Fics & Poetry

I’m a professional writer. However, I’d never written fanfic before 2022. But I had a Sandman idea that wouldn’t leave me alone, and I clobbered it all together during NaNo ‘22 and published on a weekly schedule in 2023. It was a slow start (people on Tumblr are apparently a bit weird about OCs), but it’s really picked up since. I’m grateful for the little community I built around The Light of Stars, and writing its sequel “The Pillars of Creation” also kept me busy in 2024. It still has me in a tight grip right now (if all goes well, I’ll finally start publishing in January/February, yay!). But my writing in 2024 mostly belonged to canon characters, and these fics/poems were what you liked most:

[Another annoying side note 🤣: The work of fic-writers gets shared so much less than that of artists and meta-writers. Even less if you don’t write reader fics, smut or for one of the big ships. I had this conversation with many other writers, and it’s the same for most of us, to the degree that people will ask us for the next chapter and tell us how much they like our fics, but never, ever share them. So maybe that’s something we can all improve on in 2025: If we like something, we’ll share it?]

Meta-Analysis

The Sandman is one of the few stories that hasn’t left me alone since my teenage years, despite having books and bookshelves clogging up literally every available space of my house. I find something new in this work all the time, and I just love taking the fine tooth comb to it.

And the next one is tricky for me, because in 2024, three of my metas took off a bit for certain reasons:

1. The Endless are not their Opposite—they only define it

And at the time, the creator reading and acknowledging my thoughts meant something, simply because the story always meant so much to me—I’m not particularly susceptible to parasocial relationships or putting people on pedestals. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t feel a sense of anger and disgust on…

The Tumblr Sandman fandom has been limping for some time now because it’s mostly a show fandom. After such a long time with hardly any news, many people simply move on and get their shipping needs met somewhere else. As someone who is mostly interested in the source material/comics and literary/meta-analysis, it never worked like that for me because neither characters nor stories are replaceable for me. But NG turning out to be a piece of shit was definitely the death knell for an already dying fandom—I could actually show you stats to make a point, but I won’t because I want to keep the demarcation lines clean here: None of this should ever be mostly about fans being disappointed or “losing their comfort show”, or whatever. We didn’t lose anything. Those women did. And I personally think every new fan should know about what he did so it doesn’t happen again. Plus, the structures that enable the abuse of power and, more importantly, keep people like this in power, will never be brought down if we pretend they don’t exist. But whether someone can separate the art from the artist is entirely up to them, and no one owes anyone an explanation. Emotional processing is hard, not every personal thought needs to be aired publicly, and our actions matter far more than our words. That’s all I’m going to say about it—my first post on the matter still stands.

Community: The Sandman Book Club

The news awkwardly coincided with having just founded the meanwhile biggest Sandman community on here. And despite everything: I love what my co-admin @tickldpnk8 and I have put together to reconnect people with the source material. We’re always happy if new people join and participate (it’s a community, not a blog 😉).

Fandom Thoughts

There was a lot of stuff in between (we got a S2 sneak peak!)—the same old fandom discourse is one of them. But if I have one goal for 2025, it’s that I want to maintain creating the space I’d like to see.

So in that vein, I’ll be honest and tell you what I lament most: It’s the transition of fandom into a consumer space. As someone who is more of a creator and sharer, I want to keep doing my bit because I love doing it. But I’d lie if I didn’t admit that my well felt fairly empty at times, and that my energy is a bit drained at this point. Investing energy into a limping fandom while others openly stated they would “only come back when S2 starts because there’ll be more engagement” felt strange, and I freely admit it annoyed me at times. It’s just a way of thinking I don’t get—are we primarily fans, or are we primarily chasing clout?

And speaking of engagement:

I often see beautiful art and wonderful poetry that has under 10, or even 0, notes. And it breaks my heart a little that so many people don’t share/reblog anymore. Because every time I reblog someone’s underappreciated art, I see the notes of those posts go up because my blog is connected enough to kick off a chain of engagement, even if it’s not always earth-shattering. You can do that, too. But it won’t happen if you only like. Reblogging is not for social clout—I personally believe that’s a fundamental misunderstanding when it comes to fandom. I see it more as saying Thank You for a gift someone gave us, and to make sure that more people also receive that gift.

Because artists/writers give their gift to fandom. Making others happy and connecting over it is the whole point!

