Rating Every Song on Fearless Based on How Gay it is

Hello friends! I still have a few song analyses in the pipeline (and one on Lover the album) but today in honor of Fearless (Taylor’s Edition) being announced and Love Story being released in a few hours I thought I’d do something fun to celebrate!

And you know what? Fuck my usual disclaimer, I am the word of god here. Try and change my mind about any of these. I dare you. (I kid I kid this isn’t that serious and you’re free to disagree <3)

1. Fearless 15/10

Everything about this song is so fucking gay oh my god. This isn’t a fruit, this is a whole ass edible arrangement. As a small rural town Gay (my hometown has a population of less that 4,000 and where I’m living now has a population of 2,500) this uh. Hits.

“And I don't know how it gets better than this/You take my hand and drag me head first, fearless”

Y’ALL

The idea of falling in love with someone who makes you less afraid of your homophobic small town…….it’s getting to me.

“My hands shake, I'm not usually this way but/You pull me in and I'm a little more brave/It's the first kiss, it's flawless, really something/It's fearless”

This is making me emotional, I'll be honest. I see so much of my friends and my experience in high school in this song. 

This quote I found on genius is from when the album was released on BMR’s website.

“When I wrote ‘Fearless,’ I wasn’t dating anyone. I wasn’t even in the beginning stages of dating anybody. I really was all by myself out on tour and I got this idea for a song about the best first date. I think sometimes when you’re writing love songs, you don’t write them about what you’re going through at the moment, you write about what you wish you had. So, this song is about the best first date I haven’t had yet.”

This just screams baby Tay writing gay folklore to me, about the gay stories she wish she had. Notice how there are no pronouns in this song??? Fruity I’m telling you.

All that to say. I’m crying because the linear note says “I loved you before I met you” and I want to go listen to Long Story Short and cry now.

2. Fifteen 1/10

Objectively pretty straight as she’s singing about her and Abigail’s dating boys in HS. And Taylor got with a senior guy. Good for her I suppose.

Unless he was one of the shitty ones in which case.

“This is life before you know who you're gonna be”

This however, is a cute line and the whole song makes me warm and nostalgic. You can also hear her crying after the line “and Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind” which makes me emo and I’m sure will take on new depth after Abigail’s divorce and hurt me even more.

Other highlights that make me sob include.

“When all you wanted was to be wanted/Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now/Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday/But I realized some bigger dreams of mine”

Bigger dreams of hers indeed :’)

(Also how can you say she’s a gold star lesbian when this song exists. She was obviously dating boys in high school and even if you think she’s a lesbian. Comp het is a hell of a drug kids.)

3. Love Story 8/10

Tried to change the ending indeed.

This is THE Taylor Swift song, and maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but damn I still love it. Written because she wanted to change the ending of Romeo and Juliet (how anyone likes RandJ enough to want to rewrite I have no clue.) and/or because her parents didn’t approve of a guy she was seeing. (according to genius, it would’ve been too early for Joe J so it could possibly be Boys Like Girls frontman, his image did clash with hers and they did release some cute songs together. However if you want my take it’s probably folklore about Emily, take for what you will)

This song has very oft gay vibes with the ‘They don’t approve of our love angle!’ but uses male pronouns so points redacted for that. HOWEVER this is a very early use of ~the male perspective~ in Taylor’s songs and for that it deserves all the love.

“ So I sneak out to the garden to see you/We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew/So close your eyes/Escape this town for a little while”

More rural town angst!!!

Nothing gets me more than rural town angst.

“Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel/This love is difficult, but it's real”

Originally the lyric was “this love is different”. Granted I do not remember the source, i’s just lore implanted into my brain, but make of that what you will.

“"Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone/I love you, and that's all I really know/I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress/It's a love story, baby, just say "Yes"”

Marry me Juliet from the male perspective :)

Also worth noting. This is Karlie’s (and Kim K’s lmao) favorite Taylor song which. While basic as hell. Makes this cover sad as hell to this former Kaylor. (thanks @swiftgron-get-married for the tears <3)

Also not to make this about a man AGAIN but the secret message is “Some day I’ll find this” AND SHE DID IM CRYING.

4. Hey Stephen 1/10

The one thing Camilla Cabello and I have in common is loving this song, so I have to live with that for the rest of my life.

This song is very painfully straight.

How can you think this woman is a gold star lesbian.

