This is why it’s important to get involved with industry, such as at Manchester Animation Festival, to make contacts and find connections. Without these connections, you’ll have to send cold emails to potential contacts, which are far less likely to be responded to. Something that can help is asking for an interview manifest document, which allows you to know who will be interviewing you. This allows you to discuss their particular industry specialisms. It seemed to be the one that stood out the most, with people saying it drew their attention first. It reminded people of an anime troupe where someone’s glasses gleam when they push them up, posing and framing of these kinds of shots being important. Based on this, they suggested that I could animate the silhouette’s glasses gleaming. When showing my designs to someone else, they recommended that I try animating one, mainly the “CD Productions” one in the middle, maybe making the silhouette morph into the other one. I imagined this one being green initially, although I’m still considering making it black or at least a darker shade of green.

On the side, I’ve begun generating some logo designs for my personal branding, to apply to my work samples to show to industry. I plan to take my favourite logos from this batch and develop them using Photoshop. One theme that seems to consistently crop up in these designs is glasses, which I quite like. I tried mainly experimenting with different font types for my initials, although I could use another moniker to brand myself later. As of now, I’m just testing font designs to possibly match an icon.

Unit 9 - Progression

Uni research

I have looked on https://www.whatuni.com at some uni’s that I want to look into more depth. The ones I came across a while ago were; Chester, Brighton, Bristol, Plymouth college of art. Yes some of them are very far away from home, but theres a reason for that. I am quite independent and I really like exploring city life out of my own area, but also, I think that there will be more photography opportunities up the line and I generally want to experience an environment that is different from where I am now. However, I do want to go on a gap year afterwards and money wise, I may not be able to afford it so I’ve looked at Plymouth college of art and will definitely apply for that one as a backup option, but I will look else where. If I did want to go away from home, then I would need to get a good paid job to help with the financial stuff. My plan is to study a Batchelor of arts (BA Hons) for 3 years.

My overall thoughts are to go to Plymouth college of art because then I could save up more money to go on a gap year and possibly move away afterwards. It would be the best option for me because as much as I really want to go up country and experience what its like in such a different environment, financially it may become a problem in the long run. Even if I do stay local, I will still get a few opportunities up country because of my online work and portfolio and I’ve got an email for business enquiries and a LinkdIn account so there is ways of contact. The important things to think about whilst choosing a uni are travelling distance from home, financial costs for accommodation, life in the environment and so on because its important that you get good use out of the uni for 3 years as well as enjoying the area you’re in.

I have ordered and received some prospectuses so I can have a look at them and make some decisions on what ones I’ll apply for in September. I may also need to consider going to some open days to see the environment for myself and talk to the tutors about the course and what they have to offer. I have ordered a prospectus from Manchester and Plymouth college of art. 

Pros and cons

Pros: Meet new friends from the Uk and around the world, experience, live independently, study in depth a subject of your interest, better qualifications often lead to better jobs and likely employment, degree opens up more choices, many jobs require degrees, graduates generally earn more and have more job satisfaction.

Cons: No guarantee of succeeding in your studies, costly (approx. £9,000 of fees a year and approx. £4,500 living expenses a year) and you will have to pay it back after you graduate, takes about 3/4 years to get a degree, during this time you’re not earning or gaining any experience, not all get well paid jobs, some non-graduates do very well for themselves, not many go onto getting work placements by the end of their studies.

Employment AND internship research

In some places a required assistant photographer to start off with will need skills and knowledge in photography; know how to use a camera, be able to set up studio equipment and have good customer service. Even though a degree is better on your cv, there are still some opportunities for employment, but they require more from you. I did consider this at start because I didn’t want to stay in education for much longer. I looked on indeed.com at photography jobs and they mainly came up with jobs like assistant and studio things, but not anything that I was wowed by and that is probably to do with the fact that the higher jobs require much more experience and a degree of some sort.

Pros and cons of undergraduate employment

Pros: Not costly, some places accept non-graduate, average or below salaries.

Cons: Many jobs require degree, coming from school or college with not that much experience or high standard grades, pay isn’t that great for non-graduate.

On the internet, I have looked at some internships (which are work experience or potential jobs within your country or internationally). It sounds like a thing I could look into more because it’ll build up my experience and also, I will be able to get a bigger market audience for my work as I progress on. If I were to go into doing something like this, I would probably do it after uni and for that to happen, I may have to stay local to manage my money effectively.

As this month comes to an end and I was able to digest my previous month project I can't help but wonder if I will be running into this often? There are so many benefits to this form of evaluation and yet so tedious. 

Inquire-

I do see the benefits behind the portfolio we are creating within the Behance website. The problem is how many people actually are aware of this website? I never heard about it till our previous course and the only reason some people that I know see my work is because I have it linked to me LINKDin profile. 

Suggest-

The only way this Behance portfolio would work at least in my favor is by making sure its linked up with my other social media networks. Which I wish the website was more recognized because its a nice application to work with. 

Elevate-

I will make sure I follow the suggestions by my fellow classmates to make sure I clean up my profile. One of them actually suggested I remove my GAG REAL so that there is more professionalism to my profile. As I went back and took a look at my REEL I felt he was right so I removed it. That is how he has helped me elevate my portfolio.
