Favourite games of 2016
So now that 2016 is over here’s a list of my favourite games of 2016.
Pokemon Go- While the game itself isn’t much different to other AR games, with location based spawning. The pokemon theme suits it really well and the surge of popularity it had goes to show that everyone wanna be the very best like no one ever was.
Slayer Shock- A Buffy themed rogue like, it really took me by surprise, splitting time between a coffee shop where the not scooby gang hang out and nightly vampire slaying missions building to a face off with the big bad. There’s a fair share of buffy references thrown in which all added together to make the game a shocking surprise this year.
Dishonored 2- It’s more of the original dishonored’s steampunky stealthy action. In a new setting and i really like the development from silent protagonists to voiced, especially as it is one of the new examples of the kids of sad murder dads taking up arms and becoming protagonists in the sequel.
Darkest Dungeon- While the game launched in early access during 2015 it’s full release was in 2016 playing the heir of an ever present narrator building a ruined hamlet up into a creepy adventuring hub as groups of adventurers face their inner demons as well as the monstrous enemies of the dungeons.
Overwatch- One of my favourite multiplayer shooters in recent recent years, while the lootboxes system is utterly frustrating and the game modes are rather limited the gameplay and the colourful cast of characters make up for it.
Doom-  RIP AND TEAR, RIP AND TEAR! Shooting and tearing through the demonic legions of hell is great, the action is fast paced and blood covered fun, i’m really enjoying the recent classic shooter revival and really look forward to it continuing.
Dark Souls 3- The original dark souls is one of my favourite games. So taking the gameplay and putting it in a setting which has satisfying fan service moments including locations equipment and characters while also existing independantly and having a nice variety of easier and harder boss fights making it an excellent (potential) finale to the Dark Souls world.
Tyranny- After Pillars of Eternity ended up being one of my favourite games last year, it’s not really a surprise Tyranny is one of my favourites, it’s yet another Obsidian game i adore. Im world based on classical antiquity bronze age into the iron age you start as one of the big bad’s minions but during the game you have the choice- follow their instructions in a number of ways, join the rebels or decide now is your chance to take over the world
Banner Saga 2- Vikings have been an important positive for me in 2016 and will hopefully continue into 2017 with the Jorvik viking centre reopening. So a pair of games about a caravan of fantasy Don Bluth Vikings trying to survive post ragnarok. While some of the combat encounters ended up being frustrating due to enemy turn order allowing massive damage with little chance of surviving it (a problem i have with many turn based strategy games) it not only has one of my favourite justifications for ‘horny vikings’ with the giants having horns growing from their heads, and the story of coping with the loss of a loved one while being given their responsibilities was a really interesting one.
Total War- Warhammer- This is a game i’ve wanted to see ever since Warhammer mark of Chaos, while i am waiting for February and the proper release of my favourite faction, the knights of Bretonnia, seeing the total war formula of having a turn based map of the different kingdoms with real time large scale battles applied to a fantasy setting by creative assembly itself is brilliant. Though there has been some great conversions made by modders for previous Total War games as well as the excellent King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame before now, so i can’t wait to see the future factions coming to the game but also what other games do using the total war model.
