‘Wishful Thinking‘
Summary: Every NHL champion gets a single brush with ice magic. When Jack takes his first cup with the Falconers, he accidentally undoes the wish that brought him back from the brink of death in 2009, and Bitty becomes hell-bent on lifting the cup himself for a chance to set things right.
A/N: Finally posting some concepts I’ve played around with that aren’t 100% complete massive fics, but still pretty solid, just little things that might be enjoyed. Yet another cup-wish-gone-wrong-au with monkey-paw components. Also inspired by discord convos about canon!Jack meeting an older, veteran NHL!Bitty and having a lot of feelings. Also mentor/father-in-law!Bob trying to help Bitty navigate the NHL. There’s more to this floating around but this is the meat of it
____________
____________
Bob can sense when it happens. A shift of something monumental that he’s only felt on a handful of occasions his entire life. A quick glance across the ice finds a number of the celebrating Falconers looking around curiously, unsure of the sensation; for so many, it’s their first brush with ice magic. A pleasant novelty. The vets, though, they look to each other.
Bob turns and doesn’t have to look far to find his son, one hand clasped around the cup, the other around Eric Bittle’s waist, smiling from ear to ear. Something about the moment is wrong, but Bob can’t quite determine why as he’s overcome with a wave of nausea. The stadium lights are too bright and he blinks hard, face scrunching, trying to force whatever wrongness he’s feeling out of himself.
Someone’s made a wish.
The moment passes. Bob’s vision clears. There, veiled in a shower of blue and gold confetti, is Eric; alone at center ice, face twisted in confusion as he looks around for the man who only moments earlier had been in his arms.
“You take the cup, you get one real wish,” the decades old, bourbon-lacquered voice of his first coach reminds him. “But only the one. Can be something small, like an empty cab in the rain, or it can be something big. World changing, even. The one thing, the most important thing — ”
“No,” Bob breathes. “Please, no.”
“— You never use your wish on another player.”
____________
____________
____________
They don’t know exactly what Jack wished for, but the next time Bitty’s blades touch the ice, it’s as if he’s stepped into the body of a new man. No more slurs. No more targeted chirps. He’s just one of the boys.
He plays. He wins. Then, the offers start to come.
NHL teams looking for fast wingers, team players, leadership material; not one of them mentions diversity, or Eric’s status as the first out NCAA hockey captain. No one cares. No one remembers Jack, and no one cares about Eric.
The best and worst case scenarios rolled into one. If this is the reality Jack unknowingly traded his existence for, Bitty has no choice but to walk through the door his partner opened.
Bitty swallows, trying to force the words out on one of his now nightly calls with the man who would have been his father-in-law in another world, if the shared connection between them hadn’t been interred in a Montréal cemetery almost a decade prior.
“I think . . . I think he wished for acceptance.”
___________
___________
___________
“No one remembers anymore.”
Eric scuffs his skate against this ice, building up a small pile of shavings before scattering them again, focusing on the soft white as if somehow he’ll be able to transport himself bodily to somewhere cool and quiet. Jackson Hole. Banff. Tremblant. Anywhere but here. Anywhen but now.
“Saw Tater last week at a press junket. Blank stares all around. Some days, most days, I wake up and I don’t know how I got here. I can go without thinking of him.”
Weeks. Eric doesn’t say aloud. Months. Those hideous mornings when he wakes up beside a warm body and forgets they aren’t him. They aren’t supposed to be him. Was there ever even a him.
Jack. Eric mouths silently, just to remind himself. His name is Jack.
The details always slip. The universe constantly trying to correct the fallacy of Eric Bittle remembering a man who died before they technically ever met. Faded photographs and corrupted memory cards. Selfies that used to have two people in frame. Vlog posts with cosmic ADR, swapping Jack’s name for someone else’s like a hastily rewritten script. Eventually, even Eric’s memories turn traitor. First times lost to reshoots and post-production magic. Blue eyes are brown. Black hair is blonde. Jack becomes Phillip. Eric’s first love recast. In desperation, he pulls a page from Memento, finds a tattoo parlor and has ‘Jack Laurent Zimmermann’ inked in dark, unmistakable letters on his inner thigh. Adds a cup, the Falconers’ crest, and the date they lost everything. It works well enough until the name fades; there are still days where a hook up will ask why Eric has a championship tattoo for a team he never played with.
Now, all he has is Bob.
“That’s why I’m here.” Bob reminds. “That’s why we talk.”
“But what happens if we don’t.”
Bob’s familiar assurances rumble through the phone. Constant. Refusing to acknowledge the harsh realities of the passing of time. The ever-present doomsday clock moving them both toward disaster — Bob aging, Eric aging out. He’s good, but he isn’t great, and the only offers coming his way are single-season contracts with teams that haven’t sniffed a championship in years. One day very soon, there will be no more chances for Eric to undo what’s been done. No more favors to ask of teammates that have long since forgotten a world where Jack Zimmermann was a college graduate and a rookie MVP. Not just an addict. Not just dead at nineteen.
Eric listens to Bob ramble, asks him to tell him a story, to tell him about the Jack that Eric never really got to know. The Jack he can barely remember. A man that Eric has dedicated his entire life to honoring, to bringing back — from where he cannot fathom — and Bob obliges in a soft tone Eric imagines is not dissimilar from how he must have spoken to his son as a child.
Eric ignores his teammates rushing around him — tossing chirps and gentle insults about his ‘Sugar Daddy’ — and focuses on the accented voice in his ear; grasping desperately at the memory of a man who doesn’t exist. Pretending. Hoping.
__________
__________
Across the ice, Eric sees Kent Parson watching him. When they lock eyes, the aging star glides toward him, under a guise of one amicable captain greeting another. He’s pushing 37, and while the years of competitive play are starting to show, he’s just as viciously handsome as the day they first met. At least, Eric thinks he is. He can’t imagine a life where Kent Parson strolled onto a college campus and played beer pong at a frat party, but there’s a folder of old photos on Eric’s computer. Jack is in none of them, but there’s one of himself and Kent. Smiling.
Eric can’t recall why the image bothers him so much.
Parson used his wish years ago on something that he’s never bothered to share — and Eric’s far too much a gentleman to ask a man who was once a rival what he wasted his golden ticket on — but now, he’s slowing down, and this is supposed to be his farewell season. Going out with a bang, riding the high of his fifth cup win. He’s worked hard, and he deserves to shove the Penguins back down into obscurity for another season. Deserves it far more than Eric, with his selfish, single-mindedness that’s ruined god knows how many careers in the last decade between his own ruthlessness and Bob’s meddling.
Except. . . this is also likely Eric’s last season. His last chance to undo the great tragedy of his life, and Parson knows it.
“How you feeling, Peaches? You ready?”
Eric hates the nickname in the same way he hates when his father calls him ‘Champ’.
Eric fights his own shame because he wants to be honest, say, ‘No, I’m not ready, I’ll never be ready,’ but Eric can’t ask for what he wants, anymore. He wants the Aces to balk on a power play. He wants Parson to flub a pass and throw the game —  he even knows the man would probably do it, too — but Eric needs to come by a win honestly. They learned the hard way in 2022 when Eric hands were wrapped around the cup, wishing, praying, crying, pleading . . .
Clear eyes, full hearts, or some such bullshit.
Cheaters don’t get wishes.
“I can’t remember, anymore,” Eric admits as they square up across the face-off circle, the resigned terror of an inescapable end creeping upon him like the burn of an old injury ignored for far too long. “Kent. Please.” Parson leans down, rests his stick against the ice, and holds Eric’s gaze as if to say, I’m here. Trust me. Just play.
The puck drops.
________
________
________
There’s someone watching him, young, handsome with dark hair and the kind of bright blue eyes that scream ‘notice me’ with all of the biological bluntness of neon plumage and a mating dance. The man weaves through the crowd, unnoticed by Eric’s teammates, and comes close enough that Eric can’t help but assume familiarity. He must be a fan, the way he’s flushed and excitable.
Eric’s drunk enough on the moment that he’s happy to indulge his baser instincts. He also literally can’t remember the last time he brought company home and if there’s ever been a night to get laid, it’s this one.
“Crisse, look at you, Bits.”
The man is caught between being awestruck and simply struck, reaching out to touch Eric’s arm but not quite making contact, like his depth perception is the tiniest bit off. He drops Eric’s old nickname so easily, so earnestly, that for a moment Eric thinks they might already know each other — but that’s impossible. Eric would remember someone so handsome, so very much his type.
“Only my friends call me ‘Bitty’.” Eric cautions, raising his half-empty champagne bottle in a mock toast and flashing his best ‘you’re coming home with me tonight’ smile. “But I’m more than happy to to get acquainted with you, Sugar.”
Eric isn’t usually this forward, this unrestrained. Tonight, it doesn’t matter, he’s celebrating: another championship, the end of a career, a life well lived. It’s to be expected. What isn’t expected is how the man’s relieved smile falters; as if Eric’s unbridled joy is somehow misplaced.
“Bitty? It’s me.”
“And ‘me’ is called . . . ?”
On very few occasions in Eric’s life has he been able to witness true devastation first-hand; and those instances were related to deaths, hockey losses, or blackout morning afters.
“Jack.” The man says softly, face slack with surprise. “It’s. . . Jack. Bitty, you know me.”
“If we’ve met before, I’m sorry,” Eric apologizes, hating to see the kid look so defeated. “I meet so many people — ”
Over Jack’s shoulder, Eric catches sight of Bob Zimmermann and waves, delighting in the way Bob’s face lights up when he catches sight of Eric, practically going supernova when he notices Jack as well, crossing the ice like a man possessed; Bob moves to pull them both into a hug but Eric’s new friend holds up a defensive hand and Bob stops mid-gesture.
It’s extremely apparent something is off, and between the reporters, the confetti, the champagne, and the fans, Eric is missing all of the context clues.
“Just won my last cup,” Eric singsongs, gesturing with the bottle between his mentor and the man Eric would very much like to fuck — who look very similar now that Eric can see them side by side. “Everyone’s super excited, right? Yeah? So, what’s going on. Did someone die?”
“No.” Bob says quickly, eyes flicking between Jack and Eric warily. “No. Not . . . that.”
“Severely injured?”
“. . . Non.”
“Okay, then, we should be celebrating!” Eric throws his arms wide and nearly clocks a passing teammate. “No more party pooping, Bobbert. Speaking, this is my new friend, Jack. Jack, Bob, Bob, Jack. Though, I’m getting the feeling you two might know each other. Or might be . . . related.” Eric gasps and smacks his free palm against his forehead. “Oh my god, the Tremblant retreat? Is that where I know you from? Listen, I was fucked up on pain meds that whole weekend, I am so sorry if we’ve already met.”
Despite Eric’s continued attempts at clarifying their shared mystery past, Jack keeps looking at Bob with that same wounded expression and it’s really killing Eric’s buzz.
“Bob.” Eric redirects. “Help me, here. Cutie’s nervous.”
“Eric, this is my, ah, well,” Bob’s smile is so forced, so tense, it looks more like a grimace. “Well, this is my son, Jack.”
There is only one ‘Jack’ Eric has ever known in relation to Bob Zimmermann, and he is not someone to be mentioned in polite conversation.
“Your son?” Eric echoes slowly. “Your son, Jack.”
Bob realizes what Eric’s tiptoeing around and casts a furtive glance toward the younger man, lifting two fingers to his cheek conspiratorially to imply ‘it’s a long story, not meant for public ears’. Eric knows how to play along.
“Wow, okay, did not expect that, but now that you’re saying it, I can one-hundred-percent tell. You have the same, well, everything.”
Eric takes Jack’s hand for an obligatory shake, not missing the way Jack’s features twist up into something caught between flattery and misery, before staring down his pseudo-mentor.
“My question is this, where have you’ve been hiding him — because how long have I know you, Bobby? Shame.”
“I’ve been . . . away.”
Jack’s tone is weighted with context Eric absolutely does not possess, but can definitely read into. Given the age difference and Alicia’s conspicuous lack of attendance this evening, Jack’s definitely a love child from some 90s Zimmergroupie. Or, original Jack didn’t actually OD and Bob spirited away his kid to keep away the prying eyes of the public; but that wouldn’t explain the age difference or the shared name.
Oh, Bobbert.
“Couldn’t wheel him out too soon,” Bob jokes, but Eric can tell the man’s heart isn’t in it, reinforcing Eric’s suspicion.
“Well, I’m happy you did,” Eric says graciously, trying to smooth over the awkwardness. “He’s very handsome, when he isn’t doing this Eeyore impression.”
“Just like his father,” Bob says reflexively —  defensively —  as Jack goes pink. “Eric, will you excuse us for a moment? Back in five minutes, tops.”
Eric offers a gracious wave, gaze lingering on Jack’s retreating back — and backside, bless — watching Bob rest a firm hand on his son’s neck, gripping tightly to lean in and furiously whisper something. As Eric watches, Jack looks back over his shoulder; it’s not the fond glance of a potential paramour. Regret, maybe? Grief, definitely.
He must be as disappointed to be cock-blocked by his father as Eric is.
Across the ice, Kent Parson has rushed Jack, gathering him into a crushing embrace that the younger man returns easily —  burying his face against Parson’s pads; pulling back only when Parson grabs Jack’s shoulders to push him away, taking a long look at him, holding his face between his hands briefly before pulling Jack back into his arms.
They don’t just look like old friends, it’s a reunion of desperation, like the videos his mother sends of soldiers coming home from war, but before Eric can think better of it, a teammate fists a hand in the collar of Eric’s sweater and pulls — away from Bob’s forlorn love child and forgotten first meetings — and the night goes on.
Bob doesn’t return. Neither does Jack.
Eric doesn’t even notice.

