all pokemon games are good but they are not all equally as good
send post
#pokemon#as a person who has played pretty much every main pkmn game in some capacity#i can find things in them that are worth praise#but like obviously they can't all be the same level of good. there are so many factors to a pkmn game to be balanced#some have a great region. some have a great story. some have just a solid gameplay experience. all of them have great music lol#i could even play devil's advocate and praise bdsp for being a truly faithful remake and pretty incredible for a studio first Real game#but mainly i keep thinking like. everyone has shat on the new pkmn games ever since gen 5 especially#but then over time people are like Huh they aren't so bad after all#like once you get out of the gamehate wormhole generated by inflammatory social media posting you can appreciate a thing more#and there may still be people out there who think red/blue are the best ones. and y'know they have a point#even though objectively those games were littered with bugs to the point where some normal mechanics were not correct#and things just got more complicated and sophisticated with abilities and new types and better moves and stuff#the original games are absolute Miracles to have been made at all and for what they're worth they were Revolutionary#it was a simpler time but the ideas put forth were still pretty complex. especially considering this was the First One#this is the foundation all pokemon games thereafter rose from. and it's a pretty solid foundation despite all the hardships#anyway. i love pokemon. and i love that even after all this time - over 25 years - its spirit from back in 96 still remains in some form#it may not be about catching em all anymore. because physically that's really hard to do with over 1000 guys now#but it's still about finding joy in following a dream of adventure with a bunch of cool animal friends#and sometimes you save the world a little bit. that's p cool

Short Circuit || Jane and Winston
NB: This happened before the eye potw.
Ping. Jane swore quietly as another chat message popped up onto her computer. Admittedly, she wasn’t great with technology, but she knew how to use google like any other asshole. Except her work computer wouldn’t even let her use google. This had to be some sort of virus that Marley installed as a prank. It wouldn’t even let her force the machine to shut off and it hadn’t even run out of battery yet. Damn, she really regretted getting that replaced. She glanced over the message from KindledSpirit29.
Why won’t you talk to me :’-(
She was certain that Marley had to have done it because her user name was SexyDetective. Nope, that did it. Jane slammed the laptop closed and tucked it under her arm as she went straight for Winston. She had an appointment with them to drop it off anyway, but this was getting ridiculous. “Hey Winston,” Jane said. “Here it is. Sorry, I swear I’ve tried everything, and the stupid thing won’t even shut off properly. It just starts flashing.”
Winston had gotten permission from Roland to take the time off of work but they’d found themselves going in anyway. They’d wanted to be here with everyone else because at least then they weren’t alone with their own thoughts and they weren’t alone to crumble under Bea’s loss. Looking up, they shakily reached out and scooped up their mug of coffee and swallowed the cold dregs of it with a wince. They didn’t care enough to actually heat it up. “Hey Jane,” they said a little glumly but they could get away with acting as if they didn’t want to be at work, “don’t worry about it, from everything you’ve said to me it sounds like malware or something. I’m sure I can fix it. Let me take a look.” Winston had their recovery USB ready for this,  having all the software you needed in one place was a much more convenient way to do it. “Did you have to call yourself sexy detective though?”
Oh shit, the kid looked pretty glum. Maybe Jane should have rescheduled or bothered her nephew to help her. He may be twelve, but that kid could do way more than her any day of the week. Maybe they just didn’t want to be at work. That tracked for a lot of twenty-something year olds. Still, she handed over her laptop, and shrugged. “I hope it’s that simple.” Computers were the devil - well, not really, but sometimes it seemed like every damn update they had were meant to muck up whatever older version was on there before and just cause more trouble. She frowned, looking at them. “I didn’t! At first it said DetectiveWu but it changed! Stryder must have changed it to be annoying.” Another ping from KindledSpirit29.
Who is that? What are you doing?
Jane frowned. “Look at that. That’s creepy.”
“That is really creepy,” Winston agreed with a frown as they plugged the USB drive into a port and began running various command lines to ping different functions and see just how deep the problem lay. “You think that Marley did this?” No offence, but Winston could already see from the sophistication of the design of the chat that this was not something that someone was just going to be able to pull up. This looked like a very specifically and deliberately designed function that someone had clear plans for. “Well, DetectiveWu, or sexydetective, I mean who am I to judge?” Winston was trying to be their usual sarcastic and jovial selves but right now it was hard. “I think that the problem is that whilst this just looks like a chat it is actually something more, i’ve heard that if you can talk to the bot it can give you answers which are clues on how to turn it off. I’ve never actually tried it but my only other idea is to entirely wipe the harddrive, so we might as well try that. Have you responded to any of the messages yet?”
“You know, because of the prank war.” Jane looked over Winston’s should, watching them as they typed incoherent things onto the computer. Winston sounded like they doubted it, though. Jane frowned. “I don’t know how else it could have gotten on there, I have an airtight anti-virus on it. Or, well, it’s supposed to be an airtight antivirus…” Maybe someone had scammed her. That could always be a possibility but that was kind of annoying if that were true. Jane balked slightly when Winston said other than talking to it, the other option was to wipe her harddrive. Shit. She was sure she had a backup, but that was a lot of work. “No, I thought it was just some spam bot or something.”
I am not a spam bot! Talk to me :) Get rid of the kid.
Jane wrinkled her nose. “Okay, maybe we should wipe the harddrive. That’s really freaky. How does it know - is it using my camera??”
“Oh, right, yeah that was pretty funny for a few days although I’ve got to say you guys weren’t as imaginative as you could’ve been.” Winston didn’t want to brag but they were sure that they were more then capable of coming up with something better then the variety of pranks that Marley and Jane had played on one another. “Sometimes even if you’re really careful these things can happen, it’s fine, we can clean it up, I’d just rather not wipe everything if we can help it.” Winston examined the computer and frowned at the message. “I don’t think the camera’s on, but just in case.” They pulled a piece of masking tape off and firmly stuck it over the camera. “We can wipe it if you really want, but it’ll get rid of everything you’ve got on there, so if anything isn’t backed up….”
“Are you saying I lack imagination,” Jane said, a grin growing on her face. Bold kid, funny too. “I thought the popcorn filled office space was imaginative.” And really annoying to clean up. “What would you have done  if you were in a prank war?” She was still considering gluing Sarge’s stuff to the ceiling. Or at the very least, paw patrol’s stuff to the ceiling. Maybe not the skulls though, he seemed a little too creepily attached to them. She watched as Winston stuck a piece of tape to the camera. “My father has a stamp stuck to his at home. Used to tell me big brother was always watching.” Jane considered a moment, before shaking her head. “Alright, alright. We can try responding to it.” Jane reached over, pulling the computer a little closer so she could type. What should she say?
SexyDetective: How do I remove this from my computer?
KindledSpirit: YOU WANT TO GET RID OF ME?! YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW ME YET!
There screen flashed. “Ah! See, this is what happens when I try to emergency shut down!!”
“The popcorn stuff was very freaks and geeks,” Winston replied with a shrug, “I’m not saying that it wasn’t cool. It was. I just think you could’ve been more imaginative. Besides, did you think that Marley’s computer just started playing a Nic Cage soundboard spontaneously?” Winston shrugged gently. Getting involved in the unfolding prank war hadn’t been something that they had been planning but it was something that they had been roped into by Sarge and Winston couldn’t say no to him. “I mean, they can gain access to your camera, normally you don’t have to but I guess there’s no harm in always having one there and just taking it off when you need it. Winston watched everything that unfolded and frowned. “That’s weird, maybe ask it if you can get to know it in person? Worst comes to the worst you arrest a creep right?”
“That was you?” Jane said. “She thought that was me! Ha! That’s hilarious,” Jane snickered. She didn’t know what the deal was with Nic Cage, but there was something about his face that and over all vocal intonations that made him especially annoying. God, when did she get to be a Nic Cage Hater? “I’ve had a few cases like that - back when I worked in Portland,” she told Winston. “Where people would gain access to the camera in a computer to spy and be overall disgusting.” Her nose wrinkled, and she didn’t elaborate farther. “You think this is a real person and not some… artificial intelligence?” Ping! Jane looked at that screen.
I am not artificial intelligence!
Jane frowned. “Can it… hear us too? I didn’t even know my computer had a microphone. Stop that!”
You don’t like me! It accused them.
The screen started to flash again, and she swore she saw something spark. Jane placed a hand on Winston’s shoulder. “Uhhh, I think we should get away from it. I think it’s broken.”
“Technically, and you can’t tell anyone, but Sarge actually asked me to do it, not sure why. I don’t really ask questions when your boss asks you to do something like that.” Frowning gently, Winston shrugged. “There’s a chance that this is a bot or something like that, but AI doesn’t really exist to a level that is sophisticated enough to think independently. At least, not yet. Maybe in the future but not currently.” Winston shrugged and squinted at the screen. Winston reached out and placed their hand on the computer, reaching out with magic and examining it to the best of their ability. Interacting with technology like this was complicated. But it was something they were getting used to. Something felt wrong here, and Winston frowned as a new set of messages flashed up on the screen.
“What are you doing?” Jane asked as Winston reached out, putting their hand on the screen. “Winston, I don’t think you should -” More messages flashed up onto the excreen, and from what she could see there was a series of expletives. The computer’s charging port sparked. “Winston, get away from the computer right now.” Jane’s voice turned authoritative as she realized it was dangerous. She didn’t want them to get hurt. Jane was just considering the pros and cons of firing her weapon at the laptop in the precinct, but didn’t get the chance to think further when the laptop flew off the desk and crashed into the wall. Jane stopped and stared at the empty spot where her laptop was, before looking to where the broken pieces were on the floor. “What the hell was -”
A burst of electricity was coming from the broken pieces. Sparking in strange ways. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. “Winston,” Jane said, slowly. “Get…. behind me?”
“It’s just a … trick that my tutor taught me,” Winston lied unconvincingly. It was a flaw that until recently they’d been proud of, being unable to lie had never really been a huge problem until now. Now that they were risking their life on their inability for deception more and more however they were starting to think that they might have to get better at it. “Ah, Jane what’s the plan here?” Winston asked as they obligingly stepped behind Jane. “I’m not sure that shooting your laptop because it’s threatening to pretend to be an EMP is really going to help…” Winston’s mind was racing as they did everything that they possibly could to think of a way to fix this without magic. “You ever seen anything weird like this before?” Winston really hoped that Jane was one of the cops that was cool with the supernatural because otherwise they were going to be a bit concerned by all of this. “I can definitely do something about this but if you’ve got a better idea I’m all ears.”
“I’ve seen some strange things, yes,” Jane said, glancing back at them. She hadn’t exactly seen anything like this before, with the flashing and sparking for the laptop getting worse. “Speaking of ears - cover your ears.” Jane said flatly. She drew her gun and swiftly shot the laptop 3 times in a row. The laptop shattered into more pieces, a loud whirring voices coming from nothing. She didn’t understand, shooting it should have worked. It was probably overkill, but come on, it was just a goddamn laptop! What was it, a laptop zombie? Wait. Jane stopped, frowning as she lowered her gun. Electric zombie? Were electric zombies things? Was it an electric zombie that was trying to be her friend? She just barely got the thought out when the damn thing, whatever it was, tried to attack. A flash of electricity had Jane jerking backwards, elbowing Winston out of the blast. “Sorry. Sorry. Crap. Okay, so my method didn’t work. Maybe we should get the fire extinguisher? What the hell is that thing? It’s definitely not a zombie.”