And I’d love to see fandom turning into more of a gifting culture again. These pockets exist, so I’m not saying it’s not a thing anymore. But I also see a growing culture in which people only consume and at best engage in a TikTok/Insta-type manner by giving a like that holds no real thought. I get not everyone is a creator. But if you’re not, your gift could be to share and engage more thoughtfully. It doesn’t have to be with everything—it already makes a difference if it’s only the stuff you’d like to see more of. That’s my fandom wish for 2025…

A silly and short Dutch Van der Linde x shifter reader fic thing

Okay so this is basically just a first interaction with Dutch van Der Linde I would have once i manage to shift to RDR2, but i decided to post it here in case any shifters need motivation/inspiration for their first day I hope you enjoy it x please don't criticize my writing, english isn't my first language and this is my first time genuenly posting something on tumblr

I wake up and I am met with Dutch staring down at me, I am pretty dizzy and distorted, I prop myself up on my elbows but before i can regain my consciousness fully i get questioned by him “Who are you?” I mumble my real name “Tjaša”, the name is foreign to him and he catches only a bit “Ash?” I stare at Dutch in slight disbelief that he managed to butcher my name this bad, but I am too disoriented to correct him or just to bother correcting him “yeah, that”, he then offers me a hand so i can pull myself up from the laying position, I take it, while he pulls me up he says “the name’s Dutch Van der Linde” as I stand up, I regain back my consciousness fully and try to make it look like I made a mental note in my mind of his name despite knowing it beforehand.

As I take in my surroundings I realise where I actually am, the realisation hits me like a truck, but I remain calm, i feel my body with my hands and swat off any dirt on me, as I look down I see my old black zip up hoodie, red t-shirt and my gray sweatpants accompanied by my red socks and Sketchers. After taking in my surroundings and grounding myself Dutch speaks up again.

“What happened to you? Arthur says that he found you knocked out on the side of the road” oh. that. I remember my stupid story that I am meant to sell them and begin explaining “I- I dont remember, sir” its polite to use proper official terms is it not? “Where am I?” i contrast the politeness before, by interrupting him as he was about to say something “Horseshoe Overlook, a minute on horseback away from Valentine” this is my first time here, no way I would know where it is despite the fact that I visited this location in my favorite videogame many many times “I’m sorry, where?” Dutch now picks up on my foreign accent, he at first brushed it off as dizziness from being knocked out, but now realises that it is a part of who I am “America, young lady” I give him an unamused look “I figured that part out, sir… what year is it?” let him figure it out on his own, I think to myself, if he hasnt picked the fact up by looking at my clothes, surely he will get it now, right? “1899” he says pridefully, clearly missing my hints, so i just serve it to him on a plate “fuck… this cant be right” he finally gives me the awaited puzzle look “What do you mean by that?” okay, here we go, now is the time to sell him the absolutely insane story “I am not supposed to be here… sir, I- I am from the year 2024” okay I sent it fully, now lets see the reaction “Lady, I am afraid you hit your head a bit too harshly” oh boy, now the convincing begins “Sir, look at my clothes, do they not look foreign?” he checks me out for the first time ever, not that he wont be doing much of that later on “Foreign yes, but from another time no, impossible” okay hes not easy to convince, lets pull the plastic trick… I remove one of my shoes and point on the end of a shoelace “this is plastic… it hasn’t even been invented yet” he carefully inspects this curious material I called plastic… “I don’t recognize it, but I still don’t believe you” shit okay, now we gotta pull out the tags on my clothes “see here? it says that it was produced in the year 2023, which isnt my year cause I had this hoodie for a year, but still its from the future” okay this better be it… he gives me a puzzled look not being able to come up with a reasonable explanation for it, he does a double take and looks at me in disbelief “And how are you here then?” he bought it, yes, lets proceed “No idea, but I want to go home, sir” he briefly tries to find a way for me to time travel back, but is met with no success, he sighs as if this is going to be the toughest news of my life “Miss, I am afraid I have no idea” of course you don’t, I am a shifter dumbass, but oh well at least you feel sorry for me.

The couple had travelled to the island of Himeshima to observe the Autumn migration of the famous chestnut tiger butterflies. The journey had been Maki’s idea after hearing about a butterfly themed song Nico would be performing at her next Live. And while she had presented it as an opportunity to take some pictures for Nico to use as promotional material, both women knew it was ultimately about getting away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital and idol production company for a few days and spend some time together.