Sacrifice
Our Guild Discord had a writing prompt and it was a story I wanted to tell for a long time.
The eternal summer sky of Quel'thalas has clouded over.  A bone chilling wind sweeps through the cityscape, and on it comes the stomach churning stench of fetid death.  There is a buzz about the walking dead moving North, and mention that even the famed Sylvanas Windrunner has fallen to the forces that make their way ever closer.  The Scourge is attacking, with Arthas at the front of the Army of the Damned!  What is your character doing during the siege?!
hr.fancy { overflow: visible; padding: 0; border: none; border-top: medium double #fbb11e; text-align: center; width: 100%; margin: 2em 0 !important; margin-left: 0 !important; margin-right: 0 !important; max-width: 100% !important; } hr.fancy:after { content: '\00a7'; color: #850201; display: inline-block; position: relative; top: -0.75em; font-size: 1em; padding: 0 0.25em; background: #e7e4dc; } h2.belore { font-size:7rem; }
The din glow stretched the entire western horizon. The first hints of dawn started to peak over the eastern treeline. "She is burning." His voice was shaking, driven by the breaking of his heart. How could she fall. The idea that Quel'thalas could be overtaken was not even a possibility in his thoughts.
"Every cart we have is hitched and ready to go. I have sent the first ones on already. If we can get to Sunsail before it falls, word is they are ferrying as many as they can to Sunstrider Isle. We have to go now." Kayndor reached up and put his hand on his brother's shoulder as he made no acknowledgement of what he was saying. "Lar, we have to go."
It had only been a handful of hours since the bloodied Farstrider had woken them all in the night. Humans? Undead creatures? The elf had been badly injured and refused any aid from the estate. He had orders to warn every enclave and outpost of the impending advance. The fear in the young Farstriders face wasn't anything born of confusion, and his warning was clear "Evacuate or be lost. They are leaving no survivors."
"Lar!" Kayndor shook his brother's shoulder harder to snap him out of whatever stupor had taken hold.
"I am here, Kay. Where are we." He quickly snapped back watching the family and staff frantically try and pack down one of the last wagons.
"I have released the most experienced to take what weapons and those willing to fight on to Silvermoon. I have ordered a few more to stay behind to guard the children and inexperienced as we move. Cellars have been locked down. The chamber is sealed and warded."
"A few more minutes and we will all be ready to move out. Will you be assisting in the defense, Kayndor." Lar'thenan, the elder House Starweaver lord, glanced back over his shoulder towards the brighter glow of the fires near Silvermoon City.
"Once all of you are safe. Yes. Not before." Lar'thenan nodded and took one last look at the estate and the vineyards. The fog during the predawn hour obscured the most distant details, It would make travel even more treacherous. At least the invading force was at their backs.
"Burn through them all with the wrath of Belore's radiance." Lar'thenan spat on the ground as his calm demeanor broke for an instant.
"As you ordered too I made sure three packs of seedlings and seeds were sent on ahead. One to my contacts in Dalaran. We will regrow if the worst…" Lar'thenan scoffed at that as he interrupted.
"Yes prudent, but that was a very old plan in case the sieges by the Horde had made their way here. Quel'Thalas will not fall." Kayndor nodded, but his entire posture spoke that he believed otherwise.
"We do need to get mov-" Kayndor's comment hung in the air as a piercing scream came from the eastern corner of the estate. Both elves moved without even a moment's hesitation towards the cry. Joined by a few others they found the source. The young attendant expression frozen in horror, no light left in their eyes as a hulking shambling mass of something once living tore again into their shoulder. The vineyards shook as more 'things' started to weave through the rows getting tangled in the grown vines and trellis.
A single arrow passed through the shocked group and was followed up by a hastily conjured mass of flames from Kayndor's hand. "Father, Uncle, We are ready." Lys'aria knocked another arrow into her bow and fired at the scourge beast. It was struck square between the eyes once again, sending its grotesque form wobbling back. It crumpled, as the burning remnants filled the air with a putrid scent. The creatures moving in the vineyards began to pick up pace, tearing through and destroying anything that stood in their way.
"Go now." He turned to look at some of the frozen elves that had tried to come help whoever was screaming. The sight of the scourge and death itself shaking them. "NOW!" There was no question in that last command as it broke through their panicked induced torpor.
The small group joined the rest at the wagons. "Headcounts on the way. We move." Lar'thenan joined his wife in the middle wagon as the nervous hawkstriders were pressed into moving forward. "Daughter, do we have everyone accounted for."
Lys'aria shook her head, "I believe we do, most moved with the first wagons out, it's just those helping with the last bit of securing the estate. I sent Kahynas and Tristanis along with the first carts out…"
"He wasn't with them." Linandri jerked back and looked at the estate. "Tristanis wasn't going with the first group. He was helping locking…" Lady Starweaver's face blanched as she stared at the estate and the shadow forms of more scourge starting to appear at the periphery. "Lar…"
"I'm on it." Lys'aria turned her lone hawkstrider back towards the estate. Whatever protests there were she wasn't going to leave her brother there alone. She closed the distance to the main estate in the matter of a few moments, "Brace girl." She said as she barrelled straight towards the front doors of the estate, the hawkstrider curling to the side at the last moment and using its momentum to smash into the front doors. The ancient wooden doors broke from their hinges and sent both the hawkstrider and her rider tumbling into the Starweaver estates main hall.  "Tristanis! TRIST! Gods where are you." The dazed hawkstrider wobbled but seemed not to be much worse for wear, other than having a bit of wind knocked from it.
"SHIMMER. Answer me! Where are you!" A screech from the hawkstrider and she spun on her heel. Two quick arrows and the lesser scourge beast was pinned against the wall and silenced. They were already in their home. "Brother Please. Answer me." She screamed at the top of her lungs but no answer came.
She began to panic but was able to keep herself collected enough to remember some of her earlier lessons. The world may have been chaotic around her, but she focused. Listened. "Please answer." She whispered as he focused her hearing slowly. The creatures were growing in more numbers outside, getting closer. She would not be able to survive this alone. A voice. A cry. Fearful. It pierced through the other noises as a sharpened blade to her senses.
"Eveningstar...help me…I am to scared." Her brother's bedroom. He had to be there. Lys'aria gave a sharp whistle to her Hawkstrider that followed her down the hallway to the western end of the home. She slammed herself against the door. Forcing it open.
"Trist…" He was there, cowering and afraid. Pressed up against the dresser and wall and hugging his knees up tightly against his chest. "I am here We have to go." There were more sounds of breaking windows throughout the estate. Claws being raked against the exterior walls by near mindless things. She thrust her hand out to him to take. As he reached, Lys'aria was pulled backwards. A weapon struck hard against her leather armor and tore at her side. Blood started to flow. Trist recoiled back, as Lys'aria struck back She grabbed a pair of heavy arrows, using them as melee weapons. Screaming as she dug them into the chest of the mostly skeletal attacker. Her hawkstrider kicking and clawing at another scourge as she scrambled to get to her feet.
Lys'aria had incaptacated the scourge soldier just long enough to knock another arrow and let it fly into their skull. The blue glow of the soldier's eyes sputtered and eventually vanished. The second soldier was put down just as easily. She held her hand on her side trying to stem the bleeding. She pulled down her quiver and used the strap as a makeshift strap to hold pressure on the wound. "Shimmer please. We have to go." Her voice was not as confident as it was a moment before but this time Trist took her hand and grabbed onto his sister, trembling weakly against her. Her breathing was already ragged as she moved to get Trist onto the hawkstrider and her seated just behind him. "Hold on. Do not look back. Do not let go. No matter what. I will be with you all the way Shimmer." Lys'aria patted the side of the hawkstrider weakly. "Get us there, girl."
The halls of the lost estate echoed with the call of the single hawkstrider as it lurched forward. There were dozens in the main hall already but the hawkstrider lowered her head and ran through the scourge that were in the way. A burst of speed and it was free from the main hall and outside. Not a single one had laid a weapon or claw on them.
"It is going to be okay, Shimmer. We will get back to mother and father. They are already on their way." her voice was weak as she held herself tightly to keep either of them from slipping on the galloping hawkstrider.
"S-sorry! There was the scream and the thing. And and, I am sorry! I did not mean…" Trist started to ramble an apology as tears streamed down his face.
"Trist…Its…" She clung tighter using every bit of strength to hold them both on the hawkstrider as they made their way eventually catching up to the rest just before their arrival at the anchorage.
"Lys'aria! Tristanis!" Lar'thenan slowed the wagon as he leaped off to meet them. There was Chaos at the Anchorage, More than enough ships and space but panic had set in and others were demanding to get on first due to some perceived rank, station, or acquaintance. Trist finally opened his eyes as he felt Lys'aria being pulled off the saddle by his father. She felt so cold.
"Lys'aria! Answer me!" Her father was screaming at her as she lay still in his arms as he quickly put her down on the ground. "I need a healer! Please!" Trist's mother came and pulled Trist free from the Hawkstrider. Linandri pulled him up closer and turned him away from the scene as the body lay still. A priest, struggling to keep standing after the amount of power he had expended came and knelt by Lys'aria side. "I am so sorry, she has passed on. There is nothing I can do here." Trist had heard his father wail only once when his eldest brother had passed in the first war and he was given the news. It was a sound he'd never heard until this moment as he saw her lifeless body be pulled up by his father.
Trist just hugged onto his mother tightly as she held him even closer. Her own sobbing muffled a bit as Trist was held tightly against her.
There came the sound of wailing from one of the ships as it sailed to one of the evacuation points on Sunstrider Isle. The deck hands and evacuees had no idea what had happened as the started to move to look over the railing at one of their sister ships. Silvermoon was in flames. The news came as one of the magisters from the other ship teleported to theirs. "The King has fallen! They advance on the Sunwell. Quel'thalas is lost!" The silence on the ship was only punctuated by the wails and cries from other ships. The silence only lasted a moment before the elves on the ship, some falling to their knees in grief began to cry out in pain and loss.
"Sh-she's gone because of me. My Evening Star is gone because of me…" Trist clung onto his parents as the wails of the elves grew louder.
"She saved you. Never forget what she gave you to be here."