She shot it anyway. Great. Anything that Winston might have been able to do might as well now be useless. “I was being nice when i said I wasn’t sure it was going to help, now what are we meant to do?” Winston frowned gently however at the fact that it was still sparking as if it might explode at literally any minute. This was not what they had expected when there had been a problem with the chat. “You know about zombies?” Winston asked frowning, maybe Jane wasn’t one of the people who were completely oblivious to the supernatural anyway. “That definitely isn’t a zombie, I don’t know what it is but I would guess some sort of spectre from all the electricity and the sparking and the fact that you shot it and it’s just freaking out even more.” The laptop began levitating. “I am not an exorcist, but I have an idea, I need you to and seriously be really super careful, but grab a chair, break it so you’re holding a bit of wood and when I tell you I need you to hit it out of the air and then maybe I’ll be able to get it to stop freaking out for long enough for us to get a professional in here to deal with it.” Winston looked at Jane expectantly, “Okay?”
“Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time,” Jane said, frowning. She had hoped that destroying it would prevent it from doing anything else, but guess not. “I do know about zombies.” Jane replied back, happy enough that her hair was blocking the scar on her neck. She was more than a little concerned that the kid seemed to know about zombies too. “Spectre?” Jane was immediately reminded of the stupid step stool her and Marley had trapped in a dog cage in her living room. How irritating, had something gotten her work laptop too? “I have some familiarity with those too, just not this. There isn’t any salt in the breakroom is there?” Jane muttered, more to herself than Winston, as she went to swiftly break a chair into two. She supposed that she was going to have to trust them. Sorry to whoever’s chair that was, but if there weren't exactly many other options. She grabbed the chair leg and nodded. “Let me know when you’re ready. And be careful.”
“Yeah, I get that,” Winston honestly had seriously considered buying a hand gun until someone had told them that they were a literal human handgun. Not that that had made them feel better, but sometimes you wanted to shoot something dead. “You do?” Winston was a little surprised. They kind of just assumed no one else knew. Maybe that was a mistake. Their own ignorance getting the better of them in this case. “Uh, salt is a good idea in case this doesn’t work, I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to encase the computer in salt or iron to keep the ghost in there until we can get an exorcist out here, I’m just hoping this will work for a bit, like a bandage.” Winston cracked their knuckles and took a deep breath, ready for action. “Whenever you’re ready,” as Jane smacked the chair down onto the laptop Winston darted forward and to their pleasure and extreme displeasure they caught the still sparking laptop. Fortunately they had a spell planned for this, unfortunately the energy wasn’t exactly something that they had planned on. Wincing as they smelled the electricity burn their hair, Winston extended their will into the technology as they had before, it felt completely different from any other magic Winston had ever used. The electricity coursing through them and the laptop as if it were blood in a vast circulatory system, pumped onwards by a beating heart. Groaning with exertion, Winston forced everything quiet, the electricity stalling to a halt before disappearing momentarily, though Winston knew it would be back. “Oh, fuck,” they muttered before collapsing to their knees.
“I do.” Jane made a note to rush for the breakroom after Winston did whatever they were about to do to grab the Morton’s salt she knew was in there somewhere. She wondered if Marley was also allergic to iron too, since she avoided salt. Things to take note of and ask later. Now she waited for Winston to give her the signal and she swung the the chair leg hard down onto the laptop. “Winston, no!” Jane just about rushed forward to yank the possessed, broken-beyond-repair laptop out of their hands, when she realized they were actually doing something. Jane froze, staring at them like they had many heads. “What are you - oh -” The electricity in the air seemed to disappear as the vague smell of burnt hair filled the air. Shit. What the hell was that kid doing? She was reminded, as Winston fell to their knees, of when Otto had saved her from falling off that cliff. She shook it off, running to their side. “Winston? Are you alright? What the hell did you do to it? Here, come on, let me help you up.” She would take them to the breakroom, stick a snack in front of them, and then run back to dump salt on the computer and lock it away in a filing cabinet.
“Woah,” Winston replied somewhat slurred. That had taken a lot out of them. They were really feeling light headed. They were sure that their vision didn’t normally swim in and out like that, and there weren’t normally dots in front of their eyes. Don’t fuck with electricity and magic. Seemed to be the lesson. “I’m -” they took a breath, “okay I think…” frowning gently, Winston accepted Janes help and staggered over to the table they’d previously been working at, riffling haphazardly through their bag they pulled a candy bar from it and ripped it open, biting into it. “Sorry,” they said through a mouthful of chocolate, “it really took a lot more out of me then I thought it would…” wiping sweat from their forehead they looked at the laptop, “Breakroom?” they asked, “we need to salt that and I need more food if I’m going to be able to drive home. I don’t really want to get my room mate to pick me up because of ma- exhaustion again.” Had they really just said the word magic in front of Jane?
“Are you sure?” Jane said, doubtfully as she practically carried Winston back to the table. She leaned back against it, examining them as they grabbed the chocolate bar. “What exactly did you - oh. Right. Here, stay right there.” Jane left their side for just a few minutes. It took her a bit to find where the giant thing of salt she had gotten too, and she swiped her lunch box from from the refrigerator as well. Lucky for Winston, she was planning on working overtime tonight, which meant she had packed a lunch and a dinner. Maybe a little less lucky, she really had only made a roasted chicken sandwich along with a thing of chips for dinner. Not exactly her most spectacular display of cooking. She came back, sliding her lunch box in front of him. “Do you eat meat?” she asked, worriedly. “Eat that, if you do. It’s just a roasted chicken sandwich. I’ll deal with the laptop. I figure I’ll empty out a drawer, line it with salt, dump salt on the actual laptop, and then stick it in there. It shouldn’t be able to get out after all that.” Jane knelt down on her knees and immediately went to work doing just that. She would question Winston  when they were feeling a bit better. She had caught their ‘ma-exhaustion’ slip up, but maybe now wasn’t an appropriate time to grill them.
“I’m sure, I -” Winston was so far from sure what the next appropriate thing for them to say in this instance was, they were 100% certain that a trained officer like Jane wouldn’t have missed the fact that they had always said magic, “it has happened before and I am bad at managing my blood sugar levels because I sometimes forget to eat,” they had forgotten breakfast, “so I am sure that this won’t be the last time that it happens either.” Winston looked at her food sadly and sighed. “Are you sure? I don’t want to eat your food if you haven’t got anything else…” deciding that it was that or passing out, Winston slowly bit into the sandwich and chewed on it thoughtfully. “That’s probably a good idea,” Winston looked around, “I am going to buy an iron lined box next time, I think that if another ghostly thing tries to attack me then I’m going to be pissed, because that really wasn’t my idea of fun.” They looked up at Jane. “I don’t think you missed the laptop once though, which is cool, Sarge would not be happy about bullet holes in the wall.”
“Right. Blood sugar levels,” Jane said in that type of tone that meant she didn’t believe them. She used that a lot in interrogation, but she still maintained that interrogating Winston on whatever they had done to the laptop that had caused that level of exhaustion. For the second time, she was reminded of Otto and his bloody nose. Ma-exhaustion… Magic. Hm. Noted for a later conversation  - at least until they had eaten her dinner. “Oh, don’t worry about it, I just feel bad I didn’t cook anything exceptionally yummy other than a chicken sandwich.” Jane opened a drawer, and took everything out before she started lining it with salt. “If you had told me this kind of thing existed a few years ago, I would have laughed my ass off at you,” she muttered. She glanced at them as she grabbed the broken pieces of the computer and carefully put them in the drawer, careful not to break the salt line. “I have great aim, usually. I’m sure Sarge will get on my ass about the paperwork I’m going to have to fill out about the three shots I fired into it in the precinct.” She laughed. “Or the paperwork I’m going to have to submit to get my laptop replaced. Are you attacked by ghostly entities often? You wouldn’t happen to know an exorcist would you? I have a possessed step stool at home that I’ve affectionately named French Fry, but it unfortunately very much wants to kill me.”
It didn’t take a world class detective to tell that Winston had been rumbled by Jane. But unfortunately Winston was exhausted and drained and not really thinking about how clearly it was that they had used magic. In fact, they would silently congratulate themselves on their subtlety after. “Well, if we ever have to do this again I’ll make sure that you make me a full meal, I’m joking really, my room mate Ricky is the best cook I’ve ever lived with outside of my own mother and he usually keeps me pretty … you know sorted.” Winston nodded along as they finished the sandwich. “If you had told me this six months ago then I would have joined you and the worst thing is that I have been in White Crest my whole life and never ever seen anything like this. I guess I was just ignorant or in denial? Who knows.” They smiled and nodded. “You really do have great aim, but if you want I’ll try and get your paperwork through without getting anyone who’s too much of a stick in the mud to sign off on it, I have my ways you know.” They paused for a second. “Yeah, I know several exorcists. One is more reliable but I haven’t heard from her in a while and the other I haven’t heard such good things about.”
Jane grinned. “Well, I do like to cook - I’ve been told most of my food is pretty great. Sounds like you have a great roommate, though. Good to see kids not relying on instant ramen.” She thought of Dario then, a grown ass man relying on instant ramen, and then of Sarge and his lean cuisines. God, she should teach a cooking class or something, this was pathetic. She looked at Winston. It was clear that they were far more in the know than she originally anticipated, zombies and ghosts and magic and who knows what else. “I couldn’t imagine growing up here,” she said with a frown. “I’ve always been more of a city person, but I swear this small town is more active than Portland ever was - it’s hard to see a whole town so wrapped up in denial.” She stood, brushing the salt off her pants. “If you could do that, I’d owe you definitely more than a sandwich. I’m still new, and I don’t want to cause too much trouble trouble, you know? I’ll take both exorcists names, though, they’ll probably take French Fry off my hands.”
“I have the best room mates actually,” Winston replied with a shrug, “ I guess that I just really lucked out with them or something like that. Otherwise, yeah, I’d be relying on instant ramen or just going home for dinner every night or something like that.” Winston shrugged gently and smiled. They were blessed in someways. “Believe me, I couldn’t imagine growing up in a city and I don’t think that I will ever leave now that I know the truth about this place because there is way too much shit going on to do that, like I think if I did leave I would come back and there would just be nothing left of this place.” Winston shrugged gently. “I need to … check that they don’t mind me giving out their names, I assume that they won’t and I can’t imagine that it’ll be an issue but once they’re fine with it then I’ll put you guys in contact, it’s just the whole supernatural thing is complicated with ‘outting’ people.” Winston stood and glanced at their watch. “I’ll get your new laptop ready tomorrow, is it okay if I head home? I’m pretty exhausted…”

T1J -  How Patience with People Makes the World Better
Summary: “People don't get "woke" overnight. Sometimes we have to be patient and help them get there.“
Transcript below:
Text on screen: Whenever you actually put together something that works, it’s always complicated. It’s always messy… it’s never what the little Twitter crowd is talking about.”  -Van Jones
Sometimes it's hard to comprehend other people's ideas. We just can't imagine how and why some people believe the things they do. The correct view is so obvious to us and we either assume that people are just lost and will never change their mind or that we can somehow change their mind and convince them to do a complete mental 180. Both of these are possible, but neither really reflect how most people actually are people are. People are usually hesitant to flat-out admit that they were wrong but we can add nuance to someone's view by offering a different perspective. The problem is that we sometimes think people should naturally understand things in the same way that we do so, we're confused when they aren't very receptive to our ideas. If you're trying to teach your old racist grandma who grew up during Jim Crow about racial microaggressions, it's likely that she's not going to be eye to eye with you. (sarcastically:) Get it together grandma!
