the eternal problem of being a picaresque lover is that there's no actual good way to end a picaresque. like it's fine, i've gotten used to it, but you have to be ready for a little bit of a let-down at the end of an otherwise fun experience.

#ah well i have learned to take the bitter with the sweet #truly this one did find a wilder end - the main character is a soviet cosmonaut who gets portal fantasied to a dark mirror of earth #and travels with an english napoleonic war sailor who also got portal-fantasied there #(because portals open randomly but wherever you start on earth they go to the same time on paragaea)#they fall in love; she gets pregnant; and at last decides to go back to earth #honestly all fine.#but the epilogue is her going to find his descendants & introducing her daughter to them #which like. again i know you gotta end somewhere #but wild dude.#probably thinking about the liklihood of them being the right family is Not Worth It #but despite the other silly stuff in the rest of the book that *did* get me #the things i choose to read