The only noteworthy thing is that this is one of the few songs she confirms who it’s about. The secret message is “Love and Theft” which is the name of a country music duo who went on to open her Fearless tour. Which, does make me side eye this song a little bit.

Still a cute song.

“Hey Stephen, boy, you might have me believing/I don't always have to be alone”

5. White Horse 1/10

Oh look. It’s track five. 

You know maybe this is just me being a bitch but in my ranking of track fives this is. Pretty low. Maybe on the bottom.

Like I don’t have a lot to say about it. 

She’s going through it over a guy. He was a cheating dickweazel. 

“'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale/I'm gonna find someone someday/Who might actually treat me well”

“Try and catch me now, oh/It's too late/To catch me now”

These lines hit though!!

And she found Joe!! Who treats her well!!!! And she isn’t the princess, she’s the prince who dropped her sword and knocked on her door!!! But this time if they come for them she’s ready!!!

6. You Belong With Me 5/10

Ah yes. The other THE Taylor Swift song.

You know. If I went to a high school with a cheerleading squad. And I had a crush on a cheerleader. I would blast this song. So for that it gets a 5/10. Otherwise. Fairly straight and fairly iconic.

7. Breathe 8/10

Well. We know this one is about a woman. (Emily Poe for those not in the know. Ha. A rhyme!) That alone has an 8/10. And it’s the first time she has a featured artist so bonus points for that!

It was nominated for a Grammy and it fucking lost to Jason Mraz. When’s the last time you thought about Jason Mraz.

I will not have Kaylor feels on a fucking Fearless song but damn is it VERY easy.

“Never a clean break, no one here to save me/You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand”

“It's 2 A.M, feeling like I just lost a friend/Hope you know it's not easy, easy for me”

Also this bridge? Goes off. HIGHLY underrated. 

8. Tell Me Why 3/10

You know. Maybe this album isn’t as gay as I once thought.

This song does bop though, not as good as her other angry songs on this album. But I can vibe with this you know. Why are you being an asshole mysterious man.

“You could write a book on how to ruin someone's perfect day”

This has to be one of baby Tay’s best burns. Damn. 

“Why do you have to make me feel small/So you can feel whole inside?/Why do you have to put down my dreams/So you're the only thing on my mind?”

Men ain’t shit kids. However, bonus points for the shade. 

9. You’re not Sorry 1/10

Ok, ok. Maybe this was a foolish endeavor.

Because yet again we have a very straight song. A good song. That was on Taylor’s episode of CSI. But oh dear. Very straight. Gets a measly one point. We started this post off so very very gay but damn. We seem to be nearing the end on a very straight note.

10. The Way I Loved You 20/10

Hey Remember what I said about this album being very straight.

WELL THAT WAS A LIE.

Is this a comphet album or am I projecting.

This is one of my favorite baby gay Taylor songs. Her masterful use of pronouns (he is sensible! And so incredible! And all my single friends are jealous! But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain, when it was two am and I was cursing your name!) makes the other person she’s singing about completely vague, while we know she isn’t happy with whichever guy she’s dating.

Mayhaps an early reaction to PRomances?

Either way this song is so good, truly an underrated gay gem I mean. Look at it.

AND THE BRIDGE. Do all of her gay songs just have kickass bridges?

Also please watch the live performance of it from the Fearless tour. It’s such a damn shame this got cut from the movie and some woman in the front row is wearing a cowboy hat. Everyone is holding up those cameras everyone had to have before smartphones. Taylor is being endearing. It’s a good time.

11. Forever and Always 6/10

Bonus points for the ~drama~ of it all. Added last minute to the album? The iconic throwing of the chair in live performances?? All of it very dramatique and for that we stan.

Still pretty straight.

Also Joe Jonas responded to the song and why do I find his response so damn funny. “It’s part of being a musician, I guess. You write songs about each other.”

This is another song where the idea of Taylor’s grown up vocals on this is………..whew

12. The Best Day 0/10

This gets zero points because it’s about her literal mom.

Still makes me cry.

13. Change 13/10

We start the official tracklist with a gay song. We end it with a gay song.

We will ignore that it was originally written for Scott and BMR and instead induct it into the hall of gay pride anthems, as it should be.

Gah, maybe I’m ~projecting~ but this sweet ass song always gets me and is EASILY in my top five Taylor songs. Super underrated and hecking cute.