It's possible that it's a lost cause, but maybe you can find an alternate route towards getting her to understand. The fact of the matter is sometimes you have to meet people where they are rather than demanding that they catch up to you.
Hi, I'm T1J.
Speaking very generally, there are at least two types of social justice advocates on the internet. There are people who work with others to discuss effective solutions to the problems that society faces. And on the other hand there are people who don't seem to be really interested in actually solving problems, and just kind of want to express their frustration and call people out. Now in many ways that frustration is valid and justifiable, but in my opinion you shouldn't expect angry confrontation to lead to very much actual progress. But if you're just here to just sort of yell at people then carry on I guess. But this video isn't really for you. This video is for that first group: people that actually want to find solutions to both societal and personal conflicts.
I think a lot of us have this delusion that we're gonna convince other people to just suddenly wake up, like they're gonna have a light switch flipped in their brain overnight and come to realize that we were right all along, and then they'll join us on the frontline marching for freedom. And then we have this principled stubbornness where it's like, “Well, if they can't understand that they're wrong then fuck ‘em, the people who are right will win in the end anyway, they'll just have to be on the wrong side of history.” And it's true that some people have no interest in being informed or expanding their perspective but it's also true that some people just haven't been engaged properly. And I believe that the world seems to slowly get more progressive over time, but I feel like proper advocacy involves doing our best to make our world a little bit better for this generation, not just future ones, and that's got to involve getting out there and touching people's hearts and minds. But everybody is on a different step in their journey towards enlightenment. Some people need just a little nudge in the right direction while others probably need to be tossed a larger bone.
I'll toss YOU a larger bone. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
So for example a thing that you often hear is you should respect women because that woman is someone's mother or daughter or wife, etc and this is kind of obnoxious because it's like you should respect women because in addition to being wives and daughters and mothers they're also people and they don't deserve to be mistreated. Like, you shouldn't have to invoke familial relationship to a woman in order to understand why you shouldn't be shitty to them. And that is 100% true but if the goal is getting people to appreciate and respect women and an effective context in which we can convince people to do that is reminding them of their relationships with the women in their own family, I feel like you should take the small victory. Not everyone is going to gain a sophisticated insight overnight. Sometimes we have to let people use training wheels until they catch up and if we create this culture where anything less than perfection causes you to be dismissed and dragged regardless of your intentions, that just seems to be a very good way to alienate potential allies. Which, if your goal is progress is not what you want to be doing.
A couple months ago there was a viral video on Twitter of this guy who was protesting outside of a Roy Moore rally. By the way, shoutout to my home state of Alabama for not electing that creepy douchebag. But anyway this guy was protesting Roy Moore's homophobic remarks in honor of his gay daughter who had committed suicide. In the video he implies that at one point he didn't accept his daughter's homosexuality. (Man in video:) “I was anti-gay myself. I said bad things to my daughter myself, which I regret.” The video is very moving, in my opinion, and I'm kind of even getting emotional thinking about it, and it got a very positive response. But I did see a bunch of comments talking about how shitty it is that a gay person had to die before they were recognized as legitimate, and I mean, that's a fair point, but first of all: this is a grieving father, like back up for a minute. Secondly this guy has probably lived his whole life in a homophobic environment and it took something tragic to get him to reconsider his views. It's terrible that he had to go through that but he's on the verge of a breakthrough. This is not the time to antagonize him.
He's probably not going to be marching with rainbow flags anytime soon but he can share his story with his community and help bridge the gap. He could tell his friends to chill out when they're using homophobic slurs or making shitty jokes. He could be a friend to closeted people down at the farm in Wicksburg, Alabama. I don't know if he's gonna do any of these things; I'm just saying he's less likely to if we immediately dogpile him for not being woke enough.
So here's my thing: I understand that a lot of this is just wacky people on social media being mean just for the sake of doing it. One of the biggest lessons that I've learned is that Twitter doesn't necessarily reflect the actual state of our society and our movement in reality. But I do think that there's a notable segment of activists both on and offline who claim to want progress and change, but seem to be more concerned with dismissing people they deemed to be not on their level than they are with actually trying to help people get there. And like I said, if that's what you want to do, I think that's unfortunate but it's not really my place to tell you not to. I just don't think it does anything. In fact, it's probably actively harmful to the movement.
And again, some people clearly have no intention of engaging ideas in good faith or considering the possibility that they might be wrong about something, and it's actually important for us to develop the ability to identify when that's happening so we don't waste time arguing with brick walls. The willingness to open ourselves to new ideas is a step that we all have to take on our own. No one can force us to do that. But at the same time we can help people find their way to that door if we're a little more patient and take the time to meet them where they are in their path towards understanding.

Hercules VS Xena: Striking differences
If you want the defining difference between Xena and Hercules… it’s actually not so much to do with feminism or gender representation. Those are the finer details, sure. But from a first-look standpoint, it’s that Xena is made for audiences that can understand and relate to its depth in production and writing of the emotional and mental kind, and Hercules is made for audiences who enjoy the writing and production of the physical kind. The action and the excitement. Of course, you get both with both shows, but you can tell one is more geared to one side than the other side. And I think the shows grew with the audience rather than the other way around. The stories got deeper and darker and much more complicated the more the audience tuned in and asked for what they wanted to see and hear of more. Therefore, I have to bring up the striking differences between both shows. If you want a show with good characters that only do good, watch Hercules. If you want a show with good characters that fluctuate, watch Xena. Redemption is a huge part of ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. There are many episodes that deal with the themes of redemption and reconciliation that are very powerful. The main character, Xena, never quite is of one side or the other side. She’s both and she comes to reconcile with both. As does those that love her and believe in her. She comes to be in balance with light and with dark, with good and with evil, with peace and with war. And it’s not just her that does either. Many of the characters in Xena deal with these themes in very different ways. From the few episodes I’ve bothered to watch, ‘Hercules: The Legendary Journeys’ doesn’t have that. It’s because the characters are innately good that there’s no depth, no complication, and no moral standing of which to learn from. I’m not saying it’s not an entertaining show. I mean, it’s action-packed, there’s lots of fight scenes and there are interesting characters that do deal with important issues. However, it doesn’t seem convincing because it lacks the negative sides of those issues. Avoids telling the darker stories and therefore, you can’t take it seriously enough. I’m not being hater; I’m just being honest. In my personal opinion, the better show is Xena because it’s just got so much more to it. It’s a lot more mature and intelligent. It’s catered to an older audience than Hercules is. Requiring a broader and expanded consciousness so that the serious and important matters can be understood. Children can watch it, but it is more for the adults I’d say, or at least young adults. However, many of its fans did watch it as a child. Shaping their world view and philosophy as they grew into an adult, and eventually coming to understand what they were watching. I’m no different to that. That is very much my background with the show as well. As I watch it as an adult, I acknowledge, consider and understand its themes and lessons so much so more than I ever did as a child. That’s why I’m saying Xena is meant for an older audience and Hercules is meant for a younger audience.
I remember reading this interview segment in a Tumblr post awhile back where Kevin Sorbo talked about Xena and what he believed was wrong with it. Two themes were mentioned, seemingly “issues” to him. He said that the violence and the lesbianism were the aspects of the show that were “issues”. I think the word he was really looking for is “controversial”. Xena is a more complex and sophisticated show and it used violence to make the point clear that goodness, righteousness and peace is not black and white. It’s very difficult to not result to violence in dire situations. They were not encouraging violence. They were using it to teach a lesson, as well as explaining that just because you do result to violence in certain circumstances, you’re not inherently a violent person. You just did what you believed you should do in the moment and that that’s okay. The violence and the darker themes to the show made those lessons all the more powerful and inspiring. As for the lesbianism… I can see why that would have been an actual “issue”. Consider that at that time, even multi-cultural and interracial heterosexual couplings was still very new to mainstream TV. They were pushing boundaries with that alone, never mind homosexual couplings. I think the producers and writers did the best they could with it. Overall, Sorbo’s views are very one-sided and he wasn’t thinking about the bigger picture. Which is that you can’t have the positive themes without the negative themes if you are to understand the importance of them. That’s what he didn’t realize and failed to mention in that interview. The point to this post is not to compare or judge or criticize. It’s to explain to people that if they want to understand the way life works and learn how to handle it, they’re better off watching the more mature, intelligent and darker show than the one that avoids those themes altogether. Furthermore, all the really interesting characters in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ are the ones that are “searching”. This showcases that it’s human conditions and conflicts that make for really great TV entertainment. People love characters they can relate to for their flaws and mistakes rather than their heroism. It’s definitely a huge factor as to why Xena stands the test of time and became more successful and popular than its predecessor, Hercules. That within this action/fantasy show, there were these themes and lessons that make it far more than just “the hero that saves the innocent”. That there is strong and substantial material that goes far deeper than the surface. So much so that you actually start to enjoy the show for its comedy and lighter episodes; such as ‘A Day In The Life’ and ‘Been There, Done That’. You begin to crave them when you realize just how dramatic and intense this show can be sometimes. It really adds to its vibe. The camp is something both Xena and Hercules is well known for. The exaggeration, the subtext, the homoerotic nature of the characters etc… However, I personally think for Xena, it propelled the show, but with Hercules, it degraded it. And that’s mainly because in Hercules, there wasn’t enough balance. The scales tipped more towards the silly and the satirical. Because of this, the drama and the tenser sides to the show didn’t feel honest or serious. Whereas in Xena, it did because it was not afraid to go in-depth with the darker side to the show. It made the audience question the characters and the storylines.
Okay, so getting on to the finer details of having gender representation, I’d like to explain another reason why I believe Xena was more popular and successful than Hercules was. They always tried to make Hercules “the man”. Had to consistently point out his masculinity and physical strength and ability to catch the female eye. They wrote the character as if he had to be a certain way to be the good person or the right person. Whereas with Xena, there wasn’t any of that. Xena was a woman who had all those so-called “masculine” traits while still being female. A female that could do anything a male could do… or in some cases… better than a male could do them. She had the physical strength of ten men combined. She wasn’t written to look or be like “the man” in particular. But because the traits and skills she had were more known for a man to be capable of than a woman in those times… she was stereotyped as a more of a masculine character than a feminine one. At least to me it seemed she was viewed that way. In my personal opinion (I’m not saying they were trying to make it look this way), Xena was the one that carried more feminine energy and Gabrielle was the one that carried more masculine energy. But that’s just my personal perspective. I have my reasons to think and believe that and to interpret those characters’ energies like that.