Roborock S5 Robot Vacuum Review: Jack-of-All-Trades, Master of None.According to a Roborock representative, although the Roborock S5 employs exactly the same app produced by Xiaomi as the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map data is saved locally on the robot and only goes into the Cloud when a user views the map on the smartphone program. As much as 20 maps are saved in the Cloud in any given time, and are automatically deleted after a year. When users delete a map in the program, it's also removed in the Cloud. Much like the program that communicates the Mi Home app, the Eufy Robovac 30C was made to control house devices that were smart. The design isn't instinctive while the vacuum section of this app is robust. Exactly what the Roborock S5 lacked in cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpet test region at an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, nearly a complete hour quicker than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes fast compared to Shark Ion R85. It wasn't quite as quickly as the Neato Botvac D7, which cleaned the test region in an average of 10 minutes, 22 seconds. Mopping performance One of our favorite design elements of the Robovac S5 is its"hood." Flip up the plastic bit that is and you'll come across the dustbin hidden in the middle, along with a Wi-Fi indicator light and system reset button. The S5 was the real robot vacuum cleaner we reviewed that had an onboard area to maintain the tool for cleaning the brush roll, a means to maintain functionality whilst improving the aesthetic. An indented section close to the rear is supposed to hold the microfiber mop module. Once the Roborock S5 get its claws, it cleaned areas in a thorough back-and-forth snake layout. The robot vacuum found its way through the maze under our dining room table, readily weaving its way to the other out of one side of the space. We appreciated how closely the S5 hewed to walls and seat legs;it tackled walls and edges as closely as the Neato Botvac D7.
Tumblr media
The vac was also smart enough to completely avoid a thick pile rug that felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation meant it didn't fit under our chairs or our low-clearance sofa. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8 percent of all test debris on carpeting --a performance on a level with the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar story, picking up an average of 83.9% of test debris. It was bested by the Botvac D7 by 12 percent. Note that Map Saving Mode is currently in beta and must be toggled on individually under Vacuum Settings in the app. We spent a few test runs re-mapping our floor due to the map not saving mechanically. Both the iRobot Roomba i7+ and also the Botvac D7 can save floor plans. The security company AV-Test recently assessed four different app-connected robot vacuums' security, including the Roborock S55 and the Roomba 980. The Roborock S55 performed the worst; AV-Test said this was"Due partially to gross security deficiencies in data transmission, the transfer of information to third parties, the app's unexplainable thirst for data, in addition to a very clear need for improvement in the statement on the handling of customer data." The guide recommends running a vacuum cycle that is normal over the region at least three times. We did so, but it did not appear to help. The S5 abandoned the mopped area dull and a little sticky. If it had been possible to use something along with water in the tank it could have performed better. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself using a mopping quality that's unique one of the robot vacuums we tested, but unfortunately, its prowess is truly useful. A half-inch slender, half-moon-shaped disk using a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides beneath the rear of the vacuum. Fill out the dish using water, click it in, adjust the Cleanup manner and you are ready to wash. If you guessed the Go icon would begin a basic cleaning cycle, then you'd be wrong. Instead, Go directs the S5 to a stage on the cleaning map for the bot to perform a place cleaning. By activating the icon, an overall vacuuming cycle is initiated. Buried in the Settings menu are five different Cleanup modes: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The program, and by extension, the vacuum, retains the mode last used. At the center of this robot is a increased laser cap around the Neato Botvac D7 using a dab of orange beneath, very similar to this one. Over the cover are physical buttons for cleaning, on/off and recharging.
Tumblr media
Perhaps due to its colour, the wall detectors on front and side of the S5 are more conspicuous than on other models, but they do not detract in the bot look. The Roborock S5 measures 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch larger than the Shark Ion R85; it's also larger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7. Cleaning performance Picking up dog hair on both hardwood and carpet stymied many of those robot vacuums we analyzed, including the Roborock S5;it picked up only 79.5 percent of pet hair--10 percent less compared to Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less than the Ion R85. However, the S5 did finest the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup rate. "Beginning the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Instead of a string of Morse code-like beeps and chimes employed by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and lots of other modern appliances, the S5 announces what it is likely to perform in easy-to-understand language prompts. The Roborock S5 performed well, but not outstandingly so. On hardwood and carpeting, it picked up an average of 96.2 percent of the Cheerios strewn throughout the test region, which was marginally less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, that scooped a perfect 100 percent on this test. In 63.8 decibels, the Roborock S5 was noticeably louder than the Shark Ion R85 (59.2). We had the ability to have a conversation with another person in the room because the vacuum worked around us, but definitely raised our voices.
Tumblr media
Security concerns The Roborock S5 is mostly controlled through the Mi Home app (Android and iOS). Linking the robot to the app and also to our home wi-fi network took two tries, largely because the directions for pairing the bot into the network were not very apparent. Abstruse instructions turned into a theme of the S5. The black-and-white pier for the Roborock S5 is slightly taller than the vacuum itself. A large, clear plastic mat attaches to the dock, but it's only needed if you plan on using the mop attachment. The main screen displays the place cleaning time and our favourite piece of information--remaining battery lifetime. Along the base are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. Despite its larger size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches high, the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690. While we do not love the laser cover at the middle, the feature was significantly less obtrusive than the one on the D7, that has a large overhang and penchant for becoming stuck beneath room chairs. We were reluctant to give the S5 free reign to mop in case it decided to test and wash our carpet, so we used the spot-cleaning mode, which cleans a 1.5- meter (4.9 feet) area around wherever the S5 is put. Turns out our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 made about as much water as a wet Swiffer pad on the ground. If only it had cleaned as a Swiffer does. We were enthused about zone cleaning since it is a wonderful way to perform a cleaning of front hall or kitchen where there's more foot traffic. You can draw boxes. Unlike the Roomba i7+ and also the Neato Botvac D7, you can't save or title the zones, which means you need to redraw every time to the area that you wish to clean them. Adding to the confusion is a Edit Map button on the screen that allows you draw virtual barrier tape and no-go zones.
Tumblr media
Installation and app Layout  If you are adding your home and a robot vacuum, you want it to look good -- particularly if it's docked on your living room. The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-gray color scheme embraced by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. However, don't expect to access some features using Alexa; the only options are On and Away, which prompts to bot to come back to its foundation. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot house, as opposed to Cease, which pauses the vacuum in its tracks. Flip the Roborock S5 above and you'll find two black rubber wheels on both sides, a wheel at front, and a three-spoke side brush to the leftside. Between the black wheels are the mix rubber and bristle roller brush. Though similar to the brush around the Eufy Robovac 30c, the S5's roller brush stayed remarkably free of hair and fuzz. We were amazed with how the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 appeared to announce it hit something with elastic clunk; the S5 was considerably more considerate. The robot slows its strategy and its own brush before gingerly approaching an obstruction when the S5 decided an item was approachable, it approached with gusto. The S5 pushed on chairs and dog bowls than the Shark Ion R85 and the Neato Botvac D7. It wasn't harmful, but I would not leave a delicate vase onto a plant stand around during a cleaning.

