Japanese talent agency Aoni Production announced today that voice actor Saori Sugimoto passed away on October 21 because of congestive heart failure that was due to anorexia. Sugimoto was most well known in Japan for voicing many characters in children's programming, such as the voice of both Ramurin and Nyakkii in the Shimajiro early-learning franchise, as well as the second generation voice of Kisanta Yamamura in the Nintama Rantaro anime, taking over the role from Tomiko Suzuki, who passed in 2003.
For western fans, Sugimoto would be recognized as the voice of Catherine Bloom in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, as well as voices in the Ninja Gaiden OVA and the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA. Sugimoto also voiced roles in Crayon Shin-chan and Chibi Maruko-chan, which spanned over three decades. A private funeral was held for family members on October 28.

[Nintama Fanfiction] What Love Makes You
[Nintama Fanfiction]
Title: What Love Makes You
Fandom: Nintama Rantarou
Rating: PG-13
Characters and Pairings: 15 years old Danzou, Torawaka, Kingou, Heidayuu, Sanjirou and Kisanta. Contained mainly Kingou/Kisanta and slight Tora/Sanjirou also Danzou/Heidayuu.
Modern school life AU fics. Boys crushes towards boys.
I don’t find many Nintama fanfic around…so I made one /hides
xxxx
Kingou never understand Danzou’s obsession about that Karakuri maniac in their class, Sasayama Heidayuu, nor about Torawaka’s pure adoration of that boy who sat in front of him, Yumesaki Sanjirou. Torawaka never stopped going about how sweet Sanjirou’s smile was and how cute he was when he laugh, closely as often as his fanboy talks over his shooting teacher Shousei-san, when Danzou –curse him, that pervert –he got nosebleed once when he saw Heidayuu’s shirt pulled up as the boy jumped to catch a volleyball serve in Physical Education class.
Well, he knew both of those guys mentioned above were indeed cute, and being in the boys-only school, attracted to another ones who could be categorized as pretty more than manly were fairly accepted.
But… first, Danzou, to Heidayuu?
Danzou, Katou Danzou, his best buddy, was so manly, he’s all “Horse is cool” and rolled-up sleeves showing his strong arm muscles. To think that Danzou actually had interest in boys was strange enough, and it’s even stranger because it’s Sasayama Heidayuu.
Sasayama Heidayuu always caught making something in the middle of the class, mostly dolls and toys with karakuri technic, and sometimes he even build that Phytagoras Switch things on his desk when he was bored. Not a simple one with eraser domino, but involved something scarier like protractor and rubber band and else.
Kingou shuddered on the thought that guy could make a mechanical toy in the middle of the class, and they worked. That’s pretty creepy.
He’s certainly wasn’t Danzou type, even if he’s a girl, especially with that very sharp tongue every time he decided to speak up.
And Torawaka. Torawaka could get any girl he wanted –he got that big, strong build that girls always dreamed their boyfriend had, he got an innocent look over that strong jaw that unexpectedly made a pretty combination, and girls were always extremely swooned when he walked up to the stage for his number of shooting at the competition.
If he could actually fell for any man, everybody was sure it’ll be his Shousei-san he adored so much, but no, apparently that’s mere adoration, because there he was, looking at that Sanjirou boy who telling a joke while laughing in front of him with such dreamy eyes.
So for conclusion, Kingou decided that love will make you either blind, stupid, or someone that wasn’t yourself.
He thought all of those things above in his head as he roamed angrily across the school’s corridors, while cursing with his mouth. Love made his buddies stupid and became someone else, and especially extremely forgetful, too. It’s not the first time he’s being left out, after Danzou decided stalking Heidayuu and followed him everywhere was the best way to soften the brunette’s heart, while Torawaka was always unable to say no to anything Sanjirou ask him, this time to accompany him buying Yumesaki family’s dinner ingredients in the shopping center.
The worst part, of course, that they always told him only after Kingou already waited for them for hours.
This was not the first time he had to go home very much late all by himself. Today was even more sucks because it started raining five minutes ago and Kingou didn’t bring any damn umbrella.