Before you get me wrong, I’m not saying that it’s just about female representation. It’s not just about showing these fluid traits in females. It’s not all about feminism! I’ll point out that in an episode of Xena, there is a female character that hated men. That blamed men for all their problems. That was always making them at fault for everything… just because they were men. But the show producers/writers gave the very clear message that it’s not always men at all. That sometimes a woman can be just as cruel and selfish and hard. That it could go both ways and women can abuse and misuse men just as much as men can abuse and misuse women. That there’s no “more or less than” between them. It depended on the situation that the characters were in than on the individual character’s gender or type. That very much stood out for me when watching Xena. From what I’ve seen of Hercules, (which isn’t very much, I’ll admit) it seemed to be that the women were always depicted as the dainty, soft and sweet little things that were always falling all over the men and didn’t have a bad bone in their body. And that the men were always the strong, capable, physical and abusive ones. Again, don’t get me wrong! I’m very aware it can be like that. But it’s not always like that. It’s just a stereotype. A stereotype is where if you see a certain characteristic or behaviour in one or two people, you immediately assume or interpret everyone to be in that same mentally constructed category that just doesn’t exist. It’s just not a realistic picture to paint of either gender or type of person because humans are very fluid in their energies. Xena showed the times when men could be the soft, compassionate and kind type of person. It also showed when women could be the cruel, selfish and hard type of person. There was no “she’s masculine” or “he’s feminine”. They weren’t trying to give the depiction that you’re either one or the other and it has to be that way. They were saying that it was both. That females have what is considered “masculine” traits and males have what is considered “feminine” traits and none of it was wrong or inappropriate. It made the statement that whether male or female… they were still the same species. They were still human. In fact, they didn’t only show it with humans. They showed it with the Olympian gods too. With immortals. Not necessarily considered human but shown in the human image. From my perspective, at least, I would say that’s a very strong and substantial reason to watch the show; Xena, over the show; Hercules, or to judge on what show was better produced/written, even if it was the same people that created and worked on both shows. Because it seems to me that one was definitely much more thought out than the other in producing and writing. Xena has definitely shown me what it is that I look for in TV shows/movies/books/games or other forms of entertainment and art. Good producing/writing and dynamic characters that are not stereotyped. That do not belong to any particular category or labelled in any solid or permanent way. Characters that are fluid and interchangeable and versatile. Characters like Xena and Gabrielle and Callisto, that can make you see the individual person in both positive and negative ways, enough to realize that they are completely human and real. Enough to be relatable and so you can resonate with their mindsets. I don’t understand how or why there is such striking differences between these shows. Because given the fact Kevin Sorbo didn’t play Hercules and the show was at the same level of producing/writing as Xena, I probably would have loved to watch it just as much, if not more. There were some potentially great characters (both male and female) from Hercules that weren’t introduced in Xena that could have done with a better or longer arc, so you could get to know them more and could see that they weren’t produced/written in a stereotypical way. Maybe I’m wrong. Perhaps both shows have dynamic characters and give the same messages and I just haven’t done enough research or watched enough of the other show to judge accurately. But this is only my personal perspective and opinion on both shows regardless. I’m not saying it is fact because both shows are left to interpretation anyway. Take out of it what you will. I think I’ve made a satisfactory analysis to draw from to create your own. I’d very much like to read or hear yours.
"Hercules is the hero we hope is out there. Xena is the hero we hope is in all of us." - Liz Friedman, executive producer for 'Xena: Warrior Princess'.

Open-Source App Lets Anyone Create a Virtual Army of Hackintoshes
The average person probably doesn’t think of MacOS as … scalable. It’s intended as a desktop operating system, and while it’s a very functional operating system, Apple generally expects it to run on a single piece of hardware.
But as any developer or infrastructure architect can tell you, virtualization is an impressive technique that allows programmers and infrastructure pros to expand reach and scale things up far beyond a single user. And a Github project that has gotten a bit of attention in recent months aims to make MacOS scalable in ways that it has basically never been.
Its secret weapon? A serial code generator. Yes, just like the kind you sheepishly used to get out of paying for Windows XP or random pieces of shareware back in the day. But rather than generating serials for software, Docker-OSX has the ability to generate serial codes for unique pieces of MacOS hardware, and its main developer, an open-source developer and security researcher who goes by the pseudonym Sick Codes, recently released a standalone serial code generator that can replicate codes for nonexistent devices by the thousands. Just type in a command, and it will set up a CSV file full of serial codes.
“You can generate hundreds and thousands of serial numbers, just like that,” Sick Codes, who used a pseudonym due to the nature of his work, said. “And it just generates a massive list.”
Why would you want this? Easy—a valid serial code allows you to use Apple-based tools such as iMessage, iCloud, and the App Store inside of MacOS. It’s the confirmation that you’re using something seen as valid in the eyes of Apple.
Previously, this process was something of guesswork. Hackintosh users have long had this problem, but have basically had to use guesswork to figure out valid serial codes so they could use iMessage. (In my Hackintoshing endeavors, for example, I just went on the Apple website and … uh, guessed.) Sick Codes said he developed a solution to this problem after noticing that the serials for the client would get used up.
“In the Docker-OSX client, we were always in the same serials,” he said in an interview. “Obviously, no one can log into iMessage that way.”
But when he looked around to see how others were coming up with unique ways to generate product serials, he found more myth than reality. So he went through a variety of tests, uncovering a method to generate consistently reliable serial numbers, as well as a low-selling device that would be unlikely to have a lot of serial numbers in the wild—and landed on the iMac Pro.
“I actually went through, and I've got like 15 iMac Pros in my Apple account now, and it says that they're all valid for iMessage,” he said. “Obviously I was going to delete them after, but I was just testing, one by one, seeing if that's the reason why it does work.”
Beyond making it possible to use iMessage to hold a conversation in a VM, he noted that random security codes like this are actually desirable for security researchers for bug-reporting purposes. Sick Codes adds that it is also an effective tool that could be used as one part of the process for jailbreaking an iPhone.
(At one point, he speculated, possibly in jest, that he might have been the reason the iMac Pro was recently discontinued.)

An Army of Virtual Hackintoshes
On its own, the serial code thing is interesting, but the reason it exists is because MacOS is not currently designed to work at a scale fitting of Docker, a popular tool for containerization of software that can be replicated in a cloud environment. It could—with its use of the Mach kernel and roots in BSD Unix, there is nothing technically stopping it—but Apple does not encourage use of VMs in the same way that, say, Linux does.
A side effect of hacking around Apple’s decision not to directly cater to the market means that it could help making Hackintoshing dead simple.
Let’s take a step back to explain this a little bit. Hackintoshing, throughout its history, has tended to involve installing MacOS on “bare metal,” or on the system itself, for purposes of offering more machine choice or maximizing power.
But virtualization, by its nature, allows end users to work around differences in machines by putting an abstraction layer between the system and its many elements. And virtualization is incredibly sophisticated these days. Docker-OSX relies on kernel-based virtual machines, or KVMs, Linux-based hypervisors that allow virtual machines to get very close to the Linux kernel, able to run at nearly full speed though a common open-source emulator, QEMU.
Comparable to things like Oracle’s Virtualbox or the Parallels virtualization tool on MacOS, they are very technical in the way they work, and are often managed through the command line, requiring a complex mishmash of code that can be hard to figure out. (One common challenge is getting graphics cards to work, as the main interface is already using the resource, requiring something known as a “passthrough.”)
But the benefit of KVMs is that, if you tweak them the right way, you can get nearly the full performance of the main machine, something that has made KVMs popular for, say, letting Linux users play Windows games when the desire strikes. And since they’re disk images on hard drives, backing one up is as easy as duplicating the file.
At the same time, improvements to Hackintoshing have opened up new possibilities for doing things. In the past year or so, the Clover approach of Hackintoshing (as I used in this epic piece) has given way to a new boot tool, OpenCore, and a more “vanilla” approach to Hackintoshing that leaves the operating system itself in a pure form.
The benefit of Docker-OSX is that, while command-line codes are required (and while you’ll still need to do passthrough to take advantage of a GPU), it hides much of the complicated stuff away from the end user both on the KVM side and the Hackintosh side. (And, very important for anything involving a project like this: It is incredibly well-documented, with many use cases covered.) Effectively, if you know how to install Docker, you can whip up a machine. Or a dozen. Or, depending on your workload, a thousand.
Sick Codes explained this to me by whipping up a DigitalOcean image in which he at one point put four separate installs of MacOS on the screen, each using a modest 2 gigabytes of RAM. I was able to interact with them over a VNC connection, which is basically nerd heaven if you’re a fan of virtualization.
“Why is it better than Hackintosh? It’s not Hackintosh, it’s like your own army of virtual throwaway Hackintoshes,” Sick Codes explained.
There are two areas where this approach comes particularly in handy—for programming and compiling code for Apple-based platforms such as iOS and iPad OS, which benefit from scale, and for security research, which has seen a rise in interest in recent years.
With more than 50,000 downloads—including some by known companies—and, in one case, a container so large that it won’t even fit on the Docker Hub website, Docker-OSX has proven a useful choice for installing virtual Macs at scale.
Macs in the Server Room
In a way, Apple kind of set things in motion for an open-source solution like this to emerge, in part because of the unusual (and for a time, unspoken) restrictions that it puts on virtual machines.
For years, a niche of Apple-specific cloud providers, most notably MacStadium, have emerged to help serve the market for development use cases, and rather than chopping up single machines into small chunks, as providers like DigitalOcean do, users end up renting machines for days or weeks at a time—leading to unusual situations like the company buying thousands of 2013 Mac Pros for customers six years after its release.
(MacStadium offers a cloud-based competitor to Docker-OSX, Orka.)
Apple does not sell traditional server hardware that could be better partitioned out in a server room, instead recommending Mac Minis, and with the release of Big Sur, it put in a series of guidelines in its end user license agreement that allowed for virtualization in the way that MacStadium was doing things—but not in the more traditional rent-by-the-hour form. (Competitors, such as Amazon Web Services, have also started selling virtualized Macs under this model.)
Licensing agreements aside, given the disparity between Apple’s devices and how the rest of the cloud industry doles out infrastructure, perhaps it was inevitable someone was going to make something like Docker-OSX. And again, the tool turns things that used to be a headache, like generating unique serial codes for virtual Macs, into something painless.
“If you run a [command-line] tag that says, generate unique, and then set it to true, it will just make your new Mac with a new serial number that you can use to log straight into iMessage,” Sick Codes explained. “If you keep doing that, keep logging in, you'll have like 45 Macs in your account, and they'll all be valid Macs.”
In recent years, companies like Corellium, which sells access to virtualized smartphones to developers and security researchers, have effectively built their services without worrying about EULA limitations and faced lawsuits from Apple over it. Sick Codes, generally working in the open-source community and helping to uncover technical issues, is very much in this spirit.
It’s possible that something might happen to stop the spread of fake iMac Pro serial codes in virtual machines all over the internet—as I started reporting this, MacRumors revealed that, according to an internal support document, Apple is about to redo its approach to serial numbers to make the numbers more random and harder to mimic. (Repair advocates are not happy about this.) But there’s only so much Apple could do about the machines currently on the market, given that there are so many millions of them.
But for people who want to install MacOS on a cheap box somewhere and don’t care about things like Apple Silicon, it’s now as easy as installing Linux, installing Docker, and typing in a couple of commands. Sick Codes noted that, beyond the scalability and security advantages, this opens up opportunities for users who can’t afford the “Apple tax.”
“Feels pretty wholesome knowing anyone can participate in Apple's bug bounty program now, or publish iOS and Mac apps,” Sick Codes said. “App development shouldn't be only for people who can afford it.”

