Daniel was conflicted when Max won the championship; on the one hand, he was happy for his friend, on the other hand, he was probably wondering why he hadn't been that successful after so many years in red bull. That's why he wasn't very warm. //
Yes! Especially now that Max has been with Redbull as long as Daniel had been in 2018 when he was making the decision whether or not to stay and that (it's speculated) one of the reasons Daniel is speculated to have chosen to leave was because he was wary of taking the gamble with Honda and he's now just seen Redbull's gamble pay off...with another driver. I wouldn't be surprised if the only words going through his mind was "what if?" I really do feel for Daniel, it has to be especially difficult to see a driver, who was brought to him for him to look after essentially and show the ropes to (Daniel being the older experienced driver to a young and still learning Max), become world champion while it remains a dream for him. It has to be hard to look around the grid and realize that you're one of the last from your era of drivers left. Yes Checo & Valterri, who started at around the same time as him, are still there, as are the slighter older Seb, Lewis & Nando, but most of the old guard have been phased out to make room for the new. It's a young grid now anyway but it must feel infinitely younger for the likes of Daniel as they see those young drivers come to the forefront and realize that they're no longer one of them, no longer the new commodity on the grid. Experience will only get you so far and you slowly begin to realize that more and more of the teams would rather take the gamble with a new young upcoming driver who might give them 10+ years of racing and build a team/a car around them, rather than roll the dice with an experienced one who might not racing anymore in 5+ years. It's like the song 30/90 from tick tick boom, you're getting older and what can you do? The question of "when" you'll get a wdc is once again becoming an "if" you'll ever get one and that's got to sting. For the likes of Seb, Nando & Lewis, they at least they have the memories of their multiple wdcs but for the likes of Daniel who might never even get one... Seeing their younger friends achieve their dreams, must be a bittersweet and double edged sword. I hate to say it and I would love to be wrong but I think Daniel will join the list of extremely talented drivers who never got a wdc (whether due to bad luck or *bad decisions), who are now completely overshadowed by the dominance of other drivers from their era. And that just stings. He and so many others deserved better. In another time, another era outside of the Merc hybrid era, you just know he'd have at least one wdc to his name. I do think he is genuinely happy for Max but I also think he's also gutted for himself and he's probably trying to keep it in because he doesn't want to ruin Max's night with it. High-key just want to hug him because I do get it.
*Daniel baby boy you know I love you but you left Redbull because of the engine problems and went to Renault... Who literally constructed said engines that would literally just give up without warning in the middle of a race 😭😭
Anon this was PERFECTLY written my god and the Tick Tick Boom reference!!!!!🧡🧡🧡
Like I 100% agree, I do think there was things going through Daniel's mind about looking at Max and seeing the kid who Daniel basically took under his wing at the start of Max's Red Bull career seeing him breaking this records getting all these poles and winning the world championship at such a young age and against a driver like Lewis…I really do think Daniel while he was really really happy for Max ofc he was I do think he had a "that could have been me" moment.
I think Daniel was just unfortunate that he was in a team during a Merc dominated era...like he absolutely deserves one and I really hope he achieves one but I'm sure it is hard seeing these younger guys coming up and really racing for world championships as well. And he was just so so unlucky. He was definitely happy for Max...I don't think Daniel could be upset about Max winning it at all.
(The engine thing I KNOW!!!! I get Honda was a gamble but it was better than that Renault engine that was basically a bomb each race😂😂)
Send me your unpopular opinions🧡