Title: The Garden Rules | [inspo] Rating: K Summary: A game of hide-and-seek amongst the headstones starts a life-long conversation between two boys.
The game of hide-and-seek in the sun-dappled graveyard began mid-way through the Carlton funeral. Though the Trevor family had brought their other children, only Victor played with the Funn twins this afternoon. Only Victor dared to break with the propriety his family demanded of their children. Rudyard, as he elucidated the rules for the hundredth time, loved Victor for it. Most people wouldn’t think that playing a game of hide-and-seek was a brave thing to do, but Rudyard sometimes thought he’d never met a braver person than Victor.
“ - And remember,” Rudyard continued, “Absolutely no peeking. If you’re caught cheating, you will automatically be disqualified and any points you have earned will be evenly distributed among the remaining players.”
“There aren’t points in hide-and-seek!” Antigone, his sister, protested with a sniffle. Her allergies made her terrible at hide-and-seek. If ever she tried to hide in the bushes or a tree, she would have the worst sneezing fit and be found easily. “Honestly, Rudyard-!”
“There are points!” he protested. “For every person you find, you get a point. Two points if you find them within the first ten minutes-”
“Christ,” Antigone said. “Victor, please explain to my brother that there aren’t points to hide-and-seek-!”
Victor was silent for a long time. For all that Rudyard admired Victor’s bravery, Victor admired the determination in Rudyard’s dark, glittering eyes and the confidence with which he spoke. If he said there was a points system in hide-and-seek, Victor just might believe it, even if it was to earn a rare smile from the other boy. He made a soft, noncommital noise.
“Not… traditionally,” Victor said. “But it adds something to the game - a goal to strive for.”
“Yes, exactly!” Rudyard clapped his hands together. “That’s two-to-one. You’ve been out-voted, Antigone!”
Antigone mumbled irritated swears under her breath - or at least the boys thought they must have been swears. They didn’t care to ask. Instead, Rudyard announced that he would count first and he shut his eyes, faced the wall of the mausoleum and began to count to one hundred. His voice rang out across the cemetery as Victor and Antigone scattered across the verdant lawn, ducking behind headstones. Victor settled along the edge of the cemetery, where wildflowers and brush encroached upon the manicured lawn. He lay very still, feeling the thudding of his heart knock against his suit. He lay on his belly, chest to the ground and blue eyes searching the cemetery for his friends. Antigone had all-but disappeared and Victor thought it would take Rudyard much longer than ten minutes to find her. He hoped Rudyard would find him quickly and they could look for her together. He didn’t mind if it garnered Rudyard an extra point and forced him to be the next seeker. It was a lovely day and he wanted to spend it with his best friend. Not even the death of a cousin could spoil the afternoon. He listened and from where he crouched, Victor could hear a few birds singing in the ancient willow tree, punctuating Rudyard’s sharp counting with sweet song. Above him, the blue sky stretched endlessly.
Meanwhile, Rudyard counted. Eyes shut, he saw none of the wonders of the cemetery, but he knew it well. This was his domain in the same way the more popular kids claimed the playground or the football pitch as theirs. The only son of the island’s only funeral director, Rudyard knew where each denizen of Piffling Vale was buried, the square footage of each family plot. He knew which hills were the highest and provided the best views of the cemetery - whether it was of the lake that no one else seemed to notice, the spire of the church, the direct view of the village square (and thus, his home at the center of it all) or just where his sister and best friend had hidden. He didn’t need to look to see it in his mind’s eye. He wondered where Victor had hidden. Antigone was so good at hiding that she often won the game, which was why Rudyard had implemented a points system for the seekers. As he called out the numbers, Rudyard listened for movement, but only heard the song of a lark in the distance. He tried to decipher it but found it unuseful to his purpose.
“-98, 99, 100!”
He set off in search of Victor and Antigone, wandering between headstones, careful not to step on any bodies - the disrespect of walking across a grave had been impressed upon him at an early age. Weaving between them, Rudyard scanned the grounds. In the distance, he could hear Reverend Wavering conducting the service.
“You can’t hide forever!” Rudyard called out. “I know you’re in here somewhere!”
He snickered to himself softly. He liked to sound imposing and serious, but this game delighted him until the realization that Victor and Antigone might have disappeared altogether struck him. He began to check frantically among the hanging branches of the willow and behind every headstone until he saw Victor laying prone in the grass. A smile split Rudyard’s face. Descending upon him with a laugh, Rudyard poked Victor’s ribs.
“A-ha! I knew you couldn’t hide forever!” he crowed triumphantly while Victor laughed and squirmed at being tickled. “That’s seven minutes and twelve seconds - two points! Ha!”
They wrestled in the grass for a breathless moment, both laughing and rolling towards the iron fence. They stopped short of hitting it but disappeared under the wild tufts of lavender peeking through the bars. Soon, the game of hide-and-seek fell to the wayside. There would be no finding Antigone, anyway, and from the shady spot beneath the lavender, Rudyard could see swatches of blue peeking through the branches and sunlight dappling Victor’s skin and hair.
“-I just wish it could be like this all the time,” Victor said, folding his legs in towards his chest. “I wish I could stay here… with you. And Antigone, of course.”
“Mmm.” Rudyard tilted his head. “When we grow up, maybe you can move here. Buy a cottage overlooking the sea, close enough that I can walk to you.”
“I’d like that. Being close to you.”
Rudyard smiled and he put his hand atop Victor’s, which rested upon his knee. Victor startled and turned to face Rudyard. Rudyard’s bright eyes darkened with an unfamiliar look that made Victor feel hopelessly adrift in them. He wanted to stay lost in Rudyard’s gaze forever and he didn’t know why. At twelve years old, he’d never known such a feeling before. It terrified him.
Rudyard traced Victor’s lips curiously with his eyes. They looked soft and gentle, much like the rest of his friend, but he wanted to know for sure. He’d never before kissed anyone and had always thought the impulse to press your mouth to another person’s mouth was - at best - unhygienic. Now, however, he felt deep stirrings of curiosity swell within him. Maybe he understood why adults did what they did. Maybe he didn’t. He was young still - just twelve - and he didn’t know much about love. What little he did know boiled to this: he loved Victor.
Experimentally, Rudyard cupped one of Victor’s cheeks in his hand. He felt Victor’s breath catch. He was warm and soft and temptation sang like a symphony in his chest. Then, leaning over, Rudyard planted a kiss upon Victor’s opposite cheek. Beneath his lips, Victor’s skin warmed. When he looked, Victor’s skin flushed a deep red. It made Rudyard, in turn, blush.
“We should find Antigone,” Victor mumbled, looking away shyly.
“Forget Antigone,” Rudyard said. “Victor, I-”
“RUDYARD! ANTIGONE!”
Rudyard peeked out from between the branches and saw his father gesticulating angrily at his watch. At his shoulder, Rudyard’s mother, sour-faced and serious, scanned the cemetery for her children. The Trevors still congregated amongst themselves and did not call for Victor.
“We’ll continue this conversation,” Rudyard said. He darted out of the brush, but not before pressing one more, quick kiss to Victor’s cheek.
Victor watched him go. He touched his fingers reverently to the place Rudyard had kissed twice and as he watched his best friend receive chastisement from his father, he thought of the things his own father would say if he knew what had just transpired. A shudder wracked Victor’s thin frame and he remained hidden until the Funns found Antigone and the four of them walked away. Then, slowly emerging from his hiding place, Victor inspected himself for mud and grass-stains before trudging back to his parents. This conversation - “conversation” - was far from over.  Not for the first time, Victor thought he couldn’t wait for the next family funeral.

On Killing A Rat
"By biting through a dam, even a rodent may cover out a country."
Edmund Burke
Hardly any animals in the Western world are as dreaded and chastised as the key rodent. Rodents are connected with space suite ghettos, sewers and waste. They bring affliction, degenerate sustenance, and are absolutely hard to dispose of once they set up a state. In swarm circles a source is known as a rodent. When I was an enthusiastic my mates and I would holler, "You rodent!" at one another when we expected to utilize a swearword that would not get our mouths washed out with creation. Rodents undermined Winston Smith, the stunning individual of 1984, and in Richard Wright's Native Son, Bigger Thomas butchers a rodent with an iron skillet as the novel starts. Albert Camus' The Plague opens with innumerable rodents dead in the city of Oran, an emissary to the scourge going to overpower the city.
Regardless, I had insignificant individual idea with rodents. A couple of adolescents I acknowledged kept rodents as pets, and they don't showed up anything over more clear than regular mice, like what the Romans called "Mus Maximus" (Big Mouse, a rodent, figuratively speaking) rather than "Mus Minimus" (Little Mouse). So when mid one night near the start of summer 2011 I saw an irritating lessening shaded animal with a long tail flooding about the bits of my lemon tree, I was nonplused. This was no little adolescents' pet. This was a colossal, extended, and extremely abhorrent creature that had advanced into my yard and was really starting at now pigging out itself on the substance of one of my fowl feeders. With surprising inclination it slithered unadroitly down the barrel fused side, planted itself on the round roost where the winged animals should sit, and ate results be chastised, astonishing its nose like a rabbit and utilizing its paws like an electric saw. It ran when I drew nearer, moving with stunning pace, up the side of the winged animal feeder and back up into the branches, scattering among the leaves.
The following night it was back before long, eating voraciously. At sunset the day after that it brought a beautification. At long last there were two, and the next night there were four. These rodents were underscoring exponentially. Taking off to my PC I made "rodents" on Google. I got more than 95,000,000 outcomes, and a vivacious examination of several the articles I found set me up I had an issue I would do well to orchestrate, with no veritable system to lose.
I expected to dispose of the rodents, or soon I would be gotten with them. Rodents are mind blowing for how hair-raising they go over. In any case, I expected to do it as mindful as could be standard the condition being what it is and in as earth satisfying a course as I could. I made a visit to the closest home improvement shop, and after a watchful see what was on the racks under the standard title "Rat Control," I left away with what I thought were the best decisions: Two insignificant plastic "rat boxes," with round openings on either side for the rodents to encounter, four places inside to put the squares of ruinous substance (that way on a crucial measurement the rodents and not some space feline would undeniably get to them) and spots for a spring-stacked rodent trap, two of which I got. These were, I found, a quantum weave in power from the old Victor wooden mousetraps I had seen starting at now. The jaws of these gotten an exasperating trouble that really debilitated me the headliner when I heard it, and would unmistakably bring moment (and ideally pressing) decimation to any rodent that pursuit down after the nutty spread I utilized as draw. I set the contraptions, put the squares of revolting green hurting substance in their spots, and put the cases under the trees a couple of feet isolated from each other, sprinkled some winged creature seed around each, and wrapped up. While I held up I put wisely colossal centrality in Google, discovering a few diagrams concerning rodents.
Rodents are most senseless for having gotten the Black Plague to Europe the fourteenth Century. Coming the Silk Road from China, rodents passing on plague-bearing bugs achieved the Crimea in 1346, and beginning there ricocheted on board flatboats set out toward Europe. The resultant pandemic, possibly the most clearly repulsive at whatever point, executed a standard one-part of the bigger part. Medieval procedure couldn't find the reason nor may it have the choice to treat the hurt. Individuals went to rest clearly suffering and kicked the compartment in their rest. The dead were unequivocal to the point that in express spots there was nobody staying to cover them. Europe would not recoup for a long time.
By some fortuitous event, there is all around more to the human-rodent relationship than the plague, as I was soon to find. Rodents have resolvedly followed in the structures for human development. Where there are individuals, there will be rodents. Rodents before long live on every scene on earth by Antarctica, making them the best all around made creature on earth after individuals. It is plot there is one rodent for each human on earth. One story, possibly rushed, stipends that in spots where rodents are particularly uncommon, an individual at some self-unequivocal time is all around that really matters ten feet from one.
Rodents have a stunning present for survival. On Engebi, one of the Eniwetok Atolls where atomic bombs were had a go at in the midst of the 1950s, virtuosos came back to perceive what stayed after the bombs were detonated. They found radioactive soil, vegetation squashed and a succeeding space of rodents. Rodents can continue through a fall of 50 feet without talent. Striking swimmers, they can cross wide streams (a massive mass improvement of rodents was recorded in Southern Russia in 1727 while unending them swam over the River Volga from Astrakhan). They can step water for three days without resting and bounce to profundities of 100 feet. They live a standard of 2 to 3 years, and a female rodent generally has a litter of 6 to 12 relatives six or on different occasions each year. They live in states (packs) with each rodent's set in the social systems obliged by their pulling in most astounding, the amazing people at the top. They rest together, groom one another, and get a few information about play and play doing fighting. Unequivocally when the state gets an insane part of titanic, the all the all the all the all the furthermore singing people leave to begin zones of their own.
Rodents are known for their sharp teeth and astonishing jaws. Not exclusively are their teeth sharp, they are incredibly hard: Measured on the Mohs hardness scale they come in at 5.5, harder than iron or platinum, and the larger part as hard as beneficial stone, which checks 10. These hard teeth collaborate with rodents to eat through wood, bone, plastic pipe, even square. Rodents will eat about anything, and have been known to eat substance, calfskin, and spreads, yet incline toward grain, controlled animals feed, and meat of different sorts, including human, paying little regard to the course by which that events of that are hair-raising. Regardless, with their colossal needs, they can and will eat 33% of their body weight each day.
Their visual speed is poor, obliged to just two or three feet. They hear endlessly well, and have made estimation of touch and smell. A rodent can run 24 miles an hour for a short part. They are viewed as fit, one reason they are scan for after wearisome for research center tests, and a pushing report discovered rodents to have metacognition, "thinking about knowing," a most superb starting late chronicled boundlessly in people and primates.
In express bits of the world, individuals go to rodents. In India rodents are viewed as a vehicle for Lord Ganesha, and statues of rodents sit in Ganesha refuges. At the Temple of the rats, in Rajasthan state, admirers make this a walk further and take part with 20,000 of the unbelievable animals to live in the ensured house, thinking of them as favored animals called kabbas. Butchering one there, as you may have considered, is unlawful, and the rodents are permitted to run free while the strong arrangement with their supplications in the ensured house. In the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, and parts of Polynesia, rodents are eaten as a key piece of the standard eating plan. In China the rodent is the key creature of the Chinese Zodiac, and individuals considered in the Year of the Rat are thought to have characteristics of realness, innovative centrality, data and need properties that rodents are thought to have what's more.
Overlooking I expected to dispose of the rodents in my yard. For a few days nothing appeared to occur. The rodents still showed up, unquestionably, to be each night for their gobbling up learning of flying creature seed, yet I saw their numbers were never again making. By then late one night I heard a blending sound from under the trees where I had left the rat boxes. Something was moving in the fallen leaves. I went to research and saw a little rat head fly out of the opening for the case. This was trailed by about piece of the rodent's body. It ate insatiably at the winged animal seed that I had spread on the ground, utilizing its paws vivaciously, like the course by which a ground squirrel fortifies, by then pulled back inside the case, just to develop again a minute later to eat more. As I came nearer it gave me a sidelong look, picked I was nobody of any centrality, ate more, and a compact time go apportioning later spread no insufficiency.
Something was out of synchronize here. For what reason didn't it escape? For what reason hadn't it incapacitated the contraption inside? Almost certainly I drew nearer, yet I wasn't amped conspicuous all around for getting moronically close-I expected to get nibbled by the rodent. By then the rodent kept eating. By then it got an affectin