Berry’s Little Secret

Blue, or Blueberry as he was nicknamed because of his color scheme and chub, was quite the fighter. When Blue skipped, yes he skipped instead of walking or running, onto the battlefield those who did not flee were handed their asses on a shiny silver platter as Blue extended a hand of friendship their way. It got to the point where Underswap was protected by Blue and Blue alone, people knowing how fiercely he protected people he didn't know, trembled at the thought of hurting someone he knew and cared for.

Error, the World Destroyer, respected the blue Sans. No one knew what happened, but during the period of time in which Blue was held hostage by Error, the Destroyer had gained a great level of respect for him, even letting him go and giving him a non-poisoned chocolate bar. Neither spoke of how this occurred, but the destruction of AUs slowed, but didn’t stop, and chocolate was plentiful in Underswap.

Despite his reputation, there was one skeleton considered his equal, Dust. Not as powerful, but his lack of control made the two evenly matched, and he was more violent, contrasting with Blue’s skill. The strangest thing was the sexual tension they had between them. Dust flirting with Blue and Blue flirting back, Dust drooling when Blue spun during his flips, and Blue often staring at the curves Dust had when the mad skeleton summoned ecto during their battles to tease his opponent.

“I swear Blue, are you sure you guys aren’t dating?” Ink joked after the artist once again drank himself sillier than he usually acted.

“As if I’d date a crazy murderer!” Blue said, crossing his arms and huffing.

“Then why do you flirt back? And we all have caught you staring.” Dream said, cleaning up the bottles of booze Ink had emptied while Dream and Blue were out on patrol.

“I decided to flirt back to mess with him. And I can acknowledge when a person is attractive, looking doesn’t mean I have a crush. I’ve told you two this hundreds of times.” Blue said, sighing. “I’m off to bed.” Blue said, walking off.

“See Dream, you *hic* scared ‘im off.” Ink said, blacking out.

“And I see you need to sleep. I don’t even know how you got so much alcohol.” Dream said, picking up Ink.

“Creativity!” Ink shouted as Dream teleported to Ink’s room and threw him on the bed.

Ink’s room was big, it had a king-sized bed in the center and paintings all over the walls, there were also sewing projects on the floor, a hot glue gun stuck to the wall, and a flute stuck in a flower pot. The floor was a fluffy carpet stained with paints of all types and the walls were rainbows.

“Goodnight.” Dream said as Ink passed out on the poorly made and horribly stained bed.

Dream headed off to his room, which had pale yellow walls and wooden floors. A large window taking up almost an entire wall was across from the door. His bed was white with fluffy blankets and a dresser in the corner with a small mirror on top.

“Why me?” He asked himself as he changed into pajamas and laid on the bed, snuggling into the blankets as he fell asleep.

Blue waited until midnight, making sure everyone was asleep. He packed a suitcase with many pairs of clothes, toiletries, and electronics. His room was small with baby blue walls and a white carpet with a small bed that had a few sheets and a fluffy pillow. Blue was nervous, he did this stunt weekly, but he was still nervous about being caught.

He sent a text and a portal appeared before him. It led to Nightmare’s hideout, which was a small cottage in a small corner of dark woods. It was very crowded, but it had a soul unlike the large castle Blue generally lived in when he was busy with the Star Sanses, which his AU was thankfully oblivious of.

“Dad!” A small voice cried out and Blue was embraced by his son, Sprinkle. They had a dark blue hoodie with a purple hood, a purple bandanna, cyan shorts with purple stars and had one blue eye with a yellow pupil and the other blue eye had a red pupil.

“Hello Sprinkle. How are you?” Blue asked as he entered the cottage and was greeted by the Dark Sanses.

“Hello there my beautiful husband~. How are you?” Dust asked as he kissed Blue on the forehead.

“Awesome.” Blue said as he sat down on the couch and removed his gloves.

His hands were scarred, held together by bandages, and a ring with an amethyst gem and silver band rested on his ring finger.

“Will you tell us how you hurt your hands?” Cross asked, and Blue shook his head. “Fine.” Cross said and went to the kitchen to get a chocolate bar.

Nightmare came in the room and glanced at Blue. “Welcome.” He said before walking away.

“He still doesn’t like you.” Sprinkle said as he climbed onto his dad’s lap.