The 8 Blunders Assured to Doom Your Corporate Video Production
It's been a really impressive journey. I have actually been in the video clip and also multimedia production business because 1981 and in my 30+ years in business, I have actually seen some definitely incredible jumps in the sector. To place video in historic point of view, it was only 22 years before I took the plunge right into specialist video that Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba, and also JVC presented helical-scan recording, which is the technique utilized because to record on video tape recorders. It took practically the entire succeeding 22-year span to bring these helical check recorders into the home.
When I started in video manufacturing in 1981, consumer video clip recording was in its early stage. Most American homes did not have a Video Cassette Recorder. VHS was still fighting Betamax (what's that?!) for superiority in the house video clip layout wars. Tape (huh?) was the staple of industrial as well as marketing video production and 2" "Quad" machines (what??) were what the "real" program studios utilized for their highest editing and also studio job. Area cams with the ability of producing the best broadcast-quality images set you back greater than the majority of houses at the time. (And now these have actually been surpassed in high quality by today's customer video cameras.) The CD-Rom had not yet come on the scene, and internet usage was years away. Pressed video and also streaming on web sites were barely the typical "delusion" of someone's creative imagination. DVDs? HDTV? You're kidding!
Yet in spite of the extraordinary technical breakthroughs over the years, numerous things have remained consistent. The demand to record and also preserve audience interest, tell a story, and accomplish one's purposes were all essential to successfully interacting after that, and also remain so today.
Best Video Production Companies Portland
And also as technical breakthroughs have brought cost effective high-grade video clip as well as multimedia into the hands of the neophyte, the need to utilize them "correctly" has stayed. Just because you've got a paint brush, that doesn't make you Rembrandt!
Allow's have a look at several of the errors still made in workplace corporate video and multimedia programs:
The 8 Blunders Ensured to RUIN Your Company Video or Multimedia Project:
MISTAKE 1. DON'T TROUBLE TO RECOGNIZE YOUR AUDIENCE (OR TO REGULARLY MAINTAIN IT IN MIND).
This is the first and foremost rule of producing any kind of type of interactions program, yet it is remarkable exactly how frequently it gets broken. This rule is certainly not distinct to video or multimedia programs. In all forms of sound as well as aesthetic interaction, it is important to establish an exact definition of the target audience - and remember it.
Market research companies and departments invest billions of bucks every year to establish that will certainly obtain a message to make sure that appropriate item positioning, advertising and also promotions can be done. And also it is cash well invested.
Yet we frequently see firms approaching their video and/or multimedia tasks with a "Ready, Fire, Objective" strategy. They make use of a shotgun when a rifle is asked for. They attempt to interest a number of audiences with the hope that the program will certainly offer several functions. Remember, when you attempt to attract everyone, you attract nobody.
While the same standard program can in some cases be utilized for different target markets, it is suggested that various variants or variations be created for those various teams. It's a straightforward issue to re-edit or re-narrate portions of a manufacturing. Nevertheless, efficiency demands that this is planned initially of the project.
So remember to intend the job with your audience in mind. Know what their level of knowledge or experience is with the subject. This will avoid the problem of capturing as well low (e.g. losing their time showing or informing them something they recognize) or too high (losing them because you assume a degree of proficiency they have not yet obtained).
  BLUNDER 2. DON'T PRE-DETERMINE YOUR PURPOSE.
This goes together with the very first item. In addition to understanding who you are speaking with, you require to know what you desire them to do or really feel after the program has been provided.
Whenever possible, the objective must be quantifiable. It is absolutely less complicated to gauge cause the location of training. As any excellent training expert recognizes, pre- and post-training evaluation tests can evaluate the outcomes of a training program.
Likewise, to buy and also advertising or interactions, thorough testing as well as stats can be gathered concerning project recognition and attitudes before as well as after the presentation of the overall program package. However each of those possibly aren't the actual wanted results - the true objective is inflating the sales figures.
As in training, it is preferable to gauge the effectiveness the sales or communications program has in fulfilling the specified goals.
There is a problem, nonetheless. Dimension of the particular impact of the video or multimedia program is hard, as the manufacturing is commonly not used alone. Rather it is normally component of a bundle of various other product delivered along with the video clip or multimedia program.
Ideally, we want to emulate large consumer firms, where extensive marketing research gives in-depth analysis of certain advertising and marketing and marketing methods. They can separate the effects of individual parts of an overall brand name advertising and marketing method, as an example. However this requires an extensive historic background as well as a large sample size to help separate variables as well as establish causal partnerships.
Nevertheless, this is more bothersome in the business-to-business world.
B to B companies seldom have the historical information to statistically isolate the domino effect partnerships of specific advertising and marketing elements. This is intensified since a new product or service intro is often where we see the merger of these packages of video, trade show cubicle, collateral and trade publication advertising. This makes historical comparisons greatly unnecessary.
The opportunity to measure program performance is possible, nonetheless. Anecdotal evidence can be gathered from customers regarding what sections of the complete package made the most significant impact. This can even be formally measured with the use of surveys. Mix in an excellent section of sector experience and also common sense, as well as the sales or advertising and marketing exec can usually obtain a pretty good feel for the effect of the video or multimedia portion of the project, along with the other private elements.
BLUNDER 3. JUST ASSUME THAT VIDEO CLIP OR MULTIMEDIA IS THE REMEDY TO YOUR PROBLEM.
Not all issues can be addressed through using video clip as well as multimedia, to make sure that is why it is so vital to comprehend the response to # 1 and # 2 above.
In the area of sales and advertising and marketing, video clip and multimedia can be an essential tactical part in the mix. In various other areas, such an abilities training, a video presentation might be just the ticket to be able to show correct method to freshly hired or promoted people.
As a whole, video clip as well as multimedia jobs are best made use of where revealing the product, solution or process is advised. In sales and also advertising and marketing, a particularly reliable usage is to show items in use that are impractical to offer the potential customer for a demo. Throughout the years, we have done programs revealing hotels, huge production line robotics, tidy area processes, exercise programs, and numerous other areas where a demonstration in an office of the product or service is simply not practical.
In areas involving interpersonal skills, such as monitoring training, video could be a component of the solution. Establishing the groundwork in a location can be an exceptional use of video, specifically if there will be lots of staff members with time who need this training. But for smaller sized groups, or for quick periods of time, role having fun and also other techniques might be called for, whereas video clip as well as multimedia would certainly not.
BLUNDER 4. TAKE THE MINDSET THAT "IT'S SIMPLY A COMPANY VIDEO".
Allow's deal with facts: your audience is included sophisticated tv and media visitors. According to Nielsen Study, the average American watches 4 hours and 35 minutes of TV daily.
With your customers regularly pounded with video images, they are fairly jaded to "normal" video clip. They are sophisticated consumers of the media, so do not think that you they will certainly excuse shoddy manufacturing values if you want to provide an effective message.
The obvious effects is that the more important the suggestion you desire to interact, the better the reason to have your video clip or multimedia project expertly created. If it's worth doing, it deserves doing well.
I will certainly be the initial to confess that there are jobs that are exceptions to the "it's only business video" regulation. If you are just recording a technical seminar or other "mind dump" for future new hires or people that are out of community, after that by all implies set up the camera in the rear of the space as well as allow it run. However even if that holds true, please see policy # 7, below.
Now that we have actually addressed the pre-production problems, allow's take a look at some significant production gaffes that will doom your manufacturing:.
ERROR 5. SKIP THE LIGHTS AND ALSO OTHER DEVICES THAT WILL ACTUALLY MAKE THE PHOTO "POP".
The current level of electronic modern technology is truly extraordinary. Residence video cameras are simple to utilize and also inexpensive, and everyone fantasizes himself or herself a TELEVISION supervisor. But as good as these video cameras have actually become, a professional, high-impact appearance will just come when added lights and also other devices are applied. Also existing reality programs are supplemented by lots of lights tools and other gear specifically developed to make the shots look excellent.
Understanding how to light is a full art and scientific research unto itself. If you were to evaluate the motion picture credits at the end of a significant movie (without computer animation or special impacts) over half individuals would certainly be associated with lights as well as related locations to make the photo look perfect.
Naturally, we're not trying to duplicate "Gone with the Wind" below, yet keep in mind that the photo that you reveal, is the image that represents YOU.
Along with lighting tools, a few of the gear that may be called right into play includes soft lights, gels, reflectors, bounce cards, cookies, scrims and also light diffusion.
In one shoot we did featuring Steve Young of 49er popularity, we made use of 2 huge soft lights as the primary lights resource. We have likewise have other "more difficult" (e.g. not soft) lights over and also to the left of this image - consisting of fill and also back lights.
A light cutter at the top center is used to maintain way too much light from swamping the history.
In an additional shoot outdoors, we sued a big reflector to the side of the subject in addition to a haze maker. The reflector is made use of to redirect sunlight for an exterior shoot. We additionally utilized a half flag, utilized to block and also diffuse a few of the light coming from a huge light (yes, you can utilize lights outdoors).
While such an array of illumination and also grasp equipment is commonly not available for shooting business video on your own, it can enhance the photo drastically. And also if your spending plan does not allow a total video manufacturing staff to shoot the video, freelance illumination supervisors with rental tools are readily available, which can give a company video a look that will establish it apart from other a lot more unskilled initiatives.
BLUNDER 6. DON'T Make Use Of A TRIPOD OR OTHER CAMERA SUPPORT.
The pros understand that a consistent electronic camera is vital to getting a great, interesting picture. If the video camera is jumping around, the customer obtains sidetracked as well as commonly, irritated. If the visitor's mind is busy adhering to the subject around the display, it will not be concentrating on your message.
At specific times, a moving video camera ends up being an art type, such as is seen in music videos. Yet company videos are not video. Keep the cam on the tripod and maintain the electronic camera movements smooth.
When the pros fire, there are a wide range of camera mounts available for photo stablizing. These include different sizes of tripods, jib arms, cranes, dollies and a Steadicam.
In some shoots we may make use of a dolly, with the camera operator on board, as well as the dolly hold pushing it on tracks. The dolly tracks motion efficiently, but as a result of the cost of rental and also both people needed to operate it, it can be an expensive addition to the program.
We typically use a jib arm to make jumping and also climbing shots of a store facade, a, and so on. The jib can be rented out in numerous sizes as well as can develop a nearly 3D look. It requires an experienced driver.
While the jib can move thoroughly around a topic, for true 3D views, a Steadicam is called for. This is a specific harness that requires to be used by a skilled video camera driver. It can give remarkable check out the topic, consisting of moving efficiently around them for 360 levels or more. Unless you have a Steadicam as well as trained driver, do not follow your subject around with the electronic camera - leave it to the pros.
MISTAKE 7. USAGE THE ELECTRONIC CAMERA MICROPHONE TO RECORD THE SOUND.
The fast enhancement and also compactness of video clip is additionally materialized in the audio that accompanies it. Video cameras today document exceptional noise. Yet there is a problem.
The problem is that the audio source closest to the video camera microphone will be tape-recorded best. And this may not be what you want taped.
Have you ever before established a camera in the back of the room to tape a live workshop as well as listened to the outcome? Isn't it outstanding just how the remarks, coughs and accidents in the back of the area audio so clear - and also the audio speaker is muddled at those points?