So he had to wait more to go home.
Dammit.
Kingou put on his uniform’s blazer as he walked to the shoes locker. He thought he must be the only one left in the entire school, but he realized soon he’s wrong as he saw a figure near the school’s front entrance, squatting with his eyes fixed on the nearest bushes.
He knew that guy –Yamamura Kisanta, they’re in the same class. He haven’t remembered all the guys in the class, but this one was pretty sticking out because he sat beside Kingou and he always have a clay jar sitting on the corner of his desk. Kingou didn’t know the content, but he’s curious now…
“Hey.”
That guy practically jumped when he heard Kingou, and he looked back frantically, eyes wide and mouth gaped.
“Sorry! Did I startle you?” Kingou apologized immediately, and watched as the expression of that boy changed from pout to a wide grin.
“Nope, nope, I just didn’t expect there’s anyone else here.” He laughed. Kingou noted that boy’s extremely sugar-coated voice. It’s almost like he’s years younger than they supposed to age.
Kingou watched the boy’s slanted eyes blinked and he seemed a bit dumbfounded –he must be didn’t remember they belong in the same class. Kingou laughed, tried to explain, “We are in the same class… we sit next to each other.”
“UH –RIGHT!” The boy stood up as the act of his surprise, and he smiled, “Sorry about that… I’m Yamamura Kisanta!”
“It’s okay, really.” Kingou grinned, “It’s been two months but I can’t say I remember everyone that well either. I’m Minamoto Kingou.”
“Kingou, ne.” Kisanta smiled. He didn’t talk more, he back to the squatting and watching the bushes.
Kingou wrinkled his eyebrow –“What are you doing here, anyway?”
Kisanta looked surprised when he looked up, and but then he said with a wide smile, “Oh, I was watching them.” He gestured to four something moving slowly under the leaves of bushes. Kingou raised his eyebrow –slugs?
“Slugs?” Kingou blinked, “What are you doing with slugs?”
“Uh…” Kisanta hummed, but before he could answer, Kingou saw the jar sitting beside the boy, and asked, “Oh, I always curious about that jar too, the one that’s always on your desk, what’s that?”
“Well…” Kisanta grinned, “I collected them.”
“You mean… there’re… s-slugs? Inside?” Kingou gulped a bit –this guy in front of him had very interesting preferences of pet to keep.
Kisanta nodded, “Yep! I’m thinking of taking more of them from this bush!”
“Oh, right…” Kingou blinked, stepped closer to Kisanta and squatted beside him, “What are they eating?” Well, he indeed thought that collecting slugs were extremely strange, but he had to say it’s so unique, too.
Kisanta, who’s already back with the slugs watching, looked startled again for the second time when Kingou asked more, but quickly offered him a big smile, eyes grew to a pair of mere laughing lines, “Slugs enjoy leaves, but they really like lettuce! Sometimes I add mustard or mayonnaise and they eat even more!”
“Really?” Kingou laughed, eyes can’t take off from how those slanted eyes hiding behind the pair of lashes and blinding smile, “Are there many slugs inside the jar?”
The boy stared again, before answering, “Yep! I got more than twenty, there’s Namemaru and Nameko and Namesuke and Nameichi….”
“You gave each of them name?” Kingou grinned.
“Um!” Kisanta laughed, then he stared again, this time with a smile in his lips.
Kingou blinked, “What? Is there something in my face?”
“I never really talk much about my slugs with anyone before.” He grinned, “It’s actually very fun!”
“Well, you don’t find person who keep slugs as pet every day,” Kingou scratched his cheek, “It’s obvious that I’m curious, right?”
Kisanta smiled, “Not everyone is curious, you know!”
“Really?” Kingou hummed, “But maybe it’s because I’m very used to something quirky. I mean Torawaka,” Kingou added before Kisanta asked, “You know, Satake Torawaka, he’s also in our class.”
“Oh, the big guy!” Kisanta nodded.
“Yup, that one! He’s my best friend, he’s tough big guy yet he’s a fanboy of his own shooting teacher. To the point he talked about him every day, even in his sleep!”