“Can’t expect everyone to.” Blue said as he held his son in his arms. “Guess what?” Blue asked and Sprinkle blinked.

“What?” He asked, bouncing a little bit in anticipation.

“I’m staying for a whole week!” Blue said as he grabbed his kid and threw them in the air before catching them.

“Yay!” Sprinkle said as he embraced his dad.

“A week?” Killer said, and Blue nodded.

“I really wanted to hang out with Sprinkle, since based on Papy’s notes we might be in for a genocide or two.” Blue said and everyone shrugged, accepting Blue’s lie with ease.

“Let’s go set up your room.” Dust said, and Sprinkle followed his parents to the guest room and they shut the door.

“Why are you really here?” Dust asked and Blue sighed.

“Is Nightmare planning something?” Blue asked, and Sprinkle sat on the bed.

“Always scheming aren’t you?” Dust said, growling and Blue rolled his eyes.

“I want to keep as many people safe as I can. And I know Nightmare is planning something big, I just need to figure out what.” Blue said. “We both know Nightmare is planning on breaking the agreement. It’s only a matter of time.” Blue said, unpacking a few items, but keeping most of his stuff in the suitcase.

“Yes I know, he’s been looking at Sprinkle and making threatening gestures his way.” Dust said.

“And you haven’t planned to run away have you? Too afraid to take your child’s life into your own hands?!” Blue said, snarling as Dust rolled his eyes.

“Mom, Dad...?” Sprinkle said, and the two looked at him. “Can we pretend to be a normal family for this week? I know you two have your rivalry, but can we...” Sprinkle said and the two skeletons ran up to him.

“I’m so sorry, we can have some fun with each other, and if we play our cards right, we can get you and your mother out of this.” Blue said and Dust sighed.

“To keep you safe, yeah. You’re pushing me to redemption, you little bugger.” Dust said as he noogied his child.

“I got it from Dad!” Sprinkle said and Blue giggled.

“Naturally.” Blue said, smiling.

“I know you only got into this situation to keep me safe, but I do hope we can make it out of this in one piece.” Sprinkle said.

“I do too.” Blue said and Dust nodded.

A knock on the door startled them, and Cross peaked his head in, a chocolate bar sticking out of his mouth. He took it out when he saw that he had the trio’s attention. “Lunch.” Cross said and stuck the candy in his mouth before closing the door.

“It’s midnight in the base. But a midnight snack never hurt anybody.” Blue said, and Dust howled with laughter.

“Yeah. ‘Got to sleep! We can have breakfast in the morning!’ what changed your mind?” Dust asked as he grabbed the top of the back of Blue’s pants.

Blushing like the fruit he is named after Blue smacked Dust right across the face. “Since I started this gig up, and staying with you my sleeping and eating schedule has been a mess. Even more so since most AUs have their own separate clock.” Blue said, readjusting his pants from the intrusion.

“Fine. Just don’t tell anyone you said that.” Dust said and Sprinkle got off the bed.

“Are we going to be ok?” Sprinkle asked, and Blue smiled.

“You’re going to be just fine.” Blue said, and Sprinkle noticed how Blue didn’t guarantee himself and Dust being ok.

The table was set up with salads and a variety of fruits. Most of it being grown at or near the cottage. Blue was a little upset he couldn’t make tacos, but he could deal with it. Maybe eating edible food would help him think.

“Glad you like this. We’ve been trying to grow our own food for ages, it’ll keep us healthy and whatnot.” Killer said as he chomped on a carrot.

“Or maybe it’ll help you avoid social interaction besides each other.” Blue said and everyone laughed.

“Where’s Nightmare?” Sprinkle said, holding onto Blue’s leg tightly.

“He said to bring him some food, apparently he has a big project going on and doesn’t want to stop working on it.” Horror said, popping out from behind the door to the kitchen.

“Thanks Horror.” Blue said, smiling as he ate some of the juicy fruit.

Sprinkle clung to Blue as the Dark Sanses ate their food, and he saw Dust keeping an eye on him the whole time.

“You’re kid is cute. Maybe he can finally open up to us.” Cross said as he pat Sprinkle on the head, making the kid flinch, and Blue and Dust growled.

“Ok. Fine.” Cross said, raising his hands in surrender.

Blue and Dust lead Sprinkle to the couch, keeping him between the two and Dust tracking the locations of everyone in the room. It was silent as everyone ate, the clock ticking as the seconds went by, and the clouds covering the sun as the wind beat against the stone walls of the quaint cottage.

