you'd think the long boring passages of moby dick would be long boring and beautiful and sometimes they are but often they are just Long And Boring
#theres like an entire chapter about ishmel talking about the color white and it's basically just a list of white things#and im like god i actually found the ascientific whale taxonomy more interesting#and there are long passages about nothing in stuff like beowulf and illiad but those are due to oral tradition this is because fuck idk#theres a reason this great american novel didn't do well for several decades#a lot of its charm comes from how antiquated it is? ofcourse it was doomed to fail as modern work but 50-150+ years later its a period piece#long rambles of daily life are so boring but if you add time it becomes a window into the past#and the audience can compare and contrast with 'the past'#how relatable is ishmel unlearning internalized racism? how incorrect is ishmel whale taxonomy? how does ishmel allude The Classics#these wouldn't be Fun Literary Discussion Questions in 1851#me in highschool: fuck writing essays#me as an adult: fuck writing essays but tag rambling is fun
