Sometimes books or series become so popular that we (or at least I) instinctively avoid them, perversely assuming that their popularity is a sign that they are a passing fad and nothing more. So as much as I loved Andrea Beaty and David Roberts's "Iggy Peck, Architect" (2007), I nearly didn't bother with their follow-up, "Rosie Revere, Engineer" (2013), and that would have been a HUGE mistake. 🚁🚁🚁 Beaty and Roberts are a phenomenal picture book team because they pay attention to detail without overburdening the work. So the story itself, about a bright, mechanically inclined little girl and her fantastic inventions, is wonderfully entertaining on the face of it. It touches on themes of self-consciousness and self-confidence without being the least bit didactic. And they sneak in subtle but relevant "Easter eggs" like Rosie's aesthetic nod to the famous wartime Rosie the Riveter, that help add value to subsequent readings and conversations.
