guys, i'm currently working on the "reasons why shinran is one of the most brilliantly written romances of all time" masterlist and i came across this part of the manga:

chapter 44

shinichi is absolutely RUTHLESS in this chapter. correct me if i'm wrong, but this has to be his angriest moment throughout the entire series? i don't remember him acting this way in any other chapter 😂 like... shinichi is the type of guy who saves murderers from suicide, it's a well known fact that he values human life more than anything, HE'S A DEEPLY IDEALISTIC PERSON, YALL, THAT'S THE MAIN TRAIT THAT DEFINES HIM AS A PERSON and he straight up tells this dude (whos about to slit his own throat btw) TO GO AHEAD AND KILL HIMSELF

this is the most unhinged i've ever seen him 😂

now, let me be serious for a second. obviously, shinichi strongly suspected that the culprit wouldnt go through with it - he spent the entire case trying to cover up his murder after all, that's not something a suicidal person does. still though. the fact that shinichi was willing to risk it says so much about his love for ran. cause that's what his rant is about. the culprit tried to kill ran on multiple occasions and almost succeeded a couple of times. if there's one thing that shinichi can not handle, it's ran being in danger. he'll lose his composure every single time and he will lash out, even at innocent people who are just trying to help:

that's why im so shocked everytime the fandom implies that ran is an irrelevant character who doesnt contribute anything to the story. if (for whatever reason) ran stopped being in the picture, the story would end right then and there.

people seem to forget that shinichi has prioritized ran over cases on numerous occasions (that aspect of their relationship deserves its own post tbh, i'll hopefully get to it in the future), he completely loses his mind everytime there's even the slightest risk that she might get hurt and this case right here? chapter 44? that's the wildest shit shinichi has ever said 😂 the part about justice was spot on and very in character for him, but the rest? it was brutal... and very unlike him. which is shocking, considering that ran was completely unharmed. do me a favor and let that sink in: the end of chapter 44 was merely his reaction to the thought of losing ran - he completely lost his shit. now, if ran actually stopped being in his life? shinichi wouldn't just lose his temper, he'd lose himself.

for the record, this isnt me implying that he would go rogue or whatever. the reason why shinichi is so angry in chapter 44 is because ran is okay and tangible, so he still has something to lose. but if she was gone? if she stopped being his life? he wouldn't be angry, he'd be inconsolable. if the level of anger displayed in chapter 44 and 640 is what we get when shinichi simply worries about ran's safety, just imagine the level of heartbreak that we would witness if he genuinely lost her.

shinichi loves and needs ran so much, it's unfathomable for most people, including me. everytime i think i cracked the case and finally figured out how much shinichi loves ran, he proves me wrong. and while i think that most cold cases are a tragedy, i think im coming to terms with leaving this one unresolved. after all, love is the most mysterious force in the universe. and always will be.

I'm curious, how would be the relationship between Izuku and Katsuki if they had met when they were kids? Also, they would be more aware of their feelings or the would still be so dense and clueless as they are now?

It’s so interesting you ask because I think this possibility is baked into the story, just barely hinted at. Mitsuki and Inko are reflections—two women in the same situation, but choosing opposite paths. Whereas Inko left her rich, merchant family to go away with her commoner lover and live in a quiet outpost, Mitsuki and Masaru split and she ended up staying with the King (although we have no idea who made this decision yet, Mitsuki or Masaru). She could have easily ran away with Masaru, and ended up in the same village as Izuku and Inko.

I love playing around with this scenario because it is so heartbreakingly different 😭 For one, Katsuki would grow so differently: with two loving parents, no pressure, and would be able to explore fighting and the ideals of knighthood driven by his own ambitions. Izuku’s life would be even MORE different. For one, Katsuki is NOT stupid and would have figured how he has magic (Izuku would definitely use it on instinct to save Katsuki’s life or something: a Sludge Villain style of event). I also think Katsuki would help counteract Inko’s anxious parenting and help Izuku tackle the shame he has about magic, throughout his childhood, making him a stronger adult with better self-esteem.