Footsteps were heard coming from upstairs, Dust held his child close as Nightmare showed himself. “Hello, Blue. I want to see you.” Nightmare said and Blue got up, kissing Sprinkle on his head as he followed his best friend’s arch enemy.

The upstairs was dark and dusty. Cobwebs littering the corners and the windows were blacked out. Mirrors lined the dark hallway as Blue followed Nightmare, he led his spy to a room at the end of the hall.

“How are you?” Nightmare asked, sitting at a desk when Blue closed the door.

“I’m good.” Blue said as he sat in a chair in front of Nightmare.

The room was dark, candles lined the walls, but Blue could only see Nightmare’s glowing eye and outlines of bookshelves on the walls.

“That’s nice. How is my brother?” Nightmare asked, smiling.

“He’s good. Though a little overwhelmed from Ink’s drinking habits worsening.” Blue said, unwavering in his eye contact with Nightmare.

“You did good. I would have never thought getting Ink addicted to alcohol.” Nightmare said.

“Forgive me but he is not addicted. He often goes days without drinking, but when he does, it makes up for it.” Blue said and Nightmare scoffed.

“Still, thank you. Any idea when it would be opportune to strike?” Nightmare asked, tilting his head.

“When I leave. Dream will be tired and Ink will have a hangover. It is also the day I am to return to Underswap. Attacking a well known AU around that time, I suggest StorySwap, would be best for you. Unless you have other plans?” Blue said, wringing his hands under the table and out of Nightmare’s field of vision.

“That is absolutely perfect. I was planning on attacking that area anyway.” Nightmare said. “Now for my favorite part, got any drama?” The King of all Evil asked.

“Red is planning on asking me out, Lust is flirting with Reaper and Geno is most likely going to murder Lust for flirting with his fiance.” Blue said, and Nightmare appeared to lick his non-existent lips.

“That sounds delicious. I can’t wait to eat those emotions up.” Nightmare said as he hummed in delight.

“Am I excused?” Blue said and Nightmare nodded.

“You can go back to your husband.” Nightmare said, picking Blue up with tentacles and placing him on the other side of the door he opened with another tentacle.

“Thank you.” Blue said as he walked to the stairs.

David blinked, staring at his phone. Max wrote to him, the very next day after meeting at Gwen’s!

He felt a flutter of happiness sparkling in his chest as he answered and the pocketed his phone, so the kids in his class wouldn’t get a glimpse of the foul language.

Through the day they exchanged few more messages. David scolded Max for writing during classes, but to be honest he was kinda… happy Max wrote to him.

It felt like some part of their friendship was back.

David was still kinda stressed. There was this something thumping at the back of his head whenever he opened Max’s messages and he hoped it would disappear with time.

Though there were times where his mind still couldn’t comprehend what had happened.

The first time David saw Max picking up Little Star after that night, he was kinda nervous, but the meeting went smoothly. However David kinda could feel the tension in the air.

But they talked and this was what mattered.

And like that passed two weeks, with the tightness in David’s throat getting smaller and smaller with every short meeting and another message on his phone.

It felt amazing, Max concluded, to be able to write once again with David. Nikki immediately noticed his better mood.

Max still felt guilty, of course, but mostly he was happy.

Though he would deny feeling it, if someone asked him! Fucking no, nu-huh!

Nikki was still teasing him, like fricking a lot! Everything started to move to its rightful place. Well, almost everything.

David didn’t ask him to come over to his house. And well, Max couldn’t really blame him? Because the last time Max had been there he had had the best night of his life. But it hadn’t been the best night of David’s life. And he probably regretted it on so many levels.

(It hurt him, but he couldn’t really blame David)

Talking with David via messages on phone was fine. Seeing him for few short minutes during the week was fine.

(No, it wasn’t, but he couldn’t really do much about it.)

So like that passed two weeks, then another one. The weekend rolled and Max found out that he was out of food. What the fuck!?! He had bought a lot of it few days ago!

(But yeah, one night Nikki had eaten everything from his fridge)

So this was how Max found himself – outside the store with at least five bags and a fucking storm roaming around.

Fuck. And he didn’t have an umbrella! But maybe if he could run…

- thunder cracked dangerously close –

…No can do.

