out.
He moved his hand around her waist and in front of her, only to flip her position, making her brace herself against the sink. "Who do you kiss after practice?"
"You," she repeated, her voice growing higher and thinner as he inched her skirt up her legs.
"Whose girl are you?" he groaned as he finally got her skirt up around her hips. He hooked his finger in the back of her thong and delicately pulled it out of his way.
"Yours," she gasped as he touched himself to her completely bare.
"Whose?" he repeated, running himself along her wetness first. She arched her back and pushed her hips more towards him. He grasped her buttocks, spreading her more.
"Yours, Gil, fuck."
He pushed into her slowly. His head tipped back and his eyes slid closed. This was the most anything he had ever felt ever. He held Thena's hips, barely able to register that he was still living and breathing.
She trembled, but he gripped her tighter, refusing to let her fall. She leaned heavily over the sink, her shoes scraping on the tile floor.
"Shit," he cursed, his hips beginning to move without any need to be told. He had never acted so purely on instinct in his life. He kept his hands on his hips. "Thena."
"Gil, yes, more," she panted as he moved. She wasn't in the best position, but she did what she could to match his thrusts. She kept her head down, not up to the task of seeing her expression in the mirror. He had gotten just a glimpse of it.
Her mouth was dropped open with pleasure.
"Tell me," he grunted, picking up speed. This was not what one did with the girl they loved--fucking in a bathroom at a party. But they would only be young once, and this felt nothing if not...urgent. He gripped one of her thighs and lifted it, letting him get closer (deeper). "Tell me!"
"Yours, I'm all yours," she offered, her body responding completely differently as he held her leg. She made a new sound as he lifted it even higher, holding it close to him. "Shit, Gil, I'm so yours, fuck!"
That was what he wanted to hear. He wanted to hear that he was the only man for her, that he was the only one privy to this side of her, this feeling of being with her.
"Fuck," he growled, "I-I'm so close, I gotta--I-I gotta-!"
Thena moaned directly into the bowl of the sink, it even echoed faintly as he came in the blink of an eye. His hips were still moving, and she followed, her muscles tightening around him. Her leg spasmed.
"Okay, okay, I got'cha," he panted for breath as he lowered her leg, gripping her hips against his as she shook. She all but melted into the sink, her hair spilling like the faucet was the one letting her golden curls get everywhere.
He leaned forward, pulling her hair away and nuzzling the back of her neck. "Babe?"
She made some kind of noise in response. He wasn't sure if it was a grunt or a moan or a whimper, but it sounded somewhat displeased.
"Princess?" he tried again, more sweetly. Things might have gone...too far. "You okay?"
She definitely groaned this time, pointing at the towels against the hand rack on the back of the door.
"R-Right," Gil blinked, he grabbed the softest one, pressing it into her hand gently. He stepped away only slightly, worried she would collapse onto the ground. He stuffed himself back into his pants sheepishly. More laundry to do. Gramps was gonna start getting suspicious.
Thena quickly brought the towel between her legs, moaning faintly as she pressed her thighs together. She pulled it away and tugged her skirt down again, finally picking herself up from the edge of the sink.
Gil cleared his throat, "uh, honey?"
She turned, glaring at him, although there was a distinct flush in her cheeks and down her neck. "You are unbelievable."
He really couldn't help but feel a little proud of that, even if she didn't mean it as a good thing. He grinned, although she slapped him on the chest for it. He chuckled, "sorry."
She rolled her eyes at him, fluffing out her hair again and making sure she looked like they hadn't been fucking. She raised her eyebrows at him, asking in not so many words.
He held his thumbs up and smiled at her; back to being a dork, great. "Looks great!"
She jabbed the towel into the center of his chest. "I thought you would be above feelings of possessiveness."
He grasped her hand, refusing to let her pull away. He wrapped his arm around her again, and she did let him. "I don't need to possess you."
She eyed him, but it was a sign to continue.
