i think for the future should've dedicated more to gus and hunter instead of h/untlow.
for one, besides luz, hunter shows more vulnerability around gus, not willow. hunter and willow barely have good moments alone, and i'm not necessarily talking about romance here (although i agree that them being a romantic pair is essentially what made them so shallow). the thing that apparently has them bond is them being "half a witch", except hunter has never been called that anywhere else in the show. their traumas are also not the same. honestly, reading it like this, it feels like hunter and willow have literally nothing in common, while he has better arcs with gus and luz, and maybe amity, the last sadly not explored further beyond eclipse lake. hunter and willow's relationship feels extremely superficial in comparison to his other friendships.
secondly and most importantly, gus is the only one - again, besides luz - that knows that hunter is a grimwalker, except gus actually did see belos' memories. he saw caleb dying, he saw belos creating grimwalkers. gus knows a lot more gruesome details than luz does. we should've seen how gus felt seeing all that, because he's still the youngest of the group - remember him literally sobbing when they arrived in the human realm? -, and i know for a fact that a boy as young as himself would be haunted just by looking at hunter after seeing caleb die. multiple times, if he saw the other grimwalkers.
thirdly, willow didn't have a single memorable moment in thanks to them. she's only there to be the supportive friend, she doesn't show any struggle in the entire episode. in contrast, we have enough scenes of gus and hunter bonding, especially through cosmic frontier, which is a way of gus to tell hunter that he's fine with him being a grimwalker.
it frustrates me because gus and hunter's friendship is very well-written imo, but in the end they don't do anything about it. there's no payoff to the build-up, gus' feelings and trauma are never explored, because it's all LITERALLY shoved aside for h/untlow, the most forced cartoon pairing i have ever witnessed in my life. we DESERVED the gus and hunter talk. THEY deserved it, too.