With excited guidance from Nico, Maki stumbled into the bathroom to wash her face.

Once Maki gave a sign that she was ready, Nico began to pose. She had chosen an outfit with a color scheme based on the mostly black and white of the butterflies she intended to mimic. With obligatory pink accents of course.

“Wait.” Maki suddenly said. “Hold just like that.” She snapped several shots. “Perfect. You have a butterfly on your head, Nico-chan.”

“Eh?”

“It looks cute. Oh, here comes another.”

Sure enough, another pair of wings alighted on Nico’s shoulders.

“Seems they really are unafraid of humans.” Maki commented before continuing to take pictures.

“Maybe they’re attracted to Nico’s sweetness.” Nico suggested as yet another butterfly landed on her.

“Don’t…”

“Nico is the Sweetest Idol in the Universe, after all.”

Maki sighed. “Idiot…”

“You love it.”

“Maybe…”

Nico laughed and the small photoshoot continued.

Author's Note Continued: First off, yes, I am well aware that Aqours already has a butterfly themed song. And I will admit that was my first thought. However, I've already written YohaRiko for this event, and even managed to write one of my escort ships, ShizuKasu before writing anything for my eternal flagship NicoMaki.

Fanmerch: おじゅ (Ohju/ouka)

Early in December 2023, one of my favorite artists posted that she was going to be selling a 2024 daily calendar for the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy VI.

I was so excited for this that I immediately went through the processes of setting up a shipping account for purchasing items from Japan to be shipped to the US.

The calendar arrived last week and I'm ecstatic. For lots of reasons. I don't even know where to start.

First, let me say that this artist - whose handle is Ohju (おじゅ), and whose store name is Ouka (追歌) - is an absolutely delightful and generous person. It's because of her help that I was able to learn how to set up the process of shipping to the US. She's fielded some of my weird (but hopefully respectful) questions, and has overall just been extremely kind and patient when she didn't need to be. A very sincere and appreciative どうもありがとうございます to her. ❤️

Okay, the next amazing thing is that she sent me more than just the calendar. In fact, the package I received included the following items that I was not expecting:

3 postcards (one of which is a GORGEOUS illustration of Hydaelyn from FFXIV)

3 sheets of stickers

1 sheet of stamps

4 sheets of stationary

A mini zine she made named Relic Hearts that features illustrations of various FF6 accessories (this is akin to her amazing art depicting FF6 weapons for SWORDTEMBER 2020)

A handwritten envelope with a handwritten note inside it. HANDWRITTEN, people! That's a touch of love right there!

To reiterate, these are all things that were sent in addition to the calendar, which I haven't even talked about yet. I was truly blown away and became giddy like a child, like they were a bunch of surprise birthday gifts. THANK YOU for all these extras, Ohju-san! 🤩

So - the calendar itself. The first part is a 36-page booklet that contains empty spaces labeled with a month and day. The second part is a small, prism-shaped desk display containing seven sets of peelable stickers. The stickers are similarly labeled with a month and day, and the idea is that each day you peel off the current day's sticker and put it in the matching space in the booklet.

Her illustration on this depicts the process much more clearly than my bumbling text.

The dates in the empty spaces in the booklet are sometimes sequential, but sometimes not, so you can't always predict how the stickers are going to line up.

Each page in the calendar also contains some reflections and thoughts from Ohju-san herself about FF6, detailing some of her own history with the game as well as some of her own headcanons.

The calendar doesn't "start" until April 1st, 2024, so for now I'm just holding onto everything. I'm honestly a little scared to even use it; everything is so beautiful that part of me wants to just preserve it in its packaging forever. But that's not what Ohju-san intended, so come April 1st, I'll peel my first sticker to put into the booklet, and will then have another 364 days to look forward to.

Finally, a few other artists also contributed pieces to the calendar. I haven't seen any of their pieces yet, but six pages of the calendar are dedicated for their stickers, so I know which dates will be theirs.

I'm intentionally limiting the pictures I post in order to respect Ohju-san and the other artists' work. But here are a few pictures of the calendar materials.

There's even a guide sheet for where everything goes, just in case you get lost (which I absolutely will).

Anyway, this is one of the most amazing collections of fan merchandise I've ever seen. I'm extremely grateful to Ohju-san, and I can't wait to start using this calendar.