I just can not count the number of times people have actually come to us to ask if we can improve the sound from just such presentations, and also other real-time events too.
In short, the solution is unfortunately "No." We can not bring out audio that essentially is not there.
What is the solution? It's all just an issue of microphone placement. In such a situation, you ought to purchase a lavaliere microphone for the speaker to wear. The mic is after that in place less than a foot from the speaker's mouth as well as will record clear sound.
Another option is to make use of a mic on a boom post contemporary of framework. We've done this frequently, such as in the Steve Youthful shoot I pointed out earlier. The boom mic is usually just above the head of the subject, yet is cropped out of the fired by the video camera.
Ideally when buying or renting a lavaliere, get a good wireless microphone. Don't defeat the function by getting a cheap microphone that feeds hums as well as hisses to your recording system. A pair of decent, yet low-cost headphones will let you listen to the audio that you are obtaining. If you do not get a clean signal, take the microphone back to the shop and also get one that helps you.
Costs permanently top quality mics have come down dramatically over the years, so if you are going to do much of this kind of "talking head" recording, it's worth the tiny investment.
Microphones are undoubtedly not just for boosting. You require a good mic close to the subject to get good clear audio.
MISTAKE 8. LETTING YOUR IN-HOUSE "TALENT" JUST WING IT.
Allow's encounter it, your associates are not professional actors, and they require some assistance to remember all things they require to say and do on cam. I discussed this just recently with another producer buddy of mine, as well as he commented, "If I had a nickel for every single time I shot an officer who claimed he can just talk off the top of his head ... What disasters!".
I concur. Use a teleprompter. It installs in front of the electronic camera. Your exec or worker can look right at the cam and also review the words as if he were looking into the lens. After a number of method runs, beginners are usually comfortable adequate to blast throughout the manuscript. It's money well invested as it indicates much faster shooting, less errors, as well as fewer frayed nerves.
And also if your exec looks tight or truly does not like the feeling of "reading" the words, we can put up bullet points or PowerPoint slides on the prompter to make sure that she or he can still appear to be checking out the target market. This avoids the trouble of the presenter averting to notes or hint cards and looking "shifty eyed" consequently.
  VERDICT.
As always, the slogan of "If it deserves doing, it's worth doing well" puts on your productions. However there are times when a huge complete range production is not called for. Thankfully, it is no longer a matter of all or absolutely nothing when it involves bringing specialist production values to your job.
You do not need to spend tens of countless dollars for a program.
It surprises lots of people that are thinking about the production of industrial video clip or multimedia that there is an efficient happy medium that can be used. This can be a significant cost saver. This consists of hiring one or more experts to aid. This can be:.
a producer/director to supervise your production,.
an illumination supervisor with tools,.
a teleprompter driver with equipment,.
a cosmetics artist to make your exec appearance "perfect".
an editor to bring together the footage you've shot into a crisp, efficient program,.
a visuals musician or animator to brighten your graphics,.
a duplication center to make mass amounts of your video, DVD or CD.
Via making use of seasoned professionals in some or all areas of your next manufacturing, you can make certain that you develop a program that fulfills your objectives in a reliable and reliable method.

TestNG Not For Me: Why I Cannot Recommend TestNG Any More
When I was working with Selenium for the first time, the tool stack I learned with was Java-based. The test runner that my team used at the time was TestNG, and we made pretty liberal use of its functionalities. I also got to know TestNG pretty well. Although I liked Java, I loved TestNG. It was a powerful test framework that was well-suited to building a Selenium-based test harness. While I've worked with different languages and tool stacks since then, my fondness for TestNG remained.
Until now.
During the past few months, I've seen enough issues with Java-based test frameworks to see TestNG (and other libraries) from some different perspectives. And based on these experience, my love for TestNG has faded and I can no longer recommend TestNG as a "default" choice for Java-based test projects. The main reasons come down to characteristics of good test projects and what really matters when writing good test harnesses, Selenium-based or not.
In my experience, the most critical criteria of successful test automation frameworks are the following:
Running all tests in a test harness on a regular basis. This may mean quarantining some tests temporarily and/or deleting tests permanently.
Writing independent and stable tests that can be executed at any time during the development cycle.
Realizing that long-term project maintenance is far more important than short-term test writing.
TestNG, for all of its merits, eventually fails at supporting these three points. While there may be some helpful features that TestNG provides in the short-run, in the long-run there are simply better choices.
TestNG: The Good Parts
Before I write about the downsides of TestNG, I feel like I should mention why I was drawn to it in the first place. One thing that I've become acutely aware of in the past years is that user experience in test automation tooling is critical for both tooling adoption and day-to-day work. If a tool is nice to use and solves real problems, not only am I more likely to use it but it's more likely other people will use it as well. This creates communities and shared knowledge which can move the needle forward in general. Test automation is no exception; being able to write code that can test specific circumstances and solve key problems is important and tooling that help in a neat and tidy way will get some attention.
After working with TestNG for a while, I found it had good developer UX. There were underlying conventions in TestNG that I could get a "feel" for after some experience using it. Although there was a lot of functionality and surprisingly large number of annotations, after a while I could guess what I needed to use and was often correct. If I needed a particular annotation, I could often deduce which one I needed based on experience and logical thinking and voila, the tests would run as expected.
As well, TestNG provided some functionality to - for lack of a better term - paper over some shortcomings that Java had for test automation. For example, Java notoriously does not have default/optional method parameter values, so TestNG implemented this feature. This is extremely helpful for Selenium tests where default browser types or configuration values are commonly used. TestNG also allowed for grouping and organizing tests in sophisticated ways and provided listener functionality to perform particular actions not just on test success or failure but other events too. At the time, these features were vital for writing good test harnesses that did more than evaluate class instances as in unit testing.
Based on this, TestNG should be applauded for solving some gnarly issues in designing good test automation. But even these beautiful features have faded from glory as time went on.
Getting It All Together: Running All Tests Regularly
When I worked with TestNG, one of the draws to using it over JUnit was the ability to organize tests into different groups or suites. On my team we had acceptance test suites for each product, and on the product I worked on this was a subset of all the automated tests that were written. Additionally there were regression suites and some additional suites for more specific functionality for security or specific features. Specifying a new suite was pretty easy since TestNG tests were executed using a specific testng.xml file. In such a file we could include or exclude tests by package, class or test method name and even pass in additional parameters needed per suite. Each test suite was executed using an Ant script on our Jenkins instance. It all worked wonderfully.
Except it didn't.
I realize now that breaking down these tests into such suites was a slippery slope toward instability and extra work for us. Each new test class needed to be carefully added or removed from existing testng.xml files, and the number of Jenkins jobs executing tests became unwieldy. Eventually some suites were run regularly, and others were not run regularly and instead run "on demand" - meaning basically never. This increased complexity in maintaining existing suites and adding new tests to suites.
Test code is production code, and like production code it experiences its own form of rot. In the case of automated tests, the application under test changes and updates, along with the test framework tools and language. In the case of Selenium tests, locators, URLs, application screens, and flows change leading to broken tests. Tests that aren't exercised regularly start to rot, and when they are run it is painful to try to update them to work which in turn lowers and information or value those tests produce for teams. It leads to frustration with the whole test automation enterprise and reduces confidence overall. This is a bad scene.
The problem with TestNG is that it makes it too easy to divide up tests into such suites in the first place. With some foresight, building test suites that are designed to run all tests regularly pays dividends over time in avoiding rotting test code. Regularly can mean whatever works best in a team's context - nightly, hourly, on every pull request, on every commit, on every merge to mainline, or similar. Even dividing up tests in to two or three groups (smoke/regression or smoke/acceptance/regression, for example) can be done with a bit of planning and low overhead. Maven and JUnit are essentially designed from this perspective; find all test classes in the src/test package following a basic naming convention and run them. The TestNG grouping approach leads to suites that are too finely organized, and running tests via testng.xml files can facilitate this issue.
Standing On My Own: Why Writing Independent Tests Is Important
Another problem more applicable to web-based browser testing is designing tests that execute well independently of each other. For many teams, this is no small task. Often with enterprise applications there are limitations in creating and using test data and application instances. A team may have to share a server instance with other teams, such as other QA teams or development teams. Also there may be long or complex workflows that need to be tested that cannot be easily executed concurrently or repeated.
Here again TestNG has some easy solutions that turn out to be terrible.
TestNG allows for tests to depend on other tests or set conditions. For example, TestNG has the @dependsOnMethod annotation where you can specify a method that must execute before a given test method can execute. I've used this as testA must run and succeed before testB can execute. This means I can be assured that any side effects from testA are in place that may affect testB which was helpful working in environments as mentioned above where there were limited application instances to test again or test data was difficult to create. There's also ways to set a priority of tests in TestNG where tests of priority 1 execute first, then tests of priority 2 execute, and so on until all priorities are executed.
These capabilities are great workarounds. But to really succeed, tests should be run independently and in any order without such workarounds. This means arranging for stable test environments dedicated to test automation, managing test data as best you can, using hooks to setup test data without relying on a (G)UI layer by injecting data at the database or API level. And certainly tests should be designed to be executed independently from the start. Again TestNG seemingly provides good tools to solve hard problems but ends up making matters more difficult than needed.
The Little Things: Thinking Long Term
The most important costs for any test automation project are maintenance costs. Writing a test - even a complicated one - often takes much less effort than maintaining that test over time. This is also true of test infrastructure such how a test is run, when a test is run, what happens before and after test runs, and so on. Little things like how a test gets executed can make a big impact.
TestNG typically leans on the testng.xml for selecting tests to run. This is fine or even desirable in an development or IDE setting. Running a set of TestNG tests from Eclipse or IntelliJ is pretty straightforward. Running testng.xml files on a continuous integration (CI) server is slightly more complicated but can also be accomplished but will also look different from running tests locally. Where running testng.xml-based tests are often a right-click-select-Run operation in an IDE, continuous integration services like Jenkins will need something else. This could be an Ant script, using a TestNG-based plugin or some edits to the pom.xml for using Maven. This is true even if there's a single testng.xml with a single suite.
In contrast, executing tests directly using Maven is identical even if using TestNG as your sole test framework in code. Adding the Maven Surefire plugin even allows for running specific tests or subsets of tests both from a development environment and CI environment. It also removes the overhead managing an additional XML file. This may seem like a slight improvement, but over time the lower maintenance costs and unified approach to test execution will pay off.
It's Not You, It's Me
I really don't want to sound like TestNG is terrible (or that Maven is amazing). TestNG is a well-built library and many teams have found success using its functionality. But over time, I find that the downsides outweigh the benefits.
I'll always remember TestNG as a good first step on my journey, but it is no longer the tool I reach for first in my Java toolbox.

Welcome to the chronilogical age of the Victory Roll hairstyle, that was known as after an airplane maneuver found in World War II. The style includes a signature ‘V’ shape, that has motivated numerous modern-day pin-up and rockabilly brides. Another style called the Queue Curl showcased a flat top with curled sides and right right back.
Brides began putting on their locks at the top of top of the minds in a waved roll. In those times, ladies utilized rolled-up stockings that are old produce fundamentals for his or her hairstyles, the same as they utilized structures in Edwardian times.

Big locks ended up being straight straight right back after 1970s convenience. Not just were neighbours Kylie that is starring Minogue.
