Wait, Bravern's theme song is diegetic. So in-universe, who performed that song? I don't think Bravern's singing because he's in the background calling out attacks. Then again, I guess he could've modified his voice because he's a robot. Does he have a recording studio in addition to the weird 3D printer? This is gonna keep me up at night.

Mmm so i tried to play some of that Wuthering/*/*/Waves game that came out today
Bc its a Genshin-like and hey its sort of the time of the Genshin update where not much is going on. Why not try it out?
Especially as my pathway into Genshin was "haha, lets see how bad this Chinese BOTW-like is" to "... oh no i'm actually having a LOT of fun"
And... boy i dont think i've ever played a game thats so shamelessly a rip-off of another one, and fails to carve even one iota of its own identity.....
Look, i'll admit. My play time is probably less than 3 hours. Mostly just trying to follow the main story. Until i unlocked the gacha, and tried to run around and see what the open world had to offer for a bit.
And its.... its Genshin. Its Genshin with a slightly more sci-fi skin, made by a company that isn't quite to the same standard of quality.
The combat is different, and i WILL give it the fact that its got good punch. Long term, I can see this being more interesting than Genshin's (Which i admit is a little button spammy and not very strategic anymore - especially as i ignore Spiral Abyss)
..... But its about the only system that i felt had the right level of polish? Jumping felt wrong, climbing felt wrong. I tried to do the fast climbing up a wall and the main character just went into the sprint animation. The subtitles dont scroll down when youre not in a proper "cutscene", and it doesnt seem to be scrollable, so you miss entire sentences. I dont know if you can change the dub language, since I just want to play my games in English, but if you did change your language... thats.... not great? Theres also weird pacing issues with the voice acting, where it seems like they didn't quite give the English voice lines enough time to be said, pause for breathing, and move onto the next line. It feels unnatural. Plus - some of the translation is a little odd? You get a dialogue option like "What happens when someone Overclocks" and the response from the character is "Overclocking is *thing*". Like... the option was "what happens when you do this thing?", not "what is thing (You just explained 2 seconds ago)?"
UI wise, it all felt overly familiar. Everything is in exactly. the. same. place. The pause menu is a little different, but not a huge amount. Many character systems are the same.
Overworld, the bit i explored seemed a little... empty? There wasnt really a lot i could see to do. I found a mechanic that is basically seeles..... I found a domain that had the same kind of UI going on. I found a puzzle that isnt directly ripped from Genshin.... because its the magnesis/ Ultrahand Korok block puzzles from BOTW/ TOTK....
Theres nothing i played that felt unique to this game? Maybe the echo system, which I probably havent played with enough, but i dont think that alone is enough of a draw on its own? It feels like it needs something more significant to really set it apart and let it be its Own Game.
But truly the worst sin - they gave the main character the title of "Rover". Which sure feels like "Traveller", but not. Except.... they dont put an article before "Rover". And the translators really really should have. Because Rover.... is a stereotypical dog name. "The Rover" would sound a looooooot better.
The thing is tho, i bet none of this would bother you if you never played Genshin? A game which, honestly, I do not recommend you picking up if you havent played it yet. Because youre looking at 100+ hours of cutscene just to catch up. This... might actually be a good option if you want to try that kind of game, but are daunted by the amount of content in Genshin? It needs a bit more polish but I dont think its bad. Just obviously a little lower budget, or the team isnt quite as experienced. But i cant play this game and not go ".... this isnt as good as the game that its clearly trying so hard to be???" And maybe if Genshin was a typical story-based game that just released in one go, and i'd finished it, i'd be more forgiving? Like an "oh boy, two cakes!" kind of situation? But side by side... and I can't help but compare and find this new game lacking.

Favorite song you're embarrassed to like?
Embarrassed to like?
That really isn't the term I'd use, but like...around coworkers I certainly don't play my anime playlist in the car LOL

BRAVERN EPISODE 7 SPOILERS/THEORY
The show's been going in weird directions since I made this post. I was totally open to the idea that I'm just paying attention to the most random shit so whatever. I somehow had further thoughts about this anyway. Oh no.
So while some of y'all were over-analyzing the origin of Lewis's sweet mech, I was trying to figure out why they included a scene of Bravern working on a model kit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it turns out that it's a really big model kit. I'm pretty sure that there's a connection to be made here.
ETA: I don't think these parts are necessarily too small because this jerk could very well be building an entire mech like this, meaning that these could be internal parts. Or he could literally be working on a model of a mech he wants someone else to make. I dunno. He's clearly up so something here and I have no idea what.
[--Discussion of stuff that happens afterwards that don't want to put into its own post just yet. I'm being as vague as possible --]
ETA 2: Seriously, part of what got me about this whole thing was that I didn't really get the fixation on Smith's mech. (My weird thing with this model-building scene was equally silly, so that's OK) It admittedly doesn't make any sense that was introduced and that happened, so I was overthinking it. Perhaps Bravern's essentially engaging in self-sabotage here? (That is to say, sabotaging his former self)

watched the first slam dunk the other day and I cannot get that sequence of the starting five walking up out of my head.
also just for my own memory: that sequence near the end where it was quiet for a few minutes? there was a child in my theater who kept asking their dad what happened to the volume and I did my best to not bust out laughing when the questions didn't stop 😂 precious