And she did seem to appreciate when he said things he really meant. So he leaned in close again, hovering just short of a kiss away. "You're the one who possesses me, Thena. All the time, every waking moment."
Her breath caught, and her skin was still flushed a pretty shade of pink.
"I just need to know you're mine," he finished in a whisper before kissing her. It was a proper kiss this time, soft and tender, the way he preferred to kiss her perfect lips.
Her hands slid up his chest, although it reminded him of the beefcake probably still lurking around. She pulled away and put her hands on his cheeks, "then consider it done."
It wasn't a 'I am yours', but he would take it with gratitude. He smiled and she offered a faint one back. She kicked the towel that had fallen to the floor out of the way. "All this over an old friend."
He bristled, all of his pent up frustration rising again in a flash. "Old friend?"
But Thena gave him that smug look that she got any time she was talking circles around someone. He had fallen for that look at the movies the first time he met her. "Kingo dropped out last year to pursue acting. He's in a film coming out next year. That's why he's so pleased with all his personal training results."
That was why he was flexing in her face, she meant.
Gil pursed his lips. "So he's a childhood friend who's all hot and cool?--that's supposed to make me feel better?"
"Gil," she rolled her eyes, laughing.
"You were laughing!"
"Gil," she said a little more affectionately, leaning on him completely now. "Kingo is a dear friend. One who has absolutely no interest in matters of the flesh, or the heart, for that matter."
"Oh," he blinked, taking in the look she had for him. It wasn't even that they were friends, but he didn't consider her like that apparently--he didn't think of anyone like that, rather. "Uh, well, that's-"
She threw her head back in a full and complete belly laugh.
His cheeks burned as the last embers of his jealousy ate themselves to death. "Okay, okay, yeah, get it all out."
She did. She laughed for a long time. Maybe she was having a little too much fun with it, he thought, but she did eventually quiet again. She lifted her head from his chest and kissed him. "You have nothing to fear from him...nor anyone."
She reached through his arms to flick the door unlocked again. This was the end of the conversation for her ladyship. Gil sighed, "if you say so."
"He is a very good friend, Gil," she made a point of telling him again as they both prepared to show their faces again. She pulled the door open a crack, "exemplified by his loyalty."
As soon as the door was open Gil could hear the guy's voice, louder than even the blaring music that would definitely drown them out unless ears were pressed to the door. And even if they had been, as soon as the door was open, all he saw was his back.
"Sorry, my friend isn't feeling well. But there's another bathroom upstairs!"
"Kingo," Thena raised her voice to be heard. It was easy to forget how loud it was in the mix of things. She patted his shoulder, "thanks for guarding the door. I'm feeling better."
"Oh good!" he beamed at her as if nothing at all had taken place. He waved off those he had been holding off. Once without an audience, he leaned down closer to her face again. "What the hell, T?!"
"Sorry, sorry!" she giggled at his exaggerated expression. "But thank you."
He gave Gil a completely unreadable look before turning back to Thena, his thick arms crossed at her. "He was holding back your hair, huh?"
Gil blushed, since he obviously knew what they were doing in there. But Thena just slapped his chest, which he guessed was fine, now that he knew more about the guy.
"Shut it!" she hissed at him, a full scarlet red, now.
But Kingo ruffled her hair, like he would a young sister. She only hissed at him more, but he laughed. "Relax, T, my mouth is shut and I didn't see anything!"
Gil blinked as a heavy - heavy - hand was slapped onto his shoulder. "Uh-"
"I've heard a lot about you, Gil," he said with a smile, but it sounded an awful lot like a threat. When he opened his eyes again, Gil could swear they could glow like a demon's. "Nice to meet T's boyfriend."
He didn't sound like he meant that.
"Leave him alone," Thena defused him, tugging at his t-shirt, only for him to immediately scold her for creasing its expensive material.
It was a t-shirt.