The 1990s (at least the early 1990s) didn’t disappoint if you thought the 1980s were all about big hair. Perms, curled bangs, and a good amount of hairspray had been hot.
Gradually, insane amount ended up being moving away from style. Victoria Adams (a.k.a. Posh Spice) famously wore her hair quick and a small spiky when she married soccer celebrity David Beckham. She additionally donned a tiny tiara.
The change of the century saw a return to ease for hairstyles. Jennifer Aniston’s design on her behalf wedding to Brad Pitt is just a perfect instance.
The retro birdcage veil has arrived back in a way that is big. Nation celebrity Miranda Lambert wore a mini one with soft, tousled waves on her wedding to Blake Shelton.
In a time whenever such a thing goes, some brides choose for a far more traditional updo. Countess Stephanie de Lannoy wore her locks pulled back a twist whenever she married Luxembourg’s Prince Guillaume. Her silk and veil that is tulle diamond family tiara refined from the appearance.
These days, soft, retro-inspired waves are probably one of the most popular bridal hairstyles. They appear effortless, but that “we woke up similar to this” look may take hours to master. Actress/reality star Kristin Cavallari sported them in her own wedding to Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

The Last Machine: The Culture
The setting is summarized HERE.
An overview of the Chimera Plague and its impact is located HERE.
Find a breakdown of the population demographics HERE.
The magic system is briefly explained HERE.
Common technology and industries are explained HERE.
Between the effects of the Chimera Plague, the loss of widespread communication infrastructure, the discovery and spread of magic, and the chaos involved in the formation of each community of survivors, there’s a lot about Lost Eagle Country and the people living in it that really stands out in comparison to The World That Was, when there are records available to compare things to.
Arts and Entertainment: Music plays a considerable role in every community when it comes to creative expression and art, followed by theatrics in the form of plays. Live entertainment is the norm. Most towns have a library of some sort where knowledge is preserved, but actual appreciation for contemporary literature is hard to find outside of Postville. Both Postville and Arcadia have museums dedicated to art and artifacts, but again, these are mostly used to preserve whatever can be saved from The World That Was, rather than providing reflections of modern sensibilities. Creative types are pushing to change this, but it’s too soon to tell if they will succeed.
Crime and Law: It’s impossible to get a bunch of people together in the same place and not end up with fights, arguments, theft and even murder. Different communities tend to form their own taboos, legal restrictions, and punitive measures; for example, the greatest punishment in the Dwarven Freeholds is exile, being completely cut off from all other Dwarves and their support, while for other communities the most serious response to criminal action is death. Out of necessity, these are reserved only for the most heinous of crimes, but again, different communities have different ideas about how heinous a given act is. The legal system has been simplified by all towns and settlements agreeing on a handful of common rights for inhabitants and visitors alike, such as the right to autonomy, right to security, and right of expression, but beyond that things get complicated very fast.
Economics: Lost Eagle Country relies on precious metals to mint their currency; specifically, an aluminum wafer called the Tab. Originally the actual trading post that stood where Postville eventually grew would use the tabs from aluminum beer and soda cans as markers, and would accept payment for debts in the form of various metals, including aluminum. The technology needed to create new aluminum metal from raw ore is incredibly complex and energy intensive, and the metal itself is both lightweight and resistant to corrosion, making it very useful as a medium of exchange in 2125. These coins are minted in the Lost Eagle Mint at Postville, and banks do exist in Postville, Romero, Arcadia and Elsie, but Millstone and the Dwarven Freeholds refuse to establish any sort of bank for ideological reasons.
Education: Every major town has at least one school. Not every town has the same lessons. Dwarven math and science leans towards engineering and geology, while in Millstone the scientific focus is based on biology and the weather. These schools also include information that is out of date or just completely made up, especially regarding the other communities of Lost Eagle Country and the people who live in them. Postville being the accidental melting pot that it is, it’s education is mostly free of such errors. Mostly.
Fashion: The first rule of clothing in Lost Eagle Country is that it lasts as long as possible. Hand in hand with that is that it has to be tough and durable. The second rule of clothing is that more pockets are better. Beyond those two foundations, fashions and styles are actually in a considerable amount of flux in 2125. Short sleeves and high ankle cuffs are currently popular in Arcadia, while long sleeves are the rage in Elsie. High collared vests are popular in Millstone, while Dwarves visiting from the Freeholds have low collars, or none at all. Wearing suspenders in Elsie will get you laughed at, wearing suspenders in Romero will get you whistles, especially if you can pull it off. Decorative buttons are suddenly incredibly popular with the youth, probably because the “useless” ornamentation drives the parents to distraction. It’s an absolute free-for-all, especially in Postville, so much so that no type of clothing or way of wearing it is particularly unusual or worth remarking on.
Government: In theory, Postville is the capital of Lost Eagle Country. It has the highest population, the most flexible industry, and the most money. In practice, Lost Eagle Country is less of a state than an alliance of city-states banding together for mutual advantage. As a result, the elected officials of Postville just make policies for Postville. This has done more to slow down any sort of mobilization of a defending army to fight the Invader than any other factor, as different communities balk at sending their own to die to protect the other communities. There is no “national” ideal or symbol that everyone has agreed to unite behind. For the most part, government itself exists at the town hall level, with city officials elected by some sort of secret ballot (and the occasional scandalous not-so-secret or rigged ballot) and topics tend to be debated loudly and extensively at public meetings.
Healthcare: The largest and most sophisticated hospitals can be found in Postville and Arcadia, where both the population and the technological sophistication are high enough to justify their presence. Clinics and individual doctor’s offices can be found most anywhere else. Treatment varies according to the specific nature of the ailment or injury, but a mixture of technological medicine and healing magic is common. Following an “incident” in 2031, no businesses or organizations comparable to health insurance companies exist in Lost Eagle Country, but there are organizations known as “Health Co-operatives” that ostensibly fill similar roles.
Military: Strictly speaking, Lost Eagle Country does not have a professional military. Which is unfortunate, because they need one to deal with the Invader, and they need it yesterday. Elsie has a lot of airships, ultralights and gliders, and Romero has a number of armed ships, but neither one is exactly a professional air force or navy. However, Postville does happen to be the home of several organizations that could bend their talents in a Martial direction, especially the Wizard’s Cooperative. While they wouldn’t be able to raise a very large standing army, or even a small one very fast, these organizations lend themselves easily to the creation of small units of high power and high mobility. Rather than trying to take and hold territory, these units would apply their particular expertise (magic, chemistry, explosives, hunting, theft, psychological warfare, and so on) to making the Invader’s forces regret their life choices. It remains to be seen if this strategy can be pulled off, and if it will be enough.
Prejudice: In theory, the ability of the Chimera Virus to randomize people’s DNA should have eliminated racism, sexism, and a few more isms, and finishing off the anti-vaccination movement as a grand finale. After all, why would anybody deliberately follow any sort of ideology that gave a certain category of people the short end of the stick, when there was a significant chance of waking up one morning in that category, getting that end of the stick? In practice, the various quarantine procedures reinforced the age old dichotomy of “Us Versus Them” and there’s only so much that mutual economic survival can do against that kind of mentality, especially among the older folks. In Postville, and more generally speaking in Lost Eagle Country as a whole, no single chimeric genotype really has a majority outside of its home town or original quarantine zone; even the population that has the highest percentage is still vastly outnumbered by the other five. Practical necessities of survival being what they are, gender roles are not particularly rigid outside of the Dwarven Freeholds, and even then the Dwarves that don’t live in the Freeholds themselves are more likely to pay lip service to those ideas, if any.
Religion and Faith: Almost no organized religion survived unchanged from The World That Was, and that can be more or less laid entirely at the feet of the discovery of magic in general and Necromancy in particular. Consequently, there are only three major religions with a significant presence in Lost Eagle Country. The first and most common is Ancestor Worship or Ancestor Communion, which relies on Necromancy to communicate with the spirits of departed family members. The second most common form of religion is Sun Worship, as passed down by the words of St. Carlin, Patron of Entertainers. The third most common religion is Reform Judaism; as it turned out, Sheol or She’ol was the closest that any Abrahamic religion got to accurately describing the afterlife. Postville has temples and shrines representing all three religions, as do Arcadia and Romero. It’s worth noting that the Mother Shrine for most organized Sun Worship is found at the summit of Mt. Humble, and not inside the town of Elsie itself.

I'VE BEEN PONDERING KIDS
No one gets in trouble for. There were only a few rich people buy original art, and even the more sophisticated ones rarely get past judging it by the brand name of the university one went to is treated by a lot of ski instructors and not many running instructors. The component of entrepreneurship that really matters is domain expertise. That's where you'll find a group powerful enough to enforce a taboo. Starting a startup will change you a lot. Probably the single biggest piece of evidence, initially, will be cast as struggles between competing ideas. My immediate reaction to this list is that it has started to be driven mostly by people's identities. But business administration is not what you're doing.
You don't need to tell them the best way to convince investors the first time in over a decade the idea of being mistaken. If even someone with the same natural ability as Leonardo couldn't beat the force of environment, do you suppose you can? It's arguably implicit in making functions first class objects—they're a data type just like integers, strings, etc, and have them do most of the ideas writing would have generated. The probability that a startup operating out of a small agricultural town wouldn't benefit from moving to a startup hub a place is, the better startups will do there. A recent survey found 52% of companies are replacing Windows servers with Linux servers. And distraction. We did it because they were afraid of Google, and Google was in the bathroom! Instead of matching beige cubicles they have an assortment of furniture they bought used. These sound like rhetorical questions, but actually they tend to consider just good enough. I managed to write 'The Crucible,Arthur Miller wrote, but looking back I have often wished I'd had the temperament to do an absurd comedy, which is what the situation deserved. But this isn't true. No one gets in trouble for.
So you don't have to go far down it before you start to pull users away from GMail. You make something that looks to the user like the sufficiently smart compiler, but inside has people, using highly developed optimization tools to find and eliminate bottlenecks in users' programs. And it's impossible to do that is to visit them. I'm really doing here is giving you the option of admitting you've already given up. You might find contradictory taboos. If you argue against censorship in general, for application software, you want to prepare yourself to start a startup one day, what should you do in college is learn powerful things. And in both cases the results are not merely acceptable, but better.
But when people are bad at open-mindedness they don't know it. But that prescription, though sufficient, is too narrow. So if you want to write out your whole presentation beforehand and memorize it, that's ok. One of the more surprising things I've noticed while working on Y Combinator is how frightening the most ambitious startup ideas are. Google:: Google: Facebook. It's in these more chaotic fields that it helps most to be in a great city. Many employees would like to build great things for the companies they work for, but more often than not management won't let them. Recently a VC who came to work for a big company. And indeed, probably also the best way to do that at 20. The problem here is, average performance means that you'll go out of business. And that would in turn mean that you got practically all the users, and our competitors. Facebook did, you'll face a choice of several languages, it is, your best bet is to move to Silicon Valley in the late nineties.
But whatever the reason, there seems a clear correlation between intelligence and willingness to consider shocking ideas. Between Perl 4 and Perl 5, lexical closures got added to the language. In Silicon Valley no one would care except a few real estate agents. It doesn't even have x Blub feature of your choice. And I think I can prove I'm right. The last 10 years have reminded us what Moore's Law actually says. History is full of examples of young people who were working on Viaweb. One reason that's unlikely is that someone starting a startup can be part of a study. And in both cases the results are not merely technologies, but habits of mind as well, to suit our ideas of what kids ought to think. If they try to force you to treat a question on their terms by asking are you with us or against us? Most people reading this will be over that threshold.