So Max stood there, outside the supermarket and damn! his hands started to hurt. Plus his meat! He needed to put it in a fridge (it was on a promotion, so Max doubted it could live long outside of a fridge)

What to do? Maybe he should call a taxi? But ugh… the money. Plus –

He took out his phone. Yep, it was dead. Great…

This wasn’t his day, fuck –

“Max?”

Max blinked and turned his head.

Shit, it was David, standing there, and Max’s heart leaped so high into his throat that it was almost painful.

“Oh…” Max said, and fuck he wasn’t sure how he managed to sound deadpanned, but he somehow did it. “Hey David.”

“What are you doing here?” David asked, stepping closer to him. He himself had few bags in his hands.

“Shopping, duh?” Max answered, trying to sound casual and as Max as he could, but damn, he was nervous.

David blinked, but instead of getting offended by his tone, he chuckled softly.

Damn, fuck his heart, fuck everything.

“I meant here, outside.”

Ohhhh… damn.

“It’s raining like batshit fucking crazy and I don’t have an umbrella. Plus I kinda don’t want to be killed by a thunder.” And just like on cue another lightning struck through the dark, gray sky and the sound made even David flinch. “Yeah, that.”

“Oh.” David mumbled, looking past Max’s shoulder at the rain cutting through the air with a strict precision.

They stood there for few minutes, staring at the heavily drizzling water pouring from the sky. Max moved his weight from one leg to another, to move it back few seconds later. He could see David stealing glance after glance at him, few times opening his mouth, but still with no words coming out.

Just say what you want to say!

It took David another minute or so, before he opened his mouth:

“Do you want to go to my house?” David asked, slowly, hesitantly, unsure and there was something at the end of this sentence that made Max flinch. Some particle of fear.

However Max turned to David with wide eyes and hope blooming in his chest and found himself asking:

“Are you sure?”

There was an unspoken question, a hidden agreement, a covered understanding of the situation.

David stared at him and Max could almost see hundred or thousand of different thoughts flying through his mind.

It felt like eternities passed before Max heard a reply.

“Yeah.”

Max glanced at the rain.

“We need to run to get there. You are aware of that?”

“Yes, but it’s better to run for five minutes, than stand here for God knows how long.” David added with a smile. “Plus it’s starting to get cold.”

“That is true.” Max said, feeling his fingers getting quite chilly.

There was another beat of silence. Max opened his mouth, feeling the eagerness seeping into his voice.

“So we’re running?”

“Yeah.” David answered breathlessly.

And so they jumped out from under the roof of the supermarket and ran to David’s house.

Max would deny it till the end of his life, but he could feel himself smiling, especially as he heard David giggling behind him. That slow poke.

Even though they maybe ran for four or so minutes, when they reached David’s house they were still soaked.

Max was still kinda stressed when David was taking out the keys to put them in a lock. Thousands of memories were running through his mind, but he tried to push them all back and down.

“Put your things in the fridge if you want. I’ll be right back.” David said, after he took off his shoes, and glanced at him.

Yet there was some strained tone at the end of this sentence and some robotic rhythm to David’s steps as he moved to his own room.

Max put few ingredients in the fridge and then waited for David in the kitchen, taking a first good look at the apartment after what had happened between them. It looked the same – he remembered every book on the shelf, every plant, every stain on the couch – and yet Max felt like he was staring at it for the very first time.

“Here.” David said and then threw something on his head, blocking his sight. “Dry your hair so you won’t catch a cold.”

Oh a towel.

David himself had a fluffy white towel on his hair.

Max started to brush his hair with the towel, observing David from between his wet locks as he moved around the kitchen, busying himself with hiding food in the fridge and cupboards. His movements still weren’t relaxed, there was some hidden tension, some stress pulling strings inside his body, a lagging program directing his movements.

Max couldn’t really blame him, but some part of him was deeply hurt.

Ten minutes later the rain was still pouring heavily outside. David was about to put the eggs away, but he glanced at the window and bit his bottom lip.

“Do you want to stay for dinner?”

Max turned around, from his position near the sink, to stare at David who was in front of the opened fridge. He played with the box of eggs, tilting it and then twirling around.

(He was selfish)

“It depends on what you’re making.”

David glanced at the eggs and then at the fridge, only to finally turn to Max.

“Spaghetti Carbonara?”

Max shrugged.

“Sounds edible enough.”