Kisanta giggled, “Really? Satake-kun is?”
“Yes, isn’t that weird enough?” Kingou shook his head, “Then my other friend, Danzou, he’s like, so obsessed about one type of animal… but in his case it’s horse, not slugs. Well he got a family ranch in his hometown village, and he rides them very well, but he liked them too much, you see! If horse was slug size, maybe he will hold them in jar too, like yours, and bringing it everywhere.”
They both laughed, then Kisanta added, “But Kingou, you too.”
“What? Me?” Kingou blinked his eyes.
Kisanta smiled, “You always reading a manga about samurai in the class, too, and you learned kendou too, right? Aren’t you too, obsessed in something?”
Kingou blushed, “W-What? How do you know?”
Kisanta laughed, “Well, we sat next to each other…”
“But you don’t even know my name before!”
And when Kingou mentioned this, the boy in front of him flushed bright.
“A-Ah, right, I-I mean, I remember… someone in the class who sat next to me… uh…” He stuttered, but then he stood up and laughed, “W-Well, I just know!”
“What?” Kingou wanted to laugh, “If you actually know me, you should just say so in the first time!”
“Uh, I- I never expected you to know me.” Kisanta laughed, face flushed.
Kingou wrinkled his eyebrow, “Why?”
Kisanta looked very lost, so Kingou decided he will stop pushing the brunette, “Sorry, sorry, it’s okay. But I know you, of course, we literally sit next to each other, right?”
Kisanta said, face still deep red, “Yeah, but well, we never exchanged any greetings or anything. You always… with Satake-kun and Katou-kun.”
“Well but now we know each other, so we can exchange greetings and such!” Kingou grinned.
Kisanta beamed, brightly, by that sentence alone.
The same unforgotten looks that appeared on his face again by the next day, as Kingou stepped into the class and saw Kisanta already on his seat, paying full attention towards his slugs jar, and Kingou called him, “Kisanta, morning!”
He smiled, eyes sparkled even more, as he replied, “Morning, Kingou!”
Kingou grinned back, felt like he actually beamed, too, by the smile.
xxx
Kisanta turned out to be very cool guy to hang out with. Kisanta pointed out that he actually read the manga he always saw Kingou read in the class too, and from there the talks continued. Apparently they read many more same manga titles so they talked a lot about chapters’ updates, fanboying over the characters and laughing together on the comedic scenes.
Kisanta didn’t have close friend before –he used to enjoy his time alone talking with his slugs. Now he got Kingou to talk with about his slugs and everything else. Kingou didn’t even bothered with the fact that the smiling eyes boy introduced him to every of his slugs, and by the end of the month, he quite remembered all of them already. He found new person to hang out with when Danzou was too busy trying to impress Heidayuu and Torawaka (not be able to reject to not) following Sanjirou around.
They ate lunch together on rooftop and sometimes grabbed food after school. One day in Mac, after finished their burgers and fries, Kisanta told Kingou that he used to live in his hometown in the mountain (his family owns a dairy industry there). Kingou couldn’t miss the hint that Kisanta actually liked it more there, by the way his slanted eyes glinted and his dreamy tone as he said, “There’re a looott of wild animals there, especially slugs, especially after the rain. The air is clear and it’s cool, even in the summer. We picked fruits from our backyard and eat them right under the trees. If we got too much, we made the jam and pickle ourselves.”
Kingou imagined the scenes of countrysides villages from television, and nodded, “That’s cool.”
“Yeah, it is! It’s nice to spend summer holiday there!” Kisanta grinned, “You may come too if you want. We got some kind of guest house too near the factory and I’m sure I’ll be allowed to bring a friend over.”
Kingou smiled, “That’s interesting! Only… well, I will spend my entire summer holiday most likely with practicing kendou, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it…”
“Oh, right.” Kisanta looked a bit disappointed, but then he looked excited when he asked, “You like kendou that much?”
“As much as you like slugs, maybe?” Kingou laughed, chewed on the edge of his straw.
Kisanta’s eyes widened, “Then it’s your obsession.”
