The Mysterious Case of Elisa Lam
Tumblr media
Elisa Lam was a Chinese-Canadian student at the University of British Columbia, who on January 26th, 2013 had arrived in Los Angeles. After 2 days she had checked into the Cecil Hotel and was assigned a shared room on the hotel's fifth floor; however, her roommates complained about a "certain odd behaviour," and she was moved to a room of her own. Lam had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression. She had been prescribed four medications to treat her disorders but according to her family, she had no history of suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Lam contacted her parents in British Columbia every day while traveling but on January 31, 2013, the day she was supposed to check out of the Cecil Hotel, they did not receive a call and decided to call the Los Angeles police. Hotel staff who saw her that day said she was alone. Outside the hotel, Katie Orphan, manager of a nearby bookstore, was the only person who saw Lam that day. "She was outgoing, very lively, very friendly," while getting gifts to take home to her family, Orphan told CNN. Police searched the hotel, they searched Lam's room and had dogs go through the building, including the rooftop, but it was unsuccessful.
On February 6, a week after Lam had last been seen, the LAPD decided it was much more serious. Flyers were posted in the neighborhood and online, bringing the case to the public's attention. During the search for Lam, guests at the hotel began complaining about low water pressure. Some later claimed their water was colored black, and had an unusual taste. On the morning of February 19. 2013, Lam was found dead inside the Cecil Hotel’s water tank located on the rooftop. Police say that no signs of drugs, alcohol, physical trauma or suicide were found during the autopsy reports and had declared her death as “accidental due to drowning,” with bipolar disorder as the main cause. The full report released in June stated that Lam's body had been found naked; coated with a "sand-like particulate.” Her watch and room key were also found with her. The police never gave a reasoning to what really happened to Lam or how she spent the weeks before her death but one thing that was sure was that the last place she had been seen was the Cecil Hotel.
How did Elisa Lam, who was apparently not in her right mind end up in the hotel’s water tank, an area very difficult to access?