Crystal Springs Chapter 12: now on ao3!
Go ahead and give it a read right over HERE!
Chapter 12: Here I Come
Jack reunites with the rest of his family.
I know what you're thinking.
Tumblr media
You'll just have to read the chapter to find out! ;)
Jk jk jk, I'm not THAT awful. Here, have an excerpt:
"Are you coming, or not?" she shouted over her shoulder. Now or never, Jack, he thought to himself. He took yet another deep breath in, exhaled, and followed her up the path. The pair of them hadn't even made it to the base of the veranda when someone rounded the corner of the house, carrying a large pile of firewood and whistling to himself. If a non-magibean were to look at the man, they'd guess him to be somewhere near sixty, perhaps, though it was hard to place. He wore a pale light orange shirt, the sleeves rolled up despite the chilly weather. His skin was somewhere between medium and olive, slight wrinkles on his forehead. His hair was a literal fiery orange, flames shooting straight up, his eyes a warm almost golden orange—not too light and not too bright. "Dad!" Jacqueline yelled, waving. The man looked startled, the flames on his head growing taller for the briefest of seconds before his eyes landed on Jacqueline, widening in recognition. His face broke into a smile, the wrinkles disappearing and every possible smile line you could imagine appearing instead. "Jacqueline! You're home!" he shouted from the base of the porch stairs. Jacqueline bolted, ramming right into him and giving him a hug. The firewood toppled, and Blaise nearly did, too! He must've been used to these kinds of tackle hugs, Jack thought as he neared the stairs, since he steadied himself fairly fast and squeezed back in record time, going so far as to lift Jacqueline with a little half spin. She laughed, face buried in his chest. "We've missed you around here, kiddo," he said, putting her down and squeezing her tightly. "I missed you guys too," she said, quietly. Letting go, she grinned up at her dad. Their dad. "I brought someone with me," she said, pointing over her shoulder. Blaise looked past her, meeting Jack's unsure gaze. His eyes widened, hair going out with a little puff. The two men locked eyes; Jack swallowed, taking off his shades and immediately averting his gaze. Jacqueline glanced between the two of them, choosing her next move carefully. She stepped back, and Jack felt waves of comfort come across their connection. He glanced at her. She smiled, and gave a tiny, tiny nod. It took Jack a moment still to work up the courage, before he finally looked up into Blaise's eyes. "Hi Dad," Jack finally said, a little too quietly for his liking. He cleared his throat. "I'm…back." Blaise was silent, eyes roving over his son fast, face unreadable. Jack braced himself, fearing the worst. Waiting for the angry retort. The proper banishment from the grounds that would surely come his way and—warm. He was warm, suddenly. Very warm. Jack opened his eyes (unsure when he had even closed them) and found himself looking over Blaise's shoulder. He was hugging him. Blaise was hugging him, tightly. Jack stood still, confused. His arms were sticking out, unsure if he should return the hug or not. There was a small fwoosh, a sudden warmth blooming near his head. Blaise let go, his hair reignited and a smile on his face as he gazed at Jack. "Welcome home, son."
That's one of my FAVOURITE scenes. Just as confused as Jack? Guess you'll have to read on to find out what happens next with both Mr. Frosts HERE.
Wanna start Crystal Springs from the top? FRET NOT! You can read it HERE on ao3, and HERE on ff dot net :). Summary below the cut!
It's been almost a year since Jack Frost thawed and things are looking...well, not so great. Jack's powers are seemingly gone. Without them, the Dome that keeps the North Pole safe from the cold and its magic controlled is melting, putting everything and everyone magical at risk. Unable to hide his power shortage any longer, Jack is forced to admit the truth. Thankfully, there is a solution: enacting the Legate Law, bringing Jack and the sister that he hurt so many centuries ago back together again. But when Jacqueline starts experiencing destructive blackouts, the pair are forced to head back home to Crystal Springs, bringing Jack face to face with the rest of the family. Needless to say, between getting his powers back, helping his sister figure out what in the FROST those blackouts even were, reconciling with his parents, meeting the two even younger siblings he didn't even KNOW he had, NOT TO MENTION the ancient threat that's had it out for the ENTIRE Frost family finally making a move? Saving Christmas (regrettably) is looking to be a little bit...complicated.
