#anne’s trick or treat 2023
Note
Trick or treat! With Blue! (And a cutely dressed pumpkin Randy ^-^)
Randy is almost one! He's started babbling a lot. When Blue opens the door, you manage to get him to say, "Twick tweat!" Then he squeals, "Dadadadadadadda!"
Blue practically melts into a puddle on the steps. He drops the bucket of candy in favor of scooping up his son and cuddling him. At some point he pulls you into a hug too and gives you a big kiss.
"Happy Halloween!" he declares.

2023 Writing Self Evaluation ✨
Thank you to @disgruntledkittenface for tagging me! 💕
1. List of works published this year:
I’m just going to link the masterpost I made a few days ago because I published 26 works this year and I don’t feel like listing them all again here lol
2. Work you are most proud of (and why):
Inner Crisis, for sure. I had written fics with ace characters before, but this one just took it to the next level for me in terms of how personal and vulnerable it is, and I’m very proud of the way it turned out, and of myself for putting it out there. 🥰
3. Work you are least proud of (and why):
I’m going to take the easy way out here and say none. I can honestly say I’m proud of every single fic I have put out into the world this year. <3
4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:
I always find this question hard, but the one that comes to mind first is this bit from You’re Family:
“Anyone want tea?” Anne asks.
Louis lets the others answer first as he allows his eyes to scan the room around him.
A tall tree is tucked away in one corner of the room, decorated beautifully with a mixture of whites, reds and golds, along with a few handmade decorations sprinkled throughout, most likely some of Gemma’s and Harry’s creations from back when they were kids.
Underneath it, a dozen or so meticulously wrapped gifts await the moment they’ll be unwrapped.
To his left, an imposing fireplace anchors the room, the fire lit within bathing the room in warmth along with a soft amber glow.
Five traditional red and white stockings are hung along the mantle, and Louis smiles as he reads the names embroidered on each of them, fondly thinking of a time his Mum used to do this for him and his multiple siblings too.
Anne. Gemma. Michal. Harry. Louis.
Wait.
Louis?
That’s him.
“Louis?” Anne asks, and Louis whips his head around to look at her in disbelief. “How do you take your tea, darling?”
“You got me a stocking?” Louis asks instead of answering her question.
Anne smiles softly at him. “Of course, you’re family.”
Louis tries really hard not to tear up. He mostly succeeds, save for maybe a tear or two he fails to conceal.
Beside him, Harry squeezes his knee and pulls him closer.
“So, your tea?” Anne asks again with a knowing smile.
“Oh, hm,” Louis clears his throat. “Just a splash of milk, please.”
“You got it, darling,” she says before disappearing in the direction of the kitchen.
Louis finds his gaze going back to the stockings again, still shocked to find his name on the last one.
“See,” Harry whispers in his ear. “I told you they’d love you.”
5. Share or describe a favorite review you received:
I don’t think I can pick only one, but I have to say the response to Inner Crisis as a whole. The number of comments and messages I’ve received from people telling me they relate to Louis’ story has just blown my mind and each one of them has made me cry
6. A time when writing was really, really hard:
I’ve found it quite difficult to find time to write this whole year, to be honest. 2023 turned out to be pretty busy for me personally, and it’s resulted in many periods of not writing at all, and then I always find it hard to get back into it.
7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:
All of I See You. This is the second year in a row that I wrote horror for the 1D Trick or Treat fest, and I am still baffled that I, someone who usually writes mostly fluff, am somehow able to do that lol.
8. How did you grow as a writer this year:
Most of what I wrote has been very self indulgent. I had so little time to write that when I did, I just wrote what I wanted to write, rather than what I thought other people would enjoy, which is quite freeing actually.
9. How do you hope to grow next year:
I’d like to step out of my comfort zone a little and attempt working on a longer fic.
10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
Anyone that has left a comment on any of my fics this year. Here are a few people in particular whose support has really made a difference over the past year ❤️: @disgruntledkittenface @bigxrig @parmahamlarrie
11. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:
A lot of Inner Crisis is inspired by my own experiences with asexuality.
Oh and A Special Bond literally has links to pictures I took while travelling for visuals!
12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:
I’m pretty sure this is what I say every year, so not new wisdom, but, just write what YOU want to write. Have fun with it, and the rest will work itself out!
13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:
I haven’t written in over a month at this point, so I don’t have any active WIPs that I’m bringing into 2024, but there are definitely a lot of ideas I’m excited to get to explore next year, including a fake relationship fic idea I meant to write this year but ran out of time to.
14. Tag three writers whose answers you’d like to read. ;)

Fishy's books read in 2023
Since I like talking so much, I thought I might as well talk about the books I read this year.
I'll go through each of the books I finished reading this year and what I thought of them. All of the books I've listed below were read in their English versions.