And The AWRD Goes To... (Part 33)
Note: Ooops. I just learned that Kuchinashi is actually SOUTH of Mistral, not North, where Hoshiko is meant to be. I already corrected it to Wind Path, sorry for any sort of geographic confusion. The irony is that they’re actually learning geography for this chapter.
Oh well.
I also apologize for the excess of exposition that apparently wasn’t delivered very elegantly. I have plans for action and the return of the plot, and the villain next chapter. You’ll also finally get to see Snowie, Nick, and Freya in action.
With Akko’s guidance, Ruby’s super-speed, and the many, many, many mechanisms Nick had installed in the obstacle course to move materials and people around easily, they were done in little less than fifteen minutes. Granted, it was a very simple, small topic—a very general overview of the geography of Mistral, fit for a student just entering grade school—but it boded well for their future experimenting if the preparations were this simple and speedy.
All they really needed to do now was see how it actually worked.
The three of them stood at the top of a tower just a little higher up and to the right of the center of the obstacle course, a printed tarpaulin of the city of Mistral behind them, with a painted sign of a compass nearby.
Akko looked at Ruby and Diana in turn, smiling. “You guys ready to take a trip all throughout Mini-Mistral…?” she asked.
“Yes,” Diana replied. “Where to first?”
“Where else?” Akko said. “To Hoshiko!” she cried, doing the familiar pose, before she ran up a bridge nearby. “Thanks to the fact that we pass through a lot of mountain ridges and vallyes, what do we have to use to get there…?”
“An airship,” Diana replied as she and Ruby followed, looking at the models of Mistralian airships set up on the railings, their rotors and wings gently flapping with the breeze.
“And to where, exactly…?” Akko said, smiling as she walked backwards to the next tarpaulin.
“Wind Path!” Ruby cried cheerfully.
“And what three things is Wind Path famously known for...?” Akko said as she picked up a box, flipped open the lid and pulled items out.
“Being the biggest shipping and trading center here in Mistral!” Akko said as she pulled out a PLUCKO block in the shape of a cargo container.
“The biggest and best equipped shipyards in all of the kingdom, beating even the capital city!” she continued with a fully-constructed PLUCKO block set depicting just that.
“And of course: airship tourism!” she finished with a fully-constructed PLUCKO block of a cruise airship, complete with little PLUCKO People riding at the top, raising their arms up as if cheering, smiles on their panted plastic faces.
Akko tossed them all back into the box, you could hear the little PLUCKO people on tour meeting their tragic end at a disastrous crash involving an airship yard, and a wayward shipping container. She put the box back down, and went up a climbing net. “Now, what do you have to cross on your way to Northern Anima?” she called out as she started turning a crank at the top, powering the fans sitting on the sides.
“Vast mountain ranges, difficult to settle for the constant, powerful, and chilling snowstorms!” Diana cried out as she and Ruby climbed after her, shivering for the cold air blowing.
“Also the Yuki-Onna hiding in those storms!” Ruby added.
“And what mountain town managed to do just that, even if it’s tiny?” Akko asked as she stopped cranking, scrambled up after them.
“Hoshiko!” Ruby cheered as they made it to the top, pointing at the little tiny wooden model of a village on the edge of the platform.
“Yes!” Akko said. “Now, we’ve hit the snowy, cold north of Anima!” she said, pointing at the patches of cotton “snow” and cardboard “mountains” they’d hung from or nailed on the trees, the branches, and the platforms. “Now, what’s the one major settlement that’s survived all these decades?
“Hestia.” Diana replied.
“Which is built…?” Akko asked, waggling her eyebrows as she crawled into a cardboard box “tunnel.”
“Underground and into the mountain range it’s in, just like the Bunker!” Ruby said as she cheerfully followed after her.
Diana hesitated for a moment, before she sighed, and crawled in after them.
“And what is Hestia also called, unofficially…?” Akko said as she held up a lapel pin of Atlas’ insignia.
“Little Mantle, because of its large immigrant population from Solitas, and also because it was the forefront of the Anima-Solitas trade route,” Diana replied. “The first step for imports into this continent, and the last step for exports out of it, also.”
“And what three things is the city best known for…?” Akko said as she picked up a new box.
“Technology!” Ruby cried as she pulled out a little model of a Hestian drilling machine. “Oh, man, I know the very best comes from Atlas, but Hestia just can’t be beat for creativity!”
“Traditional metalworking, also,” Diana said as she picked up a tiny, tin pot with a lid. “Weapons and tools, mostly, but their cooking tools are prized today still.”
“Which is all powered by…?” Akko held out the box to them, let them see what was taped to the inside of it.
“Hot springs and geothermal plants, alongside their ample dust deposits,” Diana said as she looked at the laminated poster of one of Hestia’s largest and most popular spas.
They put the items back in the box, Akko set it down, and started walking around the platform. “Now, name three things the settlements outside of Hestia are known for!” she said, gesturing around them and at the laminated pictures hanging off the trees, or props resting by their feet.
“Temples and religious sites, some of which are still worshiping and practicing today...” Diana said as she looked up at a branch, found a wooden model of one such location nestled in it.
“Yaks, sheep, and goats!” Ruby cried, picking up and hugging plushies of them. “Oh my gosh, all their milk is so good, and their cheeses are so different and delicious from regular cow’s, too!”
“Some of the finest textile work and clothes to have ever come out of Mistral, too,” Diana said, rubbing a cut-out square of a rug between her fingers. Her eyes widened. “Oh… damn, is this 100% authentic wool…?”
“These are so soft, oh my gosh!” Ruby cried as she nuzzled the plushies.
“All of Winter’s plushies and the rug, yeah!” Akko said. “But anyway, we need to go down to North-West Anima from the snowy mountain peaks! And how do we do that…?” she asked, slapping a laminated picture at the top of tube slide.
“Sleds.” Diana replied.
“Bingo!” Akko said, shooting her finger guns, before she entered the slide and held onto the sides. “All aboard, everyone!”
Ruby eagerly got behind her, Diana shook her head before she brought up the rear. Down they went, making a few turns before they hit a cushion at the bottom. Diana winced at the squishy, wet, disgusting sound it made as they stepped on it.
“Welcome to North-West Anima, everyone!” Akko said as they trudged through the simulated sludge, squishy bags of goop inside tires laid on their sides. “Now, what the hell are we stepping on right now?”
“Ugh, I’m guessing the uninhabitable bogs full of industrial run-off, just at the foot of the mountains...” Diana groaned. “Goodness, did you REALLY have to make the sound this awful?”
“The worse it is, the better I remembered it, sorry!” Akko said as they finally climbed off, found themselves in a “mangrove swamp” mostly made out of cardboard, rope “vines” and plastic “insects” dangling from the branches above them. “So, quick question: are there any major cities here? yes or no.” she asked as she came to a wooden sign that had the question printed on it.
“No.” Diana replied.
Akko whipped out the bar that had been hiding the answer: “No.” She read out the question just underneath it: “What are the three major reasons why?”
“High humidity,” Ruby replied as looked around and found a picture of a breeze full of water droplets. “Wood, leather, machines especially—they’d all warp or rust super fast because of all the moisture in the air. Not to mention you’d feel all gross and sticky on really hot days.”
“The very geography of the location, too,” Diana said as she weaved her way around the treacherous ground, avoiding stepping on more of the simulated-bog. “It was hard to get anywhere by vehicle, necessitating long, dangerous treks on foot...”
She looked up, yelped as she saw the gaping maws of an alligator.
“The animals, too!” Ruby said, giggling as she worked the hinge of the wooden alligator head, making its jaws snap noisily a few times. “Just as, if not more dangerous than the Grimm there!”
Diana glared at her, Akko hopped and skipped her way across the swamp with the calm, practiced motions of someone who’d done it hundreds of times before. She picked up another box of goodies, and opened it up. “Why do people keep living here still, though?” she asked. “You know, aside from getting away from the major cities?”
“Botany,” Diana said, picking up a dried sample of a swamp flower in a case. “So many exotic, and valuable herbs you really won’t find anywhere else...” she said with a wistful look.
“Animals again!” Ruby said as she picked up a bone knife wrapped in an alligator skin sheath. “Dead and skinned for armour, weapons, accessories, though.”
“And finally, alchemy,” Diana said as she picked up a doll with a lab coat and wild, gray hair. “No better place for such a laboratory, especially with experiments you’d rather the Council doesn’t know.”
“Great! Now, let’s go, WAY further down, to South-West Anima!” Akko said, fighting her way through a curtain of “vines” and more of those simulated bogs, to a platform with sandbags, cardboard “tropical trees,” with three tarpaulins smaller scattered about than the one large one.
“Where are we now…?” Akko asked excitedly.
“The South-West Isles!” Ruby cheered.
“And what are the three most important settlements here…?” Akko said, pointing in three different directions.
“Mayari, Varuna, and Amil,” Diana replied.
“And what do all three of them export to the rest of Mistral…?” Akko said, holding up another box.
“Fruits and fish!” Ruby said, picking some strawberries up. “Aww, plastic…”
“Yeah, we used to put real ones in, but then it got too expensive and sometimes I’d forget about them and they’d go bad,” Akko said. “Anyway…?” more shaking the box.
“Spices,” Diana said, picking up an empty box of curry powder.
“And finally…?”
“Medicine,” Diana replied, picking up one of their famous pouches for herbs and cures. “My family had great use of them, for research and daily work both.”
“And Remnant’s all the better because of them,” Akko said as she climbed onto a boat hanging in the air. “Now let’s set sail, sail across the sea to South Anima!”
Ruby and Diana climbed aboard, Akko cranked the wheel, powering a fan that blew their sail, and more importantly, the gears that’d send the boat to the platform on the other side. “Whoo!” Akko gasped as they hit “land” again. “Now where are we…?”
“Elysium, where else?” Diana said as they began to step out, she looked at the mountain ranges, vast seas and harbours, even a Hoplite’s helmet hanging off one of the branches.
“Exactly!” Akko said, taking in a few breaths before she continued. “And what is Elysium famous for…?” she said, pulling up another box and opening it.
“I got this: weapons, warfare, and martial prowess!” Ruby cried. “They were the most militaristic and the most advanced in the kingdom, with some of the best, most famous, and intricate designs for traditional methods, even today!” she squealed as she pulled out a toy replica of an Elysian spear. “Sorry, I just REALLY love Elysium weapon designs!”
As Ruby fawned over that, Diana picked up a plastic cornucopia. “Agriculture also—they couldn’t have fielded their massive armies and their constant campaigns if they couldn’t feed them.”
“And finally…?”
“Architecture, like the original campus of Sanctum, before they moved it closer to Mistral, the city!” Ruby said as she put the spear down, picked up a wooden model of one of Elysium’s famous fighting pits.
“Bonus round!” Akko said as she came up to a shrouded picture on a tree. “Who’s the four-time champion of Mistral’s annual regional tournaments, also known as the girl on the cover of Pumpkin Pete’s...?”
“Pyrrha Nikos!” Ruby cheered.
“Correct!” Akko said, pulling the cloth away to reveal a framed and signed picture of Pyrrha, one of the mass-produced copies. “Now, let’s move!” she cried as she went up a rope. “Up the mountain ranges, down them again, through the inhospitable deserts of South-East Mistral until finally we’re at...”
“Caldera,” Diana said, squinting as the canopy above them broke, the bright mid-morning sun shining down gleefully on them.
Akko handed her and Ruby sunglasses, she made do with putting her hand over her eyes. “And what do you find that’s worth trekking into this land of constant volcanic activity, earthquakes, and scorching heat by day, freezing cold by night…?” she said as she picked up that section’s box.
“Gemstones and minerals!” Ruby said, picking up a handful of plastic gems. “Great for focuses for industrial cutting lasers, lenses for scopes, and really durable metals for armour and weapons.”
“Exotic delicacies,” Diana said, smiling as she picked up an empty, partially rusting tin for sugar skulls. “The ‘scorched earth’ is surprisingly friendly to plants and native animals.”
“Oh, hey, Tezca!” Ruby said, pulling up a long-empty bottle of Tezcatzontecati. “Uncle Qrow loves this stuff! Well, he loves all alcohol in general, but this is one of his favourite brands.”
Akko took the items back, before she wiped the sweat off her brow. “Let’s get out of here, it’s getting really hot out here!”
They headed back to the shade, and into a hollow carved out of a tree, a storage area that had one of the large tarpaulins hung on its wall.
“Kuchinashi, of course,” Diana said as they started looking around. “I suppose it’s not all conveniently inside a box this time, to keep in line with the city’s reputation for secrecy…?”
“Mhmm!” Akko said. “So, what is it known for…?”
“Kage!” Ruby cried as she pulled out a cloth roll of fake weapons. “Graceful. Discreet. Deadly. Lethal poisons; designs made for precise, killing blows delivered onto unsuspecting targets; trickery and deceit, all the essential tools for any super-secret, super-awesome SHADOW-ASSASSIN!” she made a sound that Diana supposed was her imitating the noises the supposedly silent warriors made in action movies.
“The birthplace of the Shadow Council, the secret cabal of criminals, smugglers, and slaves that sought to undermine the Emperor during the Great War...” Diana said as she pulled out an imitation of one of their infamous “Seikyo” scrolls, a courtesy they extended to those they assassinated or overthrew shortly after. “Currently running Mistral’s criminal underworld, if the rumours are to be believed.”
She noticed another scroll nearby. “And finally… the lyrics to Senbonzakura?” she asked as she rolled it out.
“To represent the songs they used for secret messages, signals, and getting people angry at Mantle, yeah,” Akko said.
“I got that, but why this, and not one of the more popular songs?”
“Weiss sang it her first time entering the Tsukimi Festival, I helped her write out the lyrics in Tenjin, help her pronounce it,” Akko replied.
“Well...” Diana muttered. “That certainly explains the quality of the calligraphy...” she said as she carefully rolled it up, and returned it where she found it.
“Try not to mention that song, or ask if she’s joining this year, by the way,” Akko said. “The Tsukimi Festival is where Aqua and her met, and, well, you already know what happened...”
“Noted,” Diana said.
“Any other topics we should avoid?” Ruby asked.
“Nothing that I haven’t already taught you,” Akko replied. “Now come on, let’s head back to Mistral!”
They came back to the platform they started in, sweating and a little winded. “And that concludes our tour of Mini-Mistral!” Akko said, before she sat down, reached for the box of snacks and water they had left there earlier. “So, how do you guys like my study method?”
“Well...” Diana said as she cracked open a bottle of water. “I can certainly see why it was effective for someone as active and energetic, and ah, constantly craving for variety as you, though I’m afraid we might need to find a different method—this is just too much work, space, and materials...” she muttered before she drank some water.
“Not exactly!” Ruby said as she pulled out her scroll, wrote down some new notes. “This is basically just the Mind Palace, except you construct it in real life, right?”
Diana’s eyebrows rose, she put her bottle down and looked around them. “… Huh. Now that you mention it, it is that.” She frowned. “How did I miss that…?”
“We’ll think about it later!” Ruby said, still scribbling. “What’s important is that I know how we’re probably going to miniaturize, and reduce the costs of this!”
“I’m all ears!” Akko said.
“Akko: you memorize all these facts and names by remembering the order you came across them, right?” Ruby asked. “You know that Hestia is up north because it’s after Wind Path and Hoshiko, and where all the other places are depending on what passed by first?”
“Mhmm!” Akko said. “It’s like how you know you’re close or far from home or a store—you haven’t or have crossed a street, or see one of the landmarks.”
“You know, usually, most people just construct mind palaces with their imaginations, not a simulation of it in real life...” Diana muttered.
“Ah, sorry, I was just always more the hands-on kind of learner…” Akko replied. “It’s why I really don’t like lectures and reading assignments: there’s not much for me to do!”
They spent the next few minutes in silence, either resting and catching their breaths from all the running and activity earlier, or helping Ruby brainstorm and refine her ideas.
“… And, done!” Ruby said as she slipped her quill back into her scroll. “Good news, everyone: I know how we can start experimenting with smaller versions of this now!”
“That quickly?” Diana asked. “I’m impressed.”
“Eh, mind palaces are kind of similar to the internal systems of a weapon,” Ruby said as she got up. “Just gotta figure out in which order things should happen, what goes where, and when the parts should be doing their respective jobs.
“Anyway, it’s best if we start doing our homework, so we can experiment with the material Akko will actually need to study, so team AWRD to the books...?” Ruby asked.
“To the books!” Diana and Akko said, the latter with much less enthusiasm.
Note: Do you guys think my expanding the number of settlements, cultures, and details in Mistral was too egregious? Was this too much of an info dump, and I used too little of the “advance the plot and/or show character” of the Two Main Rules of Writing?

