Huh, weird, maybe the ISS just went by and made interference or something. I’m not a rocket scientist so I don’t know if that actually happens. But yeah, I know who she is. She has some cool headphones too! I wonder if there’s another headphones android out there. If so then you, À̶̢̛͙͓͚͆̃̓̊͛͐͊̐͘̕͜͝͝m̴̼̳̝̯̲͗͑̀̋̈́̌̃̅̾è̴̛͓̬͙̣͇̖̺̻̫̥̲̓̈́̋̇̎̇̊͂̅̈́̔̾l̴̜̠̯͔̙̙̲̯͕̥̓̓̄̾̆̏̅̋̂͋͗̚͝i̸̺̺͑͂̈͋̓͝a̸͖̖̜̮͓͈͈̹͓̓̽͌͝and the t̷̳͕̋͑̃͋̔̕h̴̬̖͆ͅi̴̺̘̘̽̑̾͛̍̚r̵̭̲̘̄͊̀̓̍̐d̴̻͂͐̌̀̈ ̴̡̃̈́̍g̷̰̿͊̅͛ų̶̅̊ÿ̴̧̮͇͈͊̋̈ could be headphones siblings.
Weird, it happened to me too. Maybe my universe’s ISS also flew overhead just now. Though it has just been raining down here and that always makes the internet go wonky for me.
Uh, what are you talking about? I don't know that person...

Man I know I said I wanted to get the third and final arc of Android!Charles done before the end of the year, but in all honesty, I've got another fanfic idea in the back of my mind that I wanna try out.
One that doesn't involve Charles being an android ;-;
It's more of a series of Special Brovert Ops centered fanfics, but IDK if Charles being an android would work in those circumstances.

How Maybe Happy Ending Became the Surprise Hit of the Broadway Season
Tumblr media
DO ANDROIDS DREAM? The leads of Broadway's Maybe Happy Ending: Darren Criss, in Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, and Helen J Shen in Michael Kors Collection. Swarovski ring. Hair, Edward Lampley; makeup, Kuma. Photographed by Norman Jean Roy. Fashion Editor: Edward Bowleg III. Vogue, March 2025.
---------- Bringing the androids to life, as it were, are stage veteran Darren Criss and Broadway newcomer Helen J Shen. Backstage in his dressing room before curtain, Criss, 37, is bursting with chattiness, hazel eyes flashing and ring-laden fingers aflutter. He credits much of Maybe Happy Ending’s success to its extensive Korean incubation, comparing it to a nearly decade-long out-of-town tryout. “The level of nuance we focused on from the beginning is stuff that you don’t typically get until months in the weeds,” he says. “The trial and error has been happening long before us,” says Shen, who’s 24 but could easily pass for far younger, sitting serenely in a Winnie-the-Pooh sweatshirt. A classically trained pianist who competed internationally before studying theater performance at the University of Michigan (where Criss is also an alum), Shen has had a busy 2024, starring off-Broadway in The Lonely Few and Teeth. Meanwhile Criss is best known for the five seasons he spent as the endearingly charming, openly gay Blaine Anderson on Fox’s Glee. For this performance as an android with creakier movements than Shen’s, he drew on something he’d never put to use professionally: his college semester spent studying commedia dell’arte in Italy. “Stereotypical modern acting is about what you don’t see, and what I’m doing here is what you do see,” Criss says. His robot had been programmed to display unsubtle emotions: happy face, sad face, surprised face. These expressions and Criss’s faintly wooden physicality, inspired by the harlequin figure, “immediately make people more willing to connect to the show’s nonrealness,” he says. In rehearsals, he kept top of mind a note from Arden: “Just because it doesn’t feel real doesn’t make it not true.”
Tumblr media
GROUP INTELLIGENCE Shen and Criss are joined in the cast by Dez Duron (center left) and Marcus Choi (center right). Costume design by Clint Ramos. Hair and wig design, Craig Franklin Miller; makeup, Suki Tsujimoto.