I can imagine Katsuki trying to get SO good at fighting and honing his skills because “I refuse to let Deku surpass me with his powers!” but coming to terms in their teen years that it is because he wants to be able to protect Izuku. It’s very interesting because it’s almost the reverse of canon—Izuku has powers while Katsuki is powerless.

Enough blabbing! to answer your question: I think they would be best friends in every sense of the word—they would never be able to keep things from each other, unlike they do in the story now, and are partners in a full, complete way. I can see them dying to leave the village and still going on adventures but this time as underdogs rather than an extension of the crown. Romantically, I genuinely think the second they leave the bubble of their village Izuku would realise their relationship is Not Normal™ and make the first move (Katsuki was patiently waiting of course). And of course they had romantic tension all their life, built of mutual care and unconditional devotion!! Their journey in this reality would be more about their established relationship than being dumb idiots I think—an angst-free story!

It’s really sweet to think of, but it also gives the current story a real sense of tragedy </3

My name is Rory Littlearrow. If you want the full pedantic shebang, it would be 'Commander Littlearrow, Champion of Aurene, Head of Dragon's Watch'. I am devoted to Tyria and its protection. But I wouldn't mind a holiday from time to time.

What is your gender identity, orientation and relationship status?

I identify as male, bisexual and happily married.

Where and when were you born?

I was born in 88 Phoenix, 1289 AE in Rata Sum.

What is your weapon of choice and fighting style?

Longbow when I want to keep my distance or when I'm on a vantage point, sword & warhorn (sometimes greatsword) when I fight in closer quarters. I specialize in the use of various poisons that I coat my weapons in. There are also my black and white moas, who fight alongside me.

Lastly, are you happy?

There are... currently a lot of things in the world that would make anyone unhappy, but we're doing alright, I think. I'm happy with what we manage to accomplish each day.

What’s your family like? What is your relationship with them?

My family is my old team: my wife Audra, Ossun and his daughter Osnje, whom we like to call our niece.

My family is also all the new members that came along: Taimi, Gorrik, Jory, Kas, Rox, Braham, Canach, Caithe, Zojja, Logan and Rytlock.

Describing them would be very long and I don't want to talk for hours, but they all are the best people in the world, and I love them dearly. Despite the losses and the tragedies, despite the numerous hardships and the distance.

Ha! Wouldn't be here if I didn't run away.

Audra does. There are maybe two or three things Ossun doesn't know, but then again we traveled for almost eighteen years together.

Are you literate? Have you been to school?

Although I am Asura, I didn't do my studies in one of the three Colleges. I finished growing up in the Durmand Priory and learnt everything I needed to know there.

The eeriest prediction you made that later came true?

I wasn't the one who made it, and it's not exactly true, but one time Ossun was a bit drunk and joked that if Audra and I ever tried to have a child, it would look like a dragon. And now, I have a dragon daughter... even if she grew so beautifully that she looks and sounds timeless. I still held her when she was an egg!

What is something you were embarrassingly late to realize?

When I fist arrived to the Priory, there always was someone talking about master Stonehealer, how they had to show him this and that, how he gave a nice lecture... I thought this master Stonehealer had to be a respected scholar, but I never got to properly meet him until a couple of years. The only time I saw him before actually meeting him, he was sitting on a bench, unmoving, so I just walked past. I thought this was an actual lifeless statue, I had no idea this was Stonehealer.

In my defense, I was young.

Do you have mental health or physical issues?

Mental health issues, probably. I died.

No physical issues, at least for now, which is kind of a small miracle, given all that's happened to me.

What is your current main goal?

Peace and stability.

Food! I love a god drink, but I like to eat more.

A child from Skimmer Ranch in Elona gave me an Elon Lily. I keep it preserved in my pocket.