Top Notch XiaoMi Roborock S50 S55 in Starhill Gallery
At 63.8 decibels, the Roborock S5 was clearly louder than the Shark Ion R85 (59.2). We had the ability to have a conversation as the vacuum worked around us but definitely raised our voices. Much like the app that communicates the Mi Home app, the Eufy Robovac 30C is designed to control house smart devices. While the app's vacuum section is robust, the layout isn't instinctive. We were impressed with how gently the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 seemed to announce it struck something with elastic clunk; the S5 was more polite.
Tumblr media
The robot slows its own approach and its brush before gingerly approaching an obstruction ; however, once the S5 decided an item was still approachable, it approached with gusto. The S5 pushed on chairs and dog bowl across the floor more than the Shark Ion R85 and the Neato Botvac D7. It wasn't destructive, but I would not leave a fragile vase onto a lightweight plant stand around through a cleaning. The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Don't expect to access some complex features the choices are On and Off, which prompts to bot to return to its base. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot home, as opposed to Cease, which divides the vacuum in its tracks. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8% of test debris on carpet--a performance on a par with the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar story, picking up an average of 83.9 percent of test debris. The Botvac D7 bested it by 12 percent. If you guessed the Go icon would begin a cleaning cycle, you would be wrong. Rather, Go directs the S5 to a user-chosen stage on the cleaning map for the bot to perform a spot cleaning. Activating the Clean icon initiates an overall vacuuming cycle. Buried in the Preferences menu are five distinct Cleanup modes: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The app, and by extension, the vacuum, retain the mode last used. Flip the Roborock S5 above and you're going to discover two black rubber wheels on both sides, a multi-directional wheel at front, and a side brush to the left. Between the wheels are the mix rubber and bristle roller brush. Though similar to the brush on the Eufy Robovac 30c, the S5's roller brush stayed free of hair and fuzz. Installation and app The main screen shows the area in yards, cleaning time and our item of information.
Tumblr media
Along the base are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. Exactly what the Roborock S5 lacked cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpet test area at an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, nearly a complete hour faster than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes quickly than the Shark Ion R85. It was not quite as quickly as the Neato Botvac D7, that cleaned the evaluation area at an average of 10 minutes, 22 minutes. The manual recommends running a vacuum cycle . We did so, but it did not seem to help. The S5 left the mapped area dull and somewhat tacky. When it had been possible to use something along with water in the mop tank it would have performed better. Layout  According to a Roborock representative, though the Roborock S5 uses the same app produced by Xiaomi as the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map data is saved locally on the robot and just goes into the Cloud when a user views the map on the smartphone program. Up to 20 maps are stored in the Cloud in any time and are automatically deleted after a year. When users delete a map in the program, it's also removed from the Cloud. The security firm AV-Test recently evaluated the safety of four different app-connected robot vacuums, such as the Roborock S55 and the Roomba 980. The Roborock S55 performed the worst; AV-Test explained this was"Due partly to gross security deficiencies in data transmission, the transfer of information to third parties, the program's unexplainable thirst for information, as well as a very clear need for progress in the announcement on the handling of consumer data." Notice that tabbed Saving Mode is now in beta and have to be toggled on separately under Vacuum Settings from the program. We spent several test runs re-mapping our floor due to this map not saving automatically. Both the more expensive iRobot Roomba i7+ and the Botvac D7 are able to store multiple floor plans. Despite its size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches high, the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690.
Tumblr media
While we don't adore the laser cover in the center, the characteristic was less obtrusive than the one on the D7, which has a large overhang and penchant for getting stuck under room chairs. The Roborock S5 performed nicely, but not outstandingly so. On hardwood and carpeting, it picked up an average of 96.2 percent of those Cheerios strewn throughout the test region, which was slightly less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, which scooped a perfect 100 percent with this evaluation. At this robot's middle is a laser cap using a dab of orange beneath, very similar to the one on the Neato Botvac D7. Over the cover are bodily buttons for spot cleaning, on/off and recharging. Perhaps due to the white color, the wall detectors on the front and side of the S5 are more noticeable than on other models, but they do not detract in the bot appearance. The Roborock S5 is primarily controlled via the Mi Home app (Android and iOS). Connecting the robot into the app and also to our home wi-fi network took two tries, mostly because the directions for pairing the bot into the network weren't too clear. Abstruse instructions quickly turned into a motif of this S5. "Starting the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Rather than a series of Morse code-like beeps and chimes employed by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and many other appliances, the S5 announces what it's going to do in easy-to-understand terminology prompts. Cleaning performance Security concerns You want it to look if it's docked on your living space, if you're adding a robot vacuum cleaner to your home. The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-grey color scheme embraced by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. The Roborock S5 measures 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch bigger than the Shark Ion R85; it's also bigger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7. When the Roborock S5 gets its claws, it cleaned regions in a thorough, precise, back-and-forth snake layout. The robot vacuum immediately found its way under our dining room table through the maze weaving its way to the other out of one side of the space. We appreciated how tightly the S5 hewed to walls and chair legs;it tackled walls and borders as the Neato Botvac D7. The vac was also smart enough to fully avert a thick pile rug that felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation supposed it did not fit under our seats or our low-clearance sofa. One of our favorite design elements of the Robovac S5 is its own"hood" Flip the plastic piece up and you will find the ample dustbin hidden in the center, together with a Wi-Fi index light and program reset button. The S5 was the only robot vacuum cleaner we reviewed that had an onboard space to maintain the differently easy-to-lose tool for cleaning the brush roll, a means to maintain functionality while enhancing the aesthetic. An section close to the back is supposed to hold the microfiber mop module. The black-and-white dock for the Roborock S5 is only marginally taller than the vacuum . A large, clear plastic mat attaches to the pier, but it is only needed if you're planning on using the mop attachment.
Tumblr media
Mopping performance We were reluctant to give the S5 free reign to wash if it decided to try and clean our carpet, therefore we used the spot-cleaning mode, which cleans a 1.5- meter (4.9 ft ) area around where the S5 is put. Turns our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 produced about as much water on the ground as a wet Swiffer pad. If it had cleaned as well as a Swiffer does. Picking pet hair on both the hardwood and carpet stymied many of the robot vacuums we tested, including the Roborock S5;it picked up only 79.5% of pet hair--10 percent less than the Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less than the Ion R85. However, the S5 did finest the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup rate. We're enthused about zone cleaning on the Roborock S5, as it's a wonderful way to perform a cleaning of a front hall or kitchen where there is more foot traffic. You are able to draw boxes around the map areas you want vacuumed. Contrary to the Roomba i7+ and the Neato Botvac D7, you can't save or title the zones, which means you have to redraw every time to the place that you want to clean them. Adding to the confusion is a Edit Map button on the display that allows you draw on virtual barrier cassette and no-go zones. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself with a mapping feature that's unique one of the robot vacuums we analyzed, but unfortunately, its own cleaning art is useful. A thin disk with a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides under the back of the vacuum. Fill out the dish with water, click it adjust the Cleanup manner in the program and you are ready to clean.