Underscoring that feeling of unreality is the shape-shifting set, involving a rotating turntable, proscenium LED tiles, and hologram-like projections. “The backstage mechanics are so unbelievably intricate,” Arden says. “My hope is that it’s working so well the audience doesn’t even notice.” The set was inspired by how we consume media on our phones; Arden estimates that the show spends more time in a vertical orientation than horizontal. Likewise, switching between sliding rooms on tracks emulates the effect of swiping on a personal device, and simple theatrical techniques like irising, created with black panels and neon, mimic how we pinch and zoom. Another influence was manga, which can tell big stories briskly, gracefully pushing readers from one image to another. The emphasis was on containing and focusing the audience’s point of view, Arden explains. “I wanted to take the audience on an adventure, leaving more to their imagination rather than trying to show everything.” Within those silently whizzing frames is a comforting, retro future-scape that the director compares to 2001: A Space Odyssey. “There’s this mix of cold futurism with warm sentimentality that’s also present in the score,” Arden says of the set. “You’re watching a classic Burt Bacharach musical, even though we’re driving a flying car.” The team has been floored by the rabid army of fans. Dubbed Fireflies, after a magical moment in the show, they range from repeat viewers dressing up as their favorite characters to those creating art inspired by HwaBoon, the emotional-support potted plant that many find the production’s low-key true star. (Arden calls her “a fabulous silent diva” who appeals to wallflowers in the audience.) A significant portion of those waiting by the stage door to meet the cast are Asian American, and while nearly all the actors in this production are also of Asian American descent, Shen shies from labeling the show narrowly. “It’s important to mark accomplishments, but whenever we put that pressure on to be a mouthpiece for any group of people that is multifaceted and contradictory and complicated, it’s going to fail.” Although actors of various races and ethnicities have previously portrayed the robots, almost every production has been set in Seoul. Yet Criss maintains “the show is as distinctly Korean as Romeo and Juliet is distinctly Italian...It’s where we set our scene, and some aspects of the show might spring from the culture.” (South Korea has the world’s highest density of robot workers.) “But it’s a story with universal themes: We all live, we all end, we all, hopefully, at some point, love or are loved.” The offbeat premise and ingenious staging prove that no algorithm can yet prescribe a hit Broadway musical. “As we enter into this world of AI, theater is one of the last completely human-made, -operated, -performed, and -received art forms,” Arden notes. “And that’s why we go to the theater—to learn something new about what it is to be alive.” How delightful that it’s possible in a musical about robots.

First of all, I wanted to say thank you for all that you do to continue this library. It’s brought such an amount of happiness to my life for the last several years so please know all your hard work is so so appreciated.
I read a fic waaaaaay back that was about Blaine being an AI robot that Burt bought for Kurt or Burt repaired these types of bots? Blaine ends up falling for Kurt even with him being a bot. If you at all know of this fic?
Thank you again and like before, appreciate you so much!!
Thank you so much for your message, glad we can help. Is the fic you require this one? ~Jen
Missing Pieces by sunshineoptimismandangels
Kurt still hadn’t found love after living three years in New York City. maybe he wasn’t meant for romance. But when he comes home for the summer, helping his father run his Android Repair Shop, he gets to know his dad’s latest acquisition, a handsome and sweet android with curly hair, and a kind smile. Maybe Kurt will discover that love isn’t what he always thought it was.

I’m using the season 2 waiting time to come to terms that Severance will never have an happy ending for everyone...
My ideal ending would be the reintegration of all the severed people, innie & outies finally being reunited in 1 person (and GOING TO THERAPY)
but I feel that would be kinda implausible as far as things are laid out right now...
So I’m starting my acceptance process now 🙏

Favorite Movie Fusions/Crossovers These fics are just as (if not more) compelling than the movies they fuse or cross over 😆🥰️ ✧ My fic recs are updated regularly on DW and quarterly on Tumblr. Link to the possibly updated reclist on DW here ✧ My entire catalogue of fic recs on tumblr here ✧ This post was last updated 1/21/2022 ✧ For epubs of rec’d fanfic from LJ or DW, click to this post.