John Ajvide Lindqvist - Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) (2004)
I'd found out about this book because I'd heard about the movie that was based on this book. This book was about a little boy who befriended a girl, who was revealed to be a vampire. The book was creepy because it leaned towards the more gruesome and violent parts of being a vampire. There was also another character who I felt very creeped out by (if you've read the book, you probably know who I'm talking about). While I think the book was interesting in how it approached the relationship between the boy and girl, I didn't find any of the characters particularly interesting. That being said, I think this book might be of interest to people who want to read a vampire/crime novel with a darker take but be warned of the dark themes.
Elena Ferrante - The Neapolitan Novels (2012-2015)
This was a book about the lifelong friendship between two women in Naples. I will admit that several parts of this novel had my blood boiling. I sometimes hesitated to call the two women friends, but instead two women whose lives were intertwined. Why this novel made me so angry was that there were characters who treated others so poorly and yet our characters still gravitated towards them. As the outsider I was like "No!! Don't believe their lies!" but of course that had no effect. Despite the anger and the precarious nature of many of the relationships in this book, I felt that the author portrayed very unique relationships. I struggle even to describe what kind of relationships the characters in this book have because they are so unique. Just calling characters 'friends' or 'lovers' hardly captures the kinds of feelings that they have for each other. I struggle to say I liked the book because of the parts that made me angry but it definitely was good and rich.
An Oresteia (Translated by Anne Carson) (2009)
This was a collection of Ancient Greek plays surrounding the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra, and the subsequent murder of Clytemnestra by her children Elektra and Orestes. I hadn't read any Greek plays prior to this and I found this work very interesting. It was not very long, there wasn't a lot of dialogue, but I could feel that within the space between the words, held the thoughts and feelings of the characters. That makes sense because these are plays, which would have acting to accompany the dialogue. While reading this work, I did some research on the Trojan War to try to understand the experience of the intended audience (an audience who was likely quite familiar with the Trojan War). This was an interesting read for my first Greek play.
Edmondo De Amicis - Heart (Cuore) (1886)
This was a children's novel, written from the point of view of a young boy over the course of a year of school before moving away. Since it was a children's book, I found that it was wholesome. I kept expecting some situations that were too good to be true to turn out to be a trick or trap, but those instances never happened. Instead, it was a journey of a boy learning to be kind, learning the meaning of friendship and such. Read this if you want something happy.
Edogawa Ranpo - Strange Tales of Mystery & Imagination (2000)
This was a compilation of some of Edogawa Ranpo's short stories. Edogawa Ranpo was a pioneer of Japanese literature, particularly in the genres of mystery. I'd classify the stories in this compilation as either being akin to detective mystery, or more peculiar tales bordering into horror. I have read some more contemporary Japanese mystery and thriller novels (translated into English). I could definitely recognize the influences that Edogawa Ranpo had on those modern writers, in the way the stories were paced, in the way the writers would look to the dark side of human minds, and in the ways that information was revealed. I was actually really impressed by the variety in this compilation. The short stories varied in content, in form, in style. I would highly recommend this short story series to fans of mysteries and thrillers and especially if you enjoy Japanese crime novels.
W. Somerset Maugham - The Painted Veil (1925)
Of Maugham's novels, I'd only read Of Human Bondage and I didn't like it too much. On the other hand, I found the Painted Veil a great deal more compelling. This book followed a woman who had married a biologist who was stationed in Hong Kong. Her husband found out about her infidelity and after a sequence of events, they travelled to a town that was hit with a cholera outbreak. I think this was an interesting novel about a woman finding her place in life, though it took a lot of loss to get there. I liked it and would recommend it for people who want a serious but short book.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón - The Shadow of the Wind (La sombra del viento) (2001)
For years, I had seen exceedingly positive reviews for this book, and as a result, I think this book was overhyped for me. This book was about a young man who tried to uncover the mystery behind an author of a book he owned. The mystery itself was decent as our main character uncovered the truth of the past which was resolved in the present. Why I didn't love this novel was because I felt that it was tropey. I understand why people would love this movie, because it has so many moving parts that are all connected. However, I didn't feel any close connections with any of the characters as they all felt like character archetypes. I think I would have enjoyed this if I had read it when I was younger, but I think I have outgrown this kind of writing now.
Keigo Higashino - A Midsummer's Equation (2011)
I've read a few of Keigo Higashino's novels and I have no intention of stopping. This was the third book that was translated to English in the Detective Galileo series focusing on Professor Yukawa. What's interesting about Detective Galileo mysteries is that Professor Yukawa is never the main character of these novels, and yet he is the main character of the series. In this novel, Professor Yukawa was attending a panel discussion in Hari Cove, where a death occurred. While the police conducted their investigation, Professor Yukawa would conduct his own parallel investigation, often more casually.
