before dragons rising the closest jay got to looking like his mother, especially outfit wise was in season two (2) and season five (5) and only got further and further away from looking like her. until he became a villain.

EDDIE ‘’CLEANHEAD’’ VINSON, BEAUCOUP PLUS QU’UNE ‘’TETE BRULÉE...’’

Né le 18 décembre 1917 à Houston, au Texas, Edward L. Vinson Jr. est issu d’une famille de musiciens. Vinson, qui avait appris à jouer du saxophone alto durant son enfance, avait amorcé sa carrière comme chanteur de R & B en se produisant avec le groupe de tournée de Chester Boone durant les vacances scolaires. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme en 1935, Vinson s’était joint au groupe à plein temps.

À la fin des années 1930, Vinson était devenu membre du groupe de Milton Larkin. Durant son séjour de cinq ans avec le groupe de Larkin, Vinson avait eu l’occasion de jouer avec de grands noms du jazz et du blues comme T-Bone Walker, Arnett Cobb, Tom Archia, Cedric Haywood, Wild Bill Davis et Illinois Jacquet, qui faisaient également partie de la formation à l’époque.

Dans le cadre de ses tournées avec le groupe de Larkin, Vinson avait fait la connaissance du légendaire Big Bill Broonzy, qui lui avait appris à chanter du blues et l’avait engagé pour participer à une de ses tournées en 1941. À la même époque, Vinson avait aussi rencontré le  pianiste Jay McShann. À l’époque, Charlie Parker faisait partie du groupe de McShann. Vinson l’avait même ‘’kidnappé’’ pendant quelques jours afin de pouvoir mieux étudier sa technique. À la même époque, Vinson avait également fait une tournée avec Lil Green.

Vinson avait été surnommé ‘’Cleanhead’’ après que la soude contenue dans un vaporisateur capilaire ait endommagé sa chevelure, ce qui l’avait obligé à se raser la tête complètement. Enthousiasmé par sa nouvelle apparence, Vinson avait continué de se raser la tête jusqu’à la fin de sa carrière. Le critique Robert Christgau avait par la suite ironisé en qualifiant Vinson de "one of the cleanest—and nastiest—blues voices you'll ever hear." Vinson lui-même ne s’était d’ailleurs pas privé pour plaisanter au sujet de l’incident, qu’il avait immortalisé dans sa chanson ''Cleanhead Blues.''

Après s’être joint au groupe du trompettiste Cootie Williams à la fin de 1941, Vinson avait obtenu un grand succès avec la pièce ''Cherry Red.'' En avril 1942, Vinson avait fait ses débuts sur disque en enregistrant la chanson "When My Baby Left Me’’ avec l’orchestre de Williams. Vinson avait quitté Willams à la fin de 1945 pour former son propre groupe, un ensemble de seize musiciens. Durant cette période, même si sa spécialité était toujours de chanter du blues dans le plus pur style du Texas, Vinson avait aussi enregistré avec un petit groupe de bebop, . Parmi les plus grands succès de Vinson à cette époque, on remarquait "Juice Head Baby", "Kidney Stew Blues" (qui était devenu sa chanson-thème), "Old Maid Boogie", "Some Women Do", ''Somebody's Got To Go'',  "Oil Man Blues" et "Ever-Ready Blues", même si certaines de ses chansons étaient souvent trop osées pour jouer à la radio.

À la même époque, Vinson avait également joué avec les Ink Spots. Vinson avait probablement connu un des sommets de sa carrière en 1952-53 lorsqu’il avait dirigé un sextet qui comprenait de futurs grands noms du jazz comme John Coltrane.

Après être retourné à Houston en 1954 pour enseigner la musique, Vinson avait été redécouvert par le chef d’orchestre Johnny Otis qui l’avait incité à enregistrer et à se produire de nouveau dans les clubs. Parmi les albums que Vinson avait enregistrés au cours de cette période, on remarquait ''Kidney Stew is Fine,'' ''Cleanhead's Back in Town'' et ''You Can't Make Love Alone.'' 

Au début des années 1960, Vinson avait collaboré avec le saxophoniste alto Cannonball Adderley, ce qui avait contribué à le faire connaître d’un plus large public. À la fin de la même décennie, après avoir de nouveau collaboré avec Jay McShann, Vinson s’était installé à Los Angeles et avait commencé à travailler avec la revue de Johnny Otis. Avec Otis, Vinson avait d’ailleurs fait une apparition au Festival de Jazz de Monterey (1970). Durant les années 1970, Vinson avait également enregistré avec des sommités du jazz et du blues comme Count Basie, Johnny Otis, le groupe Roomful of Blues, Arnett Cobb et Buddy Tate. Vinson avait aussi continué de composer, enregistrant notamment "Tune Up" et "Four", deux pièces qui avaient été faussement attribuées à Miles Davis.

Durant les années 1970 et 1980, Vinson avait enregistré plusieurs albums qui avaient été salués par le public et la critique. Extrêmement populaire auprès des amateurs de jazz et de blues, Vinson s’était produit sur une base régulière lors de nombreux festivals de jazz européens et américains. Il avait aussi fait des apparitions avec l’orchestre de Count Basie.

Atteint d’un cancer de l’oesophage, Eddie ‘’Cleanhead’’ Vinson est mort au California Medical Center de Los Angeles le 2 juillet 1988 à la suite d’une crise cardiaque survenue pendant qu’il suivait des traitements de chimiothérapie. Il était âgé de soixante-dix ans. Au moment de sa mort, Vinson était considéré comme un des meilleurs saxophonistes du bebop. Ont survécu à Vinson son épouse Bernice, trois filles, cinq petits-enfants et un arrière-petit-enfant.

Une de ses dernières performances de Vinson était commanditée par la Southern California Blues Society. Une des membres de l’organisme, Betty Miller, avait commenté: ''As frail as he was at that last show when I talked to him backstage, when he got up to the stage his voice was very strong and his playing was wonderful. That showmanship always came through.''