✧Category: Gen✧ The Winchester Road by meus_venator. Rated R/Mature, Gen, 20k words. Summary:  The world has ended. Lucifer and his legions have moved on, their new battlefield heaven. He has left Earth a barren wasteland, he has also left behind the shattered shell that was once his vessel. This is a story of two brothers finding each other again at the end of the world and facing it’s passing together.A tale of abiding love.Initial concept based on the book and movie The Road. ao3.org/works/442149 my thoughts: So beautifully written, full of such powerful scenes of evil, graphic torture, and then the sweetness of the brothers together. Sam's mute and childlike in this fic, traumatized beyond belief, but still somehow capable of so much love and trust that keeps Dean going. Both voluntary and survival cuddles in this story. It's truly so desolate which puts their love in such sharp relief. Heart-wrenching in the best way. There's MCD but I'd still call it a happy ending. Loved this fic so much. This fic is rec’d in my desolate post-apocalypse reclist too.
✧Category: Sam/Dean✧ The Elko County Adventure by candle_beck. Rated Explicit, Dean/Sam, 35k words. Summary:  Mutant snake monsters, rooftop confessions, and a big-ass Howitzer strapped to the back of a pick-up truck. ao3.org/works/223796 my thoughts: crossover return Tremors (just the first movie)! such a fun story, honestly. Burt & Heather are hunters that Sam and Dean met when they were kids and there's a small problem of graboids that Sam notices while they're passing through the area. While the adventure unfolds there's a little emotional side plot of a moody Sam and incest angst that gets satisfyingly resolved. Great fic!
The Hunter Games by theproblematique, NC-17, Dean/Sam, 92k words. Summary: When the infamous Winchester bad luck strikes twice in quick succession Sam and Dean are forced to compete in the most brutal reality TV show ever created. It’s impossible to escape the battlefield, hiding can only be temporary, and alliances inside those dark, bloodstained woods last about as long as it takes for the other Hunter to figure out how to use your weapons. And then kill you with them. ao3.org/works/519567 my thoughts: it was awhile ago that I read this, but I remember I really appreciated how the author took the premise of Hunger Games (btw I really liked that book series even if its ending was very sad) and shaped it to build further trust and intimacy between Dean & Sam. Great mesh of building both action and love in this one.
Do Androids Dream? by cherie_morte. NC-17, Dean/Sam, 16k. Summary:  AU: Sam has been training to be a blade runner most of his life, ever since a group of rogue replicants killed his mother in an attempt to kidnap him as a baby. Now he's one of the top officers in the L.A. Police Department's Blade Running Unit, with a reputation for being ruthless when retiring rebellious androids. Problem is: Sam's never been as comfortable killing replicants as he pretends to be; growing up with Dean as his primary caretaker and a valued member of the family has left Sam with a weak spot for androids that he knows might get him killed one day. Knowing that doesn't stop Sam from loving Dean, or from wishing his replicant was as human as he acts. Now he's on the trail of Azazel, the yellow-eyed android responsible for ruining his life, but the closer he gets to retiring Azazel and putting an end to his days as a blade runner, the more he learns that there might be no turning back for him and Dean. (Loosely based on Blade Runner) ao3.org/works/8280277 my thoughts: I saw Blade Runner back in high school so it had been awhile, and even in high school I’m not sure I really followed it that well. But after reading Kellifer’s fic I was on an android binge and found this amazing fic by cherie_morte, an author I really appreciate for their imagination (which speaks for itself when you go through their fic summaries on AO3) and absolutely competent execution of their story premises. So this one didn’t disappoint at all, and I loved that it was Sam-centric, plotty, and featured both Sam and Dean caring so much for one another. I rec’d this fic in my Androids AU reclist too.
The Winning Scenario by brimstonegold and virtualpersonal (AO3). Rated R, Dean/Sam (unrelated AU), 216k words. Summary:  Disguised as a merchant during an information gathering mission on a gaming and pleasure station, Captain Dean hits the jackpot. Surprised to learn his winnings include a night with a pleasure slave, he is ready to reject the slave's services until he learns that the slave is human. There is no way he will leave one of his kind behind, no way. The pleasure slave, Sam, has his own secrets. Cylon torture and conditioning to make him a suitable commodity for the slave trade has left him with half memories, nightmares and psychological problems. If he knew Dean was a colonial warrior, there is no way he would leave with Dean and no way he would go anywhere near Dean's destination, the Battlestar Galactica. ao3.org/works/3296645 my thoughts: So this is a crossover with Battlestar Galactica but honestly you don’t need to know anything about that show to roll with the scifi in this story. It’s a fantastic opening premise and a great read! This fic can be found in my Winchesters... IN SPACE! reclist and also my slavery AUs reclist
The Time Traveler’s Brother by AmyPond45 (AO3). Rated R, Sam/Dean, 54k words. Summary: Dean’s life is turned upside down the night his mother dies. But that’s also the night a mysterious grown-up version of Dean’s brother first appears in his life. While Dean grows up, “Old Sam” is often there, especially when Dean’s father isn’t. As Dean learns what the future holds, he begins to question everything his father has taught him about who he is and what he is supposed to become. Can Dean find a way to save his little brother from his own future? ao3.org/works/3416087 my thoughts: Beautifully written. I’m not a huge fan of younger!Dean and older!Sam but this author keeps the affectionate lilbro and bigbro sibling dynamic despite the warping of time. A magical read that breaks your heart but still feels like a satisfying+happy ending. If you like this fic, you’ll probably like Break on Through to the Other Side (ao3.org/works/1457095) which has some similar elements to this one. This fic can be found in my time traveling reclist too.