What set this book apart from the previous two translated novels in the Detective Galileo series was the human aspect. While the previous two novels did contain human dilemmas, I felt that it was more prominent in this novel. I don't want to get into spoiler territory but I felt that this book forced me to confront the facts that the characters were humans who were affected by crime, rather than just hand-waving the human aspect and focusing on the gimmick of the crime. This novel also emphasized that while Professor Yukawa was a very competent investigator, he was not an officer of the law, which I thought was an interesting stance to take. I definitely recommend the Detective Galileo series for people who like crime novels. All of the novels in this series are compact but very cool.
Closing Remarks
I'm actually surprised by the number of books I read this year. I just assumed that other than the Neopolitan Novels (the longest book I read this year), I hadn't read very much. But I fit quite a few short books in this year.
Unfortunately because I am a slow reader, it takes me a long time to get around to reading different kinds of books. But I am always on the lookout for interesting books and I do have a to-read book list. It's just that it might be 10 years before I finally get to a certain book lol.
Anyway, did you read any of the books on this list? What did you think? Also let me know what books y'all read this year :)

🎃🍬Trick or Treat 🍬🎃
Open all month for all characters. Send “Trick or treat” and a character name to get a friendly greeting in return (and maybe a treat).
No guarantees on speed, but I’d feel bad not doing something.

I'm on mobile and can't find the masterpost, but do you perhaps do Gaster? If so, could I get a trick or treat?
Hey! For future reference, if you need it, the RULES are here. Technically I do write for Gaster, but the man was scattered across time and space, so he's not exactly around in the world where all the skeletons live in a house together. However, Halloween is a time when the veil between worlds grows thin, so perhaps, if you come under just the right conditions...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The farmhouse looked abandoned. There were boards over the windows and huge cobwebs hanging between the pillars of the porch. The only sign of life around the place were the jack-o-lanterns. Someone must have carved them and put candles in them, even if the candles flickered in the chilly autumn wind.
The steps creaked as you climbed up to the front door. There was a skull door knocker, but you didn't feel right using it. Instead, you pushed the doorbell. It gave a slow, melancholy "bing bong" that echoed through the empty night.
You stood on the porch for an uncomfortably long time. Finally, just as you were preparing to leave, the front door creaked open. You found yourself looking into a dark, empty hall. You could see a shadowy staircase and what looked like an umbrella stand. And a shape, like a piece of the darkness had been cut out like fabric. The shape turned slowly, slowly, and a slightly echoey voice said, "What do you say?"
"Trick or treat?" you managed, even as your heart began beating faster and faster.
The figure finally faced you. The face of it was all you could see. It was an oval skull with two long scars, one running from the top of the skull to one eye socket, the other from the opposite socket down to the jaw. The creature's mouth curved in what might have been a smile. It reached a skeleton hand into an invisible pocket and pulled out a black blob, which it held out to you. "All I've got..." it said, its voice sounding far away. "Sorry..."
"Um...that's okay," you said, taking the object. It felt papery and crinkled softly in your hand.
"Happy Halloween..." the figure said, and the door blew shut.
You stood on the porch and tried to study the "treat" you'd been given. There was just enough light from the full moon overhead for you to see its outline. It was a ball of paper, stained with odd black smudges. You managed to make out "S...P......love you....sorry..."
A car horn blared suddenly and you jumped and nearly fell down the porch steps. The paper slipped from your fingers as you reached out to catch yourself on the railing. A big van pulled into the driveway, its headlights illuminating the house. The boarded windows and cobwebs were decorations, you saw now, the kind of cheap things you could buy at the dollar store.
A plump woman and quite a few skeletons tumbled out of the van, all talking at once. The woman spotted you and beamed. "Hi!" she called, and you realized it was Anne. "Sorry we're late! We got caught up at the party at school. Everybody wanted to see Randy. Were you okay waiting here for us?"
"Yeah," you breathed, trying to regulate your heartbeat. "I was fine." You looked back at the door. "Did you guys leave somebody home tonight?"
"No. Why?" Anne climbed the porch steps and peered through one of the boarded windows. Then she looked at you. "Are you okay, sweetie? You look like you saw a ghost."
You shrugged. "I just thought I saw somebody moving around inside," you said, "and maybe that I heard something when I rang the bell."
"I almost guarantee it was either one of the cats or one of the dogs," Anne said. "Sorry if they scared you."
"Nah," you said, as the memory of your strange encounter faded, "I wasn't scared. Just confused. I could have sworn it was a new skeleton."
"Oh stars, I hope not!" Anne laughed. "Twenty really is too many already. Come on. We brought treats back from the party, and you deserve something sweet for having to wait here for us." She looped an arm through yours and let you into the house, turning on the lights as she walked in.
The paper you'd been given blew down the porch steps like a dried leaf. It danced for a moment around Papyrus's feet, until he picked it up and tucked it into his pocket. "Can't have litter lying around," he said to himself. "We have guests to impress!"