At that David chuckled softly under his nose and put the eggs on the counter.

After that they worked mostly in silence. The radio in David’s kitchen accompanied them with a soft tune of old songs. After some time David started to hum the lyrics or the rhythm. It was awkward at first, with the tense atmosphere, but it was dissolving slowly, step after step, diluting the thickness around them.

They started even a small conversation.

When they finished making food, they sat in the living room on two different couches with the turned on TV and plates on their laps. Just like they had used to. They ate while watching some random movie – with the rain outside turning into a drizzle, only to finally stop pouring altogether.

When they finished eating, Max washed the dishes, glancing at the window and David few times.

“I should be going.”

“Already?” David asked, looking up from his place on the couch.

“Yeah.”

David clearly wasn’t one hundred percent comfortable around Max, and he didn’t want David to feel like an outcast in his own home, so he decided to return to the dorm. He was just happy David asked him over in the first place.

Max packed his things from the fridge and then moved to the door.

“Will you message me after returning to your room?”

It was dark outside, but it wasn’t even nearly late.

“Sure.” Max said, putting on his scarf and grabbing his groceries. “Take care.”

“You too.”

And with that Max went out.

He messaged David when he returned to the dorm, because when he had forgot to do it last time, David had sent him like five messages later. Plus Max didn’t want to worry him.

David was kinda glad Max went out, but he was also like fricking sad by it and he wasn’t sure how to deal with two so different emotions. He wasn’t as comfortable around Max as he used to – which was dumb, because he knew Max wouldn’t simply jump on him. Though he couldn’t stop the stress from forming in his stomach.

But David was also sad, because he hated spending time alone. The house was too empty with only him inside, too lonely, too hollow – even with the radio always turned on and plants or flowers put in every possible place.

Gladly soon after his phone pipped up happily and David quickly grabbed it, mouth twitching into a soft smile after seeing that Max got safely to his dorm.

So time slowly moved forward, with the invisible, awkward atmosphere around them dissipating slowly.

Two weeks later, he made quite too big dinner (but come on, he had to use those tomatoes, other way they would turn bad) and even though he was still kinda nervous about all of that had happened, he messaged Max if he wanted to come over to eat.

Max answered few minutes later, asking if he could bring Nikki over. That idea was a little soothing.

They came over not even fifteen minutes later, with Nikki busting into his house like she owned this place.

“David, my man, free food! Sign me the fuck up!” She shouted, kicking her shoes, not even sparing a glance where they were landing.

David chuckled at that, especially as the girl was already next to him, trying to eat the meat from the pot and he had to swat her hand away.

“Ah ah! Few more minutes!”

So Nikki and Max sat at the table and started chatting about their Uni life, telling David bizarre stories from their dorm. Some of them were funny and some utterly terrifying. David loved every one of them.

And oh, his house felt so much better with someone inside.

Soon after they were eating the food and enjoying a simple evening.

But Nikki wouldn’t be Nikki, if she didn’t ask if David had alcohol. At that David twitched, even though he didn’t want to, with eyes flickering to Max for a brief second.

It was okay, it was okay, it was okay…

“No, Nikki, I’m sorry…” David said, with an apologetic smile on his lips. “Gwen is usually the one with alcohol in her house.”

“Shame.” Nikki said, laying down on the table. “Next time we’re going to Gwen for free food, Max.”

“Why the fuck would I go to Gwen’s house again?”

“For free food! And alcohol!”

Max groaned and then glanced at David, like he was searching for help, but David could only chuckle in reply and shrug.

In the end David enjoyed the evening and soon after he even forgot all about feeling uncomfortable.

Heh, maybe the situation between him and Max wasn’t the worst.

“Nik, this is literally the worst…”

“What is the worst?” Nikki asked, popping a giant bubble from a bubblegum and almost getting it all over her face.

“David is the worst…” Max grumbled.

“David? I think he is cool! He gave us free food! Like in free and in food, two best things in life!”

“I know… and that’s why he is the worst…”

“Because he did something nice?”

“He is always doing something nice!” Max slapped his hand over his face and dragged it down. “Even after I acted like a fucktard.”

“Hmm fucktard is a pretty fitting word here.” Nikki stated, grinning like crazy and blowing another bubble.

Even though Nikki was kinda or totally right, Max still popped her bubblegum balloon.