Sew Me Up with Threads of Steel by hybridshade (shimyaku) & artwork by Amberdreams . Rated NC-17, Dean/Sam, 20k words. Summary: Sam left his previous life of guns and covert ops behind for a reason. But when the past comes knocking in a big way, he has no choice but to confront it and deal with the tattered remains of what he once turned his back on. That includes his brother, who's been in the hellish clutches of the enemy for too long and no longer remembers himself, let alone Sam. When Sam gets his hands on intel from said enemy, he puts his skills to good use - he's going to fix things if it kills him.(Very casually inspired by Captain America: The Winter Soldier) ao3.org/works/2542106 my thoughts: This was a fantastic story. I loved the way the author fused winter soldier elements to Supernatural universe and especially how they actually introduced, developed and then resolved such an intense loving relationship between Sam & Dean (unlike what Marvel did with Steve & Bucky tsk tsk). Sam comforting Dean were my favorite parts, so tender Ahhhh 🥰🥰🥰
✧Category: Jared/Jensen✧ Pandora’s Box by ratherastory. rated R, Jensen/Jared, 97k. Summary:  The Avatar fusion fic in which recently-paralyzed Marine Jensen Ackles goes to the distant moon of Pandora, meets the love of his life Jared, and discovers everything that's truly important to him. ao3.org/works/222196 my thoughts: I barely remember the plot of this movie I saw once in 2008 when it came out, so reading this was absolutely tremendous, especially because it was just mildly familiar, with really just the incredible visuals from the film my most distinct memories, all padding the fantastic writing and nuanced romance that Avatar truly failed to convey. I think there was an empowering alteration in the plot where it turned out to be Jared (or the girl Navi in the movie) who is encouraged to embrace prophecy and his role that the film didn't have and I ADORED the way it went down in this story. It wasn't predictable, and the sign Jared interpreted was a sign to find a love who believed in him. The world-building was shocking, bc I'd already seen the movie and I hadn't been completely sold on the world of Pandora but holy shit, I am now. The narrative structure can be just so much more effective in describing soul-deep peace and unity versus visual storytelling. Ratherastory was an artist, or perhaps a translator to a reader like me, sharing exactly how magical this universe was in a way I could better understand (she made it so I could see!) This fic is also featured in my Winchesters... IN SPACE! reclist.
This Long Silence by dugindeep (hotsauce) (AO3). Rated R, Jensen/Jared, 54k. Summary: Jensen serves as the young sheriff of Morgan Falls, a town in the middle of nowhere that never has much happen. Until the residents start to turn, becoming violent and attacking one another. While trying to manage the chaos, Jensen is concerned with tracking down his neighbor, Jared, who’s been hauled out of town with others in the quarantine. As Jensen becomes more desperate, those around him are clueless to his obsession, and he begins to recall how he and Jared became so close. Their sleepy town will never be the same, nor will Jensen and Jared. ao3.org/works/2464127 my thoughts: The Crazies was a good fun b-horror with zombie-like people, so I was immediately into this premise. The story delivers: charming relationship-building between Jensen & Jared and then a fun read when the action picks up! You can find this fic in my Zombie AU reclist too.

