The internet is the driving force in today’s society and a huge part of our daily lives. Most children use the internet from the moment they wake up till the moment they fall asleep.
More importantly, most children (and many adults!) don’t know they need protection while surfing the web …. until it’s too late.

✍🏿What’s Your📖Story? (WYS?)
What’s Your Story?: Dwayne A. Jones: Dwayne the Contractor
“WYS?” is a guest post feature on BCBA’s Our Stories Matter blog. It’s for indie/self-published authors.
Read an👇🏿excerpt:
🔨The book series Dwayne the Contractor is based on my career as a developer, general contractor, and international missionary. As a general contractor, I’ve built many homes and commercial projects and traveled to Ghana and Togo, West Africa, India, and Haiti. My mission trip focused on ministering and spending time with children at orphanages… During my time at the orphanages, I was often asked by the children what I do for work in the United States. I often had to explain my work as a contractor on a level a 3-8-year-old child could understand, and that’s how my journey of writing children’s books started. I’ve completed and published two books of the twelve-book series. My goal is to expose children at an early age to construction or contracting as a career opportunity and allow them to see an African American male as a business owner with projects being completed at primarily minority homeowners.🔨continue reading Dwayne A. Jones’ story.

"'My calculations suggest that this wedge should hold!' said Lila, as she took a wedge and attached the plane to a castle window." After a series of technical mishaps (many of them my fault), I *finally* got my hands on our advance-ordered copy of "Princesses Can Fix It!" by Tracy Marchini and Julia Christians! @tracymarchini is a dear friend and I'm so delighted to see her latest book out in the world. Multicultural princesses using STEM skills to solve problems; what more could you ask for? My 4yo's first question after finishing this book was, "What's a pulley? Can we make a pulley?" ~ #princessescanfixit #tracymarchini #juliachristians #pagestreetkids #2021 #picturebook #kidlit #childrensfiction #picturebookillustration #picturebooks #picturebookstagram #childrensbook #kidlitart #picturebooksofinstagram #stembooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CSEwZCegp6G/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is how I feel when I can’t get my brain to understand really basic stuff after I spent the whole morning working with really abstract ideas.

I won't deny I’m in love with the whole “Ivy + Bean” chapter book series by Annie Barrows. While every book in the series deals with various topics, two of the books are science-centered: “Break the Fossil Record” (book 3) and “What’s the Big Idea?” (book 7).⁣ 👭Bean, is a restless, quirky second-grader who likes doing things in her own way. Ivy, a quiet bookworm with weird ideas, is a seeming opposite of Bean but she understands her best friend better than anybody else.⁣ 📕In “Break the Fossil Record”, Bean is bored to death until the teacher gives her an Amazing Book of World Records. Now Bean can’t think of anything but breaking a world record herself. She tries to stuff her mouth with over two hundred straws, wash dishes quicker than anyone, and even break a glass animal with her loudest scream. ⁣ 🐊 But nothing works until Ivy proposes to follow in the footsteps of Mary Anning, the famous paleontologist, and look for dinosaur fossils in Bean’s backyard. Fueled by the admiration for the great scientist, the two girls start their race to the title of the youngest paleontologists in the world.⁣ This great book with funny black & white illustrations by Sophie Blackall will be a delight for all kids, and especially those who love digging around in search for the unknown.⁣ The full review: http://jeannewald.com/book-review-ivy-and-bean-break-the-fossil-record/

Layla and the Bots series by Vicky Fang: In this easy-reading series, Layla and her three robot friends compose a problem-solving quartet, each with their own STEM specialties (envisioning, building, coding, researching, and leading all included) that they employ to discover solutions to dilemmas around them. In "Happy Paws," the group must protect an amusement park that is in danger of closing, and in "Built for Speed" they figure out how to create a go-kart with hand controls for a confident wheelchair-using racer. Every quest comes with a strong foundation in STEM problem-solving - characters research their project, talk to community members, try out designs, test, implement, and work out bugs - and with the fast pace and engaging characters, this process is fun! Even though this is an easy-reader book, Layla's character shows nuance, both strength and vulnerability - when Layla comes up with her plan to save the park, she confidently assures the owner "We've got this!" - but the next page has her nervously asking herself "Can we do this?" Collaboratively, they can, and the message of empowerment is clear. Written by an author who is an inventor herself, and became a writer to encourage early coding education for girls and minorities, these books are must-haves for any primary classroom. #girlsinstem #diversekidlit #diversechildrensliterature #easyreaders #earlychapterbooks #childrensbooks #diversechildrensbooks #robotbooks #girlpower #stembooks #stembooksforkids https://www.instagram.com/p/CM-vVnSBG_K/?igshid=1syprgs8b84dh

It occurred to me today that I really haven't shared any non-fiction outside of biographies, which is a shame because one of my favourite types of book as a kid was anything that was full of science trivia. Luckily, one of the most beautiful books sent to me to review as part of the Read With River Book Club's #FindMeStories_BestOf2019 project has been "Why Don't Cars Run on Apple Juice: Real Science Questions from Real Kids" (2019) by Kira Vermond. Full of fun, colourful illustrations by Suharu Ogawa, this fabulous picture book for kids about 5+ (and even younger, very curious ones) is divided into sections covering everything from outer space to some giggle-worthy bodily functions. The questions range from common/popular ones that most kids ask at some point, to some really silly but also interesting ones that might not occur to us. With enough text to be thorough but not overly daunting for early school-aged kids, it's a great book to have in your home library to interest kids in the workings of the world around them. Many thanks to Annick Press for providing a review copy for my honest consideration. I'm so glad to share this!! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #whydontcarsrunonapplejuice #realsciencequestionsfromrealkids #kiravermond #suharuogawa #scienceforkids #sciencetrivia #sciencebooksforkids #stem #stembooks #stemkids #stembooksforkids #stemforkids #sciencefacts #outerspace #thehumanbody #coolfacts #nonfictionforchildren #teacherinspiration #homeschoolcollective #homeschoolscience #learnathome #inquirybasedlearning #iteachsecond #iteachthird #schoollibrarian https://www.instagram.com/p/B4nuxgznbOX/?igshid=ukqg781cda6f
