I can't write replies yet and we're stuck sitting at a raised bridge so its time to list some headcanons for Stephanivien!
Stephan is afraid of chocobos, its a genuine phobia and because of this he often avoids the stables. This stems from an event in his childhood where, upon attempting to learn how to ride, he was granted the wrong chocobo. The one he was given to ride was far less patient than those meant for teaching, and as a result making a small mistake resulted in him being thrown to the ground and breaking his arm and a few ribs. Nowadays, he's sooner to send someone else if the stables request something of the Skysteel Manufactory.
Stephan doesn't like bugs, back before the Calamity it was more often a sibling (or Joye) who either moved or killed bugs he'd find. If he saw one he'd squeak, and that's exactly how one would know he had stumbled upon some form of insect.
He can't swim! Even with Coerthas once being green and full of life, Stephan was often too preoccupied to want to learn.
Though he has his fears, dragons are not one of them and neither are people. He has canonically been seen wielding a basic wrench against a dragon - this is likely not uncommon due to his care for his colleagues and slight forgetfulness in regards to actually arming himself.
That said, he does know his craft but much prefers building. This is where Rostnsthal came in, allowing Stephan to focus on improving his tech for those recruited as machinists while equally training newcomers. Nowadays, Stephan reserves training for how to use his tech, but occasionally does personal lessons for those he deems friends.
Few know this, but Stephanivien's right hand is actually a mechanical prosthetic. He lost his hand in an accident while working on his first draft of his aether device, a mishap causing a small explosion that damaged the appendage beyond use. He had a very basic prosthetic for a time, but eventually managed to put together a working mechanical prosthetic. Over the years he's improved upon it in secret, and is rarely seen without gloves in an effort to hide it. It works wonders, but he is still self-conscious about it.
Stephanivien has an obvious rocky relationship with his father but it goes beyond his hopes and dreams clashing with the old ideals of Ishgard. Stephan is also gay, and unfortunately his father both knows and dislikes this fact. Being the oldest, Stephanivien is set to replace his father when he steps down, but in refusing to relent his happiness for the sake of his House he puts the future of House Haillenarte in jeopardy. Stephan has attempted to persuade his father to simply choose another, but it simply 'isn't how Ishgard works' according to his father. For this reason, their relationship is unlikely to be repaired even as Stephan proves himself worthy to own the deed to the Skysteel Manufactory.
Stephanivien still has no wish to lead House Haillenarte and has considered, in the instance someone attempts to force it on him, simply leaving the city as a whole.
My Stephanivien was once friends with Carvallain (@nobilismiles) before his supposed death. He's always been fairly lonely, especially since his friend's disappearance and this is one reason for his sheer excitement to have others talk to him.