Webtoon’s New Project Will Include DC Superheroes & K-Pop Artists Like BTS
https://ift.tt/3xWK3hZ
South Korea is one of the few countries in the world where Google doesn’t dominate. Instead, Naver remains the primary search engine used by Korean netizens. Like Google (or, more accurately, Alphabet), the Naver Corporation isn’t simply a search engine, but is a conglomerate with many companies under its umbrella. This includes Webtoon, the most successful comics publisher in the world.
Webtoon is a mobile-driven platform for web-based comics that is free to download on iOS and Android, and it has only been growing since its launch in 2014. It utilizes a vertical structure that allows readers to scroll down in a continuous single page, and it is a very pleasing way to read comic stories. It’s also extremely mobile-friendly, which is good news for companies looking to expand into mobile-first international markets and to attract younger readers.
Earlier today, Naver announced (via Variety) that Webtoon has reached an agreement with DC Entertainment that will see DC Comics characters appearing in several upcoming webcomic series via Webtoon. At tonight’s Naver Meetup press event, the company gave further into into what they’re calling their “Super Casting” project, announcing that the storytelling initiative will also include artists from HYBE, the parent company for BTS’ Big Hit Entertainment. Let’s discuss what this might mean…
HYBE Webtoons
Web comics is a growing market, and Webtoon is looking to bring their platform to a more global audience. Webtoon CEO Kim Jun-koo used popular Netflix series Sweet Home and Kingdom, both of which are based on Korean web comics, as specific examples of just how influential the format is becoming on the international stage. The “Super Casting” project, which includes both DC Comics and HYBE, is on example of Webtoon’s ambition when it comes to growing their global footprint. While HYBE is a South Korean company, their reach is global—not only through BTS, currently one of the biggest groups in the world—but also through its expansion in both Japan and America. In April, HYBE officially merged with Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings, which includes artists like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Demi Levato.

So what might Webtoon’s HYBE-affiliated comics might cover? Well, there’s the BTS of it all, of course. Though Webtoon did not mention BTS specifically in their announcement, the K-pop band is HYBE’s most popular artist and BTS has demonstrated a willingness to appear in web comic form in the past. In addition to 2014’s We On: Be the Shield, which saw the members as superheroes fighting monsters, Naver Webtoon actually released a webtoon set in the BTS Universe in 2019. Save Me was a collaboration between Big Hit and Webtoon subsidiary LICO, and saw the character based on Jin stuck in a time loop from which he can’t escape until he saves his six best friends. The webtoon consisted of 16 volumes, and amassed more than 50 million views by its ending.
Of course, HYBE isn’t just BTS, and the company is looking to diversify its profit portfolio across artists. Other popular artists that fall under the HYBE umbrella include Seventeen, GFriend, Zico, and Enhyphen.
DC Comics Webtoons
As for the agreement with DC, Webtoon announced the intention for the comics to operate as standalones that “will appeal to all fans, without the need to know or read any previous stories.” During the Naver Meetup, CEO Kim Jun-koo emphasized the original elements of the DC-Webtoon collaborations, noting that the projects will be completely different from what has come before.
That’s not to say we won’t be seeing any familiar DC Superheros. In an official statement, DC Comics SVP and GM Daniel Cherry III said of the deal: “DC is excited to introduce our iconic characters to a new generation of fans worldwide,” adding that DC has been “working closely with the Webtoon writers and artists to adapt our characters and stories to Webtoon’s mobile format. Our shared goal is to create fun and compelling DC stories that all readers will enjoy.”
The partnership announcement comes several months following reports from the Korean media (via Koreaboo) that Warner Bros. Entertainment (like DC Comics, a subsidiary of WarnerMedia), may be investing almost $450 million into HYBE. The reports led to speculation that HBO Max could become a platform for the distribution of BTS content, such as concerts or documentaries. The “Super Casting” announcement certainly suggests there might be something to these reports.
Presumably, Webtoon’s “Super Casting” project will include other global power players moving forward. When asked if Naver Webtoon had spoken with Marvel Comics about the possibility of teaming up for future webcomics, Webtoon CEO Kim Jun-koo said the company is in the “process of discussion with other ‘super’ players,’ but they have no other partnerships to announce at this time.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

Also any other fics like that one you know of I wouldn’t mind reading as well! Thank you!!

Out of This World
I forgot the third thing I wanted to bring up in the Potpourri post, but it finally came back to me, so I want to talk about it here: the forgettable late 80′s sitcom “Out of This World”.
