The way everyone went wild over the “All Too Well” short film but Lord Huron made an entire movie out of their weird apocalypse (?) 50s biker gang concept album + the follow-up album

💎📌💔 for Lord Huron?
💎 are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?
Ooh ok yes. Fun fact, Peter Mendoza is an absolute treasure and I really am bummed he didn't have more of a role in Vide Noir. He played Alex, Johnnie's brother/World Enders leader, and of course he didn't even have a single speaking line. Which is a DAMN SHAME because he's a fantastic actor! Mostly he does live theater which crushes me as I am not in LA and can't go see it, but he had a lead role in the second season of Perry Mason (HBO) as Mateo Gallardo. He's a big champion of bringing Latino voices and stories to film and TV. He's also a real sweetheart - I think I may be the only person who has done fanart for him ever and he freaked out in the best way when he saw my drawing of Alex and shared it with everyone he knew, haha. Treasure your small time, up and coming actors and let them know how appreciated they are!
Tumblr media
📌 how did you find your hyperfixation?
A friend of mine (@leucrotta, you've done this to me and I thank you) and I were doing memes on another social media site that involved linking songs/playlists back and forth for our favorite characters/stories in an RPG we were in. Meet Me In the Woods was the song sent to me and boy did I love that and have to go listen to more.
And as much as I liked Strange Trails a lot and rocked that album for a while, Vide Noir is the one that really got its hooks into me thanks to Ancient Names pt. 1. The implications of some kind of strange, vaguely cosmic horror thing going on made me really want to know what the heck was going on in this song. I'd also seen The World Ender music video by then and had noticed that Hurricane was specifically written as "(Johnnie's Theme)" so I was like ok, clearly there are characters and related stories going on in here, there must be a write up somewhere. Went to reddit as the first line of searching, where the wiki was linked, and I basically just read everything on the wiki until I had absorbed it all over the course of like a week as my nightly reading. So yeah, that's how I became well and truly obsessed, haha.
💔 tell us about one of your LEAST favorite characters and why you dislike them.
Mmm, most of the characters designed to be unlikable I still find super interesting as characters. I mean, I joke about hating fuckboy stalker Buck Vernon who can't let a girl go, but like, I don't actually hate him at all, it's just entertaining to make fun of him.
I think the only real contender here is Andrew Winthrop. Fuck that guy. But he's super fucking dead as is his entire corporation now as far as we know. I absolutely love The World Ender as a story of anticapitalist and anticolonial revenge. That's the kind of fantasy I'm super here for.
Winthrop himself is barely a character though, he's really just an archetype. But I'm ok with that. I will hate him regardless.

Real talk though, the sound effects in vide noir are absolutely fantastic. In never ever it seems to give off a blend of space and western vibes. The beginning of ancient names 1 where it's just a little off. THE ECHOEY VOCALS IN SECRET OF LIFE???
AND THE LINE "I SCREAM AND SHOUT LIKE THIS JUST TO PROVE TO THE WORLD THAT I STILL EXIST" IN ANCIENT NAMES 2???? C'MON MAN
Anyways if I had to guess why vide noir feels different is that a lot of songs on the other albums are wistful in an... Emptier way I guess? Like vide noir feels a bit louder, a bit fuller, like you're lost in a sea of people, but the others feel a bit more like you're just straight up lost. If that makes any sense.
YEAHHHHHHHH YEAH YEAH i love going through vide noir phases where i listen to it over and over again and don’t get me STARTED on the live versions of wait by the river, secret of life, and ancient names part 1 and 2!!!!! OUGHHHH I GO INSANE OVER SECRET OF LIFE WHEN IT HITS
Tumblr media
and also it’s so funny you bring that up because i 100% agree AND YET it manages to be the only album that’s very clearly one storyline with the two main characters (which it does an amazing job of. don’t get me started on lost in time and space vs emerald star and the desperation that begins to seep in throughout the album oughhhh)?? but you’re right, you can even tell a bit in the album teasers, how the others will have one or two people on screen at a time vs vide noir that straight up has a crowd of people going bananas 🍌 and also it matches what ben schneider said about vide noir being them just “blowing the shit out the speakers” (something along those lines lmfao)