"You go, be with your precious Gilgamesh," Kingo waved her off like he was dismissing a student. "I'll come find you tomorrow."
"Fine," she sighed as if exasperated, but their familiarity and affection for each other shone through. She waved as he made his way into the other room. "Find me after practice!"
"Not right after though, right?" Kingo winked at her. "You'll be busy kissing a certain someone?"
"Kingo!!!"

god,   he was chatty,   wasn’t he?    especially considering she hadn’t uttered a single word in response in the past ten minutes.   a long sigh is pulled easily from her lips;   the golden light of sunrise breaching the horizon before them from the watch tower where they stood along the dingy metal railing that encircled.     ‟  you know,   i really don’t need to know your whole life story.  ”      there’s plainness to her voice,   nothing quite malicious which dances onto the tip of her tongue but more so an emanation of truth.   she didn’t need to know;   in fact,   most people nowadays took to abstaining from sharing so openly but he seemed relatively comfortable in doing so.

I Get a Sugar Rush Whenever I'm With You - Chapter 8.3
Good evening fellow Drukkari stans, or whatever time it is for you! I come bearing another mini-chapter! If you've fallen behind and need to catch up, you can find all previous installments on my Table of Contents here. Druig is still trying to figure out what Sersi (and Makkari) is up to, but he's hoping Kingo will help him make some headway. Will he succeed? Find out now, in the next mini-chapter of Drukkari in the Great British Bake Off!
Tumblr media
The delicate balance Druig was trying to maintain tipped heavily with the technical. While he'd suspected his previous win would be a fluke, coming in dead last the very next week was still a low blow. He did his best to get his moping out before dinner, as he'd have other things to think about. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only one moping this week.
"Cheer up, Sersi. At least you made it to Week Eight," Kingo said, trying and failing to sound upbeat. Right on cue, he was hit by a flying crouton. "I haven't missed that."
You're making it sound like she's already lost, Makkari chided as he glared at her.
"There's always tomorrow," Gil added, sounding a little more reassuring than Kingo.
"Thanks, but I've definitely got my work cut out for me tomorrow," Sersi noted, wearing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"At least you didn't come in last," Druig muttered, earning a genuinely sympathetic smile from Sersi.
"So, this is what he's usually like?" Phastos asked.
"More or less, yes," Sersi confirmed.
"Okay, enough brooding! Fill me in on all the dinner gossip I've been missing!" Kingo interjected.
I already filled you in, so you haven't missed much! Makkari declared.
"Seriously? Wow, you really need me around to keep things interesting, don't you," he replied smugly, prompting Makkari to roll her eyes.
"So, you've told him about all our love lives?" Gil asked nonchalantly.
"I mean, she didn't go into as much detail as she could've, but yes," Kingo remarked. "You and Thena were pretty obvious, though, so I figured that out on my own."
"I'm not repeating my stories from last week," Phastos declared.
"That's fine, I'm more interested in drama between bakers. No offense."
"Offense taken."
"And I already know about Sersi and Dane, of course."
"Of course," Sersi responded before turning to Makkari and Druig. That reminds me we still haven't picked a time for drinks.
"Excuse me, just because you didn't say it out loud doesn't mean I didn't see that. What's this about drinks?" Kingo interjected. Druig's expression was unreadable, but Sersi and Makkari gave each other a slightly panicked look as the rest of the group waited expectantly. Wincing, Sersi spoke up first.
"I was just going to treat Makkari and Druig to drinks for helping me with Dane," she admitted. As they had feared, Kingo was not amused.
"I said we should go out for drinks together weeks ago! I helped with Dane, too. And you were just going to go without me!?" he ranted.
"Sorry, I didn't know you helped," Sersi said sheepishly.
Well, you didn't help that much, Makkari added.
"I helped enough to warrant an invitation!" Kingo insisted.