There were a lot of dumbass sitcoms in the 80′s.    It still seems surreal to me that society seems to have moved past this, but in the 1980s there seemed to be absolutely no reason not to do a comedy about a family or group of co-workers dealing with some high-concept absurdity.    “ALF” is the one everyone remembers, which I guess is a testament to the ALF character, but there were plenty of other, goofier ideas floating around out there.   For example, “Small Wonder” was about a family where the dad built an android child and they just sort of rolled with it, I guess.    I think part of the trouble was that the sitcom formula had already gotten stale by the mid-80′s, to the point where your pitch almost had to have a gimmick to get a second look.
And, you know, Mr. Ed was from the early 60′s, so it’s not like high concept was anything new, but I’m pretty sure there weren’t fifty other “talking animal” sitcoms running through the same decade.   In the 80′s, it was like the TV industry considered “My Favorite Martian” a genre in and of itself, and the trick was to find some new twist on it.
For “Out of This World”, the hook was that the dad, Troy, is an alien, but he’s never actually around because he got drafted to fight some war in outer space.  The show is actually about his half-human daughter, Evie, who develops some of her father’s super powers once she turns 13.  I only remember seeing a handful of episodes, but mostly it was about the girl getting into wacky sitcom hijinks, usually causing a problem with her powers and then using her powers to fix it.   In every episode she’d talk to her dad on the space radio and everyone would learn an important lesson about, I don’t know, let’s say friendship.    .
youtube
I’m watching the pilot as I write this, because I want to make sure I get this right, and man is it awful.    Evie’s uncle is in this, and he knows the secret, but his main purpose on this show is to be the butt of every fat joke the writers had on file.   Evie’s mom is anxious about Evie developing powers, and the uncle is worried that she’ll accidentally transform herself into a lizard.   Instead, she accidentally stops time for everyone else, which forces mom to tell the truth.    This is downright painful to watch, because Evie’s the only kid in 1987 who doesn’t seem to know or care about space aliens, because that’s the only way to drag out the reveal.    Once it finally sinks in, she gets upset and shouts “Then that means I’m... half-creature!”
Oh my gosh, they actually make an ALF reference in this show!   Evie’s mom has to convince Evie that dad looked like a regular-ass person, or else they wouldn’t have married and conceived her.   “Look, kiddo, do you really think I’d bump uglies with just any alien?   Your dad was a snack.” This is really awkward and dumb.  I gotta give credit to the other actors in this, because they spend most of this episode frozen in place while they work out this timestop thing.
The problem in the pilot is that Evie can stop time and unfreeze people by touching them, but she can’t touch all of her party guests one by one without exposing her secret, so they don’t know what to do.    Her Uncle Beano (ugh) suggests using the Vulcan hand gesture, which... I’ll get to that in a second.   Her mom finally remembers that dad left a special present for Evie for her 13th birthday, and it contains this glowy crystal that functions as the space radio I mentioned earlier.   Troy is voice-acted by Burt Renyolds, which is extremely goofy once you know that, and he doesn’t actually tell them what to do.   Then Evie just gets a sudden urge to do the exact thing that fixes it, and I guess the moral is that all of this power stuff will come naturally?
The real appeal to all of this, at least for me, is this idea that Evie can finally connect to a father she’s never known, and bond with him over something they have in common.     Anything that makes her seem strange or alone can be written up to her being half-Anterean, and her dad can instantly relate.   It seems kind of cruel that they made her wait 13 years to use the space radio, but there’s some sort of genetic link thing that makes it work, and I get the impression that the technology requires her to reach that age before it’ll work properly.    The whole thing feels really contrived, but there’s this really touching concept at its core, if you’re willing to wade through sitcom cliches and insipid one-liners to find it.
What always bugged me about this show, though, was that I only liked it for the alien lore and the drama that went with it.    I wanted to know more about Troy and the war he was fighting, and this Antarean culture that he only ever hinted at.   I liked the idea of the Evie character, caught between two worlds and not entirely comfortable in either.   But the show was never serious about exploring any of that, and the alien stuff was always window dressing for weak comedy “laffs”.   Or it was used as a metaphor for puberty, which always irritates me when shows do that.    I also hate the micro-aggressions that keep coming up in this show.   Some character will make a pop culture reference to aliens and that just bugs me.    Look, Beano, Mr. Spock is a fictional character, what your niece is going through is really happening so at least try not to be a dick about it.