Amazing XiaoMi Roborock S50 S55 Mid Valley Megamall

It wasn't quite as quickly as the Neato Botvac D7, which cleaned the test region at an average of 10 minutes, 22 minutes. The guide recommends running a vacuum cycle that is regular . We did this, but it did not appear to help. The S5 left the mopped area dull and a little sticky. When it was possible to use something in addition to water in the mop tank, maybe it would have performed better. Design As per a Roborock agent, although the Roborock S5 uses the exact same program made by Xiaomi as the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map information is saved locally on the robot and just enters the Cloud when an individual views the map onto the smartphone app. Up to 20 maps are stored in the Cloud at any time and so are deleted after a year. Instead of a string of Morse code-like beeps and chimes employed by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and many modern appliances, the S5 announces what it is likely to perform in easy-to-understand language prompts. When the Roborock S5 gets its bearings, it cleaned areas in a detailed back-and-forth snake pattern. The robot vacuum quickly found its way beneath our dining room table through the maze , easily weaving its way to another. We appreciated how hewed to walls and around seat legs;it tackled walls and edges as closely as the Neato Botvac D7. The vac was also smart enough to completely avert a thick pile rug which felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation meant it didn't fit under our chairs or our low-clearance sofa. Among our favorite design components of this Robovac S5 is its own"hood." It's only needed if you plan on utilizing the mop attachment, although A large, clear plastic mat attaches to the dock. Mopping performance We were hesitant to provide the S5 free reign to mop if it decided to try and wash our rug, so we utilized the spot-cleaning mode, which sheds a 1.5- meter (4.9 ft ) area around where the S5 is put. Turns out our hesitations were unfounded.

Adding to the confusion is an Edit Map button on the display which lets you draw on barrier cassette and no-go zones. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself using a mapping quality that's unique one of the robot vacuums we tested, but unfortunately, its own cleaning art is helpful. A thin, half-moon-shaped disc using a microfiber pad resides under the back of the vacuum. Fill the dish using water, click it in, adjust the Cleanup mode and you are ready to clean.

Awesome XiaoMi Roborock S50 S55 Lot 10 Discount
Flip the Roborock S5 over and you're going to discover two rubber wheels on both sides, a multi-directional wheel at front, and a side brush to the leftside. Between the wheels are the combination rubber and bristle roller brush. Though similar to the brush on the Eufy Robovac 30c, the S5's roller brush stayed remarkably free of hair and fuzz. Design The security company evaluated the security of four distinct robot vacuums, such as the Roborock S55 and the Roomba 980. The Roborock S55 performed the worst; AV-Test said that this was"Due partly to gross security deficiencies in data transmission, the transport of data to third parties, the program's unexplainable thirst for data, in addition to a very clear need for improvement in the announcement on the handling of customer data." As per a Roborock representative, though the Roborock S5 employs the exact same program made by Xiaomi since the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map information is stored locally on the robot and only enters the Cloud when a user views the map on the smartphone program.
Tumblr media
Up to 20 maps are saved in the Cloud at any time and are deleted after a year. When users delete a map it's also removed in the Cloud. Exactly what the Roborock S5 lacked in cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpeting test region at an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, almost a full hour faster than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes quickly compared to Shark Ion R85. It was as quickly as the Neato Botvac D7, that cleaned the test area at an average of 10 minutes, 22 seconds. We were enthused about zone cleaning to the Roborock S5, since it is a great way to perform a daily cleaning of a hall or kitchen where there is more foot traffic. You are able to draw boxes around the map regions you need vacuumed. Contrary to the Roomba i7+ and also the Neato Botvac D7, you can't save or title the zones, which usually means you have to redraw the place every time you want to clean them. Adding to the confusion is an Edit Map button on the display which allows you draw virtual barrier cassette and no-go zones. One of our favorite design components of this Robovac S5 is its own"hood." Flip up the plastic piece that is and you will find the dustbin hidden in the middle, along with a index light and system reset button.
Tumblr media
The S5 was the only real robot vacuum we reviewed that had an onboard space to hold the tool for cleaning the brush roll, a means to maintain functionality while enhancing the aesthetic. An indented section near the back is meant to maintain the microfiber mop module. In 63.8 decibels, the Roborock S5 was noticeably louder than the Shark Ion R85 (59.2). We had the ability to have a conversation because the vacuum worked around us, but raised our voices. In our laboratory tests, the Roborock S5 performed nicely, but not outstandingly so. On hardwood and carpeting, it picked up an average of 96.2% of those Cheerios strewn throughout the test region, which was marginally less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, that divides up a perfect 100 percent with this test. The Roborock S5 steps 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch bigger than the Shark Ion R85; it is also larger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7. Setup and app We were hesitant to give the S5 free reign to mop in case it decided to try and clean our rug, therefore we utilized the spot-cleaning mode, which sheds a 1.5- meter (4.9 feet) area around where the S5 is placed. Turns our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 made about as much water on the ground. If it had cleaned as well as a Swiffer does.
Tumblr media
Security concerns Picking pet hair on both hardwood and carpet stymied many of the robot vacuums we tested, including the Roborock S5;it picked up only 79.5% of pet hair--10 percent less compared to Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less compared to Ion R85. However, the S5 did best the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup rate. Mopping performance Much like the program that communicates the Mi Home app, the Eufy Robovac 30C is designed to control multiple home devices. The design isn't instinctive while the vacuum part of this app is strong. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8 percent of all test debris on carpeting --a performance on a par with all the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar tale, picking up an average of 83.9% of all test debris. It was bested by the Botvac D7 by 12 percent. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself with a mopping quality that's unique among the robot vacuums we tested, but unfortunately, its own cleaning prowess is much more of a novelty than useful. A slender disc using a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides beneath the back of the vacuum. Fill out the disc with water, click it adjust the Cleanup mode in the app and you are ready to wash. The main screen displays the area cleaning time and our item of information--staying battery life. Along the bottom are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. In the robot's center is a increased laser cap on the Neato Botvac D7 with a dab of beneath, very similar to this one. Above the cover are buttons for cleaning, on/off and recharging. Maybe due to its white colour, the wall detectors on front and side of the S5 are more conspicuous than on other versions, but they don't detract in the bot appearance.
Tumblr media
We were impressed with how the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 appeared to announce it struck something with elastic clunk; the S5 was considerably more considerate. The robot slows its own strategy and its own side brush before gingerly approaching an obstacle. The S5 pushed chairs and puppy bowl around the floor over the Shark Ion R85 and the Neato Botvac D7. It wasn't destructive, but I wouldn't leave a delicate vase onto a plant stand around during a cleanup. Once the Roborock S5 gets its bearings, it cleaned regions in a detailed back-and-forth snake pattern. The robot vacuum found its way beneath our dining room table through the maze weaving its way to another. We appreciated how hewed to walls and chair legs;it tackled walls and borders as closely as the Neato Botvac D7. The van was also smart enough to fully avoid a thick pile rug that felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation supposed it did not fit under our chairs or our low-clearance couch. Despite its size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches , the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690. While we don't adore the laser cover at the center, the feature was significantly less obtrusive than the one about the D7, that has a large overhang and penchant for getting stuck under living room seats. If you are adding your home and a robot vacuum, you want it to look good -- especially if it's docked on your living room. The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-grey color scheme adopted by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. If you guessed that the Go icon could begin a cleaning cycle, then you'd be wrong. Instead, Go directs the S5 to a point on the cleansing map for the bot to perform a place cleaning. Activating the icon starts an overall vacuuming cycle. Buried in the Settings menu are five different Cleanup modes: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The program, and by extension, the vacuum, retains the mode last used.
Tumblr media
Cleaning performance The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Don't expect to access any complex features using Alexa; the options are On and Away, which prompts to bot to return to its base. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot home, rather than Cease, which pauses the vacuum in its paths. "Starting the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Rather than a series of Morse code-like beeps and chimes utilized by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and lots of other modern appliances, the S5 admits what it's likely to perform in easy-to-understand terminology prompts. The Roborock S5 is mostly controlled through the Mi Home program (Android and iOS). Linking the robot into the app and to our home wi-fi network took 2 triesbecause the directions for pairing the bot into the Wi-Fi network weren't too clear. Instructions that were abstruse quickly turned into a recurring theme of the S5. The guide recommends running a regular vacuum cycle . We did this, but it did not seem to help. The S5 left the mapped area dull and a little tacky. If it had been possible to use something along with water from the mop tank, maybe it could have performed better. The black-and-white pier for the Roborock S5 is marginally taller than the vacuum. A large plastic mat attaches to the dock, but it is only needed if you plan on using the attachment. Note that Map Saving Mode is currently in beta and must be toggled on separately under Vacuum Settings in the program. We spent several test runs re-mapping our first floor due to the map not saving mechanically. Both the iRobot Roomba and also the Botvac D7 can store floor plans.

