7. what’s a negative thing about your character that you enjoy writing?

okay well not really negative but i love how pure-teenage-awkward he is. pathetically awkward. it’s not just girls ( although put him in front of his crush and watch him make an embarrassment of himself ), it’s just that he is and what he is is sort of pathetically A Mess.

on a more serious note. jim thinks he knows what’s best for everyone. long before all this started, his teacher/mentor-figure dubs him  ‘ young atlas, ’  and that’s really what it comes down to. he believes he can, and should, carry everyone’s burden, and he will go behind their back and do anything in his power do this. he uses his authority  (  “ the amulet chose me ” //  “ i’m the one who destroyed your soul ”  //  “ i can’t lose any more of you ”  )  to keep the people he cares about safe, to protect them. his heart’s in the right place, but what he ends up doing is needlessly risking himself and hurting those he cares about even more. he takes responsibility for things he didn’t do, puts himself directly in danger. 

at first he takes on these burdens, takes care of the people he loves, in being close to them – i mean, this is the boy who makes his mother breakfast & to-go meals for work before he leaves for school. but he learns to take on their burdens by pushing them away, by building that cold wall of distance and responsibility. he truly does think everything is his responsibility.

and he gets to lying, to keeping secrets – he has to, of course, in order to protect the hidden world beneath his feet. but it also makes him cunning. it’s incredible character development.

10. what’s the hardest thing for you to write?

i try to be able to write everything; i went to arts school for this shit, and burnt out in arts school over this shit, and found the passion again & used it to pursue publication. with jim, the challenge is to balance his softness with his fierceness & his endurance, his cold compassion with his warm compassion, his sense of responsibility with his just want to have a good time, get by, get at least a b on my exams, play video games with my best friend & dream about riding a motorbike, andd literally the stars with the world around him & his ordinary teenage world.

24. what’s your favorite AU?

spoilers for the season finale. for jim, undoubtedly any au where jim goes into the darklands with a half-enemy on a shaky truce – with strickler or angor rot. the dynamic between the three of them as the series progresses fascinates me, the endless shifting of alliances, truces, the mortal danger each of them poses to the other, right down to jim waiting in the back of strickler’s car with full intent to kill him.

jim locks his friends out, closes a tremendous vault door between them, crying. but the trollhunters team meant for his to be a bittersweet hero’s journey, and as season 1 comes to a close, jim is at the middle step of campbell’s hero’s journey, the step of ordeal, death, and rebirth, the point where he gets his first taste of the change he’ll have to face again at the climax. ( i have a post in the works about this tbh the campbell’s hero thing fascinates me. )

so he cannot bring his friends. sure, they might find him in season 2 – they probably will. but he can certainly bring his enemies. and he’s going into unknown territory, into an underworld where trollhunters before him have fallen, hardened warriors of stone ( literally ) and decades, centuries even, of training. he is going to face gunmar, the beast of the night, ( the eater of flesh and chewer of tongue thanks to the book rip ), a troll so powerful and so dangerous he had to be locked away in the darklands to keep both safe and whose return is so feared that the darklands cannot be opened more than a pinch so as to not risk freeing him. our boy goes in alone, but imagine if he didn’t. imagine if he went in with someone he can’t trust on a personal level, but he can thanks to the principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

52. what’s a trope or plot you think is overdone in roleplay?

i dunno man i love cliches like man cliche me the Funk Up. plus i’m still kind of here in my tiny little bubble in the far corner of tungle rp so i can’t really say i’ve found much that’s repetitive yet