The episode that I remember the most is the one where Evie decides to break the “no-telling” rule and reveals her secret heritage to her friend, who immediately blabs it to everyone, and before you know it, the government tries to capture her for dissection.    At one point, Troy even says that he might have to come back to Earth just to intervene, but then Evie’s mom betrays them... and it turns out it was all a dream.   Another dumb one, but I liked the idea of more people knowing the truth about Evie.  It made the premise feel more real.
The thing that never made any sense to me was that Evie seemed to have immense powers over time and matter, and the implication was that Troy and everyone else on his world had even greater powers, so what was going on up in space that could threaten the Antereans for over thirteen years?   I doubt that ever came up much, since it would probably be a downer.  Everyone treated Troy’s off-world duties as an inconvenience, but if his side lost the war than Earth would probably be doomed somehow, right?   Really, the whole concept feels more like some sort of Greek mythology, with Troy as a benevolent god who impregnates a mortal.    There’s a running theme that Evie has to use her powers wisely in order to earn new ones, like the whole show is some sort of trial she has to pass.   Apparently the show ended on a cliffhanger, but I’d like to believe that the true ending would involve Evie saving the day and earning the mark of an Antarean adult: a Burt Renyolds mustache.

Podcasts for 2020
In this internet age, there is a seemingly endless amount of media to consume. And it’s right at our fingertips. This is incredible, but it’s not always a good thing. I thus try to be conscientious about what I spend my time on and what media I consume. For instance, I choose to not use social media as I see it as a time suck with minimal benefit. (Yes, I know that this blog is technically on a social media platform). And don’t get me wrong, I love technology and want to become a computer engineer. It’s just that I would like to spend my time doing things that are more meaningful to me such as reading or playing the guitar. If you’re interested in evaluating your relationship with technology, consider reading Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport.
Within the past year, podcasts have become one of my favorite forms of media. I like being able to consume media without actively being on a screen. I actually discovered most of these podcasts from their respective YouTube channels. I use the Google Podcasts app which is available for Android phones. As 2019 comes to a close, I thought I would share the podcasts that I regularly listen to. I find these podcasts to be enjoyable to listen to while adding value to my life beyond the enjoyment factor.
The Daily: This is a news podcast from the New York Times. New episodes are released by 6:00 a.m. on weekdays and are about 20-40 minutes. As I don’t read the news as much as I should, this podcast educates me about some of the biggest news stories. Of all the podcasts on this list, this is the one I listen to primarily out of necessity rather than entertainment. That being said, it is really well done and I look forward to it each morning. I listen to this podcast while getting ready for the day.
SciShow Tangents: This is a science podcast that is formatted like a game show and is thus very entertaining. Topics range from cryptography to timekeeping. Each episode kicks off with an original science poem. This is followed by a game called truth or fail (similar to two truths and a lie, but there is only one truth), a fact-off, an answer to a listener question, and a butt fact. New 30 minute episodes come out every Tuesday.
The Numberphile Podcast: This is a math podcast. Each episode, host Brady Haran interviews a mathematician. Brady asks each mathematician about their research and their path to mathematics. The topics are varied and there is no predictable upload schedule. The episode lengths vary as well, but many are over an hour. I discovered my current book, Infinite Powers: How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe by Steven Strogatz, from an episode with the author. So far, the book is very interesting.
The College Info Geek Podcast: This podcast is broadly about productivity and self-improvement. The original focus was on becoming a more effective student. Unfortunately, this podcast will be ending sometime in 2020. The co-hosts are engaging and talk about useful and interesting topics. New episodes are released every other Monday at 8 a.m. The episodes are usually around an hour. While listening to this podcast is not part of my routine, I have found that I have listened to all of the recent episodes
How I Built This with Guy Raz: This podcast is from NPR. In each episode, the host interviews inventors/entrepreneurs about the companies (and movements) that they built. The companies range from Dell Computers to Burt’s Bees. At the end of each episode, an up and coming entrepreneur is featured. Unlike the other podcasts on this list, I don’t listen to every episode.