“Kinda?” Kingou grinned, “Well it’s my family dojo, and even before I can hold my spoon right, they taught me how to hold the wood sword first.”
“Wow.” Kisanta nodded, eyes didn’t leaving Kingou as he crunched the ice cubes between his teeth.
“There’ll be practice match in two weeks, and everybody can watch.” Kingou offered.
“Everybody?”
Kingou corrected, “Everybody who allowed.”
Kisanta stifled his laugh, then smiled, “Am I allowed, then? I will come.”
“Great.” Kingou smiled, “I had to win, then.”
Two weeks passed with stingy feet and sore arms, and that’s all Kingou could remember. He practiced till late when it’s weekdays and all the time in weekends. He didn’t even able to reply much to Kisanta’s messaged, because he fell asleep immediately as he managed to climb on his bed.
A message came next morning, just a day before the match, with a little more surprised in it –Kingou had to rub on his eyes twice because he thought he’s still half-asleep, but it’s indeed from Danzou, with a little angry tone in it:
Dammit, you got a match tomorrow?
Usually he always told Danzou and Torawaka to come to watch, and he didn’t know why he forgot about it this time. He told Kisanta, though… and thinking it’s enough.
He typed an answer and moved slowly with his tired legs to reach the bathroom.
Yes, sorry, I rly forgot to tell you and Tora. Who told you?
The black cellphone vibrated as a new message notification as Kingou brushed his teeth.
…I don’t know how to react abt this. Getting angry will be very sissy, but I’m quite pissed right now. AND IT’S DAMN TOMORROW.
Kingou just wanted to send him the last question once again but then a new message popped on his phone screen.
Heidayuu told me, apparently he’s quite close with your new crush.
Kingou snorted. Talking about close enough –so Danzou was close enough with Heidayuu now for the brunette to tell him about any damn thing. Before, Heidayuu always looked like he wanted to search for another air to breathe than ones around Danzou.
By the way, what crush?
Congrats abt Heidayuu, and who the hell is my crush.
Despite being pissed with him, Danzou actually replied again:
Thanks, but it’s actually not that good –he’s still got mouth sharper than sword displayed on your living room. But it’s sexy anyway, so it’s okay. Oh, and your crush, isn’t it that Kisanta guy.
Kingou cringed at the sexy word used. Upon a guy, from a guy. Feels bit off.
Kisanta is not my crush, he’s a friend.
The sarcasm was so strong on Danzou’s next message.
Well a special enough friend that you told about the match when you two-others-for-ten-years weren’t.
It’s definitely exaggeration. No way three of them had been friends for ten years… They’re fifteen now, they didn’t start hanging out since they’re five… did they? Kingou decided to not replying anymore.
He definitely wasn’t having any crush on Kisanta. Kisanta is great friend and funny one, those eyes that turned to thin lines every time he pulled on a wide smile is pretty cute, but nothing more.
Of course not. Danzou is a bastard for sure. Tora was always a bit better about controlling his emotion and mouth.
xxx
Today Kisanta stayed at home because he caught bad cold. He almost didn’t see the message because he thought it’s from Danzou again, luckily he checked anyway.
I tried to collect slugs in the rain and fell sick. Had to stay on bed so I’ll be able to make it to your match tomorrow! Take care of my seat for me. Hehe.
Kingou always loved how Kisanta put little ‘hehe’ in his every message. It reminds Kingou about how smiley was the boy, indeed. Kingou planned to came over as soon as the bell rung, he will bring Kisanta an orange jelly and some refreshing vitamin C contained foods. And more lettuce for the slugs, maybe. He didn’t even realized Danzou had moved to Kisanta’s empty seat on the next lesson.
He didn’t even really pay attention when Danzou said about how he finally managed to get Heidayuu to go watch Kingou’s match together –though Heidayuu only went with condition that they will bring along Sanjirou (apparently those two were great buddy) and Torawaka.
“Good.” Kingou mumbled, writing down the notes from the blackboard.
“We might watch movie and eat something together afterwards. You want to join us?” Danzou whispered, munching on his ham sandwich behind his English textbook.