“Hey, rude!” Nikki yelped and then slowly started to get rid of the pink gum in her hair. “I mean, he is definitely trying to get your friendship back, that is for sure. Which I think is really nice.”

“That is the problem!”

“Erm David being nice is a problem now? I’m confused!”

“Yes!” Max threw his hands in the air. “Because by him being nice I feel like I l…” Oh, he bit his lip in time.

“Like you like him more and more?” Nikki added, grinning from ear to ear.

Max flushed bright red and turned his head away.

There were few minutes filled with silence as they moved slowly through the quiet and almost empty city.

“I know he is trying hard to get… whatever friendship we had…” Max mumbled, feeling his chest constricting with every word leaving his lips. “But I don’t want that…”

He thought he did, he thought. But he was wrong. So, so very wrong.

“I don’t wanna be friends. I want…” Max took deep breath, combing his hand through his black, curly locks. “I want to be something… more?”

Nikki blew another giant bubble and then asked:

“Does David even know what you feel towards him?”

“No, I don’t… think so…”

Nikki hummed loudly, smacking her lips.

“Well… maybe it’s not the worst situation right now.”

Max glanced at her, kinda perplexed.

“I mean, if he knew, he could get… scared after you two fucked.” Max flinched internally, but there was some kind of a thread of truth intertwining with Nikki’s words. “But he doesn’t know that, so maybe not all hope is lost?” Nikki then ruffled her hair. “I don’t think I make much sense, but well, have you considered trying to be something more now? Like I dunno, I know being nice isn’t your best trait, but maybe do that but like more?” She then huffed and let her hand drop. “Do you even get what I want to say?”

“I think I got the gist of it.” Max murmured, even though he wasn’t sure really.

“It’s just… I’ve seen you dealing with this for few years by now. If you don’t do something, nothing will change.”

There were few steps filled with silence, until Max slowly opened his mouth.

“What if this doesn’t work?” He licked his lips. “What if David doesn’t… like me back, even though I will try?”

“Well, you definitely won’t know until you try.” Nikki shrugged. “But hey, if something like this happens… it’s still a problem for future you, so why should you worry about it now?”

Indeed, why?

Until they reached the dorm they didn’t move this topic anymore. They said their goodbyes and moved to their separate rooms.

Later Max laid down in his bed for few more minutes, maybe even full hour, staring at the ceiling and thinking about what Nikki had told him. Because she was right. He never had done anything with his crush – he just had left it there and had hoped it would disappear. But it hadn’t disappeared. It simply had grown and transformed into something that wasn’t a childish crush anymore.

And it gnawed at Max, it nibbled at his consciousness, because damn he had enough. He had enough of wanting to do something and not being able to. It didn’t have to be anything sexual, fuck, it was even pretty low on the list of things he wanted. He wanted this normalness that came with being with someone – being able to hold their hand, feeling them smiling at you, feeling the warmness spreading over your heart whenever they would peck your cheek.

Feeling that you were alive and loved.

(God, he sounded cheesy!)

But he never had done anything with it. He just had swept his feelings under a carpet and had ignored them, hoping that they would disappear. But they hadn’t and he was tired of pretending they weren’t there.

These few weeks without David – without his cheesy and warm messages, without him hanging with Max, doing nothing and talking about everything and nothing at all in the same time – were terrible and… damn…

He had to do something, because fuck… he wanted this.

Because Nikki was right – doing nothing won’t change a thing.

So Max grabbed his phone, brushed his finger on the screen and clicked David’s name in the contact list.

On either side looks to be a stone crypt with a dark, open doorway, and iron-wrought fence with spikes along the top. Past the fence looks to be a grassy graveyard, on both sides. In the very center, a black statue, this one looking skeletal, but the bones are a big mangled looking and the face looks like a dog's skull. -- -- a very big dog skull

-- -- the wider hall, which is wide enough for six people or so to walk down it side-by-side, goes on for a ways. Its mostly dark, but likewise has some torches lining the path. At the far end of it, you come to a smallish chamber with a pedestal in the center. On top of it is a gleaming object.

Lavi: Do you smell anything around here? Wood, maybe? I'd feel better if you had a stick again.

-- -- in the street are a few smaller buildings on all sides. The street gets a bit wider after going around them. To each side, the streets bend around until you can't see down them and they disappear. Ahead is a zigzagging path up some cliffs to what looks like a Keep above.