ok after listening to all albums on repeat non stop-
strange trails is my absolute favorite. i love it. especially when meet me in the woods fades into the yawning grave which fades into frozen pines. i want to inject those songs into my veins
vide noir is a good album, i still listen to it all the way through but my favorites are ancient names part 1 and 2, the balancers eye, secret of life, and vide noir.
long lost hurts so good. such a good album. love me like you use to???? ugh oh my god. as much as i hate mary linton (lots of reasons), this is her and arthur’s song for sure.
i think my least listened to is lonesome dreams, but none the less they are all so beautiful and fantastic.
thank you for peaking my interest because i honestly haven’t had any inspo to write my fanfic, and now that i have all this music, it just gives me the want and need to write all about arthur. 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
I totally agree with your opinions on the albums. Strange Trails will always be my favorite album, I think Long Lost is second, Vide Noir third (these two flip flop all the time though) and Lonesome Dreams is fourth but honestly, I've had more of an appreciation for the album after I realized how many of the songs work so well with Arthur. Lonesome Dreams, I Will Be Back One Day and In The Wind are three songs that I love with a passion. I always imagine In The Wind being a song about me waiting for Arthur at the end of Chapter 6 especially with the line, "you were my protector and my best friend." 😭 That line will always get me screaming, crying, and throwing up.
Yes!! Omg the transition between The Yawning Grave and Frozen Pines is unmatched. I absolutely love that you can't tell where the one song ends and when the next one starts.
ALSO SAME every time I listen to Drops in the Lake all I can think of is "this is literally Arthur and Mary's song and no one can tell me otherwise." It sums up their story perfectly. (also omg thank you for also not being a fan of Mary Linton because I could go on and on about how much I dislike her, but the Mary apologists scare me 😅).
Ahhh of course!! I know I've already said it many times but thank you for checking them out! I'm so glad you really resonated with their music and appreciate their art! And I feel that! I've never written a fanfic before, but their music has inspired me to try and write some stuff as well! (I'm still very tempted to write a fic inspired by Setting Sun or Love Me Like You Used To, etc. etc.).
I'll keep you updated when we hear more about when their 5th album comes out!