“And become more third wheeling than I am already?” Kingou gritted his teeth, “No, thanks.”
“Well, not on your own, idiot.” Danzou gulped with audible sound, froze for a while then looked upon his textbook and checked if the teacher heard that. He didn’t.
He continued, “Bring Kisanta along. It’ll be like triple date or something.”
Kingou thought of it a bit, “I’ll ask.”
“Great.” Danzou grinned, “Lend me your notebook later.”
Since Kisanta wasn’t there and for some reason Danzou and Torawaka actually stayed around with him today (Maybe not being invited to watch his match actually made them realized about how jerk they were recently), Kingou ate together with those two again after two months.
“So how’s everything going?” Torawaka gave Kingou a big smile.
“So how’s everything with this Kisanta guy going?” Danzou grinned.
Kingou blushed a bit, “Shut it. He’s a friend.”
A pair of boys walked passed them, one with straight cut bangs fell to his eyebrow and thick-framed glasses around his sharp, pretty eyes, while the others keep his bangs back, figures much smaller than any men should be on their ages, and he showed everyone a very brightening smile.
Kingou managed to not stick out his tongue in disgust as the pairs exchanged wave with his two friends.
“You tamed that one well.” Kingou mumbled to Danzou.
“Didn’t I,” Danzou said proudly, “It’s even harder than one time when my dad bring a very wild horse home…”
Kingou stuffed his ear with his fingers, “I don’t want to hear about it.”
Torawaka let out a heart-full laugh before dig in to his five storey bentou box.
xxx
“I thought you will invite Satake-kun and Katou-kun, too, so I sort of tell Heidayuu I will watch you match tomorrow. Is it bad?”
Kisanta got red nose and bright flushed cheeks, and Kingou had to look away. He’s too cute.
“No… I don’t understand too.” He walked to Kisanta’s jar and feed the slugs with lettuce he just bought, “How come I didn’t remember to tell them? They’ve been watching for…” Kingou counted in his head, “I don’t know. Eight years?”
“Hmm.” Kisanta just hummed. It’s Kingou first time to Yamamura household. Kisanta lived with his great grandmother who was far too high-spirited for someone her age and his big brother who’s in college, while his parents stayed on the mountain to take care of the family factory. Kisanta’s house was old and traditional, but huge, with large garden. Kingou’s house was old and traditional too, but it got some formal aura hanging from the smooth, polished wooden ceiling to smooth tatami in the room and the very carefully arranged zen garden, while Kisanta’s home was… homey. Kingou could smell food being cooked and bath salts and peeled orange mixed in the house and saw some useless stuff stacked on the corner of the room. The garden was filled with vegetables rows and flowers.
It’s very Kisanta-like, he could just imagined the boy crawled under the wild bushes in the garden after rain to find more slugs.
“So, can you watch tomorrow?” Kingou gave Kisanta the orange jelly –which Kisanta accepted with big grin. The smaller boy nodded, “I’m getting better. Maybe will still got runny nose by tomorrow, but as long as I’m strong enough to get up, it’ll be okay.”
“Don’t push yourself, though.” Kingou told him. Kisanta smiled.
“I won’t.”
xxx
He pedaled his bike home and thinking that maybe Danzou was right.
Maybe he indeed got a little crush on Kisanta.
He thought of how come it happened, because Kisanta is a boy, well, a bright-smiled, cute one, but he’s a boy.
He didn’t supposed to like a boy, especially the one collecting slugs as hobby. Not that he thought it was weird. No, who was he kidding –of course it’s weird, it’s just it’s not actually that weird when it’s Kisanta, and…
Kingou was still in rumble with his own logic when his cellphone vibrated. He put a feet on the ground, held bike with one hand and the other tried to fish out his phone from his pocket.
It’s from Kisanta.
I forgot to tell you that I found a pair of new slugs yesterday. Well it made me sick but it’s worth it. I named them Namekin and Namegou. Is it okay?
He couldn’t tell his mother why he got his face red as he got home.
Love either make you stupid, blind, and someone who’s not yourself –but the truth, it’s kinda make you happy, too.