Much to Druig's confusion, a mildly pained look came over both Sersi and Makkari's faces. The rest of them had all lapsed into an awkward silence as they watched the conversation play out. Finally, Makkari gave Druig a quick look before she spoke.
Sersi, can Kingo come too?
"Always room for one more," Sersi answered. The two women looked at Kingo in anxious anticipation. He stared them down for a moment before letting out a sigh.
"I'll have to make room in my very busy schedule, but sure, I'd love to."
Druig swore he could see the tension leaving Makkari and Sersi's shoulders, but not entirely. The group collectively began picking at whatever food they had left before Phastos broke the silence.
"Well, Kingo, you do keep things lively."
"Told you," he replied proudly.
-
In all the excitement, Kingo had completely forgotten the ultimate reason he'd been invited to dinner. He'd also forgotten what time he needed to leave to sneak back to his hotel, and it was now quite late, a fact that only crossed his mind as they were leaving Sersi's room. Druig was about to volunteer his room when, much to his surprise, Makkari beat him to it.
You can take mine. I'll ask Sersi if I can share with her, she said. I just need to get a couple things first.
"Thanks, even if you didn't tell Sersi how useful I was in getting her and Dane together," he responded.
"We're very sorry, Kingo. We'll make sure we invite you to every outing for eternity," Druig deadpanned.
"That would be much appreciated. Goodnight." And with that he walked away.
Makkari turned back to Druig to bid him goodnight when he asked, Can we talk? Before you go to Sersi's?
She nodded before running after Kingo.
-
About ten minutes later, there was a knock on Druig's door. He opened it to find Makkari, now in pajamas. Before he could say anything, she was already pushing past him and into the room, so he shut the door behind her.
I'm sorry Kingo blew it, Makkari said when he turned back around.
That certainly didn't go the way we thought, but I wouldn't say he blew it completely, Druig answered carefully.
Really? How so? she asked.
I knew there was something odd about Sersi suddenly wanting to take us out for drinks. Tonight, she was very reluctant to invite Kingo, he observed.
I guess she was, Makkari said. She was avoiding eye contact.
You were as well, he pointed out.
Was I? I did ask Sersi to invite him, she continued, her face beginning to flush. Druig took a step toward her as he pushed on.
Makkari, you know what Sersi's planning, don't you?
She took a deep breath and finally looked him in the eye. Druig could see a flurry of emotions running through her mind. I might, she said meekly.
Why didn't you tell me? he asked in earnest.
It's a surprise, she answered, a hint of a smile on her face.
A surprise… for me?
Makkari nodded, her smile growing. An odd sensation that felt like a mixture of relief and anticipation washed over him.
And Kingo being there ruins it?
I've said too much. I can't tell you any more, she said firmly.
You mean you're still not going to tell me what it is? he said, eyebrows raising.
Nope. I'm sworn to secrecy.
Without another word, Druig took a few steps away and collapsed face first onto his bed like a petulant child. Just as he'd hoped, Makkari barked out a laugh. He suppressed a smile as he turned over to sign, Merciful Makkari, please put me out of my misery.
Dearest Druig, I'm afraid I can't do that, she answered, still giggling as she walked over to sit by him on the bed.
Why not?
I pinky promised.
Alright, I can see your hands are tied. This prompted another round of giggles from Makkari. Once she'd calmed down again, Druig asked, Is it at least a good surprise?
I hope so, she said thoughtfully. Okay, that's all I'm saying about it. No more questions.
Very well, he conceded with a sigh. What should we talk about, then?
How delicious Gil's pie was today?
That was an incredible pie. Must've been working on the recipe for ages.
They talked on and on, jumping from subject to subject with the ease of two people who'd known each other for years. Sometimes, Druig had to remind himself they'd only met a couple of months ago. While he fought it for as long as he could, Druig eventually felt himself drifting off into a restful sleep.
-
Leave it to Kingo to help by also completely messing things up 🤣 Anyway, hope you enjoyed this mini-installment!
