Y’all I want to throw massive kudos out to the Roger Williams Park Zoo for a choice they made today: rather than joining in on a GenAI trend all the zoos are doing right now, they chose to support and spotlight an artist on their staff!

The big thing right now is these GenAI “figurine toys” of zookeepers or zoo management. And instead they shared a version drawn by one of their staff!

Go give them some love, if you’re on FB. Too many zoos are really getting into GenAI and just whitewashing the climate change / copyright issues that come with it, so I want this zoo to get as much positive feedback as we can muster for making a better choice.

When I was a kid I had a dream about a 7 ft. tall karate chopping Barbie doll. Lately I've been having dream about a random man sleeping at the end of my bed like a cat.

I talked about sacoglossan sea slugs before (specifically the sea sheep) and how they can photosynthesis via stealing chloroplasts from the algae they eat, but there's another cool thing two particular species of this superorder can do! The species Elysia Marginata & Elysia Atroviridis can completely remove their own heads, survive as a head, and regrow their bodies. This is called "extreme autotomy" and it's not entirely certain why they do this. The process takes hours so it's not for escaping predators and only some do it to rid themselves of parasites

Like, they completely decapitate themselves, living without several of their organs for nearly a month. They completely regrow their bodies after about 20 days. It's assumed their ability to use photosynthesis helps them survive during this time