Thoughts on Long Lost that no one asked for, but I’m sharing them anyway
Or, In Which Annie Pretends To Be A Music Critic Because Why Not. I wrote these up as I listened to the album, so they’re my first impressions (except for Not Dead Yet, Mine Forever, and Long Lost, which I’d already heard).
The Moon Doesn’t Mind: An interesting little song, but there’s not much to say about it given it’s only 1 minute and 10 seconds long. I like it. I wish it was longer.
Rating: 7/10.
Favourite lyrics: N/A, because it’s too short to pick any, lol.
Mine Forever: This song was a banger when they put it out as a single, and it’s a banger now. I LOVE it. Songs about unhealthy, obsessive love are like, my favourite thing.
Also, not to bring my favourite unhealthy pairing of two fictional queer neurodivergent middle-aged doctors from a semi-obscure medical soap opera into this, but this song is still incredibly Johnrik vibes.
Rating: 10/10.
Favourite lyrics: “Love is strange, I can’t sleep without you / maybe in the grave I can dream about you / Everybody lies, but I’ll never doubt you / I don’t wanna die, but I can’t live without you”
(One Helluva Performer): A fun vocal interlude track. Not much to be said for it.
N/A for both rating and favourite lyrics.
Love Me Like You Used To: The moment the lyrics started, I immediately decided I loved this song. It’s great. If there’s any justice in the world, they’ll put it out as a single and it’ll go mainstream.
It’s also vaguely Johnrik vibes, though not as much as Mine Forever.
Rating: 8/10.
Favourite lyrics: “I’ve been lost before / and I’m lost again, I guess / but I never lost this feeling / or this pounding in my chest / I have travelled many miles, I don’t want to walk no more / every road and every highway led me right back to your door”
Meet Me In The City: The title immediately brings to mind Strange Trails’ ‘Meet Me In The Woods’, so I was very intrigued to hear what this song was going to be like. I like it. I think it’ll take me a few listens to fully appreciate it, but I like it.
I like the Strange Trails callback - “put on the dress you wore the night we met”.
And the reveal in the second verse that the narrator and his lover are actually having an affair was very clever. I love LH’s way of telling stories through their songs.
Rating: 7/10.
Favourite lyrics: “Forget the life you had and don’t look back / Get your courage up and drink this down / If our love is so wrong / tell me, why does it feel so right?”
This is getting a bit long now, so I’ll put the rest of my thoughts under the ‘keep reading’ button...
(Sing For Us Tonight): Such a brief interlude I have no opinion on it.
Long Lost: I wasn’t a big fan of this song when they released it as a single - I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t do much for me. In the context of the album, though, it’s fantastic! I can see why they picked it as the title track now.
Also, more Strange Trails callbacks - “out in the night all alone in the way out there...”
Rating: 9/10.
Favourite lyrics: “For a while I was held in the myth of the lost highway / In the spell of the night and the lights of the great white way”, and “Send me to the mountains / let me go free forever”.
Twenty Long Years: A melancholy song about the perils of addiction, and another example of Ben Schneider’s gift for storytelling. Just an absolutely brilliant song. I love it.
And I love the outro, with the crowd singing the song. It really adds to the atmosphere of the album.
Rating: 10/10.
Favourite lyrics: “I destroyed my health searching for myself / but there ain’t nothing there to find”, “I made a life out of chasing a ghost / twenty years takes its toll”.
Drops in the Lake: I thought from the title that this would be Johnrik vibes. I was not disappointed. I fucking love this song, oh my god. It’s perfect. It has me lost for words.
Rating: 10/10.
Favourite lyrics: Can I say the whole song? But especially “I go down to the edge of the lake / where I wait through the night for the dawn light to break / Memories of old crash like waves on the shore of my mind / And I pray that the stars will align / I just want us to be like we were long ago”, and “I look up at the uncaring sky / with a prayer on my lips and a tear in my eye”.
Where Did The Time Go: Another short but sweet song. It’s good.
Rating: 7/10.
Favourite lyrics: “May you laugh and sing your life full / may you learn the reasons why / may you live until you die”.
Not Dead Yet: This song got me hyped up for the album when they released it as a single in February, and I still love it now. It’s just so good, catchy, and danceable. I hope I get to go to another LH concert soon (I saw them in 2018, it was fantastic) just so I can rock out to this there. It’s one of those songs of theirs that feels downright magical.
Rating: 8/10. It’s just a damn good song.
Favourite lyrics: “There’s a stranger in my eyes again / I swear to God I don’t know him”.
(Deep Down Inside Ya): Another vocal interlude to add to the atmosphere of the album. It works for its purpose.
I Lied: I know they released this one as a single, but I’m only just now listening to it for the first time, because having already heard NDY, MF, and LL, I decided I could wait to hear this one. I think I made the right choice – it really works with the rest of the album. It’s a beautiful and bittersweet song, with some more great storytelling.
I love the idea of this song – a relationship where both partners are falling out of love, but they think the other one still loves them, until eventually one partner gives up and leaves, thinking they’ll be breaking the other’s heart… only for the other partner to be relieved the relationship is finally over. Good god, it’s like the definition of bittersweet. I love it. I’m a sucker for a good tragic love story.
Rating: 9.5/10.
Favourite lyrics: “I told you I’d be coming back again for you but I’m not / I’m going way out where the world will never find me / I made a claim that I would dance until we’re bones with my bride / I told you I would never leave you all alone, but I lied”
At Sea: Another shorter song. It’s pretty good, I like it. Gives me Lonesome Dreams vibes (as in the album, not necessarily the specific song). Indeed, you could easily read it as being from the POV of the narrator in Ghost of the Shore.
Rating: 7/10.
Favourite lyrics: N/A. It’s too short for me to pick any.
What Do It Mean: This sounds like a perfect mix of Lonesome Dreams, Strange Trails, and Vide Noir. It feels like a mix of all three albums, too, in terms of the themes. I am in love with it. It’s beautiful, and the lyrics resonate with me a lot. It might actually be my new favourite Lord Huron song ever – and that’s saying something, because it’s very hard for anything to overtake ‘Hurricane (Johnnie’s Theme)’, ‘Moonbeam’, or ‘The Balancer’s Eye’ for me.
Rating: 11/10.
Favourite lyrics: The entire first verse. “So much to say, but my words mean nothing / A life spent talking when my epitaph would do / Wasting my days with my mind on the future / And my past like a chain that won’t ever let me go / Where would I go, and would a lone soul miss me? / If I leave in the night, I’ll only be running / With the weight of the world at the tips of my fingers / A long lost soul in the wilderness alone”
Time’s Blur: LH’s longest song ever – and I’m pretty sure it’s their first wholly instrumental piece, too. Sonically, it reminds me a lot of the songs on Vide Noir. It’s a gorgeous piece of music. Gives me chills. The first few and last few minutes especially just feel downright otherworldly, and I mean that as a compliment.
Rating: 10/10.
Overall, I give Long Lost a 10/10. It’s a masterpiece, just like the rest of LH’s albums. Lord Huron are geniuses and I will die protecting their vision. (Kudos to you if you get what that’s a reference to, lol.)

6: best album of the year?
uhhh i definitely am not a person who knows things about music, but i spent a decent chunk of this year listening to vide noir by lord huron (not a new release this year but i listened to it A Lot) or i am easy to find by the national (this one actually was new this year)
22: has your fashion style changed this year?
a little bit? i definitely became more comfortable (out of necessity) wearing some things that i wouldn’t have earlier, and became more comfortable wearing others just purely based on changes in my lifestyle. that said i still think my fashion sense is largely the same, and has been since college. it’s just also (unfortunately) highly subject to how much spare income i have
25: what’s one thing you hope will continue next year?
i hope all my new friendships in this new city continue! i hope i can continue to hang out with all the great people i’ve met (some not for the first time, but still the first time in Meat Space), because they’ve made my first year here really great and i’m looking forward to an equally fantastic second one :^)

Hey can you recommend me some lord huron songs? I only know 2, meet me in the woods is my favorite
Honestly, just the entire Strange Trails album.
“The Yawning Grave” and “The Night We Met” are my favorites from the album, but honestly all of the songs are fantastic.
I also like “When the Night is Over” from Vide Noir and “She Lit a Fire” from Lonesome Dreams!