On hardwood and carpeting, it picked up an average of 96.2% of those Cheerios strewn throughout the test region, which was slightly less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, which scooped up a perfect 100 percent with this evaluation. The Roborock S5 steps 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch larger than the Shark Ion R85; it's also larger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7. Setup and program  We were hesitant to give the S5 free reign to mop if it decided to try and clean our rug, therefore we used the spot-cleaning mode, which cleans a 1.5- meter (4.9 ft ) area around wherever the S5 is placed. Turns our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 made about as much water as a wet Swiffer pad on the ground. If it had cleaned as a Swiffer does.
Tumblr media
Security concerns Picking pet hair on both the hardwood and carpeting stymied many of the robot vacuums we tested, including the Roborock S5;it picked up just 79.5% of pet hair--10 percent less than the Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less than the Ion R85. However, the S5 did finest the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup speed. Mopping performance Much like the program that communicates the Mi Home program, the Eufy Robovac 30C was made to control house devices. While the vacuum section of the program is robust, the layout is not instinctive. Overall, the Roborock S5 accumulated an average of 86.8% of all test debris on carpet--a performance on a level with the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar tale, picking up an average of 83.9% of test debris. It was bested by the Botvac D7 by 12 percent. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself using a mopping feature that's unique one of the robot vacuums we tested, but unfortunately, its mopping art is genuinely helpful. A half-inch thin, half-moon-shaped disk with a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides under the rear of the vacuum. Fill out the dish using water, click it in, adjust the Cleanup mode in the app and you are ready to wash. The main screen displays the most recent place cleaning time and also our favourite piece of information. Along the bottom are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. In the center of the robot is a laser cover on the Neato Botvac D7 with a dab of beneath, similar to the one. Over the cover are buttons for cleaning, on/off and recharging. Perhaps due to the white colour, the wall sensors on the front and side of the S5 are more conspicuous than on other versions, but they don't detract from the bot's understated look.
Tumblr media
We were impressed with how gently the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 appeared to announce it hit something with clunk; the S5 was more considerate. The robot slows its own approach and its own brush before gingerly approaching an obstacle. The S5 pushed on seats and puppy bowls than the Shark Ion R85 and also the Neato Botvac D7. It was not destructive, but I wouldn't leave a delicate vase onto a plant stand around through a cleaning. When the Roborock S5 gets its claws, it cleaned regions in a thorough, precise, back-and-forth snake layout. The robot vacuum found its way under our dining room table through the maze weaving its way to another from 1 side of the room. We appreciated how hewed to walls and about chair legs;it tackled walls and borders as the Neato Botvac D7. The vac was also smart enough to completely avoid a thick pile rug that felled other robot vacuums, but its taller height meant it didn't fit under one of our chairs or our low-clearance couch. Despite its size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches , the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690. While we don't love the elevated laser cover at the center, the characteristic was significantly less obtrusive than the one about the D7, which has a large overhang and penchant for becoming stuck beneath room seats. You want it to look if it's docked on your living room if you are adding a robot vacuum cleaner to your home. The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-grey colour scheme adopted by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. If you guessed that the Go icon could initiate a cleaning cycle, you'd be wrong. Rather, God directs the S5 into a point on the cleaning map for the bot to perform a place cleaning. An overall vacuuming cycle is initiated by activating the icon. Buried in the Preferences menu are five distinct Cleanup modes: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The app, and by extension, the vacuum, retains the mode last used.
Tumblr media
Cleaning performance The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Don't expect to get some advanced features using Alexa; the only options are On and Off, which prompts to bot to come back to its foundation. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot home, as opposed to Stop, which pauses the vacuum in its paths. "Starting the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Rather than a series of Morse code-like beeps and chimes employed by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and many other appliances, the S5 admits what it is going to perform in easy-to-understand terminology prompts. The Roborock S5 is mostly controlled through the Mi Home program (Android and iOS). Linking the robot to the app and also to our home wi-fi network took 2 attempts because the directions for pairing the bot into the network were not very clear. Abstruse instructions became a theme of this S5. The manual recommends running a vacuum cycle that is normal . We did so, but it didn't appear to help. The S5 abandoned the mapped area dull and a little sticky. When it had been possible to use something along with water from the mop tank it could have performed better. The black-and-white pier for your Roborock S5 is only slightly taller than the vacuum. A clear plastic mat attaches to the pier, but it is only needed if you plan on utilizing the attachment. Notice that tabbed Saving Mode is now in beta and have to be toggled on individually under Vacuum Settings from the app. We spent several test runs re-mapping our floor due to this map not saving automatically. Both the expensive iRobot Roomba and also the D7 can store multiple floor plans.

XiaoMi Roborock S50 S55 Kuala Kubu Bharu Review
According to a Roborock agent, though the Roborock S5 employs the exact same app made by Xiaomi as the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map data is saved locally on the robot, and only goes into the Cloud when an individual views the map on the smartphone app. As much as 20 maps are saved in the Cloud at any certain time, and are deleted after a year. When users delete a map it is also removed in the Cloud. Much like the app that communicates the Mi Home app, the Eufy Robovac 30C is designed to control house smart devices.
Tumblr media
The layout isn't instinctive while the vacuum section of the program is strong. Exactly what the Roborock S5 lacked cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpeting test area in an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, almost a full hour faster than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes fast compared to Shark Ion R85. It was as fast as the Neato Botvac D7, that cleaned the test region in an average of 10 minutes. Mopping performance Among our favourite design components of this Robovac S5 is its own"hood" Flip the plastic piece up and you'll find the ample dustbin concealed in the middle, along with a indicator light and system reset button. The S5 was the robot vacuum we examined that had an space to maintain the tool for cleaning the brush roll, a way to keep whilst improving the aesthetic. An indented section close to the back is meant to hold the microfiber mop module.
Tumblr media
Once the Roborock S5 gets its bearings, it cleaned areas in a exact, back-and-forth snake layout. The robot vacuum immediately found its way beneath our dining room table, easily weaving its way to the other out of 1 side of the space. We appreciated how hewed to walls and chair legs;it tackled walls and edges as the Neato Botvac D7. The van was also smart enough to completely avert a thick pile rug that felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller height meant it didn't fit under our seats or our low-clearance couch. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8% of test debris on carpet--a performance on a par with all the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar story, picking up an average of 83.9 percent of all test debris. It was bested by the Botvac D7 by 12 percent. Notice that tabbed Saving Mode is currently in beta and have to be toggled on separately under Vacuum Settings from the app.

We spent a few test runs re-mapping our floor due to this map not saving automatically. Both the expensive iRobot Roomba i7+ and also the Botvac D7 can store floor plans. The security company assessed four distinct app-connected robot vacuums' safety, including the Roborock S55 and the Roomba 980. The Roborock S55 performed the worst; AV-Test explained this was"Due partially to gross safety deficiencies in data transmission, the transport of information to third parties, the program's unexplainable thirst for data, in addition to a very clear need for progress in the announcement on the handling of consumer data." The guide recommends running a vacuum cycle that is normal within the area at least three times. We did this, but it didn't seem to help. The S5 left the mapped area dull and somewhat sticky. When it had been possible to use something along with water in the tank it could have performed better. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself using a mapping feature that's unique one of the robot vacuums we analyzed, but unfortunately, its prowess is truly helpful.

A thin disc with a microfiber pad resides under the rear of the vacuum. Fill out the disc with water, click it in, adjust the Cleanup manner in the app and you are ready to wash. If you guessed the Go icon could begin a basic cleaning cycle, then you'd be wrong. Instead, Go directs the S5 to a user-chosen point on the cleaning map for the bot to perform a place cleaning. Activating the sterile icon initiates a vacuuming cycle. Buried in the Preferences menu are five different Cleanup modes : Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The program, and by extension, the vacuum, retain the mode last used. In the middle of this robot is a laser cap around the Neato Botvac D7 with a dab of orange beneath. Above the cover are buttons for spot cleaning, on/off and recharging. Maybe due to its color, the wall sensors on front and side of the S5 are more noticeable than on other models, but they do not detract in the bot look. The Roborock S5 steps 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch bigger than the Shark Ion R85; it's also bigger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7.

Cleaning performance Picking pet hair on both the hardwood and carpet stymied many of those robot vacuums we tested, including the Roborock S5;it picked up only 79.5 percent of pet hair--10 percent less compared to Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less than the Ion R85. However, the S5 did best the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup rate. "Starting the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Instead of a series of Morse code-like beeps and chimes utilized by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and lots of other modern appliances, the S5 announces what it's likely to perform in easy-to-understand language prompts. In our lab tests, the Roborock S5 performed well, but not outstandingly so. On hardwood and carpet, it picked up an average of 96.2 percent of the Cheerios strewn across the test region, which was marginally less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, that divides up a perfect 100 percent on this test. At 63.8 decibels, the Roborock S5 was clearly louder than the Shark Ion R85 (59.2). We had the ability to have a conversation with another person in the room because the vacuum worked around us, but undoubtedly raised our voices.
Tumblr media
Security concerns The Roborock S5 is primarily controlled through the Mi Home program (Android and iOS). Connecting the robot to the app and also to our house wi-fi network took two tries, mostly because the directions for pairing the bot to the Wi-Fi network weren't too apparent. Instructions quickly turned into a motif of the S5. The black-and-white dock for your Roborock S5 is only slightly taller than the vacuum itself. It's only needed if you plan on using the mop attachment, although A large plastic mat attaches to the pier. The main screen displays the place in yards, cleaning time and also our favourite item of information. Along the base are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. Despite its size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches , the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690. Turns our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 made about as much water on the ground. If only it had cleaned as well as a Swiffer does. We're excited about zone cleaning since it is a wonderful way to perform a cleaning of a hall or kitchen where there is more foot traffic. You can draw boxes. Unlike the iRobot Roomba i7+ and the Neato Botvac D7, you can't save or title the zones, which means you need to redraw the place every time you want to wash them. Adding to the confusion is a Edit Map button on the primary screen which lets you draw virtual barrier tape and no-go zones. Installation and app Design You want it to look if it's docked in your living space, if you're adding a robot vacuum cleaner to your home.
Tumblr media
The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-grey color scheme embraced by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. But don't expect to access some features using Alexa; the only choices are On and Away, which prompts to bot to return to its foundation. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot house, as opposed to Stop, which divides the vacuum in its paths. Flip the Roborock S5 over and you'll find two rubber wheels on both sides, a multi-directional wheel at front, and a side brush to the left. Between the black wheels is the mix rubber and bristle roller brush. Though like the brush on the Eufy Robovac 30c, the S5's roller brush remained remarkably free of hair and fuzz. We were amazed with how gently the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 appeared to announce it hit something with elastic clunk; the S5 was much more considerate. The robot slows its approach and its side brush before gingerly approaching an obstacle. The S5 pushed seats and puppy bowl than the Shark Ion R85 and the Neato Botvac D7. It was not harmful, but I wouldn't leave a vase on a lightweight plant stand around during a cleanup.

According to a Roborock representative, although the Roborock S5 employs the exact same app made by Xiaomi since the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map information is saved locally on the robot, and only goes into the Cloud when a user views the map on the smartphone program. Up to 20 maps are stored in the Cloud at any given time, and so are deleted after a year. When users delete a map in the app, it's also eliminated in the Cloud. Much like the program that accompanies the Eufy Robovac 30C, the Mi Home program is designed to control multiple home devices that were smart. While the vacuum part of this app is robust, the design is not instinctive. What the Roborock S5 lacked cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpeting test region in an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, nearly a complete hour quicker than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes fast than the Shark Ion R85. The robot vacuum found its way beneath our dining room table through the maze , easily weaving its way to the other out of one side of the room. We appreciated how hewed to walls and chair legs;it tackled walls and borders as tightly as the Neato Botvac D7. The vac was also smart enough to fully avoid a thick pile rug which felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation meant it didn't fit under one of our seats or our low-clearance couch. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8 percent of all test debris on carpeting --a performance on a par with the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent.