It's easy to convince investors you're worth talking to further. But a discussion today about a battle that took place in the Bronze Age probably wouldn't. Google, you're already about 10% of the way to ensure that is to visit them. At this year's Boston Demo Day, it would just look like gibberish to someone who works on search at Google. And that's one reason open source, and even blogging in some cases, are so important. So while you'll probably survive, the problem now becomes to survive with the least damage and distraction. The company has, say, 6 months before they're out of business. I ignored it because he seemed so impressive. But it's not in your interest to. He wanted to spend his time thinking about biology, not arguing with people who seem impressive, but about the forces that produced them. What happened to him?
But I didn't use the term slippery slope by accident; customers' insatiable demand for custom work that unless you're really incompetent there has to be replaced with a new protocol. But I don't know what other people are doing, and consider only what will work the best. Technically the term high-level languages in the early 1990s, Harvard distributed to its faculty and staff a brochure saying, among other things, he tells would-be successors both directly, as Roger Bannister did, by showing how much better we could do than the channel. And I mean show, not tell. We'll probably never be able to think what you want and publish when you want. Then at least you can give back the money you have left, and save yourself however many months you would have gotten in trouble for saying that 2 2 is 5, or that people in Padua were ten feet tall, he would have been on the list that are surprising in the light of history. All the pain of whatever problem you're trying to save your company from death here, so make customers pay a lot, quickly. If you ever got me, you wouldn't have seen on the list 100 years ago, writing applications meant writing applications in the same language as the operating system, you can ask yourself what would I tell my own kids? Some tribes may avoid wrong as judgemental, and may instead use a more neutral sounding euphemism like negative or destructive. A lot of the questions people get hot about are actually quite complicated.

9 SMARTER Approaches to USE EXCEL FOR ENGINEERING
Tumblr media
As an engineer, you’re possibly implementing Excel pretty much daily. It does not matter what market that you are in; Excel is implemented Everywhere in engineering. Excel may be a tremendous system that has a whole lot of good potential, but how do you know if you are utilizing it to its fullest capabilities? These 9 strategies will help you start to acquire by far the most out of Excel for engineering. 1. Convert Units without External Tools If you’re like me, you most likely job with diverse units each day. It is one on the terrific annoyances on the engineering existence. But, it’s turned out to be a lot significantly less annoying due to a function in Excel which will do the grunt get the job done to suit your needs: CONVERT. It’s syntax is: Prefer to master all the more about advanced Excel ways? View my totally free training just for engineers. While in the three-part video series I will show you ways to solve complicated engineering challenges in Excel. Click here to get started off. CONVERT(number, from_unit, to_unit) The place quantity stands out as the worth that you simply prefer to convert, from_unit certainly is the unit of variety, and to_unit could be the resulting unit you choose to acquire. Now, you’ll no longer should go to outside equipment to locate conversion aspects, or very difficult code the components into your spreadsheets to trigger confusion later. Just let the CONVERT function do the work for you. You will find a total checklist of base units that Excel recognizes as “from_unit” and “to_unit” right here (warning: not all units can be found in earlier versions of Excel), but you may also make use of the function a number of times to convert more complicated units which might be popular in engineering.
two. Use Named Ranges for making Formulas A lot easier to understand Engineering is difficult adequate, not having making an attempt to determine what an equation like (G15+$C$4)/F9-H2 means. To eradicate the ache linked with Excel cell references, use Named Ranges to create variables that you can use in the formulas.
Not merely do they make it easier to enter formulas right into a spreadsheet, however they make it Easier to know the formulas after you or another person opens the spreadsheet weeks, months, or years later.
There are a number of different ways to make Named Ranges, but these two are my favorites:
For “one-off” variables, decide on the cell you prefer to assign a variable identify to, then kind the title with the variable within the identify box inside the upper left corner of your window (beneath the ribbon) as shown over. If you wish to assign variables to countless names at after, and have currently incorporated the variable title in the column or row following towards the cell containing the value, do that: First, select the cells containing the names and the cells you need to assign the names. Then navigate to Formulas>Defined Names>Create from Selection. For those who prefer to understand additional, it is possible to read through all about making named ranges from choices here. Would you like to find out a lot more about sophisticated Excel ways? Watch my free of cost, three-part video series just for engineers. In it I’ll show you easy methods to fix a complex engineering challenge in Excel applying some of these techniques and much more. Click here to get began. three. Update Charts Instantly with Dynamic Titles, Axes, and Labels To produce it effortless to update chart titles, axis titles, and labels it is possible to link them right to cells. If you should require for making loads of charts, this could be a true time-saver and could also probably help you evade an error as you forget to update a chart title. To update a chart title, axis, or label, to begin with establish the text that you just want to contain within a single cell for the worksheet. You can make use of the CONCATENATE perform to assemble text strings and numeric cell values into complex titles. Following, decide on the element to the chart. Then visit the formula bar and sort “=” and select the cell containing the text you wish to make use of.
Now, the chart part will instantly once the cell value changes. You can get artistic here and pull all types of info in to the chart, with out acquiring to fret about painstaking chart updates later on. It is all completed immediately!
4. Hit the Target with Objective Seek out Commonly, we setup spreadsheets to calculate a outcome from a series of input values. But what if you’ve accomplished this in the spreadsheet and desire to understand what input value will obtain a preferred result?
You may rearrange the equations and make the outdated end result the brand new input as well as the outdated input the brand new end result. You could potentially also just guess on the input right up until you realize the target end result. Fortunately although, neither of these are vital, given that Excel includes a tool identified as Intention Seek to accomplish the do the job to suit your needs.
Initially, open the Goal Look for instrument: Data>Forecast>What-If Analysis>Goal Seek. Within the Input for “Set Cell:”, pick the outcome cell for which you already know the target. In “To Value:”, enter the target value. Ultimately, in “By transforming cell:” decide on the single input you'd want to modify to change the outcome. Choose Okay, and Excel iterates to uncover the correct input to attain the target. 5. Reference Data Tables in Calculations 1 in the points which makes Excel an excellent engineering instrument is the fact that its capable of handling both equations and tables of data. And you also can combine these two functionalities to make robust engineering designs by hunting up information from tables and pulling it into calculations. You’re in all probability already acquainted together with the lookup functions VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP. In lots of cases, they are able to do all the things you will need.
Nonetheless, when you need to have far more flexibility and better control above your lookups use INDEX and MATCH instead. These two functions let you lookup data in any column or row of the table (not only the initial one particular), and you can control no matter if the worth returned certainly is the subsequent largest or smallest. You can even use INDEX and MATCH to carry out linear interpolation on the set of data. That is done by taking benefit within the versatility of this lookup approach to discover the x- and y-values straight away prior to and after the target x-value.
6. Accurately Match Equations to Data A different strategy to use present data in the calculation will be to fit an equation to that information and use the equation to determine the y-value to get a provided worth of x. Most people understand how to extract an equation from data by plotting it on the scatter chart and incorporating a trendline. That is Ok for receiving a easy and dirty equation, or comprehend what kind of function very best fits the data. Even so, in the event you choose to use that equation with your spreadsheet, you’ll demand to enter it manually. This could consequence in mistakes from typos or forgetting to update the equation once the information is altered. A greater way for you to get the equation is usually to use the LINEST function. It’s an array function that returns the coefficients (m and b) that define the most beneficial fit line via a information set. Its syntax is:
LINEST(known_y’s, [known_x’s], [const], [stats])
The place: known_y’s would be the array of y-values in the data, known_x’s certainly is the array of x-values, const is known as a logical worth that tells Excel regardless of whether to force the y-intercept to get equal to zero, and stats specifies regardless of whether to return regression statistics, such as R-squared, and so forth.
LINEST could be expanded beyond linear information sets to complete nonlinear regression on data that fits polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and power functions. It could even be applied for a variety of linear regression as well.
7. Conserve Time with User-Defined Functions Excel has many built-in functions at your disposal by default. But, should you are like me, you will find several calculations you end up accomplishing repeatedly that don’t possess a distinct function in Excel. They're ideal cases to make a User Defined Function (UDF) in Excel making use of Visual Essential for Applications, or VBA, the built-in programming language for Office merchandise.
Do not be intimidated whenever you read “programming”, even though. I’m NOT a programmer by trade, but I use VBA on a regular basis to broaden Excel’s abilities and conserve myself time. If you happen to prefer to know to create Consumer Defined Functions and unlock the massive potential of Excel with VBA, click here to read about how I produced a UDF from scratch to calculate bending strain.
eight. Complete Calculus Operations Any time you suppose of Excel, chances are you'll not assume “calculus”. But when you've got tables of data it is possible to use numerical evaluation techniques to determine the derivative or integral of that information.
These very same primary tactics are utilized by a great deal more complex engineering software to carry out these operations, and so they are simple and easy to duplicate in Excel.
To determine derivatives, you are able to use the either forward, backward, or central variations. Just about every of these solutions makes use of data through the table to determine dy/dx, the sole distinctions are which data factors are applied for the calculation.
For forward variations, make use of the data at point n and n+1 For backward variations, utilize the information at factors n and n-1 For central variations, use n-1 and n+1, as shown beneath
In case you demand to integrate information in a spreadsheet, the trapezoidal rule will work properly. This approach calculates the place under the curve between xn and xn+1. If yn and yn+1 are different values, the region kinds a trapezoid, hence the title.
9. Troubleshoot Poor Spreadsheets with Excel’s Auditing Equipment Every engineer has inherited a “broken” spreadsheet. If it’s from a co-worker, it is possible to normally inquire them to repair it and send it back. But what if the spreadsheet originates from your boss, or worse nevertheless, somebody who is no longer with the company?
From time to time, this may be a authentic nightmare, but Excel provides some tools that could assist you to straighten a misbehaving spreadsheet. Just about every of these equipment is often present in the Formulas tab within the ribbon, in the Formula Auditing section:
As you can see, one can find some completely different tools right here. I’ll cover two of them.
Very first, you can use Trace Dependents to find the inputs to the chosen cell. This could help you to track down in which each of the input values are coming from, if it’s not clear.
A number of times, this will lead you on the source of the error all by itself. Once you are done, click take out arrows to clean the arrows from the spreadsheet.
You can even use the Assess Formula tool to calculate the result of the cell - 1 step at a time. This is certainly valuable for all formulas, but primarily for those that include logic functions or a number of nested functions:
10. BONUS TIP: Use Data Validation to prevent Spreadsheet Mistakes Here’s a bonus tip that ties in using the final one particular. (Just about anyone who gets ahold of your spreadsheet within the potential will value it!) If you are creating an engineering model in Excel and you notice that there's a chance for the spreadsheet to make an error due to an improper input, you can limit the inputs to a cell by utilizing Data Validation.
Allowable inputs are: Full numbers higher or lower than a number or concerning two numbers Decimals better or less than a quantity or between two numbers Values within a listing Dates Times Text of a Distinct Length An Input that Meets a Custom Formula Data Validation might be located beneath Data>Data Resources from the ribbon.
